ULTIMATE SAFARI HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sea kayaking is a unique and intimate way to immerse yourself in this beautiful World Heritage area. Explore a different section of pristine Ningaloo coastline every day in your double sea kayak. Vehicle support means we paddle a different section of stunning coastline daily, never covering the same ground twice. Spot turtles, rays and schools of fish from your kayak; sometimes we see dolphins and dugong. Crystal clear turquoise waters are a trademark of the lagoons at Ningaloo; yes it really is that colour!
  • Snorkel different, amazing sites each day. With over 500 species of fish and 300 species of coral at Ningaloo, there's always something different to see. As well as the traditional 'shore-based' sites such as Turquoise Bay, Oyster Stacks and Lakeside, discover other sites you won't find on any map. We also take the opportunity to snorkel from the kayaks where possible. The snorkelling is world-class: you will be amazed at the diversity and abundance of marine life at Ningaloo!
  • Return each afternoon by vehicle to our comfortable base camp, located within Cape Range National Park. Your spacious tent is already set up for you when you arrive, and camp is equipped with picnic tables and shade shelter, fridge, solar showers and toilet. The beach is only 300m away via a sandy trail: perfect for a sunset drink or perhaps a sunrise yoga session.
  • Join us for some guided bush walks and marvel at the ancient landscape and stunning views of Mandu Mandu Gorge and Yardie Creek Gorge. The Yardie Creek Gorge trail is a spectacular 2km return walk along the edge of the only permanent water source in Cape Range. We usually enjoy this walk in the late afternoon to spot the rock wallabies as they emerge from the cliffs to feed and take in a west coast sunset. Mandu Mandu is a dry gorge that also supports a population of black-flanked rock wallabies. The 3km loop walk offers up some fantastic views of the reef and range.

SEA KAYAKING AND SNORKELLING

The sea kayaking takes place inside the fringing reef, where the lagoon is rarely more than 3m deep - perfect for spotting wildlife and snorkelling. After your guide gives you the all-important paddling instruction and safety talk, we launch the kayaks and travel along the coast at a relaxed pace, stopping on secluded beaches for morning tea and lunch as we go. We plan to travel with the prevailing breeze, and usually cover between 5 and 12 kms per day - depending on what other activities we enjoy for the day. A different section of coastline is covered each day, offering new sights, more pristine beaches, and unique snorkelling experiences.

Every day provides fantastic snorkelling opportunities. At some sites we land the kayaks on the beach and swim a short distance from shore, at other sites we anchor or moor the kayaks and slip over the side. We have discovered some excellent ‘un-named’ snorkel spots that are accessible only by kayak.

In the afternoon we lock up the kayaks on the beach, and return by vehicle to our base camp, which means you only have to carry what you need for the day in the kayak with you. At our comfortable base camp, you can take a solar shower, raid our comprehensive library of reference books to identify all the amazing critters you've seen that day, grab some snacks and a drink and settle in for a west coast sunset, or just relax and reflect on the beauty of your surroundings.

5 DAY ULTIMATE SAFARI BASE CAMP

These 5.5 day/5 night tours are perfect for the person wanting to have an active holiday whilst still escaping to a relaxing place. Each night we camp out in spacious, stand-up tents under the stars, yet have the convenience of our vehicle and camper trailer at base camp - so camping and cooking is comfortable and easy. Our base camp is equipped with picnic tables and camp chairs, gas cookers, fridge, shade and wind shelter, toilet and solar showers: all the gear we need for comfortable camping. Your tent is set up prior to arrival, with a high density foam mattress, sheets, pillow and doona. At the end of each day of kayaking and snorkelling, we drive back to our base camp, enjoy a fresh water wash, and over a few drinks and nibbles, enjoy the sunset. Tents are twin share; if you would like your own solo 'private' tent, a $100 single supplement applies.

Base Camp is also close to some great bushwalking locations. We usually do the Yardie Creek walk and Mandu Mandu Gorge walk, as well as taking a visit to the National Park Visitor Centre at Milyering. This tour is the complete package for those wishing to explore Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park!

ULTIMATE SAFARI FAQs

I'd like to bring the whole family. Is this tour suitable for kids?

Minimum age for our multi-day tours is 12 years old. We have had younger children join our 5 day tour in the past, it really depends on the activity level of the child, and also the parent - as the parent, you will be doing the majority of the work in the double kayak if you are paddling with a child under 12. Please contact us if you wish to discuss.

I'm not a strong swimmer, and have never snorkelled before. Am I able to join this tour?

All levels of swimming ability are welcome. All of our guests wear PFDs (lifejackets) whilst kayaking and are welcome to wear them whilst snorkelling if needed. Our guides will run through the basics of snorkelling and are great teachers! However in order to fully enjoy this tour, and not impede the enjoyment of other guests, we recommend having at least a basic level of swimming and snorkelling competency.

How many people will be on this tour?

We need a minimum of 4 people to confirm tour departure, and take a maximum of 16 guests, plus guides and volunteers.

How far will we kayak each day? Do I need to be an experienced sea kayaker?

We usually paddle anywhere between 5 and 11 kms over the day, depending on other activities planned for the day (gorge walking), how the group is travelling and prevailing weather conditions. The daily itinerary is designed so that we travel with the prevailing breeze. We aim to provide the opportunity for 2 snorkels at different locations throughout the day. This, along with stops on the beach for morning tea and lunch, means that the paddling is broken up into manageable sections, with usually no more than 1 hour spent in the kayak at any one time. No previous sea kayaking experience is necessary, however we recommend having at least an average level of fitness and mobility to enjoy this tour. Our guides will give you the skills you need to safely paddle your sea kayak, as well as handy hints and tips along the way.

What style of camping will I experience?

This tour is ‘base camp’ style, meaning we return to the same comfortable camp site every afternoon via vehicle. The camp is equipped with a drop toilet, solar showers, fridge, sheltered communal area, and lockable storage rooms. Tents are set up prior to your arrival, and are spacious tents that you can stand up in. Tent accommodation is twin-share; if you would like your own private tent, a $100 single supplement applies.

I'm vegetarian/gluten free/have allergies. Can you cater for this?

Yes, as long as we have ample notice, it is no problem catering for specific dietary requirements, intolerances and allergies.

How can people contact me while I'm on the tour?

There is limited mobile phone reception in the tour area, we carry a satellite phone for emergencies. This is usually reserved for outgoing calls only (to preserve battery life). If you need to be contacted urgently, our office can be contacted on 0477 685 123, and if necessary, someone will drive out to deliver a message.

Can I recharge my devices whilst at base camp?

Limited facilities are available at base camp for charging of devices. Our camp is 'off-grid'; all of our power for running our fridge etc comes from a dual battery set up, topped up by solar power. We ask that you please arrive with your devices fully charged, and switch phones to 'flight mode' once at camp (as there is no phone reception here) to save battery. Please bring spare batteries if you have them, and USB charging cables

What is this tour's Cancellation Policy?

All tour cancellation or amendment requests must be received in writing. This tour has a 30 day cancellation policy. If you cancel your tour within 30 days of tour departure, the full amount of the tour will be charged, no refunds are given. If you cancel 30 days or more prior to tour departure, you will receive a full refund, minus any non-refundable booking fees or credit card processing fees. We advise you to take out travel insurance to cover the cost of the tour in the case of emergencies, travel delays or unforeseen changes. In the event of the tour being aborted once underway for unforeseen reasons, a possible partial refund will be considered upon application for full paying customers.

COVID Cancellation Policy

If you cancel due to COVID-related government restrictions beyond your control, more than 14 days prior to the tour departure, you will receive a full refund, minus any non-refundable booking fees or credit card processing fees. If you cancel within 14 days of tour departure, due to COVID-related government restrictions beyond your control, we offer a 70% refund, and 30% (or equal to tour deposit) will be issued as a voucher to re-book, with a 3-year validity. 1 – OVERVIEW

2 – ITINERARY

Day-by-Day Itinerary

As the Shore Thing part of your package departs at 4pm on day 1, you can fly in to Learmonth on the day of departure and there is plenty of time to travel to Coral Bay and have a look around before joining us on board. Sail Ningaloo is pleased to offer airport transfers to/from Learmonth airport for all our departing tours, please contact us for pricing and to discuss options if you are unable to find flights that you believe are suitable.

All of Sail Ningaloo’s tours cater for both snorkellers and scuba divers, from the not so confident, to experienced skill levels. You can expect to be offered 3 to 4 snorkelling activities per day depending on the time of year and scuba diving is offered on average 1 – 2 of those times, depending on the conditions of the day and sites visited. Being a shallow fringing reef, you can see & experience the best Ningaloo has to offer in shallow protected coral lagoons in any weather.

Once you arrive in Coral Bay take the short transfer to board Shore Thing at the local marine facility for a 4pm departure. The journey begins as we set sail in protected waters, winding our way through spectacular dense coral formations that surround Coral Bay. Enjoy a late afternoon snorkel or scuba dive before enjoying a magical sunset over the Indian Ocean as the vessel sails to its overnight anchorage.

Following breakfast, enjoy a morning snorkel or scuba dive such as Pandora’s Garden, a beautiful coral garden exhibiting stunning plate coral formations and home to numerous marine turtles. After morning tea, we sail northwards via Batemans Bay, home to a resident population of coastal Manta Rays that frequent the inner reef to mate, give birth and feed. Enjoy a discussion on Manta Ray biology and behavior along the Ningaloo Reef with your guide, whilst we search for these graceful rays to snorkel with. Enjoy a freshly prepared buffet lunch before we navigate along the breath-taking Stanley Pools and explore the edge of the contrasting waters where the sand has been shaped by the waters movement to form distinct pools of deep blue water. We seek out dugongs, dolphins and humpback whales (seasonal, June – October) as we travel to our afternoon snorkeling and diving destinations on the way into Chabjuwardoo Bay for our overnight anchorage.

Sailing north towards Point Cloates, your crew and expert guides will select the best snorkel & scuba diving sites based on the conditions. Sites we visit over the next couple of days are only visited by Shore Thing and have been personally named by the Sail Ningaloo crew. Some of our favorites include The Fishbowl, Holey Moley, Turtle Pond and The Lost City. We sail past the resting site of The Stefano, and Jane’s Bay, where survivors of this shipwreck made it to shore, an incredible tale of survival with assistance from the Aboriginal inhabitants of the North-West cape. This afternoon step ashore at Point Cloates and relish in the tranquility of watching the sun set over the vast Indian Ocean, with a birds eye view from the top of the sand dunes. Return to Shore Thing for a sumptuous 2-course dinner and review your photos, or the images the crew has collected over the day, of the various species of reef fish and corals. Learn and discuss the unique behaviors of the marine creatures you have observed.

After a hearty breakfast, your crew and guides will select the best snorkel & scuba diving sites around the Point Cloates area based on the conditions. Some of our favorites include Cloates Corner, The Clam Graveyard, The Benan Shipwreck and Central Station, seeing hundreds of species of colourful reef fish and a good chance to see reef sharks and turtles cruising by, as well as a huge variety of smaller critters, including spectacular nudibranchs & octopus. We sail into Norwegian Bay, passing the ruins of the historic whaling station, abandoned in the 1950’s. Learn about life in the whaling days on this remote stretch of coastline, where Humpback Whales migrate along the coast in their thousands. Have the opportunity to snorkel the Fin Shipwreck, an old whaling chaser that was wrecked during a cyclone in 1923 & now lies in shallow water inside the reef lagoon, a haven for reef fish & other marine life.

Enjoy a leisurely morning kayak or SUP along the secluded coastline, keeping an eye out for large rays resting and turtles feeding in the shallow waters. Experience another thrilling snorkel or scuba dive in the Point Cloates area before we wind our way back towards Point Maud for our afternoon anchorage. Some of our favourite snorkel & scuba dive sites include The Minefield, The Ravine and Lannie’s Lumps, where you have the chance to see large groupers, rare loggerhead turtles, moray eels and fascinating coral formations. Passing North Reef, we keep an eye out for Manta Rays before snorkelling North Reef Nursery, a nursery area for schools of sweetlips and snapper and a great opportunity to find reef sharks and rays resting in small coral caves. Snorkel along sandy underwater pathways fringed by hard coral outcrops rising to the waters surface. Relax on the deck as the day winds down, enjoying your last night on Shore Thing.

Before a sumptuous buffet lunch, enjoy one or two last snorkels or scuba dives, our favourites include The Ridge, The Stag Fores, or the fascinating Asho’s Gap, a cleaning station for grey reef sharks. Watch as the sharks swim up to a large cabbage coral and hold themselves in the currents with their mouths open, whilst small cleaner fish dart in and out of their mouths and gills.

After lunch on board, return to Coral Bay approximately 12:30pm for your transfer to your accommodation in either Coral Bay or Exmouth and spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach or by the pool, exploring the Ningaloo Discovery Centre & Aquarium if in Exmouth, or simply enjoying a cool beverage at one of the local cafes or breweries.

Day 7 – Humpback Whale Swim

Join your complimentary transfer to board your day-tour vessel to go in search for some of Ningaloo Reef’s largest marine mammals …. the majestic Humpback Whales. Swimming alongside these awe-inspiring giants is simply an incredible encounter you will never forget and Ningaloo Reef is the only place in Western Australia you can do so. Humpback whales are renowned for their playful behaviour, such as tail-slapping and breaching. A spotter plane is used to guide the vessels to the Humpback Whales they deem most suitable to attempt an in-water interaction with, therefore maximizing the success rate. You’ll feel dwarfed by a whale’s massive size, but swimmers will only be allowed to enter the water with a whale that is calm and relaxed, and not showing any signs of playful behaviour.

Humpback Whale swim tours are day snorkelling tours only (scuba diving interactions not permitted under local licenses), available July-Oct.

A prearranged transfer back to Learmonth Airport for your departing flight. Relax and reminisce on the wonders of Ningaloo and your adventures of the last week as you prepare to depart.

“We spent 5 idyllic days on the Shore Thing… If you enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving with delightful, knowledgeable and professional crew then this Ningaloo Reef tour is perfect for you.”

“If you have any worries about sea sickness, don’t be concerned. The Shore Thing stays within Ningaloo Reef in the calmer waters and it wasn’t an issue at all.”

“We really enjoyed our time on the Shore Thing and would love to return some day. We feel that we got rare and privileged access to Ningaloo Reef as the staff knew all the fantastic spots to dive at.”

“5 stars from us and well done to Luke and Lannie for running such a professional exceptional business with a genuine commitment to the satisfaction and enjoyment of the guests hosted”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

2024 is the year for stargazing – here are the best places to see the skies

author image

Milky Way Galaxy rising over Welsh rural landscape

So far this year, we’ve witnessed a solar eclipse , a devil comet and a pink moon .

Astronomers say this year will be the best to view the Northern Lights in more than two decades thanks to the sun reaching solar maximum – when the star’s activity is at its greatest.

Unsurprisingly, interest in places where guests can gaze up in awe as the galaxy unfolds above them is at fever pitch.

Here are some of the world’s best star-spotting stays.

Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

Dark Sky Tourism at Ningaloo Reef, Australia

A natural playground of rust-coloured soil, turquoise lagoons and an impossibly starry night sky twinkling high above the Indian Ocean, Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef is a renowned hotspot for avid astronomers.

Stay in safari-style tents as zero light pollution affords magnificent views of the Milky Way’s iconic dust lanes – known as the Great Celestial Emu by some Aboriginal tribes – as well as Mercury, Mars and shooting stars that glide across the silver-studded sky.

Blending unobtrusively into its desert location, this eco-conscious beachfront resort is also a breeding ground for sea turtle hatchlings that rely solely on the light of the moon to navigate them into the ocean; an intrepid journey that guests can watch nightly under the soft glow of solar-lit lanterns.

Wilderness Little Kulala, Namib Desert, Namibia

Wilderness Safaris - Star Bed Experiences

Kicking bubble baths topped with rose petals to the curb, Wilderness Little Kulala has upped the romance quotient with its star beds – raised open-air beds set a 30-minute drive from the main camp offering complete seclusion in one of the most naturally dark places on Earth.

Camouflaged at the foot of Namibia’s massive Sossusvlei Dunes, the star beds sit seamlessly in the Namib Desert, a recognised Dark Sky Reserve with wide views stretching from the Milky Way’s southern Crux constellation to bold, bright Cygnus in the north, and Jupiter, which begins to dazzle at dawn.

Accompanied by an after-dark orchestra of grunting buffalos, roaring lions and trumpeting elephants, sleep might not be a guarantee, but the tranquillity of endless space is.

wildernessdestinations.com

Elan Valley Hotel, Mid Wales

Milky Way Galaxy rising over Welsh rural landscape

You don’t have to cross continents to indulge in a bit of star spotting – in fact, Elan Valley near Rhayader in Powys is a 72sq mile International Dark Sky Park that was recently ranked ninth best place in the world for stargazing.

Granted silver-tier status by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) in 2015, meaning the entire area is protected against light pollution, Elan Valley is known as a gatekeeper of the sky’s secrets as its celestial landscape changes monthly.

In May, noctilucent – or ‘night-shining’ clouds emerge, spreading high-latitude ice crystals illuminated by the sun; June uncovers thousands of green-glowing comets and galaxies; while July 17 to August 24 delivers the theatrics of the Perseid meteor shower – with about 150 meteors per hour slamming into the Earth’s atmosphere at 36 miles per second and exploding in a trail of burning fireballs. Woah!

Refuge du Montenvers Overnight Glacier Experience, Chamonix

Overnight Glacier Experience, Chamonix

Chamonix’s mythical massifs are known as a mecca for climbers who think nothing of clinging on to their rockfaces for fun; thankfully, there’s now a far less exhausting way to hit the Alpine heights and stargaze above the clouds.

Sitting high in the Chamonix Alps, the Refuge du Montenvers hotel is perched 1,903m up on the edge of the Mer de Glace, a seven-kilometre long, 200m deep ‘sea of ice’. Its overnight glacier experience begins with sundowners overlooking France’s largest glacier before a fancy three-course dinner and an evening of astronomy spotting shooting stars as they highlight the mountaintops and clear views of Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn as they rise and set throughout the early hours.

Dark Skies and Northern Lights Tour, Finnish Lapland

Dark Skies and Northern Lights Tour Finnish Lapland, Aurora Zone

Solar maximum lasts until October and is the peak of the sun’s 11-year activity cycle, meaning a blockbuster season for Northern Lights seekers, particularly in Scandinavia, where
the already spectacular aurora displays are set to be even more wild.

Appearing like swathes of neon silk that dance across the sky in bursts of bright green, pink and purple, this phenomenal light show is caused by stormy activity on the surface of the sun and there’s no better place to grab a front-row seat than underneath northern Finland’s dark skies.

Aurora Zone’s six-day guided tour includes an aurora workshop, an aurora hunt and two evenings of sky-watching at a secluded camp
in Finnish Lapland right in the heart of the dazzling action.

The Lookout Bubble, Port Lympne Safari Park, Kent

The new Lookout Bubble ? Port Lympne, a wildlife reserve in Kent,

A brilliant option for entry-level astronomers, Port Lympne’s The Lookout Bubble is a new addition to The Aspinall Foundation’s 600-acre endangered animal reserve.

Tucked away in a secluded corner of the grounds, the luxury ‘bubble’ is more of a transparent cluster with a cosy observation area adjoining a bedroom with a big freestanding bath, so guests can sleep and bathe beneath the stars.

With a cool, illustrated Stargazers Guide provided, outlining handy tips for exploring the skies, fun facts and scannable QR codes to help budding star spotters know their planets from their constellations, on a clear, cloudless night it’s possible to see The Plough, The Big Bear, The Seated Queen and The Swan as they twinkle directly overhead.
