Mae Martin

Mae Martin is an award-winning comedian, actor, writer and producer who this year received the “Rising Star Award” at Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. Their new stand-up special SAP, directed by Abbi Jacobson, launched on Netflix in Spring 2023 to positive reviews and marked Mae’s hour-long comedy special debut. In SAP, Mae reflects on a world off its axis, from a mythical moose encounter to the gender spectrum in "Beauty and the Beast."

Mae is included in Variety magazine’s prestigious “Comedy Impact Report” and named as part of The Telegraph’s “50 Funniest Comedians of the 21 st Century.”

Mae was crowned the winner of TASKMASTER season 15, the hit comedy game series airing on Channel 4 in the UK. Next up, Mae will co-showrun, star, and executive produce the recently announced limited series for Netflix entitled TALL PINES, which Mae also created. TALL PINES is a thriller set in a bucolic but sinister town that explores the insidious underbelly of the troubled teen industry and the eternal struggle between one generation and the next.

Mae is best known for creating, starring, and writing FEEL GOOD, a critically acclaimed drama-comedy series, for which they were nominated for a BAFTA Award. The first season, co-starring Lisa Kudrow and Charlotte Ritchie, launched in the US and globally on Netflix and on Channel 4 in the UK to widespread praise and a perfect 100% “Certified Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes . FEEL GOOD also won The Edinburgh TV Award 2020 for “Best Series” as well as the “Best Comedy Drama Series” at the C21 Awards. The second season was lauded by fans and critics alike, including Jude Dry of IndieWire who said the season was “…so damn good you may want to watch it all over again.”

Mae’s acting credits include a memorable guest-starring role on Season Two of HBO MAX’s THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT opposite Kaley Cuoco.

Their previous stand-up show, DOPE was nominated for “Best Comedy Show” at the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Awards while earning four- and five-star reviews in the UK. The show has since been turned in to a stand-up special for Netflix as part of their global stand-up series, COMEDIANS OF THE WORLD.

Mae is also the author of Can Everyone Please Calm Down?: A Guide to 21 st Century Sexuality , published in May 2019 by Hachette imprint Wren and Rook.

Martin brings their signature humour to the classroom while speaking with trans historian Jules Gill-Peterson ( read one of her many books on the subject ) to explore gender studies of the 1960s and 70s, while looking into current gender controversies.

We spoke with Martin about why they wanted to host the episode, what fascinated them about science and gender, plus they revealed some of their favourite things on the subject.

Q&A with Mae Martin

Q: What excited you the most when you were offered the gig to host this CBC doc episode? A: The Nature of Things is iconic! I was excited to be part of such a Canadian institution. When I spoke to the team, including Michelle Mama — the incredible director who I’ve known for a long time — I just felt so confident that this would be a really wonderful, rigorously researched and uplifting project.

Q: What did you particularly love about how this documentary dispels myths about gender identity? A: I just love the tone of the documentary, which is so celebratory and light-hearted. I hope people who might normally think that this topic isn’t for them, or relevant to them, will let their guard down and see that it’s not scary, it’s super interesting.

Q: As a self-described nerd for science, what was the most fascinating thing you wanted to learn about? A: I’m always just so interested to think about how, throughout history, scientists’ values and beliefs are influenced by the wider culture they live in. Their personal views can influence the questions they choose to pose and how they investigate those questions, and the ripple effect of that can lead to our dominant paradigms. It’s exciting to engage with and unpick that in an effort to try to reach the most objective, unbiased, scientific truth about ourselves. To uncover some of the nuances and wonderful complex reality that’s been blotted out by blind spots or bias in the past.

Q: What kind of impact do you think this would have had if you had access to this doc and material growing up? A: It’s kind of difficult to even imagine. As a child of the 90’s, I grew up in a very binary world (not that I don’t deeply love boy bands and girl bands). It took thirty-five years of feeling like a square peg in a round hole, and like there was something wrong with me, to finally pull the thread that led to me being able to live a happy and authentic life as a trans person. I think this doc would probably have helped me to feel comfortable sooner, and less alone.

Q: You ask this question in the doc so I’d like to turn this question to you: Is there anything you wish scientists would turn their gaze onto? A: Hmm… well, if there’s no planet then there’s not much to investigate, so climate change is always at the top of my list. The eternally frustrating thing, though, is how as science bravely presents the truth to us, we have an uncanny ability to ignore it. Policy always seems to take decades to catch up. The World Health Organisation and the majority of the world’s leading scientists have agreed for some time, for instance, that gender is a social construct, but I bet that’ll be hotly debated for years to come unfortunately.

Q: Given the timeliness of the doc in today’s climate, what kind of conversations do you hope this brings about? A: Any conversation that comes from a place of curiosity and empathy, and isn’t charged with weird politics would be great! I also think it would be nice if it helps people to understand that you don’t have to be trans to be interested in exploring gender as a concept, what it means to you, and what role it plays in our world.

Q: You mentioned connecting with Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. What are some films and/or characters you connected with that explore gender (and/or sexuality)? A: Ha ha! I wouldn’t say that Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast actually explores gender, I just felt a kinship with that candle and thought it was funny. I remember watching Stand By Me as a kid and relating so hard to that gang of kids, particularly River Phoenix’s character. I still dress like him. Also, this is niche, but, “The Gump” in Return To Oz .

Q: What are some of your recommendations on the best books to help educate on the topic? A: I really need to read more, but I loved He/She/They by Schuyler Bailar and Life Isn’t Binary by Alex Iantaffi and Meg-John Barker. I also wrote a book called Can Everyone Please Calm Down? which is a book about sexuality and gender for young people, and it’s going to be reprinted soon.

Q: Can you share some of your favourite brands you feel most comfortable in? A: These days I’m into these jeans by a Japanese brand called Kato , and I love really simple soft cotton staples so I like Buck Mason , or this company LadyWhite Co or Sunray Sportswear . When I dress up I have some really nice Gucci suits that I wear over and over. Doc Martens and vintage Levis always make me feel good, too.

Directed by A League of Their Own ’s Abbi Jacobson, the award-winning comedian, writer, and actor takes us on a comedic journey in Vancouver, Canada’s Vogue Theater. From an encounter with a mythical moose to exploring the gender spectrum in Beauty and the Beast , the nonbinary comedian’s lovable, self-deprecating, and slightly philosophical brand of comedy is sure to be a hit with fans.

Aside from filming All Things Comedy -produced SAP last year, 2022 was a great year for Martin. They competed on the English-Canadian version of the comedy show LOL: Last One Laughing and starred as Grace St. James in the critically acclaimed HBO show The Flight Attendant . They also participated in Netflix’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration . The special was the largest-ever gathering of LGBTQ+ comics recorded at Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival earlier this year.

Now, they’re starting early 2023 off with their latest comedy special. Martin has been performing stand-up for years, but their star began to shine even brighter when they wrote and starred in the romantic comedy Feel Good .

Now, all eyes are on them, in SAP . Check out SAP ’s trailer while you impatiently wait for Martin’s comedy special to debut.

SAP premieres globally on Netflix on March 28, 2023.

Toronto comedian Mae Martin to host Canadian Screen Awards

mae martin tour canada

By The Canadian Press

Posted February 22, 2024 12:46 pm.

Last Updated February 22, 2024 4:12 pm.

Toronto native Mae Martin will host the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.

Organizers of Canada’s biggest film and television awards bash say the comedian will MC a gala in front of an audience in Toronto, which will be whittled down to an hour-long special that will air hours after the event.

It will be the second year in a row that the celebration won’t be broadcast live.

The Screen Awards have traditionally been a star-studded live show in front of an audience.

Academy CEO Tammy Frick said pre-taping allows the gala to showcase more “industry-heavy” elements that might exhaust a TV audience.

Last year’s Screen Awards were hosted by Canadian comic Samantha Bee, who taped her segments remotely in New York, weeks in advance of the show.

By contrast, this year’s broadcast will feature moments from the gala hosted by Martin several hours earlier, and recorded segments.

Martin, who currently hosts the comedy podcast “Handsome” with Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster, said they’re “elated” to celebrate “all the amazing talent in Canada,” and plans on asking several stars for selfies.

The 2024 Canadian Screen Awards air May 31 on CBC and CBC Gem.

Nominees will be announced March 6.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 22, 2024.

Mae Martin

Lisa Kudrow and Adrian Lukis in Feel Good

mae martin tour canada

The series tells the story of a stand up comedian who is a former addict, and follows her as she falls in love, falls off the wagon, and finds her way in life. Martin says she started opening up in her own stand-up, and it eventually morphed into the series.

She notes, "I think it was a gradual process where it started with my stand up just noticing that's a more vulnerable - I was seeing that more people were connecting with it. It's such an  instant barometer when you do stand up. You can gauge right away the reaction. So I was just finding that more and more I was writing more personal things.

"And then with the show initially, I wanted the character to have a different name. I didn't want the character to be called Mae and we had different ideas, and then it just sort of gradually became more and more authentic.

"I think season two is probably more personal than season one. Season one is where I was at about 10 years ago, with addiction and various things. But season two really feels like the character's figuring it out in real time with me. So, yeah, it's pretty wild."

The transition is a natural one, according to Martin, "In season one, those external things are causing problems in the relationship. They're dealing with the external things like drugs or my girlfriend's character's repression and things like that.

"And then in season two, those things are stripped away so they have to deal with the things that are at the root of those causes. And so I think by nature, that is going to end up being a little bit more personal."

Martin says that the plan was always to limit the series to two seasons. She explains, "I guess it's a British thing as well. And I guess it was more that we [Martin and co-writer Joe Hampson] knew exactly what we wanted those two seasons to be. And the thought of just continually throwing problems at that couple was so - seems so sadist - like seems really sadistic in a way. It always appealed to us, the idea of just telling a complete love story.

"I mean, there's still some ambiguity at the end I think. But we wanted to leave them in a good place, where you feel like they could potentially figure it all out. And it's nice to walk away from it and be like, 'oh, I've done the best I can with that,' and on to the next thing.

"I hope it's satisfying for people who were invested in that relationship after season one. We wanted it to be satisfying enough for them, also realistic about adult relationships,"

Getting the tone right depended in large part on casting the right actors. Martin explains, "Well, me and my co-writer Joe, I think we knew so clearly what we wanted the tone of the show to be. And it's a particular tone because we really wanted it to be a comedy/drama and in the truest sense where it could be really absorbed in one moment. And then in the same scene could hit you with an emotional gut punch.

"So it's tricky casting someone like that because if you're pulling from just a comedy pool of actors, you have to be careful that you're also going to get the emotional stuff and vice versa. So, yeah, we just went through a really long process with it, but I just can't believe the people that said that they'd do it.

"I can't believe Lisa Kudrow did it. I'm still shocked about it and, yeah, just some amazing people. And we knew the whole time that we wanted Charlotte Ritchie to play George. And she's a friend so it was really amazing to be able to write for someone who you already know their rhythms and the way that they move through the world, so that was exciting."

Another challenge in getting the tone right was in making sure that the characters were complete people, not good guys or bad guys, and that both the comedy and drama were served in each situation.

Martin says, "That's the stuff I like to watch. And I also think that that's the most true to life because you can be in the most awful situations, and then someone says something darkly funny. I think life is full of humor and tragedy in equal measure.

"I think one thing is we wanted to make sure there were no good guys and bad guys, and that you can have empathy towards these characters who on paper were highly problematic.

"I mean, with Mae and George, I think people's allegiance switches per episode, I hope anyway, that in one, you really feel for George. And then in the next, you want to shake them. That I think, hopefully, with casting, that appeals to people as well to play parts that were not black and white like that."

Martin, originally from Canada and living in the UK, has been doing stand up comedy since she was 13 years old. She says, "In Toronto, I started taking improv classes at Second City. And then I just got completely obsessed and started doing shows. I think I got a lot of work early on just because of the novelty of my age, so it snowballed quite quickly to where I was doing three or four shows a week.

"And then, I just was completely obsessed. I still am. I'm still just this huge comedy fan. I have a lot of affection for the comedy community and the comedy world. I hope that comes through in the show even though I also look at the darker side of it, and all that stuff."

That said, taking time out from stand up to do Feel Good was something of a needed break. Martin explains, "To be honest, being able to make Feel Good has been an amazing kind of break as well. This, year that's the longest I've gone without doing stand up since I was 13. And it definitely has been nice to be less nocturnal, but I do really miss getting in - it's the green rooms that I love.

"And it's weird because on the one hand, I guess that scene sort of introduced or it has an element of danger to it for a teenager. But it also - my love for it also totally brought me out of a lot of darkness as well.

"On my days off, I still go and watch comedy. I just - I love it. Not all of it but the good stuff. It's so good. It just makes me feel human and connected. And it's always the things that are frightening to say out loud, or that you think, 'oh no, one's going to relate to this.' And it's just so weird, and then you say it out loud, and that's the thing that people really go, 'oh my God, me too.' And they really connect to it."

Another way Martin has connected to her audience is in writing a book for young people, Can Everyone Please Calm Down?: A Guide to 21st Century Sexuality . She explains, " I wrote it a couple of years ago now. But it's something that was based on a previous stand up show I did called Us . But it was about labels, and how I wish they weren't as much of a thing.

"And the publishers said, 'what's the book that you wish you had when you were 14?' So I tried to approach it like that and - I don't know. I think some of these topics like - well, definitely right now. I don't know about in the States, but I presume it's similar to in the UK; it's like the issues around gender and things are becoming so politicized and fraught, and we just forget that it's a very human thing.

"We're talking about a very small population that's at risk. And so to take that highly politicized edge off of it, and just try and remember we're talking about things like love and things that can be lighthearted as well. And so I tried to make it funny.

"And I think the minute people feel like you're trying to teach them something, they just clam up. And so with Feel Good especially Joe and I, that was never our intention at all. We just wanted to tell a good love story and not shy away from being really specific, and trust that people across all demographics would connect to the more, yes, the universal things about love."

For the immediate future, Martin has a number of projects coming up. She says, "I really miss stand up. And I had an hour of stand up ready to go right when the pandemic hit. So I'm just getting that up on its feet again, that show, and seeing if any of it is still relevant and working towards a new stand up show and stand up tour.

"And then I'm developing a new thing with Netflix. And I got a couple other things in development, but none of them are concrete yet. It's a nebulous time, but I've got a lot of irons in the fire."

The one-hour broadcast will air on CBC and CBC Gem on May 31 at 8 p.m. ET.

Canadian comedian, actor, writer and producer Mae Martin will host the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.

The one-hour awards broadcast will air on May 31 at 8 p.m. ET on CBC and CBC Gem, with Roma Ahi and Katie Lafferty of Toronto-headquartered Makers returning as the awards producers, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (Canadian Academy) announced on Thursday (Feb. 22).

Born and raised in Toronto, Martin created and co-wrote the Netflix dramedy Feel Good , and is currently working with the streamer on their next series, Tall Pines , produced by Sphere Media. Their stand-up special SAP , directed by Abbi Jacobson, launched on Netflix last March.

The Canadian Academy announced earlier this month that Canadian Screen Week would be pushed from April to May due to a venue change, with the awards taking place across six ceremonies between May 28 to 31 at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto.

The one-hour broadcast will air shortly after the Canadian Screen Awards Gala concludes, and will include “an innovative blend of unpredictable, emotional award-show moments and unprecedented access to nominees and Special Award winners,” read the release.

The nominees for the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards will be released on March 6 at 7 a.m. ET.

“We are thrilled that Mae Martin will be hosting The 2024 Canadian Screen Awards,” said Canadian Academy CEO Tammy Frick in a statement. “They are the perfect fit for this show: a dynamic and accomplished Canadian who is breaking barriers and making waves globally both in front of and behind the camera, just like the many talented individuals who we will be celebrating during Canadian Screen Week 2024.”

Mae Martin

Mae Martin , star of Netflix ’s Feel Good series, is set to host a Canadian Screen Awards  one-hour special in late May.

The country’s national film and TV awards for the second year running will not be broadcast or streamed live this year, as happened pre-pandemic. Instead, Martin   will emcee a live-to-tape one-hour special filled with celebrity interviews and highlights from prize-giving during CSA award shows held in private and in person in Toronto.

Born and raised in Toronto, Martin as a comedian, actor, writer, and producer currently hosts the comedy podcast  Handsome , alongside Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster. Martin also created and starred in Feel Good , a semi-autobiographical comedy originally commissioned by Channel 4. Netflix streamed the comedy for a second and final season.

The absence of a live broadcast or stream for Canada’s main film and TV prize-giving event followed low ratings for the Canadian Screen Awards that pre-dated the pandemic. Katie Lafferty and Roma Ahi of Makers will return this year to produce the TV special to run on the CBC network and CBS Gem, the streaming service, on May 31.

The nominees for the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards will be announced on March 6. The prize-giving will take place during the Canadian Screen Week from May 28 to 31 in Toronto, with Mae Martin hosting the final awards show gala.

Mae Martin Is Releasing an Album of "the Most Mediocre, Emotional Songs"

Canadian comic Mae Martin is an accomplished standup and actor — but now they're entering the world of music, and plan to release a debut album this year.

The Feel Good star announced the album on a recent appearance on WTF with Marc Maron . "I'm doing earnest [music]," they told Maron. "I'm putting out an album this year of the most mediocre, emotional songs."

They noted that the music is guitar-based and continued, "I'm embarrassed by it, and so I don't know how I'm ever going to promote it. I might just put it out quietly."

They went on to explain that they have a record label lined up to release the album. "It's fucked," they said. "I've always played music and played sad Elliott Smith covers and stuff. When I moved to L.A., I knew more musicians than comics out here, and so I did an album. If a musician listens to it, I think they'll be like, 'This is very mediocre.' But I think, hopefully, people who like me will get that it's an extension of [me]."

Martin has occasionally combined their comedy with music. They teamed up with fellow Canadian comedian Carolyn Taylor last year for "Love Is Pain" from Taylor's comedy doc I Have Nothing .

Rating: 5 out of 5 Vancouver show by Daniel on 2022-12-19. Absolutely remarkable, sensational show. Mae Martin's material focuses on the "usual" kind of standup topics; parents, relationships and odd situations, but somehow their particular delivery remains unique, hysterically funny, and connects with the audience in such a beautiful, open and vulnerable way.
