Serro Scotty trailers were built from 1957 until April, 1997, when the plant in Irwin, Pennsylvania burned down. The plant later reopened in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, but never again to make travel trailers. Today, known as Mobile Concepts by Scotty, they manufacture fire safety “houses”. Due to their easy availability, low cost, and the increasing population of retiring baby boomers, there has been a resurgence of popularity for these small trailers that can be towed by even a 4-cylinder, and stored in the family garage.

Years built

Serro Scotty trailers were built from 1957 until April, 1997

• 1956: John Serro, recently retired as a car salesman, builds a 16 1/2′ trailer in his garage that no one wanted to buy.
• 1957: Serro introduces a 10′ teardrop trailer. 225 of them were built through 1960. This trailer was called the Sportsman, Jr.
• 1958: The 13′ Sportsman, Sr. was added. Later to be called a “Gaucho”. This trailer really took off.
• 1959: A 12′ rear-door model is introduced. This model lasts only 2 years.
• 1960: Sportsman, Jr. (teardrop), Sportsman, Sr. (13′) and a 15′ model are offered. Last year for the teardrop.
• 1961: three 13′ models were offered: Mattress, Gaucho, and Front Kitchen, as well as two new 15′ Front Kitchen models, Sportsman 15 and Scotty with Potty 15. Wings were an option.
• 1962: This is the last year for the 15′ Front Kitchen!
• 1963: The Bristol, OK plant opens and the trailers are now offered in aqua and white as well as polished aluminum. Scottyland, a 230 acre campground, at that time, solely for Scotty campers, opens.
• 1964: Only aqua and white trailers are now available. The “split-level” 15′ HiLander is introduced.
• 1965: The HiLander is restyled to move the “Sun Deck” forward of the door for easier entry.
• 1966: The “Front Kitchen” becomes known as the Tonga. Also, the Royal Scott, a 17 1/2′ one-piece fiberglass trailer was built. It proved too expensive and too heavy and was never manufactured.
• 1968: A new plant opens in Ashburn, GA. This is the last year for the Tonga model.
• 1969: Only the 13′ and 15′ Gauchos are offered, along with the 15′ HiLander The trailers move to the 60″ wide front and back windows.
• 1970: Most of the Scottys offered have jalousy windows in the door.
• 1971: Most still have jalousy windowed doors, and the interiors move from the blue spatter to a fake woodgrain.
• 1973: A tan panel is added to the lower front of the trailers, in addition to the aqua and white. An 18′ model of the HiLander is offered, commonly called a “Trunkback”
• 1975: A new model called the JS715 replaces the 15′ Gaucho model. This model had optional top bunks above the back gaucho and the dinette (JS=John Serro, 7=sleeps 7 & 15=length). Also offered were the 13′ Gaucho, the 15′ HiLander, and the 18′ HiLander.
• 1978: Trailers now have a tan and bittersweet stripe down the middle of the sides are now used with the aqua.
• 1979: First year for no aqua to be used on the Scotty. Also the first year for the jagged stripe down the side, using tan, bittersweet, orange, and black. Lots of new models introduced this year – the 12.5′, 13.5′, 16′, 16.5′, 17′, 19.5′, 24.5′, 26.5′, 28′ and 32′.
• 1980s: Trailers are more boxy shaped and Serro offers a full line of trailers, all the way from 13′ through 50′ park models.
• 1982: A new 13 1/2 model is introduced. The door is located behind the axle and the kitchen is in the rear. It has a bathroom!
• 1985: By this year, the name Regalia is introduced.
• 1990: The 1990 Scottys are top of the line.
• 1995: Serro adds motorhomes to the mix.
• 1997: Serro plant burns to the ground and Serro stops manufacturing travel trailers. Scotty is still in business in Pennsylvania but is now known as Mobile Concepts by Scotty. They now make Police and Fire Safety trailers.

Taking a road trip with a travel trailer is fun, but choices for trailers are pretty limited for those with smaller, less capable vehicles. Owners of a small car shouldn’t fret, because you can still hitch up to a vintage camper that weighs basically nothing. This 1964 Serro Scotty Sportsman is a pint-sized camper that weighs in at just 975 pounds.

I often write a lot about palatial RVs that should probably require its owners to have a CDL to drive. Even I have a big transit bus with a gross vehicle weight rating of nearly 40,000 pounds. But you really don’t need to drive a mobile penthouse. How about a travel trailer that’s still practical, yet can be towed by even the smallest of cars? That’s what fiberglass campers offer, as well as this:

According to the National Serro Scotty Organization, Serro got its start when John Serro, a retired car salesman, built a 16.5-foot trailer in his garage. Nobody bought it, but it didn’t stop him from opening up a company to build travel trailers. Serro started in earnest in 1957 with a 10-foot Scotty Sportsman teardrop (later called Sportsman Jr.) before adding a 13-foot Scotty Sportsman Sr. in 1958 and a 12-foot Scotty Sportsman 12 model in 1959. The Sportsman 12 is exceedingly rare, with just six known to still exist.

Serro expanded even further in the 1960s, adding a 15-foot model as well as opening a plant in Oklahoma. The Scotty trailers were popular enough that Serro opened up Scottyland, a 230 acre campground just for Scotty owners.

The little trailer you see before you was built in 1964.

It’s a 13-foot Scotty Sportsman. Based on the floorplans available for the 13-foot unit this one is likely the Mattress model. On the outside, it’s clean with a gorgeous two-tone paint scheme.

The layout of the camper is pretty simple. There’s a table and seating up front, a small kitchen unit in the middle, a couple of cabinets and a bed.

There is no shower and no toilet. You have more or less similar amenities as a pop-up camper, but with hard walls. One thing I love about this camper is that the color theming continues inside, too.

And as I mentioned before, it makes up for its lack of features by being incredibly light. At just 975 pounds it could be towed by just about anything. I’ve towed more weight with a Smart Fortwo before. Including its tongue, total length is around 16 feet, which is short enough to fit in some garages!

The seller for this Scotty Sportsman says that it’s road-ready without any leaks. It just needs a set of tires. It’s unclear whether this one has been restored or not. But if it hasn’t, it has survived incredibly well over the decades.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Serro. The company continued to expand through the decades, producing trailers as long as 32-feet-long and even producing park models. Serro even made a motorhome in 1995. But in 1997, Serro’s factory burned down, putting an end to camper production. Serro Scotty trailers would be revived in 2007 just to end production again in 2014. Now, the name basically exists in name only.

The price for this piece of camping history is a reasonable $ 7,200 . Go ahead and hitch this up to whatever you have!

by Paul Hecht John Serro was on to something when he branded the tag line, ''Travel Right, Travel Light, The Scotty Way.'' In fact, he was way ahead of his time when he designed and built an affordable, easy to tow, totally self-contained travel trailer in his garage in 1956. By the 1990s the Serro Scotty brand had exploded into a full line of trailers including fifth wheels, 50-foot park models and eventually a line of motorhomes. But in 1997 the bright light of the Serro Scotty trailer company took a dark turn when its plant in Irwin, Pennsylvania, burned down, marking the end of the production line. Eventually, in 2007, Serro Scotty Worldwide was formed and a new version modeled after John Serro's original vision was back on the market and can be spotted alongside its older sibling in campgrounds around the country.

This book details John Serro's journey from producing the first 16' Scotty Pup trailer in 1956 to the more popular 18' HiLander produced in the 60's and 70's. Because Scotty Trailers were not produced on an assembly line, no two are exactly alike. The Scotty line, while fairly extensive (ranging from teardrops to fully self-contained 18' models), was simple in design, most sporting the iconic aqua and white paint scheme, and all stamped with the Scotty Pup logo. Not only are Scotty Trailers quintessentially retro, they are lightweight, very affordable and easy to restore, and accessible to everyone! Paul Hecht, an Interior designer, has appeared on several television shows as a design expert and was a series regular on Lifetime Television's "Merge" with Lisa Rinna. He purchased and restored his first trailer while in college and recently stumbled upon a Serro Scotty in the Pennsylvania countryside, which he quickly transformed into his design office, complete with vintage wallpaper, chandeliers and pink flamingos.

Hi thank you for looking at my listing I'm putting this up for sale as I really don't use it I use it about once a year and during winter months I seek indoor storage for it which it currently is in. It is a 1965 Ciro Scotty sportsman it's I think about 13 foot in length. I have installed a 110 V air conditioner that is hidden under the rear bed that Vents and drains through the floor board the rear couch cushions have been removed and a cut down futon mattress has replaced it. Trailer has been rewired front to back 12v and 110v has new breaker box and ice box was removed in lore of a fridge with freezer. City water piping has been replaced local water works as it should tank is drained and has some rv antifreeze in it currently. Front cushions are original to unit and are in nice shape still. Has front dinet bed layout with under seat storage. Also has propane lantern light has gas stove please not i have not used heat shield is rotted under burners from prior roof leak i never need it never lighted it more of a for show thing use at own risk! Floors are solid and original! This one has optional closet and New curtains to match period. Outside you will find original hitch coupler has been updated to common 2" ball new safety chains original jack still working and coaster wheel new 7 pin rv plug down to a distribution box for wiring, period correct looking led marker lights, led bulls eye flash taillights on stainless flanges and original autolamp152 license plate lamp. Front and back of this unit were white when i got it paint washed right off so i ended up polishing it it has marks shows its been around the block but its old it is it can be obnoxious in sunlight do its many contours reflecting light like a mirror. In the last 400 miles i have installed new kumho radial tires rated at 80k new wheels spider hubcaps and stainless beauty rings repacked wheel bearing with Lucas lifetime grease Basically got it to the point i would take it any ware. Roof was scraped of years of patch silicone and correct camper roof seem was applied one roof bow was replaced do to rot there is a small patch in interior panel that was bad i used for access. Window rubbers were replaced with silicone bead. Most exterior screws were replaced with stainless steel Believe rear window has a crack in it all windows do open close and lock as should including door and side compartment. Windows have many old water decals of journeys this little guy has been on years ago. it has a awning rail but i never got around to purchasing a awning was having a hard time finding a color i liked when i found it there was a long wait just never happened It weights around 1100lbs very easy to pull goes down road strait Questions please ask my cell call or text 570fournine96343 i will add more interior pics in next day or so thanks for looking

Partially restored vintage Serro Scotty, Sportsman Travel-Camper trailer. New water tank, water line, dual faucet, (pump or pressurized from shore supply) All new Gas lines with a 2 burner cook top and a new energy efficient propane heater. 110 volt refrigerator, with an inverter so it can work on 12 volts also. All cabinets have been finished with quality wood veneer, and sealed with clear varnish. The door latch was replaced with an EASY-Egress latch, and the back window was replaced with an Emergency Egress window. I have all the parts to finish her including Energy saving LED lighting, Electric cord, 12 volt d.c. to 120 volt a.c. Inverter, 120 volt a.c. to 12 volt d.c., to charge batteries when plugged in to shore power. Created over fifty years ago, its style perfectly fits the current rage for tear drop campers. Its not retro –its original. At 13 feet long (including the tongue) and 82 inches high, this will comfortably fit in most any garage. Weighing only 1,300 pounds, it is easy to tow even with a small four cylinder modern or antique car. Stand up comfortably, electrical outlets, air conditioned, refrigerator, two sleeping areas and a dinette combine to make this an outstanding display and camping unit. Perfectly suited to be displayed and appreciated at an antique car show or while camping in the great outdoors, this rare vintage classic and its retro design commands a lot of attention everywhere it goes! The exterior and interior have been COMPLETELY RESTORED throughout to better than original condition. The restoration process has been a labor of love where the original specifications are met or most often exceeded and where no time or expense has been spared. 1970 Serro Scotty Sportsman 13ft camper for sale. I purchased this as a project but have realized I don't have time for it so its up for sale.Camper is in good condition for the year it has dents and dings. doesn't seem to leak now but has water marks and some wood rot so it leaked at some pointits in original condition nothing has been updated has original fridge, stove and heater. tires are in descent shape no dry rot. wheel bearing have not been checked. I've towed it about 10 mile since I purchased it.camper needs a good cleaning and a bunch of smaller repairs rear lights work brake/ turn signal and driving light side markers need new bulbs license plate light needs replaced it doesn't workone side window is cracked doesn't leak rear window corner is busted and taped over doesn't leak but needs replacedno safety chains attached to tongue they have to be wrapped around it have not tested stove fridge or heater has receiver for 1 7/8 ball roof has some wood rot around roof vent and needs fixed light water marks under all windows rear of camper has a strip of aluminum that needs fixed rear passenger corner has dent and needs fixed I've tried to list all the things I've noticed. please look at the photos closely and ask question pickup only.

1975 Serro Scotty Sportsman - Gaucho Series. 13'x7' Single Axle 2"x2" hitch Camper has been 'glamped' out with new fabrics, paint, counter and table top, tin backsplash, new wiring, plenty of outlets, screen door, new door lock, good tires with brand new spare and recently packed bearings. The gaucho couch easily folds down to a double bed and the table drops to a twin. Amazing amount of storage for such a little bug! The front mounted propane tank has been removed leaving room for a storage rack or a built-in air conditioner. Comes with a newer electric fridge, full body cover and attached awning. I removed the sink and stove (old and disgusting). This is a much better set-up with the extra counter space, but I'll also throw in a newer microwave and toaster oven. I just picked up this old trailer. I thought before I start restoring it I'd try to sell it first. I believe it's a 1959 (Serial# 5913502 ) 13ft. Serro Scotty Sportsman. This has a High-Top add on that makes it easy to Stand Up inside. I've never seen one like this, perhaps the top was homemade. There is NO step down in the floor like other Scottys I've seen, but it may have had it at one time. As you can see from my pictures , it is a great candidate for a restoration project. Needs some wood panels replaced, and aluminum panels (skirting) screwed back in place. All Glass is good. Needs tires, (and most everything else), Interior needs to be completely redone. There is NO Title, I will give you a Bill Of Sale for the trailer. This is not a bad trailer , I usually Over describe items, this would be a relatively easy and Fun restoration project You can pick it up in Powhatan, Va. 23139 (about 20 miles west of Richmond) This is a COMPLETE Project, so keep that in mind!
