Amanda Goad is the most amazing recruiter I have worked with. She is the most responsive and go-getter. She is in constant contact with you or hospitals to get you offers and/or advocating for you. She is super motivated and helpful. If you have the opportunity to use her, you will not regret it.

Needed to move across country to be next to my partner, but blindly jumping into a full time job for a hospital system I was not familiar with was out of the question. Host Healthcare (Natalie G specifically) stood by me and helped me fulfill my absurdly specific requests. I was a first time time traveler and I couldn't have made it without the support I received!
Just finished my first contract with Host Healthcare (fifth overall) and they were amazing! Specifically my recruiter Jenny Berroth. Jenny was so helpful and easy to communicate with. I had a couple issues come up and Jenny was all over them and took care of everything so I could just concentrate on being a nurse, while she handled the rest. I can’t recommend Host and Jenny enough! You have to give Host and Jenny a try, you’ll be glad you did!

9 Best Travel Nurse Companies of 2023

Are you ready to try travel nursing? Working with a travel nurse staffing agency can make it easier to find travel nursing jobs and to negotiate pay rates and benefits. An agency gives you a point of contact who can help you navigate job listings and compensation packages.

The sooner you find the right company, the faster you can start traveling.

Click here for today’s top travel nursing opportunities.

How To Find The Right Travel Nursing Company

When looking for the best travel nursing company to suit your needs, you first have to know what your needs are.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering travel nursing companies:

  • Are you going to need health insurance?
  • How important is it that you contribute to your retirement?
  • Do you prefer to find your own housing or do you want your company to find it for you?
  • Where do you want to travel?
  • How do you plan on getting there?
  • Do you plan on working per diem as well?
  • What kind of healthcare facilities are you hoping to work in?

What to Look for in Travel Nursing Agencies

When looking into travel nurse agencies you should first make sure that they provide the basics: free housing or a housing stipend, health and dental insurance, a retirement plan, travel reimbursement, 24-hour customer support, and a variety and abundance of travel nursing jobs all over the country.

Here are a few tips from my experience about the basics:

Travel Nurse Housing:

Do you want your agency to find housing for you, or do you want to take the housing stipend and search for housing yourself?

I personally found it much easier to have my agency set up my housing for me. This way I knew it was safe, furnished, close to where I was working, and paid for. If there were any problems, all I had to do was call my company and it would be handled.

Many people choose to find their own housing and take the housing stipend instead. There are pros and cons to this choice:

Pros To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • Your housing stipend depends on the city you live in, but oftentimes, it is more than the rent you end up paying. This is a good way to make some extra tax-free cash.
  • You can find exactly the type of housing you’re looking for at the price you’re willing to pay. You can rent just a room for yourself and pocket a lot of cash. Or rent an entire house if you’re bringing your family or pets along. If you’re traveling with fellow coworkers, you can find a bigger house to share that fits everyone.
  • You can choose where you live. Maybe you’re going to Seattle and you’d rather live downtown and commute to work than vs. living next to the hospital in the suburbs.
  • There are several websites and groups now to help you find housing
  • Once you’ve done it once, you understand how to find housing and can repeat the process in the next location.

Cons To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • It can be difficult to find short-term furnished housing.
  • Many landlords require a deposit, so you have to front that money before you get your first paycheck.
  • If you end up extending your contract, it’s not guaranteed that your landlord hasn’t rented out the place to someone else.
  • If you have never been to that city before, it can also be tough to determine whether a neighborhood is safe or not.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are traveling with a pet, it may make it difficult to find your own housing. Oftentimes, travel nurse agencies have housing already contracted that accepts pets.

There are pros and cons to using your a travel nurse agency’s contracted housing vs. finding your own housing. It just depends on how much time and effort you can put into the search and if you’re hoping to pocket any extra housing stipend cash.

Benefits for Travel Nurses:

  • The majority of travel nurse companies offer health and dental insurance.
  • Now that the Affordable Care Act is in place, it might be wise to research whether or not it would be more cost-effective for you to go with your agency’s healthcare plan or purchase one of your own through healthcare.org. The benefit of going through healthcare.org is that if you do plan on switching travel nurse agencies, you won’t have to change your insurance.
  • Some smaller travel nurse companies will give you a healthcare stipend if you don’t take their health insurance so you can purchase your own.
  • As far as retirement plans go, I decided to open up my own Roth IRA and not contribute to the 401K because I didn’t know how long I was going to be traveling.  With some companies you can contribute to your 401K from day 1 and with others you have to wait as long as 1 year.

Travel Nurse Reimbursements

When talking with your potential travel nurse agency, make sure you ask them what the reimbursement is for travel. “Travel” cost is considered the amount of money it takes you to get from your “tax home” to your travel assignment or from one assignment to the next. Often times this can be negotiated if there is a high need in one state that happens to be across the country.

I have found that the average reimbursement is $500.

They will pay you half on your first paycheck and the other half when you complete your assignment. You have the option of either driving or flying to your next destination. I personally drove to each of my assignments; I couldn’t imagine trying to fit all my belongings into suitcases and I love road trips.

Important Pay and Benefits Questions to Ask

Not all benefits or pay packages are created equal. It is important to find an agency that offers benefits, housing, and pay packages that are specific to your needs.

1. What destinations does your agency serve?

The whole point of travel nursing is to travel…right? So it is important to find a company that serves the city or cities you want to travel to. Some agencies claim they have contracts nationwide, however, that may not be the case.

If you know of a specific hospital that you would like to travel to because it looks good on your resume or a specific city you want to explore, then make sure your potential agency has a contract at that location. This is especially important if you want to travel to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.

Match with a travel company here.

2. How are your pay packages broken down?

Does the company tend to pay a higher base rate with lower non-taxable reimbursements or a lower base rate with higher non-taxable reimbursements?

Having a higher base rate may serve you better if you plan on taking company housing, plan on buying a house, or getting a loan in the near future. If you are someone who likes to find their own housing, then a higher housing stipend may be the way to go with a lower base rate.

3. What types of housing do you provide?

Most agencies offer a one-bedroom furnished apartment for your typical 13-week contract. This typically does not include dishes, linen, a washer and dryer, a T.V., or even a vacuum. If you don’t like lugging your belongings around with you all over the country or paying out of pocket to rent this stuff, then it may be wise to either ask if the agency provides any of these necessities at no cost or find your own housing.

If your contract is only eight weeks, then you could get stuck in an extended-stay hotel. I personally like to have nice housing, so I wanted a company that focused on providing comfortable and safe housing options. If you like to find your own housing then this may not apply to you.

4. What type of benefits do you offer?

Most agencies offer medical/dental benefits and a retirement package. If these benefits are important to you, then finding a company with good benefits is essential.

If you like to live on the edge with no health benefits and you brush and floss your teeth like a champ, then maybe you don’t care about benefits. If this is the case then you can ask the company if they are willing to pay you a higher base rate for not taking their benefits.

As far as retirement packages go, I found it easier to do my own Roth IRA on the side. This way, if I switched companies I didn’t have to worry about moving my money all over the place.

Click here to discover new high paying opportunities.

5. What types of extra work-related costs do you reimburse for?

Travel nurse companies can reimburse you for the following:

  • Licensing fees
  • CEU (Continuing Education) requirements
  • Certifications
  • Required immunizations

Some travel nurse agencies have a CEU database that is free for their employees. This helps cut costs in those states that require a certain number to maintain or acquire a new license.

These extra costs add up over time so it’s nice to know your agency is looking out for your pocketbook.

6. What are your missed and canceled shift policies?

A missed shift means you called in sick, and a canceled shift means they canceled you for low census. For the most part, the hospital determines how the travel nurse agency handles this, and it will be written in your contract.

This is important because in the travel nurse world if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And in some cases, you may have to reimburse your agency for housing costs.

There may be a clause written in your contract that allows you to “miss” a certain amount of shifts without being penalized. There will also be a clause that states how many shifts the hospital can cancel you. Usually, it’s once a pay period, and your agency shouldn’t require you to reimburse them for housing costs.

There are even some agencies that offer 100% guaranteed shifts meaning no matter what you will not get canceled.

Find travel assignments in your specialty here.

Other Questions To Ask a Travel Nurse Agency:

  • What is the travel reimbursement?
  • How much will health insurance cost me?
  • If I don’t take health insurance, do I get a healthcare stipend?
  • When can I start contributing to my 401K?
  • Are there bonuses for extending assignments?
  • How often do I get paid?
  • Does the company also contract per diem work?
  • Do they offer paid time off?
  • Are there any referral bonuses available?

Travel Nursing Companies – Their relationships with hospitals matter, Part 1

hospital travel company

It’s useful for travel nurses to be informed about hospital-agency relationships. Remember, a travel nursing company can only work with a hospital if it has a contract to do so . These contracts exist under several different arrangements. Each arrangement results in different outcomes for the hospital, the agency, and the travel nurse. There are essentially two relationship categories, Direct Relationships and Vendor Management Service relationships.

What is a Direct Relationship?

A Direct Relationship exists when the company has a contract directly with the hospital to provide staffing services and communication between the two parties is direct, without any intermediaries. Direct Relationships are the traditional/original type of relationship in healthcare staffing.

Find your next travel healthcare job on BluePipes!

Typically, hospitals that engage in direct relationships will work with a fairly large number of agencies depending on how much they utilize travelers and how difficult it is for the hospital to get their openings filled. There are some hospitals that work directly with over 100 different agencies. However, others are able to have their needs met by far fewer agencies and may work with less than 10. Hospitals typically have designated contact-people for their contracted agencies to communicate with. These contacts are typically staffing office representatives.

Are travel nursing agency direct relationships vendor neutral?

Hospitals may or may not have policies in place that govern how their representatives engage with agencies to handle the talent acquisition process. Those that do have policies in place are seeking to achieve what is commonly referred to as “vendor neutrality.” Vendor neutrality policies seek to ensure that all vendors (agencies) are treated equally in an effort to ensure that the hospital gets the best candidates as opposed to candidates only from favored agencies.

Free: Universal Job Application and Credential Management for travelers.

Typically, when vendor neutrality policies are in place, the hospital’s staffing office representatives will receive requests for travel nurses, otherwise known as orders or requisitions, from Unit Managers, Chief Nursing Officers, or someone in the finance department who has approved the order. The orders should then be released to all of the agencies that have a contract with the hospital. To accomplish this, the hospital typically sends out a mass email with the necessary details to all of the contracted agencies.

Typically, agencies receive only the most basic information such as License, Specialty, Shift, Start Date, and Contract Length. Specific details about the unit or qualifications sought will sometimes be included as well. So the agency may receive an email from Hospital X that says, “RN, PICU, 7p-7a, 4/18 Start, 13 weeks.”

Free eBook: How To Negotiate Travel Nursing Pay

Agencies will then survey their available travelers and reply with the submission profiles of any interested candidates. These submission profiles will be reviewed by the staffing office to ensure that the basic requirements are included. If the staffing office deems that all the basic requirements are met, then the submission profile will be forwarded to the Unit Manager, or someone designated in the unit, who will review the submission profile and decide whether or not to contact the travel nurse for an interview.

This scenario represents the way things should work with a direct relationship model when the hospital has vendor neutrality policies in place. It ensures that all agencies who are contracted with the facility receive a fair shot at submitting any candidates they might have. It also ensures that the hospital receives the largest possible selection of travel nurses, thereby increasing the chances that the hospital receives more highly qualified candidates from which to select. Despite these advantages, some hospitals choose not to institute vendor neutrality policies and sometimes their vendor neutrality policies are disobeyed.

Cronyism and travel nursing direct relationships

Sometimes, the staffing office representatives play favorites or enter into side agreements with agencies. For example, the hospital’s staffing office representative responsible for handling the jobs may develop a strong relationship with particular agencies, or worse, accept gifts or kickbacks from agencies in exchange for favorable treatment. Other times, agency representatives will somehow develop close personal relationships with Unit Managers, or other individuals who can trump the staffing office. In this case, the agency representative may be able to bypass the staffing office and learn of open jobs from the Unit Manager before the staffing office is made aware.

Tired of filling out skills checklists? They’re free on BluePipes.

I’ve experienced such cases even when the facility has vendor neutrality policies in place. For example, one facility I worked with had a very stringent vendor neutrality policy that went so far as to require that the submission profiles sent by agencies include absolutely no mention of the agency, whether in writing or logo form. They were aiming to ensure that people at the facility would not even know where the profile was from. The only person who could possibly know was the staffing office representative who originally received the profile, and that’s where the breakdown originated. It became well known that the representative developed a very close relationship with a single agency, and was forwarding all of that agency’s submission profiles to the hiring managers first, before sending any others. This ultimately resulted in one, pretty small agency having 18 to 20 travel nurses at the facility at one time.

In another instance, a county hospital I worked with had strict vendor neutrality policies, which most municipal facilities do. I was working with a travel nursing couple, he an OR nurse and she a Cath Lab nurse. They were also working with another agency, and we both submitted him to an open OR job at the county facility. He interviewed, was offered the job, and selected to work through us. We were told there were no Cath Lab openings, nor would there be any time soon.

Discover why travel nurses are calling us their “secret weapon”.

Then, the other agency called the couple and told them they had secured her a position in the Cath Lab, and could land both jobs if they both agreed to work with the other agency. We called our contact in the staffing office who knew nothing of the Cath Lab job. The other agency had clearly bypassed the staffing office, perhaps directly to the hiring manager, and the couple was forced to go with the other agency to ensure that they were able to lock down contracts at the same hospital.

Considerations for travel nurses

What does this all mean for the travel nurse? Well, there are a few important things to take away from all of this. First, if the hospital works with many agencies, and things are working like they should, it’s possible that landing a job will be quite competitive. The open jobs will be released to many agencies, and the facility may immediately receive a large number of submission profiles. I’ve seen open jobs filled in less than an hour. I’ve also seen emails from hospital staff indicating that they had received 50 or more submission profiles in less than hour. However, this is just the name of the game in today’s market.

Create your free Travel Healthcare Resume on BluePipes!

Second, if the hospital engages in direct relationships with relatively few agencies, then you’ll stand a much better chance at getting an interview. The hospital will still receive many candidates, but there will be fewer candidates to compete against. Additionally, there is a good chance that the few agencies who are working with the hospital have developed a strong working relationship with the key players at the hospital. This will result in the agency having more information about the hospital, the unit, and the travel  nursing job overall.

Finally, if the hospital is working with many agencies, but is giving preferential treatment to a few agencies, you’ll have a difficult time navigating the system unless you happen to be working with an agency that is receiving preferential treatment. If you’re working with an agency that is not receiving preferential treatment, you’ll have a very difficult time landing a job at that hospital. Your agency may not even receive word that an opening exists, and even if they do, your submission profile may be passed over in favor of others from preferred agencies.

In reference to the or nurse and cath lab team boils down to better account management by your competitor.

why should those nurses choose your company when you did not earn the business?

Thanks for the comment, Nadine! I think the question insinuates that the only way for an agency to earn a traveler’s business is by being able to land them a job. I agree that’s one aspect of service. After all, the title of the article is, “Travel Nursing Companies – Their Relationships With Hospitals Matter”.

However, nurses care about much more than that, wouldn’t you agree? Either way, we receive tons of inquiries from nurses indicating that they do care about much more than just being able to land jobs. They often ask if there is any way that they can work with a company they feel has superior service instead of a company who has inferior service but is able to land them jobs.

We chose to describe the specific instance with the OR and Cath Lab nurses because it illustrates that agency relationships with hospitals can have an impact on travelers even when hospitals maintain “vendor neutrality” policies. Often times, this means travelers are forced to make a choice between an agency they prefer to work with and an agency that can simply land them the job. This is just part of the business. Agencies have varying strengths and weaknesses and ultimately travelers need to make the best choice for themselves.

When Your Boss Is Your Landlord

A Brooklyn hospital is trying to evict employees and retirees from staff housing, as it struggles financially, but tenants fear they will now be homeless in an unaffordable city.

A man and woman sit on a couch with serious looks, red decorations are on the walls behind them.

By Anna Kodé

A five-minute walk to work and around $600 a month in rent was hard to pass up in 1990.

Rodolfo Calica worked as a parking attendant at Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park, Brooklyn. His wife, Queenie Calica, also began working there in the 2000s as a housekeeper.

It made sense to them to move into one of the nearby buildings that Maimonides bought in the 1980s to serve as housing for its employees. They both continued to live there after they retired in 2021, and over the years they made the two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment their own, filling it with family photos, Lunar New Year decorations and a flag of the Philippines, where they’re from.

Now, after spending more than 30 years in the home, the Calicas are facing eviction. “We worked through the pandemic. And now they want us out,” said Mr. Calica, 66. “There are so many nurses here, too. They are heroes, but they’re going to be homeless now.”

Maimonides sold the property six years ago, along with seven other buildings it owned in the area, for over $65 million to Iris Holdings. Following the sale, many tenants left, but some longtime tenants who are hospital employees or retirees continued to pay rent to the hospital, which paid that money forward to the new owner, essentially subletting.

For many of the tenants — who have lived in these buildings for decades and are older people with low to modest incomes — finding another apartment in the current rental market is a grueling and sometimes impossible task. In September 2021, the last time that Maimonides accepted a payment from the Calicas, according to the couple, the rent was $1,100 a month. The median rent in New York was nearly $3,500 last month, over $1,450 higher than the national median, according to Zillow.

Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn’s largest independent hospital, has also been struggling financially. In 2022, the hospital had over $65 million in losses and over $165 million the year before.

In an emailed response, Sam Miller, the vice president of marketing and communications for Maimonides, wrote that the hospital did not plan to sell the buildings “when we purchased them, but our financial situation changed.”

Across the properties the hospital sold, and in four other buildings it still owns, encompassing over 500 units, Maimonides has started eviction cases against more than 50 tenants. Many of the residents formed a union and are working with the Fifth Avenue Committee, a community development nonprofit, and the Legal Aid Society, a nonprofit legal services organization, to fight the eviction cases. In March, more than a dozen tenants traveled to Albany to urge legislators to intervene and to pass a bill prohibiting eviction without good cause .

So far, they have had some relief. After a judge decided that 21 tenants, including the Calicas, would have until March 31 “to vacate with dignity,” the New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, called for a temporary stay on all evictions. Ms. James held a meeting with Iris Holdings and Maimonides to discuss a way for the tenants “to remain in their homes or obtain other affordable, stable housing.” Last week, Maimonides decided to pause evictions until June. On Friday, tenants, State Assembly members Marcela Mitaynes and Phara Souffrant Forrest and State Senator Julia Salazar held a news conference to call on Maimonides to drop the eviction cases.

‘Safety Net’

It’s not uncommon for employers to provide or subsidize housing for their employees , especially in regions where home prices and rental rates can be out of reach for their workers. But what happens to the tenants when the employer finds that it’s no longer financially viable to be a landlord?

Mr. Miller said that Maimonides first purchased the buildings “as strategic investments. Housing was always intended to assist employees.”

As a “safety net hospital,” Maimonides serves more Medicaid recipients than some other New York hospitals. “We get paid far less to provide care than hospitals that serve fewer Medicaid recipients and more patients with private insurance,” Mr. Miller said.

The multimillion-dollar 2018 sale was intended “to raise revenue to support our core mission, which is to provide high-quality care to the most diverse population in Brooklyn, regardless of people’s insurance status or ability to pay,” Mr. Miller said.

Following the building’s sale, the Calicas said their rent went up to $1,100 from $750. But conditions went down, the couple said, a common complaint among other tenants who say their apartments began to fall into disrepair.

At the Calicas’ these days, a space heater sits in the living room — the heat hasn’t been functioning properly since 2021, they said. There’s also a leak in their kitchen, destroying the ceiling. “I always stumble near the bucket — I don’t want to fall down. I’m old, you know?” said Ms. Calica, 66. A super has come to help with issues in the past, but lately has been unresponsive, the Calicas said.

Conrad Ramkissoon, who has lived in Maimonides housing since 2003, said he hasn’t been able to reach anyone to address the many issues with his one-bedroom apartment since the 2018 sale. Mr. Ramkissoon, 51, is one of many tenants allowed to stay in their units long after the end of their employment. In 2010, when he was a nurse working in the psychiatric unit, a patient attacked him, resulting in severe injuries that left him unable to work; the following year, the hospital terminated his employment while he was on leave.

“The shower has been leaking for more than a year,” he said. “The kitchen sink — hot water and cold water are not working.” Last year, Maimonides filed an eviction case against Mr. Ramkissoon.

The Master Lease

Under a master lease reviewed by The Times, Maimonides is a tenant of Iris, the new owners. The document outlined the terms of how Maimonides would be responsible for repairs for the interiors of tenants’ units.

Mr. Miller said Maimonides has been responsive to tenants’ requests for repairs and has been “spending close to another $1 million per year on maintenance and other costs associated with being a landlord.”

Some tenants believe the poor maintenance was part of a tactic to push them out devised long before the efforts to evict them began in the past few years.

Mr. Miller said that since 2018, the new owner raised rents, but the Maimonides-associated tenants didn’t have to pay the increases. “Maimonides paid these increases, even in cases where the tenant failed to pay any rent. These rent subsidies amount to more than $1 million annually,” Mr. Miller said. But several tenants said they paid higher rents following the sale.

Legal Aid lawyers say they are wary of the hospital’s statements of its benevolence.

The tenants never had leases; they had housing agreements. The agreements, reviewed by The Times, granted employees permission to live in a specified unit and outlined a monthly rent and security deposit amount. The documents stated that tenants would have to vacate the apartment “upon 30 days notice” or at any time their “employment at Maimonides Medical Center terminates, no matter for what cause.” The agreements also said that tenants are “permitted to live in the apartment on a temporary basis with the condition that the Medical Center has every right to withdraw such permission at any time.”

Until as recently as this January, Maimonides collected rent from hospital-connected tenants, according to Meghan Walsh, a lawyer at Legal Aid. As the eviction cases against tenants began, it stopped collecting rent payments.

But many tenants are ready and willing to pay rent, said Ms. Walsh. “Some have gone directly to the hospital and offered to pay increases if they could stay. Maimonides has refused.”

Ms. Walsh believes the circuitous subletting agreement was put in place to bypass rent regulation.

The buildings are rent-stabilized, but because Maimonides is a nonprofit organization, it was exempt from giving its tenants rent-stabilized leases. “There’s an exemption in the rent stabilization code that allows for nonprofits to mark units as exempt, even if they’re rent stabilized, as long as the nonprofit is using the units to further their nonprofit interests,” said Ms. Walsh.

So Maimonides collecting rent from tenants and paying that forward to Iris — rather than the tenants paying rent to Iris directly — Ms. Walsh believes, is a “way for the current owner to be able to skirt the rent stabilization code and charge more for these units.”

In 2021, five of the buildings Iris had purchased were transferred to Park Affordable, an affordable housing subsidiary of Iris Holdings. On its website, Park Affordable advertises renovated units in the buildings as “modern luxury” and “classic elegance” and states that it’s offering rent-stabilized leases. Listed rents range from $2,286 for a one-bedroom and $3,510 for a three-bedroom apartment.

A regulatory agreement between Park Affordable and the city outlined that a part of these units would serve as affordable housing and would house people coming from the city’s shelter system; in turn, Park Affordable would receive tax benefits.

In an email statement, William Miller, a spokesperson for Iris, said that the developer is hoping to find a solution “that provides long-term affordable housing” for the Maimonides tenants. “We have been working diligently with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Legal Aid, along with other city and state officials to broker a resolution between Maimonides and the remaining employee households,” he said.

The Fight for Good Cause

Tenants and advocates have been calling on lawmakers to pass the Good Cause Eviction bill, which was first introduced in New York’s state legislature in 2019 and is currently in committee.

The Good Cause bill would require landlords to have a “good reason” to evict a tenant — which can include nonpayment of rent, breach of lease, creating a nuisance, property damage and if the landlord wants to move into the apartment and use it as their own primary residence, said Ellen Davidson, a staff attorney with Legal Aid’s Civil Law Reform Unit. It also includes a mechanism to ensure that rent increases are reasonable and a way for landlords to demonstrate financial necessity for higher rent increases.

If the bill passed, it could help some of the Maimonides tenants, Ms. Davidson said.

‘We Are All Afraid’

For the tenants involved in proceedings now, the desperation to find housing is colliding with processing the intense emotions that come with having to leave a home.

Carmen Ramos-Perez, 68, was an administrative assistant for Maimonides from 2000 to 2021, when she retired. In 2003, she moved into an apartment in a building owned by Maimonides, and in 2022, a representative from the hospital first asked her to move out, she said. Ms. Ramos-Perez lives in one of the four buildings that are still under Maimonides ownership. Legal Aid said that Maimonides is hoping to turn two of these buildings into parking.

“I’m from Puerto Rico. I was born and raised there, and my dream has always been to go back home,” she said. So after being asked to vacate, Ms. Ramos-Perez visited Puerto Rico to see if she could live there comfortably. But medical complications from a past stroke arose, and she wasn’t able to get the proper medical care she needed there.

When she returned to Brooklyn, Ms. Ramos-Perez toured several apartments in search of a new home, but she couldn’t afford them. “I can’t sleep at night, because I’ve been so anxious looking for an apartment,” Ms. Ramos-Perez said.

In June, she finally found a one-bedroom that she could afford. Before she could move in, the landlord asked for a letter of reference from Ms. Ramos-Perez’s current landlord. Ms. Ramos-Perez said that a Maimonides representative told her that they couldn’t provide a letter for her because her case was already in court, and as a result, Ms. Ramos-Perez wasn’t able to secure the new apartment.

“We are all afraid because of the situation,” said Ms. Ramos-Perez, in tears. “Most of us — we’re retirees, we’re sick.”

HPD arrests man accused of Love's Travel Stop parking lot killing allegedly caused by 1 punch swing

KTRK logo

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police put a 43-year-old man in handcuffs this week, nine months after they said he threw the punch that took a 59-year-old man's life last summer.

A Houston Police Department Crime Suppression Team took Maximiliano Gamez into custody on Tuesday on a count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

According to HPD, its homicide division detectives believe Gamez got into it with Andres Marroquin on June 26, 2023, in the Love's Travel Stop on North McCarty Street in the city's Pleasantville Area.

Police initially said that Marroquin was in a vehicle that was backing out of a parking space that afternoon when Gamez, in a blue truck, pulled behind and blocked the victim in.

Marroquin exited his vehicle and exchanged words with Gamez, who allegedly punched him in the head and drove off, police said.

Marroquin fell to the ground and suffered head trauma so severe that he spent four months at Ben Taub Hospital before he was pronounced dead on Nov. 1, 2023, according to HPD.

An HPD news release sent Wednesday didn't elaborate on how detectives identified Gamez as their suspect.

Court paperwork revealed Gamez had prior convictions, including an August 1996 aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon count and a felon in possession of a weapon charge almost 12 years later.

Gamez was due in court on Thursday.

Hospital CFO Fired After Complaining About Comedian to Get Trial

By Patrick Dorrian

Patrick Dorrian

A Pennsylvania hospital will face trial on whether it fired its chief financial officer in retaliation for complaining that a comedian who performed at a company retreat disparaged Black people.

Grand View Health Foundation LLC’s argument that “a single performance by an outside comedian” can’t constitute protected activity under 42 U.S.C. §1981 failed because one instance of workplace harassment can be illegal under federal civil rights law, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said Tuesday. Evidence would support a jury finding that the former CFO reasonably believed she was complaining about a racially hostile work environment, ...

Why a major Miami cruise company has canceled over a dozen international trips for 2025

M iami-based Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled at least 14 cruises on 7 ships in 2025 as a booming industry confronts global conflict and other issues.

The cancellations include trips in May and September on Norwegian Viva, the company’s newest ship, and ones in April through June on Norwegian Sky, which frequently sails from PortMiami.

Norwegian said customers who are affected will get a full refund and a 10% discount on future sailings through Dec. 31, 2025.

In a statement, the company said that the cancellations “are a result of varied events, including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas.”

Suspended trips include the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 24, 2025. That ship often departs from Port Canaveral.

Norwegian remains optimistic about cruising. This week, the company ordered eight new ships, its largest ever single purchase, a milestone celebrated at Seatrade Cruise Global, a four-day annual industry conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. They will be delivered between 2026 and 2036.

Since the terror group Hamas attacked Israel and the Gaza war started in October, cruise companies have been canceling trips to the Middle East.

Next year’s cruise cancellations affect passengers of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Sky, and Norwegian Viva.

A March 28 letter to passengers said: “We have been monitoring the situation in Israel, and despite our best hopes that it would de-escalate, we have made the decision to alter published itineraries that transit through and around the region.”

For Epic, the decision was made “in order to reroute her and accommodate the early start to her Caribbean cruise season.”

The Sky will be rerouted around Africa and deployed to Eastern, Western, and Southern Africa, a letter to those passengers said.

Viva is being sent to the Mediterranean, passengers were told in a letter.

Despite any security risks, major airlines including United and Delta have said they will resume flights to Israel. Next week, El Al resumes non-stop service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Tel Aviv twice a week. The Israeli airline continues to offer five flights a week from Miami International Airport.

Norwegian in its statement said the cruise company remains committed to taking its guests to “some of the most sought-out destinations around the world.” But sometimes, itineraries need to be modified to “accommodate certain circumstances.”

Other reasons for the cruise changes

But security in the Middle East isn’t the only reason for the changes.

The Norwegian Star canceled because of a “full ship charter.” That means a private organization offered to rent out the whole ship for an entire trip.

The Norwegian Spirit underwent a planned renovation in less time than anticipated, and so now wants to use that time for a longer trip. “As the renovation period will be complete prior to schedule, we now have the opportunity to enhance the originally scheduled January 21, 2025 itinerary, and offer a longer and more immersive experience,” it told guests in a letter.

Meanwhile the canceled sailings on the Norwegian Jade from Feb. 20 through March 25 is “part of a fleet redeployment to accommodate strong demand for cruises through the Panama Canal and to the Bahamas,” the company wrote in a letter to passengers.

Cruise cancellations list

Here is a full list of cruises canceled by Norwegian is listed here, provided by the company:
