Everything You Need to Know About Traveling to See the Olympics

Attending the Olympic Games can be both thrilling and challenging, with all of the usual travel logistics ratcheted up to an Olympic level. Here are the essential Olympic travel guidelines and tips you need to know when planning your trip.

Note that most of the following tips apply to both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which tend to occur about two weeks apart. The two-week break makes it very tough to attend both, but the Paralympic Games are just as exciting and inspiring, so they’re worth consideration in and of themselves.

Getting Tickets to the Olympics

Competitive swimmers in the middle of a race

Buying tickets for the Olympics will look slightly different this year than in the past. Previously, event presales were handled by a single vendor depending on where you live — for example, in the United States, ticketing was handled by CoSport . For the 2024 Games, tickets are only available through the official ticketing website of the Paris Olympics . Tickets for Paralympic events are available through the same portal beginning October 9th .

Event tickets tend to be released in waves. The first round of tickets for the Paris Olympics went on sale via a lottery system in March, followed by a second wave in May. As of July 5th, the remaining tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

When choosing events, I have found this strategy to work well: First get something you really care about, and then choose something that seems interesting but you know very little about. For example, at one recent Olympic Games my family went to a tae kwon do event when our son was involved in the sport, and we even saw his teacher there working as a judge. The next day we went to mountain biking, which was wild and very cool, with attendees all running around the fields that connected one obstacle to the next.

Tickets to many events may officially sell out up to a year in advance but are often still available through package deals. A visit to the vendor’s website will tell you a lot about what is on offer.

Figure Out Your Lodging Next

Lodging is likely to be your biggest challenge and is the trip component you should research and lock down first. You can use your favorite search engines to get started, comparing your options to the venues you hope to attend. The venues are set years in advance, so you can start searching fairly early on. Brace yourself, as there is quite a bit of speculative pricing that can go on, and availability can be hard to come by; in fact, one 2020 Olympic hopeful I know booked their entire family into double rooms at a Tokyo “love hotel,” yikes.

The official Olympics ticketing site also offers all-inclusive travel packages that include a certain number of nights’ lodging with a certain number of event tickets—but those tend to be somewhat pricey compared to DIY lodging options. That said, purchasing from the official outlet does tend to ensure some level of quality as well as a centralized location, so it is always worth a look.

Vacation Rentals vs Hotels: Which is the Better Choice?

Finding Olympic Flights

Many Olympic host cities have more than one airport, and it is worth your while to research airfares to all of them. For the Paris Olympics in 2024, for example, you can choose between Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly, and Beauvais–Tillé Airport.

Paris-Orly is smaller than Charles de Gaulle, but is less busy and located within easy reach of the southern side of the city. Charles de Gaulle offers more flight options from a wider range of destinations and is located to the north. For those flying budget , Beauvais–Tillé Airport may be your best bet.

Weather, Transport, and Getting to Venues

You’ll want to prepare for extreme weather no matter which Olympics you’re attending—pack plenty of warm layers for the winter Games, and prepare for heat if you’re attending a summer event.

Transport to venues varies tremendously depending on the host city and the location of a given venue. As you get farther from the main venues, transport connections can become more tricky. Strong public transportation in past Olympic cities such as Tokyo and London has been essential. Rio was a different story, but taxis were so affordable that they were actually a preferable option in many cases (just be careful to use sanctioned taxi services).

It almost goes without saying that you should give yourself some extra time whenever you are headed to a competition; if you miss a bus, end up on a long security line, need some time to find the correct entrance, or can’t quite figure out where you are supposed to go, you could miss the most dramatic moments of the competition.

You should also be prepared to walk a bit; entrances may not be right in front of transportation spots, security might be purposely far from the competition area, and the venue itself may be spread out.

Find the Free Events

Starting line of a professional race track

Even before you start attending competitions, every Olympic host city has some kind of massive public space for exhibitors and sponsors to put on shows, display wares, and more. These are often (although not always) right outside the main Olympic Stadium and have the host mascots running around, interactive games and exhibits, giant jumbotrons showing live events and highlights, and the like. These are worth seeing just to get the overall vibe of the Games, to people-watch, and to pick up (often free) souvenirs. This year, guests can even watch the opening ceremony ticket-free on the upper quays of the Seine.

Additionally, at every Olympics there are a number of events that take place in semi-public places, allowing you to see significant parts of the event at no cost whatsoever.

These are usually distance events of some kind in which the venue is huge and can’t be entirely closed off, or even runs through the streets and public spaces of the host city. These typically include the following:

  • Road cycling
  • Rowing, canoeing, and kayaking

I’d also throw in surfing; 2021 was the first year of surfing at the Games, so there is little history of how it is set up, but it seems like a candidate for being able to watch from near the event.

Then there are venues that back up to public spaces. In Rio, rowing was one of these; the lake on which the event took place was right in the middle of Ipanema, and you could see athletes competing from all over the place. The finish line was right next to a small skateboarding spot, and the crews headed right toward the kids skating there, while the start line was against the ring road around the lake at a spot where a small playground and picnic area remained open throughout the Games. The starting tower was surrounded by picnickers, and the local spectators were perhaps 50 to 80 meters from the athletes at the starting line.

These can be a bit tricky to figure out—for example, in London, you could not see rowing at all because the venue was surrounded by a huge moat that prevented anyone but ticket holders from getting anywhere near the course—but if you survey the venues and racecourses, you can usually figure out where you might hang out to see the athletes zoom past.

The Ultimate Europe Summer Packing List

Consider Heading Home Early or Late

I have found that folks trickle into the Olympic host city over time, but everyone leaves over the same day or two. Leaving the day before the closing ceremonies, or staying on a few days afterward, can often help avoid the stampede as well as keep airfare prices down a bit.

More Olympic Travel Tips

Don’t overpack.

Travel light to each event. The biggest slowdown you will encounter will almost always be bag check lines when entering (this is a rule at almost all large events these days). If you can avoid backpacks and bags, you can save time and aggravation.

Explore the City

Add in some “regular” tourism. Most host cities are exceptional destinations with or without the Games, and can be even better during the Olympics when even the non-sports attractions will get caught up in Olympic fever and put their best foot forward. Definitely visit some non-Olympic events to get a feel for the host city and country while you are there.

How to Spend a Long Weekend in Paris

Get Official Info

For details on transportation, venue locations, things to do and see, and more, the official site of the Local Organizing Committee is the place to start. Here are the sites for the next few Olympic Games: Paris 2024 , Milan Cortina 2026 , and Los Angeles 2028 . For safety tips, you might also want to check the State Department’s country information and travel advisories .

Get Into the Spirit

The volunteers at most Olympics really bring it when they are out interacting with all of us visiting the Games, and the overall vibe on the ground can be exhilarating. Give yourself over to the whole thing and you can be a true part of the Olympic spirit.

What You Need to Know About Booking 2024 Official Olympic Travel Packages

Paris Olympics Rings in front of Eiffel Tower

The Paris 2024 Olympics are now less than a year away, with opening ceremonies next July 24, and the games continuing to Aug. 11. Individual tickets for many events are already sold out, and lodging is becoming tight. But it’s still possible for travel advisors (and individuals) to book travel packages to the Olympics including tickets, hotels, and local experiences by working with On Location , the official hospitality provider for the Olympic Games.

Olympics Packages from On Location On Location is the sole company officially licensed to sell event tickets and event hospitality packages to the public. The ground-only packages are offered in three areas:  Tickets plus On-site Hospitality (think luxury boxes with champagne); In-the-City Hospitality (event tickets plus access to their central Paris Club House event and hospitality center); and Travel Packages, which can include lodging, transportation, and tours along with event tickets.

“Our role is to turn your Olympic dream into a reality,” said Will Whiston, executive vice president of Olympics at On Location. “We take the concern out of travel to the Olympics, simplifying it and helping customers navigate the entire process from booking a room to getting to the event venues.”

Some bookable over-the-top experiences via On Location include an Eiffel Tower luxury suite from which guests can watch beach volleyball on the courts below, and Opening Ceremony tickets at a French bistro-style venue built on a bridge overlooking the Seine River, where a parade of boats will carry national delegations below as guests sip champagne and nibble hors d’oeuvres.

On Location offers standard packages as well, with lodging at three-star hotels, and tickets to non-marquee events where prices are more reasonable than the premium showcases. Travel advisors should be aware that Olympic events will also be taking place outside of Paris. On Location also offers packages at Marseille for the sailing events and at Lille for the basketball tournament where U.S. fans will want to watch their favorite NBA stars battle global competition. Equestrian events taking place on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles are currently sold out, but might be expanding.

For both premium and standard Olympic hospitality packages “what we’re seeing in terms of interest is pretty wild,” said Whiston. He said availability is still there, but “you need to jump on it now” to secure your events and experiences of choice.

Current availability While individual event tickets are already almost completely sold out, On Location still has access to all the prime events popular with American fans, including Track & Field, Gymnastics, Swimming, and Basketball. Advisors can purchase Team U.S.A-focused packages to watch events and sports with their favorite athletes. Marquee events are still available, including luxury boxes to see the finals of the Men’s 100 Meters and other races. But the experience doesn’t come cheaply — a Silver Athletics in-venue hospitality package begins at about $5300 per person for a day.

Lodging is also a challenge for individuals seeking to visit Paris during the Olympics. “Hotels are harder to come by than tickets right now,” said On Location executive vice president of experiences, Brian Wilder. Many hotels are already charging “exorbitant rates” with some requiring two-week-long minimum bookings, according to Wilder. For the benefit of its customers, On Location has pre-negotiated room blocks and room rates, enabling visitors to book shorter minimum stays at reasonable costs. To set client expectations, Wilder says “Paris has an abundance of four-star hotels, but not as large a range of options for five-star and three-star properties” close to the event venues.

On Location does not book air travel to Paris, but according to Whiston “getting a flight to France isn’t the hard part right now,” as many tickets are just starting to be released for booking by airlines, with availability still high and prices still as reasonable as they ever are for European travel. For example, discount carrier French Bee still has $320 one-way fares between New York and Paris (Orly airport) during the Olympics, although advisors should “anticipate higher pricing due to demand” in the months ahead, according to French bee U.S. director of sales Thomas Renault. Iceland Air also currently offering decent fares between the U.S. and Paris next summer, albeit with a stopover in Iceland.

Travel advisor benefits with On Location On Location’s staff includes a dedicated resource to support travel advisors. The company is also in the process of developing a travel advisor portal for agents to register and access information and booking of travel packages. The portal is expected to go online in mid-October.

Travel advisors can reach out for information and advice directly to On Location at: [email protected] , or go directly to the website to explore client options. For advisors booking trips for handicapped or mobility-restricted clients, On Location offers an ADA request form, and a staffer focused on processing those requests.

Commissions for travel advisors working with On Location range from 6% to 10% depending on the style and level of the package booked.

The company is advising consumers to book as soon as possible to attend this once-in-a-lifetime event.

11 Things You Need To Know About Traveling To The Olympics

Olympics sign over road

Whether during their ancient run in 776 B.C. to 393 A.D. or since their modern revival in 1896, the Olympic Games have always drawn crowds from near and far. Today, thousands of athletes from hundreds of countries participate, and millions of people attend the Olympic and Paralympic Games as spectators. According to Paris 2024  — the official ticketing website of the 2024 Olympics held in Paris, France — nearly 10 million tickets are "set to go on sale." But despite the Games' popularity, being able to attend a competition can be surprisingly complicated.

Witnessing amazing physical exploits and being a part of the cheering Olympic crowd in person is an unforgettable experience; traveling to the place where the Games are held can be, as well. But enjoying both to the fullest takes preparation, planning, and several major advance purchases. In a sense, you could say Olympic travel is a bit like being an Olympic or Paralympic athlete — you'll have to think ahead, call on a lot of different skills, and go for the Gold (in this case, the trip of a lifetime). There are some essential things you'll need to know about traveling to the Olympics, but with some preparation, you'll be well on your way to victory.

Choose your events wisely

In most modern-day Olympic and Paralympic Games, it's more or less impossible to attend every event. The  Paris 2024 website  notes, for example, that the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will feature 32 sports and 329 events, and the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games will feature 22 sports and 549 events. This can make choosing difficult!

If you're feeling overwhelmed after looking at the list of sports at the Olympics and Paralympics, here's a suggestion that might help: Many experienced Olympic travelers advise purchasing tickets for a mix of sports you like and sports you've never seen before. Recent Games have given attendants lots of opportunities to do the latter. Several new sports have been added or will be added to the Olympics, including surfing, skateboarding, and breakdancing. Badminton and taekwondo were added to the Paralympics' roster of sports in 2021. And who knows what sports and events will be included in the years to come?

But despite this sense of possibility, keep in mind that no matter which events you choose, you may not be able to attend all of them. Factors like cost, event location, and ticket availability are essential to consider when it comes to Olympic travel.

Know where events are taking place

Olympic events aren't all held in the same spot — or even in the same city. For instance, for the 2024 Paris Olympics, some events will take place in Versailles. That isn't too far from Paris, but other events will take place in totally different parts of France, including the cities of Bordeaux and Marseille — not to mention the French Polynesian territory of Tahiti!

Even if you're planning to attend events only in an Olympic city itself, it's important to be aware of how far those are from each other if you want to see multiple events on a given day. If an official Olympic and Paralympic venue map is available, it's a good place to start. A resource like Google Maps can also give an estimated travel route and time. Keep in mind that during the Games, things will be more crowded than usual, so be sure to build in some extra time.

Also, be sure to factor in time for lines, security checks, and other things that might take time at the venue. For instance, the 2024 Paris Games' official site recommends arriving an hour and a half before an event is set to start. You'll also want to make sure you know how far the event location is from where you're staying. And, of course, if possible, try to choose accommodations close to the event(s) you're attending.

Buy tickets far in advance

Olympics and Paralympics tickets can go on sale a year or two before the Games are scheduled, and if you want to attend, you'll have to plan far ahead since some events sell out almost immediately.

Olympic travel expert Ken Hanscom wrote in an  article on Medium that ticket buying "can be the most challenging and frustrating part" about planning a trip to the Games. For one thing, how to buy tickets for the Olympics has changed over the years. Buying tickets for the 2024 Paris Olympics, for example, began as a lottery, with ticket buyers essentially signing up for a chance to attend an event before hopefully receiving confirmation that their bid "won" and they could purchase tickets. When the lottery is over, all remaining tickets can simply be purchased online.

But even if you're lucky enough to snag some of the limited number of tickets for the Olympics and the usually even fewer available for the Paralympics, keep in mind that some events simply might not happen. For instance, your country's basketball team might not make it to the finals, so you'll have to watch two other teams instead. Another exception — this time a good one — is that some events are free or can be watched for free from a distance. These are usually ones that cover a large area (marathons, bike races, etc.) or some exceptional events or celebrations.

Book flights and accommodations far in advance, too

Whether the Games are being held in a destination that's typically crowded or a bit off the beaten path, it will be crowded during the Olympics and Paralympics. That's why it's a good idea — maybe even essential — to book your transportation and accommodations as soon as you know which events you're going to attend. If you need to take (a) flight(s) to get to your destination, most major airlines allow you to buy tickets around 330 days before your departure date. When it comes to the Olympics, most experts advise booking your flights as soon as that window opens in order to avoid price hikes (a very common side effect of Olympic travel) or limited options.

Finding a place to stay might be more complicated than you'd expect, with some hotels entirely booked by the International Olympic Committee far in advance. Add to this the fact that the Games often take place during the height of tourist season. With this in mind, try to reserve accommodations as early as you can. Luckily, some hotels and rentals allow bookings more than a year in advance. If you aren't able to book the flight or accommodation you expected, remember to stay flexible. For instance, consider flying into a different but nearby airport and taking ground transportation from there to your destination.

Be sure your travel documents are up to date

Of course, all this advance planning will be worthless if you end up not being able to travel! Check which documents are necessary for your destination. You can do this with an online search or by visiting the official website of a country's consulate or embassy. As a general rule, international travelers will need a passport and possibly also a visa, depending on local laws. You may also have to fill out and pay for a pass like ESTA (for international travelers to the U.S.) or, as of 2025, the ETIAS (for non-EU members traveling to certain European countries).

Keep in mind that, depending on the destination, even if your passport will be valid during the Games, it may need to be valid for a few months beyond that point, as well. Be sure to verify your country's passport requirements online. If you're planning to drive to your destination, make sure you have proper and up-to-date documentation for that, as well. You may also want to build in time to research travel insurance or see if you're already covered.

Some destinations may also have health requirements. These could include a certificate of vaccination (COVID-19, malaria, etc.) or a test taken before departure or upon arrival. As we all know from recent years, because some health restrictions and situations can change, keep checking these requirements on the destination country's official website. Note that travelers from different destinations may have different requirements.

Make sure what you're bringing works ... and is legal

Nowadays, having a working phone with you seems like a "must" for many travel situations. The Olympics and Paralympics fall under that category. For one thing, as of the 2024 Summer Games, all tickets are electronic, so at the very least, you'll need to be sure they're downloaded and your phone is charged so that you can show them at the venue. Many airlines, train companies, and anywhere else you've made a reservation may also send you alerts if there's a cancellation or delay.

So make sure that your phone charger is compatible with local plugs and voltage — and be sure to do this for any other electronics you plan on bringing, as well. Look for a plan or carrier that works in your destination. Some phone plans have an international option you can activate, so that might be a good place to start. If all else fails, find out where you can purchase an inexpensive phone or SIM card at your destination.

Some things you're planning to bring may not be legal in your destination; be sure to look up local laws before you go. You can usually find this information by doing a web search for "forbidden items in" followed by your destination country. You might be thinking this is an unnecessary step, but some laws can be surprising. Obviously, most hardcore drugs are illegal just about anywhere, but certain countries may also ban things like CBD products, alcohol, electronic cigarettes, and even Kinder Surprise Eggs.

Know what to expect

If you're able to attend the Olympic or Paralympic Games, knowing what to expect from your destination can make a big difference in your overall experience. One of the most important things is to be aware of what accommodations will be like. Before you book accommodations, be aware of what the standard is for your destination. Sometimes, even things you might take for granted — like free Wi-Fi or potable water — might not be the norm.

For instance, even though Paris has experienced record-breaking high temperatures in recent years, most accommodations, especially apartment rentals, don't have air conditioning. So, if AC is crucial for you, be sure to check if it's included before you book. Also, know that if you're expecting to stay at a particular hotel, you may not get your wish. Ken Hanscom warns that in addition to increased bookings during the Games, the International Olympic Committee and other organizations often reserve entire hotels up to "10 years in advance."

Take some time to learn about what your destination will be like outside your hotel or rental. Try to get familiar with common customs, including how to be polite to locals, before you go. It will likely also be helpful to learn to say a few basic words and phrases like "Hello," "Goodbye," "Please," "Thank you," "How much?" and "Toilets" in the local language. Take time, too, to learn a bit about what food will be available, especially if you have dietary restrictions.

Plan to get the most out of your destination

Even if the purpose of your trip is to attend the Games, it's a good idea to get to know your destination. In addition to knowing what to expect in terms of accommodations and food options, learning about where you're headed can be a way to have an even more amazing experience. You may find yourself with some downtime between events, so find out how safe it is to walk around and which neighborhoods you might like to visit.

If you have a lot of unscheduled time, consider taking in some non-Olympic draws of the place you're in. Check out a museum, take a tour, delve into one of your interests, see a performance, or opt for something offbeat or less well-known. Remember that some attractions may require making a reservation in advance. Sure, all of this does mean more planning, and after everything you've done already, that may feel unpleasant. But it will be worth it!

Researching budget options for things like food (including grocery stores!), entertainment, and local transportation is also a good idea. After all, between tickets, accommodations, and transportation, your Olympics trip is likely to be on the pricey side. With a little research, you can learn how to eat, explore, and have fun in your destination on the cheap — or, in some cases, even for free.

Watch out for scams

It's a sad truth of modern life that scams can happen to just about anyone, just about anywhere. So, it should come as no surprise that there will be  scams when you travel , including some very specific ones tied to traveling to the Olympics or Paralympics. Most Olympics scams revolve around ticket sales. Make sure you know the official ticket format (print, digital, etc.). Be aware that you should only buy tickets from the Games' official site. The same goes for hospitality and travel packages. If in doubt, contact someone via the Games' official site to check their legitimacy.

Even if they seem honest, resellers or scalpers may be unable to give you tickets that will be accepted at the gate. For one thing, many of the Games' tickets are nominative and non-transferable. For another, buying fake tickets is against the law in most destinations and, at the very least, is likely to mean you won't be able to attend the venue you paid (an illegal third party) for. In addition to watching out for Olympics-related scams, be aware of scams where you're headed. Do an online search of "tourist scams" plus your destination before you leave.

Know what you can and can't bring to Olympic events

It's surprisingly difficult to find information about what spectators are allowed to bring to Olympic and Paralympic events. So you may have to contact someone via the official site for the Games you're attending. For instance, as of this writing, a representative via Paris 2024's customer support was able to confirm that spectators at the Paris 2024 Games can bring  "a reasonable quantity" of food and drinks — they just have to fit into a backpack of up to 25 liters. Glass bottles and containers aren't allowed, and neither are tins and cans, so stick with plastic bottles. For the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, alcoholic beverages are prohibited due to French law. An exception will be made for VIP ticket holders, though, according to France 24 .

For outdoor events, be sure you have sun protection (sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, etc.) and a parka or raincoat if it rains. For the Summer Games, you may also want to consider things like a cooling towel or a paper (or mini-electric) fan to keep you from overheating. And for the Winter Games, don't forget gloves, a hat, a warm coat, warm shoes, lip balm, and any other gear to keep you comfortable. Venues' and Games' rules can vary, but keep in mind that while cell phones will probably always be allowed, you won't be allowed to bring things like drones, professional cameras, laser pointers, and radios. On the other hand, don't forget your tickets and ID!

Get to know Olympics fan culture

Olympics fans know the official lingo and have developed their own fan culture, too. Getting familiar with these can enrich your experience — and sometimes get you perks and freebies. For instance, if you're feeling stressed about Games trip planning, and budget isn't too much of an issue, hospitality packages are worth looking into. These official packages include tickets to certain events, access to private boxes or lounges, food, gifts, and additional goodies. Travel packages are a similar option, providing accommodations and tickets to events.

Another term to know: hospitality houses. Run by countries or sponsors, they're a place to relax, watch competitions, and root for the house's team. Some also provide samples of a country's cuisine or host visits from Olympic athletes. They're sometimes free and open to the public (although you may have to reserve a spot). Hospitality houses are understandably very popular among those in the know.

No discussion of Olympic fan culture would be complete without mentioning pins. Collectors from around the world gather to show, trade, and sell the pins they've acquired from previous Olympics, in a tradition that's as old as the revived Games themselves. Whether you're into pins or not, stopping to watch some trading is a unique and quintessential Olympics experience!

The 3,100-mile Olympic torch relay is underway. Here's what to know about the symbolic tradition.

By Caitlin O'Kane

April 16, 2024 / 9:57 AM EDT / CBS News

The Olympic flame has been lit in Olympia, Greece, kicking off the torch relay for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Ahead of each Summer Olympics, the torch is lit in the ancient site where the games were founded, connecting the event back to its roots.

The torch is carried to the host city by runners and other modes of transportation. This year, the torch will be carried to Athens and then taken on a three-masted sailboat across the Mediterranean Sea to Marseille, France. It will travel around France and its islands with athletes until it lands in Paris on July 26 for the opening ceremony of the games.

Boats will carry the torch to islands like Martinique and French Polynesia. A complete list of stops is found on the Olympics website and the relay will be live-streamed. It will take 68 days to complete the 3,100-mile relay.

Lighting Ceremony Of The Olympic Flame

A  selection process to choose the whopping 10,000 athletes who will carry the flame began in June 2023.

The torch never goes out during the relay. A new torch is designed for each Olympics and it is specially made to withstand elements. The flame is typically fueled by gas and is capable of burning longer than the relay will take. It rests in a special cauldron overnight.

A special ceremony was held in Olympia on Tuesday, with an actress lighting the flame at the temple of the Greek goddess Hera.

The Olympic flame is lit in Olympia

The ancient Olympic games were held in Olympia from 776 BC through 393 AD and the first modern Olympics began in Athens in 1896.

But the symbolic torch wasn't used until the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and the inaugural relay took place in 1936 ahead of the Berlin Olympics.

The relay has been held for every Summer Olympics since and is even in the Olympic rule book, which states: "The Olympic flame is the flame which is kindled in Olympia under the authority of the IOC."

Olympic swimmer Florent Manaudou was chosen as a leader for one of the relays.

"It's incredible to be captain. When you are a kid discovering the Games, you see the sporting part but also the Olympic torch, which is highly symbolic," Manaudou said. "I am very happy to showcase all the amazing landscapes we have in France."

Olympic flame for Olympic Games Paris 2024 lit in spectacular ceremony

Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of the High Priestess, holds the torch during the flame lighting ceremony for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics at Ancient Olympia

The Olympic flame for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 burst into life today (Tuesday, 16 April) during a special ceremony at the archaeological site of Olympia—the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.

During a ritual that links the modern Olympic Games to its ancient origins, the Olympic flame was lit in front of the ruins of the temple of Hera by an actress playing the part of the high priestess.

Several important dignitaries including IOC President Thomas Bach and Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet were in attendance for the event, which marked the start of the flame's journey from Greece to Paris, where it will arrive on 26 July for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Before the lighting of the Olympic flame took place, president Estanguet spoke of Paris 2024's responsibility to nurture the Olympic flame:

"Our role as organisers is to do everything we can to continue to nurture and grow this flame, in our country and around the world. One hundred years after the last summer Games in our country, the people of France will have the immense honour and pleasure of hosting this magnificent 33 rd Olympiad of the modern Games."

President Estanguet, who won three Olympic gold medals in canoe slalom, added:

"In line with the International Olympic Committee's Agenda 2020, we are proud that the Paris 2024 Games will not only be spectacular, but also more environmentally responsible, in order to meet the challenge of the century: climate change.

"Together, we're going to organise some great Games, and it all starts today, with the launch of the Olympic Torch Relay, which will cross the whole of France, from Marseille to Paris!"

President Bach then took to the stage to deliver his speech, where he stressed that the Olympic Games can bring the world together through peaceful competition.

"In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even – and in particular – during times of wars and conflict. Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. The athletes will shine in their sport and show us what greatness humans are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience.

"The Olympic flame that we are lighting today symbolises this hope for a better future. The Olympic flame will carry this Olympic spirit from here, our ancient roots, through all of France and to Paris – making the City of Light shine even brighter.

"The Olympic flame will shine over the first Olympic Games inspired by our Olympic Agenda reforms from start to finish. These Olympic Games will be younger, more inclusive, more urban, more sustainable. These will be the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity because the IOC allocated exactly 50 per cent of the quota places to female and male athletes."

The Olympic flame was then brought forward by Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of High Priestess, who passed it to the first torchbearer of the Olympic Torch Relay: Greek athlete Stefanos Ntouskos , who won gold in the men's single sculls at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

After receiving the flame, Ntouskos carried the flame to the monument to Pierre de Coubertin, which holds the heart of the father of the modern Olympic movement.

Ntouskos then passed the flame to the second torchbearer of the relay, three-time Olympic medallist Laure Manaudou of France.

After a short run, Manaudou was met by the third torchbearer of the ceremony: Margaritis Schinas , vice-president of the European Commission.

The Olympic flame will now embark upon an 11-day relay throughout Greece that will see more than 550 torchbearers carry the flame, with the final destination being the Panathenaic Stadium for the handover ceremony.

When is the Olympic flame handover ceremony?

The Olympic flame will arrive in Athens ahead of the handover ceremony to the Paris 2024 organising committee at the Panathenaic Stadium on Friday 26 April, with the event getting underway at 18:30 CEST.

Following the ceremony, the Olympic flame will spend the night at the French Embassy in Athens before boarding the Belem (a famous three-masted ship that first launched in 1896) the following day to head for Marseille, France, where it will arrive to great fanfare on 8 May.

Where can I watch the Olympic flame handover ceremony?

The Olympic flame handover ceremony will take place on 26 April at 18:30 CEST and you can watch every moment live on Olympics.com .

The Canadian women’s soccer team will play two friendlies against CONCACAF rivals Mexico in June before they travel to Paris to defend their Olympic gold medal.

The two matches, called Canada’s special ‘Summer Send-Off Series’, will be part of the team’s preparations for the Olympics, which will be played in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

The matches against Mexico will be held on June 1 (14.00 ET) in Montreal, Quebec and three days later in Toronto (19.30 ET).

“We are excited to reconnect with our fans after some fantastic home games at the back of 2023 which really kicked off our 2024 Olympic Campaign,” said head coach Bev Priestman in a news release .

“The tremendous love and support for this team was felt coast to coast and this window will be a great opportunity to send this team off in style to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”

Priestman described Mexico as a “difficult” opponent and said facing them would be the ideal preparation for Canada.

“Mexico has shown recently they are a difficult team to face, which is exactly what we need before finalizing our Olympic roster and continuing to evolve and cement our tactical identity before the 25th of July,” she added.

Canada won gold at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 after beating Sweden on penalties in the final.

At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, they failed to make it beyond the group stage, finishing third in their group behind co-hosts Australia and African giants Nigeria.

For the Paris Olympics, Canada are in Group A with France, Colombia and New Zealand. The group stage of the 12-team women's tournament starts July 25.

Canada’s women’s team will be playing in the Olympics for a fifth consecutive time. They have reached the knockout stage in all four of their previous appearances at the Olympic Games, securing two bronze medals in 2012 and 2016, and a gold medal in 2021.

Canada remain the only nation to have reached the podium three consecutive times at the women’s Olympic football tournament in the last decade.

The team has played in two tournaments this year, having reached the final in the SheBelieves Cup, where they lost to four-time world champions USA on penalties. In the CONCACAF W Gold Cup, Canada reached the semifinals, again losing there to the USWNT.
