Voyage into space.

1970 Directed by Minoru Yamada

Earth is invaded by an interstellar terrorist group, Big Fire (the Gargoyle Gang in the American version), led by Emperor Guillotine who spends most of his time in a multicolored space ship hidden at the bottom of Earth's ocean, from which he issues his orders. Big Fire is capturing scientists to create an army of monsters to conquer Earth. A boy named Daisaku Kusama (Johnny Sokko in the American version) and a young Unicorn agent named Jūrō Minami (Jerry Mano in the American version) are shipwrecked on an island after being attacked by a sea monster and subsequently captured by Big Fire. They flee to where a Pharaoh-like giant robot is being built by captive scientist Lucius Guardian, who gives Daisaku and Jūrō its control device. Guardian helps them escape before he is shot to death; before he dies, he triggers an atomic bomb which destroys the base. The radiation activates the robot, which now obeys only Daisaku.

Review by Blake Bergman "Various Spaghetti" ★★★★

"Voyage Into Space" is a 1970 science fiction Tokusatsu film directed by Minoru Yamada. In reality, the film itself is really an assembled highlight reel of events from the series "Giant Robo" (1967-1968). The series only featured 26 episodes and ran from October 1967 to April 1968. An easy subgenre to mention is much of Kaiju films coexist within the application of "Tokusatsu", which plays to the Japanese televised candor of situated war and science fiction intermixed on a grand scale battled form. Easily if you think of all of the wonderful generic tropes like giant monsters destroying miniature model buildings with someone in a rubber suit, you are capturing the wonderment that "Giant Robo" and "Voyage Into Space" is…

Review by HKFanatic ★★★★

Takes several episodes from the late 60's Japanese television show "Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot" (imagine a lower-budget version of "Ultraman" aimed squarely at the youth market) and edits them into one 100-minute feature. As you can imagine, the hodgepodge nature of the production renders this 'film' as somewhat incoherent, but it's also packed with incident: "Voyage Into Space" moves at a steady clip from one giant kaiju threat to the next, with the pint-sized, pistol-packing Johnny Sokko directing his Giant Robot to battle evil at the behest of a global spy agency named Unicorn.

The resourceful and brave Johnny Sokko is probably the coolest 10 year-old to ever grace TV screens, and part of what makes this series/movie…

To me, Tokusatsu films are what the kids call “cozy”.

Simple, colourful films of fantasy and spectacle. Basic characters, hokey dialogue, wall to wall miniatures and explosions. I don't think I've ever seen Johnny Sokko but the theme music dredged up a nearly forgotten memory.

I gotta say, Johnny's sartorial choices are a STATEMENT. Double breasted suit jacket with shorts and knee socks???? Perfect for gun battles!

Space Nazi Commies are tasked to destroy a kid controlled flying pharaoh robot by sending giant wacky creatures against it.

All this results in a surprisingly high body count as dozens of people are shot, crushed or blown to bits.

Cutting this together from episodes of the TV show results in nearly non stop action and crazy shit. That's my jam!

Film #182 of 2024.

An English-dubbed compilation movie of GIANT ROBO aka JOHNNY SOKKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT!

Johnny bonds with Giant Robot and together they fight against an evil alien and his army. Giant Robot battles monsters, punches a dam, and then valiantly sacrifices himself to save the Earth. The narrator reassures us that if Johnny really needs his help again, maybe there will be a miracle to bring him back. But I’m not so sure…

This is pretty bottom barrel cheapo stuff. I like the sharp sci-fi uniforms Johnny and his fellow agents of Unicorn wear, and there’s some good music from time to time (mostly it’s just the theme song on repeat), but the production value on this show is pretty…

Never got to see the series as a kid (though living in Hawai'i I was exposed to tons of tokusatsu and sentai shows) except for this which occasionally ran on KITV. Little kid Johnny Sokko and Unicorn agent Jerry Mano find themselves the sole survivors of an attack on a ship by kaiju Draculon. They wind up in a secret lab where Dr. Guardian reveals he has been forced to create a giant robot named... Giant Robot. Guardian blows up the lab but the robot survives and only answers to Johnny. Johnny is recruited into Unicorn to battle Guillotine (who looks like Cthullhu) and his kaiju army. It's strictly kid stuff. Since this was made from edited TV episodes it's short on plot and character development but full of kaiju vs. mecha fights. Still recommending it.

if I had found this as a kid I would’ve watched it one hundred thousand times. must’ve been a giant influence on Brad Bird.

DubiousLegacy

Review by DubiousLegacy ★★

Voyage Into Space squishes together a bunch of episodes of Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot , which was itself a dubbed import of the Showa Giant Robo toko series from Japan. A plucky kid in a blazer and shorts commands a huge extraterrestrial robot to fight giant monsters. It's hokey spy adventures in the style of Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Johnny Quest , but with kaiju.

I'm working on a little project that draws on The Iron Giant , so I watched this in order to trace the origins of the "kid and his giant robot" genre (e.g. Gigantor , Giant Robo , Frankenstein Jr. ... even T2 could count!). Brad Bird owes a lot to Johnny Sokko , I think, even though I can't find…

"Tremendous! A giant robot!"

This is just 4 random episodes of the series Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot edited into a movie (with little effort to fill in the viewer of any gaps,) an that series itself is the "Americanized" recut of a Japanese tokusatsu series called Giant Robo .

The kaiju in this seem really random, the like the second one is just a giant land mine? And a later one is just a big eyeball (Feels like an influence on Evangelion , for sure.) and I'm not quite sure how the bad guys control them? (But maybe that's explained better in the original series?)

The show isn't shot super well and the special effects don't look amazing, but I could still see myself getting into it. I mean, it's no Ultraman , but It's simple, packed with action, and pretty fun (especially since the early Gamera films have been super lacking in that department for me.)

Johnny Sokko and that giant robot get their own movie, sort of, in this AIP-TV stitch-up job featuring much of the first and last episodes and three more in between to create a fairly cohesive movie whole. Lots of fun with bright, splashy colors all over the place and plenty of fun monsters and action, plus the usual beloved dubbing. mondo-digital.com/voyagespace.html

This is boring and janky as shit and the English dub sucks but it’s a nice little charmer to zone out to. I would’ve fucked with this hard Saturday mornings as a kid especially with Johnny Sokko living my dream of becoming a child soldier for the state.

Voyage Into Space (1970)

Because the nonsensical matters!  That’s why Voyage into Space exists!  Seriously, though, you don’t get Iron Giant without a stop alongside Voyage into Space , about a boy who controls an IRON GIANT (yeah, I went there!) with his wristwatch!

Long before the morning and afternoon airwaves were filled with celebrity hosted feel-good shows there were episodes of the kid-friendly, super stupid Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot to watch!  Sure, sure it helped being a kid who spent the summers in a major metropolitan area and not having to watch Farm Report episodes on the local channels (like a lot of my friends had to), but - honestly - what 12-year-old isn’t going to go gaga over 200-foot pharaoh-looking robot that only a boy can control with his watch?  Thanks to KTLA Channel 5, I was in heaven.

“Robot!  Stop the attack!  Robot!  Don’t do it!  You’ll die!  I neeeeeed you!”  Oh, man.  I credit this movie with so much iconic nerdism that followed in its wake.  From Ultraman and beyond, I wouldn’t be who I am today without Johnny Soko and Jerry Mano’s showdown with the flashy nitwits in the plastic-suited Gargoyle Gang and the evil Emperor Guillotine.

It’s also the movie which - and I am not kidding here - made me accept the fact that sometimes the saddest of endings are the very best way to bring things to a conclusion.  That’s right, the robot dies at the end with a fateful BOOM .  It’s a heroic death and it made me bawl as a kid.  Hell, I’m probably still crying over it somewhere deep in my soul right now.

Voyage Into Space (1970)

This out of this world story about a boy and his big robot and their adventure to save Tokyo from a dog-faced lizard monster has everything a kid could ever want in a movie.  Robots! Monsters! And a kid-sized hero who, alongside a super secret spy group called UNICORN, stops the sinister Emperor Guillotine and his rogues gallery of monsters.

Truthfully, Voyage into Space is edited together from four (of the 26) episodes of Johnny Soko and His Flying Robot , but it (sometimes) tells a uniquely (read as accidental) comprehensive (ha ha) story that, thanks to its final few minutes, still leaves the boy in me in a puddle of tears (this part is true). With a high camp attitude and plenty of lasers along the way, this cheese-fest is absolutely a 98-minute blast of low budget kaiju vibes.

Directed by Minoru Yamada and starring Mitsunobu Kaneko, Akio Itô, Jerry Berke, and Toshiyuki Tsuchiyama, this low budget Japanese monster flick is full of manic energy and all sorts of nonsensical fun as an alien ship lands in the sea and launches an attack against the world which includes Draculon the Sea Monster, Nucleon the Magic Globe, the train-swallowing Lygon, and a gargoyle named Vine.  Thankfully, the super spies at UNICORN know how to stop the monsters and their originator, but it’s going to take a giant robot and a kid to control it!

While the movie is no longer broadcast on television, it can now be yours to own on blu-ray thanks to Scorpion Releasing who present the movie with a new 2019 HD master!

5/5 stars

Voyage Into Space (1970)

Home Video Distributor: Scorpion Releasing Available on Blu-ray - February 2, 2021 Screen Formats: 1.37:1 Subtitles : English Audio: Japanese 2.0 Discs: Blu-ray Disc; single disc Region Encoding: Locked to Region A

For the first time on Blu-Ray is the original compilation movie assembled from episodes of the TV series JOHNNY SOKKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT . Experience the far-out exploits of a young secret agent who battles the vile minions and colossal monsters of Emperor Guillotine, extraterrestrial dictator of the nefarious Gargoyle Gang. Joining the fight is an atomic-powered giant robot, armed with a fantastic array of superweapons, which only Johnny can command via a remote control wristwatch.

The 1080p AVC/MPEG-4, presented in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, look much better than the DVD copies issued the last time Johnny Sokko was circulated.  The picture is bigger, less grainy, and the colors - while they don’t pop exactly - are one level to showcase the work that went into creating the monsters.  There are noticeable limitations in the production value and those will be spotted right away, but this release is the best the movie has ever looked thanks to the new 2019 HD master.

A Japanese 2.0 track accompanies the image.  English subtitles/captions are also a choice.
