For the most up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the website Tennessee Board of Nursing or contact the Tennessee Board of Nursing at 1-800-778-4123 .

Licensure Requirements

Since Tennessee has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse there if you already have a multistate license (MSL) in another compact state. You may apply for licensure in Tennessee and work on the MSL for up to 90 days.

If your primary license is in a non-compact state, you must apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you have to:

  • Get a criminal background check .
  • Request verification of licensure from the state where you were originally licensed. You may use Nursys®   to do this for most states. However, if your original license was obtained in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Louisiana-PN, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, you must contact your board for verification instructions.
  • Recent passport-type photograph legibly signed and dated on the front
  • Copy of nursing diploma or transcript (or request an official transcript mailed from the nursing program)
  • Notarized Declaration of Citizenship form with accompanying proof (such as a copy of a driver’s license)
  • Documents related to any criminal conviction, if applicable, along with a letter of explanation

Applicants must be graduates of approved schools of practical or registered nursing and licensed by written examination to become nurses in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Board of Nursing accepts scores from the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE) or the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) as long as they are greater than or equal to the lowest passing scores required.

Allow six weeks for processing of your licensure by endorsement application. Tennessee does not allow temporary licenses , so any travel nursing jobs you take in this state must be far enough out to allow you to submit all the required paperwork and wait for it to be approved.

Licensure Fees

The application fee for licensure by endorsement is $115.

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Tennessee has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 19, 2018.

Is Tennessee a Walk-Through State?

Tennessee is not a walk-through state.

Tennessee RNs and LPNs must have five hours of continuing education every two years or ten hours if they are not currently practicing.

In addition to these requirements, APRNs with a Certificate of Fitness must also have two hours of continuing education related to controlled substance prescribing practices.

Per the Tennessee Board of Nursing, RNs and LPNs are also required any combination of two of the following every two years:

  • Evidence of current national certification
  • Copy of satisfactory employer evaluation
  • Letter from a peer providing a satisfactory evaluation of your nursing performance
  • Letter from patient or family member giving evidence of satisfactory nurse/patient relationship
  • Copy of a contract of renewal or re-appointment to a nursing position
  • Written self-evaluation based on the standards of competence listed in the rules
  • A document that identifies two nursing goals and how those goals were met
  • A letter from the agency where you volunteered as a nurse
  • Documentation from a school of nursing stating that you participated in the education of nursing students
  • Copy of a published article relevant to nursing written by the licensee
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a nursing refresher course
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a comprehensive nursing orientation program
  • Official transcript (may be student-issued) demonstrating two hours of nursing credit
  • Evidence of successfully retaken NCLEX

I'm currently in Nashville on assignment and it's is full of great things! Incredible live music, culture, and people who desire to treat all with love, respect, and kindness! The sun seems to always be shining, the food is amazing, and the hospitals have been good to me. I would highly suggest this city as your next travel destination!!

Trusted nurse staffing is such a great company to work for and they are so easy to work with. I love using them as my first company for travel nursing!

My recruiter did an amazing job at finding the best fit for me! An outstanding job with communication, updates and ensuring all my questions were answered!!

I have been with Trusted Staffing for about 18 months now. I have essentially been working local contracts, but the experiences have been memorable. My recruiter, is always available when I have a question or concern. Travel nursing is something all nurses should experience. I can't wait until I can do some serious traveling

Every member of this company I’ve interacted with has exceeded my expectations. My recruiter, Alex, is so commutative and goes above and beyond always. I can’t imagine switching to another company!

I have had the best experience with Trusted Nurse Staffing. My recruiter Tom is amazing. He always treats me with respect and as a friend. He is on top of everything I need. And when my Dad passed away, he helped me with time off, no problem and they even sent me a beautiful comfort box that was very helpful. Fully recommend this agency.

Music. BBQ. The Great Smoky Mountains. These things often come to mind when you think about visiting Tennessee. For some, this may be all they need. But Tennessee has even more to offer!

If you’re interested in travel nursing, Tennessee is a great state to work in because of all the recreation opportunities it provides.

Throughout the state, you can find venues, festivals, and concerts filled with music. The state is a great mix of musical genres like:

  • Rock and roll
  • Southern gospel

Tennessee’s musical legacy is that of legends such as:

  • Elvis Presley
  • Johnny Cash
  • Dolly Parton
  • And many more

If you’re a music history aficionado, Tennessee may feel like coming home.

Are you a fan of spelunking? Tennessee has more than 3,800 documented caves. Horse lovers will feel right at home in Shelby County. There are more horses per capita here than in any other county in the United States.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains and straddles the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee. It’s the most visited national park in the U.S. The Appalachian Trail runs through the center of the park. If you’re not a thru-hiker, chunks of the Appalachian Trail can be done as day hikes.

Even if seeing the home of Elvis is not a pilgrimage for you, Graceland is worth a visit. You can take a tour with an interactive iPad hosted by John Stamos with commentary and stories by Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie. Tour the mansion, see Elvis’ customized airplanes, and visit Elvis Presley’s Memphis at Graceland, an entertainment and exhibit complex that spans over 200,000 square feet.

If you find yourself in Nashville, Centennial Park is a central gathering place. This 132-acre park has walking trails, volleyball courts, a dog park, a playground, a bandshell, and the Centennial Arts Center. Here you can also find a replica of the original Parthenon in Greece which acts as an art museum. Nashville is also home to the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

And if you’re a fan of nightlife, downtown Nashville is quite the party scene these days! Live music, dancing, and lots of fun are what make it one of the top bachelorette party destinations in the country.

Even beyond this limited list, whether you’re looking back in history or enjoying the present when looking for travel nurse positions, Tennessee has a lot to offer.
