Birding Malaysia

Malaysia has a well-deserved reputation as one of the world’s major birding destinations. Well over 800 species of birds have been recorded in Peninsular and Bornean Malaysia. This richness of birds combined with the wonderful scenery and friendly people makes any visit an unforgettable experience for the birder, whether first timer or veteran. Moreover, the mainland infrastructure is modern so transport across country is trouble free. For the intrepid, there are many endemic species to go after (most in Borneo and just a few in the Peninsular). This entails a visit combining sites in Peninsular Malaysia and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. There are separate pages for the Peninsular and for Borneo and one for the Kuala Lumpur area for those who are passing through and only have a day or too to spend there.

A typical itinerary covers two-three weeks and usually takes in the montane forest species of Fraser’s Hill and the lowland forest species of Taman Negara National Park and Gombak before jetting across to Borneo for the mossy forest species in Kinabalu National park and the lowland forest species of Danum Valley or Kinabatangan River. Over 300 species can be seen if taking this option and commonly encountered birds include such gems as Rhinoceros Hornbill, Red-naped Trogon, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Gold-whiskered Barbet, Garnet and Banded Pittas and several babbler, bulbul and sunbird species. In Borneo, savour the endemics like Crimson-headed Partridge, Bornean Barbet, White-fronted Falconet, Whitehead’s Broadbill, Bornean Bristlehead, Blue-headed Pitta and Whitehead’s Spiderhunter.

For those with only a couple of days to spare, there are accessible sights near Kuala Lumpur (Gombak); Malaysia’s Capital City, and Singapore (Panti Forest Reserve). And don’t forget the cultural and food attractions!I have found it hard to get a definitive list of Malaysian endemics – numbers ranging from 4 to 60! The confusion arises from Borneo. The Malaysian mainland does have as few as two endemics… although there is no agreement on this and Borneo as a whole as many as 58 but the Malaysian parts of Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah) have far fewer.

Birdwatching in Malaysia: an essential guide

Sep 22, 2015 • 4 min read

bird watching tour malaysia

More than 750 bird species can be found under Malaysia’s chattering jungle canopies – that’s a whole lot of feathers for a relatively small nation. Whether you’re an avid birder or a newbie who doesn’t know a heron from a hornbill, the wild plumages, delicate calls and orchestrated movements of Malaysia’s birds are sure to delight.

Malaysia’s birding habitats

Serious birders could spend an entire trip to Malaysia ticking off the 40-plus documented endemic species found in the country’s large system of natural parks and preserves. Casual observers are likely to spot a handful of interesting birds in just one of Malaysia’s prime birding habitats.

Top spots include Selangor’s Cape Rachado Forest Reserve , Endau-Rompin National Park in Johor;  Fraser’s Hill and Kenong Rimba State Park in Pahang; Bako National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park and Lambir Hills National Park in Sarawak;  Mt Kinabalu National Park in Sabah; and Taman Negara National Park, which spreads across Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu.

There are so many birds in Fraser’s Hill – an easy day trip from Kuala Lumpur – that the local government celebrates with the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race ( blog.malaysia-asia.my/2015/05/frasers-hill-international-bird-race.html ) in May or June. Cape Rachado has a long-running raptor watch where you can sight any number of migrating raptors – generally seen September to November or March to May. Top birds of prey include the oriental honey buzzard, ospreys, black baza, black-shouldered kite, Japanese sparrowhawk, greater spotted eagle, Chinese goshawk and grey-faced buzzard.

Malaysia’s coolest birds

While you’ll need a big-boy zoom lens to get the best pics, you don’t need more than a set of binoculars (or a keen eye) to go birding. Naturalist guides in most of Malaysia’s parks are good at sighting the A-list species. Keep your eyes peeled for these scene-stealing birds.

A scarlet-billed rhinoceros hornbill bird perched on a tree branch.

Rhinoceros hornbill

There are 10 species of hornbill found in Malaysia – running the descriptor gamut from great and white-crowned to helmeted, wrinkled and bushy. These resplendent birds are hands-down Malaysia’s signature species. The rhinoceros hornbill is arguably the best-looking of the bunch with its horn-like crown and powerful figure, but the plain-pouched is the rarest. You can spot all 10 species at Temenggor Lake (Perak) and thousands of plain-pouched hornbills come here from August to September.

Kenyir Lake ( Terengganu ) is another top spot for hornbill viewing. Hornbills are a bell-weather species – they require large habitat ranges, are mostly monogamous, and because of their substantial size, need large trees for nesting. With lots of logging outside the national parks, their natural habitat is shrinking, and could be a concern for the future.

Malayan peacock-pheasant

Also known as the Malaysia peacock-pheasant or the crested peacock-pheasant, this gorgeous bird is endemic to peninsular Malaysia. You’ll know them instantly because of the glowing blue-green eyes and chartreuse tail-feather markings on the male. Because of habitat loss – and in the case of Thailand , hunting – this bird is now listed as vulnerable, with 2500 to 10,000 individuals living here mostly in tall primary and secondary lowland dipterocarp forest. Search them out in Taman Negara, where you can also find their cousin, the mountain peacock-pheasant.

Malaysia

Black and crimson pitta

These diminutive ground dwellers are endemic to Sabah . They have a lovely red belly and the look of a friendly cartoon animal. You can find these guys in tropical rainforest in Sabah from sea level to 300m. Look in ravines and beneath dense cover, especially in primary forest like the Danum Valley Conservation Area.

Dulit partridge

Would you call yourself a lucky person? You’ll need to be in order to seek out this Sarawak native, as no sightings have been recorded since 1937. But birding experts say the best places to look include the hills of Mount Dulit or Mount Batu Song in Sarawak. If you spot one, take a picture fast! And then consider buying a lottery ticket.

A kingfisher with orange and green feathers holds a shrimp in its beak

Storkbilled kingfisher

Arguably the most patriotic bird in Malaysia’s skies, the outsized orange beaks, blue backs, brown caps, and yellow collars and chests sported by these kingfishers mimic the colours of the nation’s flag. And in welcome news for gender equality in the bird world, both males and females sport wonderful colouration. Where there is water, there are kingfishers. Look for them in mangrove forests, rice paddies, lakes and rivers. The island of Langkawi has eight species.

Red-naped trogon

You’ve never seen red until you’ve spotted a male red-naped trogon, whose broad belly is such a brilliant shade of scarlet it could stop traffic. Spot these showstoppers in primary evergreen forests at an elevation of around 600m.

A black and yellow broadbill bird, brightly coloured in orange and yellow feather and a blue beak, sings from a narrow tree branch

Black and yellow broadbill

If Picasso and Matisse got together over a few absinthes and painted a bird, this evocative and rather expressionist fellow might take form. There are seven unique species of broadbill in Malaysia. Look for them on Fraser’s Hill, Maxwell Hill, Taiping , Sedim, Taman Negara and Kenyir Lake. Their nests might be the first thing you spot – they hang these elaborate pear-shaped pouches above water, hidden with plant fibres, webs and other camouflage.

Tabin Wildlife Reserve Birdwatching 4D3N

Book this tour, day 1 lahad datu – tabin wildlife resort (l/d).

Transfer from Lahad Datu to Tabin Wildlife Reserve on a gravel road for about an hour and a half.  Check into the charming timber bungalow of Tabin Wildlife Resort which comes complete with private balcony and hot water shower, a real luxury in the forest. Explore the vicinity of the resort and be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of bird life.  The open-sided Sunbird Café is surrounded by greenery and flowering plants which attract a number of brightly coloured birds.   Be entertained by the melodious calls of birds. A bird hide facing the flowing Lipad River provides a wonderful site for viewing birds.  In the afternoon, depart for birding along the Core Road where you will most likely be able to spot one or more of Borneo’s eight species of hornbill such as the Black, White-crowned, Rhinoceros, Wreathed, Oriental Pied and Wrinkled Hornbill either flying in groups across the sky, or in pairs perching on bare branches. After dinner, enjoy a slide presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a Night Safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.

Day 2 Lipad Mud Volcano & Bird Watch (B/L/D)

After an early breakfast depart for the active Lipad mud volcano with packed lunch. The soccer field-sized Lipad mud volcano s erves as a mineral salt lick for wildlife.  After trekking for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano which is frequented by wildlife and birds. Climb the observation tower and admire the contrasting landscape of the bare area and its surrounding thick forest.  A nearby fig-tree is a feasting place for hornbills and other birds and primates during the fruiting season.  Across from the observation tower, bare branches of towering trees are favourite perching place for Green Imperial Pigeons and Doves. In the evening join the dusk drive to look for nocturnal birds coming out at this time to feed. After dinner, go for a night walk to discover more nocturnal bird species.

Day 3 Birding in the Core Area of Tabin Wildlife Reserve (B/L/D)
