Shasta came out in 2015 with a limited edition replica of its classic 1961 Shasta Airflyte complete with its iconic Shasta wings. This modern-day retro-style travel trailer looks nearly identical to the original ‘61 Shasta down to the window dimensions, scalloped cabinet doors, and original exterior colors.

But the Airflyte has made some major improvements since the 60s including LED lighting, a bathroom instead of a closet, audio and video technology, reliable heating and air conditioning, and of course, modern-day appliances. Vintage travel trailers first appeared in North America in the early 1920’s and quickly rose to fame as more and more people were taking to the roads.  They allowed travellers to explore the great outdoors while maintaining the safety and luxury of a cozy home on wheels wherever their journeys took them.  By the 1950’s, travel trailers were the most recognizable shape on the road and their popularity still holds strong today.

Keep in mind that although the numbers listed in these guides are taken from original manufacturer specification sheets and advertisements, they are approximate and weights can vary greatly depending on many circumstances such as where the trailer was manufactured, its layout, equipment, modifications, and overall load. Be careful never to pull a trailer that is too heavy for your vehicle as it can cause damage to your vehicle and an unsafe situation on the road. Be sure to get your trailer weighed to know it’s exact weight.

Vintage Airstream Trailers

Airstream trailers can be identified by their rounded aluminum tops and bodies. The seemless rounded top offers better aerodynamics and protection from the rain, preventing water damage that affects many of the flat-top trailers.

In 1936, a lawyer and magazine operator named Wally Byum introduced the Airstream Clipper, the first of the silver, sausage-shaped trailers that went on be such a huge success.  Airstream’s success continues to this day, making it the oldest trailer manufacturer in the industry. Vintage Shasta Trailers

One of the most popular lines of trailers is the Shasta. Easily recognized by its distinctive wings and “canned-ham” shape, the Shasta trailer was the best selling travel trailer brand from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.  They quickly became a favorite of campers all over the United States due to their low price and high quality. They remain very popular with vintage travel trailer restorers and collectors.  Shasta travel trailers were manufactured from 1941 until 2004, then again since 2010.

Vintage Aristocrat Trailers

Manufactured from 1956 to 1974, the Aristocrat travel trailers advertised garage storage with their Lo-Liner series.  Aristocrat vintage travel trailers were able to be equipped with optional metal wheels which lowered the overall height, allowing them to be stored in a garage.

Vintage Avion Trailers

Avion travel trailers were first introduced in 1957 and are some of the highest quality trailers built.  The body is two complete aluminum riveted shells with treated fiberglass insulation between them.  Avion’s high standard for quality can also be found in its hardwood floors and dovetail cabinetry.

Pre-1963 Avion trailers have an aluminum skin that can be polished to a mirror finish. Shells made after 1963 have a satin finish and are more durable.

Vintage Aloha Trailers

Aloha manufactured economic travel trailers from 1954 to 1970. They were a smaller comapany but quite popular.

Vintage Kenskill Trailers

Kenskill manufactured travel trailers from 1946 to the mid 70’s.  A larger company, Kenskill had made 18,000 travel trailers by 1959.  These  trailers were designed to be stood up in and offer plenty of head room.

 Vintage Airfloat Trailers

Airfloat travel trailers were built from 1930 to 1957 and featured an aluminum body with round port-hole windows which are unable to be opened.  Later models included openable square windows to improve air flow.

Vintage Spartan Trailers

Spartan travel trailers were manufactured from 1945 to 1961 by the Spartan Aircraft Company. Owned by one of the richest men in America at the time, J. Paul Getty, no expense was spared in the creation of these high quality travel trailers.  They were built with the same techniques used in the manufacturing of their airplanes. The result was some of the highest quality travel trailers available, and their price reflected that.

Forester travel trailers were built from 1958 to 1979 by Forest City Industries in Forest City, IA. #1 Happier Camper HC1

The Happier Camper is an all fiberglass modern camper with unique retro-styling. It offers an advanced modular interior system that lets you use pre-designed cubes to add functionality to the interior.

The Happier Camper is geared towards the younger generation with its cool styling. You can easily stick a dirt bike, mountain bike, and even a kayak inside. It can easily be towed with smaller SUVs and cars.

There is a lot we like about the Happier Camper. We think the modular system lends itself well to just about any floor layout you might want.

Recently a new Happier Camper retro model was added; it’s called the HCT. The HCT is the big brother of the HC1. It has two dedicated living spaces, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. It may look like a retro camper, but it has all the modern features you would expect.

The look is reminiscent of the canned ham campers.

For Tammy and I, if we had to choose one, it would be the Happier Camper Traveler. It is a larger, more comfortable camper with an integrated Adaptiv bathroom and kitchenette. They are expensive and nowhere near the price of a used retro camper, but they are built to last.

#2 Riverside RV Retro

The Riverside RV Retro has all the styles of classic travel trailers. From the whitewall tires to the red and white color scheme, it oozes the 50s and 60s. It’s available in 14-floor plans, including a travel trailer toy hauler .

It’s loaded with modern features such as a microwave, Bluetooth radio with inside and outside speakers, birch interior, USB ports, and more.

Riverside Retro is by far our favorite retro trailer. Not only does it have that beautiful vintage RV camper look, it has about everything you need for a fun adventure.

They make several models of this retro travel trailer, and they all have the same beautiful vintage look. They are a bit more than typical campers, but we think they are worth it if you look for that classic retro camper look.

The Retro 193 is our favorite model from the Riverside RV lineup. We like that it has a walk-around Murphy bed that converts to a retro-red sofa, the shower and toilet are separate, which we also like, and we like the spacious kitchen and full-size fridge. Here are the specifications of the Retro 193.

#3 Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser

The spirit of the fun-loving ’50s is alive and well in the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser . It has a laminated wall construction and a one-piece laminated roof.

It is very light and aerodynamic. You get state-of-art features in a design that brings back the fun vibe and simple lifestyle of the 1950s.

You’ll also find vintage exterior graphics, moon hubcaps, stainless steel microwave, and a 2-burner stove with cover. Inside you get a classic camper drape package and your choice of 4 interior color combinations.

Tammy and I were able to do a walk-through of a Vintage Cruiser during the 2020 OKC RV and Boat Show. We fell in love with the interior right from the start. You can read our review of the Vintage Cruiser here .

Our favorite Vintage Cruiser model is the 19ERD due to the shower being on one side of the camper and the toilet and vanity across the aisle. The queen bed has space on either side so no more jumping over your spouse to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

#4 Heartland Terry Classic

The last year of production I can find on the Heartland Terry Classic is the 2019 model, which means it came out in the latter part of 2018. I’ve not seen anything for a 2020 model so there is a possibility it is not being built anymore.

When it comes to looks, I’m torn between seeing it as a retro camper or a messed-up futuristic camper.

There is a lot of shiny aluminum and a boxy exterior reminiscent of a vintage camper however, the big Airstream-type panoramic front window throws things off for me.

The exterior is an old camper style; however, the interior is all modern. This is a very nice retro camper. The huge front bay window is exceptionally nice and adds a cool 50’s retro look to the entire camper.

#5 Barefoot Camper

The Barefoot Camper is a modern camper with retro styling. It is has a hand-built fiberglass shell and comes in a range of colors.

The interior can be customized to your liking and includes a kitchen, bathroom, sofa, wardrobes, and storage.

Since it is lightweight, slim, and aerodynamic, it is super easy to tow. Barefoot Caravan recently announced that nuCampRV would bring the Barefoot to the US in 2020.

#6 Serro Scotty

The Serro Scotty has a long history dating back to 1956 when John Serro built a 16 1/2′ trailer in his garage. Unfortunately, no one would buy his first model.

Though considered a vintage camper since it is not new construction, I placed it here simply because of its history.

The next year Serro introduced a 10′ teardrop travel trailer called the Sportsman. In 1960 the teardrop shape was replaced in favor of the tear-drop “swoosh” shaped wheel well opening. In 1995 they even added motorhomes to their lineup.

In 1997 the Serro manufacturing plant burns down, and they stopped making travel trailers. Scotty is still in business making Police and Fire Safety trailers. in 2016, Litte Guy Worldwide, well-known for its teardrops campers, announced they would be building retro “Serro Scottys” in 2017. From what I can find, they build one model.

#7 Aristocrat Campers

Aristocrat campers were first built in 1956 by Irving Perch. The last unit rolled out in 1974. One of the first models was the Lo Liner because it could easily fit in a residential garage if you purchased the optional metal wheels.

This one is not necessarily a retro camper and more of a vintage camper because they are no longer made this is not new construction.

But like the Scotty above, these campers have a terrific look and are well known in the vintage camper circle.

The Lo Liner was positioned in the market as a versatile vacation trailer designed for year-round use. It included all the essential features such as a bed, dining table, refrigerator, and sofa. Aristocrat had ten models available.

#8 Dub Box USA Dinky

I love the look of the Dinky Sleepers by Dub Box USA . The Dinky is their version of a teardrop trailer with modern features but a unique vintage VW look.

The Dinky includes a custom-made Queen mattress; if you want an outdoor kitchen, you can get that too.

Lots of options are available such as privacy window shutters, roof rack, A/C heater combo, portable cooler, and much more. They even make an empty Dinky suitable as a toy hauler or for business merchandise.

Retro Campers Summary

Who says you can’t have a nice selection of retro campers with modern construction techniques and features? These days there appears to be a desire to go back to the “good ole days” of RVing, and these vintage-inspired campers will take you there.

Most of these campers will cost more than typical travel trailers, so be prepared when you start looking around for one. However, we think the cost is well worth considering the unique styling, the retro look, and the modern amenities.

If shopping for used retro campers or one of the much older vintage travel trailers, note that it may require extensive renovations. There are some excellent resources on the web showing how to renovate a vintage camper.

There are also only stores that cater to vintage camper renovations, stock parts, and sometimes custom manufacturer parts. Vintage Trailer Supply is one of the vendors that come to mind.

Timeless Travel Trailers is the manufacturer of its own brand of travel trailers known as Westcraft. 13 Retro Campers That Are Actually New

Retro campers for sale that are actually new.

Since the birth of RVing, a lot has changed and this form of holiday offers today through the large variety of models more and more opportunities for mobile vacations. But a variety of RV enthusiasts have succumbed to the charm of old models and RV manufacturers decided to satisfy this customer segment and dedicate to produce retro campers.

Hardcore RV enthusiasts recognize the soft lines, large windows, and stylish interiors are requirements that are difficult to find in modern RVs and many of them are switching to old retro campers.

However, there is a serious caveat found by these enthusiasts when they dedicate to the preservation and restoration of old and vintage campers: that despite your best effort to restore these retro campers, well, they are still retro campers: heavy materials that difficult towing, presence of asbestos, and more difficult to handle in the road.

Current retro campers merge the vintage designs we love with modern attributes and features: new interiors, durable and lighter raw materials used in the construction, easier to drive thanks to their improved structural stability and easier to tow due to their low weight.

Retro Travel Trailers: The Retro Tourer

The idea for these Retro Tourer RVs belongs to a couple: Marion and Buzz Burrell. They were always living in campers.

The two have always been traveling with VWs – ranging from a 1954 VW split-screen camper to a Beetle to a modern T5. Eventually, however, there were four children and the Burrell family needed a larger vehicle.

When Buzz started to build the first retro motorhome, the two had the idea to turn it into a business. Inspired by the design of classic American RVs,  Buzz built an RV with four beds for the family and one to use for exhibitions and shows. He decided to use the long chassis of a Volkswagen T5 for it.

Each of these retro campers is individually manufactured make-to-order. Buzz and Marion discuss with the prospective customers about their requirements and they design the layout and floorplan afterward customized with the colors and materials required by the customer. Retro Campers: The Shasta Airflyte

An exact replica of their 1961 model Shasta Airflyte, manufactured of course by Shasta RV: the colors of this limited edition are yellow, green, and red.

Most units are sold by 2019, but on this website and in Mount Comfort RV you can rent it or even buy it. There are some models but as it is a limited edition, they do not have this model currently in their manufacturing forecast for the future. Photography from shastarving.com

Retro Campers: The Gidget

Of course, that teardrop trailers cannot be dismissed from the Retro Camper’s game. From the many beautiful retro campers in the teardrop family, I selected this one.

The reason to select this one is the expandable slide that practically doubles the available space in the cabin and duplicates the floorplan. In the open back, as with all teardrops, there is a fully-fledged kitchen, a skylight in the roof, a solar panel and it can host an air conditioner unit as well.   Photo:   thegidget.com.au

Retro Campers: Winnebago Brave

I decided to introduce also to the readers, this motorhome. Class A RVs are here included informally into the category of retro campers. This iconic brand Winnebago has recently showcased these Brave models, that preserve the vintage flavor with honor.

Retro Campers: The CH

Due to its weight of about 1210 pounds, it can be towed by almost any vehicle so not too many worries about the towing capacity . It is also very short, as it measures only ten feet long.

This top RV in our retro campers list is quite cheap and offers the possibility of buying it without any appliances, which provides you a free ground for remodeling and customization as you find it suitable.

Retro Campers: Meet The Dub Box

No, this is not a VW, remain calm. This is called the Dub Box, completely made in the United States. Manufactured with fiberglass, therefore, easy to tow and lightweight. It has that VW vintage design, but Volkswagen is unrelated to this project.

Retro Campers For Sale: The  T@B Teardrop

Another teardrop trailer to show. They are the new trend for a couple of years ago. Teardrop trailers are easy to two because of their lightweight. Nevertheless. they encompass many attributes that you also find in large RVs: you will be able to install an RV air conditioner, a convertible bed, a kitchen, and a wet bath as well. However, most of the activities will be done outside the teardrop trailer. Therefore they are probably not the best option in winter.  Photo:  tab-rv.com 

Retro Travel Trailers: The Happier Camper HC1

The Happier Camper model is for me the most beautiful of this retro campers list. I updated the article with new models, but I have not changed my preference.

This style is called egg-style and Casita has also some models like this one. It is lightweight with 1114 pounds of dry weight. Therefore the towing capacity of your vehicle should not be a problem as it can be towed also with small vehicles without too much capacity. Photography from:  happiercamper.com

Retro Campers: The Airstream Bambi Sport 16′

Of course that in any list of retro campers there must be always an Airstream model. I could have selected many of these retro travel trailers , but I have selected the Airstream Bambi Sport 16. This retro travel trailer is suitable for two people, maximum of three.

Retro Travel Trailers: The Egg Camper

There are dozens of beautiful egg-type retro campers that we could have included in this list. We have requested to include more Casita models in our articles and we just refer to them in an article about tiny RVs.

Apart from the Happier Camper HC1 depicted above, and the U-Haul/Casita model, all these egg campers look very much alike, despite being all of them proud representatives of the retro travel trailers category.

The model finally selected is the one below from Egg Camper . It is lightweight and made with fiberglass. Even with the improvement in the materials, the outside part has not received many design modifications and that is why they have conserved this typical charm of the vintage and retro campers.  Photo:   eggcamper.com

The Serro Scotty

The photography below is from   Kerola’s Campers  . This is another iconic model. The Scotty models dazzled everyone in the sixties and seventies. Now they are back and sold out. Yes, they sell through their dealers. Normally it is very difficult to find a new Serro Scotty.  In any case, forget the old Scotty models: these are built with better materials, fifty years later and will save you precious time. Forget any RV restoration and go camping with a Serro Scotty.

‘F’

Electric trams appeared in Moscow in 1899, but the most popular of the first models was created in 1908. It was the model ‘F’ (‘Fonarny’, “The one with a lantern”), a motor carriage produced in St. Petersburg. The name comes from a special build-up with glass units on the roof. It served to let additional light from the street inside the carriage and was commonly called a ‘lantern’. The chassis of the ‘F’ was wooden with a steel coating. The carriage had no doors and passengers often hopped on and off while it was going through turns at minimum speed. The ‘F’ also operated with a motor engine with several attached modifications and was only taken out of service in Moscow in the 1950s.

‘RVZ-6’

The ‘RVZ-6’ was a special case: This successful model had spread all over the USSR and was in use for decades, but it was still considered really exotic in Moscow. The reason was that the capital had chosen the ‘Tatra’ trams (see below) instead of this one. The ‘RVZ-6’ was designed in Riga in the Soviet Republic of Latvia. From 1960, its mass production had continued for practically 30 years - the Latvian engineers did everything to update the construction. The ‘RVZ-6’ had a light body made of aluminium sheets riveted together. Also, it had a driving system with pedals, which was quite unusual for trams. As Moscow underestimated this model, it was only used there in 1960-1966 and then, all eight carriages were given to Tashkent in the Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan.

‘Tatra T2’

The ‘Tatra’ tram was inspired by a U.S. model and produced from the 1950s in Czechoslovakia under a license. A modified ‘Tatra T2’ first appeared in Moscow in 1959. It was the beginning of a new era in the history of Moscow trams. It was much more convenient than any other Soviet model: the driver had a comfortable seat and the carriage was equipped with resilient wheels, instead of full-metal ones - the ‘Tatra T2’ passed through the streets without making a loud noise. All the carriages of this modification also had an improved winter heating system. On top of that, the recognizable design of the model didn’t resemble any other trams. The ‘Tatra T2’ was taken out of service in 1981 and replaced by the next generation - the ‘Tatra T3’, which wasn’t less successful.

‘AMO-4’

The first buses that appeared in Moscow in 1922-1924 were imported from England, but Soviet engineers quickly designed a local model. This was the ‘AMO-4’, named after the AMO plant (“Automobile Society of Moscow”). The name of the model also actually stands for bus chassis and had two body modifications. The second had a fourth door at the back, so it could be turned into an ambulance. The chassis was improved, too: It was made of boards instead of beams and became more flexible, so the bumpy Moscow pavings didn’t wear it out too fast. 

‘ZIS-8’

In the 1930s, the AMO plant was renamed in honor of Iosif Stalin, so its new common abbreviation was ZIS (‘Zavod imeni Stalina’, “Plant named after Stalin”). After this, engineers designed a new bus called ‘ZIS-8’. It was based on an American bus model, which was significantly altered: the construction was made simpler and the front brakes were made more reliable. Like the ‘AMO-4’, the ‘ZIS-8’ had a small window to display the route number above the windscreen. At the sides of the window there were two lamps showing the color code of the route to make it recognizable from a distance - an idea borrowed from the tram system. The ‘ZIS-8’ had turned out to be convenient and easy to produce, so it was used in other cities of the USSR and even made for export. ZIS then began to design many bus modifications.

‘LiAZ-677’

One of the next greatest hits among Moscow buses was first designed in 1962 at a plant in Likino-Dulyovo, Moscow Region. It was called ‘LiAZ-677’ and was actually used all over the USSR. Appearing in 1967 in Moscow for the first time, the ‘LiAZ-677’ was in operation until the 2000s. This bus had a flexible suspended span based on pneumo cylinders, so people started calling the ‘LiAZ-677’ a ‘lunokhod’ (“lunar rover”). The motor was placed in the front part of the chassis and the exhaust gas pipe went under the floor - this construction solution also heated the compartment. However, as this system got old, it started filling the bus with the smell of the exhaust gas. The ‘LiAZ-677’ is also remembered for its shaky motion and specific sound of its worn parts, which resembled the tinkling of empty bottles.

‘Ikarus-180’

The ‘Ikarus’ buses from Hungary were very popular in the USSR. They started appearing at the end of the 1960s, but only the biggest models were operating in Moscow. One of them was the ‘Ikarus-180’ - the first stretch bus in the Soviet Union. It just had 37 seats, but could carry 169 passengers in total, thanks to its two-section construction. The center of the ‘Ikarus-180’ made the Soviets nickname this model ‘garmoshka’ (“accordion”) or a “vacuum cleaner”. Also, its diesel engine was a sensation on the back of other Soviet buses that had petrol fuel-hungry motors. Later, the ‘Ikarus-180’ became the basis for the improved ‘Ikarus-280’ model.

Trolleybuses

Moscow saw its first trolleybuses in 1933. The model was called ‘LK’ after Lazar Kaganovich, who was the man behind the idea to equip Moscow with electric transport. The first trolleybuse of the capital had a wooden chassis covered with metal. It had two doors that opened manually by the driver and the bus conductor. The ‘LK’ was comfortable for passengers: there were padded seats with heaters and baggage nets. At the same time, the driver’s cab had no heater and the wooden chassis made terrible creaks during motion. In any case, this new type of transport gained a lot of popularity over the years.

‘YaTB-3’

Appearing in 1939, the ‘YaTB-3’ was the most unusual of Moscow’s trolleybus models, as it was a double-decker. It was the Soviet equivalent of an English model bought for the capital of the USSR in 1937. It fit 100 people inside, but wasn’t easy to operate. All trolleybus cables had to be raised a meter higher and the trolley poles (power collectors) of the usual models often lowered. The ‘YaTB-3’ was uncomfortable for tall passengers, because the ceilings of both decks were very low. Also, it was only possible to ride the second deck sitting down - extra standing passengers could alter the center of gravity, which threatened the steadiness of the bus. The number of these trolleybuses slowly declined until 1953, when they were finally taken out of service for good.    

‘MTB-82’

The ‘MTB-82’ first appeared in Moscow in 1946. It was quite different from previous models. For example, it had a universal chassis that could be used as a trolleybus, tram or bus. Its chassis was made of aluminium and covered with the same metal, so it didn’t make any creaks and was considerably lighter in weight. The doors didn’t have to be opened manually, as they had the pneumatic drive. Additionally, all the parts could be repaired easily. The ‘MTB-82’ could carry 100 people like the ‘YaTB-3’ and it also had problems with its size: it was wider than all the other trolleybuses, so the drivers often hit passing vehicles and lampposts.This is why the production of the ‘MTB-82’ was eventually stopped in 1961, but it was in operation until 1972, when it finally was taken out of service. In fact, nowadays, any trolleybus is a part of history - in 2020, Moscow stopped using this type of public transport and, in September of that year, a museum route was opened.
