One of the pillars of travel insurance is coverage for your rental car. Indeed, this is one of the most important areas to pay close attention to. Why? Coverages vary wildly — and you might not actually be getting the coverage you’re expecting. If something unexpected happens while you’re renting, you could be liable for thousands of dollars worth of damages.

The Capital One Venture X card confers excellent primary rental car coverage (in contrast to secondary rental car coverage). When renting a car for a period of 15 consecutive days in your country of residence or 31 days outside your country of residence, you can get coverage. Countries excluded are Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland.

Some exclusions apply, including expensive, exotic, and antique cars, cargo vans, certain vans, vehicles with an open cargo bed, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, limousines, and recreational vehicles.

In order to utilize this coverage, you have to decline the rental car company’s collision damage waiver (CDW), also sometimes referred to as the loss damage waiver (LDW), and pay for the entire rental car using your Capital One Venture X card .

To file a claim, you need to immediately call the benefits administrator at 800-825-4062 (outside the U.S., call collect at 804-965-8071).

You’ll need to provide:

  • A copy of the accident report form
  • A copy of the initial and final auto rental agreements (front and back)
  • A copy of the repair estimate and itemized repair bill
  • 2 photographs of the damaged vehicle, if available
  • A police report, if obtainable
  • A copy of the demand letter that indicates the costs you are responsible for and any amounts that have been paid toward the claim

Be sure to complete and sign the claim form that the benefits administrator provides and postmark it within 90 days of the theft or damage date, even if all of the other required documentation isn’t yet available.

You’ll want to also submit a copy of your billing statement showing that the entire car rental was booked with the Capital One Venture X card.

Frustrated man removing glasses

One of the core pillars of travel insurance is trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

If your upcoming travel plans are disrupted or canceled, there could be potentially huge financial implications. For example, if your airline becomes insolvent, and you have to cancel your vacation because of that, you’ll want to leverage your trip cancellation and interruption insurance, which typically covers unexpected events.

You can even use this coverage while you’re in the middle of your trip — it specifically relates to travel on “common carriers.” Common carriers are generally any model of transportation by land, water, or air operating for hire under a license to carry passengers for which a ticket must be purchased prior to travel.

The most applicable common carrier travel would likely be airfare, and the Capital One Venture X card covers up each insured person, so long as you charge the entire cost to that credit card. Your spouse and dependent children are generally eligible for coverage, as long as their trips are paid for on the credit card, too.

You’re generally covered if the interruption or cancellation is from the death of a family member (as well as accidental bodily injury, disease, or physical illness) or financial insolvency of the common carrier.

Exclusions to this insurance include any preexisting conditions, injuries arising from participation in professional sports events, cosmetic surgery, suicide, declared or undeclared war, and more.

Trip delays are one of those unexpected annoyances that happen to travelers sooner or later.

Luckily, the Capital One Venture X card covers trip delay reimbursement for every purchased ticket on your card, so long as your trip is delayed for more than 6 hours or requires an overnight stay .

You can have up to 1 claim per trip only, and you need to purchase at least a portion of the common carrier fare using your credit card . You don’t need to purchase the entire fare using your credit card — award ticket taxes and fees count, too!

You, your spouse, and your dependent children under 22 years old are generally covered as long as all of their trip was purchased using the same Capital One Venture X card.

Ever wondered what happened to your luggage, only to find out that, just like a nightmare in a scary movie, the airline has lost your luggage?

Worry no further because you can use the Capital One Venture X card’s lost luggage reimbursement coverage to recover costs.

Technically, the coverage is for the difference between the claimed value and whatever the common carrier has reimbursed you already. If the common carrier hasn’t reimbursed you at all, you should be covered for the complete value of the baggage and its contents.

You and all of your immediate family members are covered, as long as you purchase a portion of the covered trip with your Capital One Venture X card; this includes award ticket taxes and fees.

Patient in emergency vehicle

The Capital One Venture X has a suite of travel and emergency assistance services that can connect you to local emergency and assistance resources 24/7, 365 days a year.

Remember, travel and emergency assistance services provide assistance and referral only; the cost of any services or goods provided is your responsibility and is not covered.

Some specific services include:

  • Emergency Message Service — Record and relay emergency messages for travelers or their immediate family members
  • Medical Referral Assistance — Provides medical referral, monitoring, and follow-up
  • Legal Referral Assistance — Arranges contact with English-speaking attorneys and U.S. embassies and consulates if you’re detained by local authorities, have a car accident, or need legal assistance
  • Emergency Transportation Assistance — Helps make all necessary arrangements for emergency transportation home or to the nearest medical facility
  • Emergency Ticket Replacement — Helps you through your carrier’s lost ticket reimbursement process and assists in the delivery of a replacement ticket
  • Lost Luggage Locator Service — Can help you through a common carrier’s claim procedures or can arrange shipment of replacement items if an airline or common carrier loses your checked luggage
  • Emergency Translation Services — Provides telephone assistance in all major languages and helps find local interpreters
  • Prescription Assistance and Valuable Document Delivery Arrangements — Helps you fill or replace prescriptions and transport critical documents that you may have left at home or elsewhere
  • Pre-trip Assistance — Gives you information on your destination before you leave, like ATM locations, currency exchange rates, and more

In general, the primary cardholder, spouse, and all dependent children under 22 are eligible to use these services.

Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. Refer to your guide to benefits for details. Some of these benefits are provided by Visa or Mastercard and may vary by product and depends on the level of benefits you get at application.

As a Capital One Venture X cardholder, you are automatically insured against accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while riding as a passenger in, entering, or exiting any licensed common carrier, as long as the entire cost of your fare has been charged to your Capital One Venture X card.

Exclusions include taxes, as well as bus, train, airport limousine, and courtesy transportation. Note that terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. Refer to your Guide to Benefits for more details. Travel Accident Insurance is not guaranteed. It depends on the level of benefits you get at the time of application

The exact process for filing a claim may vary depending on which coverage you’re trying to use, but the general process is usually the same:

  • Notify your benefits administrator as soon as you possibly can about your covered event.
  • Provide any preliminary claim information to the benefits administrator.
  • The benefits administrator will send a more complete claim form to fill out, as well as a list of documentation required.
  • Submit the claims and wait to receive the reimbursement you’re eligible for.
  • Follow up with the benefits administrator as needed.

The exact documentation you’ll need to collect will vary — for example, if you want to file for a car rental-related reimbursement, you’ll likely need to furnish items like your rental car agreement.

On the other hand, if you’re applying for trip cancellation or interruption coverage, you’ll need to provide the confirmation of the nonrefundable tickets on the common carrier.

In general, all claim forms must be submitted within 90 days of the covered event, even if all of the supporting documentation isn’t yet available.

Hot Tip: Keep as much documentation as possible, including receipts, police reports, email communications from third parties, and more.

The Capital One Venture X card has some of the best travel insurance a credit card can offer. This is on top of the other benefits you get, such as unlimited Capital One Lounge access , up to $300 Capital One Travel credit every cardmember anniversary year, cell phone insurance , and so much more.

In particular, the primary rental car insurance rivals the best that ultra-premium credit cards offer.

Although this card doesn’t have baggage delay coverage, emergency medical and dental coverage, or emergency medical transport and evacuation insurance, it has most of the features travelers are looking for.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa ® or Mastercard ® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Successfully Getting A Capital One Venture X Trip Delay Insurance Claim (Here’s How To Do It)

by Dan Miller | Feb 20, 2024 | Uncategorized | 6 comments

A few weeks ago, I wrote about filing a Capital One Venture X trip delay insurance claim . This was due to my son’s misconnect in Charlotte . He was scheduled to fly from Cincinnati to Baltimore via Charlotte on American Airlines, but his flight from CVG to Charlotte was delayed, causing him to misconnect in Charlotte. He was not able to make his connecting flight from Charlotte to Baltimore, though it’s possible if we hadn’t been proactive, he might have saved the trip !

Capital One Venture X Trip Delay Insurance Details

Here are a few details on the Capital One Venture X trip delay insurance:

  • You must pay for your trip with your Capital One Venture X card (paying the taxes and fees on an award ticket counts!)
  • If you have a delay of more than six hours (or an overnight stay), then the insurance kicks in
  • It can cover up to $500 for each purchased ticket
  • Only “reasonable expenses” will be reimbursed. This can include meals, lodging, toiletries, clothing
  • You, Your spouse and Your dependent children under twenty-two (22) years of age are automatically covered

a close-up of a credit card

Information Needed For A Capital One Venture X Trip Delay Claim

You can file and manage your claim over the phone, or online at https://www.eclaimsline.com/

I wrote in more detail about filing a Capital One Venture X trip delay claim earlier, but the basic information you’ll need is:

  • A copy of the detailed original and updated travel itinerary and/or the Common Carrier tickets
  • A copy of Your monthly billing statement (showing the last four [4] digits of the Account number) confirming the Common Carrier ticket was charged to the
  • A statement from the Common Carrier explaining the reason for the delay
  • Copies of itemized receipts for Your claimed expenses. For food expenses, receipts are required, however itemized receipts are only required for bills of fifty dollars ($50.00) or more per covered traveler.
  • Any other documentation deemed necessary by the Benefit Administrator to substantiate the claim

As far as I could tell from reading the insurance documentation, you do NOT need to pay for your incidentals / hotel / expenses with your Capital One Venture X card (just the original trip).

There was a question in the comments of the original post asking “ how do you get a letter from the airline that explains the reason for the delay ?” I didn’t know at the time, but it turned out that at least in my case, there was no need for any statement from the airline. I submitted screenshots of the AA app showing that he had missed the flight and needed to rebook, as well as screenshots from FlightAware

Capital One Venture X Trip Delay Insurance Resolution

And that was apparently sufficient. It took about 3 weeks, but I got a Capital One Venture X trip delay insurance resolution via email

a white text on a white background

And that was that. I went online, put in my ACH information and the money was in my account a few days later. I also got a phone call from the claims people letting me know that my claim was approved. The additional call was unnecessary but a nice touch.

The Bottom Line

KEY LINK – card_name   – bonus_miles_full . annual_fees

Capital One Venture X trip delay insurance is one of the reasons I think the Venture X card is the best premium / luxury card out there. As long as you pay for the trip with your Venture X card, you’re covered for up to $500 per ticket for meals, lodging and other incidental travel expenses if your flight is delayed by more than 6 hours or you require an overnight stay. I just submitted my first Capital One trip delay insurance claim and am hopeful to be reimbursed for the extra meals and hotel I booked for my son.

Capital One. What’s in your wallet …. Well I hope for you NOT Capital One. Worst customer claim support. I got scammed by a hotel and not even denying a fraud charge for Mexico returned. WORST credit card.

charbel

so he missed the flight or there was a delay/cancellation from the airline?

Ken

What was your reason of delay? I think c1 accepts only a couple of reasons for the insurance to kick in. Mine was “operational” reason provided by the airline and c1 rejected my claim and cited their terms and conditions, which I find very limited. I think chase is more generous so I started using the Hyatt card because Hyatt card seems to provide better insurance than c1

Dan Miller

I don’t remember specifically but it was something related to the fact that his initial flight was delayed which made him miss his connection. It wasn’t anything special. It surprises me that Capital One would reject a claim like you said. What were the details of what happened?

So the airline said the delay was due to operational reason on the letter they provided, which I had to submit as a part of the process. Then c1 replied and said the terms and conditions allow for reasons only for equipment failure, inclement weather, strike or hijacking. They quoted the guide to benefits as it lists these three as the only delay reasons. So I amd surprised that they didn’t ask for the reason in your case.

Please check page 16, covered hazard on guide to benefits. It lists only these as covered

Requires excellent credit

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has an excellent rewards rate, access to airport lounges and hundreds of dollars worth of travel credits that can make up for the $395 annual fee ( see rates and fees ).

To optimize the card, you’ll need to book on the issuer’s online travel portal. If that suits you, the card can stand up to the stiff competition in the market for premium travel credit cards. And despite its many features, the card is overall easier to understand than most premium cards, which can be baffling for newcomers.

You won’t get brand-specific perks, like free checked bags with a particular airline or a free hotel night at a hospitality chain, as you do with co-branded airline and hotel credit cards. But it offers the flexibility of the popular Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , while adding a raft of perks that just might give it the X-factor to make it your ideal travel companion.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Bonus miles on travel spending are expected for a higher-end travel credit card, and this one has those if you’re willing to use Capital One’s online travel-booking site:

Unlike some others in its category, this card is rewarding for everyday spending, too. It earns 2 miles per dollar spent on purchases outside those bonus areas. That’s an excellent rewards rate because so much spending falls outside the usual bonus categories.

If it’s your top-of-wallet card, you’ll rack up miles quickly even if you’re not booking a lot of travel.

Generous sign-up bonus

Sign-up bonuses can change over time, especially with travel credit cards. But the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has an excellent one: Earn 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

That's enough to cover the annual fee for nearly two years. The downside is you’ll have to put a lot of spending on the card first. Spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months is an average of about $1,333 per month.

» MORE: How to know if a credit card sign-up bonus is worth it

Airport lounge access

Besides access to more than 1,300 Priority Pass lounges , a somewhat common offering on travel cards in this class, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers access to Plaza Premium Lounges and full access to the new Capital One Lounges . As of November 2023, Capital One Lounges are open at Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C., at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and at Denver International Airport.

Besides Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders, authorized users receive unlimited access to both types of lounges. Many travel credit cards restrict lounge access to the primary cardholder. Up to four authorized users can be added for free, which is not the case for other premium travel cards.

Anniversary perks

Central to the value of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card are the annual credits, which have substantial dollar value.

Up to a $300 annual credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel.

10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary (equal to $100 toward travel). The first batch of miles comes when you renew after one year of card membership.

Those credits alone, granted each year, make up for the annual fee. That assumes you’ll use the Capital One Travel online booking service. More on that later.

Flexible redemption options

Capital One's rewards program gives you several ways to use your miles for travel — both travel you already paid for and travel you want to book:

Redeem rewards as a statement credit. Book travel however you want, then redeem miles for statement credit for some or all of the cost. Miles are worth 1 cent each when redeemed, with no minimum redemption amount required. Any expense that Capital One considers "travel" is eligible, including not only flights and hotel stays, but "rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and time shares," according to the Capital One website.

Book through the issuer's travel center. This online portal offers flights, hotels, rental cars and vacation packages. You can pay upfront with your miles, at a rate of 1 cent per mile.

Transfer miles to partners. Capital One lets you transfer your miles to the loyalty programs of a number of airline and hotel partners.

“Simple” and “premium travel credit card” aren't concepts that usually go together, since the typical card in that category is wildly complicated. But relatively, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is easier to understand than, say, The Platinum Card® from American Express . That card has a dizzying array of benefits, many of which aren’t super-useful to everybody or take an inordinate amount of effort to use.

By contrast, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card at its core retains the simplicity of the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card by offering a flat rewards rate on all spending and lets you use rewards to pay for travel.

It layers on airport lounge access and more rewards if you use the Capital One Travel portal.

The point is that someone willing to endure only modest hassle from their travel credit card can enjoy and benefit from the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . That same person might be frustrated by complex competing travel credit cards.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers additional benefits frequent travelers will enjoy. Some come because it's a top-tier Visa Infinite card.

Complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status. This is the top status tier at Hertz. You can get confirmed one-car-class upgrades, 50% bonus on Gold Plus Rewards points on qualified rentals, free additional driver, expedited pickup and e-return, and more. The status is typically reserved for customers who have 20 or more rentals in a year or spend $4,000. The status level is good through 2024, at which point cardholders "will be reverted to the level commensurate with Hertz standard usage policies," says the card's terms and conditions.

Trusted traveler application credit. A statement credit of up to $100 for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. The credit is available once every four years.

Cell phone insurance . This is for the primary cardholders and authorized users.

Travel protections. These include auto rental collision damage waiver , trip cancellation and interruption, and trip delay reimbursement.

No foreign transaction fees. Standard on travel credit cards and useful for overseas purchases ( see rates and fees ).

With annual fees, it’s all relative. A yearly fee of $395 is substantial, but other luxury travel credit cards have similar or even significantly higher fees.

A sampling:

U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card : $400 .

Chase Sapphire Reserve® : $550 .

The Platinum Card® from American Express : $695 .

Still, if the big annual fee bothers you, but you like aspects of the card, consider the original Venture card with fewer perks: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . (See a comparison below.)

Outside the Capital One family, look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with an annual fee of $95 . It’s versatile and valuable as a travel credit card.

Value tied to booking portal

Capital One Travel, the issuer’s online travel-booking site, has nice features, including predictive pricing models and tools to help customers get the best deals — including proactively comparing hotel rates against Expedia, Orbitz and other travel booking sites. It offers access to thousands of flights, hotels and rental cars, and features free price-drop protection, 24/7 alerts and the option to freeze a price and come back 14 days later to book it.

But this card’s value is so tied to that booking portal that it diminishes one of the main traits of the Venture family of cards: flexibility.

If for some reason you won’t use Capital One Travel for booking, the bonus rewards for spending on this card as well as the huge $300 travel credit are worth nothing to you. The card’s value proposition quickly shrinks. Some savvy travelers prefer to book directly with hotels, for example, which adds to their elite status with a particular hotel chain or allows them to use status benefits they already have. Booking through a travel portal can negate those elite benefits.

By contrast, the competing Chase Sapphire Reserve® also links the value of its rewards to its travel portal. Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are worth 1.5 cents each if used to book travel there. But an important difference: Its $300 annual credit can be used for a broad range of travel purchases, including taxi rides, campground fees and train fares. That travel can be booked anywhere, and the credit is applied automatically.

The comparable anniversary credit on the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , one that can be used more flexibly for travel, is worth $100.

Granted, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® has a higher annual fee of $550 .

Lack of familiar transfer partners

For travelers who like to squeeze every last drop of value out of loyalty programs, the growing roster of transfer partners of the the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is appealing. You can now transfer your Venture miles to more than a dozen airline partners — but none are U.S. carriers. While transferring miles to foreign airline carriers can bring outsize value for your miles, it may be overwhelming for those just beginning with transfers. It does offer U.S. hotel partners for transfers to such programs as Wyndham Rewards.

If you want to work all the angles, one of the aforementioned Chase travel cards might be a better choice: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® . You can move points to several useful airline and hotel loyalty programs at a 1:1 ratio. Partners include United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Marriott.

Chase’s transfer partners:

Aer Lingus (1:1 ratio).

Iberia (1:1 ratio).

JetBlue (1:1 ratio).

Singapore (1:1 ratio).

Southwest (1:1 ratio).

United (1:1 ratio).

Virgin Atlantic (1:1 ratio).

Hyatt (1:1 ratio).

InterContinental Hotels Group (1:1 ratio).

Marriott (1:1 ratio).

How it compares to the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Both Venture cards are general travel credit cards and come with the same base rewards rate of 2 miles per dollar spent. You can redeem miles at 1 cent apiece for credit on your statement against a recent travel purchase, use them at Capital One Travel or transfer to more than 15 travel loyalty programs. And both offer the same credit for applying for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. A third Venture card, the $0 -annual-fee Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card , is a less useful comparison ( see rates and fees ).

Is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card worth the higher annual fee? Here’s a quick comparison.

If you already have the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , you can also apply for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

The value of the annual credit for bookings at Capital One and the anniversary miles, if you can fully use them, pays the annual fee on this card.

So the healthy rewards and the perks, including airport lounge access, are essentially free. That makes the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card a contender for people on the hunt for a premium travel credit card.

Still unsure about whether this card, or any travel card, is what you need? See our best credit cards page for options across categories.

Hertz President's Club status : Upon enrollment, accessible through the Capital One website or mobile app, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Additional terms apply.

Fo r Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply .

This card earns bonus rewards in a variety of popular spending categories, including dining and travel. You can transfer points on a 1:1 basis to about a dozen airline and hotel programs, or you can use them to book travel through Chase at 1.25 cents per point. Annual fee: $95 .

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card provides excellent travel insurance benefits that could help protect your trips. Depending on how you travel, you might benefit from trip delay reimbursement, primary auto rental insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and more. 1

Let’s explore the Capital One Venture X travel insurance benefits so you can see how they work and when they might apply.

Key Takeaways

Primary car rental coverage, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursement, lost luggage reimbursement, travel and emergency assistance, travel accident insurance, additional card benefits, bottom line.

  • Credit card travel insurance benefits often have strict requirements for when they apply and how you can submit claims. It’s important to read over your card’s benefits guide to understand how each travel insurance benefit works, including whether you have to pay a deductible and how much time you have to submit a claim.
  • Most travel rewards credit card insurance benefits have a limit on how much you can be reimbursed for if you have a successful claim.
  • Credit card issuers tend to work with third-party providers who handle credit card insurance benefits. So don’t be surprised if you have to submit a claim to a company that isn’t Capital One, Chase, Citi, American Express, or another major card company.
  • While not necessarily related to travel insurance, the Capital One Venture X also provides other protection perks and benefits, including purchase security, extended warranty protection, return protection, and cell phone protection.

The auto rental collision damage waiver could reimburse you for car rental damages caused by theft or collision. This counts as primary coverage, meaning you don’t have to apply your personal or other car insurance policy before this coverage applies.

The Venture X rental car insurance can reimburse you for up to $75,000 and covers rental periods of 15 consecutive days within your country of residence or up to 31 consecutive days outside your country of residence.

You must use your card to pay for your entire car rental transaction and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver option or similar provision. This benefit isn’t available in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, or Northern Ireland.

In addition, this benefit doesn’t cover certain vehicles, including antique cars, cargo vans, trucks, motorcycles, limousines, recreational vehicles, and more.

This insurance could cover up to $2,000 per insured person (which could include you, your spouse, and your children) for nonrefundable common carrier tickets, such as nonrefundable flights.

You must charge the entire cost of your trip to your card for this benefit to apply. In addition, this benefit only applies if the trip is canceled or interrupted because of one of the following situations:

  • A death, accidental bodily injury, disease, or physical illness of you or an immediate family member.
  • Default of the applicable common carrier because of financial insolvency, such as the airline you booked through declaring bankruptcy.

If you’re delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay, the trip delay benefit could cover up to $500 for each purchased ticket on a covered trip for reasonable expenses made with your card.

Reasonable expenses could include meals and lodging. Toiletries and/or clothing might also count. You and your family (spouse and children under age 22) are covered if you paid for your fares using your card.

You and your immediate family members could receive up to $3,000 in reimbursement each if your checked and/or carry-on luggage (or its contents) is lost due to theft or misdirection by an airline.

This coverage only applies if you paid for your fares using your applicable credit card. Lost luggage reimbursement doesn’t cover the loss or theft of certain items, including contact lenses, eyeglasses, sunglasses, money, documents, cameras, sporting equipment, perfume, keys, automobiles, and more.

If you need help while traveling, travel and emergency assistance services are available 24/7 and could help connect you with applicable emergency and assistance resources..

The card benefits team can help you find these services:

  • Emergency message service
  • Medical referral assistance
  • Legal referral assistance
  • Emergency transportation assistance
  • Emergency ticket replacement
  • Lost luggage service locator
  • Emergency translation services
  • Prescription assistance and valuable document delivery arrangements
  • Pre-trip assistance

Note that this is a service and not coverage that’s going to cover the cost of any local resource you might end up using. For example, it’s free to have the card benefits team put you in contact with an English-speaking doctor in another country, but any costs associated with employing the services of said doctor are your responsibility.

As the cardholder, you and your spouse and children under age 22 can use the travel and emergency assistance services benefit.

You could receive up to $1,000,000 in travel accident coverage if you paid your fare with your credit card. This coverage insures you against accidental loss of life, limb, sight, speech, or hearing while riding as a passenger in or entering or exiting any licensed common carrier. A common carrier could include any applicable land, water, or air transportation.

This benefit is provided to you as the Capital One Venture X cardmember, not to your spouse or children, though authorized users typically receive their own benefits. If loss of life occurs, the benefit is paid to the first surviving beneficiary in this order:

  • Your spouse
  • Your children
  • Your parents
  • Your siblings
  • Your estate

The Capital One Venture X Visa Infinite card also provides other types of protection benefits in addition to its travel insurance coverage and services.

Purchase security

Purchase security is a type of protection is eligible items recently purchased in the last 90 days with your applicable card. It can cover damage or theft of up to $10,000 per eligible item and up to $50,000 per card account.

This purchase protection benefit could apply if you shatter a newly-purchased tablet on the ground or if you’re traveling and your new phone is stolen.

But purchase security doesn’t cover antique or collectible items, animals, computer software, medical equipment, cash, credit or debit cards, or used items.

Extended warranty protection

Many items come with a manufacturer’s warranty that can help protect your purchase for a certain period. This extended warranty benefit can extend eligible warranties on items by an additional year

For example, if an item has an eligible manufacturer’s warranty of two years, the extended warranty benefit would grant an additional warranty year. So your item would have three total years of warranty protection.

This benefit only applies if you use your card to purchase all or a portion of an item with an eligible manufacturer’s warranty of three years or less.

Return protection

Return protection applies when you purchase an eligible item, and the retailer won’t accept it as a return. You could be reimbursed up to $300 per eligible item and up to an annual maximum of $1,000 per card account.

For this benefit to apply, you must use your card to purchase an eligible item, and the retailer where you purchased the item won’t accept it as a return within 90 days from the date of purchase.

Cellular telephone protection

Cell phone protection could help protect you if your phone is damaged, stolen, or lost in a manner where you know where it is but can’t retrieve it, like a phone that falls off a cliff or into the ocean. This benefit can provide coverage of up to $800 per claim with a maximum of two claims and $1,600 reimbursement every 12 months.

The cell phone coverage benefit only applies to cell phones attached to a monthly bill you pay with your card. This protection doesn’t cover most cell phone accessories, cosmetic cell phone damage, or prepaid phones.

What is the Capital One Venture X card?

The Venture X is a premium travel card from Capital One. It has a $395 annual fee, but provides amazing travel benefits, including:

  • $300 annual travel credit for bookings through Capital One Travel
  • 10,000 anniversary bonus miles
  • Airport lounge access for you and up to two guests to Priority Pass, Plaza Premium, and Capital One Lounges.
  • A statement credit of up to $100 toward the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Does the Capital One Venture X have purchase protection?

Yes, the Capital One Venture X provides purchase security for eligible items purchased with your card. Eligible items may be covered if stolen or damaged up to the total purchase price of the item — up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per cardholder. Some ineligible items include boats, computer software, antiques, animals, and medical equipment.

How does the Capital One Venture X compare to other travel insurance cards?

The Capital One Venture X has excellent travel insurance benefits compared to many other travel credit cards. But the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® generally has better travel insurance.

For example, the Sapphire Reserve provides primary car rental coverage of up to 31 consecutive days, whether you’re in the U.S. or in an applicable foreign country. The Venture X provides primary car rental coverage of up to 31 consecutive days outside your country of residence and only up to 15 consecutive days within your country of residence.

However, the Venture X provides a cell phone protection benefit, while the Sapphire Reserve doesn’t.

Capital One Venture X travel insurance benefits range from primary car rental coverage to travel accident insurance. And, in some cases, you can also take advantage of other card benefits while traveling, including purchase protection, cell phone protection, and extended warranty protection.

Keep in mind that these benefits only work if you follow the rules, such as correctly filing a claim within a given period. So it’s important to read over your guide to benefits to know the ins and outs of your card’s benefits, including the documentation you need to provide with a claim.

Capital One Venture X credit card review: Luxury perks for a reasonable annual fee

Emily Thompson

Editor's Note

Capital one venture x rewards credit card overview.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is the issuer's first foray into the world of premium travel rewards cards and knocks it out of the park. With an annual fee that undercuts the competition and plentiful perks that are easy to understand, the card is nearly a no-brainer for travelers ranging from luxury seekers to the more budget-minded. Chase and Amex, take notice. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

* Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

The Capital One Venture X exists in the premium space alongside cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express and Chase Sapphire Reserve® . Like them, it has some serious travel perks and valuable statement credits — but for a much lower annual fee of $395 (see rates and fees ).

As Capital One continues opening its own airport lounges , the case for the Venture X becomes even stronger. In addition to their first location at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and second one at Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport , they've now opened a third location in Denver International Airport . With the Venture X, you'll get complimentary unlimited access to these as well as Priority Pass's 1,300+ partner lounge locations for you and two guests.

If Dallas Fort Worth, Dulles, or Denver are your home airports, this may be all you need to know to make your decision. But if you are still debating whether the Venture X is for you, here is everything you need to know before clicking that "apply" button. You will need excellent credit for this card, so TPG recommends a credit score of 740 or higher.

Capital One Venture X pros and cons

Capital one venture x welcome offer.

The Venture X card's sign-up bonus is 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. The isn't quite as high as the offer was when it launched, but it meets our criteria for when to apply .

venture x travel delay

According to TPG's latest valuations , 75,000 Capital One miles are worth $1,388, thanks to the outsized value you can get from transferring Capital One miles to the program's airline and hotel partners.

And if you don't want to navigate the complexities of transferable points, you can use your Capital One miles directly for travel at a rate of 1 cent per mile — making the sign-up bonus worth $750.

Capital One Venture X benefits

  • Anniversary bonus: 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary, starting on your first anniversary (worth at least $100 toward travel)

Earning miles on the Capital One Venture X

The Venture X accrues miles at the following rates:

  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked via Capital One Travel
  • 5 miles per dollar on flights booked via Capital One Travel
  • 2 miles per dollar on other purchases

venture x travel delay

This simplicity builds off the $95-per-year Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees ), a product that has been around for over a decade. In that way, the Venture X represents the best of both worlds — high earning potential on travel purchases, specifically, but a solid everyday earning rate that's easy to keep track of.

Redeeming miles on the Capital One Venture X

When you're ready to redeem your Capital One miles, you have several options. If you want to get the most value from your miles, you'll want to take advantage of the option to transfer them to Capital One's 15-plus hotel and airline travel partners .

venture x travel delay

However, if you prefer a simpler redemption strategy, you can redeem your miles at a fixed value for any of these options:

  • Book travel: Book travel directly through the Capital One Travel portal.
  • Pay off travel purchases: Pay off travel purchases on your card statement without worrying about the complexities of loyalty programs.
  • Redeem for gift cards: Redeem your miles for gift cards across various retailers, restaurants and more.

Note that these fixed-value options will yield well below TPG's valuation of 1.85 cents per point, and we especially recommend avoiding the lowest-value cash-back option when possible. If you want to redeem your rewards for cash-back, you'll be much better off with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card or Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card .

The information for the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

For instance, TPG managing editor Matt Moffitt loves the option to transfer his miles to Avianca LifeMiles for premium-cabin redemptions on United to Sydney, as well as the ability to transfer them to British Airways Executive Club for nonstop domestic flights on American Airlines.

No matter your travel preferences, you'll be able to find some excellent value in Capital One's transfer partners.

Which cards compete with the Capital One Venture X?

With a $395 annual fee (see rates and fees ), the Venture X falls within the premium travel cards category . You might prefer a different premium card option if you're looking for different perks, such as more expansive lounge access or more flexible travel credits. And if you aren't ready to fork over a premium annual fee, you can get some of the same perks with Capital One's mid-tier travel card.

  • If you want more benefits: The Amex Platinum has more extensive airport lounge access and a longer list of benefits and perks that can easily offset the card's hefty $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ). For more information, check out our full review of the Amex Platinum .
  • If you want more travel and dining rewards: The Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn bonus points at similar rates to the Venture X when booking through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal , with 10 points per dollar on hotel and car rental purchases and 5 points per dollar on airfare. However, they also earn 3 points per dollar on other travel and dining, which beats the Venture X. For more details, check out our full review of the Sapphire Reserve .
  • If you want a lower annual fee : The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a much lower $95 annual fee (see rates and fees ) and offers the same great earning rate of 2 miles per dollar. It also comes with a credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. For more details, check out our full review of the Capital One Venture Rewards .

Bottom line

With simple rewards, impressive lounge access benefits and overall solid value, the Venture X has mass appeal, especially for those searching for a premium travel rewards card. In addition, there are a lot of under-the-radar perks on the card, including Visa Infinite benefits with an extensive list of trip, luggage, car rental and purchase protections. Add in a growing network of airport lounges, no-fee additional cardholders (see rates and fees ), Capital One's robust transfer partners and a luxury hotel program, and you have a card that is nearly a no-brainer.

Find the best credit card for you

5 best credit cards that offer pre-approval or pre-qualification in 2024, pre-approval doesn't guarantee approval, but it can help you avoid an unnecessary hard pull on your credit..

thumbnail

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

When you apply for a credit card, the issuer performs what is known as a hard pull or hard inquiry , which shows up on your credit report. Hard pulls temporarily lower your credit score, which isn't the end of the world, but it's better to avoid racking up unnecessary hard inquiries since they can remain on your credit report for up to two years. One way to do this is by going through a card issuer's pre-approval or pre-qualification process before applying.

Getting a pre-approved offer for a credit card doesn't guarantee you'll be approved, but it can give you a better idea of your approval odds with no hard inquiry. There is no impact to your credit score until you formally apply.

Not every card issuer offers pre-approvals. Below, CNBC Select details the top credit cards that generally offer pre-approval or pre-qualification and how they work. (See our methodology for more information on how we made this list.)

What's the difference between a pre-approval and a pre-qualification?

The terms pre-approval and pre-qualification both refer to the card issuers' pre-screening process that can help you determine whether you'll qualify for a credit card without a hard pull on your credit reports. Prequalified offers are typically initiated by consumers who want to check their approval odds, while preapproved offers are generally unsolicited offers from card issuers.

Does pre-approval or pre-qualification result in a hard credit pull?

Most credit card pre-approvals do not result in a hard pull of your credit. Some issuers require a Social Security Number (SSN) or the last four digits of your SSN to process a pre-approval, but this is generally done to verify your identity and shouldn't result in a credit check unless otherwise stated.

Does pre-approval guarantee approval?

If you qualify for a pre-approved credit card or receive a pre-screened offer in the mail, that does not guarantee you'll be approved. Your credit score, income and history with the card issuers are all taken into account, but won't be fully reviewed unless you submit a traditional card application.

Bottom line

Getting a pre-approved, pre-qualified or pre-screened credit card offer doesn't guarantee you'll get approved for the card if you apply. However, seeing whether you're pre-approved for a card offer is easy and typically doesn't require a hard credit pull. So it doesn't hurt to explore what offers you may qualify for.

We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, employee card fee, rewards, welcome bonus, introductory and standard APR and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks, the application process and how easy it is to redeem points.
