6 Questions About Botswana Luxury Safaris
Answered by
Anthony ham.
Why should I choose Botswana for a luxury tour?
“No other country does luxury safari packages quite like Botswana. A handful of high-level operators, usually with a strong background in conservation, share the market with independent safari companies. Fierce competition ensures places that don’t provide the highest standards of comfort, luxury and attention to detail simply don’t survive long. The overall offering gets better with each passing year, as each operator tries to outdo the others when it comes to luxury accommodation, world-class food, activities, and conservation credentials. The remoteness of so much of Botswana’s prime wildlife territory adds an additional charm to the experience. A touch of ‘the exclusive’ goes with the supremely comfortable accommodation. A real sense of personal service is another essential element in any Botswana luxury safari.”
What is included in a Botswana luxury safari?
“Most Botswana luxury tours offer all-inclusive rates. The details may differ from one operator to the next, but as a general rule the cost of your safari will include three meals a day, all transport, luxury accommodation and most activities. But the typical all-inclusive package does leave room for a few additional costs. For a start, the cost of flying into and between the various camps and lodges in the Okavango Delta and elsewhere is not always included in quoted safari costs. Some of these lodges and camps can only be reached via small plane. Ask your operator if you’re unsure about what is included. It may come as a surprise to find that you will not, despite the significant prices you’ve paid, have a safari vehicle to yourself and in fact will be sharing with other travelers. If you want a private guide and vehicle for your party, you will have to pay extra. Some of the more remote lodges and tented camps also have limited electricity, so do you really want the sound of a generator in the background? Many camps and lodges don’t have wi-fi. Beer and wine are usually included but top-shelf champagnes and other spirits are sometimes considered extras as well.”
Do luxury safaris always focus on the Okavango Delta?
“No. Many Botswana luxury tours do focus on the Delta though and with good reason. The Delta is one of Africa’s best places to see wildlife, and nowhere else in the country has the same choice when it comes to luxury camps and lodges. However, Botswana’s safari portfolio extends throughout the country. Chobe National Park is a vast protected area in the country’s northeast, and home to Africa’s densest elephant populations and some of Africa’s largest elephants. The park includes the wonderful Chobe riverfront (river-borne safari, anyone?) and the wild plains and swamps of Savuti. On the Okavango Delta’s southern fringe, Moremi Game Reserve has numerous luxury options. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the arid complement to all that water further north. Its golden grassland valleys shelter a handful of upmarket tented camps and lodges. In the country’s east, the often-neglected Tuli Block is another possibility.”
Can you describe a typical day on a Botswana luxury safari?
“Your day usually begins with a soft African voice coming out of the darkness to wake you just before dawn. You will often be served a hot drink and light breakfast snack, before setting out on a game drive or morning walk. The early start to the day happens with good reason: this is when most animals are active and easier to see. The duration of any game drive depends on what you see, you may be done in a couple of hours or five. Either way, mid-morning usually involves a return to camp for a more substantial breakfast, followed by time to relax as the heat of the African day takes hold. Then it’s lunch, followed by more time for relaxation (some luxury lodges and camps have a spa) or the journey on to the next camp. Afternoon tea is a noble safari tradition of varying formality depending on where you are. It occurs just before the afternoon game drive. At sunset, your driver will pull over and extract from the vehicle a cool box filled with drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic (a gin and tonic is the classic safari sundowner). A night drive may follow with a spotlight for seeing creatures of the night. Then a return to camp, dinner and perhaps some entertainment close to the campfire.”
What type of accommodation can I expect?
“The safari tent is the signature form of the Botswana luxury safari and is sure to be a highlight of your trip. Usually set atop a low platform, this canvas structure enables you to feel protected from the African wild yet be at one with it. You’ll hear lions roaring, elephants eating and all manner of night sounds. The typical safari tent has two main parts: the living area with a bed, writing desk and places to sit; and the partially separated bathroom area with shower and toilet. Depending on the remoteness of your camp, camp attendants may need to heat the water for your shower, so remember to give them a little notice. Most tents also have a deck where you can sit and admire the view. The other main possibility is a lodge. The best will be sleek-lined, stylish structures at one with their surroundings. Lodge rooms are usually larger than tents. Some are simply magnificent. Some camps even combine the two – a solid frame on three sides with a canvas front and/or roof. Regardless of whether you’re in a tent or in a room, you’ll need an escort to walk you to your lodgings after dark to make sure you don’t surprise any animals along the way.”
How much will this safari cost?
“As a general guide, luxury safari packages will cost around US$860 per person per day. But if you choose the most luxurious lodges or camps, the price can easily be twice that amount. Prices of luxury safaris in Botswana can go sky-high – there really does seem to be no limit to how much some travelers are willing to pay for their perfect holiday. It may cost more if you’re traveling alone: the cost of the single supplement is around 75% of the price for two people traveling together. The all-inclusive prices mean that additional costs are few. At this upper end of the market, the standard of accommodation is where you’ll notice the biggest price differences, although food is increasingly an integral part of the high-end safari in Botswana.”

Wild Kalahari Safari
Botswana Safaris are famous for having access to the most varied and abundant wildlife in Africa, offering some of the most unique and unrivalled wildlife viewing in the world. This famous country borders South Africa to the South, Namibia to the West, Zimbabwe to the North East, and shares traits from all of these countries. Your Botswana Safari will take you on a famous Okavango Delta safari most of which is nearby or centred around water, the rest is covered by the dramatic and remote Kalahari desert.
We realise the importance of having access to first hand knowledge as there are so many camps and lodges to choose from. For this reason we travel to Botswana between two and three times a year checking on our old faithful luxury safari camps and also seeing new camps. We catch up with old and new guides to ensure you have the very best throughout your holiday. Feel free to ring us anytime to pick our brains about a camp you’ve seen or have a look at our Botswana holiday ideas.
Luxury Botswana Safari vacations are one of the world’s greatest development stories as this country transformed itself in just four decades into a tourist destination for the discerning traveller, moving into the ranks of middle-income status and becoming one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
This magical country is dominated by the Kalahari – nights spent here are unforgettable, the dramatic ever changing landscape cannot fail to win your heart. The Okavango Delta is also the world’s largest inland delta and lies in the Northwest of the country, offering some of the most luxurious Botswana safari lodges in the world, as well as some spectacular wildlife experiences. The Makgadikgadi Pan , a large salt pan, also lies in the North and a few nights at Jack’s Camp is the ultimate way to unwind and experience true Botswana safari elegance.
The Limpopo River Basin, The Chobe River and The Zambezi River all touch the varied landscape, and the low impact high income strategy operated by Botswana’s tourism board means that over crowding is never an issue.

A STORY OF REMARKABLE RENEWAL
Xigera is our love letter to the magic of the African bush.
Through our video lens
Take a journey through our luxurious Xigera Safari Lodge... Situated in the western reaches of Botswana’s iconic Moremi Game Reserve, gazing out on the seasonal floodplains of the Okavango Delta, Xigera’s unique location offers unrivalled access to extraordinary safari experiences.
A LUXURY SAFARI LODGE IN BOTSWANA'S OKAVANGO DELTA
The story of Xigera Safari Lodge is one of renewal. Of rebirth and family legacy, and of the pioneering spirit that drives us to seek out Africa’s wild spaces. The same spirit that inspired this remarkable reimagining, perhaps a complete reinvention, of an Okavango Delta safari. This is Xigera (pronounced ‘kee-jera’), named for the Pied Kingfisher that makes its home amid the watery channels of Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve. Every aspect is handcrafted to beguile our guests’ senses and stir their souls – from the evocative interiors to one-of-a-kind encounters. But Xigera is equally a line in the sand. A raising of the bar. A bold statement in the realm of luxury safaris in Botswana, and an Okavango Delta safari experience like no other.
WILD SPACES, INSPIRED DESIGN

What to expect ?

Accommodation highlights
Selinda camp.
Located on the beautifully remote Selinda concession, Selinda Camp encompasses some of the most pristine wilderness left on our planet. Resting on the banks of Botswana's Selinda Spillway, as it enters the Linyanti River, Selinda Camp radiates the true spirit of Africa. This luxury camp offers some of the world's most thrilling game viewing, thanks to the private 130,000 acre Selinda Reserve, boasting huge herds of elephants, a large pack of African wild dogs and the famous Selinda lion pride.
Jack's Camp
Jack’s Camp is located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, next to the largest saltpans in the world. Set amidst palm trees, this remote camp aims to teach about the archaeology and anthropology of the area. This stunning location was discovered by explorer Jack Bousfield in the 1960s - a legacy continued today by his son, Ralph. Built in traditional, 1940s East African safari style, Jack's Camp is appointed with rich, Persian rugs and crisp cotton sheets.

Botswana is very much a year-round destination. The contrasting landscapes during the dry season (May-Oct) and the wet season (December-March) offer a completely different perspective and there are plenty of reasons to travel at both these times. Below is a short summary of what to expect at different times of the year:
July - October
December - march, february - march.
Visitor numbers begin to increase during May and June but are not quite at its peak. Temperatures are still chilly in the morning and evening before rising to a pleasant 24-28 degrees in the early afternoon – perfect for a serviced, mobile camping trip. Game-viewing is generally very good with elephant sightings around the Chobe National Park a highlight.
The peak season for Botswana when the landscape is at its driest and game congregates around the remaining water sources. Peak season also coincides with summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere which means availability is often extremely limited. If you are planning to travel over this time, we recommended booking 12 or even 18 months in advance.
A terrific month to travel (particularly early November) as prices are slightly lower, as are visitor numbers. Game viewing is still excellent and the first rains for the season come as a welcome relief for the wildlife. It is also fascinating to see the immediate change in the landscape when the first rains do arrive, as new grass grows and the wilderness starts to transform. Maximum daily temperatures are still high (around 35 degrees).
The wet season is in full swing by early December and this is the time of year when antelope start to give birth. It is season of plenty, when there is plentiful food, plenty of newborn antelope (that all birth at the same time to minimise the risk of losing young) and that means predators are on the on lookout. One of the key benefits over this period is that there are far fewer travellers, creating a more exclusive experience.
Another highlight that occurs, during February and early March is the zebra migration when thousands of zebras arrive in the Makgadikgadi and Naxi pans. During the wet season the pans are transformed from bone dry salt pans to shallow lakes and beautiful grassland. One of our favourite camps to visit during this time is Jack’s Camp a unique camp decorated in 1940’s campaign-style furniture.
A bit of a transition month between the seasons, April remains a relatively quiet month with most camps beginning to see a rise in the number of travellers.
Botswana FAQ
Can you see the big 5 in botswana.
Yes – however there is only a small population of rhino that were reintroduced into Botswana 20 years ago. The best location to see rhino is in Northern Botswana, in the Moremi Game Reserve .
Where can I see African Wild Dog?
Botswana is one of the best countries in Africa to see the increasingly endangered African Wild Dog. They can be seen in many of the reserves including the Moremi Game Reserve , Khwai Community Area and the Linyanti Concession.
Can I do canoe Safaris in Botswana?
Canoe, or mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) safaris , are one of Botswana’s specialties. Travelling down the waterways and lagoons of the Okavango Delta is a highlight for many visitors, giving guests a unique way of photographing wildlife and birdlife.
What is the best thing to do in Botswana?
Abundant wildlife including big cats, small, ultra-luxurious lodges and diverse landscapes make Botswana one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. Unique activities including exploring the waterways of the Okavango Delta by mokoro (dugout canoe), walking with bushmen in the Kalahari Desert, and exciting 4WD safaris are all possible.
What is the Climate in Botswana?
During the winter months of May-August days are dry and sunny with average temperatures of 25°C. Mornings and evenings can be very cold. Daily averages begin to rise in September and October towards 33-35°C. Temperatures from November-April can be very hot, reaching above 38°C. December to March is when Botswana receives most of its rain.
How do you get to Botswana?
Unfortunately, there are not many direct flights into Botswana. Most travellers fly into Johannesburg in South Africa, the major hub for Southern African Safaris. From there, there are regular flights between Johannesburg and Maun, the Okavango Deltas major access point.
What can I combine Botswana with?
A landlocked country, Botswana is surrounded by a number of other safari destinations. Botswana can easily be combined with Victoria Falls , the stunning sand dunes of Namibia , cosmopolitan Cape Town or even a beautiful beach resort in Mauritius or Mozambique .

Botswana - Luxury Safaris
Stunning African safari adventure awaits in the south of the continent, one of the most fascinating places to see wildlife in its natural environment.
On a private four-wheel-drive game-viewing tour of Botswana, you will have the wildlife all to yourself. Imagine being ensconced in your luxury safari camp, listening to lions roar, staring into a campfire, nothing but a blanket of stars above. This is an African safari experience
you will never forget. At sites throughout the inland Okavango Delta, the different safari destinations to choose from is extraordinary. Safari camps and lodges here are some of the best. Within the reeded waters, grassland, and woodland of the Moremi Game Reserve, game drives lead you to the Big Five – lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos – as well as to multitudes of storks, herons, egrets, and ibises, particularly at Xakanaxa Lagoon. Below the Chobe River, which forms part of Botswana’s northern border, visitors visit Chobe Forest Reserve and Chobe National Park, noted for its variety of eco-diversity and a staggering number of elephant herds. Just to the south, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park delivers hippos, wildebeest, and zebras roaming the edges
of glistening salt pans. The Kalahari Desert is the second-largest in Africa after the Sahara, home to a number of game reserves over its 350,000 square miles. Wildlife capable of withstanding this sand-covered plain includes antelope, gemsbok, wildebeest, and kudu, along with lions, cheetahs, and leopards. As well as birds of prey, the desert is home to cobras and lizards – not to mention the sand frogs, which you will certainly hear from when it rains.

The official currency used in Botswana is the Pula. USD, Euros, UK Pounds and South African Rands are also accepted. Major international credit cards are accepted at most hotels and there are also ATMs available throughout Botswana, dispensing local currency.

Botswana shares the same time zone as the rest of Southern Africa, which is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) +2 hours, in the Central Africa Time Zone (CAT).
Can I use my credit cards in Botswana?
MasterCard and Visa (both with raised credit card numbers so that an imprint may be taken) are usually accepted throughout Botswana, including Wilderness camps. American Express is accepted in some instances. However, Diners Club is not accepted.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1-3: qorokwe camp.
The variety of habitats in the Qorokwe Concession allows for good concentrations of larger predators – lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, cheetah and wild dog – as well as herbivores such as giraffe, buffalo, lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant. The pristine floodplains are home to curious red lechwe and gnarled buffalo bulls, whence the name Qorokwe is derives: “The place where the buffalo broke through the bush into the water”. Aside from the buffalo, elephant are a feature of this classic Okavango Delta Setting.
Qorokwe Camp combines a contemporary style with a classic bush feel. Its eight tented suites (as well as one very spacious family unit with its own splash pool) are well shaded and catch the prevailing breeze. The whole camp, including the magnificent main area, overlooks a lagoon and its infinity pool is a focal point for the expansive views.
This camp can accommodate 20 guests in canvas tented accommodation on a raised wooden deck and sandy pathways on the ground. Each tent comprises en-suite facilities with separate toilet, indoor shower with an inward opening door which gives the illusion of an outdoor shower experience, indoor bath, double vanity basin, private viewing deck with outdoor seating area, indoor lounge area, luggage rack, mosquito screen sliding doors and mosquito net, writing desk and chair, tea and coffee making facilities, electronic safe, multi-plug adaptor with USB points, an umbrella, yoga mat, weights and hairdryer. There is also a two-bedroom family unit, with a total of four three quarter beds (two beds per room) a fireplace, a dining table and plunge pool. Lounge area and deck are shared while each room has a separate en-suite bathroom.
The activities on offer at Qorokwe camp include: day and night game drives, mokoro and boat trips (dugout canoe and motorised boat, water levels permitting), guided nature walks (season dependant for safety) and optional scenic helicopter flights (at an additional cost).
Day 4-6: Little Vumbura
The annually flooded grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as ‘melapo’ and offer good seasonal viewing of elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Hippo and crocodile are common in the waterways. Predators include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round.
Little Vumbura has six beautiful tented rooms, each with views over the waving grasses of the surrounding floodplains. A pool and reading area overlook the floodplains and a star deck leads off the dining area.
This camp can accommodate 12 guests in canvas tented accommodation on a raised wooden deck, with sandy pathways on the ground. Each tent is landscape shaped offering views of the surroundings and has en-suite facilities (one unit has an indoor shower and outdoor bath), separate toilet, sunken indoor lounge area, easy chairs, mosquito net, tea and coffee making facilities (hot water will be provided in the morning or on request), an electronic safe, Olympus equipment (includes a camera and a pair of binoculars), a yoga mat, weights (2 x 1 kg and 2 x 2 kg weights) and resistance bands. One tent being a family tent with two three quarter beds in each bedroom (consisting of two inter-leading rooms, with their own bathroom and entrance, sharing a deck). While the main bedroom can be converted into a king-size bed, the second bedroom is a permanent twin.
The activities on offer at Little Vumbura are diverse and include: Day and night game drives in 04 x 10-seater open 4×4 Land Cruisers, night drives only possible in low flood. Water-based activities in 06 x 2-seater mekoro and 02 x 8-seater and 02 x 6-seater motorized boats (water levels permitting). Guided nature walks, on request, seasonal and subject to the availability of a qualified walking guide. And fishing on a catch and release basis (season dependent). Optional activities at an additional cost include helicopter flights and hot air ballooning.
Day 7-8: San Camp
San Camp is situated on the edge of the vast and mysterious Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, the remnant of an extinct super lake that once covered most of Botswana. Whilst they may look empty, the pans are home to unique desert wildlife including ostrich, lion, brown hyena and, of course, the cheeky meerkats. You can forget the tourist crowds and over-stuffed 4x4s too; it’s just you, the wildlife, and a handful of local San Bushmen, waiting to share their secrets with you.
San Camp has 5 twin and 2 double tents all with ensuite bathrooms, indoor showers and large verandas. The tents are spacious, stylish and have solar lighting (ceiling & bedside lights). Think enormous four-posters, draped in crisp cotton and feather-soft blankets, raised high above Persian rugs. Mahogany writing desks and leather armchairs contrast the rugged surroundings, and there’s a lazy day bed just outside, perfect for an afternoon of view-gazing. Ensuite bathrooms have hot, running water showers and flush loos, and there’s plenty of water in the elegant copper jugs and basins. The entire camp runs on solar-power and when darkness falls, you’ll find lanterns scattered around to light the way.
Gather in the splendid mess tent for a three-course feast, accompanied by white linen and crystal glasses. The mess tent also contains a small natural history museum and library. The tea tent, spread with cushions, is a tranquil sanctuary as is the tented yoga pavilion and plunge pool. While the camp remains perfectly off-grid, wifi is now available in the pool pavilion for guests.
Activities at San Camp include: Meet the habituated meerkats, walks with the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen, search for the elusive brown hyena, game drives and night drives, Helicopter flips (extra cost), morning and afternoon horse rides, (extra cost), quad biking (2 guests per quad bike, weather dependent).

The Best Luxury Safari Lodges in Botswana
Whether visiting the flats of the Okavango Delta in the east, the Linyanti marshes in the west or the vast Makgadikgadi Pan , Botswana ’s kaleidoscope of contrasting landscapes will imprint on your soul. With the largest population of elephants in Africa and one of the lowest densities of human inhabitants in the world, the only sounds you hear at your Botswana luxury safari lodge might be an elephant trumpeting in the distance, warning off an approaching buffalo. While the elephants are the stars, keep your eyes peeled for the supporting cast including the rest of the Big Five.
Each of our top selections for best Botswana safari lodges has been carefully considered, not just for their luxurious offerings, warm hospitality, and exceptional game viewing and guiding, but for their commitment to protecting wildlife and the land they roam.
The Best Luxury Safari Lodges in Botswana’s Okavango Delta
Water flows from the Angola highlands feeding the Okavango River, flooding the semi-arid Kalahari between June and August, taking hold of the waters and creating a unique ecosystem hosting some of the world’s most endangered species of large mammals. Recognized by UNESCO for the outstanding universal value the seasonal flooding provides, the Delta is an opportunity for guests staying in some of the best safari lodges in Botswana to explore an array of wet and dry camps boasting elephant, lion, hippo, and oh so much more.
Discover what some say is the best year-round game-viewing destination in Botswana. Spend your days observing predator-prey interaction dominated by big cats—from the ground, on the water, or in the air—on a variety of safari experiences. On your return to Mombo Camp , your wood and canvas luxury suite is cradled in mangosteen and fig trees with breezy openings to enjoy broad views across the Okavango Delta.
Highlights :
- Helicopter safari for a bird’s eye view of the Delta
- A traditional evening of African song and dance in the boma
- Creative cuisine using indigenous heritage ingredients (like baobab fruit powder)
Best for : Travelers wanting a pure safari focus. Mombo is well suited to small groups, couples, and families. For a more secluded stay, sister property Little Mombo is ideal for exclusive use.
Vumbura Plains
Seated on raised wooden decks snaked by Delta waterways and hugged by seasonally flooded golden grassland, Vurumba Plains is an exceptional wilderness hideaway. The property is comprised of two separate lodges (North and South), each graced with just six suites and a spacious two-bedroom family suite. From your private plunge pool, outdoor shower or veranda, watch for bathing elephants, and otters swimming by. Aardwolf, pangolins, and lechwe—you may not know what they are now, but you will when you leave the stunning Duba Plains Camp . While on safari, keep your eyes peeled for some more well-known wildlife too. Blending into the landscape, each of the five bespoke suites at Duba Plains camp sit upon raised wooden platforms and boast a lounge area, indoor and outdoor showers, and a luxurious bath. Though the aesthetic harkens back to classic safari camps of the 1920s, modern-day amenities including an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system are welcome luxuries.
- Young Explorers Camp, blending fun with conservation learning
- Speed boating down the Okavango River
- Heli-safaris to appreciate the scope of the Okavango Delta

While on safari, you may spot year-round area residents including zebra, lion, and antelope. With luck, you’ll encounter a pack of endangered wild dogs. End your game drive with a sundowner, reliving your day over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres . Adults can luxuriate with a spa treatment using indigenous plants while young explorers enjoy the children’s retreat.
- Ten 1,500-square-foot Bush Pavilions and the 6,673-square-foot Jeffrey Kent Pavilion which comes privately staffed and guided.

Boat in when the waters rise or travel by 4×4 when the sun warms the land. Set beneath towering trees, the unique bird’s nest-styled gazebo on the edge of the pool is the perfect place to relax in nature and the extravagant wine cellar offers a wonderful variety of pre-dinner drinks. There are just five sumptuous suites; two luxury villas perfectly accommodate families and small groups.

Best for : Honeymooners, design lovers, and safari-goers wanting a water-focused camp to complement a land-based Okavango Delta experience.
The best luxury safari lodges in Botswana’s Linyanti Area
Water, water, everywhere…and, unlike the Okavango Delta, in the Linyanti region, it’s permanent. Because of this, the region is lush with riparian forests hosting a variety of birds. Even the famed baobab tree can be found here. In this watery wilderness, flora and fauna flourish with the region boasting one of the densest wildlife populations in the world, including migrating elephant, zebra, buffalo, and wildebeest.
Selinda Camp
Award-winning filmmakers and National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Dereck and Beverly Joubert designed Selinda Camp “to pay homage to elephants, what we have done to them, and how we should apologize in many ways.” Still, conservation doesn’t mean you have to forgo luxury. The eight individually decorated suites have large verandahs and spacious, elegant bathrooms. The thatched main areas are built on raised wooden decks overlooking the Selinda Spillway and feature pieces from celebrated wildlife artist Keith Joubert, the owner’s brother.
- The hand-built camp marries luxury with a Robinson Crusoe-type feel
- The real possibility of elephants swimming in front of the camp
- Supports the Great Plains Foundation’s Solar Mamas
Best for : Photographers and travelers with an interest in conservation.
Zarafa Camp
With each of the four, newly-refurbished guest suites resting on raised, reclaimed, railway sleeper decks, Zarafa Camp’s tents are luxury under canvas. Spanning 1,000 square feet and accommodating a bedroom, lounge area, and bathroom with a copper clawfoot tub, they’re some of the largest in the area. Expansive outdoor decking wraps around each suite offering guests a private plunge pool, outdoor seating, and a private outdoor shower. Enjoy sunset from a boat along the edges of the Zibadianja Lake with huge herds of hippo, crocodile, and other wildlife.
- A refuge for uncommon species, such as African wild dog, roan, and sable
- With a maximum of eight guests on property, service is ultra-attentive and personalized
- Lunch in the bush
Best for : Honeymooners and romantic couples celebrating milestones.
DumaTau Camp
Translated from the Setswana language, DumaTau means ”roar of the lion.” Listen closely and you may hear a growl in the distance, but that’s not all. Sit back and listen for grunting hippos, trumpeting elephants, and the impressive sounds of other wildlife. Elephants, though, are in the majority here. Nestled between two busy elephant corridors with nearly 30 miles of river frontage, guests watch great herds play while making water crossings. DumaTau’s eight spacious tented suites, each with a private plunge pool, are raised on wooden walkways mere steps from where wildlife wanders peacefully through camp.
- Al fresco dining and sundowners on a barge on the Linyanti lagoon
- Spa treatments at the Osprey Retreat
- Gathering at the floating fire pit which extends into the lagoon
Best for : Elephant lovers and romantic getaways
The Best Safari Lodge in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park
Jack’s camp.
With rugged, campaign-style furniture featuring strapwork and brass corners, the newly-rebuilt Jack’s Camp might bring out the Indiana Jones in you. At nearly 3,000 square feet each, the seven twin and two double tents are decorated with North African rugs and mahogany furniture. A drinks chest and an antique pool table in the mess tent complete the old-world ambiance. There’s no doubt you’ll enjoy the area’s wildlife which includes Kalahari lion, aardvark, springbok, and hyena. Jack’s Camp is located deep in the Kalahari Desert on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans . We like to pair it with a water-filled Okavango or Linyanti region camp so travelers can appreciate Botswana’s contrasting landscapes.
- Take a seat in the elegant Persian tea tent
- Unique activities like quad biking, horseback riding, and bushman walks
- Visiting charismatic habituated meerkats
Best for: Desert lovers; safari-goers craving a unique landscape alternative

Okavango Delta video
The best way of getting an idea what the Okavango Delta is about is by seeing some incredible footage from the area. View this video of Camp Okavango to experience one of the lodges and wildlfe in the delta.
Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Botswana. Today.
We so enjoyed the boat trips, big and small, the helicopter ride was the BEST and a must, and sundowners on the overlooking the delta were great.
As we were in our boat, just as the sun was going down, a male elephant came out of the reeds and crossed the lagoon right next to us - simply magical.
This area of the Okavango is stunning, with both deep water channels and open park-like grasslands with beautiful trees that go on forever. Watching the red lechwe fly over the water is grace itself.

From ultra-luxury safari lodges to mobile camps, andBeyond is renowned for creating exciting, authentic safaris that go over and beyond your expectations (pun intended!). Chobe Under Canvas is one such mobile safari camp, situated right by the river deep inside Botswana's Chobe National Park .
This might be considered a camp, but don't let that fool you. Your every need is taken care of, from the expected essential comforts include full-size walk-in tents (just five for an intimate safari experience), very comfortable beds with luxury linen, hot-bucket showers and flushing en-suite toilets. Food is expertly prepared over an open fire and served in a lantern-lit al fresco mess tent. Moreover, the camp is entirely solar-powered, which adds to the authentic African adventure atmosphere.

This mobile camp – relocated every five days – is ideal for experienced safari-goers looking for an immersive, adventurous bush experience. Camp Moremi is an effortlessly charming safari lodge and one of our favourite luxury safari lodges in Botswana. A classic safari lodge with thatched roofing, it has an elevated deck flooring and open sides that spill out into the Okavango Delta wilderness. And not to mention that the suites are gloriously enormous!
It's found inside the Moremi Game Reserve on the permanent Xakanaxa Lagoon (pronounced "Kakanaka"), surrounded by floodplains and woodlands of varying habitats. As a result, you can expect incredible safaris! On land and water, all year round, the game viewing, birding and general beauty of this magical place are all simply sensational.

7. Chobe Game Lodge
Chobe Game Lodge is one of our favourite luxury safari lodges in Botswana for its many unique features. First off, this is the only permanent safari lodge inside Chobe National Park. Therefore, this means earlier and later access than if you were to stay outside the national park. The safari lodge is total luxury with all mod-cons, including air conditioning in lavish, north African-themed suites and a variety of dining and sundowner settings along its extensive river-facing decks and boardwalks.
Another noteworthy feature of Chobe Game Lodge is its progressive environmental and social policies. Famous for its all-female guiding crew and electric safari vehicles and boats, the lodge also produces much of its own electricity and recycles its wastewater. So, with a clean conscience, you can enjoy exhilarating game drives and river safaris. And this area will certainly deliver on sightings as it's rife with elephants, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, lions, African wild dogs and the general game densities that rightly make Chobe one of the most famous national parks in Africa.

Chobe Game Lodge is great for families with so much on offer for children of all ages. It's also great for couples wanting some anonymity and downtime to contrast the intimacy and personal attention of the smaller, exclusive safari lodges in your itinerary. Enjoy a spa treatment and a romantic al fresco dinner for two after a day of game drives and river cruises while the children run riot in the young explorers club.
- The only permanent safari lodge inside Chobe National Park, and it's on the Chobe River, so you can't be better placed for a best-of-Chobe experience.
- A progressive safari lodge with an all-female guiding team using electric vehicles and boats
- Great for families with land and water activities for all ages
- Elephants, elephants and more elephants!
8. Little Machaba
As far as luxury safari lodges in Botswana go, Little Machaba casts a modest, hyper-intimate, ultra-light footprint. Four classic tented suites – enormous by any standards – comprised of two doubles and two family tents sleep a maximum of 12 guests. But that's the only part where "Little" applies. Every other aspect of this delightful safari camp is larger than life.
Deep in the Okavango Delta and surrounded by the 180,000-hectare Khwai Community Concession, Little Machaba is a veritable wildlife festival. As a result, it makes sense that the safari guides and game-viewing activities are the headline act. Elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards and African wild dogs lead an all-star cast of varied Delta wildlife and birdlife that will have you shouting "Bravo! Encore!" after day one.
Get close to Botswana's amazing wildlife, Image Credit: Machaba Camp
With such a light footprint, Little Machaba retains the adventurous spirit of an authentic luxury safari. It's ideal for couples, families and small groups wanting to connect with nature and Africa's incredible wildlife.
- Intimate, personalised and very special experience
- Eco-camp for an authentic safari and a light footprint
- Full-featured activity list with exceptional game viewing in the Khwai Concession
- Cultural village visits (usually the lodges are too remote), birding, game drives, night drives, and seasonal mokoro water tours on offer
9. Linyanti Bush Camp
If game viewing were star-rated, Linyanti Bush Camp would be a six-star behemoth. As it happens, this small, intimate safari camp packs just enough luxury and first-class service to make it one of the best luxury safari lodges in Botswana. The rest is dedicated to a first-class safari experience.
The Linyanti Marshes are the only permanent water source inside a private concession in the remote northwest of Chobe National Park. As a result, this is a best of all-worlds position to experience vast herds of elephants and buffalos as well as a variety of plains game, including lions, leopards, African wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles and rare antelopes. The birdlife is astounding, and with the full range of safari activities, your wilderness experience at Linyanti Bush Camp will be nothing short of sensational.
Unwind and enjoy the view from your outdoor bath, Image Credit: Linyanti Bush Camp
With its purposefully low environmental and social impact, Linyanti Bush Camp presents an authentic, complete safari experience suited to adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Families are well-catered for, and the intimacy of this camp lends itself to small group celebrations.
- A full range of safari activities, including guided walking, game drives, night drives, boating and helicopter excursions (seasonal)
- The Linyanti Wetlands, between Chobe and the Okavango Delta, is an exceptional wildlife area – even by Botswana's standards
- Small and intimate safari camp with an emphasis on personalised safari experiences
- Family-friendly and small enough to book the whole camp for a wow-inducing celebration
10. Khwai Leadwood
Khwai Leadwood is a finely tuned mix of adventure and refinement. On the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, the Khwai Community Concession sees the great game viewing of its neighbouring national park. It then raises the bar with additional safari activities and features.
One of the very few safari lodges in Botswana welcoming children of all ages, Khwai Leadwood offers walking safaris, day and night game drives, birding, and mokoro trips during high-water peak season. The wildlife in this area is phenomenal, with reliable sightings of elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, hyenas, rare antelopes and the full complement of plains game and nocturnal predators.
A great place for romance and wildlife sightings, Image Credit: Khwai Leadwood Lodge
Khwai Leadwood is an excellent all-around luxury safari lodge within a stunning setting. Welcoming children of all ages and with dedicated safari activities for them, this is the perfect family safari camp when visiting Botswana. Furthermore, the exceptional game viewing and birding also make Khwai Leadwood a great option for first-time safari goers wanting guaranteed sightings of, well, everything.
- Great safari camp for the whole family with a scenic setting overlooking the Khwai River
- Full range of safari activities, including bush walks, night drives, off-road traversing, boating and helicopter flights (seasonal)
- Exceptional service, food and generous tented suites
- Excellent first-time safari option with village visits and cultural interaction at this community-run concession and reliable sightings of big game

Why These Sustainable Safari Experiences In Botswana Are Essential For Any Nature Lover
A frican wildlife is hanging in a delicate balance. Recent decades have seen shrinking animal populations right across the continent. This is a pretty sobering thought, particularly if you’re contemplating a safari. Fortunately, luxury accommodations and amazing wildlife adventures don’t have to come at the expense of the places you want to visit. An increasing number of African lodges have started prioritizing eco-friendliness and many travelers have started paying attention to the environmental impact of their vacations.
There are few countries in Africa that can compete with Botswana for exclusivity and luxury, as well as abundant wildlife and diverse landscapes. With a population of roughly 2 million, Botswana is slightly smaller than Texas and slightly larger than France — yet an incredible 40 percent of the country is dedicated to parks and wildlife. Botswana’s government has decided on a low-volume, low-impact tourism policy, which means fewer tourists and a better-protected natural wilderness. In addition, they have dedicated their army to anti-poaching, which is an additional reason why the country is such a safe haven for wildlife.
Where you go in Botswana and who you travel with can make a real difference, both to the environment and to your experience and enjoyment. Let me share with you two of my favorite destinations in Botswana, three of my favorite sustainable safari companies to travel with, and some of my all-time favorite eco-conscious safari lodges to stay at in Botswana.
The Okavango Delta
A stunning maze of waterways and lagoons, Botswana’s Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s premier wilderness sanctuaries. This 6,177-square-mile wetland wilderness in northern Botswana is one of the largest inland deltas in the world and it teems with wildlife. You’ll find elephants, hippos, and crocodiles here, along with black and white rhinos, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, and rare antelope like lechwe and the super special but shy sitatunga. Predators like leopards and lions abound, and this is one of the best places in Africa to see African wild dogs. The Okavango Delta is home to over 1,000 species of plants, around 500 species of birds, 130 species of mammals, and numerous species of reptiles and fish — a real wildlife paradise. The Okavango Delta was voted one of the stunning Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013, and the following year, it was the 1,000th site to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Incredibly, at its fullest, the Okavango Delta is large enough to be seen from space.
Where To Stay
There are some truly special places to stay in the Okavango Delta; lodges that are synonymous with luxury, but are still deeply conscious of conservation and protecting the places in which they operate.
Wilderness Vumbura Plains Camp
Wilderness Vumbura Plains Camp is located in the far northern reaches of the delta. Two separate but linked camps, Vumbura has a total of 14 spacious, raised rooms, each with indoor and outdoor showers, private plunge pools, and outdoor areas from where you can watch a passing parade of wildlife. The grasslands here offer great seasonal wildlife viewing, and you can easily fill your days with game drives, walking safaris, and boating. Morning and afternoon game drives will bring you up close to thrilling wildlife interactions. Mokoro (dugout canoe) trips are also highly recommended and fishing during the annual flood season gives you the chance to pursue the highly prized tiger fish. Conscious of its ecological footprint, the camp is largely run on solar power.
Duba Plains Camp
Blissfully isolated and accessible only by air, Great Plains Conservation’s Duba Plains Camp lies on a 77,000-acre private concession in a particularly beautiful part north of the delta. Six vintage-style, luxuriously tented rooms built in the shade of tall trees overlook the flood plains. It features antique-style furnishings, oriental rugs, canopy beds shrouded in mosquito netting, and a climate-controlled wine cellar containing a few hundred bottles of wine. This is a special place.
Elephants and hippos frequently trudge through camp and the wildlife here is the subject of numerous award-winning National Geographic documentaries by founders Derek and Beverley Joubert — including Eternal Enemies which chronicles the battle for survival between lions and buffalo in the area. Duba Plains guarantees a memorable stay and prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences. In a commitment to the local community, Great Plains facilitates Kids Conservation Education Camps, educating local school children about wildlife and conservation.
Khwai Leadwood Camp
Set within a community-run part of the delta, called the Khwai concession, African Bush Camps’ elegantly designed Khwai Leadwood Camp is beautiful. It features six standard tents and a family tent, all tucked under trees on the edge of the Khwai River. The river is the only thing that separates the camp from the fantastic Moremi Game Reserve and wildlife like hippos, elephants, and even lions crossing the river from time to time. It’s an exceptional experience even for the most seasoned safari veteran. An additional bonus here is that guests can head off on night drives and get an up-close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and more elusive animals. African Bush Camps has a number of eco-tourism initiatives that operate in conjunction with the local community.
The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve
The 275,000-acre Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in the northwest of Botswana is a safari destination you’ve quite possibly never heard of. Nestled between the Okavango Delta and Chobe River, here, the Kwando River, Selinda Spillway, Linyanti River, and Savuti Channel create a system of river channels and floodplains. Hundreds of miles from so-called civilization, the Linyanti is one of the most game-rich regions in Botswana, known for its wild dog populations, lions, hyenas, elephants, and huge herds of buffalo. Most of the lodges here are accessible only by light aircraft.
Wilderness King’s Pool Camp
Tucked into a grove of giant jackal berry trees, Wilderness King’s Pool Camp has a vast private concession all to itself overlooking an oxbow lagoon on the Linyanti River. This river forms the border between Namibia and Botswana, and King’s Pool is right at the center of the important wildlife corridor in the reserve. The camp consists of eight spacious thatched-roof chalets set on raised decks near the water’s edge, all connected by raised wooden walkways to the rest of the camp. King’s Pool boasts a sunken hideaway overlooking the lagoon, which attracts an impressive array of wildlife and birdlife — especially elephants — who come to drink the water. Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable tourism, the camp is 100 percent solar-powered and wastewater is treated to ensure it’s safe before passing into the surrounding environment.
Selinda Camp
Located in the vast 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve, Selinda Camp is one of Botswana’s most exclusive camps and — with just three guest tents — one of its smallest. Selinda is Arabic for “beloved one,” and what’s not to love here? Enjoy game drives, walks, boating, tracking, and birding amongst some of the best wildlife Botswana has to offer. The nearby Selinda Spillway is home to prides of lions and incredible concentrations of buffalo.
The camp’s spacious, luxury tents sit below cooling thatched roofs and feature ensuite bathrooms and private verandas, each with a swimming pool. The camp’s main dining and lounge area has spectacular views out over the lagoon. Selinda is where Derek and Beverly Joubert filmed Birth of a Pride — a story of survival, of lions returning to an area where they’d once been hunted to near extinction. Selinda Camp has been named one of the world’s Top 100 Sustainable Destinations.
Linyanti Ebony Camp
At the heart of the Linyanti Wildlife haven is Linyanti Ebony , an intimate camp with just four tents — making it perfect, particularly for family-oriented safaris. Built on raised decking overlooking the Linyanti Marsh, this is an intimate camp with panoramic views of the incredible natural wetland surroundings. The camp’s design offers an eco-conscious base from which to explore this amazing wilderness and the main area encompasses a large lounge and dining area, perfect for al-fresco dinners under a star-studded sky.
Planning Your Trip To Botswana
It’s sometimes hard to know where to start when planning an African safari, especially if it’s your first time. Mahlatini specializes in sustainable safaris and has been putting together fantastic African itineraries for over 20 years. They offer an 8-night safari to Vumbura Plains, Duba Plains, King’s Pool, and Selinda Camp, with 2 nights in each camp. It costs $16,060 per person on a fully inclusive basis — including daily activities, international flights, and light aircraft and road transfers.
