The South Dakota Department of Corrections maintains a searchable public database of all of the inmates they have in custody.

In addition, the offender search contains information about prisoners, parolees, and probationers who are currently under supervision, and who have been discharged. It also contains those inmates who have absconded, or escaped.

The actual prison that an inmate is assigned to depends on factors such as security classification, remaining time of their sentence, gang affiliation, and location of their residence.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections began in 1881, when the first state prison, South Dakota State Penitentiary, was built in Sioux Falls.

Today the state of South Dakota's Prison System maintains 6 state correctional institutions.

With a staff of 775 correctional workers, as of the end of 2023 they oversee approximately 3,250 inmates , with another 11,000 on parole and probation.

The following will explain the instructions, tricks and hacks you can use to find any inmate in custody with the South Dakota Department of Corrections.

Once an inmate is convicted and sentenced for a violation of that state’s felony laws (and their sentence is more than one year in length), they are moved from the City or County Jail and sent to a State Prison in South Dakota. If the violation they are convicted of is a federal crime, they will be sent to a Federal Prison, but will not necessarily be doing their time in South Dakota.

South Dakota State Prisons are operated and maintained by the state government and are used to confine and rehabilitate criminals. State prisons are funded by state tax money. The fund is used to provide food and clothes to inmates and to hire employees to keep the prison running. Inmates in state prison enjoy certain privileges such as TV use and recreation, both indoor and outdoor. The number of privileges allowed depends on the security level of the prison, the inmate and the overall needs of the prison on a specific day.

South Dakota has minimum, medium and maximum security prisons. The Corrections Department in South Dakota also maintains low (or no) security residential settings and camps where inmates assist in state property maintenance and duties such as fighting fires. Almost all prisons provide ‘jobs’ where an inmate can earn a small hourly wage and even learn a trade. Some prisons even contract with call centers and handle phone calls on issues related to their state government. Criminals who have committed a violent crime or killed someone are likely housed in a maximum security prison. If the inmate in these prisons behave, they are also eligible to recreate and/or work as well.

In South Dakota Prisons rehabilitation is the stated goal but the reality is that they exist to punish inmates for their crimes and keep them from hurting or harming innocent people on the outside who follow the laws and live and act responsibly. The fact is that most prison systems are underfunded, overcrowded and are not able to spend time and money rehabilitating offenders. This is not the fault of the people hired to work in prisons, they are just victims of the lack of resources due to budgeting constraints.

State Inmate

Most states have Department of Corrections websites that allow you to type in a felon's first and last name and pull up inmates in that state.

If you need to find a sentenced inmate serving time in a state other than South Dakota, go here . To find an inmate in South Dakota, just scroll to the top of the page and click on the Inmate Search button.

Once you locate them click next to the inmate's name or on the link provided and it will show you which prison the inmate is housed in. If the inmate is no longer incarcerated, but is on parole/probation or discharged, it will tell you that as well. In addition, many state prison inmate pages show recent mug shots.

Federal Inmate

The federal prison system has its own inmate locator called the Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator.

Type in the inmate's name and it will tell you where he or she is incarcerated and their projected release date. It also lists released federal prison inmates and the date they were released.

Federal inmates who are moved from one prison to another will show as "No longer in federal custody" on the system until they reach their next federal prison destination. This movement can take a few days to several months to complete, so keep checking back to find out where the inmate was taken.

ICE Inmates

The ICE Detainee Lookup allows friends, family members and interested parties to locate illegal and/or undocumented immigrants that are in the United States without permission.

Has the Inmate been recently arrested?... Try a County Jail

In many cases, the person you are looking for has either not been convicted or sentenced or has been sentenced and is awaiting transport to a State or Federal Prison and is still incarcerated in a City or County Jail.

To locate that person, go here to first find the State , and then the County where they were originally arrested or have been transported to. From there you can begin your search in our databases that contain the names and information of millions of inmates.

Jailexchange.com has all information on every jail and prison in the United States.

Effective July 1, 2022, Face-to-Face Visitation will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and state holidays. The breaks between visits will be reduced from 30 minutes to 15 minutes.

The facility administration is to ensure that the visitation area is cleaned between visits and those inmates and visitors are positioned in the visitation room on time to begin their visits.

Beginning on June 22, 2022, the length of visits will change from 1 hour to 2 hours in the Visitation Scheduler and visitors will be able to schedule 2-hour visits for the weekend of July 2, July 3 or July 4, 2022.

The new visitation blocks are as follows:

  • 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Family & Friends of Inmates:  See the summary below for the new visitation process for face-to-face visitation.  If you are an existing registered visitor using video visitation. If you would like a face-to-face visit with an inmate in a VADOC facility, you must get approval through a visitation application with the VA Department of Corrections prior to scheduling a visit.

New to Face-to-Face Visitation in VADOC facilities:

  • The Visitor submits an application through the Virginia Department of Corrections' website using the following link:  https://vadoc.virginia.gov/families-friends-of-offenders/visiting-an-offender   NOTE : it takes 30 to 90 days for Central Visitation to approve a new application for the visitor. This process requires the Visitor to pass a background check.
  • Once reviewed, the Visitor receives an email from the VADOC stating approved or denied with reason.  If approved, the Visitor creates an account through VisManager ( https://vadoc.gtlvisitme.com ) to link the Inmate to your account.
  • Once the Visitor’s account is established, the account goes into “waiting approval” to schedule a face to face visit. However, you can continue video visitation through the process.
  • Once the Visitor receives an email from [email protected] stating you have been added as an approved Visitor, the Visitor may now schedule a date and time to visit face to face with the inmate. NOTE :  Non-contact visits are offered on Wednesday and face to face (contact) visits are on Saturday and Sunday.

If you are pregnant or have a medical condition that prohibits you from going through the electronic scanning device, you will need to bring documentation from your medical provider.

AFOI information:

In partnership with GTL and the Virginia Department of Corrections, AFOI – Assisting Families of Inmates offers two forms of video visitation: video visitation from one of 6 visitor centers located throughout the state using at-home video visitation. These services are available for all 40 major state correctional facilities. The cost for video visits using either method is $0.40/minute available in two time blocks—25 minutes for $10 or 55 minutes for $22.

VIDEO VISITATION FROM A VISITOR CENTER

Visitor centers provide a comfortable environment to video visit with an offender. These 6 centers are located in Richmond, Roanoke, Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, and Norfolk. This option for video visitation allows those who do not have the necessary technology at-home access to video visitation. Additionally, for those that want to visit with an offender who does not qualify for enhanced, at-home video visitation, this may be an option (subject to approval).

The application process for video visitation from a visitor center is separate from at-home video visitation and is coordinated by AFOI. To learn more or apply, visit the AFOI website , call 804.643.2401, or e-mail [email protected] .

AT-HOME VIDEO VISITATION

Enhanced video visitation using at-home technology enables visitors to visit from the comfort of their own home. Enhanced, at-home video visitation is supported on home computers (desktops or laptops), tablets, and Android smartphones. iPhones and iPads are not compatible for video visits, but they can be used for scheduling purposes.

If using an Android smartphone or tablet, you can download these two apps from the Google Play store - GTL - Schedule Visits (1 of 2) and GTL - Internet Visits (2 of 2) . You must download both apps in order to use enhanced video visitation on these devices. To register and schedule enhanced, at-home video visitation from all other devices, visit https://vadoc.gtlvisitme.com/app .

You can find more information in  Operating Procedure 851.1.

Visitors with Medical Conditions

If you are pregnant or have a medical condition that prohibits you from going through the electronic scanning device on the day of your scheduled visit, you will need to bring documentation from your medical provider. The documentation must confirm that you are unable to pass through the electronic scanning device due to your condition. An alternate search procedure will be offered to you.

For visitors needing accommodation to enter a VADOC facility with medication, you must obtain a doctor's note indicating that the medication must be maintained on your person. At least one week prior to the scheduled visit, you must contact the Facility Unit Head or designee to gain approval to enter the facility with medication.
