Steve Vai Unveils Massive Tour with Philip Bynoe on Bass

Kevin Johnson

Guitar legend Steve Vai has announced an extensive U.S. tour that will cover the nation over 54 appearances. The guitarist, who has been working on a new studio album, says the shows will present tons of new music with plans for performances to be staged over the next several years.

“A performer thrives on performing. It’s been my life for the past 49 years, with the exception of the last two years, so we are chomping at the bit to get out there and play for people,” Vai says. “A music concert has the ability to dissolve the many challenges we face, and celebrate one of the good things in life, live music.”

Vai will be joined by his long-time bandmates Dave Weiner, Jeremy Colson, and bassist Philip Bynoe . Check out Vai and Bynoe playing off each other in this clip:

LIVE REVIEW: Steve Vai Inviolate Tour North America 2023

The final concert of the Canadian leg of Inviolate Tour North America 2023 took place on August 15th in Vancouver BC.

Written by Arturs Feists

The large line that wound down the street for the length of the block indicated that this evening was going to be hot, literally and figuratively. Heated by the hot sun, the audience with ovations – without a warm-up band, welcomed Steve Vai and his bandmates – Dave Weiner (guitar/keys), Philip Bynoe (bass), and Jeremy Colson (drums).

During the first three compositions – Avalanche, Giant Balls of Gold and Little Pretty, people confirmed with continuous exclamations, applause and cheers – the audience is listening, and they are listening very well! The concert-goers were heated to the maximum – the heat of the sun, the sound of guitars and drums did their job. It seems that Steve Vai’s guitar would have nowhere to fall if he threw it into the audience – so many people had gathered to see the Canadian leg’s last concert. The songs changed one after another, as did Steve Vai’s guitars, but the audience’s attitude, response and appreciation remained constant throughout the concert. As Steve Vai himself said from the stage – let’s forget politics and celebrate great music together!

A total of 20 songs were played – songs from the last album Inviolate alternating with compositions from previous records. Classic hits from Passion and Warfare – Liberty and For the Love of God were also played at the end of the concert.

“My face has melted”: Steve Vai and Joe Satriani cover Metallica’s Enter Sandman during opening Satch/Vai Tour show – and give their first-ever collaborative single its live debut

After their own solo sets, the two virtuosos shared the stage to perform The Sea of Emotions, Pt. 1, and the Kinks' You Really Got Me – before wrapping things up with a wah-drenched cover of the Metallica classic

Steve Vai and Joe Satriani

Last November, it was announced that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai would be working on new music together for the first time – and they’d be hitting the road for a co-headline tour.

Commencing mere weeks after the pair concluded their G3 duties with Eric Johnson , the Satch/Vai Tour officially kicked off last Friday (March 22) with a show at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida.

The first Satch/Vai tour seemingly set the template for future shows, and loosely followed the same schedule established by the G3 Reunion format. Namely, each individual electric guitar virtuoso was granted their own independent set, before the pair shared the stage for the finale.

Thanks to some diligent gig-goers – and Satriani himself – footage from the evening has now made its way online.

Satch/Vai Tour 2024 Night 1 Recap in Orlando, FL - YouTube

For Vai’s show-opening set, Teeth of the Hydra , Tender Surrender , Little Pretty and For the Love of God all featured. Details of Satch’s opening-night setlist are hard to come by, but his set on the 23rd comprised the usual suspects: Surfing with the Alien , Ice 9 , Flying in a Blue Dream and more – it’s likely his Orlando set followed the same outline.

However, it was the encore that perhaps warranted the most attention, with Vai and Satch locking fretboards of their PIA and JS1CR30 Ibanez signature guitars for a three-song finale that comprised a cover of a Metallica track, a rendition of a Kinks classic, and the live debut of the pair’s first-ever joint single.

The latter song, titled The Sea of Emotion, Pt.1 , set the tone of the encore, and gave attendees an exclusive preview. No doubt dialed up for the live setting, the near-10 minute track saw Satch and Vai take turns noodling over a pensive progression, before taking a complete left-turn and dropping into a hair-raising, whammy bar-tinged riff.

There are some awe-inspiring harmonies and melodies in there, with that run at the 5:00 mark onwards in the video below serving as a particular highlight. It's clearly appeased fans, with one commenter on YouTube noting: “My face has melted.”

Joe Satriani/Steve Vai – “The Sea of Emotion Pt 1” – LIVE DEBUT– Orlando, Florida 3/22/2024 - YouTube

Set for an official release on March 29, the track is not only significant for the fact it’s the guitarists’ first-ever collaborative single, but also because it’s a nod to the pair’s past.

Vai and Satch’s shared six-string history is well-documented. They both attended the same high school in Long Island, for instance, and in the ‘70s Satriani famously tutored Vai on the guitar.

Satch addressed this tutor/student history while reintroducing Vai to the stage on the opening night: “I thought, ‘Oh, wow. This kid is going to be phenomenal when he grows up. I just have to civilize him somehow.’ I didn't.”

steve vai tour bassist

And, as the two guitar heroes once explained in an interview with Guitar World from 1990 , the Sea of Emotion marks an important aspect of that shared experience: it was the name of a place they both went to in New York. In fact, the pair had even earmarked “The Sea of Emotions” as a potential song title more than 30 years ago.

“I've always thought about doing a record with Joe,” Vai said at the time. “Right now, our careers just won’t allow it because we're so busy. But one of these days, when everything dies down, we'll sit down and do it.”

“When we've become totally unpopular,” Satriani added. “We'll probably get together. [Drops into old man voice] Oh, Steve, remember the old lick…” To that, Vai suggested they could call it “The Sea of Emotion”.

A cover of the Kinks’ You Really Got Me then followed, before the two brought the show to a close with a wah-drenched take on Enter Sandman . Again, it was another significant inclusion to the setlist, given the fact Satch had also once taught guitar to Kirk Hammett.

Joe Satriani/Steve Vai – “You Really Got Me” – Live – Orlando, Florida 3/22/2024 - YouTube

“Thank you Orlando!” Satriani wrote on Instagram after the show. “The Satch/Vai Tour has officially taken flight.”

The Satch/Vai Tour is scheduled to continue tonight (March 25) at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida.

Steve Vai & Joe Satriani Tour happening!

For the first time ever, after more than 50 years of friendship, it’s the Satch-Vai 2024 Tour! Believe it not, this is the first time Joe and Steve will tour as a duo-bill, and it comes along with plans to release a new musical collaboration.

“The Satch/Vai Tour is happening! I’m so looking forward to sharing the stage with Steve again. Every time we play together it takes me back to when we were teenagers, eating and breathing music every second of the day, pushing, challenging and helping each other to be the best we could be. I guess we’ve never stopped!” – Joe “Touring with Joe is always a pleasure and an honor. He is my favorite guitarist to jam with, and now we have another opportunity to take it to the stage. I feel as though we are both at the top of our game and that the show will be a powerful celebration of the coolest instrument in the world, the electric guitar!” – Steve

Joe Satriani & Steve Vai, Legendary Guitar Virtuosos, Deliver Unforgettable Performance at The Beacon Theatre

steve vai tour bassist

Long Island natives – Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (a.k.a. Satch) – legendary shredders still at the top of their game, joined cosmic forces on the iconic Beacon Theatre stage this past Saturday night (April 6) in a show for the ages. The concert, which was the 11 th stop on their 38-date ‘Satch/Vai Tour’ which embarked on March 22 in Orlando, Florida, shook the historic venue nestled on Manhattan’s Upper West Side to its foundation as the long-time friends of more than five decades authored a master class in guitar instrumental compositions.

Steve Vai Joe Satriani

Like many of you out there, music became one of my greatest passions as a teenage boy in the throes of puberty. It was the mid-1980s, and bursting onto the scene was Steve Vai with his 1984 debut studio LP Flex-Able . This was an album that I listened to religiously on my Walkman (remember those?) while mowing neighborhood lawns for some spending money – money that I spent on buying more rock music, including the single “Yankee Rose” – an MTV hit recorded by David Lee Roth (DLR) for his first full-length solo LP ( Eat ‘Em and Smile , 1986) – featuring the prominent electric guitar of its co-writer, none other than Steve Vai. Around this same time, the movie Crossroads hit theaters. This was an impactful film for my musical exploration, that in the climactic guitar duel, saw Vai play the part of Jack Butler (the villain who sold his soul to the devil for his fiendish guitar skills) against Ralph Macchio’s Eugene Marton (fighting to save his mentor’s soul). Fun fact. Although Macchio was able to paly guitar, both audio parts in the duel were played by Vai, showcasing his immense versatility as an axe-man.

Before Saturday night’s show, I had witnessed Steve Vai play live one other time. I was two weeks shy of my 16 th birthday when I attended my second ever concert – DLR’s ‘Skyscraper Tour’ at the Hartford Civic Center (now known as XL Center) on April 8, 1988. Although I do not remember the experience particularly well, maybe because it was the first time I ever smoked weed, I still have the ticket stub to prove it! Vai would go on to part ways with DLR the following year.

Steve Vai Joe Satriani

Known by fellow guitarist for his intense practice regimen and music theory aptitude, Vai took the stage shortly after 8:00 pm where he unleashed “Avalancha” and “Little Pretty,” both from his tenth studio album ( Inviolate , 2022), along with “Building the Church,” a number recorded back in 2005 for the album Real Illusions: Reflections .

Before erupting into “Tender Surrender” from his 1985 EP Alien Love Secrets , Vai introduced his talented touring band of Phillip Bynoe (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums) and Dante Frisielle (guitar/keys), followed by a warm greeting to the nearly 3,000 souls in attendance:

Oh, my goodness! What is going on here tonight in New York City? You look beautiful. It’s so nice to be out on this tour with Joe and it’s so nice to be here in New York City, my home. Well, my home for the first 19 years of my life, [and] I still love this city. Thanks so much for coming to the show, enjoy!

Succeeding “Lights Are On” ( Modern Primitive , 2016) came my favorite part of Vai’s set, two more songs collected from Inviolate which saw the master immediately tear into a fiery “Zeus in Chains” and then break out his three-necked Hydra guitar (which he designed in conjunction with Ibanez) for the aptly titled “Teeth of the Hydra.”

Watch Steve Vai perform fan favorite and closing number of his set, “For the Love of God,” lifted from his second studio album ( Passion and Warfare , 1990) below:

Satch, the professor and elder statesman to Vai by 4 years, was up next to perform the second co-headlining set and melt the collective faces of the sold-out Beacon Theatre with his instrumental rock mastery of the electric guitar. Similar to Steve Vai’s Flex-Able , I also discovered Satriani around the same time, when he dropped 1987’s Surfing With The Alien , his second studio album and one of the first compact discs I ever owned.

He led off his 90-minute set with “The Extremist,” the title track from his fourth studio album released in 1992, which showcased not only his guitar prowess, but also plays a mean harp too! With his second song of the night, the title track from Surfing With The Alien , I was transported back in time, to my childhood bedroom, as if I were listening to the studio take of this amazing song on headphones, but even better!

Steve Vai Joe Satriani

Preceding the only snafu of the night, Satch tore through a career-spanning trio of numbers from his prolific discography comprised of “Satch Boogie” ( Surfing With the Alien ), “Sahara” ( The Elephants of Mars , 2022), and “Nineteen Eighty” ( Shapeshifting , 2020). However, before launching into “Big Bad Moon” ( Flying in a Blue Dream , 1989), Satch’s guitar cable broke. As the band carried on without him via an impromptu “theme song,” a team of three techs did their best to resolve the issue, including swapping out his pedal board. Despite their valiant efforts, the song had to be scratched from the set as Satch jibed, “Forget about that other song, we’ll just do [the title track] “Flying Blue Dream” and get on with it.”

As Satch’s 13-song set headed for home, he gifted additional tracks from The Elephants of Mars (“Blue Foot Groovy”), Surfing With the Alien (“Always With Me, Always With You” and “Ice 9”), and 2004’s Is There Love in Space? (“If I Could Fly”). Next, following the introductions of his band – Rai Thistlethwayte (keys), Bryan Beller (bass), and Kenny Aronoff (drums), Satch addressed his loyal followers:

So, not too far from here, but a very, very long time ago, a little kid came to my front door. He had a stringless guitar in one hand, and a pack of strings in the other and was looking for lessons. There was something about him, I thought, this is gonna be fun. I like the look in his eyes. It looks like he’s got that passion and desire, even at 12 years old. I’m telling you the truth, at 12 years old, he had it. We quickly became comrades, with one goal, which was to just keep playing electric guitar as long as we could. And thanks to you, we were able to live that dream, and we’ve stayed best friends ever since. So please help bring out to the stage Mr. Steve Vai.

steve vai tour bassist

His pupil then returned to the stage for an epic encore jam comprised of “The Sea Of Emotion, Pt. 1” – a collaboration between the two buddies, recently released on March 29, that sees the two icons seamlessly trading solo sections – “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks and Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” the latter two numbers rendered from their axes with a personal flair, of course.

Watch Joe Satriani perform the soaring and uplifting “Always with Me, Always with You” ( Surfing With the Alien ) here:

After the Satch/Vai Tour wraps on May 12 in Santa Rosa, California, Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey will be joining the newborn supergroup Beat, additionally comprised of King Crimson’s guitarist/singer Adrian Belew and bassist Tony Levins. The foursome will be setting out on a special fall tour kicking off September 12 in San Jose, CA, culminating November 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada, paying homage along the way to the progressive English rock band’s trio of iconic studio albums from the ‘80s – Discipline , Beat , and Three of a Perfect Pair . If you are like me and cannot get enough of Steve Vai, he is featured on the May 2024 edition cover of Guitar World magazine (already in print on newsstands), along with an in-depth article celebrating the 25th anniversary of Flex-Able .

Up next for Satch is “The Best Of All Worlds 2024 Tour” with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham. The tour, which will feature music from every phase of Hagar’s career (including Van Halen, Chickenfoot, and The Circle), runs from July 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida to August 31 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Tony Levin, Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, and Danny Carey Join Forces for BEAT Tour

The supergroup will join forces for the BEAT Tour, a creative reinterpretation of iconic '80s King Crimson albums

steve vai tour bassist

Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, and Tool drummer Danny Carey join forces for the BEAT Tour, a creative reinterpretation of iconic ’80s King Crimson albums. They will come together this fall for an extensive tour across North America performing repertoire from these three King Crimson iconic albums The BEAT Tour will begin in San Jose, CA on September 12 at San Jose Civic with the final show planned for November 8 at Las Vegas, NV’s The Theater at Virgin Hotels. An artist pre-sale goes live today at Noon Eastern (Password: BEATTOUR), with the general on-sale set for Friday, April 5 at 10am local time here:  www.BEAT-tour.com .

Guitarist Adrian Belew reflects, “The 1981 through 1984 King Crimson created a music all its own. Timeless. Beautiful. Complex. Fierce. For the fans who lived through it then, and the ones who never got to witness it, our aim is to bring it to life again. A monumental task but we’re going for it! There are not enough exclamation points to express my excitement!”

Guitarist Steve Vai states, “Being a part of this ensemble is an extraordinary privilege and opportunity to perform some of the most beloved, timeless, and monumental music of the 80’s (and beyond) with truly inspired musicians. This music resonates deeply with me. Adrian, Tony and Danny are unique musicians with an otherworldly insight into presenting rich musical complexities in a very accessible way, and I am looking forward to searching each other’s musical minds in real time on stage. I’m sure sparks will fly.” He continues, “Father Robert Fripp is one of our historical geniuses. His highly specific and exceptionally brilliant guitar technique is studied and revered. His contribution to the quality of my musical life, and so many others is supreme. I can assure the fans of KC that I will be putting my best foot forward to respect this great music with the care and intensity it deserves. Did I say ‘sparks will fly?’”

Bassist Tony Levin offers, “This is going to be quite a tour. Revisiting some of my favorite music is a treat in itself, but in company of this stellar lineup, I expect to have my musical butt kicked! And it’s also great that we’re not just playing a few shows, we’re hitting it hard. So,  Road Dogs  are coming to your area soon.”

Drummer Danny Carey shares, “I am very excited to share the stage with three of my favorite musicians on the planet. Tony, Steve and Adrian have always been a source of inspiration for me since the beginning of my career, and now to be able to share a bit of my musical journey with them is a dream come true. There’s nothing better to make some sparks fly and light a fire under your ass than getting out of your musical comfort zone, and I can’t think of any other three guys I’d rather do this with. I think I can speak for all of us when I say I hope all of our fans are as excited as we are about this tour.”

The vision for this undertaking emanated from initial dialogue between Angelo Bundini aka Scrote and Adrian Belew. Tour Producer Bundini recalls, “When Adrian called me to help bring his idea to fruition, I immediately thought it best to focus on the 80s albums:  Discipline, Beat,  and  Three Of A Perfect Pair.  These three records famously marked Adrian and Tony’s entry into King Crimson. Their fluid, melodic virtuosity, and Fripp’s and Bruford’s dramatic precision created a totally unique, dynamic push and pull that would influence nearly every rock musician and/or band going forward for years, if not decades, to come.”
