Sounds like fun! In for progress and part numbers!

forester long travel suspension

You have some good ideas. I actually have HotBits coilovers on my SF, see my thread at HotBits coilovers - OFFROADSUBARUS.COM Pontoontodd designed some inverted coilovers the way you imagine them but they must be a little more expensive https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/foru...ing-subarus-faster-and-more-reliable-offroad/ Have a nice read !

Oh hey, I have actually read both of those in completion front to back! I've tried to scour the whole internet for as many different iterations of the principle design as possible. I like the idea of the inverted coil overs however, the way that I have seen, I don't exactly like them. Having only an inch or so of 7/8 threading will create quite a great shear force, and I don't like the idea of a sleeve that the coil-over is going in and out of. The second link also contains the double wishbone conversion. I thought about this alot, and I still am, however I would only do it if I decide to run a whole 3-5 inches wider per side, as that would be where the only benefit lies. Yet, because this is also a "daily project," I need to design a setup that I can install in 3 days, assuming no hiccups, after I build all four corners. -Tanner

Ah, ok ! I'm not sure that the Fox or Radflo shocks can be used as strut inserts so this means you go for a double wishbone design, aren't you ?

Check out the images above. I plan on creating a tube sleeve that will fit around the shock tube itself, then be bolted through the lower eyelet. In a sense it is almost the exact same as stock suspension, but instead "modular." Here is an example that is close to what I am doing, but also very different. The only downside is that I will need to cut holes in the sleeve for venting of heat. -Tanner

I did look at the images ! What I am concerned about is the inner design of the Fox or Radflo shocks, they are probably not meant to be used as struts (shear force), but I might be wrong. As for the shafts, 7/8 is a minimum knowing that you want long travel, any smaller and they would bend easily.

Correct, which is the ultimate conclusion. I understand what you mean now. While I do not have a complete, 100% answer, I have exchange a couple emails/phone calls with Fox about the design and they were not too worried about the lateral loading of the shocks themselves. I have been trying to talk to RadFlo to get a second opinion but their service department/customer service will not return messages. And even still, the design is currently very far up in the air. Once I get my temporary lower lift on and the body lift spacers, I will be able to mock up some links to see the angle I can get out of them. I also forgot to mention that if necessary (if I can get more opinions on the shear force loading on different Fox/Radflo/King shocks), I might be able to include an upper roller bearing to essentially isolate the actual shock assembly from these loads. Instead it would go directly into the 7/8" shaft. Thank you for the comments, as I sent, anything is much appreciated! -Tanner

If you're looking for high angle front axles, get some SVX axles as they go over 30° vs 25° for the normal Forester axles. You will also need front SG A-arms as they are 1cm wider than SF's and a little grinding on the SVX outer cv's to fit the Forester hubs.

Yep, I was planning on doing some SVX axles in the future but right now I am focusing on getting it higher. I may end up extending and sleeving the SVX axles as well because I plan on going wider. -Tanner

Would not recommend an emulsion for sustained use. The oil and gas mix each cycle Think about shaking a soda can, the same thing happens in emulsion shocks. Definitely go with a remote reservoir, or a shock with an IFP for an internal reservoir at the minimum. Also consider the proximity of the lower eyelet mount to the cv and axel, you may need to shift the two mounts for the sleeve to hub down to allow clearance. Additionally depending on the shock manufacturer the cylinder/body may be steel, not aluminum, so consider that when determining thermal expansion. King shocks will have steel bodies (zinc plated) and aluminum end caps.

Update 8/28/2019 Okay, number #2 financial priority done (bills😂) now to have fun on the Forester: I know I just talked about double wishbone up front, but I might try a different approach. I want to stay away from sub-frame spacers as much as possible. Right now, I am toying around with getting a lower lift setup, then dropping the LCA mounts about 1"-1.5" up front, and extending the rear trailing arm/lateral links. I believe that the angle will be within the limits per spec up front, and the rear should not be too far out of alignment. I then plan on doing an inverted Fox shock setup, similar to what has been done in the past by this guy and his outback. If I can make it work, with a bit of reinforcement, I would have a slightly modified subframe, long travel shocks, and there would be as much center clearance as possible. The shocks should be a little bit more supported than those linked, but I have yet to put them into CAD so I can't say for sure. I'm gonna run a quick sim on them too to make sure they are up to the task- they should be, as he races and beats his car more than I intend on doing to mine. I will update in the weeks to come, -Tanner

Awesomeness..! Can't wait to see how it all comes together.. I have been playing around with something not entirely dissimilar; '01 Forester rear strut towers rusted through & began to collapse, so I attacked it with a sawzall (stage 19 lightness) & am adding enough cage to (hopefully) not fold it in half when we take it out in the dunes.. Along the way I needed clearance for real tires so good reason to use the lower strut lift brackets I have.. I don't want to deal with the rusty hardware or lose the ground clearance for spacing the subframes, etc but the CV's bind @ full droop (+2.5"), so I mocked up some old WRX struts (~1" shorter) and they would make it work but that 1" is given up in travel, which it already has precious little of, obviously.. It occurred to me that the easiest (in this case) solution is to raise the upper strut mounts ~1" to keep the angles in check while retaining as much travel and clearance as practical with stock struts.. I'm mostly hoping the amount of useless I have cut off the car will give the struts a hope of not being constantly bottomed out and/or folded in half.. If it is not obvious by this point my build differs in that I am simply trying some things with what I have around and seeing what can be done with the (basically) stock geometry/bolt-on setup (besides the cage bit & chopping towers, lol) some of which may be transferable to the next unit.. Having said all of that; are/have you considered pushing the lower ball joint forward to add/gain back both caster and tire clearance to the door jamb area..? As much as I am trying to not put actual $ into this unit the chances of the motor still outlasting the rusty stock LCA's are not terrible with what I have in mind to do with it, so I have considered making some plate and/or tube LCA's which would move the LBJ pivot as far forward and out as the axles will deal with, thinkin ~1" each way for stock junk, but need to measure more while moving things around..

2022 Subaru Forester Touring Review: Quick Take

Mike Schlee

Recently, we held a massive 2022 AutoGuide Compact SUV Comparison test presented by NRS Brakes . We’re now going to take a closer look at one of the entries in that massive match-up, the 2022 Subaru Forester Touring.

The Forester is firmly entrenched in the status quo. Throughout the vehicle’s 25-year history, the template for Subaru’s compact SUV hasn’t changed much, including the styling. When was the last time a new-generation Forester looked completely, revolutionary different from the vehicle it replaced? The correct answer to that question is never.

Exterior Style

Maybe though, that’s the point. The Forester continues to be a huge seller for Subaru and many customers are extremely loyal not just to the brand, but the Forester itself. There are good reasons it never changes its boxy shape and why consumers keep flocking back to it.

Although visually uninspiring, the vehicle’s squared off body leads to terrific sightlines. The amount of glass on all sides of the Forester creates a greenhouse unmatched by any of its competitors. The cargo area is large with a wide-opening rear hatch that allows easy access for loading and unloading gear. The rear seats were rated the most comfortable in our mega comparison test, providing decent legroom, good cushion support and excellent headroom.

Ride Quality and Comfort

No Subaru (except the BRZ of course) wold be complete without the addition of the brand's standard symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

While on the topic of comfort, the Forester’s long travel suspension allows it to float over most road imperfections, swallowing up broken pavement that unsettles some other small SUVs. It’s a benefit of Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive set-up that allows each wheel to move further up and down to match the road’s surface. Despite this comfort advantage, the small SUV still offers acceptable handling, about average for the segment.

SEE ALSO: 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness Review: First Drive

Of course, we can’t talk about a Subaru without bringing up its poor weather performance. It may have been a beautiful summer day during our evaluations, but the snow is coming. When it does arrive, the Forester will be ready. It’s more than capable enough to handle the worst the season has to offer, thanks in part to a standard 8.7-inches of ground clearance and Subaru’s X-Mode.

Tech and Safety

Subaru combines a simple interior with a steering wheel that's almost overloaded with buttons. The brown leather on this green model stands out as particularly appealing.

On hand for evaluation is a fully loaded Touring trim, or Premier in Canada. It’s well equipped and includes items like DriverFocus, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. All of the latest safety hardware is present in the Forester, with the majority being part of Subaru’s EyeSight safety system .

The interior design is well thought out, using premium soft touch materials on most surfaces. We appreciate the programable three information screens, even if they are beginning to look a bit dated.

Powertrain and Efficiency

The 2.5-liter Boxer 4-cylinder engine makes 182 hp, which is somewhat low for the segment. The engine also lacks some refinement.

Things are less positive when it comes to the drivetrain. In our comparison, it ranks as the second worst engine/transmission combo. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine makes 182 hp, which is on the lower end of the segment, and only partners up with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Under moderate acceleration, the drivetrain is noisy and lacks the power and refinement of some key competitors like the Nissan Rogue , Toyota RAV4 Hybrid , and Kia Sportage Hybrid .

SEE ALSO: Subaru Forester vs Chevrolet Equinox Comparison: Underdog Fight

With an official EPA consumption figure of 29 MPG combined, the Forester is fairly efficient, but can’t match the more powerful Nissan Rogue in terms of outright fuel economy performance. Still, the Forester does have full-time all-wheel drive and is one of the better fuel sippers when it comes to small SUVs powered by naturally aspirated engines.

2022 Subaru Forester Touring: The Verdict

The boxy shape of the Forester gives it an iconic look. It also makes sure sight-lines out of the vehicle are excellent.

As it stands, the Forester has a lot going for it and we see why it’s so popular with consumers. But the drivetrain is a bit of a letdown. If Subaru was willing to significantly overhaul the drivetrain with a small, turbocharged engine, or better yet, an advanced hybrid system, it would go a long way in putting the Forester in the same conversation as the class leaders.

In its current configuration, the Forester is a solid mid-pack performer. For the potential customer that’s looking for an easy to maneuver, comfortable, hassle-free compact SUV that excels in poor weather conditions, it’s well worth a look.

Right on, Joe. Anyone that lives in or near the Sierra Nevada leans to, or demands AWD/4WD. Jeeps and Subarus are predominate, for those reasons. It has to do with self preservation, not granola or Birkenstocks. Finally, high quality snow tires (not all season) are required when traveling in the Sierra in the winter. And a FWD with Blizzaks for example will out perform a 4wd/AWD with all Season tires. Seen it aa thousand times around here.

Enjoyed my 2016 Forester. It was only SUV with a large opening for the sunroof. Im hopeful Subaru will keep that feature and NOT increase the exterior dimensions in the next gen, which should be 2025 model. Im not in the market for 23 or 24 new vehicle.

Subaru Forester Off Road Build: All the Best Mods

Is subaru good for off road yes but to reach its maximum off road capacities you will have to make a few mods to your subaru. i created this guide to help you build your dream off road subaru with all the best mods i’m gonna explain you how to modify your subaru for off roading. from lift kit, to all terrain tires, suspensions and bumpers. you will have all the important informations to create the ultimate subaru forester off road build, before starting modifying your subaru for off roading.

First things first. I know it’s very tempting but before buying off road mods like led bar, alloy rims, roof rack …. GET A PROPER MAINTENANCE!

I mean, change all the fluids, oil, all the filters, change your timing belt if needed, have spark plugs and ignition wires in good condition, good wheel bearing, not stuck brake calipers… And that’s just an non-exhaustive list of important mechanical parts to check or change on your old Subaru.

Also, check if your Subaru is not fully rusted like on the rear struts towers, rear quarter panels, subframes… Because if it’s the case, it might not be a good base for an off-road build. Except if you want an off-road beater and you don’t care about the car’s condition (and future).

You NEED Good SUSPENSION on your Subaru for Off Roading

Suspension is gonna have huge role to play while off roading: for performance and comfort. This is what give you a comfortable, safe and efficient ride so don’t skip on that. What I recommend is at least OEM like struts and top hats in good conditions and maybe even brand new..  Kayaba (KYB) ,  Pedders  and  Bilstein  provide good quality struts.

Note that pretty often, old Forester have a saggy butt problem because of the self-leveling struts failing. Because of that, the rear of the car is seating really low and the struts bottom out pretty often. So, take care of that.

Also, if you carry a lot of gear on the back like camping gear, recovery gear or a drawer system, Heavy Duty (HD) springs on the back might be a good idea. For that, you can have a look at Pedders or  Rallitek .

That being said, I don’t recommend raised spring because they are not good for articulation while off roading and also provide a harsh ride.

Another tip: If you have an SF Forester you can directly get SG Forester REAR struts. Indeed, the spring perch is higher and will allow you to fit bigger tires. We are going to talk about off road tires for your Subaru in a few minutes, down below.

If you have a newer Forester, crosstrek or outback, Ironman released  a new all terrain suspension  which look like stock suspension but actually provide a 2in lift. So, this can be interesting because the kit combines lift kit and good suspension at the same time.

forester long travel suspension

My Pedders struts and springs with my ADF lift kit ready to be installed! After many years, I’m still more than happy with them.

How to Choose your Subaru LIFT KIT for Off Roading?

Speaking about lift, this is something you will need for off roading. A lift will allow you to have more ground clearance, approach and departure angles but also to fit larger tires.

The most common way to lift a Subaru is lift blocks or strut top lift.

A 2in lift is a good compromise for ground clearance and at the same time, not to bad for the CVs. You can go up to 2.5in on the front and 3in on the rear. After that, you will need subframe spacers because the CVs take too much angle. Also don’t forget about trailing arm spacer to get your rear wheels centered in the wheel arches.

And just so you know if your goal is to get a 4 or 5in lift (or even more) it will require a lot more work and modifications: steering knuckle extension, Engine, transmission & diff crossmember spacers, brake lines extension and more! So, keep that in mind.

To get a lift kit for your off road Subaru you can check at:

  • Anderson Design and Fabrication  (ADF)
  • SubieLift OZ  (SLO)
  • LP Aventure
  • Primitive Racing
  • MadebyMade  (for the European market)

Note that with this kind of lift you will wear your CV boots quicker. BUT they will not fail every 2 weeks like some people say.

If you plan to lift your Subaru with your stock, old CV and CV boots just get 2 spare genuine Subaru CV boots (for the front). Because the old ones generally fail really quick after the lift. But once the new ones are on, you will have some time before they fail.

Subaru Forester Off Road TIRES : The MOST IMPORTANT!

Good tires on your Subaru! Trust me, it makes a huge difference in term of traction while off roading and is also an easy way to get more ground clearance.

A tall sidewall is better for off roading BUT bigger doesn’t necessarily mean BETTER!

215/75/15 off road tires like the BFG KO2 I run is a good compromise but a 235/75/15 AT tire is also a pretty common size. Note that with this second tire size, it might be more difficult to fit it on the car and they are also heavier, which result in more power loss, lower gas mileage and more stress on the driveline (you can understand more broken CV here)

Good all terrain tires for your off road Subaru are:

  • BF Goodrich KO2
  • General Grabber AT3
  • General Grabber AT2
  • Falken Wildpeak AT3W
  • Yokoama Geolandar AT
  • Toyo Open Country AT3

I recommend you to check the prices and the weight of the tire to make your choice.

The BFG KO2 might be heavier but the sidewall is so tough that you can off road with your Subaru with a very welcome peace of mind.

a subaru forester equiped with BF Goodrich KO2 all terain tires

I’ve been using (and abusing) the BF Goodrich KO2 AT tires on my Forester for many years. And I will keep running them!

SKID PLATES : You NEED them for your Off Road Subaru

If you want to go off roading with even more peace of mind, get skid plates. This is a pretty important off road mod for your Subaru, especially with the very exposed oil pan we have. I suggest you to at least get one on the front for the engine oilpan.  You can also get one for the rear differential.

They will protect some critical components of your car but also help you slide over rocks or mud if you bottom out.

Mines are from the Sub’Garage, they are 8mm alloy and features rated recovery points and it’s a pretty good option for my fellow European off road Subaru enthusiasts.

Others companies offers good quality skid plates like:

  • Primitive racing

Want more? Check these ADVANCED Subaru OFF ROAD MODS:

If you want to go even more hardcore with your Subaru Forester Off Road Build , you can remove your sway bars or install a quick disconnect on your sway bar links. You are gonna have more body roll that’s for sure but you will also get more articulation while off roading. And more articulation = more traction. This is exactly what we need with our Subarus. Note that the heavy duty springs mentioned earlier will help reduce that body roll.

For your transmission, a limited slip differential is a good mod for off roading. It act like a “soft locker” and helps you with traction. Also a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) is a good idea. It’s basically a center diff lock and gives you power on front and rear wheels all the time even if you lift a wheel.

You also have the TorQ Locker option. But I would recommend it to you only for a Subaru dedicated for off roading because it can be annoying and noisy on a daily drive. Plus, it’s only really useful coupled with a center diff lock.

A low range gearbox or dual range gear box like mine on the SF Forester (available in Oz and in Europe on the manual and non turbo early Subaru) is a huge help to tackle more difficult trails.

For your suspensions, long travel off road coilovers will give you lift and more travel! It’s also suspensions you can rebuild and do maintenance on. For that, you can check at  Flat out suspension ,  Gorilla Offroad  and Hotbits.

To improve even more your approach and departure angles, an off road bumper for your Subaru Forester is a good idea! And why not go for a  custom spare tire carrier for your forester  at the same time?

For the weight and look, you can’t skip on awesome Subaru forester off road wheels! Especially the alloy ones. A well known model is the  MR502 from Method Race Wheels . You also have  Black Rhino , Sparco,  Motegi  and LP adventure.

What Should you Bring Off Roading? The Essential Off Road Accessories

Beside  the typical adventure gear  you can have in your Subaru, off roading require more specific gear.

First, recovery gear! You can get recovery boards, a 12v air compressor to air up and air down, a snatch strap properly rated for your car and a shovel …. I actually made a detailed video about recovery gear so I strongly recommend you to check it out!

all the recovery gear you need for off roading with your subaru

Click the picture to watch my off road recovery gear video!

Also, learn your and your vehicle limits. Remember, even lifted it’s just a soccer mom wagon, not a rock crawler. You have some limitations and the lines you are gonna take with your Subaru while off-roading are gonna be way different than with a “real” 4wd truck. Another thing to keep in mind is the weight! it’s a big advantage we have with our Subarus. They are pretty lightweight and it really help while off-roading so be careful to not ruin that. Be careful of the weight you put on your roof, your cargo weight and also wheels and tires weight.

For not priority but still really useful off road gear I can mention  lights: ditch lights, LED light bar, even rock lights .

You can also organize your Subaru’s cargo area with drawers or  MOLLE racks . That way, everything is nicely organized and most of all secured while off roading. So, your hatchet won’t fly in the car if you take a bump a bit too hard.

Let's Build that Off Road Subaru Now!

With all these tips, off road mods and Subaru specialists brands you should be able to make an awesome Subaru Forester Off Road Build . Or at least a pretty decent one!

And remember, you don’t have to buy everything at once! Actually, I think it’s even better to start off roading with your Subaru when it’s stock. That way you will really learn your vehicle and understand how it works. Then, you will be able to identify what you need to make it more capable the way you like.

cool. Why Subaru and not a Land Cruiser?

My Forester is cheaper on : price of the car, car parts, insurance, fuel, aftermarkets parts/off road mods It’s also way funnier and more challenging. Plus you don’t see them really often, (at least here in Europe) So, I’ll keep my Forester 🙂

Moin! Ich suche für meinen Forester von 2004 einen dachträger für eine geschlossene Reling, kannst du mir weiterhelfen? Lg. Luca

Hi Luca ! You can look at Peugeot partner roofrack, with some cutting they can fit and they are pretty cheap second hand 😉

Been told head gaskets blow on forresters as the material used in early 2000 models were changed. Did not affect the turbo motor. What are yourr thoughts. Cheers john

Hey John! I’m not gonna lie, head gasket of the early Subaru were not the best. Issues with them are pretty usual on the 2.5L tubro engine. The N/A will last longer 😉

I’ve been seriously thinking about getting a Forester. I sold my GQ Patrol and got a Kona, It did the steep hill climbs far easier than the Patrol did but after a few belly slides and a lecture from my mechanic I realized that using it for forestry trails was not a very good idea. When I move into my new place (Bigger garage) I will buy one of these. Especially because like you said…cheaper parts ETC. I’ve seen videos of these crossing the Simpson Desert, Going to Fraser Island and just sand driving in general. Thanks for the post, I will refer to it when building up mine.

Thank you for your comment mate! The Forester is definitely a good choice !

Hi there, I recently bought a Forester SG5 2.0 X (N/A) 2004 The rear shocks are leaking so I’m thinking about swapping both front and rear. I’m planning on taking the car on a road trip to Norway, so lots of bumpy roads 😉 Do you think KYB shocks in combination with Pedders HD springs will be a good combination? (I’ve seen a lot of forums stating that Pedders shocks are a bit dissapointing in comparison to KYB’s)

By the way, love your vids. Keep up the great work!

Hey there ! KYB are also a great choice, you can go for it for sure. Have fun in Norway ! Thanks for the kind words, have a great day

I am considering doing some adventure with my RHD 2009 Forester but not too extreme. Mainly for camping, hangout by the river, and heading to mountain bike and hiking trails. Your article was beneficial in helping me decide the way I should go. I am unfamiliar with off-roading, so all the help and advice I can get will be appreciated. Right now, I am thinking of a 2-inch lift, I currently have stock 16-inch rims. I was wondering if I can install off-road tires on the same stock rims. I intend to have added weight on the vehicle because I want to install a two-person tent and awning on top of the vehicle, plus carry two mountain bikes attached to a tow hitch bike rack. I would like to know what you recommend for shocks and suspension to cater for such added weight. Thanks again and looking forward to your feedback and any other advice you think I should consider given what I describe to you.

Subaru Suspension Lifts: Everything You Need To Know Before Buying

There’s a lot of disparaging comments made about spacer lifts or “leveling kits” on the internet in the 4×4 community. Some of them are warranted and others, not so much. The technique for lifting trucks doesn’t always carry over when modifying a unibody Subaru with independent suspension for offroading.

I actually believe that a spacer lift is more than enough for a Subaru since they allow most drivers to install a tire that’s big enough for trails.  But what about suspension lifts? How do they compare and is it something you should invest in?

For most Subaru owners, I would say that a full suspension lift is unnecessary. Some suspension lifts require specialized installation and might even cause some headache if a replacement is needed down the road.

Table of Contents

Types of lift kits, spacer lifts.

The biggest downside to using a spacer lift on a Subaru is that is doesn’t provide any change in spring rate or adjustability.

When you lift a vehicle, you are raising the center of gravity and creating a bit more body roll than stock. Body roll occurs when centrifugal force is applied to the vehicle during turning maneuvers. You may feel the vehicle leaning as the car tilts or “rolls” towards the outside of a turn as you drive around a curve – this is what we refer to as body roll.

In order to offset this issue in a lifted Subaru, a set of stiffer springs can be installed to help stiffen up the vehicle’s suspension. Or you can install a suspension lift that solves this issue as well.

I personally have not had enough of an issue with body roll to cause me any concern when only lifting two inches. But if you plan to load your car up with camping gear or offroad gear, it might become more noticeable.

Some drivers also prefer to have adjustability built into their suspension. Customizing one’s suspension requires some know-how and time. In my case, I’ve never needed to adjust the suspension on my Subaru. But there are those who prefer to be able to.

My opinion on spacer lift kits for Subarus – for the overwhelming majority of drivers, they offer more than enough lift and capability at a great price. Our cars aren’t rock crawlers and don’t typically need to be lifted much more than 2 inches. A spacer lift does everything that most Subaru owners will need. I personally use spacer lifts and have had no issues still keeping up with folks who have more advanced suspension set ups.

If you’d like to explore some of my favorite Subaru spacer lifts, check out this article that has some great lift kit options.

To recap, here are the main pros and cons of running spacer lifts on a Subaru:

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to install
  • Usually come with everything to lift the vehicle
  • Provide enough room to fit larger tires
  • Very reliable and durable
  • This lift kit design has been perfected to provide great suspension geometry out of the box
  • No change in spring rate to offset body roll after lifting
  • No built in adjustability for dampening or ride height
  • Suspension may sag when carrying heavy gear in the vehicle

You’ll notice how the spacer bolts to the top of the factory suspension. For the record, we recommend inspecting and fully cleaning your suspension before installation. This strut assembly was cleaned prior to reinstallation.

Suspension Lifts

ironman 4x4 suspension lift subaru

I know I just spent a lot of time speaking kindly of spacer lifts and it may seem like I don’t think anyone should spend extra money on a suspension lift. On the contrary, I actually believe there are many situations where a suspension lift could be the best choice for a person. But there are a few different types to consider when buying.

Suspension lifts come in a few variations:

  • lift springs
  • extended strut/spring combo lifts
  • long travel coilovers

There are also kits that incorporate springs and spacers, such as the Primitive Racing lift kits that I happen to like a lot. Lift springs replace your factory springs and are usually stiffer while providing additional height.

There are also some companies producing longer strut and spring combos that replace your entire strut assembly such as the Ironman 4×4 lift. Then there are long travel coilovers that are a similar concept to longer struts, but they are adjustable via a threaded collar that can be rotated to change the height of the vehicle.

Suspension lifts can change your spring rate and allow you to carry heavier loads in your vehicle without experiencing rear sag. For people who carry a full size spare tire on their rear hitch, or anyone using a roof top tent, this is vital to making sure the suspension doesn’t sag and that the car doesn’t have excessive body roll.

Let’s briefly look at the three types of suspension lifts available for Subarus.

Spring lifts: Lift springs on their own typically don’t provide a lot of lift. However, this type of lift kit is great for someone who is planning to tow or carry a lot of heavy equipment. Rear tire carriers and steel bumpers are a great reason to install lift springs on your Subaru. I have a heavy tube bumper on my Forester and recently purchased some springs from Primitive Racing to help offset the sagging caused by adding that much weight to the front of the car.

A spring lift can typically be installed on your OEM struts without the need for purchasing an entire assembly. But the installation needs to be done correctly with a spring compressor.

Most people won’t run just a lift spring but will usually add a set of spacers for a full 1-2 inch lift. This allows for a person to offset extra body roll while still getting additional ground clearance. This type of lift is one of the most reliable suspension lifts.

Extended struts and spring lifts: These lift kits are great because they provide an option that gives lift and a better spring rate without strut top spacers. Companies like Ironman 4×4 and Rough Country are now offering longer strut assemblies.

While these provide lift, good suspension travel, and usually a stiffer spring rate, if one of the struts needs to be replaced, it has to be special ordered. A custom strut can’t simply be purchased at your local auto parts store and you may be forced to wait while a new one arrives. This is one of the major reasons I haven’t installed an aftermarket suspension system on my Subaru.

Long travel coilovers: Up until recently, long travel coilovers for Subarus were very expensive (we’re talking 5 figures in some cases) and typically only purchased for rally use. A few years back a couple of brands tried offering some LTC’s for Subarus at a more affordable price point but they weren’t very reliable. Many of the early adopters would complain about having to constantly send them back in for service and having them break regularly.

Today, the off-road coilover options are actually very reliable and well built. The surge in the popularity of off-road Subarus has incentivized new entrepreneurs and well established manufacturers to enter the market and provide a great product. There are a wide range of great off-road coilovers for all current Subaru models from companies like Raceworks and Flatout Suspension.

Long travel coilovers provide a wide range of customization options and offroad performance benefits. They allow for adjustable ride height, different dampening settings, and can even be purchased with custom spring rates from the factory to fit your exact needs. There are different levels of coilovers available, but even the entry level options offer a good driving experience.

Despite being more affordable now than they were a few years ago, long travel coilovers are still one of the most expensive ways to lift your Subaru. This may deter some people, but they can be a good option for others.

2022 subaru wrx with crosstrek struts

To recap, here are some pros and cons to using a suspension lift:

  • Improved spring rate to offset body roll
  • Customizable and can be a great way to get the exact ride quality you need
  • Can be great for towing and carrying heavy gear
  • Suspension lifts usually cost more than a spacer lift…a lot more
  • Coilovers usually require installation to be performed by a professional with knowledge setting up coilovers properly
  • If one of the shocks breaks or wears out, it will usually have to be special ordered

If you load your car up with extra equipment and are looking for the “best of the best,” then a suspension lift may be the right choice for you. A suspension lift is also a good option for someone who’s factory suspension is already worn out. If your stock suspension needs to be replaced, an upgraded suspension lift might not cost much more than the price of factory parts.

Below is a visual representation of what each suspension lift will look like generally. You’ll notice that the spring lift contains a bunch of extra pieces. Some spring lifts can be purchased with just springs , but many people will purchase spacer blocks to go with them for extra lift. The aftermarket strut and spring combo may not look much different from a stock suspension assembly, but they are typically about 2 inches taller than stock. These don’t require strut top spacers, but they do require rear subframe (or multi-link) spacers as pictured below.

subaru suspension lift kits

Now that we’ve explored some of the different types of suspension lifts, we’ll look at some of the most popular suspension lifts that are available for Subarus.

Best Suspension Lift Options

Primitive-Racing-Lift-Kit-for-Subaru-Outback

Primitive Racing Spring & Spacer Lifts

Primitive Racing is one of the best companies out there offering parts for Subarus. They take quality control very seriously and their owner, Blake, takes customer satisfaction equally as serious.

I own their yellow overload springs and will be installing them soon to offset the added weight from my heavy off-road bumpers. This is what I would recommend to anyone with a rooftop tent, rear tire carrier, or off-road bumpers. Even if you are loading your car down with heavy camping gear, this is a great way to cut down body roll and maintain good drivability.

These lifts can help offset the sag that may occur when carrying things like:

  • Rooftop tents
  • Rear tire carriers
  • Heavy camping gear
  • Offroad gear

One of my favorite things about the Primitive kits is the reliability. They utilize OEM parts that allow you to quickly and easily replace parts in the off chance that you break something. For example, my struts are getting old and tired but I can easily buy a new set at my local auto parts store without having to wait weeks for a new assembly to arrive. Then I can swap my Primitive parts right over with no issues. Not to mention, Primitive designs their kits with stage rally in mind. They’re built to withstand severe demands.

In my opinion, this is the most reliable suspension lift available. They have a decades-long track record of outfitting Subarus with some of the best suspension parts on the market.

Are you going to find crazy big 6 inch lifts at Primitive? No, but you will find reliable, high quality lift kits that work for 90% of people’s needs.

ironman 4x4 suspension lift subaru

Ironman 4x4 Extended Strut & Spring Lift

Ironman 4×4 has rocketed to the forefront of everyone’s mind in the lifted Subaru community in recent years. They’ve been one of the first companies to offer a full strut/spring combo lift for our cars. Their kits offer 2 inches of lift and are surprisingly good quality.

We recently installed the ATS kit on a friends Outback in my garage and I have to admit I was pretty impressed with the completeness and overall fit and finish of the product. The coating on the struts appears to be solid and didn’t easily chip as we accidentally bumped them around during install. The kit also came with the necessary items to correct the rear suspension geometry – multilink spacers and all the needed hardware. Each piece of the spacer kit looked very well made, powder coated, and precisely machined.

While these are fantastic suspension lifts, there is one thing to keep in mind. If you need to replace one of the struts, it won’t be as simple as going to the auto parts store and grabbing new ones off the shelf. You will have to order them from Ironman and there may be some downtime during the shipping process. If you’re a person who needs their Subaru every day and doesn’t have a second car, plan for this before you go this route.

This suspension lift kit is a good option for someone who likes to participate in mild trail runs and spirited driving in the forest . But these shocks may not be up to the task for those planning to participate in rallycross or stage rally events.

flatout suspension coilovers for lifted subaru outback wilderness

Flatout Suspension Long Travel Coilovers

Flatout Suspension got its start in the rally/overland Subaru industry but has since exploded in popularity among a wide range of enthusiasts. You’ll find their coilovers on Porsches, Broncos, Toyotas, and more.

I’ve spoken with a lot of folks who’ve run these suspension lifts and have heard nothing but good things. Our friend Ryan is using their suspension to lift his 2019 Outback 3 inches and absolutely loves it.

Flatout offers three different options to choose from: The GR Lite, GR Plus, and the GR40. Each of these is progressively more heavy duty and capable. For most off-road Subarus, the GR Lite is perfectly fine. But anyone looking to take their build above and beyond may want to use one of their higher level options as they provide more adjustability, more lift, and more travel.

These coilovers can be purchased for almost every Subaru year, model, and trim level. So if you own something newer or something from the 90’s, they should have an option for you.

As with any custom suspension assembly, keep in mind that in the rare case you manage to damage one of the coilovers, a replacement unit will not be an over the counter piece of equipment. You may have to wait for a new one to ship to you. This isn’t a big deal, but it’s something to consider if you daily drive your Subaru and wouldn’t be able to go more than a couple of days without your vehicle.

It’s also important to remember that a professional or qualified individual needs to perform installation. Coilovers need to have the ride height and preload set correctly. They also need to be maintained regularly and kept free of contaminants to avoid seizing the collar.

I have coilovers on one of my street cars and I try to clean them and re apply anti corrosion products every six months. If you’re going offroad regularly, I would do this even more often.

subaru outback overland raceworks long travel coilovers

Raceworks Long Travel Coilovers

Raceworks is most likely the brand I would use if I wanted to switch over to a long travel coilover on my Subaru. Every person I have talked to that uses them has been blown away by the quality and customer service. They have multiple price options available and seem to be the most well-built LTC for Subarus.

The Overland coilover is an affordable purpose-built suspension for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a versatile lift range of up to 2 inches (or up to 4 inches with the optional C2 Performance Upgrade). This suspension system is engineered with unique valving for rough terrain, has anti-corrosion features, and ample shock travel to absorb substantial bumps. It’s the perfect choice for those who love to explore the great outdoors.

On the other hand, the GZ series coilover is specifically designed for more versatility, offering an impressive lift range of 2 to 6 inches – suitable for a wide spectrum of projects (please be aware that if you want to lift past two inches, it’s recommended that you reach out to Raceworks prior to ordering to determine what additional parts you’ll need to purchase.)

The GZ features long travel struts, Swift Springs known for their quality and performance, high-quality helper springs, and specially designed mounting points that prioritize strength and durability. The chrome-plated shock body prevents rust and corrosion while housing a larger piston for improved performance.

Both the Overland and GZ suspension systems offer adjustability and the freedom to fine-tune your ride to perfection. From damping adjustability to camber adjustment and independent height adjustment, Raceworks makes sure that every user can tailor their suspension setup to their precise requirements. Their coilovers are also fully rebuildable which means you can have them serviced by a professional instead of having to replace them when they wear out.

Common Misconceptions With Subaru Suspension Lifts

"subaru spacer lifts aren't a real lift".

It’s not uncommon to hear people say “spacer lifts aren’t a real lift. If you want to do it the right way, a suspension lift is the way to go.” With most 4×4’s, I would agree. But the way that spacer lifts work on most trucks and SUV’s is completely different. 4×4’s are usually built using a body on frame design and the spacers simply lift the body up off the frame.

Subarus are built using a unibody construction and a spacer lift actually goes on top of the suspension. It actually creates a suspension lift of sorts.

Now you may need a full suspension lift kit to meet your needs. But if all you need is a spacer lift, there’s nothing wrong with going that direction. They actually require less maintenance and allow for full OEM suspension retention.

What Does Long Travel Really Mean?

Long travel Subaru coilovers do have more travel than a regular street or track oriented coilover. However, they don’t magically provide more suspension travel for Subarus.

With our cars, suspension travel is ultimately limited by our CV axles and control arms. If you want a set of long travel coilovers specifically to give you more “flex,” they likely won’t provide as much travel as you’re expecting.

On a 4×4 with straight axles, it’s not hard to create more suspension travel. But on Subarus with fully independent suspension, getting additional “flex” or suspension travel is not something that can be easily done without a lot of custom fabrication.

I believe that a suspension lift provides a lot of great benefits for those of us who need to fine tune the suspension on our offroad Subarus. They can allow off-roaders and overlanders to carry more equipment without sacrificing handling.

If you feel comfortable working with aftermarket suspension or have a great shop that can assist, I think that suspension lift kits are a good option for Subaru owners. Just be prepared to spend a little more money up front and spend additional time dialing in the final touches.

441  - Damping adjustability that adjusts Rebound and Compression in one knob. Very easy to tune vehicle firmness, dive, and roll.

441.5  -  1 Way Adjustable fronts, 2 way adjustable rears with remote reservoirs. The 441.5 kit is a great “bang-for-the-buck” solution for Drifting and Drag Racing. Fine tune traction at every track by adjusting the rear compression force. Also, the rear shock’s 442 remote reservoir has  tons  of compression force adjustably! Dial forward bite, side bite, squat, and bottoming resistance for any track condition. Over the years we have built many of these requested custom kits for budget driven teams. Many podiums later, we created a part number so you too can have this kit.

442   -  2 Way Adjustable fronts and rears with remote reservoirs.  Separate damping adjustability for Rebound and Compression. Rebound adjustability does not change compression force so that you can fine tune the roll and rate of weight transfer. The huge range of compression adjustability is independent of rebound force. The compression adjustability will allow you to adjust for more or less traction and more or less suspension movement on the compression stroke.

443  -  3 Way Adjustable fronts and rears with remote reservoirs.  All of the above plus separate damping adjustability for High Speed Compression, Low Speed Compression, and Rebound. Low speed compression damping adjustability allows you to fine tune chassis movement on the compression stroke over round bumps and/or throttle and braking inputs. High speed compression adjustability allows you to fine tune bottoming resistance and wheel movement on the compression stroke over rumble strips and square edge bumps.

Please Note: For  441.5 ,  442  and  443  applications the following line lengths -

Macpherson:  10"  line, reservoir to be mounted to coilover

Multi-Link:  24"  line, reservoir to be mounted remotely

Longer line lengths are available on request for a $30 per corner fee in most applications

Let customers speak for us

I recently bought a used ‘14 Subaru Outback that was from the northeast and was in desperate need of some new suspension. After weeks of research, I landed on RALLITEK. The install was as straight forward as it could be dealing with the amount of rust I had. I didn’t realize how bad the old suspension was until the new suspension was installed and i took my first drive! What a difference!! I went with the stock height and couldn’t be happier. Cornering is tighter, potholes and washboard roads are a non issue now. Highly highly recommend! Can’t wait to get more RALLITEK parts for my build!

Bilstein B6 Suspension Lift Kit - Fits 2010-2014 Subaru Outback

This Rallitek end link has solved a problem that I have struggled with ever since I put my lift kit on my Crosstrek. The rugged country lift kit kept breaking off at the top of my end links and although Rough Country was good to replace the broken parts I never knew when it was going to happen again and left me uncomfortable trusting my Crosstrek not to break down at the worst time. Thanks for the better option with adjustable end links!!

Lifted HD Adjustable Front Endlinks - Fits 18-23 Subaru Crosstrek

It worth it every $ , even it is 3/8" increase height rated, the actual result when replace my saggy SLS struts was 2". The ride with this set is very comfortable. I've install this set on European Outback with SLS struts, I have LPG tank70-80kg and case with tools about 20kg in my trunk all the time. The result is just amazing.

3/8" Rear Overload Bilstein B6 Lift Kit - Fits 10-14 Subaru Outback

With RalliTEK on your Subaru should be hands down the best suspension upgrade you can make on your Subaru.

2" Lift Kit - Fits 1998-2002 Subaru Forester

Recently purchased and installed the 2” lift kit for my ‘23 Ascent. Pretty easy install and makes my Ascent so much better for those camping trips in the desert or driving down the forest service roads to look for wildlife with the kids. Highly recommended.

2" Suspension Lift Kit Spacers - Fits 19-24 Subaru Ascent

Use ramps or jack stands and the install takes a whole 20 minutes. The ultimate function and form battle armor you need living in Wisconsin. Should be upgrade #1 for all Subaru owners.

Front Skid Plate - Fits 14-18 Subaru Forester NA

Fresh off the lot I made several upgrades to my 2022 Crosstrek Sport for adventuring off-road. Unlike many customizers, I really wanted to maintain as much of my car's on-road feel, highway manners, and mileage as I could while still making it more capable off-road. I was looking to expand the car's capabilities, and was not pursuing a certain aesthetic. In addition to upgrading to 215/65/17 Yokohama tires, -20mm offset wheels, skid plates, 1.5" lift with RA spaces, mud flaps, and rear spare tire holder, I got the +0.5" front and +0.5" overload rear springs with B6 struts. The ride is perfect on and off road. In doing so, I hardly sacrificed any highway manners, noting only a bit softer cornering and increased oversteer which is mostly due to the tires. The stiffer springs tame the rebound of the slightly heavier tires without making the car feel harsh riding around town. Cornering on smooth and rough pavement is better than stock (the 2021-22 Crosstrek already had slightly stiffer springs than the 2018-20). Off-road the ride is great. With the +150 lbs from the full sized spare tire and tire swing, the overload springs and B6s are very well matched, with a nice balanced handling feel between front and back, even when not carrying anything in the back. My Subaru mechanic remarked how good the handling was. I really glad I "sprang" for the overload rears and B6s - the extra stiffness was just what the car needed. If you are running heavier tires, you probably need this kit. If you have a rear spare tire holder, you probably need this kit.

Bilstein B6 Suspension Lift Kit - Fits 2018-2023 Subaru Crosstrek

Good adherence and coloration. Only on for a month now but decent resilience thus far.

RalliTEK Logo Decal

This was the easiest install I can remember. Took less than twenty minutes. It was harder to change out the sad factory horns! Very high quality, all parts fit and finish is the best!

R160 Differential Skid Plate - Fits 20-24 Subaru Outback

This is my second Subaru to run RalliTek springs and lift and I would recommend it to anyone with a Subaru. RalliTek knows their stuff, this is probably the best company to make Subaru lifts. The springs make a world of difference.

2" Suspension Lift Kit - Fits 22-24 Subaru Outback Wilderness

This thing is awesome! completely stiffens up the driveline to where it should have been from the factory! I am surprised but also not by Subaru’s choice to leave such a big void in the factory transmission mount. The mount is designed to fail prematurely due to there being such a large void between the rubber points, this rectifies that issue PERFECTLY.

Transmission Mount Insert Bushing - Fits 2003-2013 Subaru Forester

Had to replace my first set of end links and RalliTEK’s warranty process and customer service is easily one of the best I have ever experienced.

I had to replace my plastic front skid plate because it was demolished. Easy to install, five bolts to attach firmly to vehicle. The kit only came with 4 gold washers when 5 is needed; this is why I didn’t give 5 star.

Front Skid Plate - Fits 03-06 Subaru Baja

Very easy to install

Heavy Duty Front Adjustable Endlinks - Fits 2015-2019 Subaru Outback & Legacy

Ladder is super lightweight, Super easy install. Quality is just outstanding. Really fast shipping. Rallitek's Customer service is top notch. Nashfabco very good upgrade from the previous version of this ladder. Loving the new look to our rig.

Long Travel Kit

Long Travel Kit

 Description

The Dirt King long travel kit was developed to drastically improve the vehicles off-road handling without compromising its day to day driving characteristics. This suspension system allows for 10.5” of travel and accepts up to a 35” tire. The kit is compatible with 2WD models and 4WD models along with the purchase of extended axle shafts. We’ve upgraded the lower arm outer pivot to heavy duty Moog ball joints and 1” uniballs for the upper arm outer pivot. This allows for superior strength and increased articulation. The suspension system also accommodates for bump stops to be used with the coil overs if desired. This kit is CAD designed, thoroughly tested, and 100% made in America resulting in a product we’re proud to put our name on!

 Specifications

  • Wheel Travel: 10.5”
  • Amount of Lift: 0-3”
  • Track Width: 3” wider per side
  • Maximum Tire Size: 35”
  • Maximum Backspacing: 4.75”
  • Minimum Rim Size: 17”
  • Bump Stop Size: 2.0” x 2.0”
  • Coil Over Shock Size with Shock Hoop Kit: 2.5” x 8”
  • Coil Over Shock Size: King OEM replacement shocks with the options below

Shocks For the best performance and to achieve the full 10.5” of travel you must purchase our spec built shocks or have them custom built based on our coil over spec sheet. These shocks must be used with shock hoops which requires cutting and welding to the vehicle. For direct bolt on applications King OEM replacement coil overs can be installed. These shocks won’t allow for the full amount of travel. Both pairs of shocks will work with 2WD or 4WD models.  For more dampening the suspension system has the ability to use bump stops along with the coil overs. The use of bump stops will alsorequire welding and modifications to the frame.

Wheel Travel When shopping long travel kits many consumers tend to focus just on travel numbers. This is the reason many companies claim inaccurate numbers or don’t disclose the amount of work involved to achieve these numbers. Our goal is to build a suspension system with the highest amount of wheel travel without requiring major modifications to the vehicle or compromising its overall drivability.

Tire Info When using 35” tires with this kit modifications to the wheel well will need to be made. The firewall pinch weld will need to be folded over and front cab mount needs to be shaved to avoid contact while turning. The upper wheel well will also need to be modified to avoid contact at full bump.

2021 Subaru Forester Sport

Vehicle information, an honestly good dealer.

Getting hard to find new Imprezas. This dealership was easy to work with, and when I need another car I would be happy to come back. Communication with Salesman Dane was very responsive, and when I finally drove to Lewiston to pick the car up there were no surprises. Best of all no dealer markups!

Good cornering and visibility. Sportily boxy.

I like the solid feel of the car and the sturdy and high ride. Good acceleration. It would be a better SUV if the ground clearance was at least 10” or 12”, with the exhaust pipe properly tucked away!

Great sales person and vehicle!

All of the staff I talked with were friendly and helpful. I ended up buying through Peter Gregg, who was fantastic! He followed up on all my questions, online and in person, and never put pressure on me. I highly recommend him as a sales associate! Delivery was ahead of schedule and I love my Crosstrek even more than I expected to.

Spontaneous windshield explosion!

Spontaneous windshield cracked to 2 1/2 feet in just seconds! No stones seen, without warning, bang. The part cost $850.00 more for eye-sight calibration! Subaru dealer said total cost, around $2000!

2021 Subaru Forester Premium

One of the best cars I have ever owned. It drives like a dream, has more get-up-and-go then I ever thought a 4 cyl. could have. I make a 3000 miles trip from Texas to Utah in may and averaged 34 miles per gallon. I would recommend them to everyone.

Beyond satisfied.

This is my third Subaru Forrester. I like the newer safety features and ease of handling. The size is perfect for me, not too small or too big! I would recommend if you’re looking for a midsize vehicle.

subaru forester i got this car from idealauto

[Most satisfied] All imported, all full-time four-wheel drive, horizontally opposed engine. [Most dissatisfied] The car system is too old. Without Carplay, Carlife is also more laggy. [Space] The wheelbase is 2670, and I sit at 1.78 in the front, so there is enough space in the back and plenty of space in the trunk. [Power] It is very easy to overtake within 0-100. [Control] The horizontally opposed engine is blessed with full-time four-wheel drive, and it drives like a car. Braking performance: The automatic brake is a bit sensitive, [fuel consumption] It has only driven more than 300 kilometers. At high speed, the fuel consumption is 12L. Everyone said that if it is within 10, it will fall off after going out for a self-driving tour and running at high speed in the later period.i got this car from idealauto last year ,that was a marvelous experience . that dealer so reliable .

2013 Subaru Forester 2.5X

Perfect pnw ride.

There's a reason you see Subarus everywhere, they're safe, reliable, and comfortable. If you're looking for the perfect city to mountain getaway car, look no further.

2020 Subaru Forester

Happy forester owner.

The Forester is the first SUV I ever owned. It has had a few issues, but the dealership, Kenny Ross in Irwin Pa, has always been top notch in customer service. First issue was the orignal tires went bald after only 10,000 miles. I called Kenny Ross and they said they would contact corporate. Got 4 new tires at no charge. Next issue I did not even know I had. Took it in for an oil change and they tell me I need a new CVT. Didn't know I had a problem. No charge again. Last issue was a radio that kept giving an error message and would not work. Took four visits to isolate the problem, but now have a new radio that brings in more stations. Again for free. Highly recommend the bumper to bumper warranty. Money well spent.

2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium

Great vehicle.

I have owned my 2017 Forester since late 2016. Except for normal maintenance I've had no problems with thr vehicle. All of the warning systems work very well, they have saved me from accidents numerous times. The automatic seat repositioning when some one else has used my is really handy eliminates all the adjusting needed to get the position back to my needs. Traction and controll during winter and bad weather are excellent. My forrester get used like a truck at times. Great overall car.
