Organizing your time, according to the different destinations of your cruise ships journey, can be fun and exciting but also a bit stressful. You need to consider every aspect of each stop. Whether it’s a tender port or arriving directly at the quay, these kinds of details can completely change the time allotted on land. Nearby attractions, restaurant choices, number of people getting off and in the cruise ship at the same time as you, etc., so many things to think about!

But be reassured, we have thought of everything for you for your next visit to Cannes while coming on a cruise ship.

Once on land, get away from this tourist mass and get lost in town with us! Let us tell you the story of Cannes and its Lérins Islands. Let yourself be tempted by a combined tour of Antibes and Cannes ,a  Local Tasting Tour , an E-Bike Tour (can be a combo of Antibes and Cannes as well) or even a simple Walking Tour . Antibes is a well-kept secret city with an authentic feel that most of the cities on the coast envy. Although it is an unmissable stop on the coast, a lot of visitors missed out on it while it’s just a 10min train ride from Cannes.

So don’t worry, we take care of it all for you through our many shore excursion options. In order for you to discover the coast at its best, we have selected around 5 different experiences which can fit in a day excursion.

Option 1: Discover more – Combo of Antibes and Cannes shore excursion

For every arrivals of cruise ships in Cannes, we offer a combo of tours including Cannes and Antibes. Since Antibes is only a few minutes away by train from Cannes, we make possible for you to visit both of them in one day. The idea is to go visit Antibes first and come back to Cannes so we feel safe taking you back to the port in no time without the risk of a train delay, failure or any other transportation issue…

Therefore, we offer the following program:

  • We pick you up at the Cannes’s Old Port
  • Brief walk to the train station : direction Antibes
  • Buying your round-trip train tickets
  • Antibes’s walking tour (duration of 2,5 hours)
  • Provencal picnic (optional)
  • Going back together by train to Cannes (that way you won’t be in Antibes in the afternoon constantly looking at your watch, wondering when you need to get back to Cannes).
  • Walking tour of Cannes (duration 2 hours) to make you visit this beautiful city before dropping you off at your cruise tenders docking area.

Isn’t that beautiful?

You can now fill your day with amazing experiences. This combo of tours is a special offer we make for you. Don’t miss it out!

Option 2: Book a free (tip-based) walking tour in Cannes

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, at 10:30 a.m., we are running a Tip-based Walking Tour in Cannes .

Lasting about an hour and a half, the tour of Cannes will make you see, discover and hear everything there is to know about this city full of history.

Our professional local guide will show you all the best spots, shops, and restaurants. We also bring you to the best panoramic view where to take the best photos. Since we only tour with small groups (maximum of 20 people), it gives the guide the opportunity to pay more attention to each of the travellers. In order to answer to any question you may have while walking around, we can stop in some of the smaller boutique and handicraft shops that would not be possible with bigger groups.

Know more about this tour and book it right here.

Option 3: Book a Food Tour in Cannes

A tasting tour is probably the best way to discover a new culture with all of its senses. For your shore excursion in Cannes, book a food tour that will bring your through the city and its flavours under the precious guidance of your local and fun guide.

It’s a perfect combination of eating, drinking, tasting, seeing, learning and immersing yourself in Cannes.

We offer the tour on Wednesday, Friday and sometimes Sunday (but dates can vary so make sure you check on our calendar) or you can also reach us directly for a customized offer with a private tour on the day and time who suits you the most, at the time it can also work with our partners of course.

Option 4: Book an E-Bike Tour (or a combo E-bike with Antibes and Cannes)

For the people who are up for a bit more of an active tour, let’s go on a ride and reach the top of Cannes and its amazing views over the Lerins Islands!

Join a public Cannes E-Bike tour (can also be a private combo of Antibes and Cannes). Check out the dates on our calendar, we are not running public tours every day unfortunately.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us so we can create a perfect ride through Cannes and its surroundings.

Option 5: Book a Private shore excursion with one of our local guides

This option is probably the cherry on top of the cake!

Book a private tour with us, either a e-bike tour (can be a combo also of Antibes and Cannes), a tasting tour or a walking tour , and get to do everything at your pace. We make sure to come get you at the port and bring you back to wherever you want.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us so we can create a perfect visit of Cannes and its surroundings.

Why booking a tour with us?

To decarbonize your trip on cruise ships.

First of all, WhatToDoRiviera promotes eco-tour , which can be a good opportunity for you to decarbonize your trip. Even if your trip on a cruise ship is ecologically expensive, take advantage of your time on land to compensate and alleviate your guilt. Our ecological conscience is contagious and you will feel much lighter in our company!

Much more affordable and convenient

Indeed, the shore excursions sold on cruise ships are very expensive for an unauthentic experience and not the best quality of service you deserve. Despite their good intentions and knowledge of the places planned to stop, nothing beats being accompanied on land by a local. Only they can share with you the best hidden gems of each city and some real good fun facts. Ranging from the best Socca artists to the most delicious Pan Bagnat and passing by the queen of the pies, the tarte tropézienne, the addresses not to be missed during your shore excursion are in the hands of the inhabitants of the region.

Also, we understand your needs and know that you wish to be able to visit the city and have some free time to walk around on your own. Cannes is known for its numerous shops and boutiques, from the most luxurious ones to the most local ones. Either you want to have a bit of time for shopping or just enjoying a long break for lunch , you need a flexible shore excursion. But the tours organized from the cruise lines are not so convenient. They are often too long and do not leave you free time.

Therefore, WhatToDoRiviera promotes quality over quantity, which is exactly what you need. The shore excursions sold on cruise chips are made for big groups (often around 50 people).  Indeed, you’re experience on land is going to be impacted. If it’s too crowded, you won’t be able to understand the guide and will maybe get lost.

Avoid any confusion and get a tour worth your short time on land in Cannes!

Authentic and unique

Visiting a town through the eyes of a local is just priceless. More connections, more true information, tips for where to go eat lunch and eat dinner , it only increases the quality of the precious time you have to spend in the city of Cannes. Better to enjoy it in an authentic and unique way, isn’t it!

Meet new people

Since you’re spending a few days with the same hundreds or thousands of people, better go out and meet some new friends! This brings a breath of fresh air to each of your days, a wind that is likely being loaded with the sun of the French Riviera and vitamin D! Joke aside, it gives a true meaning to your cruise. Learning about the culture of a city is meeting and connecting with the people who live it, transmit it and maintain it for hundreds of years.

The people you meet are often what marks a trip the most, believe me as a great traveler. Places stay in the same place and don’t change, but humans come and go. And those who have marked us the most win a special place in our hearts and in our minds, which will remain etched forever. And it is THAT feeling that will make you feel a little nostalgic at the end of a journey. Positive nostalgia I agree, which will lead you to share your best moments with your loved ones on your return from the cruise while looking a the little gift souvenir that we have left you.

coming down from cruise ships in port of cannes

The flow of boats arriving at the port of Cannes can be dizzying. The fleet of

  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • MSC Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • TUI Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Costa Cruises
  • Star Clippers
  • Virgin Voyages

stop at various times and days on the French Riviera. These impressive boats arriving in the port of Cannes must dock via the tender port. So you have to plan the time to get down and back, especially when you are hundreds or thousands of people. Make sure to get your activities sorted in advance before arriving in Cannes.

Looking forward to meeting you on the French Riviera during your journey on your cruise ships.

For public tours, you can see availabilities and book directly here .

It is also possible to contact us for a walking, tasting or e-biking tour outside those times and days. We give our best to make “Everything” possible. Do not hesitate to email us or simply to say hello on our social networks , see you soon!

Cannes Old Town - Le Suquet

Welcome to Cannes cruise port, France! (Post updated: March 2024)

The port of Cannes is another paradise on the French Riviera for the rich and famous, renowned for its international film festival, global trade fairs, luxurious hotels, restaurants and beautiful sandy beaches.

Cannes Cruise Port

There are no docking facilities for large cruise vessels in the port of Cannes.

Cruise ships anchor in the Bay of Cannes and the port authorities provide the tender boats to transfer the cruise passengers to Cannes Old Port ( Vieux Port de Cannes ).

Old Port is located in the city center, within a short walking distance from Promenade de la Croisette, Palais des Festivals et des Congrès and Le Suquet, the old town of Cannes.

Old Port is a picturesque place where you’ll see many yachts and boats. There is also a ferry terminal here, a quay for ships of up to 150 m long (with a maximum draft of 5 meters) and a terminal with modern facilities including a tourist information office, currency exchange, bus/car parking, taxis and more.

8 Amazing Things to Do in Cannes Cruise Port

Cannes is absolutely beautiful and worth taking a walk around, as all major attractions are located within walking distance of the cruise terminal.

However, if you want to explore outside the city, head to one of the famous French Riviera destinations such as Nice, Monaco, Monte Carlo, or Antibes.

Before I share the best things to do in Cannes, I invite you to grab your copy of the “ Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide” , the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports (including Cannes) , packed with practical information, expert tips & unforgettable experiences! 1. Cannes City Sightseeing

The renowned Promenade de la Croisette (also known as Boulevard de la Croisette or La Croisette ) is the famous waterfront boulevard that extends 2 km along the city’s coastline.

The boulevard is home to the prestigious Palais des Festivals et des Congrès , a convention center that hosts the Cannes Film Festival, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and the NRJ Music Award.

The famous La Croisette is also home to luxurious hotels (such as Carlton, Majestic, JW Marriott Cannes and Martinez), upscale restaurants and expensive shops that stretch along the road and overlook a beautiful sandy beach.

Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

Besides the glittering La Croisette, Cannes also has its old town named Le Suquet , home to climbing cobbled streets and a medieval town vibe.

Le Suquet is the original fishermen’s residential area with very old houses, some of them more than 400 years old. This area is pedestrianized and packed with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops centered around Rue Saint Antoine and Rue de Suquet.

The old town is hilly and there are the remains of the medieval castle of the monks of Lérins at the top, known as Château de la Castre . The medieval castle is located on Place de la Castre from where you can enjoy the outstanding views of the city and the Bay of Cannes.

It also houses le Musée de la Castre (aka Musée des explorations du monde) in its iconic tower that you can also climb (109 steps) and admire the 360-degree view of Cannes. T

he museum features collections from five continents including primitive arts of Himalaya-Tibet, Oceania, musical instruments of the world (Africa, Asia, Oceania and America), pre-Columbian America and Mediterranean antiquities and also orientalist paintings and objects from the 19 th century.

Next to La Castre, you’ll also find Église Notre-Dame d’Espérance , a historic stone church dating from the 1600s. The area around the castle is absolutely beautiful and if you want to capture the best photos of Cannes – this is the perfect spot!

Cannes, French Riviera

At the bottom of Le Suquet, you’ll also find Marché Forville , an indoor market that sells flowers and fresh local produce where you can indulge in typically French food and enjoy the local vibe.

Cannes also boasts a beautiful sandy Croisette Beach that lines the Boulevard de la Croisette, where you’ll find beach facilities, eateries and cafes. The main beach (Croisette) is located on your right side upon exiting the Old Port, while on the left side you’ll find another less crowded public beach ( Plage du Midi ).

When exploring Cannes, keep in mind that La Croisette is flat and easy to handle, while Le Suquet is cobbled and challenging to climb for people with walking difficulties. It takes only 10 minutes to reach the castle from the Old Port, however, it’s all uphill and there are dozens of staircases to manage.

The gorgeous city of Nice is located 35 km/22 miles (a 45-minute drive) east of Cannes. With its beautiful Promenade des Anglais , Place Masséna , the old town ( Old Nice ) and numerous landmarks, squares, markets, eateries and shops, Nice boasts a Mediterranean vibe and is one of the most visited cities on the French Riviera. 3. Monaco and Monte Carlo

The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state and one of the most prestigious and expensive places on the Côte d’Azur, located 56 km/35 miles (a 1 hour 30 minutes) east of Cannes. It consists of several administrative areas including Monaco City and Monte Carlo, the two most famous destinations of incredible wealth and beauty.

Monaco City sits on “The Rock”, a 62-meter (203 ft) rock overlooking the Port Hercules and the Mediterranean Sea. This is where all major tourist attractions are located, including the Prince’s Palace , Immaculate Conception Cathedral , Oceanographic Museum , St Martins Garden and others.

Monte Carlo , with its iconic Monte Carlo Casino, lies a few kilometers further and attracts gamblers, tourists, rich and famous from all around the world. Read more in detail about Monaco and Monte Carlo in Villefranche (Nice) Cruise Port Guide (+ get useful, practical info and tips)

Monaco marina

This beautiful resort town is located between Cannes and Nice, 13 km/8 miles (a 35-minute drive) west of Cannes port. With its fortified old town, star-shaped Fort Carré , Port Vauban marina with its luxury superyachts and forested Cap d’Antibes peninsula, Antibes ranks among the top-visited destinations on Côte d’Azur.

Juan-les-Pins , situated only a 5-minute drive from Antibes, is another chic resort known for its sandy beaches, waterfront promenade, boutique stores, high-end eateries and Jardin de La Pinède park where the famous summer Jazz à Juan festival takes place.

5. Saint Paul de Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a charming medieval village located 28 km/17 miles (a 1-hour drive) from Cannes cruise port. The hilltop village has long been a favorite place of notable artists, writers, painters and poets who used to come here and seek inspiration.

Today, the village is known for its numerous art galleries and museums (such as the iconic Fondation Maeght ), the 17-century Saint Charles-Saint Claude chapel , historic buildings and cobbled streets filled with traditional eateries, cafes and souvenir shops.

Saint-Paul de Vence

The city of Grasse lies 21 km/13 miles (a 40-minute drive) northwest of the port of Cannes. The city is internationally recognized for its long-established perfume industry and perfumeries such as Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard that offer workshops and guided tours.

While in Grasse, don’t miss out to visit  Musée International de la Parfumerie (MIP) and Grasse Cathedral , located only a 5-minute walk from each other.

The medieval hilltop village of Èze is located 54 km/33 miles (a 1-hour drive) east of Cannes port, between Nice and Monaco. It is a typical tourist village dotted with medieval old houses, narrow cobblestone streets, art galleries, shops, eateries and cafes.

While in Eze, make sure you visit the Chapelle de la Sainte Croix dating from the 14th century and Jardin Botanique d’Èze , a botanical garden known for its collection of cacti and succulents, as well as its magnificent panoramic views of the French Riviera.

8. Îles de Lérins

The Lérins Islands are an archipelago that consists of four islands off the coast of Cannes, located a 15-minute ferry ride from Quai Laubeuf in Cannes Old Port. The Île Sainte-Marguerite (Saint Margaret Island) and the Île Saint-Honorat (Saint Honorat Island) are the two largest ones, while the other two are uninhabited.

Saint Margaret is the largest island famous for its Fort Royal , the imposing 17th-century fortress with prison cells in one of which the mysterious “Man with the Iron Mask” was held in the same century. Fort Royal nowadays houses Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea) featuring items recovered from ancient Roman and Saracen shipwrecks.

Saint Honorat is the second-largest island and is known for the  Abbey of Lérins and the 15th-century fortified monastery where you can buy various monastic goods, including wine and olive oil produced on the island.

The ferries to Lérins Islands usually depart hourly from Cannes harbour. If you decide to visit the islands, I highly suggest you ask for more information at the tourist information office in the port.

Located on the French Riviera, Cannes is known around the world for its film festival and as being the playground of the wealthy and famous. It started out in the 2nd century BC as a simple fishing village. In 1835, Lord Henry Brougham, former Lord Chancellor of England, built a grand villa named Villa Eleonore Louis. This attracted the English aristocracy who also had to have winter homes in Cannes. By the late 1800s, a casino was operating and by the end of the century, railroads linked Cannes with the outside world. The early 1900s saw the building of grand hotels including the Carlton, Majestic, Martinez, and more casinos. Highlights, many of them part of our Cannes Shore Excursions, of the city include the Promenade de la Croisette, the main boulevard that separates the sea from endless blocks of luxury hotels and high-end boutiques.

Cannes Cruise Port Guide

A stop in Cannes from a Mediterranean cruise will take you to a city that blends the excitement of Hollywood with the Old World beauty of Southern France. Cannes has come a long way since its days as a tiny fishing village. Today, the city is best known for the Cannes Film Festival held each May as well as being a playground for the rich and famous. On a Cannes cruise, you can experience the glitz and glam side of the city or opt for exploring some of its history and scenery-focused experiences.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to cannes, boulevard de la croisette.

Get right into the thick of Cannes’ downtown activity with a stroll down Boulevard de la Croisette. Considered to be one of the most fashionable streets along the French Riviera, Boulevard de la Croisette is home to grand and historic hotels, gorgeous French Art Nouveau architecture, upscale boutiques, and gourmet restaurants. Even if you don’t choose to go into any of the shops, you’ll no doubt enjoy the luxe ambiance of the street and the palm trees lining the boulevard.

Le Suquet is the name given to the Old Town area of Cannes, and this picturesque neighborhood is a must-see during a Cannes cruise. In addition to the historic architecture found throughout Le Suquet, part of its charm is accredited to the fact that the Old Town is traffic-free, giving pedestrians ample space to explore Le Suquet’s courtyards, narrow staircases, and old city walls.

Palais des Festivals et des Congrès

If you love Hollywood blockbusters and the world of movie stars, then seeing the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès is a must-do during a Cannes cruise. This opulent building serves as the venue for the Cannes Film Festival each year, and is also used for other events throughout the year, including the G20 Summit.

Notre-Dame de l'Espérance

The Notre-Dame de l'Espérance is an iconic church in Cannes due to it architecture and location atop a low summit in Le Suquet overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The design of the cathedral has a Gothic feel dating back to the 16th century. The exterior of the cathedral is defined by its clock tower. Inside, you’ll find a vaulted ceiling and a 17th century Madonna on the high altar.

Vieux Port means Old Port in France, and it distinctly characterizes the port area located below Le Suquet. Vieux Port is worth visiting for its excellent maritime views that include yachts, sailboats, and the lovely sea. The adjacent neighborhood of Allées de la Liberté, with its historic alleyways, is a charming area to walk around.

Top things to do in cannes, sunbathe on public beaches.

If you’re more of a beach fanatic than a city lover, then you’ll love the sandy beaches lining the coastline of Cannes. Many of the beaches are open to the public and have beach chairs and umbrellas available to rent for the day. Some of the free public beaches in Cannes are Plage de la Casino, which is located off of Boulevard de la Croisette; La Bocca Beach, which has a peaceful vibe with gorgeous coastal views; and Les Rochers beach for underwater adventures like snorkeling.

Visit Private Beaches

In addition to free public beaches, Cannes also has luxurious private beaches, some of which are open to day-trippers who are willing to pay the entrance fee to access them. Once you’re on the beach, you’ll often find restaurants with outdoor dining as well as musical entertainment. Some popular private beaches to visit include the Royal Plage, Bâoli Beach, and Plage Croisette.

Take a Toy Train Tour

A fun way to explore Cannes is on one of the two motorized toy train city tours. These adorable trains depart from the seaward side of Palais des Festivals each morning and take passengers on a 35-minute tour around certain areas of Cannes. One goes around Le Suquet, and the other takes visitors up and down Boulevard de la Croisette and the Rue d’Antibes. During the tour, you’ll be provided with commentary of what you’re seeing, which is provided in eight different languages, including English.

Visit Musée de la Castre

For ancient artifacts and gorgeous views, spend time walking around the Musée de la Castre, a former monastery turned medieval castle that functions as a museum. The building itself is impressive to see, with its formidable architecture and surrounding gardens. From the property’s vantage point atop a hill, you’ll see panoramic views of the Bay of Cannes below. Inside the museum, you’ll find an impressive collection of art and ancient artifacts, from Mediterranean antiquities and ethnographic artifacts to pre-Columbian primitive art and 19th century Provencal paintings. There is a massive array of history and culture to discover within the walls of the Musée de la Castre.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Cannes Cruise Port

You might think that Cannes would be all about French cuisine, but it’s actually Italian cuisine with French influences that the city is known for. Its location just across the Mediterranean from Italy has resulted in Italian flavors in the local food. For a snack, get one of the quintessential French baguettes sold all over the city. For something sweeter, indulge in one of the many decadent pastries found in the bakeries of Cannes, like lemon meringue. If you’re a wine aficionado, try a glass of wine from the nearby Provence region or any of the other world-class wine regions in France.

Culture & History of the Cannes Cruise Port

Cannes was given its name due to the cane reeds that once grew on its shores. The monks of Lérins came to the area in the 4th century and left their mark with the fortifications they built in the 10th century to protect the city from attacks by sea. Napoleon traveled through Cannes during his journeys as well. It wasn’t until 1834, when Lord Brougham visited and decided to build a villa in Cannes, that the city started to become known as a resort destination and not just a port for the fishing industry.

Today, the economy of Cannes is heavily impacted by the tourism industry. Most visitors come during the balmy summer months, though shoulder season is a great time to go when temperatures are cooler. The tourism trade crosses with the film industry in Cannes each May when the city attracts visitors for the Cannes Film Festival, which is considered to be one of the most important film festivals in the world (if not the most important). This Hollywood connection gives Cannes a luxurious vibe, and you’ll find many luxury hotels and casinos along with a strong yachting culture.

Cannes Port Facilities & Location

When you cruise into southern France to spend the day in Cannes, your cruise ship will dock offshore. Cannes is a tender port, so you’ll be transported to the harbor from the ship on a comfortable tender boat. Once you arrive at the tender dock, you’ll find that you’ve been conveniently dropped off within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the Old Town area. In addition, there is a restroom right by the tender dock. For the tourist information office, head five blocks away toward 1 Boulevard de la Croisette, where you’ll find it on the first floor of the Palais des Festivals building.

Transportation in Cannes

Cannes is an extremely walkable city, and many of its top sights are located within the city center. If you do wish to travel farther afield or need assistance getting around the city center, then you’ll have many forms of public transportation you can use, including a local bus system, trains that connect with other nearby towns from the train station by Vieux Port, and boat ferries. In addition, taxis are available for hire. You can even rent bicycles, motorbikes, and cars to get around during your Cannes cruise port of call.

Shopping Near the Cannes Cruise Port

On a Cannes, France cruise, it’s easy to find shopping, since the central shopping areas are all located within walking distance of the port. Visit Rue d’Antibes and Boulevard de la Croisette for upscale boutiques and popular clothing brands, as well as Rue Hoche on which you’ll find the Galeries Lafayette department store. For bargain finds, there is a flea market located at Place Gambetta that runs every morning during high season.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Cannes is the euro, similar to the rest of France. ATMs are located around the city, and you can also find currency exchange offices in the city center, particularly near transportation hubs.

Tipping in France is not obligatory, but many people do so for excellent service. If you do tip, 10% of the total bill is generally considered to be more than enough of a tip to show your appreciation, though it’s rare to leave more than a 20 euro note. Many restaurants include a service charge, but this may or may not go to the server, so it’s common to leave extra cash on the table for the server (as opposed to adding it to a credit card payment method). Many people also tip a couple euros to taxi drivers, or 10% of the fare if it’s a longer ride.

Cannes Cruise Port – Everything You Need To Know

Are you headed towards Cannes Cruise Port on your Mediterranean cruise and need some help planning your day? Then I got you covered!

The Cannes Cruise Ship Port is quite special – since it mostly services via tender boats. I have just returned from my cruise to Cannes, and I know all about it.

To help you get an overview of the port, the city, and the possible shore excursions, I have created this ultimate guide for you!

Let’s get to it!

cannes cruise port yachts floating around in the deep blue sea

Table of Contents

Distance Tender Quay – Le Sequet (Old Town): 500 m (7 min)

Distance Tender Quay – La Croisette: 1000 m (15 min)

The Cannes cruise port is located in the city of Cannes, on the French Riviera. It’s situated in the heart of the city, near the famous Promenade de la Croisette.

The port is used by smaller cruise ships and luxury yachts, as larger ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the port.

The tender quays are only a couple of steps away from the town center and are filled with restaurants, cafés, and shops.

map showing the location of the cannes cruise port and where tender boats dock

If you just want a quick overview of what you can expect on your shore day at Cannes, you are in the right spot. Here are a couple of ideas on how to fill your day in Cannes:

  • Explore Cannes by foot with a walking tour (no transportation needed, free)
  • Take the ferry to Saint Marguerite Island ( around USD 18 pp)
  • Go to Monaco (train, rental car, or organized tour)
  • Go to Saint Tropez (ferry, organized tour)
  • Go to Nice (train, car, organized tour)
  • Tour the French Riviera

How you choose to spend your day in Cannes is up to your preferences and how much time you have. If the shore day is short, I would opt for a walking tour of Cannes or to see the Island of Saint Marguerite. On a longer day, I would personally book a tour of the French Riviera to see all the highlights.

This is a very popular option to spend a day from the Cannes Cruise Port. I have written a designated post about my preferred route of walking through Cannes.

Essentially, I suggest the following stops:

  • Eglisé Notre Dame d’Esperance
  • Marche Forvillé
  • Lunch at Rue Saint Antoine
  • IGY Vieux Port de Cannes
  • Palais des Festivals et des Congrès
  • La Croisette de Cannes

This was the option I chose on my first cruise stop to Cannes, and we were super happy with the itinerary. It took us about 4 hours to complete. This option is completely free.

The ferry to Saint Marguerite Island (Île Sainte-Marguerite) departs from the port of Cannes. It takes off right next to the tender boat quay.

The journey takes about 15 minutes. Prices vary depending on the season, but a round-trip ticket is typically around €18 for adults and €10 for children.

Once on the island, you can explore the Fort Royal, where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned.

The island is also known for its beautiful nature , with marked trails for walking and spots for picnicking. The clear waters around the island are great for swimming and snorkeling.

Monaco is a stunning country with the beautiful city of Monte Carlo right next to France. You might know it from the Formula 1 race or the fancy casinos. To get from Cannes to Monaco, you have several options:

Train: The most convenient way is to take a train from Cannes to Monaco. The journey takes about an hour, and trains run frequently throughout the day. The train station in Monaco is Monaco-Monte Carlo.

Rental Car: If you’re driving, take the A8 motorway. The drive takes about an hour, depending on traffic. Monte Carlo is not known for its amazing parking, so I wouldn’t do that.

Private Transfer or Organized Tour: this is my preferred option, the tour provider will make sure that you are back in time for the ship to leave.

saint tropez street with colorful houses and lots of pink flowers along the way one of the best day trips from cannes cruise port

Saint-Tropez is famous for several reasons, and you should definitely consider visiting from Cannes cruise port.

Saint-Tropez is known for its stunning beaches, particularly Pampelonne Beach , which is lined with trendy beach clubs and restaurants. The town is also famous for its upscale lifestyle, full of fancy clubs, restaurants, and boutiques.

But the town has still retained its old-world charm with its picturesque old port, cobblestone streets, and pastel-colored houses.

The easiest way to go to Saint Tropez is with a ferry . It takes about 2.5 hours from Cannes cruise port. Alternatively, you can book a shore excursion that will take you there.

To visit Nice from Cannes for a day trip, you can take a train, which is the most convenient option. The journey takes around 30 minutes.

Once in Nice, stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais , a picturesque walkway along the Mediterranean coast. Explore the colorful Old Town (Vieux Nice) with its narrow streets, cute little markets, and charming cafes.

Don’t miss the chance to climb Castle Hill for some awesome views of the city and the sea. If you have the time, you can check out the Matisse Museum or the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

stunning view from nice viewpoint over the old post with lots of yachts and some beautiful houses in the harbor

If you can’t decide between all those fabulous options, I suggest you book a guided day tour through the French Riviera. You’ll visit villages like Eze or Villefranche, which are super cute as well.

There are lots of awesome, cruise-friendly tours out there that combine the loveliest spots of the French Riviera from Cannes Cruise Port.

This is slightly more expensive , but if you are not on a budget , I would suggest this option for sure. That way, you get to make the most out of your day on the French Riviera.

This post sums up your options from Cannes Cruise Port. As we have learned, this is a tender port, so you’ll end up right in the middle of the old port.

From there, you can either explore the charming town of Cannes on foot or book one of the guided day trips to Monaco, Nice, Saint Tropez, or Eze I suggested.

Of course, you can also organize these tours yourself. I would kinda advise against that, you don’t want to miss your cruise ship in the evening.

I hope you enjoy Cannes Cruise Ship Port as much as I did. Not sure if you’ll love it? Find out if Cannes is Worth Visiting. An Honest Review

The easiest way to get from Cannes cruise port to Nice is with train or bus. Alternatively, you can book a private transfer or a tour that will take you there.

No, bigger cruise ships can not dock in Cannes. There are a couple of smaller boats that can directly dock in Cannes, but most bigger ships will make use of tender boats.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded

cruise ship tours cannes

A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.

The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.

Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.

“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.

The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.

Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.

“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.

Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.

According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”

Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.

“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.

The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.

After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”

In October, Princess says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US with the company's first-ever Sanctuary Collection, an adult-only lounge exclusive to guests who've booked one of the collection's high-end cabins. These luxurious accommodations comprise 10% of the ship's 2,157 staterooms, including all its suites.

But the Sanctuary's biggest perk arguably isn't the lounge's private pool and restaurant — it's the all-inclusiveness , a rarity among mass-market cruise lines.

It's the Carnival Corp. brand's latest appeal to ultra-luxury cruisers

Mass-market cruise lines like Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian typically follow the " budget airline " strategy: charge a cheap base fare and offer plenty of irresistible up-charged amenities (like specialty restaurants, as is the case of Sun Princess).

It's a stark contrast to the high-end cruise industry, where all-inclusivity is often considered the standard.

For example, luxury cruise line Explora Journey's fare includes alcoholic beverages, WiFi, and access to the spa — amenities that would typically cost extra on ships like Sun Princess. On Regent Seven Seas , all this, plus excursions, pre-cruise hotels, and roundtrip flights are also included in the cost to sail.

Over the last few years, Princess has begun following in these high-end cruise lines' foosteps.

In 2022, it launched Princess Premier, an optional inclusive package covering amenities like WiFi, drinks, some upcharged restaurants, and workout classes. It's the same package Sanctuary Collection guests would get, along with the private restaurant and adult-only lounge with cabanas, a pool, and private events.

The exclusive lounge concept is nothing new. Royal Caribbean's two largest cruise liners have a "neighborhood" exclusive to suite guests. The same applies to Norwegian, Celebrity, and MSC Cruises' vessels.

However, while these competing retreats offer perks like drink packages, WiFi, or private restaurants, none are as "inclusive" as Princess'.

In 2024, Sun Princess' Sanctuary cabins start at more than $3,000 per person for a weeklong Caribbean cruise in mid-December. To compare, the cheapest interior cabin for the same itinerary starts shy of $700 per person.

The cruise line says its next ship, Star Princess, which will debut in late September 2025, will also carry the Sanctuary Collection.

Following in the footsteps of high-end, all-inclusive cruise lines could be a wise decision for Princess. These luxury vacations at sea have become increasingly popular as travelers continue to spend big on their trips.

Like Princess, expedition cruise company HX recently shifted to an all-inclusive model as well.

Back on dry land, hotel giants like Hyatt and Marriott have also seen a boom in these "everything free" resorts .

Apparently, every vacationer — whether on water or solid ground — just wants one thing: stress-free poolside lounging with bottomless drinks.
