Tour Our Trains

Tour our trains.

Take a virtual tour of our trains. Our virtual tours provide a unique opportunity to see what our trains offer, from the comfort of your own home, or on your device while you travel. They are a great visual source of information on our service offerings. They can help you to prepare for your journey so that when the time comes to travel, you're ready to go. You'll find tips for navigating the virtual tours further down this page.

Please note that we have presented our trains as accurately as possible, however changes to our trains are sometimes required for operational purposes.

Our  carriage layout maps  may also be helpful when planning for your journey.

Virtual tours are not an accessible format for everyone, so we have also developed descriptive texts to share information about the facilities and features of the trains. You will find a link to them on each train page below. We are working to deliver information in a variety of alternative formats to meet more people’s needs, including those who are blind or have low vision. If you would like to provide feedback on these text descriptions please email us at  [email protected] .

The tours can be viewed in modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari. Internet Explorer is not supported. The tours can also be accessed on mobiles and tablets, where the touchscreen offers extra functionality while exploring the tours.

You can use your keyboard, mouse or touchscreen to move through the tour.

There is a ‘help’ section that can be accessed at the bottom right corner of the tours. This section provides more information about how to navigate the tours.

Click on the coloured circles throughout the trains (‘Mattertags’), or tap your screen if you are on a mobile device or have a touchscreen, to find out more about the train’s features.

You can view the train tours in ‘dollhouse’ view by clicking on the 3D drawing icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. Alternatively, you can view the tour in 'floorplan' view by clicking on the flat drawing icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. The floorplan and dollhouse views can help you to move around the train to a specific location of interest.

Use the ‘measure’ tool by clicking on the tape measure icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. This tool should only be used as an estimate. You can press the cross icon at the top right of the tour to exit from the measure tool. We have provided useful dimensions and measurements in the tours to assist people who require information about the spaces and onboard facilities to plan their travel.

You can view the tour in 'autoplay' mode by selecting the play symbol on the bottom left corner of the tour. This will take you through the tour automatically, without needing to click through and will show you highlights of the train in the pictures below. Please note that some people with sensory issues may have difficulty viewing the tours in this mode due to the speed of the camera turns.

You can close the highlights reel by clicking on the 'down arrow' at the bottom left corner.

Access Fullscreen view by clicking on the frame icon. When viewing images in a Mattertag, it may be easier to view and move around them in Fullscreen view. In still images, make them bigger by clicking on the image when your mouse changes to a magnifying glass.

As you are moving through the tours, some areas of the tours may appear slightly out of alignment, this is due to the combination of reflective surfaces and narrow spaces. The alignment corrects as you continue through the train.

You'll find more tips for each train on the dedicated virtual tour pages, above.

Queensland’s top 7 rail journeys

qld train tour

With 4000km of regional track, Queensland Rail Travel can deliver you all the way to Cairns in the state’s north, Longreach, Charleville and Mount Isa in the west and even to tourism hotspots in the Far North and the Gulf Savannah. You can also take advantage of its RailBus connections to explore don’t-miss coastal havens such as Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. With Queensland Rail Travel you can leave the car at home, and enjoy the unique luxury of time and space to sit back and enjoy the ever-changing landscapes. Here are our top picks.

SPIRIT OF QUEENSLAND

Brisbane–Cairns (1681km)

This train travels the coast of Queensland from Brisbane to Cairns, a distance of 1681km, in 25 hours and has two travel options – economy seats, which are great if you are stopping along the way, and the RailBed, a spacious seat during the day that folds out to a lie-flat bed at night, with all-inclusive in-seat dining. The train passes through canefields and rainforest and stops at some of the Queensland coast’s biggest regional cities, including Mackay, Rockhampton, Proserpine (the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands) and Townsville.

qld train tour

SPIRIT OF THE OUTBACK

Brisbane–Longreach (1325km)

Launched in 1993 by combining the Capricornian and Midlander train journeys, the Spirit of the Outback travels 1325km between Brisbane and Longreach in about 24 hours. The perfect introduction to outback Queensland, the Spirit takes its passengers deep into the engine rooms of the Queensland economy. It follows the coast to Rockhampton, then turns inland and passes through the heritage mining towns of Blackwater and Emerald, and the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party, Barcaldine, before arriving in Longreach, a town that has been saved from the clutches of a never-ending drought by its burgeoning tourist trade.

qld train tour

Townsville–Mount Isa (977km)

A historic trip from the major northern Queensland port city of Townsville to the mining centre of Mount Isa. Over a leisurely 21-hour journey, covering 977km, the Inlander offers the opportunity to experience the heritage and natural treasures of northern Queensland’s ruggedly beautiful inland.

From Townsville, the train travels through picturesque Charters Towers, across the Great Dividing Range and through the mining towns of Hughenden and Julia Creek, before delivering passengers into Queensland’s dry western reaches. Introduced in 1953, the Inlander was Queensland’s first air-conditioned train.

Being one with the rainforest as you undertake an unforgettable journey is what makes Kuranda Scenic Railway such a must-do experience.

Normanton to Croydon (151km)

Take a journey through frontier country from Normanton to Croydon as you step aboard the iconic Gulflander. Also known as the ‘Tin Hare’, this legendary rail motor is one of the last great characters of the rail world.

Affectionately said to go from ‘nowhere to nowhere’, the Heritage Listed Normanton to Croydon line was never connected to the state rail network and remains the only line in Queensland still measured in miles. From wetlands and grasslands to arid Savannah territory, the Gulflander travels through countryside that most people will never see. This nostalgic rail journey is the perfect way to discover an area steeped in pioneering history and heritage.

As a working tribute to the Gulf of Carpentaria’s early pioneers, the Gulflander is a once in a lifetime experience.

qld train tour

Brisbane to Charleville (740km)

Venture to the natural wonders of Queensland’s southwest outback onboard the Westlander. From Brisbane travel across the Great Dividing Range, through the rich farmlands of the Darling Downs to Charleville, this scenic journey travels through some of the state’s most picturesque outback regions.

THE SAVANNAHLANDER

Cairns–Forsayth (425km)

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

#Peace of Mind Guarantee valid for new bookings confirmed from 10 February until withdrawn. See Booking Conditions for details, inclusions and exclusions. #1 You can choose to postpone your holiday to a future date; since prices vary by travel date some alternative dates may be at a higher price. 7 Must-Try Train Trips Through Queensland

25 January 2021 by brisbanista Leave a Comment

train

Queensland has a distinctive spirit, thanks to a lush coastline bursting with flora and fauna, delicious produce, relaxed locals and adventures aplenty. At Queensland Rail Travel, we believe there’s no better way to explore this and more, than via the magic of a rail getaway. Skip the hassles of traffic or craning for a glimpse through the clouds and instead, view this beautiful part of the world from just outside the window of your long-distance train.

If you are interested in exploring the Sunshine State with the convenience of a train, then here are five different train trips you need to try in your lifetime:

Spirit of Queensland

Operating between Brisbane and Cairns five days a week, the Spirit of Queensland is your answer to taking a quick and relaxing trip away. The relaxation starts the moment you step aboard – enjoy modern and spacious seating, a variety of entertainment options on individual touch screens and delicious meals, prepared by a chef, using Queensland-sourced produce.

Enjoy the nostalgia of rail travel as you put your feet up and unwind in your leather Premium Economy seat, or indulge in the ample space of your innovative RailBed – a conveniently spacious seat by day, lie-flat bed by night. Make friends with fellow passengers from the comfort of your seat, or head to the 24-hour licensed Galley Car for fresh faces and a change of scene.

Throughout your journey, our friendly staff are taking care of the ‘little things’ so you don’t have to and our driver is safely navigating the tracks, to ensure you arrive at your destination, comfortably and happily. Wherever you’re headed, a journey aboard the Spirit of Queensland will get your trip on the right track. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritofqueensland

Spirit of the Outback

The quintessential outback rail adventure starts when you hop aboard the Spirit of the Outback. An overnight journey to remember, you’ll depart bustling Brisbane, meandering through heritage towns over 1,325 km, before arriving in the heart of Longreach. Enjoy the open car layout of economy, settling in with your reclinable seat and footrest, before accessing the economy lounge for a change of scene, or a warming meal from the Shearers Rest Galley.

Travel in a First-Class sleeper and enjoy country-style hospitality, where you’ll find a complimentary amenity bag full of items made and sourced in Queensland, so you can make full use of the showering amenities stationed at the end of each carriage. Head to the Shearer’s Rest, a relaxing communal lounge area exclusive to First Class customers – and the backdrop to many new friendships – or take your tablet to watch the latest onboard entertainment.

Delight in all-inclusive meals as you sit down to linen dressed tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tuck into meals prepared by our chef using the best Queensland produce, inspired by the region. Upon disembarking, explore all that the region has to offer – towering skies, sunburnt earth, a mix of modern and prehistoric points of interest and always, moments you just have to see first-hand to believe. However, you choose to travel aboard the Spirit of the Outback, be sure to pack your camera and a sense of adventure to make the most of this heritage-inspired journey into this fascinating land. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritoftheoutback

Skip the traffic and enjoy fast and convenient access to Queensland’s iconic coastal destinations when you take the Tilt Train. Travelling between Brisbane and Rockhampton, reaching speeds of up to 160km per hour and transporting over 180,000 passengers per year, you can rest assured it’s a reliable means of reaching your destination.

Enjoy your reclinable economy seat and foot rest while you flip through the pages of your complimentary magazine, or watch the onboard entertainment on overhead screens. If you’re heading to the city or up the coast for work, step aboard and enjoy the comfort of a larger Business seat, a complimentary juice and newspaper or, make the most of the travel time and plug your electronics into the power point at your seat – don’t miss a beat! Head to the Galley Car for a pick me up cup of coffee or something light to eat, or wait for the trolley service, so you can enjoy some snacks throughout your journey.

Explore more of Queensland and take the train to stunning destinations such as the Southern Great Barrier Reef – disembark and head to Mon Repos to witness turtle hatchlings making their way to the ocean; explore the delicious and vibrant produce of the Bundaberg Burnett region, or head to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island for a dip in Lake Mackenzie…the choice is yours! Wherever you’re headed or why, whether travelling solo or in a group, the Tilt Train is a convenient value for money means of taking your next business trip or relaxing holiday.

https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/tilttrain

The Inlander

Away from the coast, there’s a world of discovery and adventure ahead. Step aboard The Inlander and explore another part of Queensland’s vast outback. Whether travelling onboard as part of a Mount Isa Discovery Experience package, or following your own itinerary, you’ll find yourself in awe of the sheer space and changing landscapes.

Settle back into your forward facing, reclinable seat and put your feet up using the available footrest, while you dive into the pages of a book or, your complimentary onboard magazine. Whether stopping off along the way or, completing the entire 977km journey, the train is airconditioned for your comfort, and there are showers and amenities at the end of each carriage, so that you arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed. If you’re in need of a change of scene, head to the Lounge for a friendly chat with other travellers.

 If your itinerary allows, we recommend some regional exploration – perhaps you’ll make friends with Hughie, the 7m Muttaburrasaurus and find an impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden? Or spot endangered marsupial, the Julia Creek Dunnart?

Upon disembarking in Mount Isa, explore the town’s prehistoric exhibits at the Riversleigh Fossils Interpretive Centre or go deep underground and tour the coal mines – some of the biggest in the world. The town’s mineral wealth is something to behold – with copper, silver, lead and zinc being mined here. This is truly a trip for those who like to head off the beaten track and uncover a region’s stories. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/theinlander

The Westlander

Jump aboard The Westlander and join us for a relaxing journey into the heart of Queensland’s deep west. As you depart Brisbane, settle into your comfortable seat as you dive into a book or the pages of your complimentary onboard magazine.

Throughout your 777km journey you’ll travel across the ancient Great Dividing Range, through rich farmlands of the Darling Downs, right through to the welcoming town of Charleville. You’ll be passing some of the state’s most established wine producing regions and rich grazing country. Whilst onboard, you can head to the Lounge for a friendly chat and change of scene.

When you arrive in Charleville, head to the Cosmos Observatory during the day to view sunspots and solar flares, heading back at night to marvel at the twinkling stars scattered above – view distant stars, planets and nebulae! Visit one of the region’s most vital functions – the Royal Flying Doctor Service and meet some of the amazing people that keep it running.

For the ultimate outback experiences, acquaint yourself with the ‘Cunnamulla Fella’, immortalised by Australia’s favourite bush poet, Slim Dusty… And before you head home, try your luck fossicking at Quilpie’s renowned boulder opal! Jump aboard The Westlander and embark on a journey of discovery. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/thewestlander

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Uncover one of the world’s great railway journeys aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway. Enjoy relaxing in refurbished vintage carriages as the train winds up the mountain to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest.

Travelling across 55 bridges and through 15 handmade tunnels, you’ll learn what an engineering feat the railway is, a proud testament to North Queensland’s pioneers.

You’ll travel past steep ravines and see lush vegetation so close you could almost reach out and touch it. You’ll pass the impressive heights of Stoney Creek and stop at the grand Barron Gorge Falls. Enjoy the wares of Kuranda locals in the village centre or wander off on one of the walking trails nearby.

Travel in classic Heritage Class or upgrade to Gold Class and delight in locally-sourced food and beverages, as you wind your way up or down the mountain – however you do it, it’s a rail journey not to be missed. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/kurandascenicrailway

Take a step into Queensland’s pioneering past and journey aboard the Gulflander as it travels the Heritage-listed Normanton to Croydon line. Affectionately said to go from ‘nowhere to nowhere’, the line was built to connect the once bustling river port of Normanton with the rich goldfields of Croydon.

To combat seasonal impacts, the line was laid with patented steel sleepers – to this day it retains most of the original sleepers laid between 1888 and 1891 and is the only railway line in Queensland still measured in miles! Although the gold rush is long past, the Gulflander continues to connect its outback community with vital services and visitors with a fascinating history. Enjoy the treasure trove of history and discovery at charming Normanton Station, wandering amongst displays and vintage locomotives and carriages.

Enjoy stops at Blackbull Siding for a cuppa and to stretch your legs and visit Critter’s Camp to spot the local creepy crawlies… All the while, our Savannah-accredited guide and driver will regale you with their detailed knowledge of local flora and fauna, before delighting you with tales of the region’s colourful characters!

If you can, turn it into a bigger adventure and explore Karumba – enjoy a sunset cruise on the Gulf of Carpentaria, learn something new at Karumba’s Barramundi Discovery Centre or, try your luck with a spot of fishing! Whether travelling solo, in a group or with your favourite companion, the Gulflander and Normanton to Croydon line is a ‘must-do’ experience. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/the-gulflander

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend travel insurance at the time of booking.

While the train has no practical weight limit for your luggage – you must be able to lift and carry your own luggage.  This includes carrying up a flight of stairs and carrying over open ground.   Please note that this is an outback tour and that paved areas are the exception rather than the rule (ie. wheeled bags are not an acceptable alternative to carrying your luggage).

Generally we ask our passengers to limit their luggage to  one piece  (approx 20Kg) plus a smaller carry-on bag (ie. handbag).

Fitness to travel

By booking with us, you acknowledge and agree that you are fit to travel independently, unless you have fully informed us of any special requirements at the time of making your booking and we have agreed to provide the special assistance to you.

We require that all our passengers self-assess their fitness to travel -we have an online guide here at  http://www.savannahlander.com.au/

If you think that there may be an issue – please contact us.  We do have a DDA Compliant railmotor and can suggest changes to your tour that may assist with your specific needs.

The Savannahlander is strictly a non-smoking service for all types of cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes. This includes smoking in the toilet area and within 5 meters of the doorways and eating areas.

All our accommodation providers operate non-smoking rooms and facilities, although there may be provision for smoking in a Designated Outdoor Smoking Area (DOSA). Please make your enquiry direct to the accommodation provider when you arrive as to the location of the DOSA.

If you would like to smoke while travelling with us you may do so when the train stops for morning tea, lunches etc. Please talk to your friendly driver about the timing and where you can go to smoke at the specific stop.

Please note that we take the comfort and safety of our passengers seriously, passengers found smoking on the train may be asked disembark the train and leave the tour. In the event that you are removed from the tour there are no refunds available for the unused portion of your tour package.

Disability Access, Special Assistance, Medical and Dietary Requirements

We will try to ensure that any special requests or requirements noted at the time of booking can be met by the Savannahlander.

Please advise any dietary requirements including diabetic, coeliac meals; allergies etc. to ensure the necessary arrangements are made before your arrival.

Please note that all meals are catered for by third parties and while all care is taken we cannot be responsible for the meals that are served. Most providers are happy to provide alternative meals for breakfast and dinners, but morning tea and lunch selections may be more limited.

Please also be aware that you are travelling in remote areas with limited medical access and facilities. Your care in this matter should be related to the severity of your allergic response.

If your reaction is manageable and regarded more as an “intolerance” then you should be fine. You may want to consider bringing some appropriate snacks with you in case you cannot find a suitable morning tea or lunch option available to your needs. There is an “Esky” on the train in which you can keep things cool.

If your allergic response is severe (such as anaphylactic shock), then you may need to consider bringing food with you for your meals. Our providers are happy to facilitate your needs in this respect but cannot provide segregated food preparation environments which may carry a risk of cross contamination. An example is that the chopping boards and utensils may have been used previously with other foodstuffs. Please contact us if you intend to do this.

If you do have the potential for severe reactions, please advise us of the nature of your allergic reaction and access to any medications that you may have with you to treat severe reactions (ie. Epi-pen). On boarding the train please inform the drivers of your medical needs and the location of your medication so they may be able to assist in the event that you are not able to.

The tour operates in remote areas which sometimes have limited medical access.  If you have any doubt about your medical needs please contact us prior to booking to discuss how we may assist.

COVID-Safe travel conditions

The safety of our staff and passengers are always of the highest priority for the Savannahlander. The following new procedures and facilities will be in effect for all travel on the Savannahlander:

  • By booking with us you agree that you have not displayed covid symptoms, are currently being tested or currently under quarantine as directed by a health official.
  • If you develop symptoms of Coronavirus prior to departure, please contact our offices as your booking may be deferred as required.
  • If you develop symptom of Coronavirus prior to departure, you agree NOT TO TRAVEL as this poses a high level of risk to our staff and passengers.
  • Boarding and exit only through the rear doors of the front carriage and forward doors of the rear unit. (with the exception of those requiring use of the DDA compliant wheelchair lift);
  • Social distancing will be encouraged;
  • Increase cleaning and sterilisation procedures during train journeys;
  • Hand washing stations will be located on each rail motor and passengers are encouraged to use them;
  • We have reduced the carrying capacity to approximately 50% to allow for social distancing in the seating pattern;
  • There will be a restriction the amount of free movement of passengers during a train journey (ie. no visiting the drivers areas);
  • We have made changes to food preparation and delivery to minimise contact;
  • Changes to luggage handling – passengers will take their bags to the unused seats adjacent to their seating for the day;
  • We will produce and maintain a “contact tracing manifest” ;
  • Face masks will be available for any persons developing a cough who will be provided a mask and required to wear them.

Important Covid-19 Information

Thank you for considering the Savannahlander for your next outback rail adventure. Whilst we aim to provide an amazing outback experience, we hold the safety of our staff and passengers as our primary concern. In light of the ongoing corona virus pandemic we have taken advice and risk assessed our business practices and have come to a considered position on the vaccine status of our passengers.

In 2022 we will require all travellers on our tour packages to be double vaccinated two weeks or more before the date of travel.

We ask for proof of vaccination one month prior to travel and your tour will be cancelled if this is not received two weeks prior to travel. In the case that your travel is cancelled at this stage no refund will be available.

If you have any problems or concerns regarding this policy,  please contact our office .

As in previous years, you will be invoiced prior to departure and full payment will be due one month prior to travel.

Can I leave my vehicle somewhere?

As with a lot of rail travel, you may be driving to your chosen departure point for your journey with us on the Savannahlander.

The good news is that all of the stations along the route have space available for you to park a car.  You should note however that while all care is taken and incidents are very rare that your vehicle is parked at your own risk.

The Cairns central railway station has the provision for FREE parking for travellers on the Savannahlander.  It should be noted that Cairns Central has recently moved to “ticket-less parking” which uses cameras to read your vehicle number plates.   To access this service you should do the following:

1) Please note your vehicle registration number on your booking form.  If you change vehicles between the time of booking and the time of travel you will need to  contact our office  to update the registration details.

2) On the day please park your car as normal.

3) When you exit the parking facility simply proceed to the exit and the gate will open for you.

Please note- if you do not provide registration details you will need to pay at the pay-station prior to leaving the carpark.

Please note that if you have a large vehicle, motor-home or RV that you may need to make alternate arrangements as not all parking facilities can accommodate larger vehicles.  We would advise that you visit the station prior to departure to check or make alternative arrangements.
