US Visa Wait Times in India: The Earliest Appointment for B1/B2 visa is Expected by March 2024

“I have not visited my parents for two years. I shelved travel plans because of pocket-burning airline tickets to India after the resumption of regular international flights early this year. I was blessed with a baby recently. I wish either my parents or the in-laws to be with us at the current phase of our parenthood. But no luck with B2 visa appointment dates for them. I desperately keep logged in on the US Embassy India website hoping to get a slot available; however, we are in shock that the earliest appointment is expected by March-April 2024,” Aparna Kaushik from Chicago said to Sourav Agarwal, the Editor of Travel Beats.

International travel restrictions have been lifted. Country-specific entry regulations have abated. Airlines have restored their service frequency to the pre-pandemic times. But visa appointment delays continue to be a nightmare for Indians seeking interview slots for the US visitor visa, B1/B2. Particularly, the first-time applicants are at the mercy of the US Embassy and Consulates grappling with the mounting backlog of applications and the staffing shortage in India. If sources are to be believed, the backlog has exceeded 4 lakh Indian applicants awaiting interview slots for B2 and other US visas.

“Early this month we posted on our Twitter page that the US Embassy India would resume in-person tourist visa appointments from September. Surprisingly, in only two weeks, the slots got booked until April 2023. Now more than 500 days is the average wait time for the US visitor visa appointment dates in India, according to the US State Department website,” said the chief customer relations officer of Indian Eagle , a leading air-ticketing partner of Indians in America.

It means that if you apply for a US visitor visa now, your chances for getting an appointment before 2024 are minimal to none . This is nothing short of a nightmare for the first-time applicants who are required to appear for an in-person interview and biometrics. However, the wait time is relatively shorter for B2 visa renewals and those planning a business trip to the United States.

“Though the US visa wait times vary from consulate to consulate in India, this is the worst that I have ever seen since the September attacks 2001,” said David Bier, the associate director of immigration policy at Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank in Washington DC.

The US Embassy in New Delhi has B2/B1 visa appointment dates 582 calendar days away and students visa slots some 470 days away. The US Consulate in Mumbai expects 580 calendar days to be the estimated waiting time for a US visitor visa appointment. 520 calendar days is the likely wait time for the same at the US Consulate in Hyderabad, whereas a US student visa appointment is 477 days away. In Kolkata, the US Consulate has the wait time spanning 585 calendar days from now for B1/B2 interview slots. The average wait time is 510 calendar days for B1/B2 visa appointment dates at the US Consulate, Chennai, according to the US Department of State website.

Usually, if someone from India wants to visit the USA for tourism, they need to obtain a US tourist visa, also known as a B2 tourist visa. There are two main types of visas for the US: one for a short-term visit (called a nonimmigrant visa ) and another for permanent residence (called an immigrant visa).

The next question that might come to your mind is whether you need a sponsor for a US tourist visa while applying from India. The answer is no; a sponsor is not required to apply for a B2 tourist visa. Even if you don't have any friends, family, or relatives there, you can still apply for a tourist visa to visit the US.

If you have a stable financial background and meet other visa requirements, obtaining a US tourist visa without a sponsor is easily achievable. However, if you have someone in the US who can sponsor you, you can always request them to provide an invitation letter  or sponsorship letter . It's optional, though.

The current cost for a US tourist visa from India is 12,000 INR per person. However, this amount may change in the future. Along with the tourist visa fee, you need to prove your financial stability by demonstrating available funds in your account. It's advisable to show a minimum of 3 lakh rupees in an Indian account associated with the applicant.

New Delhi: 253 days

Mumbai: 268 days

Chennai: 260 days

Kolkata: 240 days

Please note that these wait times can vary significantly depending on when you plan to visit and where you are applying from. India has four visa application centers: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. You can always check the current wait times  on the USCIS website.

You can change your appointment date up to four times (not counting the first one) without any problem. But if you cancel the fourth attempt, you have to wait for 90 days before picking a new date.

Moreover, after you schedule your visa interview, you can choose to change the appointment to an earlier date if there are available slots. There's a good chance you might find an earlier date, so it's a good idea to keep an eye out.

You can not see the current US visa appointment available dates without completing the DS-160 form and paying the appointment fee. You need to complete the DS-160 form, and pay the MRV fees, and using that receipt number you can move forward to make an appointment for biometrics and an interview.

US Tourist Visa Requirements

For a US tourist visa application from India, there are five main requirements:

A valid original Indian passport

DS-160 confirmation page

MRV fee payment receipt, Appointment confirmation page

Two passport-size photographs. Generally, it's not required since the photograph is taken during biometrics. However, it's good to keep them just in case the service center faces any technical issues.

Other supporting documents depending on the purpose of travel like Identity, address proofs, employment letters, financial proofs (bank statements), marriage certificates, family photographs, etc.

Always keep in mind three things for a successful Tourist Visa to the USA from India:

Clearly state the purpose and duration of your trip.

Show your intention to leave the United States after your visit.

Demonstrate your capability to cover all the costs of your trip.

To successfully obtain a B2 tourist visa, it's important to know why you're going (purpose) and how long you plan to stay (duration). Clearly understand your purpose, whether it's for tourism, to see family, or for medical treatment, and make sure to have enough documents to support your reasons when asked during the interview.

Keep in mind that you can stay in the US for up to six months in one go. Despite this, always express your intention to leave the country once your visit is over (even if you are not completing six months).

If you're obtaining a US tourist visa for medical treatment:

Get a note from your local doctor explaining your illness and why you need treatment in the United States.

Ask a U.S. doctor or medical place to write a letter saying they can treat you. They should also mention how long the treatment will take and how much it will cost, covering doctor fees, hospital charges, and other medical costs.

If you're obtaining a US tourist visa to visit family or friends:

It's a good idea to have a sponsor letter with you. Although no one might ask you directly, having this letter can support what you say about visiting someone. Here is an example .

If you're obtaining a US tourist visa for tourism or social events:

Know the places you plan to visit, where you'll stay, and how long you'll be at each place. If you have a travel itinerary, it's a good idea to keep it during the B2 visa interview.

Show your ties to India, things that connect you to your home country like your job, family, investments, etc. You can use documents such as lease agreements, utility bills, employment letters, tax returns, bank statements, recent pay slips, marriage certificates, and photos that show immediate family members in your home country. Letters from family members confirming your relationship can also help.

Related: Things to know about the USA

Show proof that you or someone else will pay for your travel, medical bills, and stay in the US. This could be your bank statements, proof of income or savings, or official copies of tax returns from either you or the person/organization covering the trip.

Can I look for a job in the us with a tourist visa?

People with business and tourist visas can now apply for new jobs in the US. You can even go for job interviews with the same visa. However, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) says you must change your visa before you start working.

Can I sponsor my friend to the USA for a B2 visa?

Simply put, you can't apply for a B2 visa for someone else. Each person must apply for their visa, and they need to go to the interview themselves. But, if you're a U.S. citizen or a green card holder, you can help and support a family member or friend who is applying for a tourist visa.

How long does it take for a B2 visa to be approved?

Once you send in the DS-160 form, it usually takes USCIS about 1-2 months to review and process the B-2 visa application.

Indian techie gets US Green Card after 9-year wait, slams H-1B system

An indian techie got a us green card, which allows permanent residency, after 9 years of wait. he explained how the h-1b visa system was difficult and caused problems for skilled workers. the person deleted the post after the issue "blew up". a million indians are stuck in the green card backlog..

Listen to Story

permanent residency in the US

  • An Indian techie got permanent residency after a 9-year wait
  • Thousands of Indian engineers and researchers working in the US without Green Cards
  • Over 1.2 million Indians waiting for Green Card and backlog will reach 2.1 million by 2030

An Indian-origin techie took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his harrowing experience of obtaining a Green Card after living in the US for over nine years. He highlighted the drawbacks of the H-1B visa system, describing it as "incredibly restrictive". The Indian techie's case is among hundreds of thousands of highly skilled professionals from India who are facing extremely long wait times, potentially decades, to gain permanent residency in the United States.

The techie, who works with an internet giant, explained his Green Card ordeal in a long chain of posts after getting permanent residency status after a wait of 3,505 days.

"After 3505 days in this country [US], I'm finally a "permanent resident". I can travel without constantly having to worry about my visa stamp or my I-94 date or a million other things," the Indian techie wrote on X.

He has now deleted the thread and made his X account private after his post went viral and the issue "blew up".

Despite his long wait, he counted himself as a "fortunate" person. He said he was very fortunate as countless talented engineers and researchers have been working in the US for years without Green Cards.

H-1B VISA SYSTEM IS RESTRICTIVE: INDIAN TECHIE

In his X thread, which he has now deleted, the Indian-origin techie calls the H-1B visa system "restrictive" and explains why he calls it so.

"A H-1B visa is incredibly restrictive. You need a new visa stamp every few years from the US consulate outside the country. If you don't have one, you cannot enter the US. I have never been able to attend a single conference because of this,” he said.

He further listed usual situations that turned out to be problematic for people with H-1B visas.

"I have friends who couldn't travel to say goodbye to their loved ones after they died because they were on a H1-B visa and couldn't get a visa appointment. I cannot overstate how inhumane this is," he added.

Permanent residency in the US has remained a pipe dream for many Indians. To address the issue, multiple bills are being addressed in the Senate and Congress. However, immediate relief seems unlikely.

"There have been multiple bills in the Senate and Congress that attempt to address this, but it has remained a pipe dream. If America hopes to continue attracting the best talent in the world, it should first take a good look at how it treats the talent it already has," the Indian-origin techie wrote on X.

When the Indian techie broke the news that he got the green card, many X users asked him how he obtained permanent residency in just nine years, considering there is typically a decade-long wait.

"People have been asking me how I got it in 9 years if the wait is decades long. I applied under the EB1 category, which is a little bit faster. But that's beside the point. It's inhumane to keep people in a state of limbo for decades regardless of visa category," he said.

The right wing also trolled "asking why he left India".

INDIANS FACE WAIT TIME OF YEARS FOR GREEN CARD

More than a million Indians are stuck in a long queue for US green cards with many professionals waiting for over a decade. Data from the USCIS show over 1.2 million Indians waiting , with significant backlogs in EB-1, EB-2 and EB-3 categories.

These long wait times can cause problems for both individuals and their families, and can also make it harder for the US to attract and keep talented workers, says the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) after analysing the USCIS data.

The NFAP analysed USCIS data and found 1,259,443 Indians in the top three employment-based immigration categories as of November 2, 2023.

Indians' longer waits mean they're more likely to have spouses and children, leading to an underestimation of dependents.

New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Visitors: Key Questions Answered

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 23rd, 2024 at 5:39 AM EDT

Destinations value Indian travelers, but lengthy visa processing times lasting months act as significant deterrents. The adoption of these new regulations by European authorities reflects a proactive effort to tackle these concerns, aiming to boost tourism flow.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The European Commission has introduced a new visa “cascade” regime for Indian nationals applying for Schengen visas in India. This regime looks to offer longer-term, multi-entry Schengen visas, based on the applicant’s travel history.

Indian travel agents had been complaining of Schengen visa delays as a major challenge to the summer travel rush from India.

  • How does one qualify for the longer duration visas?

The European Commission can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa after a traveler “has obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.” This demonstrates a positive travel history and compliance with previous visa regulations.

Subsequently, after granting the two-year visa, authorities may issue a five-year visa if the passport has has adequate validity remaining.

  • What benefits do holders of these extended visas enjoy?

During the validity period of these visas, holders can enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals within the Schengen area, allowing for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

  • Which countries are part of the Schengen area?

The Schengen area comprises 29 European countries, including 25 European Union member states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland are also part of the Schengen area.

  • Are there any restrictions or conditions to these visas?

Schengen visas do not grant the right to work within the Schengen area and are for short stays only. Additionally, the visas are not purpose-bound, providing flexibility for travel within the specified period.

Industry Take

Skift also spoke to players in the Indian outbound travel industry to understand what has changed in the new Schengen visa rules.

  • How is this different from the earlier visas that Schengen countries offered? Don’t they already offer multi-entry visas with longer duration to Indians?

Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Pathfinders Holidays, said there was no standard policy of Schengen states for issuing these long-term visas earlier. Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain usually issued long-term visa, but it was all subjective. “With this new policy it should be a standard rule now,” Vakharia said.

  • Travelers mainly complain of longer processing times, has that changed?

Here too, there is no standard processing time as it varies from country to country, according to Vakharia. “France and Spain have been processing visas within four days, and then there’s Croatia, which takes 60 days,” he said.

Processing time will not change as of now, it will take time for the visa rules to be enforced, said an industry source, while highlighting that the visa would be especially useful for corporate travelers.

What Promoted The Move?

Speaking on the possible motivations, Vakharia acknowledged various reasons, including administrative capacity constraints at embassies to cater to the huge inflow of applications.

“As there is an overwhelming demand from Indian travelers, the process of securing visa appointments has posed significant challenges , especially for travelers residing in cities lacking VFS Global centers,” he said.

The European Commission said in an statement that the decision reflects the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, aimed at fostering comprehensive cooperation on migration policy. Facilitating people-to-people contacts is a key aspect of this agenda, acknowledging India’s importance as an EU partner.

The decision also reflects a realization of the strong economic benefits derived through the spending power of Indian tourists. As Vakharia aptly puts it, “Why let go of the Golden Indian Goodie Bag?”

For family-based visa applications:

The appropriate Form I-864 Affidavit of Support for each financial sponsor along with:

  • NOTE: The IRS tax transcript is not the same as a tax return;
  • NOTE: NVC strongly recommends the submission of tax transcripts since they typically provide the information necessary for an evaluation of completeness of the Affidavit of Support and result in more efficient processing.
  • If you are unable to submit the IRS tax transcript, you may alternatively submit a photocopy of both the sponsor’s (1) most recent U.S. federal income tax return, and (2) all W-2s documenting the income reflected on the federal income tax return.
  • If applicable, you must also include an I-864A for each household member contributing income to meet the financial support requirement;

Interview Guidelines

Sending documents to the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai

If your application requires additional documentation, you may submit the documents to any of our 11 document drop-off locations . Do not send documents to the consulate by mail.

If you are requested to personally return to the consulate with additional documents or information, you must schedule a new appointment online at ustraveldocs.com (please select the “Embassy/Consulate Appointments” option).

Rescheduling or cancelling your interview

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please email [email protected] . There may be a significant wait before the next available appointment, so please attempt to attend the date already assigned.

  • For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa became available within the month you have been scheduled by NVC.
  • DV applicants should be aware that visas are numerically limited and must be issued by September 30 of the program year. There is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview. Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you request to reschedule your interview.

Please note: You need to register your original NVC/KCC appointment online before you can reschedule it. Rescheduling is only possible on a date after your assigned appointment.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai must follow certain security procedures. To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview in an unsealed plastic bag or folder. Mobile phones and most purses/bags are not permitted. We do not provide a facility for storage of any other items.

Accompanying persons

Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview. The following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

  • Special Needs Visitors: Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child (under age 18).

Immigrant visa fees

If you have not paid all required fees to either the National Visa Center or via the appointment website, please be prepared to pay these fees on the day of your interview.

Fees may be paid by submitting a rupee bank draft drawn on a national or foreign bank. The bank draft must be issued in the name of “U.S. Consulate General Mumbai” and be payable in Mumbai. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded. A complete list of fees can be found via  travel.state.gov .

Do not make travel plans outside of India

If your visa is approved, the consulate will keep your passport while we print the visa.

Receiving your passport:

  • If you choose to receive your passport through Premium Delivery, you will receive an SMS and email when your passport is dispatched.
  • If you choose to retrieve your passport from a pick-up location, you will receive an SMS and email when your passport is ready to be collected. You must bring an original government-issued photo ID and a photocopy of the ID to collect your visa at the pick-up location you selected online at ustraveldocs.com  (see Step 1 ).

After Your Visa Interview

A consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because they need to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents or take certain actions. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the consulate.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will print your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors.

  • In some cases, we will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time. Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Unless they are eligible for benefits under the Child Status Protection Act, children who are issued a visa before turning 21 years of age must enter the United States before their 21st birthday to avoid losing their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. If you plan to travel outside the U.S. before your green card arrives: Please consult USCIS’s and CBP’s websites for rules about what documents you need to re-enter the country. We also recommend you check with the airline to ensure you are in compliance with their rules. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – In the United States, children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school. We recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. If your child is adopted, you have full custody because of a divorce, or you share custody with another parent, you should bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custody papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will need these papers (translated into English) for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.

Information for New Immigrants – Please visit the USCIS web page for helpful information on moving to the United States. You can read their publication “Welcome to the United States: A Guide for New Immigrants” online.

Diversity Visa Applicants - Additional Information

If you are interviewing for a Diversity Visa (DV), all the above instructions apply to you. Please schedule and attend a medical examination prior to your visa interview; enroll in the required courier service; and gather the required documents.

Below are additional instructions that apply only to DV applicants.

Bring to your interview

In addition to the documents listed on the Pre-Interview Checklist in this package, DV applicants should also bring the following items to your visa interview:

  • Appointment information printed from the “Entrant Status Check” on the E-DV website.
  • Documents showing that you have either a qualifying high school education OR two (2) years of qualifying work experience in the five (5) years immediately prior to application (for the principal applicant only; more information is available via  travel.state.gov ).
  • Payment in cash of the $330 Diversity Visa Application Fee for each visa applicant.

Review your DV Lottery entry

Prior to your visa interview, we recommend that you review the data on your initial E-DV entry. On your initial E-DV application, you must have correctly entered your marital status. If you are legally married you must have listed your spouse, even if you are currently separated from him/her (unless your spouse is a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident).

Additionally, you must have listed ALL of your living children who are unmarried and under 21 years old. This includes your natural children, your spouse’s children, or children you have formally adopted in accordance with the laws of your country.

Failure to have listed an existing spouse or children at the time of your entry in the Diversity Visa lottery will result in the denial of your visa and visas for your family. Any fees paid to the U.S. government in support of your visa application(s) are nonrefundable. If you failed to include a child who had already been born, or a spouse to whom you were married when you entered the lottery, you should not proceed with the visa application. You can review the eligibility requirements online .
