Carnival Cruise Line has released a schedule of Cruise Directors from 2024 to 2025, which specifies the name of the cruise director assigned at a particular time. This schedule is accessible to the public, and Carnival ensures it is frequently updated to reflect changes.

Carnival Reveals Directors for 3 Ships & Mardi Gras Sub

Carnival Cruise Line has announced who the cruise directors will be on three more ships that are re-entering service this summer, and named a temporary cruise director for  Mardi Gras .

Here are the scheduled cruise directors for Carnival Magic, Carnival Sunrise, and Carnival Panorama:

• Gary Blair — Carnival Magic out of Port Canaveral, Florida
• Felipe Couto — Carnival Sunrise out of Miami, Florida
• Lee Mason — Carnival Panorama out of Long Beach, California

The announced cruise director for Carnival’s largest and newest ship,  Mardi Gras , is Mike Pack. But given that he and his wife, former cruise director Emma Nixon, have a newborn baby, Pack is taking some time off to enjoy his little family’s new addition.

In his place, Chris Williams “The Flying Scotsman” will be serving as interim cruise director for  Mardi Gras’  first series of voyages, with Pack joining the vessel at a later date.

“We are back – and the fun is back – bigger and better than ever, and who better to lead the charge in that fun than our wonderful cruise directors,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line.

“As we continue to expand our guest operations and welcome guests back on board, it is so special and exciting to also bring our cruise directors back and to finally give our guests the amazing vacation experiences they know and love.”

Carnival Cruise Line resumed passenger operations this month when  Carnival Vista  sailed from Galveston on July 3 and  Carnival Horizon  sailed from PortMiami on July 4.

Cruises on  Carnival Breeze  are set to begin on July 15 and Alaska cruises aboard  Carnival Miracle  are scheduled to begin on July 27.

On July 31,  Mardi Gras  is set to make her debut voyage from Port Canaveral.

The 2011-built Carnival Magic cruise ship is one the biggest and Carnival's second DREAM-class liner, together with Breeze , Dream as well as Costa Diadema . Carnival Magic was last refurbished in February 2021.

The vessel (IMO number 9378486) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 370491000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

The 3690-passenger ship Carnival Magic was built in 2011 for USD 740 million. Magic features facilities similarly designed on the previous generations of line's ships while presenting some new features. This extraordinary ship marks the end of Carnival's longtime interior architect Joe Farcus, and he goes out in style. While cruisers might still expect neon and mirrored surfaces, his touch is limited, as far as other designers were also hired. This is the reason why there is a lighting refinement to many of the places, including the main dining rooms, the sun deck and especially Serenity adults-only area.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Magic staterooms (1845 total) include 54 Suites, 877 Balcony, 227 Oceanview and 713 Iside cabins, in all 34 grades. Most staterooms are sized 170-185 ft2 / 16-17 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 35-45 ft2 / 3-4 m2. Deluxe Oceanviews are with two separate washrooms and advertised as "Family cabins" having max capacity 5 passengers. Cove Balcony (located beneath the lifeboats on Deck 2) have partially enclosed verandas.

CCL Magic ship also has 368 connecting ("Family" cabins), 79 "Cloud 9 Spa", 35 wheelchair-accessible, and "Cove Balcony" cabins (located on Deck 2/by the lifeboats). The largest are the Grand Suites (345 ft2 / 32 m2 plus 85 ft2 / 8 m2 terrace) with max occupancy 4 passengers. Deluxe Oceanviews have max capacity 5 passengers.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The two formal dining rooms on Carnival Magic are the Southern Lights and the smaller Northern Lights. Both restaurants are the focal point of dining onboard the ship. For those who like laughter with their food, is the Punchliner Comedy Brunch, taking place in the Spotlight Lounge only on sea days. The real foodies who are curious about how the galley feeds so many people, have to check out Chef's Table. For US$75 per person, you'll be able to meet the head chef and tour the galley, as well as dine on a multi-course meal at a private table, while watching the chefs at work.

Lots of what is found onboard Carnival Magic came from first-in-class Carnival Dream, like the Seaside Theatre, 2-deck Cloud 9 spa and WaterWorks aqua park (Magic has two waterslides - corkscrew and bowl slide, Dream's got one). But Magic is not just a refined version of Dream. The liner has ushered in a handful of new features, such as Cucina del Capitano Italian restaurant which boasts singing waiters and handmade pasta for a $10 fee; Cherry on Top candy store and industry's first water "dump bucket", that complements ship's waterslides.

Prior to the COVID crisis, Carnival Magic was homeported in Galveston TX for 7-day roundtrips to the Bahamas, Eastern, and Western Caribbean. Feature port destinations included Key West Florida, Jamaica, Nassau , Belize , Mexico (Progreso, Cozumel, Costa Maya), Roatan, Grand Cayman.

Carnival Magic itinerary program in 2022 was based on homeporting in Port Canaveral-Orlando (Florida) . In 2023, the liner was homeported in Miami Florida and also offered voyages from Norfolk Virginia . Summer 2023 season from Norfolk VA was CCL's longest (6 months/May 14th thru October 22nd) since 2002. Carnival Magic's previously scheduled homeporting in NYC (to Bermuda) was canceled in Nov 2022.

Ex-Norfolk itineraries (roundtrip departures from Nauticus Half Moone Cruise Center) visit ports in The Bahamas (6-night to Bimini Island, Nassau, Freeport), Eastern Caribbean (8-night to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove Dominicana), Bermuda (6-night to King’s Wharf), Canada and New England (8-night to Portland ME, St John NB, Halifax NS, Sydney NS). Voyages to the Caribbean include 4 sea days (2 southbound plus 2 northbound).

Carnival Magic Wiki

The boat's Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was done in 2015. The Carnival ship Magic is the second of the company's Dream-class vessels ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with sisterships Breeze and Dream , and also Costa Diadema . The boat was christened by Lindsey Wilkerson (worker at the NYC -based ALSAC - fundraising organization for St Jude Children's Research Hospital).

Due to scheduled drydock refurbishment projects , in September 2020 CCL canceled all planned for 2020 and 2021-Q1 itineraries for 4 ships.

• Carnival Magic itineraries (15 total) from Miami Florida were canceled from November 7, 2020, through March 13, 2021 (1st departure).
• Carnival Paradise itineraries from Tampa Florida were canceled from November 2, 2020, through March 19, 2021 (1st departure).
• Carnival Valor itineraries from NOLA New Orleans   were canceled from November 2, 2020, through April 29, 2021 (1st departure), including two Transatlantic crossings - from NOLA (January 25) and from Barcelona (February 26).
• Carnival Spirit itineraries from Brisbane Australia   were canceled from December 6, 2020, through May 16, 2021 (1st departure is on June 12 / repositioning cruise from Singapore to Brisbane).

Carnival Magic drydock 2021

In 2021 (April 24 - May 24) Carnival Magic was drydocked at Chantier Naval de Marseille (CNdM Shipyard in Marseille France ), mainly for general maintenance works.

Curiously, Magic became Carnival's first liner to change the old hull design (white, with a red line running the entire length) with the new trademarked livery (red-white-blue) introduced on Mardi Gras.

During drydock 2021, the ship's Casino was expanded (with a greater variety of slots and other games), also were refreshed the WaterWorks aquapark and Lido Deck's swimming pools.

Carnival Magic refurbishment 2016 review

The list of deckplan changes after the ship's 2016 drydock refurbishment (February 21 to March 5) includes:

(On Promenade deck 5) was added the Alchemy Bar (cocktail pharmacy with resident mixologists). Also here, the Lanai Oceanside Barbeque was replaced by the new fast-food bar named “Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse”. The bar is complimentary and via a partnership with Guy Fieri (running also the “Guy’s Burger Joint” on Lido deck). Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse is an open-air restaurant for a variety of BBQ favorites. The menu features pork butt, blue ribbon chicken, sliced smoked beef, Guy Fieri's traditional sides, and gourmet burgers, a variety of BBQ sauces, hot sauce bar. Signature menu items are named Mac Daddy Mac'n Cheese, Old Skool Potato Salad, Scratch-Made Slaw, Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey, Molasses Baked Beans with Bacon and Burnt Ends.

(On Lido deck 10) were added 2 new poolside eateries (both complimentary) – Guy’s Burger Joint (fast-food bar) and Bluelguana Cantina (Mexican eatery). Other new venues on Lido deck are BlueIguana Tequila Bar (Mexican-themed outdoor bar for frozens and beers) and the Pizzeria del Capitano (complimentary).

(On Lido deck 10) were added RedFrog Rum Bar (rum bar for frozens and beers, plus the Carnival’s private label ThirstyFrog Red (draught beer).

Among the various technical enhancements implemented were shoreside power capabilities and new hull coating.

In 2021-Q1 (February-March-April) Carnival Magic was drydocked at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport Bahamas , mainly for general maintenance works.

Carnival cruise line announces cruise directors for next round of ships returning to service this summer.

Ships Include Carnival Magic from Port Canaveral, Carnival Sunrise from Miami and Carnival Panorama from Long Beach

MIAMI, July 13, 2021 – As part of its ramp up of returning more ships to service this summer, Carnival Cruise Line announced today the lineup of cruise directors who will entertain guests on the next round of ships entering service in August from Port Canaveral, Miami and Long Beach, marking the start-up of its West Coast operations.

At the helm of the excitement on board will be Gary Blair on Carnival Magic from Port Canaveral, Felipe Couto on Carnival Sunrise from Miami and Lee Mason on Carnival Panorama from Long Beach.

“We are back – and the fun is back – bigger and better than ever, and who better to lead the charge in that fun than our wonderful cruise directors,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line. “As we continue to expand our guest operations and welcome guests back on board, it is so special and exciting to also bring our cruise directors back and to finally give our guests the amazing vacation experiences they know and love.”

Giving Mike Pack and his wife, former Carnival cruise director Emma Nixon, time to enjoy their newborn baby, Chris Williams will serve as  Mardi Gras’  cruise director for its first series of voyages.

The line returned to guest operations in early July with Carnival Vista from the Port of Galveston and Carnival Horizon from PortMiami. Sailings on Carnival Breeze begin Thursday and Carnival Miracle later this month, followed by the debut of Carnival’s newest and most innovative ship,  Mardi Gras , on July 31.

With eight of its ships already in guest operations, and more restarting throughout the fall season, Carnival Cruise Line today announced its next round of cruise directors who will entertain guests across the fleet.

At the helm of the excitement on board will be Leon Smith on Carnival Glory and Marty Pitts on Carnival Valor from New Orleans; Frankie Portera on Carnival Pride and Leigh Xuereb on Carnival Legend from Baltimore; Deon Williams on Carnival Dream from Galveston; TJ Partida on Carnival Freedom from Miami; and Paully Munhollon on Carnival Elation from Port Canaveral sailing in September, October and November.

“As we continue to successfully restart our guest operations with additional ships on the way, we are also bringing back the fun in many ways, and our wonderful cruise directors who define the fun on board are leading the charge,” said Chris Nelson, vice president of entertainment for Carnival Cruise Line. “It’s been such a special experience seeing our ships get Back to Fun, and we’re just getting started!”

One of the most common questions I receive and see asked on cruise boards and social media sites is: Who will my cruise director be? To which there are always several follow up questions asked by new cruisers to the effect of: What the heck is a cruise director? Well I’m here to answer both of those questions! First…

What does a Cruise Director do?

Besides not sleep, smile through exhaustion and frustration, and dish out almost as many corny jokes as yours truly? Quite a lot! In fact, cruise directors are the most visible crew members onboard a cruise ship and often work up to 16 hours per day with no days off during their contract period (usually lasting around 4 months, but up to 9 months in some cases). While passengers will see them constantly out and about introducing shows, MC’ing activities and events, and interacting with guests, they are also responsible for behind-the-scenes scheduling and coordination of all entertainment and activities and certain safety protocols.

Many regular Carnival cruisers have a favorite cruise director they look forward to sailing with. So, let’s get to our second question, who will the cruise director be on my Carnival cruise?

Who will the Cruise Director be on my upcoming Carnival Cruise?

Important notes: * There is usually a week of overlap in the contracts of a current cruise director and their replacement. So, if you’re booked on the last sailing of a certain cruise director, you may actually see more of their replacement who is gearing up to take over. I’ve noted the exact “sign-off” and “sign-on” dates during August and September for each cruise director where there is overlap. ** While I try my best to keep this up-to-date, schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so I can’t guarantee this will always be 100% accurate. Carnival is excited to announce the appointment of Paulie Munhollon through March 19, 2022, as its Carnival Elation cruise director. Mulholland has more than years of experience in the cruise industry and has held several positions, including captain and ship director.

Mulholland is known for his sense of humor and infectious excitement. He is responsible for the overall management and safety of the passengers on the cruise ship.

Carnival Freedom

Carnival Freedom is the cruise ship that will have TJ Partida as its Carnival Cruise Director. James Love will be captain of Carnival Freedom from April 17, 2022, until January 15. The ship has a night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas and back.

Carnival Glory

Carnival is hosting a new Cruise Director this season! Leon Smith will be directing Carnival Glory from January 23. Cam Chavis will be directing Carnival Glory from March 27, 2022. Carnival Horizon

Erin Weigand, the Carnival Horizon cruise director, will be leaving the ship on April 24. Chris “Donkey” Salazar will be taking her place through September 11, 2022.

Carnival Legend

Carnival Cruise Director Leigh Xuerex has announced her departure from the cruise line on April 17, 2022. Ms. Xuerex has been with Carnival Cruise Line for years, and during that time, she has led the company through some major changes.

Ms. Xuerex has been a driving force behind some of Carnival Cruise Line’s most popular features, including the Dream Suite and the Carnival Magic. Ms. Xuerex has been a part of the Carnival Cruise Line family and all will feel her departure.

Carnival Liberty

Dustin Gabriel is the Carnival Liberty cruise director from July until his replacement is announced. Dustin Gabriel is a Cruise Director with Carnival Cruise Line and has over years of experience in the industry.

Dustin Gabriel is responsible for ensuring that every passenger has a wonderful cruise experience. Dustin Gabriel is a talented performer and is known for his energetic and engaging demeanor.

Carnival Magic:

Carnival Magic will make its first stop at the Port of Tampa on May 30, 2022. The cruise will depart from Miami in July and will arrive in Nassau in July. The cruise will then make its way to the Port of Galveston in July and will depart in July.

The cruise will then head to the Port of New Orleans in July and will depart in July. The cruise will finally make its way to the Port of Tampa in August and will depart in August.

Carnival Mardi Gras

Carnival Cruise Director Mike Pack will be through January 22. Kyndall Fire will be the Carnival Mardi Gras Director through April 12. Chris “Donkey” Salazar will be the Carnival Mardi Gras Director through October 8.

The Carnival Cruise Director’s schedule changes every year, so make sure to check it. There are a lot of fun events happening during Carnival Mardi Gras, so do not miss out!

Carnival Miracle

Savannah Mitchell is the Director of the Carnival Miracle ship. She has been with Carnival Cruise Lines for over years and has directed ships in the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Hawaii. Georgia Craig is the Director of the Carnival Miracle ship.

Carnival Panorama

Carnival Cruise Director Lee Mason will be through January 8 while Christian de la Rosa will be through July 7, 2022. These dates may change, so be sure to check the Carnival Panorama website for the most up-to-date information.

The schedule will include different activities and shows for each director. Make sure to get tickets early to avoid disappointment. 

Carnival Pride

Carnival has announced the schedule for their Pride cruise. The cruise will depart from Miami on March 20 and will arrive in the Caribbean in April. The itinerary will include stops in Cozumel, Mexico, and Costa Maya, Mexico.

The cruise will end in Nassau, Bahamas, on November 12, 2022. The cruise director for the Pride cruise is Frankie Portera.

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance will have its next cruise director through April 15. Christian “Deon” Williams will be the cruise director for Carnival Radiance through May 23rd. Ryan Rose will be the cruise director for Carnival Radiance through November 21, 2022.

Carnival Cruise Director Welcomes Magic

John Heald had never been on a cruise ship when he replied to a want ad seeking a bartender aboard the Carnival Destiny ocean liner.

“Much to my parent’s horror, I got the job,” Heald recalls with a laugh. “I gave up my job in London and I’ve been on cruise ships ever since.”

That was back in 1986. Since then, Heald has quickly risen through the ranks. In 1989 he was promoted to social host.  In 1990, he traveled to Helsinki, Finland, to help launch Carnival’s first 70,000-ton ship, the Carnival Fantasy.

Noting his easy rapport with guests, Carnival leaders made Heald a cruise director. In March 2004, he was named to the new position of Senior Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Lines.

This week, Heald has been aboard Carnival’s newest ship, the Magic, to help on her inaugural U.S. cruise from Galveston to the Caribbean. “When I first started out, never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine a ship like this,” he said.

Nor did he imagine how his job as cruise director would change over the years.

“It was oh so simple back then,” he said. “You would wake up, do an announcement promoting the gift shop, casino, tours and spa and then bugger back off to bed before a spot of lunch and some sort of show in the afternoon.”

“I was supposed to get the audience excited to see the band and they were already excited,” he said.

Before Maroon 5 took the stage, Heald also introduced a young man named Justin from small town Trenton, Tennessee. Justin had won a Carnivals Facebook contest for his unusual dance moves which he was going to share with the audience. Seeing that the nervous Justin was a bit shocked to be standing before such a huge crowed, Heald joked that the two of them – Justin tall and skinny and Heald a bit shorter and more rotund – looked like the number 10 standing side by side.

Heald also pens Carnival’s popular blog and shares his daily adventures at facebook.com/John Heald. “I started the blog three years ago and now I write four or five blogs a week,” he said. “On Facebook, I probably get 100 questions a day. People have a connection with Carnival and they want to know what’s going on. It takes a lot of time to blog and do Facebook.”

Technology changes also have affected the ships, guests and crewmembers, Heald says. “There have been so many changes,” he said. “The changes in technology are huge.”

When he first began cruising, Heald said there would be 10 to 15 bags of mail from the crew unloaded at home ports. Crewmembers were writing home to family and friends.

Instead, crewmembers use cell phones, the Internet and Skype to keep in touch with those far away. Guests also bring laptop computers or use ones in the FunHub to communicate with home.

When he first sailed the seas, Heald says he got a bit queasy in the stomach but never seasick. Unlike many guests who are lullabyed to sleep by the gentle rocking of the ship, Heald said he prefers his bed to stay still when he slumbers.

After seven weeks at sea, Heald is heading to his Great Britain home at the end of this Carnival Magic trip to spend some time with his wife Heidi and two -year-old daughter Kye.
