  • Be sure to secure the appropriate visa before travelling to Australia. Use the Visa Finder to explore your options.
  • Ensure all details are correct and provide all required documents when you apply. An incomplete or incorrect application can delay your visa.
  • Submitting multiple applications at the same time can slow the process. For visitor visas, submit one application per person, including children.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Working Holiday Visas

Australia's Working Holiday Maker program allows visitors aged under 30 (or 35 in certain cases) who hold a passport from a participating country to travel and work in Australia. Working holiday visas are valid for one year, or up to three years if you meet certain conditions.

Australia Visitor Visa: Requirements, Eligibility and Application Process

Updated: February 7, 2024

Australia Visitor Visa is the only option to visit Australia as a tourist for many nationalities. If you don’t qualify for either the Electronic Travel Authority(ETA) or the eVisitor Visa, then you will need to get a Visitor Visa.

Australia no longer accepts paper applications for the visitor visa. All applications must be lodged online through the Australian Government Immi Portal.

The Visitor Visa has subclass 600 in Australia’s visa documentation and the subtype we’re interested in is the “Tourist stream (apply outside Australia)”.

Quick summary:

  • Eligibility: All nationalities are eligible
  • Validity: Valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years with single or multiple entries
  • Duration of stay: Generally, 3 months allowed stay, but up to 6 or 12 in some cases
  • Visa fee: Visitors visa fee is 190 AUD
  • Processing time: 50% of applications are processed in 7 days and 90% in 21 days.

If you haven’t already, read the  Australia Visa Guide  to familiarize yourself with Australian tourist visa types, requirements, eligibility and entry procedures at the border.

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, Tourist Stream) Sample

Visitor visa validity

The Australian Visitor visa is valid for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years from the date of issue. The validity of the visa depends on your nationality and circumstances. You must visit Australia within the validity of your visa.

Duration of stay

Most Visitor visas granted allow for 3 months of continuous stay in Australia. Depending on circumstances, you might be granted a stay of 6 months or even 12 months.

Allowed number of entries

Most Visitor visas are multiple-entry , but Home Affairs also issues single visas in certain circumstances for certain nationalities.

When to apply

Since the tourist visas are valid for at least 3 months, it’s a good idea to apply well in advance. Most applications get processed in 3 weeks or fewer.

Visa extension

Australia Visitor visa is non-extendable . If you need to  extend your stay in Australia , you are allowed to apply for another Visitor Visa (onshore) from within the country.

How to check the validity of your Visitor Visa

  • Choose from visa durations of three, six, or twelve months with straightforward conditions.
  • It can serve as a short-term extension if your current visa, like a student visa, is expiring.
  • For visa application inquiries, contact us today!

If you are still looking for further details around the subclass 600 visa, read on below.

The step by step process to apply for visa 600

Whether you are in Australia or located in another country, the process is the same.

  • Go to the official Australian ImmiAccount page and set up a log in.
  • Fill out all the required information and provide all the documents asked for.
  • Submit the application and pay the required fees. If you do not provide all the information required, your visa may be denied or the processing time may be greatly increased.

Visa 600 fees

You can check the fees here.

Visa processing time

This visa has one of the fastest turnaround times. Talk to one of our expert agents today to find out how quickly this can be processed depending on your personal circumstances.

Eligibility criteria and visa conditions

The list of criteria are short, compared to other visa types. You must:

  • intend to complete a period of study no longer than three months long
  • have adequate health insurance
  • have enough money to support your stay

Documents required for visa 600

The Australian immigration authority can request different documents according to the country of origin and the intention of the visitor once in Australia. You may be required to supply:

  • a completed application form
  • copies of biographical page of passport
  • a recent passport-sized photograph with your name written on the back
  • details of any name changes
  • copy of birth certificate
  • proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Australia, such as a bank statement
  • proof there is incentive to return to your home country, such as enrolment at school, employment proof, or proof of ownership of assets in your home country
  • evidence of enrolment at the learning institution
  • evidence of a return flight ticket

How can people transfer from visitor visa 600 to student visa?

Transferring from a visitor visa to a student visa while you are in Australia can be complex pathway. It can only be done if your visitor visa doesn’t have any ‘no further stay’ conditions. Moving from a visitor visa to student visa also increases your chances of your visa application being refused, due to the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement. The immigration department may claim that the reasons for your education visa are not genuine, and this could be a reason they may decline your student visa application.

For either of these scenarios, you will need to return to your home country and apply for a student visa from there.

If you have condition 8503 applied to your tourist visa conditions, you can apply to have this waived. This condition states that the visa holder will not be entitled to a substantive visa while they remain in Australia. You must satisfy the department that your circumstances have changed, the circumstances were beyond your control, and be compelling.

Alongside the usual student visa requirements, you will be required to prove to the Australian immigration department:

  • that your reasons for not studying in your home country are valid
  • that you have sufficient reasons to return to your home country once your student visa has expired
  • there is no unrest in your home country that could stop you from returning home freely
  • there is nothing in your immigration history that indicates your intention to remain in Australia
  • the course is valid, relevant, and appropriate to your current education or employment

Visitor Tourist visa 600 Australia

This article will help you understand different types of Visitor visas including basic legal requirements, policy and procedures that apply to the Subclass 600 (Visitor) visa to Australia.

There are three visitor visa subclasses available for applicants intending to visit Australia.

  • the Subclass 600 visa,
  • Subclass 601 (Electronic Travel Authority) visa (the Subclass 601 visa),
  • Subclass 651 (eVisitor) visa.

This article focusses on the Subclass 600 visa only.

The objectives of the Subclass 600 visa are to:

  • facilitate the entry of genuine tourists, business and family visitors;

Subclass 600 Visa Streams

The Subclass 600 visa is comprised of five distinct streams:

  • the Tourist stream;
  • the Sponsored Family stream;
  • the Business Visitor stream;
  • the Approved Destination Status (ADS) stream; and
  • the Frequent Traveller stream.

It is important to understand and apply the relevant law as set out in the  Migration Act 1958  (the Act) and the  Migration Regulations 1994  (the Regulations) to be successful. Many of the requirements in the Act are expressed in objective terms and do not allow any discretion for officers in decision making. To the extent that the Act and Regulations allow for discretion, the Department must consider its approved policy and procedures where relevant however, policy and procedures do not have the force of law.

Applicants are required to identify and apply for the stream of the Subclass 600 visa that is appropriate for the purpose of their visit to Australia. The Subclass 600 application is taken only to be an application for the stream the applicant has identified and will only be assessed against the criteria for the stream the applicant has applied for.

Schedule 1 visa application validity requirements as per MIGRATION REGULATIONS 1994

Item 1236 of Schedule 1 outlines the requirements for making a valid Subclass 600 visa application. Each applicant must make a visa application in their own right.

Table 1: Summary of Schedule 1 requirements for each stream

Regulation 2.12M provides a priority consideration service on request (priority service or ‘fast track’) for applications for a Subclass 600 visa in the Tourist stream or Business Visitor stream lodged by certain passport holders specified in a legislative instrument made under subregulation 2.12M(7), refer to  Migration (Priority consideration for certain visitor (Class FA) visa Applications) Instrument (LIN 21/074) 2021 . The priority service may be requested by a Subclass 600 visa applicant for a fee that is in addition to the VAC.

Foreign government representatives

Foreign government representatives   seeking to travel to Australia on a short term basis may apply for a   Subclass 600 visa in the Business Visitor stream with a nil VAC.

Applicants accompanying guests of Government

A guest of Government, as defined in regulation 1.03 of Part 1 of the Regulations, means an official guest of the Australian government, or a member of the immediate family of the official guest who is accompanying the official guest.

Emergency situations and special events

In limited emergency situations and special events, a legislative instrument will be issued by the Minister under subparagraph 1236(2)(a)(iv) to allow for a nil VAC for eligible applicants.

Schedule 2 Visa Criteria

Subdivision 600.21 provides the common criteria that must be satisfied by all Subclass 600 visa applicants.  In summary, these criteria relate to:

  • public interest criteria (PIC) (refer to clause 600.213);
  • special return criteria (SRC) (refer to clause 600.214); and
  • the total period of stay must not exceed 12 consecutive months unless exceptional circumstances exist for the grant of the visa (refer to clause 600.215).

Genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia – clause 600.211

Clause 600.211 requires that an applicant genuinely intends to stay temporarily in Australia for the purpose for which the Subclass 600 visa is granted. To determine whether an applicant has a genuine intention to stay temporarily in Australia, a decision maker must consider number of things, which we will discuss and assess in a consultation.

The purpose of clause 600.211 is to protect the integrity of the visitor program by ensuring that decision makers identify, manage and monitor the level of risk of an applicant.

The best way to get an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Step-by-Step Instructions

How to Get an Australian visitor Visa

Visa application, processing, and getting are quite hustling for many people. But without a visa, you can hardly cross the border of other countries. And if you’re planning to visit Australia, then you can’t skip the visa processing.

Though Australia is pretty strict about visas, it doesn’t mean it is very hard to get an Australian visitor visa . Even I would say the Australian visa processing is much easier than any other country as the whole process takes place online.

So, you can apply from your home. All you need is a phone or computer and a strong internet connection.

If you’re a first-time traveller and you intend to visit Australia as a genuine visitor, you should apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) . Also, if your Australian ETA (601) been refused and asked to apply Subclass 600 instead subclass 601 the follow this article.

Here in this article, I will give you a step-by-step guideline of how to apply for a visitor visa and some DOs and DON’Ts that you should follow if you don’t want your visa to be denied.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Understanding Australia visitor visa Subclass 600

What is australian visitor visa (subclass 600).

Australian visitor Visa

An Australian visitor visa (Subclass 600) is a short time visit visa that will allow you to enter Australia for less than three months. This visa allows you to enter and stay in Australia for an allotted amount of time, with you being responsible for abiding by the rules and regulations associated with it.

Visitor visa (Subclass 600) has nearly six streams, but the two main streams are the Tourist stream and the Business stream . The visa validation, cost, and time processing depend on these streams.

Tourist Stream

Travellers looking to visit Australia should apply for a tourist stream visa. This visa is typically used by visitors who are going to Australia for leisure, medical treatment, visiting family or friends, and even completing short-term study or training activities lasting less than 3 months.

Business Stream

The Business Visitor Stream visa is for those travelling to Australia for business-related activities, such as attending a conference, training or seminars. Non-work-related activities such as networking and making sales enquiries are also allowed. It is important to note that this visa does not allow recipients to provide their services in the country while they are here.

Requirements for Australian visitor visa

Here I have listed some required and recommended information and documents that you may need to apply for the Australian visitor visa.

1. Online application form

Applying for a visa to enter, travel and stay in Australia just got simpler. Those looking to apply now can go online to complete the entire process, making it that much faster and more convenient! So, you can apply for your visa at your home without any hustle.

You have to fill up a 19-page application form that you will get after creating an ImmiAccount on the official immigration website of the Australian government. Get more details about the application form in the “how to apply for an Australian visitor visa (subclass 600) online” below.

2. A Valid Passport

When applying for an Australian visa, it is necessary to provide a valid passport as part of the application documentation. This is essential for the Australian government to consider and process visa requests. You have to scan your passport and then attach the file with the application form. The scanned copy should be clear and transparent. Otherwise, your visa can be rejected.

3. Recent passport size photos

As you have to provide all information through an online process, you must submit a soft copy of every document, including your photo and passport. You must attach a coloured passport-size photo to the required section of your application form. The photo must be clear and vivid.

4. National identity cards (if Have)

National identity cards are not mandatory for all applicants. But if you have, you must submit it. And if you’re under 18 and you don’t have your national identity card, then you can provide your birth certificate or other documents as evidence of your identity.

5. Proof of financial status

Proof of financial status is crucial for an Australian visitor visa, proving that you have enough funds in your bank account to support your stay and leave in Australia. To prove your financial status and you have enough funds, you need the following documents:

Your bank statement of at least three months period (if you’re carrying your trip expense).  Tax Return Your pay slips. Term deposits Audited accounts Credit card statement (if have)

Note: If someone is sponsoring your Australia trip, you may have to apply for a Sponsored family stream visa. Usually, your family member can sponsor your trip under this visa who has Australian citizenship or permanent resident, and your sponsor might be asked to pay a security bond.

6. travel itineries

A travel itinerary is a very important information that you must attach to your application form. In this travel itinerary, you have to include your day-to-day plans like places to visit and things to do during your vacation. And also mention the date, time, and your accommodation. Here is a sample copy of the travel itinerary . You only can submit a pdf copy of your travel itinerary.

Note: Travel itinerary is mandatory ONLY for those you are applying for the Tourist stream .

7. A cover letter

A cover letter is surely optional, but it can help you to get the visa smoothly. Because the whole process of applying and getting the Austria visitor visa would be online, there is no interview where you can explain your travel plans and purpose.

So, it is better to submit a cover letter that will explain your travel reason and travel plans. But of course, your cover letter must support every information that you have already submitted for the visa application.

8. Travel health insurance

Travel health insurance is also optional, like the cover letter, but it helps a lot to get the visa, and at the same time, the insurance is helpful during your stay in Australia. For example, if you have a medical emergency during your stay or your flight has been cancelled, you will get immediate financial support from the insurance company. So, travel insurance is required for your own sake and the visa authority also gets assurance that you can carry any medical emergency if needed.

9. Proof of employment status

With your visa application, you also need to submit evidence of your employment status.

For employee

  • NOC or Non-Objection Certificate
  • A letter that explains your role in the company
  • Income tax document

For Self-Employed or business owners

  • Business licence
  • A finance sheet that explains profits and losses

For Students

  • Students need to show their enrolment certificate of the particular school or university.
  • A non-objection letter from the specific school or university.

10. Application Fees

If you’re applying from outside Australia, then the tourist stream will cost you AUD 190.00 . And the cost is also the same for a business stream visa. You can pay the visa fee through your credit card, debit card, UnionPay, PayPal, and BPAY.

11. Additional Information

A Flight itinerary that will show Australia entering and exiting dates. And without buying an actual flight ticket, you can reserve your roundtrip flight which is also refundable in case your visa gets rejected.

An invitation letter from your family or friends if you’re staying with them in Australia. The letter should state your relationship with them, the reason for your trip, and so on.

Provide evidence of your previous travel (if you have). It may help you to get the visa smoothly.

A marriage license (if have) or a divorce certificate (if have).

Any property paper or house paper that you own in your home country.

Note: If any of this information is not in English, you’re highly recommended to translate them into English and then submit them.

Important Notes:

You don’t have to submit all the documents as some are required, and some are recommended. But it is better to submit as many as possible, which will increase the possibility of getting the visa. And remember your passport and photo are mandatory that you can’t skip. As you know, all your files have to be submitted through an online process. So, you have to make them either a jpg, PNG, BMP, or PDF file to submit. And no zip files or encrypted pdf files are acceptable. Don’t make your file size more than 5MB, as larger size files are not acceptable. If you have files that are bigger than 5MB, make sure you reduce the size and then upload them.

How to Apply for an Australian Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) Online?

Obtaining a visa to visit Australia is straightforward if you have the right information and documents. A simple guide can help make the process simpler and stress-free. Here I have explained how to apply for an Australian visitor visa in four easy steps. Also, you can watch my video in above.

1. Create an ImmiAccount

Creating an ImmiAccount is the most simple and crucial part of an Australian visitor visa application. Without having the ImmiAccount, you can’t get the application form, and you have to create it from immi.gov.au , which is the official immigration website of the Australian government.

Here you will get two steps to create the account. You need to fill up your family name, phone number, and, most importantly, an active email address at the first step. In comparison, the second step requires setting a password and some questions about you. Click here to create your ImmiAccount .

2. Fill up the application form

After registering for the ImmiAccount, you will receive an email to get access to the account. Now you just have to do the following steps.

First, log in to your account and click the “ New application ” option.  Then you have to choose the visa type. If you’re a genuine tourist, select the “ visitor ” option and then “ visitor visa (600) “. Now you have a 19-page application form which you must fill up carefully and correctly. Don’t give any wrong information that may cause your visa denial.

In these three simple steps, you can accomplish your visitor visa application form. And in case you cannot fill up your application form right then, you can always save it and edit it later. Moreover, you don’t have to print the form. Just fill-up the form and submit it. But be sure you have given all the correct information before submitting it.

3. Attach relevant documents

At this point, you have to submit all the required and recommended documents that we have mentioned before. On your application dashboard, you will have an option where you can upload all your files. Make sure you submit as many files as possible and make them less than 5MB before submitting them.

Now it’s time to submit your application form and then receive an Application Receipt via email.

Note: Remember, after submitting your application form, you cannot edit it anymore. So do double check before submitting.

4. Pay the visa fees

Now the last step is payment. The tourist stream visa fee is AUD 190.00 , and you also need to pay it online through a Credit card, debit card, UnionPay, or PayPal.

5. Make an Appointment for Biometrics

After submitting the application, create an account with VFS Global for biometric enrollment. You should have already received an email from Home Affairs regarding this, which includes an attachment stating the requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics) for the purposes of Section 40 of the Migration Act 1958 in relation to your Visitor (Tourist) (subclass 600) visa application. Please use your application number to schedule an appointment with VFS.

What is the Processing Time?

No one can predict the visa processing time as it is based on circumstances and the age of application finalisation. My visa processing time took nearly two years because I applied in February 2020 before the COVID-19 outbreak and the border was closed. I have received my visa confirmation email in March 2022.

But don’t be scared! Now the border has reopened for all visitors, and the processing time may take a few weeks. So don’t be so hopeless, just wait patiently as I did.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is Australia issuing visitor visa now?

Australia does issue visitor visas, and I have personally traveled to the country using one.

How do I get a tourist visa for Australia?

Follow the step above or to apply for an Australian tourist visa, you will need to complete an online application form, provide supporting documents such as your passport and proof of funds, and pay the application fees.

How long can I stay in Australia on visitor visa?

The length of stay for a visitor visa in Australia can vary depending on the type of visa and individual circumstances. Generally, a visitor visa allows for stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months. It is important to check the specific details of your visa to determine your maximum length of stay.

How much is a 3-month tourist visa to Australia?

The cost of a 3-month tourist visa to Australia varies depending on the applicant’s country of origin. For example, the fee for a US citizen is AUD $140, while the fee for a citizen of India is AUD $145. It’s important to note that additional fees may apply, such as health assessments or biometrics.

What is the visa validity time?

The visa validation depends on your travel itinerary and your nationality. Australian family visitor visa is generally granted for a period of 12 months. But normally, the Australian border agency will decide entry validity. In most cases it will be 3 months per entry.

Do I need to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation?

It is not compulsory to submit a flight itinerary and proof of accommodation. But if you can manage a roundtrip flight ticket and book a staycation with a refund policy, it is better to submit these documents as they increase the chance of your visa approval. My suggestion is must do submit proof of accommodations including flight reservation.

How early should I apply for an Australian visitor visa?

It also depends on your travel itinerary, but you should apply at least six months before your planned trip. Since there is a huge backlog, submit your application as early as possible.

How much bank balance do I need for the approval of my visa?

It is hard to say any exact number that you need to have in your bank account. Because it depends on many factors like how many days you’re intended to stay in Australia, your accommodation cost, your daily cost, etc. Make sure you have enough funds in your bank account so that you can maintain your stay and leave. With my personal experience, Australia is a very expensive place for many including myself. If you have pre-booked (paid) accommodations and purchased flight tickets, then i think at least A$ 200 per day.

What can be the possible reasons for an application denial?

Your visa can be denied, refused or rejected for many different reasons. But the most primary and possible reasons are the following: If you submit wrong information or unclear information. If you fail to prove that you have no intension to overstay in Australia. If your travel purpose is ambiguous. If you fail to prove that you or your sponsor has enough funds to support your trip. Weak travel history Not enough funds Fake or misleading information Not telling truth about previous visa application refused from other countries, namely from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

i applied for a tourist visa in April 2023, but they refused. The status is

The applicant claims to be employed with xxxxx Electrical as Site engineer. Documents provided in support of the application include travel details, employment, financial and income documents along with inviter’s documents. In assessing these criteria, I have taken into account the information provided by the applicant in their visa application form and the supporting documents. I find that the information provided is not sufficient to satisfy me of their genuine temporary stay intention, and the applicant has not demonstrated that they have sufficiently strong commitments in India that would be an incentive for them to return to India

now can i re apply for visa

You can re-apply but I think better to get professional guidance. There should be more evidence to return to India.

I have applied my Visitor Visa Subclass 600 on Dec 25th 2022 and still the application status is stuck at ”Further Assessment”. I have provided all requested documents = total is 23 docs uploaded to the immi account.

Any idea when I will be able to get the Visa grant letter for my application.

Appreciate your help

@Rahul Jonathan The timing for when you will receive your Australian visa grant letter, or any other related documents is dependent on many factors such as demographics and recent trends in applications. While the processing time may vary, it is advisable to wait for at least the designated processing period before reaching out to the authorities regarding an inquiry on your visa status. Best of luck!

My Wife and I is in the midst of processing the ETA to go to Australia. We have been rejected once before so I wonder if it’s still advisable to pursue the same path or go with subclass 600? though the first time we did not have our flights booked.

FYI our intention is so that my wife could attend her exam on 16 December 2022 at Brisbane, additionally, we’ll be visiting our relatives in the same city as well. from your article, you mentioned that an invitation letter from our relatives might further strengthen our application. May I please have a copy or a sample of such letter?

I am sorry to hear that you have been rejected once before. While it is not impossible for you and your wife to be approved again, it is still a challenge.

In your case, I would advise you to pursue ETA visa rather than a subclass 600. This is because the ETA visa does not require an invitation letter from your relative in Australia. However, if you choose the subclass 600 route, then I would suggest that you contact our office so that we can write an invitation letter for you and attach it to your application when we lodge it on your behalf.

What should I put in section where it asked for other travel documents? Will this include my expired passport and used/existing visas from other countries?

Do you have any other passports? Or you are a dual citizen? If not a dual citizen please include all your last 5 years travel histories. If you are Malaysian just use their ETA apps.

Hi, I am in South Australia on a student visa. My wife sister is a citizen here and she applied visitor visa for my wife on 9th June, 2022, but its still not approved. Could you please let me know why this visa is taking so long? Will my student visa affect their visitor visa?

Some nationality get longer waiting time then others. You are already there legally on a student visa so I don’t think your wife application will have anything with your current student visa.

Hello, I have submitted my visitors visa application last June 19,2022 and the status is for further assessment. What does it mean? How woud I know if there’s incorrect upload of the required attachment, do they email me about it? I am just confused because under actions of my immi account it says Attached documents and health assessment. when I click on health assement it says no further examination required. on attached documemts it says further assessment. This is my second application. my first application was in 2019 and took only 10 days to receive the grant notification. Im considering the delay might due to backlogs. Appreciate your feedback

Hello there, health assement not required for tourists. The Department of Home Affairs will make further assessment on your visa application. You will be informed of this in writing by the Department and be given the opportunity to provide additional information or documents as part of this process. I am agree with you that delay might be the reason of huge backlogs. And regarding incorrect uploads, The answer is, you don’t need to upload any more documents as they are already there unless you received any email for additional documents. Please do Re-check all your uploaded documents one more time. Thank you and wish you good luck on your visa application

Updated March 20, 2024

Requirements For Applying an Australian Visitor Visa 600

Here is what you need to prepare before applying for an Australian Visitor Visa 600 in 2024

Do you want to visit Australia with an Australian Visitor Visa 600 ?

Australia has endless sights to see, amazing experiences to have and not to mention an amazing culinary and wine scene. Maybe you have some business activities to attend to while visiting Australia? Do you have family here you wish to come to see? All of these require a type of tourist visa to enter Australia.

Would you like some help preparing for your visitor visa application?

Why don’t we go over all the different streams and subclasses for the visitor visa in Australia?

7 Biggest Visa Application Mistakes You Must Avoid

Australian Visitor Visa (subclass 600)

You can visit Australia on this type of visa for:

  • A visit or for business visitor purposes;
  • Up to three, six, or twelve months.

Currently, the base charge for the visitor visa 600 for applicants outside Australia/offshore is AUD $190 for all streams (excluding Frequent traveler streams), and AUD $1,395 for frequent traveler streams. For applicants in Australia/onshore, the base charge is AUD $475 for tourist streams only.

eVisitor (subclass 651)

If you are currently the holder of a specific passport (from a country listed in the eVisitor article), you may be able to apply for a free or cheaper visa. This is the eVisitor (subclass 651) visa and is free of charge for holders of certain passports (from a country listed in the correct article).

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visa (subclass 601)

If your country is not listed for the free eVisitor visa (subclass 651), your country may be on the list for the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visa (subclass 601) . The service charge for the ETA is AUD $20.

Brief details of the overall requirements for an Australia visitor visa

You may be granted this visa, if you are traveling to Australia, for the purpose of:

  • Activities involved with a business;
  • To visit with family;
  • To tour with a registered travel agent from the People’s Republic of China.

If you are currently in Australia, you may be able to apply for the tourist stream of the visitor visa online, as long as you currently hold a valid visa that does not have the condition of 8503 (“no further stay”) .

If you are currently in Australia, only certain passport holders can apply for this visa online.

If you cannot apply online, you can always lodge a paper application at your nearest Australian Immigration Office.

There are four different streams for Visitor Visa Australia (subclass 600):

  • Tourist stream;
  • Business stream;
  • Family-Sponsored Stream;
  • Organized tour from China.

I recommend applying for this visa up to two weeks ahead of when you want to travel to Australia if you are from a low-risk country. If not, you should apply at least a month in advance to allow for Immigration to assess your case fully.

Document Checklist for Australian Visitor Visa subclass 600 application

Australian visitor visa application requirements are different from country to country. If you are currently overseas, your nearest Immigration Office will tell you exactly how and where to lodge your application and what documents you will need to provide.

You need to provide documentation to back up your application for this visa. Immigration can and will make a decision using only the information you provided when you lodged your application.

It is in your best interest to provide them with as much information and evidence as possible when you apply. Please provide certified copies of your original documents.

You won’t need to include original documents unless Immigration specifically asks for the originals.

Except for police certificates, they should be the originals. If your documents are not in English, they must be followed by an accredited English translation.

There are three types of Visitor Visa documents that you need to provide, these are:

  • Identity documentation;
  • Character requirement;
  • Genuine visitor document.

Use the below checklist for the visitor visa (including all streams) to make sure your application is completely done.

1. Your identity documentation

  • Certified copies of the biographical pages of the current passports or travel documents of every person included in the visitor visa application (these are the pages with the passport holder’s photo, their personal details, the issue, and expiry dates).
  • One recent passport-sized photograph (45 mm x 35 mm) of every person included in the visa application.
  • These photographs need to be of the head and shoulders ONLY against a solid color background.
  • Please write the name of the person on the back of the passport-sized photograph.
  • If you have changed your name or anyone included in your application has changed their name: please provide a certified copy of the evidence of their name change.
  • Certified copies of birth certificates for you and any other person included in the application. The birth certificates need to show the names of both parents of every person.

2. Character requirements for the visitor visa 600

  • If you or others included in the application have served in the armed forces of any country: please provide certified copies of their military service record or discharge papers.

3. Documents needed to show you are a genuine visitor (GTE requirement)

  • Provide evidence of enough funds, such as personal bank statements, payslips, audited accounts, taxation records, or your credit card limit.
  • If you are visiting relatives or friends, a letter of invitation from your relative or friend in Australia. If your relative or friend is paying for your visit, evidence that they have the necessary funds.
  • If you are visiting under the Tourist stream: Your itinerary for your stay in Australia.
  • A letter from your employer stating your intention to return to your job,
  • Evidence of enrolment at a school, college, or university in your home country,
  • Evidence of immediate family members in your home country,
  • Evidence of your visa or residence status in your home country, and your right to return
  • Evidence of property or other significant assets owned in your home country.

Please be aware, per my observations of our cases throughout the years, higher-risk countries need to provide stronger evidence to prove you are going to return to your home country.

For example, provide evidence of a job to return to, or maybe all of your family lives in your home country, and show assets that you wouldn’t want to leave behind.

It can be more difficult to get this visa granted if you live in a higher-risk country but not impossible, let the experts help you get approved for your holiday or vacation.

A visitor Visa for Children younger than 18 years of age needs the below documentation

If you are younger than 18 years of age: please provide evidence that every person with a legal right to choose where you live consents to your travel to Australia for this visa. If one or both parents are not going to be coming with you, you will need to provide:

  • A statutory declaration giving your parent’s permission;
  • Form 1229 Consent form to grant an Australian visa to a child under the age of 18 years. If you use this form, you must attach a certified copy of your parent’s or guardian’s government-issued identification document (such as a passport or driver’s license) with a photo of them and both of their signatures;
  • If you are not yet 18 years of age and you will be staying with someone other than your parent, legal guardian, or relative in Australia: you must have a declaration signed by the person who will be caring and responsible for you while you are in Australia;
  • Form 1257 Undertaking declaration;
  • Provide evidence of enrolment at a school, college, or university.

Other things to consider when applying for the Australian tourist visa

Have you tried to apply for an Australian visitor visa and were refused? There are quite a few reasons for refusal, but the most common is the GTE requirement not being met.

This doesn’t mean you don’t have options to try to apply again, you can try right after your refusal if you want, just don’t try to submit the same information again, as you will be refused again.

I have found that if you are from a high-risk country , you need to have a really strong case in order to overcome the possibility of Immigration that you may just stay in Australia.

Since this is the case, I would strongly suggest help from a Senior Migration Agent, to help you understand how to make your case stronger, as they know what Immigration is looking for when they assess applications because of the number of them these agents have done.

What would make it easier for my australia visitor visa to be approved.

To approve your Visitor Visa, the Australian Department of Home Affairs evaluates carefully your financial situation. Therefore, you must have a regular income or financial incentives that will make you return to your home country at the end of your proposed stay.

Besides demonstrating financial or employment ties, the Australian government also evaluates if you have personal ties to your home country (such as studies, assets, or family), to prove that you'll depart Australia at the end of your authorized temporary stay.

Are there any COVID-19 entry restrictions or regulations for Australia?

What are th differences between the australia visitor visa (subclass 600) , eta (subclass 601), and evisitor visa (subclass 651).

The Australia eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651), Visitor Visa (Subclass 600), and the Australia ETA (Electronic Travel Authority, Subclass 601) are all travel documents that allow entry into Australia.

Still, they cater to different travel needs and have distinct characteristics:

eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651) : An eVisitor Visa is valid for up to 12 months, but it lets you spend up to 3 months at a time. An eVisitor Visa is not available for visitors from every country .

Visitor Visa Subclass 600 : This visa is for individuals who plan to visit Australia for tourism, business, or family visits. It allows stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months.

The Subclass 600 visa has more flexibility and is open to all nationalities who meet the eligibility criteria. It’s designed for those not eligible for the ETA or eVisitor Visa or travelers who want to stay longer in the country .

  • ETA (Subclass 601) : This is an electronic authorization for citizens of certain countries, including the United States, Canada, and many European nations.

It permits multiple entries, with each stay up to 3 months within 12 months. The ETA is typically used for tourism and short-term business trips. The process is quicker and more straightforward than the (e)Visitor Visa application.

Choosing between these two depends on your nationality, length, and purpose of stay.

Must I provide my biometrics for the Australia Visitor Visa application?

Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) will be requested for any applicant applying for a visa from a country included in the biometrics program. The list of countries is:

  • Philippines

Anthony Albanese

Hiking international student visa fees is on the table – but could it also pay your rent?

Paul Karp

While domestic students would benefit from boosted rent subsidies, increased international fees may scare away better students to competitor nations

  • Follow our Australia news live blog for latest updates
  • Get our morning and afternoon news emails , free app or daily news podcast

L ast week Anthony Albanese responded to concerns about whether international arrivals are adding to a tight housing market by noting the population is still lower than projected pre-Covid. That’s true, but won’t be for much longer.

In late February, Australia hit a record for both the number of international students (713,144) and of temporary entrants (2.8 million) in the country.

Even with measures to crack down on international student numbers enacted after the migration review was released in December , it takes a while for a reduced flow (international student visa grants were down 35% in February) to be reflected in a decreased stock.

The government has never ruled out more drastic measures, such as a cap on international students .

In February the Grattan Institute added another such idea to the mix: raise the international student visa application fees from $710 to $2,500, and use the proceeds to pay for an increase in commonwealth rent assistance.

Tertiary education sources say they understand the application fee hike is under active consideration.

Even those opposed to the idea see the logic: discouraging applications reduces numbers; if students are undeterred, it’s a revenue raiser for government.

The chief executive of the Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia, Troy Williams, said a fee hike “would be consistent with the Australian government’s clear policy intent to reduce the size of the international education sector”.

Abul Rizvi, the former deputy secretary of the immigration department, said increasing the non-refundable fee on foreigners to pay for Aussies’ rent is “very good politics” although he thinks it’s “poor long term policy”.

A spokesperson for the home affairs minister, Clare O’Neil, said “We’re considering all options as we work to restore integrity to international education.”

Governments hate to play the budget ruling-in ruling-out game, but they especially hate to do it with such a time-sensitive measure, which you would expect to be announced on budget night and backdated a day or two to prevent a flood of applications.

Hypothecating revenue – setting aside money raised for a specific purpose – is a bit of a fiction, as all government spending during times of surplus comes from the general revenue.

But increasing rent subsidies at the same time as international student fees has a logic to it. Double digit rent increases in capital cities are hurting households, and Labor is under attack on its right and left flank on housing costs.

Many stakeholders, from the Coalition opposition to sensible centrist economists like Chris Richardson , have linked the cost of housing to the temporary spike in arrivals, even if the housing shortage has many other, longer term and complex causes.

And universities, who would be expected to complain the loudest that good quality students from overseas could be discouraged from applying, would likely be less able to complain because of the larger domestic student constituency who benefit from rent subsidies.

Grattan’s chief executive, Brendan Coates, and deputy director of migration, Trent Wiltshire, think the fee increase would “discourage the growing number of international students who complete cheaper, low-value courses from coming to Australia”.

after newsletter promotion

The pair said the measure is “unlikely to discourage talented students from choosing to study at one of Australia’s top universities – those who we most want to stay permanently – because they already pay upwards of $150,000 for a bachelor degree”.

But others are down on the idea. Rizvi said given how high Australia’s rejection rate of international students is, paying a non-refundable $2,500 fee for no guarantee of a place is “a lot like entering a lottery”.

Rizvi thinks the measure has the potential to “scare away the better students” – those who have options and can study in competitor nations with lower fees.

Williams said the measure would “penalise overseas students wanting to take up study in Australia” and be a “job killer”, particularly in the vocational educational and training sector.

Iteca wants the government “to align its strategy” on international education and migration strategy.

“The former encourages international students to take-up study in Australia and the latter seems to say that these students should stay home, there is a real inconsistency here,” Williams said.

When the opposition arcs up in question time complaining about the population size, Labor likes to quote the shadow immigration minister, Dan Tehan, who welcomed the return of international students post Covid and Peter Dutton, who agreed after the September 2022 jobs and skills summit that “we do need an increase in the migration numbers”.

But there’s only so long an 18-month-old quote can keep the Coalition scare campaign at bay. The government will be judged on its record, and in this climate that means: did it succeed in cutting international student numbers and net migration fast enough?

Demanding more cash for international student visa applications is an incredibly blunt instrument, but for its potential to raise revenue, dampen demand and rebuff Dutton, it may prove irresistible for Labor.

Getting ready to apply for a visa?

Brazil again extends visa exemptions for US, Canada and Australia, this time until 2025

Brazil’s government has extended exemptions to tourist visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Australia and Canada until April 2025, extending a program aimed at boosting tourism that had been scheduled to end Wednesday

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil’s government extended exemptions to tourist visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Australia and Canada until April 2025, extending a program aimed at boosting tourism that had been scheduled to end Wednesday.

The decision, issued by Brazilian presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Relations late Tuesday, marks the third time Brazil has delayed the visa requirement since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023.

His predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, exempted the countries from visas as a means to boost tourism — although all three countries continued to demand visas from Brazilians.

That went against the South American country’s tradition of requiring visas from travelers based on the principle of reciprocity and equal treatment, and prompted Lula’s Foreign Ministry to say it would scrap the exemptions.

“Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption from visiting visas, without reciprocity, to other countries,” the ministry said at the time, while noting that the government stood ready to negotiate visa waiver agreements on a reciprocal basis. It did reach a deal with Japan to ease travel provisions.

The decision to maintain exemptions for the three countries is important for boosting tourism in Brazil, notably from the U.S., Brazil’s official tourism board Embratur said in a statement Tuesday.

Official data shows that nearly 670,000 Americans visited Brazil in 2023, making the U.S. the second largest country of origin after neighboring Argentina.

The government initially postponed the reinstatement of the visa requirement in October, then again in January. At the time, the government said it was still finalizing a new visa system and wanted to avoid implementing it close to the high season, mainly during the New Year’s celebrations and Carnival festivities in February, which attract tens of thousands of tourists.
