Stroll hand in hand along Cape May for breathtakingly romantic views.

Mountains, lakes and a scenic shoreline along the ocean – you could be talking about California, but all of these dreamy vistas are available to enjoy in New Jersey alongside someone you love. Many know the state for its Jersey Shore beaches , but you can also explore the countryside, the cities situated just a stone's throw from Manhattan and even a stretch of the Appalachian Mountains. The Garden State, as New Jersey is romantically nicknamed, contains multitudes – many of which make ideal intimate retreats for couples seeking a sanctuary outside of the usual routine.

Pairing the obvious with the unexpected, New Jersey boasts the casinos and resorts of Atlantic City as much as a bed-and-breakfast in a town with few residents but lots of lavender. Nature is in abundance, with verdant trails to discover – fingers intertwined. History-loving couples will be dazzled by restored castle-like mansions surrounded by lush gardens. There are inns and boutique hotels aplenty, but also more modern offerings in the multicultural Jersey City.

Despite being a small state, New Jersey is an inviting place for all couples. Read on to find the most romantic getaways in New Jersey.

Romantic Getaways in New Jersey

Asbury park, lambertville, jersey city, skylands manor, long beach island, atlantic city, long branch, pendry natirar.

Asbury Park at sunset, with the town reflecting in the water.

Love is music to the ears in the small coastal city of Asbury Park, known for a thriving live music scene that survives today at venues like the historic Stone Pony or New Orleans-inspired R Bar. Couples of all ages and orientations are welcome, and diversions can be found to satisfy any whim in Asbury Park and surrounding resort towns such as charming Ocean Grove. Spend a quiet beach day down the boardwalk, or make your way through an iconic retro arcade. You can always end the night cozied up with an elaborate cocktail under the romantic lighting of the speakeasy-style Laylow. Pascal & Sabine, meanwhile, serves rich French cuisine sure to make your mouth water – don't miss the milk chocolate pot de creme.

Where to stay: For lodging, Asbury Ocean Club Hotel towers over Ocean Avenue and offers couples a resort-style retreat. Also consider the tucked-away St. Laurent (formerly the Tides Hotel), a boutique and historic property that has served local LGBTQ communities for more than a decade.

The Cape May lighthouse in the evening light.

The seaside Victoriana of Cape May oozes romance, but this historic resort town – ideal for a weekend getaway from New York City – is far from sleepy. Cape May maintains a busy events schedule year-round that welcomes artists like trumpeter Wynton Marsalis to its annual Exit Zero Jazz Festival or the band Dire Straits Legacy to its oceanfront Convention Hall.

Book an idyllic farm-to-table dining experience at Beach Plum Farm and follow it up with a toast at Willow Creek Winery & Farm, whose Fire Pit Fridays feature live entertainment. You can also pass the time hiking to the Cape May Lighthouse, laying by the pool or watching the sun set at the beach. Cape May excels at date nights, from the moodily lit piano bar of The Ebbitt Room at the historic Virginia Hotel to the shops and treats along Washington Street Mall, where you can walk hand in hand – leaving one hand free for a Peace Pie gourmet ice cream sandwich.

Where to stay: There are accommodations aplenty in Cape May , but the Southern Mansion, originally built in 1860, is a lavish bed-and-breakfast surrounded by lush gardens – perfect for spoiling yourselves. Recent visitors say the small hotel's Victorian charm creates a warm atmosphere, though some advise you may not find modern amenities like elevators or minifridges. Meanwhile, enjoy beach and seasonal pool access alongside complimentary tours and activities with a stay at Congress Hall , considered the first seaside resort in the nation. Couples can start the day with delectable brunch at the on-site Blue Pig Tavern and end it soaking in one of the hotel's claw-foot tubs. And, of course, no visit to Cape May is complete without a nightcap at Congress Hall's iconic Brown Room.

House on the river at twilight in Princeton, New Jersey.

Come to Princeton – one of the best places to visit in New Jersey – when its ivy-draped schools are in session. This college town is romantic year-round, but you'll want to stick even closer to your significant other with a slight chill in the air. Autumn is the ideal time to paddle along the Delaware & Raritan Canal, gliding under the colorful fall foliage , after your stroll through the Princeton University campus at the heart of the city. Just 10 miles away in Hamilton sits Grounds for Sculpture, a wistful sculpture park with hundreds of installations set on more than 40 acres. In the spring, peacocks roam under the cherry blossoms. Make reservations at the on-site Rat's Restaurant, named for a children's book character, or preorder a picnic to enjoy on the grounds.

Where to stay: You'll find more mentions of peacocks back in Princeton at The Peacock Inn, a luxury boutique hotel with 16 rooms and a lovely afternoon tea service. If you want to be in the center of it all, you can't be more central than the Nassau Inn in the heart of Palmer Square. Host to the annual holiday tree lighting, this square is burgeoning with shops and artisanal ice cream; impressive eateries such as Mediterra Restaurant & Taverna, which offers a tapas menu for happy hour, also sit close. Check out Agricola Eatery for a top-notch meal – recent diners applaud the restaurant's use of fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farms.

You don't have to leave the Garden State to live the lake life. Vernon, a town in Sussex County, welcomes couples looking for a lakeside getaway to ski lodges like Mountain Creek. Open in all four seasons, this resort offers wintertime skiing and snow tubing, while summer ushers in a chance to splash by the pool or water park, as well as a zip line course for bird's-eye views.

If you don't want to share your space with families at the resort, consider a cozy cottage or cabin Airbnb rental in the Vernon Valley or along the Highland Lakes. You can also book a stay at the Crystal Springs Resort's Minerals Hotel , nestled in the alpine Appalachian Valley and outfitted with a sports club, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you're looking to bond with your significant other over a new shared experience, Crystal Springs Resort offers guests a range of activity options from ax throwing and painting to goat yoga and archery.

Challenge your partner to a hike on the Stairway to Heaven trail, which rewards some climbing with divine views over New Jersey. Or choose a more sedate stroll at the Pochuck Boardwalk, a section of the Appalachian Trail. Afterward, tame your appetite at The George Inn, a 19th-century establishment with an extensive menu and a tap room.

Aerial top view roofs of historic small town downtown Lambertville in New Jersey.

Antiquing aficionados will want to book a long weekend in Lambertville. Myriad purveyors of old and interesting items have set up shop in this small Hunterdon County town, alongside inviting coffee shops and quaint residential streets. Don't miss Owowcow Creamery, tucked on Union Street, with scoops made from scratch using local and seasonal ingredients. If you want to make a quick trip over the state line, New Hope, Pennsylvania, is just a half-mile across the pedestrian-friendly bridge over the Delaware River. One of the most romantic escapes in Pennsylvania , this small town – equally overflowing with vintage clothiers, eclectic shops and eateries – will complement your Lambertville getaway perfectly.

Where to stay: The Lambertville Station Restaurant and Inn is routinely referenced as a romantic destination, given the fine dining it offers on the Delaware River, complete with a wine cellar and herb garden. You can sample some cabernet and wind down at one of the 46 rooms here, which visiting couples say makes for a wonderful weekend getaway – or book a stay at one of the suites at the Bridge Street Guest House.

Aerial panorama of Jersey City skyline at night.

Start your romantic getaway in Jersey City with a spa day at the trendy SoJo Spa Club in Edgewater (about 10 miles north). This Korean-inspired spa is open in all weather for treatments; its facilities include a pool and therapeutic baths with stunning views of the New York City skyline. In good weather, book a cruise that grants access to Ellis Island and Liberty Island, where you'll find the Statue of Liberty. Once back on land, take a sunset stroll from the Harborside plaza to the Colgate Clock. Head to dinner in the waterfront Paulus Hook neighborhood, rife with intimate restaurants: The rustic-chic Satis Bistro, for example, will elevate your date night with modern European fare such as charcuterie.

For an even better nighttime view of the city lights, check out the rooftop bar and lounge at Hyatt House Jersey City – or the Vu Restaurant and Lounge at Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson , which affords a glimpse of Lady Liberty.

Where to stay: Many hotel chains have a presence in Jersey City, but Hyatt's river vistas are difficult to surpass. Vacationers staying at the Hyatt Regency praise its convenient location, with a PATH train into New York directly in front of the hotel, and the views that make some guests opt never to shut their curtains at night.

You don't have to choose between staying in a state park or a castle – and you don't have to leave New Jersey to do it. Skylands Manor was designed and built in the 1920s by American architect John Russell Pope, whose credits also include the National Archives and National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C . Though now a century old, the castle-style manor was intentionally built to look weathered and ancient, and all of the stone used was quarried on the estate. Today Skylands Manor sits on the grounds of the New Jersey State Botanical Garden in Ringwood, providing 100 acres of beauty you can explore on a self-guided tour.

A stay at The Castle at Skylands Manor hotel will make you and your loved one feel like royalty. Unsurprisingly, this site is a top wedding venue, able to host up to 600 guests in its formal gardens. The Castle at Skylands Manor offers 21 suites, but be sure to book a stay far in advance if you want to beat out lovebirds looking to tie the knot. Couples who have recently stayed here checked a castle stay off their list, but they caution that the property is privately maintained and occasionally experiences maintenance issues. Guests with mobility issues should know they will need to navigate stairs to stay at the manor.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

Golden sunrise over the beach in Beach Haven, New Jersey on Long Beach Island.

The drive out to Long Beach Island – more commonly called LBI – will bring the peace of mind that accompanies leaving behind the bustle of the mainland and crossing the Manahawkin Bay. The 18-mile stretch of barrier island offers seasonal amusements and bayfront hotels in six tiny shore towns with fitting names like Ship Bottom, Surf City and Beach Haven. LBI's white sand beaches aren't free – each municipality requires its own beach badge – but they are pristine.

You can easily spend your day sunbathing or cycling together to either of the wilderness areas that bookend the island. In the north you have the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, while at the southern tip you'll find part of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, with views of Atlantic City. Be sure to also check LBI's local schedule to see if any annual festivals (ranging from celebrations of wine to chowder) coincide with your visit.

While you're in LBI, The Chicken or the Egg merits a visit to Beach Haven for a Buffalo chicken omelet or other fowl-related fare.

Where to stay: Consider booking a dinner – or a stay – at The Gables. This property looks like a seaside cottage set amid a garden teeming with flowers. Candlelit three-course dining, five gorgeously appointed rooms and honeymoon packages make The Gables an epicenter of romance on the island.

Atlantic City Boardwalk at sunset.

Amid the casino lights you might associate with Atlantic City , you'll also find this city to be a waterfront escape near top-rated restaurants and attractions. Even if you have no interest in gambling, couples come to AC to enjoy celebrity-headlining comedy shows and concerts alongside dining that ranges from the kitchen of an Iron Chef (Angeline by Michael Symon) to a landmark restaurant first opened as a private club in 1912 (the Knife & Fork Inn).

Of course if you do fancy the slots, there are more casino options than you'll be able to sample in one visit. And, as an iconic boardwalk destination above all, Atlantic City claims one of the oldest and longest boardwalks in the world with nearly 4 miles of boards, the first section of which originally dates from 1870. After spending an afternoon on the free beaches of AC, go win your sweetie a stuffed animal at one of the arcades.

Where to stay: A hotel within a hotel, The Water Club at Borgata is a couple-friendly oasis with 43 stories, five heated pools and a two-story spa, all conveniently connected to the amenities of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa next door. Recent visitors rave that the property is clean and quiet despite being centrally located, though it does lack the ocean access typical of many other Atlantic City accommodation options.

Couple at an outdoor cafe in Frenchtown, New Jersey.

Offering a wooded refuge along the Delaware River, Frenchtown is a darling destination for couples looking to commune with nature and the arts. The Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park starts here, and walkers or cyclists can pedal along the river all the way to the state's capital in Trenton. The Lovin' Oven will serve you a satisfying brunch that can either give you the energy to hit the D&R trail or reward you for your journey; the towpath sits adjacent to the restaurant. Fans of the Lovin' Oven appreciate its funky atmosphere and flavorful food. Just down the road from the eatery is ArtYard, a contemporary art center and exhibition space.

To really soak up the flavor of Frenchtown, plan a visit around one of the town's unique festivals, such as the celebrations for Bastille Day (July 14) or the Riverfest street fair held in September.

Where to stay: The place to book in town is the historic National Hotel, originally a stagecoach stop and now a restaurant, hotel and tavern with frequent live entertainment.

Within Warren County's Knowlton Township – right on the border with Pennsylvania in North Jersey – you'll find the community of Columbia. Since its population is less than 200 people, you will be guaranteed privacy on a weekend getaway to the East Coast countryside.

Where to stay: At The RoseMary Inn, a bed-and-breakfast situated on 17 acres, the first meal of the day is considered an event, with a multicourse breakfast menu that uses fresh and local ingredients. Many recent guests agree that the inn – especially with its breakfast offerings – is a hidden gem. Sip your coffee on the porch overlooking the pond and plan a slow-paced day. Maybe you'll opt to visit the Orchard View Lavender Farm in Port Murray, about 20 miles south, whose weekend events may include dinner in the lavender fields or soothing evening yoga sessions.

Less than 10 miles from Columbia in the nearby town of Hope, The Inn at Millrace Pond is another well-reviewed lodging option. With 17 rooms – some pet-friendly and with whirlpool tubs – this fully remodeled inn was originally built as a stone gristmill in 1769.

Wellmont Plaza in Montclair at night.

Courtesy of Montclair Center BID

Situated about 20 miles from Manhattan is the eclectic New Jersey suburb of Montclair, which boasts plenty of things for couples to do. Browse the Montclair Art Museum, which has a focus on Native American and American art, then stop by the Van Vleck House & Gardens to enjoy a green oasis amid this urban suburb. Kip's Castle Park, a 9,000-square-foot mansion that resembles a Norman castle, features a scenic overlook and great bird-watching. Downtown Montclair is alive with shops and restaurants, which span cuisine from Brazil to Israel. If your sweetheart has a sweet tooth, Montclair is an excellent place to find French macarons, with a variety of bakeries peddling such fine confections among other baked goods.

Where to stay: Book a stay at the hip and modern MC Hotel, described as "part gallery, part gathering space," or splurge on a king-size suite at The George , a boutique hotel with individually designed rooms styled in part by celebrity creative director Bobbi Brown. Guests at The George revel in its ambiance, enjoying details such as the wine hour or fluffy robes – and the hotel is dog-friendly, in case your furry friend plans to tag along on your romantic escape.

Waves on the sand at Long Branch, New Jersey.

Back on the Jersey Shore, enjoy a table for two set along the Atlantic Ocean. Date night doesn't just hit one note in Long Branch, a Monmouth County beach destination that's been growing over the past decade. Pier Village is a shopping and dining mecca along the boardwalk, where you'll find eateries such as the oceanfront Sirena Ristorante or Avenue, both with crackling fireplaces and cocktail menus. Perhaps you'll opt for a glass of red wine paired with a delicious cut of meat at The Butcher's Block, or you can be served a plate of poutine and craft beer brewed on-site at The Whitechapel Projects. This gathering space brings together food, drinks, art and community with occasional live music and collaborations with local vendors.

Where to stay: Book a stay at Bungalow Hotel, a small art-focused boutique accommodation at the entrance to Pier Village with in-room fireplaces and a cocktail bar. Bungalow guests can use the amenities of its sister property, Wave Resort, an oceanfront hotel and spa that is another great lodging choice.

In the Somerset County borough of Peapack-Gladstone, an elegant estate welcomes you. Its name, Natirar, is an anagram for Raritan – this Tudor-style, Gilded Age mansion sits about 10 miles from the Raritan River. Natirar was formerly owned by King Hassan II of Morocco, though he only visited it a few times. In 2023, the 400-acre property and working farm joined the Pendry hotel chain to become the Pendry Natirar , a full-service resort with a spa, tennis courts, pool, horseback riding trails and more.

Visit Pendry Natirar for its lauded culinary odyssey called Ninety Acres, which includes farm-to-table fare and signature cocktails unlike anything you've had before. Diners say the experience begins when you head up the winding driveway, and that it might be pricey but it's worth the splurge. If you're looking to re-create this special dining experience after your romantic getaway, consider signing up for a culinary arts class for you and your better half at the Ninety Acres Cooking School.

To kick off our list of romantic getaways in New Jersey, we have Atlantis Inn !

This spot is tucked away in Ocean City and it’s an absolutely gargantuan Victorian mansion.

It’s over 120 years old (which adds to the historic charm!) but boasts every modern amenity you could ever ask for.

Like whirlpool tubs, spa showers, fireplaces, and private patios, obvs.

To make things even sweeter, this is one of the romantic getaways in New Jersey that’s just 13 minutes from the beach.

So, you can be out of your towel and snuggled into bed in record time!

Gamble in Atlantic City

1.  Gamble in Atlantic City

Okay—Atlantic City might not be the most beautiful city in the world, but some of the hotels there certainly are. Stay at the Borgata or Harrah's where you can indulge in some pampering services from world-renowned spas like Elizabeth Arden Red Door and Spa Toccare, dining from top chefs like Bobby Flay, and maybe even walk away with some cash after a few rounds at the roulette. The only reason you’ll have to step outside is if you want to walk along the historic boardwalk to evoke some romance from the good ol’ days.

Take a trip to the beach

2.  Take a trip to the beach

There are no Snookies or Situations in sight at some of these stunning beaches in New Jersey. Spend the night at one of the historic B&Bs of Cape May like The Queen Victoria or the candlelit Gables Inn on Long Beach Island. Both are perched near quieter beaches, feature luxurious accommodations, and are within walking distance to some of the area’s top attractions.

Go for a bike ride

3.  Go for a bike ride

You won’t have to dodge taxicabs and pedestrians during this relaxing bike ride. Head to Frenchtown where a beautiful rails-to-trails path awaits. Pick up a bike at Cycle Corner in town before hitting the trail that runs along the Delaware River. After a day of pedaling in nature, you can retire to The National Hotel or Widow McCrea B&B, which were both built in the 1800s. There's also an adorable shop in town called Two Buttons owned by Elizabeth Gilbert of “Eat, Pray, Love” fame with knick-knacks from all over the world.

Stay in a castle

4.  Stay in a castle

Castles aren’t just for Europe. There’s one right in the middle of Ringwood. Called Skyland’s Manor, the grand fifty-four-room granite Tudor Revival mansion is situated on one hundred acres of formal and naturalized gardens located in the New Jersey Botanical Gardens. Stay in one of the 24 newly restored guest rooms that boast views of the lush gardens and expansive grounds. You’ll truly feel like a king or queen for the night.

Watch a drive-in movie

5.  Watch a drive-in movie

Take the night to step back to a simpler time. You can cozy up to the one you love in the states last remaining drive-in theater Delsea Drive-In, located in Vineland. There you’ll get two movies for the price of one in a regular theater and the sound comes through your car speakers. You can also embrace the old school date night by order snack like floats and chocolate covered pretzels from the concessions menu.

Go wine tasting

6.  Go wine tasting

Eat a romantic meal

8.  Eat a romantic meal

It may not be a big state, but Jersey is packed full of top-notch restaurants that ooze romance. You’ll feel transported for the evening as you drive up the long road to Ninety Acres in Far Hills before indulging in a decadent meal. Also, Scarborough Fair in Sea Grit is all about privacy as each of the tables have their own dining alcove. Andrea’s Ristorante in Waldwick, Cafe Matisse in Rutherford, and Ivy Inn in Hasbrouck Heights are all great mood-setting options as well.

Visit an art gallery

9.  Visit an art gallery

Hit the spa

Let’s get started with some of the best weekend retreats on the East Coast featuring romantic getaways in NJ.

Table of Contents

Jersey Shore Romantic Getaways

Long beach island (ocean county).

Barnegat Lighthouse Lbi

LBI isn’t a secret to anyone — but this is one popular Jersey shore town that earns its reputation. It’s a barrier island that features six towns with lovely beaches, romantic accommodations and good food.

Start your LBI romantic getaway at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park . It’s a coastal NJ state park with unique features — check out the trail through one of NJ’s last maritime forest areas. The historic lighthouse “Old Barney” is a cute place to birdwatch, fish or picnic.

Travel south from Barnegat and visit one of NJ’s most beautiful miniature golf courses. Adventure Golf in Beach Haven isn’t your typical “putt-putt course” — its 2 courses feature beautiful landscaping, caves and waterfalls. You’ll play through caves and cross a swinging bridge while you play. It’s a golf course adults can certainly enjoy on a date.

After you enjoy LBI’s 18 miles of beaches and bay attractions, you need to relax. There’s plenty of B&B, hotel and house rental options available around the island. Windward at the Beach is a boutique hotel in Beach Haven with eclectic accommodations and features.

Just down the block from Windward is Williams Cottage Inn, a highly-rated bed and breakfast. This charming sea green B&B features eight guest rooms, and your stay includes a two-course gourmet breakfast.

A weekend stay in Cape May is less about “doing things” and more about enjoying the view. Widely considered one of the East Coast’s best shore points, Cape May blends historic charm, deluxe hotels and enjoyable beaches.

Many couples plan their trip around the town’s seasonal events. Visit the official Cape May event calendar for a list of upcoming events. There’s plenty of shopping near the beaches — take advantage of reasonable metered parking and see Washington Street Mall and the independent shops that surround it.

The Mason Cottage is a lovely place for couples to stay on a Cape May weekend retreat. This Victorian bed and breakfast blends vintage aesthetics with modern amenities. Book a romantic hotel suite and wake up to a two-course gourmet breakfast. Then, take advantage of the Mason Cottage’s inn concierge to plan your day.

Couples who crave a little culture with their Jersey Shore experience, take note. The adjacent towns of Ocean Grove and Asbury Park pack a combination of romance and unique date spots that are hard to find elsewhere.

Asbury Park’s revitalized downtown is a hub of great restaurants, shops and music venues. This isn’t your parents’ Asbury — gastropubs, coffee shops and upscale bars line the streets. There’s a series of great art galleries like Exhibit No. 9 and La Salle Gallery.

Music lovers take in great local shows at the legendary Stone Pony and the House of Independents. Both venues offer a combination of notable acts and up-and-coming artists.

The Asbury Ocean Club Hotel is a jaw-dropping Jersey Shore luxury hotel with a garden pool terrace, exquisite drawing room, and spacious lofts and suites.

If you desire a quieter stay, book your room in Ocean Grove. It’s a lovely escape from downtown Asbury Park, with charming houses and a lovely beach. The Ocean Plaza Hotel is popular among couples who want a cozy retreat.

  • Ocean Plaza Hotel : 18 Ocean Pathway, Ocean Grove, NJ

Spring Lake Bed & Breakfast Inns (Monmouth County)

Ocean House Spring Lake Nj

Spring Lake is one of NJ’s most picturesque towns. The streets are lined with small shops and quaint eateries, and couples can enjoy a stroll on the beach or around the fountain on Spring Lake itself.

But the true standout of this quiet shore town is the assortment of bed and breakfast inns.

Each of Spring Lake’s B&Bs offers different amenities and aesthetic features. The Ocean House sits one block from the beach and offers breakfast service, coffee bar, and a special early riser bakery.

The Chateau Inn and Suites offers 36 guest rooms and one-bedroom suites. Their Vienne lounge provides complimentary gourmet coffee and a variety of teas to guests. Couples can relax on the Johnson House’s wraparound porch just 1⁄2 block from the Spring Lake boardwalk.

  • The Ocean House , 102 Sussex Ave., Spring Lake, NJ

  • Crystal Springs Resort : 1 Wild Turkey Way, Hamburg, NJ

Lambertville Shop & Stay Weekend (Hunterdon County)

Lambertville Nj Canal

Lambertville sits across the Delaware River from its more famous “sister town”, New Hope. Lambertville has plenty of charm of its own — and it’s a great chance to visit two riverside towns for the price of one.

Start your romantic weekend with a short trip to the Howell Living History Farm in Hopewell. You’ll be transported back to the year 1900 and get a hands-on farm experience. You can help plant crops, shear sheep, or try your hand at maple sugaring!

Lambertville is a must-visit town for vintage and antique lovers. The “Antiques Capital of NJ” offers an assortment of intriguing shops. Check out The People’s Store , a collective of 40 dealers in a three-story building. The Golden Nugget Flea Market is open three days a week.

A quick walk over the Lambertville-New Hope Bridge reveals a ton of great shopping and culture in New Hope. Watch a show at Bucks County Playhouse, then browse the street-side shops for arts and crafts. The best restaurant in town may be Zoubi, which offers al fresco dining and an outdoor bar.

The Woolverton Inn in Stockton is an 8-minute drive from Lambertville. It’s an elegant country bed and breakfast with 14 unique cottages and guest rooms. It’s well worth the short drive out of town to stay at a bed & breakfast rated one of America’s 10 best.

  • Woolverton Inn : 6 Woolverton Rd, Stockton, NJ

Princeton University and Palmer Square (Mercer County)

Palmer Square Princeton Nj

Princeton is more than its historic university. The town itself is an idyllic blend of colonial architecture and modern shopping and dining. The best place to discover Princeton’s charm is Palmer Square.

Palmer Square sits opposite Princeton University’s main entrance off Nassau Street. Shop at trendy clothiers like Highbar Boutique, NIC + ZOE, and Ralph Lauren. Then stop at Art on Hulfish for a photography-focused look at today’s art scene.

Dining at every quality restaurant near Palmer Square would take weeks. Mediterra Restaurant and Taverna is a local favorite — the seafood options and wine menu are highlights. The Alchemist and Barrister (A&B) offers excellent American pub fare.

After your meal, choose from several outstanding Princeton dessert spots. The Bent Spoon serves hand-crafted artisan ice cream flavors like lavender mascarpone and lemon-NJ peach. Chez Alice Patisserie is an airy cafe that serves Parisian desserts — try the macarons, beignets and the decadent raspberry Napoleon.

The best way to enjoy Palmer Square is to stay at Nassau Inn . The Inn’s stone facade is a tribute to its history, and gives way to 188 chic guest rooms and suites. Step outside the Nassau Inn and directly onto Palmer Square for weekend activities.

  • Nassau Inn : 10 Palmer Square, Princeton, NJ

Jersey City Waterfront (Hudson County)

Hyatt Regency Jersey City Vu

Couples don’t have to “escape the city” to find romance. The Jersey City Waterfront offers plenty of exciting options for a weekend along the NJ side of the Hudson River.

Spend an afternoon at Liberty State Park for a taste of nature near the city. Museum-loving couples should stop by Liberty Science Center for its interactive exhibits and world-class Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium.

Jersey City’s vintage shopping scene is vastly underrated. Discover hidden JC gems like Kanibal & Co. and Another Man’s Treasure. There’s also a great array of coffee shops — try Gregorys Coffee on Exchange Place or Hidden Grounds on 1st Street.

If you’re visiting the Jersey City Waterfront, you must explore the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. NYC dwellers get a great new vantage point of their city, while NJ residents can taste city life along the water.

The Hyatt Regency Jersey City blends lovely views with excellent convenience. With rooms overlooking the Hudson River and a location close to the PATH train and NYC ferries, you’ll be quite happy with your choice of hotel.

  • Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson : 2 Exchange Place, Jersey City, NJ

Morristown Green & Historic Sites (Morris County)

Frelinghuysen Arboretum Morristown

Morristown is a historic Morris County town with a refurbished downtown. The Morristown Green is a vibrant hub for romantic restaurants, busy bars and arts centers.

The Fig & Lily Garden is a Morristown restaurant with a beautiful courtyard dining area. Their menu combines Eastern Mediterranean cuisine with locally sourced New Jersey ingredients. The Committed Pig is an award-winning restaurant with tremendous food and service — smart couples call ahead for reservations.

If you like a little history, check out the Morristown National Historic Park and Jockey Hollow. You’ll see original buildings where George Washington’s Continental Army stayed, as well as Washington’s Headquarters. Finish your sightseeing with a trip to the Morris Museum and enjoy their rotation of current exhibits and musical performances.

Morristown’s a quick car ride from great shopping and scenery in Short Hills. Couples can spend a beautiful afternoon at Frelinghuysen Arboretum, a gorgeous assortment of trees and gardens that’s free to visit.

The Madison Hotel is a fantastic choice for lodging that reflects modern Morristown. The updated amenities retain their historic charm, and its location on Convent Road places it near everywhere you want to explore.

  • The Madison Hotel : 1 Convent Rd, Morristown, NJ

Ramapo Valley Reservation and NJ Botanical Gardens (Bergen County)

Nj Botanical Gardens

The Ramapo Valley County Reservation encompasses 4,000 acres of forests, parks and camping areas. It offers kayak access to the Ramapo River, well-marked hiking trails, and catch-and-release fishing (with proper NJ license).

If you’re a couple that loves outdoor winter activities, cross-country skiing is popular during the winter months. There are several gorgeous ponds to relax near during warmer months. The Reservation is less than 30 minutes from the George Washington Bridge by car.

The nearby NJ Botanical Gardens in Ringwood is one of NJ’s most romantic destinations. Within 1,000 acres of woodlands lies 96 sprawling acres of garden space. There’s a beautiful garden for every taste — wildflowers, hostas and rhododendrons, perennials, annuals, and the stunning lilac garden. Walk through the statues and lily-adorned fountains of the Italianate gardens.

New Jersey is often looked upon as just the more budget-friendly neighborhood of NYC, but there is so much more to the Garden State than vibrant Newark. One of the best things about New Jersey is that you spend your Friday night in Manhattan and hope over the Hudson to spend your Sunday afternoon hiking a portion of the Appalachian Trail. You might even have time to spend Saturday morning on the beach!

The 2021 population of New Jersey was 9.267 million people, which is densely populated. In fact, according to Governing.com , five of the top 6 most densely populated cities in the United States are in New Jersey. The Most Romantic Getaways in NJ

1. cape may.

Cape May tops most of the lists for romantic getaways in NJ, and for good reason. The Victorian charm of this seaside village emanates romance and has been drawing lovers to the Jersey Shores for decades. With plenty of sightseeing options, Cape May offers something for every kind of couple.

Who Will Love It

Oenophiles will love Cape May for Willow Creek Winery. Obviously, beach lovers will find solace in this historic resort town, and live music lovers will get their fill with a visit to The Ebbit Room, the annual Jazz Festival, or a major concert at the convention center.

Cape May is a wonderful spot for relaxation. Pull up an oceanfront chair and enjoy a day watching the waves. Take a hike to Cape May Lighthouse for a stunning view, or take a whale-watching tour. Peruse the glorious Victorian architecture of the Historic District. Pop in its eateries and fine boutiques. For date night, get dressed up and enjoy the piano bar at the historic Virginia Hotel. Don’t forget to uncover the hidden history of Cape May on our “ Historic Highs and Downtown ” scavenger hunt!

Where to Stay

While there are many charming places to stay in Cape May, ranging from fairly affordable vacation rentals to Victorian bed and breakfasts to high-end hotels, one of the most romantic lodgings is Congress Hall . This lovely boutique hotel has been welcoming visitors since 1816 and claims to be “America’s First Seaside Resort.” It boasts well-appointed suites, a lovely outdoor pool area, a full-service spa, and three restaurants and lounges. It also features full-service amenities like pool-side or beach-side food and drink service.

2. Lambertville

Lambertville is a small town just across the Delaware River from New Hope, Pennsylvania. If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the densely packed cities, Lambertville offers one of the most charming romantic getaways in NJ and might be your perfect spot.

Antique lovers will find themselves in paradise in the little town of Lambertville, and so will foodies. Lambertville is full of fantastic coffee shops, fine dining options, and small-town cafes. Not to mention that is the antique capital of New Jersey with almost as many vintage stores as people.

Obviously, if you head for Lambertville, you are going to want to bring some spare cash for antique shopping. Lovers will enjoy the walk along the Delaware River to the pedestrian bridge crossing over into New Hope. The bridge offers spectacular views of the area, and New Hope has even more great antique shops. Lambertville Station Restaurant and Inn have a magical herb garden and wine cellar which makes for a romantic dinner option. Make sure to grab a scoop (or three) of local homemade ice cream at Owowcow Creamery!

There is no use in stressing yourself out looking for a spot in Lambertville, just tuck in upstairs after your dinner at one of the 46 guest rooms at Lambertville Station Restaurant and Inn . It’s part resort, part cabin, and has a quaint charm all its own. From the floor-to-ceiling windowed dining room to the classic guest rooms with river views, to wedding-venue quality grounds, The Stations provides everything you need for a romantic weekend.

3. Princeton

Yep! It’s that Princeton, like home to Ivy League Princeton University, Princeton. Like most major university towns, Princeton offers beautiful green spaces. Plus, it boasts plenty of recreational activities and an elegant ambiance.

If you and your boo like to swing a club then the pristine golf courses of Princeton are the optimal romantic getaway in New Jersey for you. It also draws in architecture lovers to ponder the craftsmanship of its Gothic university buildings. There is also plenty of nostalgia for history lovers and fantastic art museums for creatives.

Start your weekend with our “ Princeton Flourish ” scavenger hunt and learn some interesting trivia about the old girl. From there, take a walking tour of the city and feast your eyes on its incredible architecture. Take a paddle in the Raritan Canal. It’s especially beautiful when the fall foliage changes colors. Pop in the Princeton University Museum of Art to peruse 80,000 pieces of art and historic artifacts. Visit the atrium at 1756 Nassau Hall. Take a walk through Princeton Battlefield State Park. You could also opt to take a tour of Drumthwacket Foundation, the official home of the governor of New Jersey. If it’s cherry blossom season, make sure to drive the 10 miles out to Hamilton’s Grounds for Sculpture park and wander its 42 acres of whimsical art.

There are two popular boutique hotels for lovers in Princeton. The Peacock Inn draws attention for its 16 luxury rooms and a fashionable afternoon tea time, as well as an on-site fine dining restaurant. The hotel is located within a Colonial mansion dating back to the 1700s.

The other option is the Nassau Inn which is located on Palmer Square. This is a vibrant area at the heart of the action. Step outside your door to grab a gourmet treat from any of the artisanal ice cream shops or upscale eateries. The 3-star inn offers a mixture of accommodation options and offers a quaint charm. The original inn was opened in 1756 and hosted the likes of Paul Revere. You can still gather around the common room fireplace just as the Revolutionaries would have hundreds of years ago. Though the location has changed since then, the inn retains many historic elements and is an interesting stay.

4. Atlantic City

Welcome to “America’s Playground!” Atlantic City is a blast, boasting everything from hilarious comedy shows to glitzy casinos and one of the most famous boardwalks in the world. Whatever you and your boo do for fun, you can probably find it here!

Well, those who have an affinity for slot machines will certainly find their home in the casinos of Atlantic City. However, those with a fondness for nostalgia will also enjoy the arcades and traditional games along the boardwalk.

Start your weekend with our “ Roll the Dice in America’s Playground ” scavenger hunt. Impress your partner with your gaming expertise along Steel Pier. Stroll the 4 miles of boards on the boardwalk. Ride the Ferris Wheel. Dine in any one of the incredible seaside restaurants. Spend the evening testing your luck at the slots. Also, take a climb up one of the weirdest roadside attractions in the United States , the giant elephant, Lucy.

We step away from the romantic bungalow hotel for this one into the luxury, 43-story, Waterclub at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. If you and your love want to get pampered, this baby has two full floors of spa facility, multiple heated swimming pools, and urban loft suites that feature king beds, floor-to-ceiling windows, spa bathrooms with two-person soaking tubs, and much more!

For a little more inspiration, take a look at “ The Best Things to Do in Atlantic City, New Jersey. ”

5. Ocean Grove and Asbury Park

Like Atlantic City, Asbury Park is another lively boardwalk destination on the Atlantic Ocean, but it has a reputation for petty crime, especially at night. Within walking distance, is the small Methodist resort community of Ocean Grove which is its antithesis in pretty much every way. Asbury features all the great live entertainment you expect from the Jersey Shore, with nightlife staples like the Stone Pony, famous for helping launch the careers of Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. Ocean Grove is lined with Victorian mansions and a quiet place to spend the night.

If you love ocean views, fantastic food, and live music, then Asbury park is the ideal romantic getaway in NJ for you and your boo!

You could spend all weekend in the extravagant Silverball Retro Arcade challenging each other to vintage pinball tournaments. If there is a concert at Stone Pony, you must do that. Otherwise, spend your days waltzing the long boardwalk and enjoying the waves. Oh, and enjoy a nice dinner and a great beer from Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten, or splurge on French cuisine at Pascal & Sabine. These two little coastal towns also offer great proximity to more popular Jersey Shore beach towns like Longbranch to the north and Belmar just to the south.

While you could certainly pop a squat at the lovely Asbury Ocean Club Hotel for a resort stay, if you are looking for something more laid-back, check out St. Laurent Social Club . It offers 20 rooms with modern decor within a historic inn. The service model here is more like a typical vacation rental, where there is no on-site staff, and check-in and check-out are done through your phone. If you are an introvert that may sound like heaven to you, for the socialites, it probably sounds awful. To each his own.

If you want to stay in quiet Ocean Grove, there are many small guesthouses, but The Ocean Grove Plaza Hotel has been an award-winning accommodation for over a century. It boasts the TripAdvisor certificate of excellence for the last 11 years running. With three stories, featuring full wrap-around porches, the Victorian beauty offers panoramic ocean views, stellar breakfast, and slightly dated, but clean and comfortable guest rooms.

6. The Wildwoods

The Wildwoods are a collection of four towns, all with the name “wildwood” in them, that occupy an island just a few miles from Cape May. It’s a popular weekend resort area due to its stunning beaches, waterparks, and plethora of seaside restaurants.

If you have a soft spot for 1950s kitsch, then Wildwood is the best romantic getaway in NJ for you. The area is known for what locals call “Doo-Wop” architecture, and the whole place feels like taking a step back to a simpler time.

Explore the vintage boutiques for some excellent shopping. Take a sunset dinner cruise or a dolphin sightseeing tour. Spend the day with artisanal ice cream in hand, riding the rollercoasters or the Ferris wheel on the boardwalk. Visit the Doo Wop Experience Museum or peruse the giant farmer’s market. If you are feeling a little young at heart, then spend an afternoon at one of the waterparks.

While there are several kitschy resort hotels, like Starlux, located near Morey’s Pier, we wouldn’t say any of them are particularly romantic. However, there are some cute condos and stand-alone cottages on Airbnb that you could check.

7. Hammonton

Off the beaten path, Hammonton is officially known as the blueberry capital of the world. If you are looking for a romantic getaway in NJ that is free of crowds, then Hammonton is a good bet.

Oenophiles will love Hammonton. In the middle of New Jersey Wine Country, Hammonton features several lovely farms and vineyards that you can make a weekend out of.

Take a wine-tasting tour hopping from Dimatteo Vineyards to White Horse Winery, onto Plagido’s Winery, and then finally to Tomasello Winery & Banquet Hall. When you are sick of wine, pop in for a golden refresher at Three 3’s Brewing Company. Visit the historic Batsto Village which features wooden homes from the 1800s and the glorious Batsto Mansion. Take a hike through Wharton State Forest, or pick your own blueberries at Lindsay’s Farm.

While temporarily closed for rezoning, the most romantic spot to stay near Hammonton is The Farmhouse at White Horse Winery . Located among the vines, the charming white farmhouse offers six comfortable guest rooms, a fantastic complementary breakfast, and stunning views from the big front porch!

8. Frenchtown

Frenchtown is another spot to get away from the hustle in Western New Jersey, right on the Pennsylvania border.

Frenchtown is an idyllic romantic getaway for adventurous couples with kayaking in The Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park and a biking track that runs riverside all the way to the capital city of Trenton.

Visit the Downtown Historic District which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take in live music or a poetry reading at the ArtYard. Peruse the boutique shops and small art galleries for hidden gems, and check out the retro toy collection and gourmet eats at the Sunbeam General Store. If you are feeling adventurous, take a kayak tour on the canal, or rent a bike and ride the 35 miles to Trenton for the day. It’s a beautiful, forested bike path that skirts right along the Delaware River to the city. If you want to visit in July, Frenchtown has a truly French festival celebration Bastille Day annually on the 14th.

National Hotel has been hosting guests since 1850 when the recreational boom of the day was pleasure boating on the canal. It stands on the site of an older inn that was a stagecoach stop and brothel built in 1833. The current hotel features an open bar with karaoke, jazz, and open mic nights. It also boasts its own steakhouse and newly revamped guest rooms.

9. Long Beach Island

LBI is famed for its gorgeous swaths of white sand beaches! Unlike the busy boardwalk beachfront we have discussed thus far, Long Beach Island is much more laid back.

LBI is famous for its watersports. If you are a pair that loves paddleboarding or parasailing, then LBI is the perfect spot for you!

The white sand beaches of LBI are flanked by two wilderness areas, ripe for exploring. Check out Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in the north and work your way down the coastline to Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in the South. In between, there are six small coastal towns to choose from or hop between. The town of Beach Haven does have a small boardwalk if you want that atmosphere, but the further south you go on the island, the more commercialized and family-friendly it gets.

If you want to stay in the more luxe northern part of the island, then book a suite at The Sand Castle Bed & Breakfast. It boasts beachfront rooms with views of Barnegat Lighthouse, an outdoor jacuzzi and pool area, a large complimentary breakfast, and 6 charming guest rooms. There are also two luxe suites with whirlpool tubs, in-room fireplaces, and private balconies with ocean views.

10. Spring Lake

Spring Lake is an upscale beach town devoid of all amusement parks and casinos. It’s a pristine residential area boasting some seriously gorgeous seaside mansions.

If you and your loved one are looking for a luxurious getaway on the Jersey Shore, then Spring Lake offers perfectly coifed beaches and beautiful downtown.

Spring Lake is truly about relaxation. Rent an electric bike and cruise along the shore. Visit Seagirt Lighthouse for a quick tour, and enjoy the rest of your days on the stunning beaches.

Just up the road in Avon-by-the Sea, the Cashelmara Bed & Breakfast is one of the most romantic getaways in the area. The historic home boasts both ocean views and rooms that overlook Sylvan Lake. Pull up a rocking chair on the giant veranda for even more view-soaking. Aside from the views, the Victorian-era rooms feature antique furniture juxtaposed with modern amenities. Though each room does feature flat-screen TVs and Wifi, you won’t need them because Cashelmara has its very own Grand Victorian Cinema!

11. Ocean City

Ocean City is the quieter neighbor of Atlantic City. It doesn’t boast the nightlife options of its big brother, but it still has a lively waterfront and plenty of recreation options.

If you want the classic Jersey Shore vibe with a little quieter ambiance than Atlantic City, Ocean City is the best romantic getaway in NJ for you. It’s also the capital of White Marlin fishing, so if you and your partner enjoy deep-sea fishing, you will love this area.

Take a tour of Assateague Island to see the wild ponies. Spend your days on some of the most beautiful beaches in New Jersey. Take a sunset paddleboard tour with 48th Street Watersports, or set to the skies with your love on an evening parasailing tour! Bring your fishing pole, as Ocean City has several beautiful fishing piers.

A stay at Northwood Inn is always a pleasure. A gorgeous Victorian home, it boasts a billiards room, a large dining room, and seven guest rooms. You can enjoy stargazing from the rooftop deck year-round and it’s within walking distance of the beach and boardwalk. It has a gorgeous wrap-around porch and a continental breakfast.

12. Mays Landing

While not a popular tourist attraction, the small town of Mays Landing is a popular weekend getaway for locals looking to escape busyness. The little town has only 2,000 permanent residents which provides a welcoming environment to rest.

If you are looking for a peaceful getaway where you can sip wine in a beautiful vineyard or spend a weekend doing absolutely nothing, here it is!

Balic Winery has been in operation since the early 19th century and features a peaceful outdoor arbor for wine tasting. There are also several beautiful lakeside parks in the little town ideal for picnicking or stargazing together. If you are an animal lover, then spend a morning at Funny Farm Rescue and Sanctuary.

For a comfortable stay on the water, check in to The Inn at Sugar Hill . Abbott House Bed & Breakfast is also a lovely option. These are really the only two options for staying in the town itself, but they are both quite nice for a laid-back stay.

13. Red Bank

Red Bank has been voted one of the best towns in New Jersey, mostly because of its attention to art and theater.

If you and your significant other are culture vultures, then you will love “The Greenwich Village of the Garden State.” In Red Bank, you will find wonderful art galleries, theaters, and live music venues, as well as wonderful dining and shopping options.

If you visit during spring or summer, stroll along the boardwalk for excellent shopping and dining options. Enjoy a rousing stage performance at Two Rivers Theater, a small and intimate venue boasting high-quality shows. You can also catch a larger show at the Count Basie Center for the Arts which features live music acts, folk dancing exhibitions from all over the world, and comedy acts. You can also explore Downtown Red Bank on the adorable trolley and when evening comes around, turn up a pint of Guinness at the Dublin House.

Molly Pitcher Inn is the most romantic place to stay in Red Bank. The inn features a gigantic, indoor/outdoor waterfront dining room with live piano music. The rooms are spacious and feature a soothing color palette with private bathrooms and lush bedding. It also features a beautiful outdoor pool area.

Vernon is located in Sussex County, Northwest of New York City on the NY State border. The area is one of the more romantic getaways in NJ year-round!

If you love to hit the slopes together or live that lake life, then Vernon is the best spot for you!

If you visit in winter, spend your days on the slopes of Mountain Creek Ski Resort. If coming in the summer, hit up the zip line course. Enjoy watersports on the lake Take your partner on a hike on the Stairway of Heaven Trail which provides incredible views of Wawayanda State Park. You can also join part of the Appalachian Trail here at the Pochuck Valley boardwalk. For a relaxing spa day or a round of golf, stop in the Crystal Springs Resort’s Minerals Hotel. The resort also has a great sports club and fun activities like ax throwing and goat yoga. After a long day on the slopes or at the lake, soothe your muscles with a few brews from the tap room at the historic George Inn.

If you don’t say at one of the aforementioned resorts, your options are to rent a secluded cabin near Highland Lake or head a little farther north to the elegant 1831 Colonial Mansion now known as Fox & Bear Lodge. Just an hour from New York City and in the heart of the mountains, the lodge is outfitted with 8 guest rooms which have been restored to the highest quality. This 3-story home is a stunner with warm and welcoming owners. Each room has a private en-suite, and they serve a gourmet breakfast sourced from local farms. If you are looking for a special stay in New Jersey, Fox & Bear does not disappoint.

Or, if you want to travel to a campground in NJ , there are plenty of choices in the Garden State.

Have a DIY Spa day

Light the candles and turn your bathroom into a zen-like retreat. Whip up DIY treatments, like an exfoliating sugar scrub made with 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Or fill the tub and put on chill music to relax together without ever having to leave the house. Depasquale even has some take-home DIY options or try a customized virtual facial with Exhale .

Romantic Getaways in New Jersey: 8 Hideaways for Couples in the Garden State

A peaceful garden hidden from public view, tucked behind old chestnut trees and rolling lawns, the Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills offers a romantic respite from the bustle of everyday life – a secret getaway in plain view.

New Jersey is a lot like this hidden suburban treasure. Intimate and memorable escapes for couples are set in gorgeous surroundings, but largely slide under-the-radar in a state not always associated with romance. That’s about to change.

Below, you’ll find inspiration for weekend getaways for two, romantic treasures, and pampering stays where you can reconnect, unwind, and relax together throughout the state to make every day feel like a special couple’s holiday.

Gourmet dining and high design for two on the Jersey Shore

The year-round Jersey Shore destination of Long Branch doesn’t just offer up fun in the sunny summer months. Thanks to 30 sophisticated dining and shopping spots that comprise beachfront Pier Village, there’s a four-season draw for sand-loving duos here. One such draw? A winter wonderland of  Ice at the Pier  with an outdoor ice skating rink, festive cocktails and delectable holiday treats.

Year round,  Avenue  is a date night highlight, offering French flair and Parisian bistro favorites with an Atlantic Ocean view. The menu even offers several dishes created to be shared for two, including iced seafood towers filled with crustacean delights; a  cote de boeuf  dry aged, bone-in rib eye; and a  paella royale  topped with fresh-from-the-sea clams, mussels, and lobster. In the summer months, Avenue offers a romantic beach option with private cabanas where you can tuck away on luxurious loungers and order everything from champagne to cocktail bites to enjoy a deux.

Suites add lipstick red couches and fireplaces to the mix, perfect for a cozy, cold weather beach getaway. Stay in to experience Bungalounge, the hotel’s guest lounge and rotating art gallery with live music and craft cocktails.

The art-filled  The MC, Autograph Collection  is set right in the middle of the action and feels like an extension of the museum, featuring show-stopping canvases from local painters such as Siona Benjamin-Kruge and Ryan Chin, among others. The hotel is stocked with artisanal products made nearby, including beer from Montclair Brewery, fresh elixirs from Juice Basin, and handmade bath products from Montclair favorite Dolly Moo.

Brunch is especially memorable, with weekend delights cut as homemade blueberry acai bowls, rich brioche french toast, and a hold-no-stops smoked pork belly fried egg sandwich. Ascend to the ninth-floor rooftop where you can gaze at sweeping views of the sparkling Manhattan skyline to the east while cozied up around a fire pit sipping craft cocktails at Alto.

Beachside elegance made for two in south jersey.

Far from the wild Jersey Shore seaside antics you may have seen on television, the secluded beach town of Stone Harbor is the polar opposite on the same stretch of sand. Nestled on the posh Seven Mile Beach barrier island at the southern end of the state, it seems more like you’re on Martha’s Vineyard than the Jersey Shore.

Stroll down 96 th  Street and you’ll find fine art galleries, tasteful clothing boutiques, and upscale dining options. Try the lovely outdoor patio at  Jay’s on Third , where the bougainvillea draped dining area creates a secret garden dining experience. Nearby is Ocean Galleries, for works by both local and nationally known artists.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Stone Harbor

Just across the street is  The Reeds at Shelter Haven ,  an upscale waterfront retreat nestled on the bay. Rooms are reminiscent of an elegant beach home with white oak floors, a coastal sea palette, and expansive picture windows facing towards the town, over the ocean, or directly out at the calm bay. All have balconies, so you can sip your morning coffee while the sun comes up or share a toast while the sun sets into a cotton candy sky in front of you.

Spend some time together enjoying the two-story, luxury Salt Spa with couples’ massages, a Himalayan salt and light lounge, flotation therapy, or, most uniquely, a private session just for the two of you in the steam-filled marble Turkish bath.

After you’ve detoxed, retreat to the roof deck of the hotel’s Water Star Grille for a prime cocktail sun downer setting. Then head inside to cuddle by the fireplace at the Sax at the Reeds restaurant.

The Reeds At Shelter Haven

Step back in time at a victorian resort hideaway.

Walking through the cobblestone streets of Cape May feels like you’ve been transported back in time to a genteel age of exquisite homes. Painted Ladies (gloriously gem-hued Victorian houses) offer intricate wood work and wide porches perfect for people watching. The whole town is a National Historic Landmark, and the twisting lanes leading down to golden sand feel made for romance – especially if you explore the town in a horse-drawn carriage.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Cape May

To immerse yourself in turn-of-the-century elegance, spend the night at the circa 1860s  The Southern Mansion .  The luxurious B&B offers every comfort for couples, including fireplaces, four-poster beds, and claw-footed tubs in addition to opulently carved woodwork and lush fabrics.

The decadent breakfast menu is included in your stay, so the two of you can start your day with fluffy pancakes filled with Jersey fresh blueberries or poached eggs with a homemade sun-dried tomato sauce, gratis, plus fresh baked pastries, juice, and coffee.

You may need to head back to the comfy beds after that; better yet, go lay on the golden Cape May beach – the Mansion will give you chairs and towels.

Not a beach day? Southern Mansion even has its own  Willow Creek  winery nearby, with tastings, 50 acres of vines, and a villa tasting room for sipping varietals such as pinot noir, cabernet franc, and sauvignon blanc.

The Southern Mansion

A transporting romantic journey to a magical sculpture park.

The magical  Grounds for Sculpture  outdoor sculpture park in Hamilton is a fairytale setting for couples. The immersive art park, conceived by founder Seward Johnson, mixes whimsy into the tree-filled setting.

One highlight is a life-size version of George Seurat’s  Sunday in the Park  picnic painting lolling in the grass, complete with a wrought iron table tucked by a lake, a fully-imagined sculpted picnic and even a sail boat in direct sightline. There are more traditional sculptures here, too, along with plenty of spots to hold hands and steal kisses as you explore the creative nooks and crannies around the grounds.

Make a reservation for the oddly named  Rats Restaurant  (after the character in the children’s classic  The Wind in the Willows ). The entire dining space is designed to look like a Monet lily-pond. It’s been named the most romantic restaurant in the state for several years and creates the illusion of dining in the French countryside of Giverny, right down to dishes such as charcuterie, steak frites, and crème brulee.

Hotels & Vacation Rentals - Hamilton Township

On the grounds of the sculpture park, you’ll also spot gentle peacocks strolling and posing for photos. Their namesake inn is where to spend the night after your art experience.

The luxe 19th-century  Peacock Inn  offers 16 posh modern rooms in a 19 th -century mansion. High end touches include heated marble bathroom floors, rain head showers, and decadently thick down comforters. Suites also have whirlpool tubs for two and king size beds.

There’s no need to leave the serene property for dinner; the Perch at Peacock serves seasonal local produce and fish in elegant surroundings, with dishes such as Cape May Salt Oysters and New Jersey Line Caught Black Bass alongside pickled heirloom spring onions and charred fairy tale eggplant. Not full yet? There’s also a decadent high tea and brunch on offer in the charming inn.

Hotel The Peacock Inn

Glorious hidden gardens made for romance.

Once a private estate,  Greenwood Gardens  is like a slice of Europe transported to suburban Union County. The terraced gardens, tucked-away grottoes, and splashing fountains are all perfect for strolling hand-in-hand, and the secret tea house and secluded stone “folly” buildings might just be the perfect spot to pop  the  question. Even if you’re already betrothed, the 18th-century grounds make for a memorable setting to celebrate your romance any day.

After the sun sets, head to the nearby  Hilton Short Hills  where you can watch the twinkling lights of Manhattan from the rooftop bar while you sip some bubbly. Then head indoors to the sybaritic spa where you take a dip in the indoor or outdoor (summer only) pools.

In warm weather, volley on the hotel’s tennis courts, too. Then relax in the crisply decorated rooms that combine plush beds with sleek furnishings for a modern stay.

There’s also skiing in the winter at Mountain Creek Resort, just a mile away in Vernon, NJ.

In fall and spring, there are farm stands and fields full of sunflowers to pick, too. The 1-acre wine cellar is truly a treat for oenophiles, with 6,000 labels of the world’s finest vintages and the Wine Spectator Grand Award for every year it’s been open (yup, one of the best wine cellars in the country is right in rural New Jersey).

Canoe or kayak to the secluded island, or walk the pedestrian bridge. Bring a blanket and lay in the grass to watch the rapids (or you can ride them with  rafting or water tubing ). Not content to see the area on the ground? Lift up, up, and away for a sunrise or sunset  hot air balloon ride  for the two you.

The Definitive List of the Most Romantic Restaurants in New Jersey for Every Occasion

The Highlawn dining room

New Jersey's proximity to New York City doesn't do it any favors. The foodie haven known to house the best restaurants in the world casts a large shadow over its neighbors to the south. But the most romantic restaurants in NJ are worth a date night, lest you find yourself with a heaping helping of FOMO. (Why do you think Garden State legend Bruce Springsteen made the boss move to return to the place he frequently sang about running from? And why does another of the state's favorite sons, Jon Bon Jovi, croon, "Who says you can't go home?")

The easy access to the Atlantic and the views may have something to do with it, but the food likely played a role too. The Garden State offers seafood by the shore and some of the best Italian food on this side of the pond. To be clear, some of New Jersey's best date-night eateries certainly play into the state's surroundings. For instance, there's no shortage of romantic restaurants in NJ with a view of the city skyline. But the food and ambiance will make couples happy they're on the Jersey side of the river. Ready to dig in? These 24 spots make for some of the most romantic restaurants in NJ.

The Knot's Top Picks for Romantic Restaurants in New Jersey

The Highlawn kitchen

New Jersey is a small—but densely populated—state with many settings and cuisines. You'll find expansive fine-dining restaurants and cozy spots for standing date nights. The bountiful number of romantic restaurants in NJ by the water? They reel in out-of-staters and keep them coming back for more.

North Jersey Romantic Restaurants

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Edgewater

Much of the traffic in North Jersey heads into the city and back—the region is dotted with commuter towns inhabited by folks with Manhattan offices. But when the dinner bell rings, locals stay put to dine at restaurants with city vistas and the Hudson River in the foreground. Plus, bucolic garden settings offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of NYC.

The Highlawn, West Orange

The Highlawn food on a table

This high-end West Orange restaurant in a restored-from-ruin 1900s building sits atop a cliff in Eagle Rock Reservation. The Highlawn 's lofty vantage point gives diners the opportunity to take in dazzling New York City skyline views while they devour equally stunning New American cuisine. The Grill Room's praised steaks and raw bar with oysters are a surf 'n turf dream. An outdoor bar is perfect for al fresco aperitifs or extending the night when the weather is right.

1 Crest Dr, West Orange, NJ 07052

Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Edgewater

Situated smack-dab between the Lincoln Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar serves otherworldly seafood and steaks in a sleek white-tablecloth dining room. It's considered one of the most romantic restaurants in Edgewater, NJ, and a worthy choice for a proposal or anniversary dinner. Dim lighting and posh cushioned booths provide the fixings for a luxurious night out. One glance at the ample wine list and a bite of the juicy steaks will have pairs justifying the gridlock traffic it took to get there.

90 The Promenade, Edgewater, NJ 07020

Amanda's, Hoboken

Amanda's dining room

Set in a circa-1895 brownstone in the hip and happening Hoboken neighborhood, Amanda's has the warmth of being a decades-old family-owned establishment—a nice change for couples who primarily dine out on the other side of the Hudson. But it has an elegance you'd expect from a dining destination, courtesy of soft hues, tasteful art and a white-tablecloth dining room. The expansive eatery recently introduced a wine bar menu with suggested dish pairings, adding the experiential dining touch people crave these days. Brunch and early-bird dinner are served for couples who prefer to turn in early.

908 Washington St A, Hoboken, NJ 07030

The Chart House, Weehawken

The Jersey Shore is noted for its waterfront restaurants. But The Chart House offers water vistas a stone's throw away from the city. The seafood spot's large wall-to-wall windows give way to next-to-none views of Lincoln Harbor and the city skyline, including the iconic Empire State Building. Picture yourself popping the question or saying, "Cheers after all these years" on an anniversary date with a backdrop like that. The fish is fresh, the steaks are juicy and the hot lava cake is worth saving room for.

1700 Harbor Blvd, Weehawken, NJ 07086

Cafe Matisse

Cafe Matisse 's BYOB menu allows couples to bring a special sipper—ideal for uncorking a vino you promised to open on a specific anniversary, something that's aged as finely as your romance. A back patio garden room with Victorian-inspired decor like candle-lit chandeliers offers a charming serenity that feels miles away from the nearby city and MetLife Stadium. A four-course tasting menu changes with the seasons, allowing for new date-night culinary adventures throughout the year. During cooler months, savory-yet-spicy meatballs and vanilla-scented cheesecake topped with apples just sound cozy.

167 Park Ave, Rutherford, NJ 07070

Battello, Jersey City

Industrial-chic exposed beams combined with white linens make Battello a unique backdrop for a date night. Speaking of scenic touches, the Hudson River and Manhattan views sure do provide another one from the outside. Battello leans into its nautical surroundings, pairing marina decor (like a rowboat above the entrance) with a seafood-focused menu with Italian influences. Think a bright Mediterranean branzino or a hearty ravioli made with Maine lobster. Brunch dates on Saturdays and Sundays are also options.

502 Washington Blvd, Jersey City, NJ 07310

Bernards Inn, Bernardsville

Though the main bar is undergoing a facelift, lunch and dinner are still available at Bernards Inn Restaurant . Unlike other options on this list, Bernards Inn provides a more idyllic setting that plays into its Bernardsville surroundings and location within a quaint inn. Elegant drapes, hanging greenery and chandeliers with understated glamor add to the charm. An award-winning wine list includes celebratory options like Champagne and prosecco, ideal for couples toasting to an engagement or a big anniversary.

27 Minebrook Rd, Bernardsville, NJ 07924

Central Jersey Romantic Restaurants

Undici patio

Joke about the non-existence of Central Jersey all you want. It's a real place with food to write home about. And, in some cases, restaurants that serve ample portions, meaning you'll have food to take home with you. We'd call that a win-win.

The Frog and The Peach, New Brunswick

The Frog and The Peach dining room

Set in the emerging New Brunswick area, the garden room at The Frog and The Peach has lush greenery and white tablecloths at every turn, and is a coveted spot for couples on Friday and Saturday nights. The Frog and The Peach was farm-to-table before it was cool, and it remains an industry standard bearer. The menu highlights local purveyors. A truffle tasting elevates any date night, and wine dinners offer a chance to sip, savor and learn about different regions and pairings.

29 Dennis St, New Brunswick, NJ 08901

Grain House Restaurant, Basking Ridge

Located in the charming boutique hotel Olde Mill Inn, Grain House Restaurant 's fireplace, area rugs and warm lighting give it a cozy ambiance. The original ceiling beams from the 18th century offer up a throwback elegance, while the linen-free tablecloths invite couples to make themselves feel right at home. Creative twists on comfort classics are often the order of the day—think ribeye spring rolls and turkey burgers with cranberry relish. Happy hour is a happening affair in the pub—ditto for weekend brunches.

225 Morristown Rd, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920

Osteria Cucina Rustica, Marlboro

This lively spot many pass on their way to the Jersey Shore is worth a stop. Osteria Cucina Rustica is a destination all its own for next-level Italian—and those words aren't said about just any old restaurant in a state that takes pride in knowing all about good Italian food. Wooden tables and a brick patio lend a rustic appeal, while the straightforward menu leans into flavor and familiarity. Think paccheri in a slow-braised Bolognese ragu and a no-fuss, all-flavor spaghetti with fresh tomato and basil.

91 S Main St, Marlboro, NJ 07746

La Cipollina, Freehold

Another celebrated Italian eatery in "the 732," La Cipollina 's brick walls, tall interior columns, white tablecloths and tuxedo-clad staff give it an old world ambiance. BYOB gives couples more control over what they pair with La Cipollina's menu of traditional Italian offerings, which are known for getting proverbial standing ovations from taste buds. Berkshire pork osso buco with whipped potatoes and a flourless chocolate torte are among the menu items that consistently knock it out of the park.

16 W Main St A, Freehold, NJ 07728

Whispers, Spring Lake

A Victorian-inspired, white-linen spot with a BYOB policy, Whispers Restaurant is tucked away in the Hewitt Wellington Hotel, making it a perfect option for staycation couples. The intimate space is quiet (true to its name), allowing couples to chit chat as they head down memory lane or look ahead. Meats like steak and pork chops are said to be cooked to perfection. But save room for dessert. There's a triple chocolate treat that involves dipping chocolate ice cream in dark chocolate—need we say more?

200 Monmouth Ave, Spring Lake, NJ 07762

Undici, Rumson

This Italian-focused hideaway set in Tuscan farmhouse-style digs has an award-winning wine program with the largest selection of bottles from Italy in the state. Undici hosts wine tastings with food pairings throughout the year, allowing couples to savor the chance to sip new vinos and learn together. It's not all about the vino, though. The housemade pastas taste fresh and flavorful, and the gnocchi begs to be tried. Indoor and outdoor seating are available.

11 W River Rd, Rumson, NJ 07760

Jersey Shore Romantic Restaurants

Rooney's Oceanfront Restaurant patio/dining room

Down the shore, the ambiance and food at local restaurants are more than alright. The area by the Atlantic is, not surprisingly, home to some of the most romantic restaurants in NJ by the water. Many of the eateries lean into the nautical surroundings with some of the freshest fish in the state. From down-to-earth spots with elevated views to upscale options in renowned shore towns like Cape May and Atlantic, these Jersey Shore restaurants turn date night into a splash.

Rooney's Oceanfront Restaurant, Long Branch

Appropriately located on Ocean Avenue, Rooney's Oceanfront Restaurant features a bi-level deck. On a quintessential Jersey summer evening, consider opting for a table on the top level for a gorgeous view of the Atlantic below. Bonus points if you catch the sunset. The picturesque spot goes heavy on seafood and has a "fish board" option that's similar to a "build your own burger" menu. Choose a fish, preparation style and sides for a meal that's truly you.

100 Ocean Ave N, Long Branch, NJ 07740

Dock's Oyster House, Atlantic City

Dock's Oyster House food

This Atlantic City seafood house has left oyster fanatics feeling like they hit the jackpot since it opened its doors at the turn of last century. Dock's Oyster House naturally offers a raw bar. But there are other ways to get your oyster fix, too. The appetizer menu alone offers them broiled or fried, Rockefeller or wasabi-crusted. There's even an oyster stew. Landlocked folks rave about the meat offerings like filet mignon, saying it's cooked to perfection. Soft piano music that plays nightly in the background adds a peaceful touch to date night.

2405 Atlantic Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401

Peter Shields Inn and Restaurant, Cape May

Romantic elegance is the order of the day at Peter Shields Inn and Restaurant , a true Cape May institution located steps from the beach. The 1907 Georgian mansion setting is a breath of fresh air in a state full of both modern fine-dining restaurants and rustic Italian joints. The dramatic tall columns outside the front exterior and black-and-white awning over the covered deck immediately set the stage. Inside, the bright space with white tablecloths feels like a countryside escape. Appearances aside, the steak and seafood specials are known for hitting the spot. Bonus: Turn the date night into a romantic weekend by staying in one of the nine guest rooms.

1301 Beach Ave, Cape May, NJ 08204

Knife and Fork Inn, Atlantic City

Knife and Fork Inn steak and lobster

Another AC landmark, Knife and Fork opened in 1912 and long ago proved it had the chops to survive the oft-fickle Jersey Shore dining scene. The old world exterior immediately pops. The throwback appeal continues when couples step inside the white-tablecloth dining room with arched windows. The mahogany bar is ideal for a pre-dinner cocktail or extending the evening with a digestif (or both). In between, the upscale menu boasts everything from bone-in cowboy steak and filet mignon to a bright halibut.

3600 Atlantic Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401

Ebbitt Room, Cape May

Ebbitt Room corner room

This restaurant at the lauded Virginia Hotel offers a refined yet glamorous interior— Ebbitt Room has red booths, dazzling chandeliers and candlelight tables that truly brighten the space. The farm-to-table menu is ripe for long, multi-course affairs with your favorite human. Dishes are made using ingredients like free-range eggs, herbs and vegetables from Cape May's Beach Plum Farm. Vegetarians and gluten-free folks will feel at home here—options for both are available.

25 Jackson St, Cape May, NJ 08204

Crabby Jack's, Somers Point

Like a good long-term partner, Crabby Jack's accepts you as you are. The casual seafood joint is known for its relaxing vibes, gorgeous waterfront vistas and lively atmosphere. The straightforward menu has comforting classics like lobster rolls, chicken fingers and hot dogs. A raw bar with oysters, clams and grilled shrimp cocktail is also available. It's a great choice for couples looking for a fuss-free afternoon or sunset dinner in which flip-flops won't be frowned upon.

2 Broadway, Somers Point, NJ 08244

South Jersey Romantic Restaurants

Lamb chop entree with side of brussels sprouts and asparagus

South Jersey is loved for its proximity to the shore and the greater Philadelphia area . It's also full of some of the most romantic restaurants NJ offers. These spots are known for serving delicious Italian food and meats, noteworthy wines and all the cozy feels.

Caffe Aldo Lamberti, Cherry Hill

Pan-seared Berkshire Pork Chop

Fresh seafood, housemade pastas and an ample wine list (the cellar is home to more than 15,000 bottles) are three features that have made Caffe Aldo Lamberti one of the best romantic restaurants in NJ over the last three-plus decades. The upscale, white-linen dining room is tasteful and refined with understated artwork. A small outdoor area is also available when the weather is right. The prices are reasonable, with entrees coming in at under $40, making Caffe Aldo Lamberti a candidate for regular dinners together.

2011 Marlton Pike W, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002

Rat's Restaurant, Hamilton

Rat's Restaurant front enterance

Located within the sprawling, much-visited 42-acre sculpture park that is Grounds for Sculpture, Rat's Restaurant 's views are truly one-of-a-kind. The interior is a sight, too, making it one of the most romantic restaurants in the U.S. The chateau-style setting includes dark wooden chairs, glistening chandeliers, and dim lighting, leaving guests feeling like French royalty. Either location is the perfect spot to pop the question. The menu is a Francophile's dream—think duck a l'orange , steak frites, plenty of cheese appetizers and, of course, French onion soup.

16 Fairgrounds Rd, Hamilton Township, NJ 08619

Sofia Restaurant, Margate City

Dig into Mediterranean fare in romantic and elegant surroundings at Sofia Restaurant . The old world-inspired decor includes iron chandeliers, plenty of candlelight and arched doorways. The wine list features mostly Greek and Italian varietals, though domestic options like reds from Napa also make the menu. Greek-focused favorites like hummus, tzatziki and lightly seasoned seafood dishes all make the menu.

9314 Amherst Ave, Margate City, NJ 08402

Annata Wine Bar, Hammonton

Annata Wine Bar enterance

Tapas made for sharing, an affordable menu and live jazz music make Annata Wine Bar excellent for impromptu dates or couples in the getting-to-know-you phase. Small plates like pulled pork potstickers and stuffed peppers provide natural conversation starters. Learning something new together can add to a date-night memory, and Annata Wine Bar offers those opportunities in spades. The pages-long wine list has more than 150 options, and the staff welcomes the chance to discuss notes and recommend food pairings.

216 Bellevue Ave, Hammonton, NJ 08037

The ChopHouse, Gibbsboro

A high-end steakhouse in South Jersey, The ChopHouse is a no-brainer choice for a spare-no-expense special night out. Set beside the lake, the dining room's arched windows add an elegant touch without trying too hard. The menu has the chops, steaks and seafood you'd expect from a restaurant of The ChopHouse's caliber. But the spot offers something special that's perfect for pairs: A chance to sample any two of the restaurant's signature steaks family-style with all the fixings (sauces).

  • 8 of the Most Charming Small Towns to Visit in New Jersey

Admitted to the Union in 1787, the “Garden State” of New Jersey is indeed one of America’s most historically fascinating places. Add in stunning natural beauty, and the state will truly become one of the best places to discover in the northeastern part of the country. While such major cities like Newark and Trenton remain the best known, New Jersey also has a number of smaller but equally captivating towns that are perfect ways to get to know the State better. From American Revolution towns to coastal communities, these charming and welcoming small New Jersey towns are always ready to welcome guests. So wait no longer and come see the “Garden State” through an exploration of these great towns!

The City Center in Frenchtown, New Jersey

Formally established in the 1860s, the community of Frenchtown is beautifully located along the banks of the Delaware River and was so named by its early French-speaking Swiss settlers. Now home to a modest population of just under 1,400 residents, Frenchtown was initially founded as a ferry center that eventually grew into an important rail town. Today, this charming place remains a great destination for discovering 19th-century American history and enjoying the quaint beauty of nature. Spend time at the Frenchtown Historic District, where an eclectic range of buildings and 19th-century architectural styles can be admired. These include the Oddfellows Building (1879) and the Frenchtown Inn (1832), amongst others listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And, of course, serene views of the Delaware River are always on hand, while a visit to the nearby Delaware Canal State Park is a nice way to keep active. Here, stunning hiking, jogging, and biking trails combine with unique views of local wildlife for a memorable outing for the entire family.

Lambertville

The charming historic town of Lambertville, New Jersey.

Also located along the Delaware River, Lambertville was formally founded in the 1840s, although European settlers had been in the area since the 1730s. Today, with a population of just over 4,000 inhabitants, Lambertville remains a charming snapshot of colonial America and a typical small town in the USA. Known locally for its nice assortment of antique stores and other boutiques, the town has been called the “Antiquing Capital” of New Jersey, and it is indeed the perfect place for arts and crafts lovers to discover. Visit stores like the Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market, which includes collectible items from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the early 20th century amongst its collectibles. From there, why not head over to some of Lambertville’s fine art galleries, where a mix of local artists and renowned international creators are on display. And, of course, even just casually strolling through town is a most charming delight, where in addition to historic buildings (many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places), a welcoming smile, inviting hospitality, and stunning River views make visiting Lambertville a true pleasure all ages can enjoy.

Allenhurst residential historic district.

Located along the famed Jersey Shore, the town of Allenhurst was established in the 1890s, and today, a population of just under 500 people resides there. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Deal Lake, this quiet community with stunning water views is conveniently located just some 57 miles from New York City. Though it has some of the most expensive real estate properties in the entire United States, the beautiful neighborhoods of Allenhurst certainly make it a nice attraction, even for those just deciding to visit. Full of several historic homes and buildings, guests to town can admire a number of different architectural styles from the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, several of which have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. And with its small-town residential coziness, Allenhurst is definitely a most welcoming and charming place, where cute local businesses and scenic views make it a nice stopover for anyone driving the “Garden State.”

Allentown, New Jersey.

Allentown is situated in the Central Jersey region and is approximately halfway between Philadelphia and New York City. Formally established in the 1880s and with a modern population of just over 1,700 inhabitants, Allentown is a most charming place to discover some American history and relax all in the unique ambiance of small town USA. Explore the Allentown Historic District (listed entirely on the National Register of Historic Places), where one can appreciate up to 219 landmarks that transport visitors back to the days of the 1800s. These include the Allentown Presbyterian Church (1837), the Allentown Mill (1855), and the John Imlay House that dates to the 1790s! In addition the area surrounding Allentown has plenty of charming barns, farmland, and even wineries, and visitors can shop for some locally made agricultural products at any number of vendors. Add in peaceful residential streets and plenty of local businesses, shops, and restaurants, and being in Allentown is undoubtedly a nice excursion and a nice change of pace from the major urban centers.

Witherspoon Street in Princeton, New Jersey.

With a modern history dating to the mid-18th century, the beautiful college town of Princeton is indeed a delightful place to visit, work, and study. Home to the famed Princeton University (1746) and with a population of just over 30,000 residents, guests will find the most culturally diverse and welcoming ambiance in town, which is also a short drive from both New York City and Philadelphia. Admire the beautiful campus and its special stone façade buildings while in the town proper; a great array of galleries, museums, shopping centers, and restaurants fill the landscape, ensuring there is never a dull moment. Amongst the businesses and other points of interest include the Bent Spoon Ice Cream Shop, the Blue Point Grill, and the Princeton University Art Museum (set to re-open in 2025). With a number of fascinating historical sites to explore, including the Albert Einstein House and several Historic Districts, Princeton is never short on things to discover in a most pleasing mid-sized town environment.

An Aerial View of Deal, New Jersey

Though it has a population of just under 900 permanent residents, 80% of Deal ’s populace identify as Sephardi Jews, making it one of the most ethnically unique places in America. Located along the Jersey Shore, the beautiful beachfront of Deal has made it a popular destination for vacationers for decades, while its cultural identity has framed its special character. With its hot summers and mild winters, Deal is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, while its Jewish-American heritage can be appreciated in everything from restaurants, stores, and art galleries. Enjoy an authentic kosher meal, discover special clothing and items at a specialty store, or marvel at any of the town’s six beautifully designed synagogues. In addition, several Victorian-style homes can be admired in the residential neighborhoods that are truly postcard-perfect. Indeed, as a quiet beach location, Deal is a most welcoming destination, and its strong ethnic character makes it stand out as one of the best examples of the wide cultural diaspora in America.

Spring Lake

Aerial view of Spring Lake, New Jersey

Another beautiful Jersey Shore locale, the town of Spring Lake, has been attracting vacationers to its beaches for over 120 years. Established in the 1890s and home to a modest population of just over 2,700, thousands more descend on town annually for comfortable weather and scenic beach areas that are perfect for the whole family. Equally beautiful but less crowded than similar places like Atlantic City (some 75 miles south), Spring Lake also features a number of pleasing historic structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which make for nice photo opportunities. These include the Martin Maloney Cottage and the Sea Girt Lighthouse (1896). Meanwhile, the always inviting and panoramic boardwalk never ceases to charm all who visit. And, of course, as a beach town, tourists can expect to find plenty of fun opportunities to go swimming, sailing, and naturally sunbathing in a laid-back atmosphere. Add in welcoming local businesses and other restaurants, and it is not difficult to see why Spring Lake is such an inviting place to be in.

Chester Township

View of the historic Cooper Grist Mill in Chester, New Jersey.

Chester Township was officially established in 1799, and today, this most inviting and historically beautiful place of nearly 8,000 inhabitants continues to charm all who visit. Conveniently located just some 39 miles from New York City, tourists will find an alluring array of Victorian-era homes and buildings here, many of which are also included on the National Register of Historic Places. Beyond its historical attraction is also Chester’s scenic farmland, and the town is known for specializing in “agritourism,” where locally grown foods and green spaces are promoted as key components of the local economy. Meanwhile, outdoor lovers will not want to miss out on such beautiful park areas as Chubb Park and the 890-acre Hacklebarney State Park. At the latter awesome opportunities for hiking, cycling, fishing, and ice skating can be enjoyed in a serene and stunning natural setting. Indeed, whether it's taking in the sights of America’s past or enjoying the calming natural splendor all around, Chester Township is one New Jersey community that is definitely worth a weekend stopover.

Historically rich, naturally beautiful, and culturally alluring, New Jersey, or the “Garden State,” is undoubtedly one of the Northeastern United States’ most special places. Though, like any locale, majors continue to dominate discussion and attention, New Jersey also has plenty of smaller towns that are equally fun and fascinating. From the college ambience of Princeton, the beach splendor of Spring Lake, and the historic streets of Frenchtown, these wonderful smaller New Jersey communities are great ways to experience the State outside of cities like Newark or Trenton. Come and visit New Jersey and choose to spend some time in these awesome and inviting towns, where great memories will surely follow the young, old, and those looking for genuine American charm.

The 7 Most Romantic Coastal Escapes For Couples

romantic places to visit in nj

North Carolina

South carolina.

Courtesy of Bungalows Key Largo

The South is an inherently romantic place for its natural beauty, incredible architecture, award-winning food, and luxurious hotels and resorts. If you’re planning (or just daydreaming about) a special getaway with your significant other, the choices can almost be overwhelming—especially if spending time at the beach is a must. For many people, a trip for two requires unlimited sunshine and sand .

If that’s the case for you, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite coastal destinations for romance. Options include tropical hot spots, quaint fishing villages, resort towns, and remote islands. Some places offer stays with all the amenities you could ask for. Others are more tied to nature, and will appeal to active folks who love to be outdoors. And some are just sweet little towns ideal for reconnecting.

Whatever destination you choose, you and your partner will want to return again and again.

This charming Gulf Coast town offers laid-back leisure and plenty of luxury—the best of both worlds for a romantic getaway. Fairhope’s waterfront sunsets, ancient oak trees draped in live moss, and charming town square will put you two in a vacation state of mind as soon as you arrive. Spend some time browsing downtown shops, enjoy some lemony beignets in the courtyard at Panini Pete’s , then check in at the nearby Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa for pampering, pool time, and all the amenities you could ask for.

With its manicured courtyards, turquoise waters, and stark white buildings inspired by Bermudian architecture, Alys Beach offers Florida sunshine and shorelines, but looks like some place else entirely. Located off of Highway 30A , Alys Beach has a more secluded and slower-paced vibe than nearby towns like Rosemary Beach and Seaside. Part of this is due to the lack of hotels and high-rises. If you stay here, it will be in a beautifully appointed house or condo. Not only will you have more privacy, you’ll feel a bit like a local as you stroll the quaint boutiques and dine at the charming George’s At Alys Beach .

Bungalows Key Largo

A popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, Key Largo is also home to Bungalows , an adults-only, all-inclusive resort that is as romantic as a beach vacation can possibly be. Choose a private bungalow with an ocean or garden view, and enjoy private outdoor soaking tubs, a full-service spa, two pools with jacuzzis, beachside dining, plus yoga classes and access to bicycles, kayaks, snorkel gear, and more. It’s the ideal place for sun and fun, or to do absolutely nothing at all.

Anna Maria Island

If staying at a sprawling beach resort isn’t your style, and you prefer an easy-going beach town where you can spend the weekend in flip flops, try this lovely little island off Florida’s west coast. Anna Maria Island is big on old Florida charm, with its mom-and-pop shops, spotless public beaches, and waterfront bars and restaurants. Stay the night in a retro cottage , enjoy some oysters at the pier, and book a boat tour to go dolphin watching. A free trolley provides transportation throughout the island, making your vacation even more stress-free.

Cumberland Island

If you’re looking for a place to completely disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with your significant other, this island off the coast of Georgia is designed for just that. To get there, you’ll need to take a ferry from Fernandina Beach, and book a stay (well in advance) at the Greyfield Inn , the only hotel and commercial business on the island . The all-inclusive property, originally built by the Carnegie family in 1890, has 15 rooms and two cottages, and feels like staying in a grand old home—complete with a cocktail hour and communal meals. Surrounding the inn are more than 200 acres of incredible scenery including beaches, wild horses, historical ruins, forests, and wetlands, to name a few. You’ll want to stay here forever.

This quaint fishing town is beloved by its residents and Southern Living readers for its walkability, lovely historic district, good food, and friendly atmosphere. For a low-key trip where you can spend plenty of time outside and on the water, Beaufort is a wonderful option. Rent a kayak, go birdwatching, catch the sunrise from the boardwalk, have an alfresco meal at Beaufort Grocery Co., and stay at the comfortable, locally-owned Inn On Turner .

Isle of Palms

Charleston is a year-round destination for couples, and for good reason—the luxurious hotels, chef-driven restaurants, and breathtaking architecture can put anyone in a romantic mood. But the tourist-heavy city can also be busy and crowded. Instead, enjoy some peace and quiet and beach time at nearby Isle of Palms . Located a short drive away from downtown Charleston, this barrier island has seven miles of gorgeous shoreline where you might even spot a dolphin or two. Wild Dunes Resort and the Palms Oceanfront Hotel offer lodging options on or close to the water. And if you still want to take a day trip to Charleston, we don't blame you.
