Song of America

Song of America was built in Finland in 1982. It was sold on several occasions in the decades that followed, most recently to Louis Cruise Line and then to Celestyal Cruises following the shipping company’s insolvency. It’s been operating under the name “Celestyal Olympia” since 2014.

I remember taking my cruise on the SOA. I was so impressed by the size after sailing on RCCL's smaller ships. Of course now she would be considered very small at less than 40,000 tons. She was built in 1982 and sold in 1999 to Sun Cruises where it operated as the Sunbird. Since 2005 Thomson Cruises has been operating it as the Thomson Destiny.

Lets raise a glass to the many great times we shared on her:)

thanks for the info. i would love to see the ship in person to actually visualize the size of the ship. i remember first looking at the soa and thinking how huge the ship was. all meals were in dining room so you really got to know your servers and head waiter.

Yes, the Song of America was a great ship. Even though it is hard to believe today, the Song of America was actually one of the 10 largest passenger ships in the world when it entered service in 1982. I cruised aboard this ship in 1985 and had a wonderful time. The cabins were very small, but the public areas and pool deck were very nice.

I have seen pictures of the Song of America since she started sailing for Thomson. The exterior of the ship is not nearly as attractive because the large blue stripes on the sides have been removed.

i remember the rooms very well, especially the bathroom. my wife and i thought it was fine since it was our first cruise. do you know where the ship sails now.

Song of America was my first cruise also in 1993, a group of friends sailed on her from San Pedro and ended in Acapulco, but she continued thru the Panama canal to reposition. It was a great time!

to me the ship seemed so huge at the time. i would love to cruise it again.

ms Song of America (1982-present) Built in 1982 as ms Song of America by Oy Wärtsilä Ab (Wartsila New Ship Yard), Helsingfors (Helsinki), Finland, for (then) Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL). At 37,584 grt, she was one of the largest cruise ships built at the time.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line had operated throughout the 1970s with three ships; Song of Norway, Nordic Prince and Sun Viking, that had been built at the same yard in Finland, two of which (Song of Norway in 1978 and Nordic Prince in 1980) had been lengthened. Due to increased demand, RCCL decided to order a new and larger ship, again from the Wärtsilä shipyard, which was to become Song of America.

For the interior layout of this new ship, RCCL decided to adapt a system with cabins stacked towards the front, furthest away from engine noise, with public spaces to aft. This layout, widely used on large ferries built by Wärtsilä at the time, had rarely been seen on cruise ships. The public spaces on decks five and seven were built with one and a half times the standard deck height, leading to deck six only existing in the forward part of the ship. Unlike Song of Norway, Nordic Prince and Sun Viking, Song of America's Viking Crown Lounge, the trademark of all Royal Caribbean ships, completely surrounded her funnel providing passengers with a 360 degree view

She was delivered to her owners on 11 November 1982 and after a transatlantic crossing, sailed her maiden voyage on 5 December 1982 from Miami, Fl to Nassau, the Bahamas, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St, Thomas, USVI. During the early part of her RCCL career, this seven-day itinerary from Miami would be her staple. Later on, she would make several trips to the U.S. west coast via the Panama Canal, operating on the Alaska run in the summer season and down to the Mexican Riviera out of Los Angeles during the winter months.

She was sold in May 1998 for $94.5 million to Sun Cruises, a subsidiary of UK-based travel company Airtours. Sun Cruises immediately chartered the ship back to RCCL until March 1999. Unlike earlier ships sold by RCCL, her Viking Crown lounge had not been removed when she was handed over to her new owners. Sun Cruises had her refitted with additional suites on deck nine, renamed her ms Sunbird, and operated her for cruising around Europe, mainly in the Mediterranean. Later on during her Sun Cruises career, she received MyTravel colors.

When Airtours decided to pull out of the cruise vacation and ship ownership business, she was purchased by Cyprus-based Louis Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Cyprus-based travel and tourism group Louis plc, on 26 July 2004. History repeated itself when Louis chartered her back to Sun Cruises until February 2005 when she was laid up in Pireaus, Greece.

On 3 May 2005, she was placed on long-term charter (until 2011) by UK-based Thomson Cruises who renamed her Thomson Destiny. Thomson has used her for cruising in the Mediterranean as well as Red Sea, to the Canary Islands and to the west coast of Africa. She recently returned to the Caribbean, her initial area of operations with RCCL back in the early eighties.

Some more RCCL Song of America pics for those who sailed on her in those days:

thanks so much. the photos were absolutely awesome. i really enjoyed looking at them.

  • 2 weeks later...

i remember this cruise that friends of ours packed two cases of bud light in the suitcases. each had a beer explode and had to have their clothes cleaned onboard. lol

gottagoacruzn

I was on the Song of America, 11-8-88, when the ship caught fire, 3d night at sea, we had left Cozumel a couple of hrs before, had to go back to Cozumel the next day to wait for parts to fly in from Norway. They had to cancel the cruise and go back to Miami. Rcl gave out a letter to all on board, if you want a full refund, go see your travel agent, or if you want another cruise on the line, go see your t a. Five months later, I took another cruise on the Sun Viking:D Don't think the news picked up on it, cuz it was election night. No one was hurt or injured. When they sounded the alarm, I grabbed my life jacket and my camera, and took pictures on the way up to the life boat station, I still have those pictures today.

can you post those pictures please.

American Song Review

song of america cruise ship

The first in American Cruise Lines' "modern riverboat series," American Song puts a contemporary spin on traditional river cruising. With its centerpiece four-story glass atrium, glass-walled observation lounge, and private, furnished balconies with every cabin, the vessel is designed to bring the outside in.

American Song is the tenth in the U.S.-based cruise line's fleet, which also includes four paddlewheelers and five coastal cruise ships. ACL prides itself on the spaciousness of its staterooms, and American Song continues that tradition. Even the 10 single cabins measure 250 square feet. Two Grand Suites boast a whopping 900 square feet and come with wraparound balconies roomy enough to host cocktail parties or dinners. Six additional cabin categories range from 304 to 445 square feet. Seven cabins accommodate three passengers. There's one wheelchair-accessible room and some connecting cabins.

All cabins are equipped with satellite TV and DVD players. Wi-Fi is free.

The ship's sun deck sports a putting green, plus bocce and croquet areas. There's a small interior gym and outdoor exercise space. A complimentary self-service laundry is also available.

All meals are served in the open-seating dining room, though room service is available for breakfast. Complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres are served at the daily cocktail hour. Wine, beer and soft drinks are free at meals. Round-the-clock snacks are set out in the ship's main lounges. American Song will also have a cafe onboard called the Crow's Nest Cafe that will serve ligher fare.

American Song operates on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

American Song Itineraries

American song review, review of american song.

The 2018-built MS American Song cruise ship is the first newbuild in the American Cruise Lines ' "Modern Riverboat" fleet.

From this class/with the same design are the sisterships American Harmony (2019), American Jazz (2020), American Melody (2021), American Symphony (2022), American Serenade (2023).

American Song is identified by an IMO number 9871713 and is USA-flagged (MMSI 368046350).

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner American Cruise Lines (ACL) is the USA's largest river cruise company (headquarters in Guilford Connecticut) operational since 1991. The company specializes in cruise shipping on the USA's largest navigable inland waterways (rivers and lakes) as well as in cruises along the US East Coast, US West Coast and Florida. All ACL vessels feature some of the industry's largest passenger cabins with private balconies, spacious lounges and outdoor deck spaces, gourmet cuisine, top-quality enrichment program with many complimentary land tours and excursions, highly-personalized service by all-American staff and crew.

All ACL cruise ships are US-flagged and built by the company-owned Chesapeake Shipbuilding Yard in Salisbury (Maryland USA).

American Cruise Line ship class Modern Riverboat

Unlike anything seen before along American waterways, the innovative vessel brings a new dimension to river cruising in the United States. American Song integrates contemporary design with no sacrificing the comfort that American Cruise Lines is popular for. Quieter, wider, and faster than any other river ship, it is the most environmentally friendly in the industry.

Traditionally for large-sized US riverboats, American Song has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ship's cruise itinerary route. The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge). The technology is often implemented on some of the largest ferries and features an opening bow door.

While other small cruise lines repurpose old casino ships, American Cruise Lines decided to build brand new boats to maintain the company's reputation for premium quality and services. Each of the newbuilds features most innovative design, spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Each vessel is a traditional US built (at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury Maryland), as well as American-flagged and crewed.

Decks and Cabins

ACCL's American Song ship has 5 passenger decks (accessible via two elevators) and a total of 94 staterooms . The number of cabin categories is 7. All accommodations are Balcony cabins, with floor-ceiling sliding doors opening onto a private step-out veranda. The boat has no connecting rooms.

The smallest staterooms (including the studios / single-occupancy cabins) sizes start at 250 ft2 (23 m2). Other staterooms range between 305-330 ft2 (28-31 m2). Veranda Suites are 405 ft2 (38 m2). Owner's Suites are 445 ft2 (41 m2). The boat's largest staterooms are the two Grand Suites located aft on deck 3. Each measures 900 ft2 (84 m2) and features 2 walls of floor-ceiling windows, sliding doors (opening to a wrap-around balcony), separate bedroom/lounge area, marble bathroom (double-sink vanity),

MS American Song cruise ship (ACL)

Shipboard facilities and amenities

MS American Song features innovative interior design concepts - from the 4-story glass-walled Vestibule (Atrium) to spacious indoor and outdoor lounges, large open-deck spaces, floor-ceiling windows throughout the vessel. The 4-decks high Vestibule has floor-ceiling windows (portside and starboard) and SkyLight (transparent glass-roof cover) that allows natural light into the ship's interior.

Two Sun Decks (Lower on Deck 5-aft, and Upper on Deck 6) are fitted with sunbathing and shaded seating areas, putting green, deck-game area (shuffleboard). The ship has 5 lounges (2 with large outdoor terraces), Grand Dining Room (complimentary, glass-enclosed restaurant), Chart Room (Library Lounge), fore-located Main Lounge (deck 4), aft-located Sky Lounge (deck 4), indoor Gym/Exercise Room. The Upper Sun Deck (top-deck) is furnished with comfortable deckchairs and has 3x shaded seating areas (Canopies) and 2x SkyLights (glass-roof cover).

The aft-located (on Deck 4) Sky Lounge features premium furniture, floor-ceiling windows, glass-roof cover (SkyLight), direct access to an open-air Terrace (for relaxation and alfresco dining/Back Porch Cafe). Throughout the day, there are served beverages, snacks, freshly-baked cookies, and pastries. Sky Lounge's glass doors open to the Back Porch Cafe (alfresco dining venue) - a spacious Terrace furnished with wicker furniture (armchairs and 4-seat tables). The lounge bar serves water, soda, and light snacks throughout the day. A Complimentary Afternoon Tea service is offered between 3:30-4:30 pm. In the evening, there is a complimentary cocktail hour.

The fore-located (on Deck 4) Cascade Lounge is the boat's main lounge with floor-ceiling windows and glass-roof cover. It also serves as the ship's show lounge with a central stage, grand piano and ample comfortable seating area full of comfy armchairs and plush sofas. Here are served warm cookies starting at 10 am. The complimentary Afternoon Tea service (with fresh pastries) is at 3:30 pm. The free-drinks cocktail hour is at 5:30 pm. Root beer and ice cream are passed around during the evening show. The evening entertainment includes one show (beginning at 8:15 pm) lasting about 1 hour. The show program could be a live concert, solo performances, music tribute, themed music, movie trivia. The large space for the evening shows is in the room's center. Furniture is daily rearranged (sometimes 2 or 3 times a day) to suit the themed entertainment. This is also the place for the American Cruise Lines' enrichment program, consisting of differently-themed lectures (history, food and wine, literature, etc). Also hosted here are media presentations and the current ACL cruise itinerary and tours-related multimedia presentations and port talks.

The improved ship design allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships .

The ship has a modern propulsion system consisting of 2x azimuth thrusters ("Z-drives") manufactured by Veth (Holland). These 360-degree rotating propellers (1x forward, 1x aft) provide the boat with greater manoeuvrability and berthing flexibility.

The ship is powered by 2x Caterpillar marine engines running on low-sulfur diesel. These modern engines require less fuel and produce fewer emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) and soot particles in comparison to other boats on the US river cruising market.

The vessel was launched on November 17, 2017, which was 7 weeks ahead of schedule. The ceremony was held at the Chesapeake Shipbuilding yard in Salisbury MA. During the launch, the hull was floated-out from drydock into Wicomico River. Then it was positioned in the shipyard's East Outfitting Basin to receive the superstructure (upper decks) and outfitting.

On February 27, 2018, the shipowner American Cruise Lines announced the start of construction works on the second riverboat in this series ( American Harmony ) of all 5 same-design ships. For the 5 vessels series was again contracted the US shipbuilder Chesapeake Shipbuilding (Salisbury MD).

MS American Song's "Inaugural cruise" (maiden voyage) was initially scheduled for September 29, but later re-scheduled for October 6, 2018. The 8-day / 7-night "Mississippi River" itinerary was a roundtrip from New Orleans , with prices starting from USD 4800 (category AAR balcony cabin) and up to USD 7100 (Owner Suite).

Cool Cruiser

I noticed the thread about the Song of Norway and immediately thought of our first RCI cruise which was on the Song of America out of Miami. We actually cruised on her twice back in the 80's. I did a little research and she's passed through a number of different cruise lines since her retirement from RCI. I was encouraged to see that she's still afloat and cruising for Louis Cruise Lines out of Greece under the name Louis Olympia. But she was the one that really hooked us on cruising.

My first, too. September 1994, 7 night to Bermuda from New York. It took another seven years for me to cruise again but after that I was hooked.

I cruised on the Song of America with my parents in 1985 (seven-day Eastern Caribbean). Because the ship entered service in 1982, it was still fairly new. This was a wonderful ship that I remember very well. In 1985, the Song of America was Royal Caribbean's largest ship. This was my second cruise with Royal Caribbean (my first Royal Caribbean cruise was on the Sun Viking in 1983). The Song of America was a unique ship (no sister ships) which is fairly rare for Royal Caribbean.

Our first cruise was on Song of America on June 28th 1987, the day after our wedding. From somewhere in Florida we went to St Thomas, San Juan and Labadie. We were the last cruise that stopped at Labadie for a while due to political unrest. We had the best time, not just because we were on our honeymoon, on that ship. I had my dads huge VHS camcorder. It was a whole suitcase. I shot the shotgun at a few clay birds off the rear side of the ship. We had a bridge open house and looked at the radar. The food was great and I still remember our table partners. All 8 of them.

The wife was nervous at first and asked me what would happen if the ship sunk. I looked out at the sea and there was a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. I said "look at that" and she never was scared again on any cruise! I was very impressed that the crew was constantly cleaning everything. I have been in hospitals that were not half as clean! In those days you did not have sea pass cards. On the last sea day we were on the pool deck having a few drinks and a wind gust blew my credit card off into the sea. What a time we had explaining that to the purser!

On the last day my wife did the aerobics class and the next day she was limping a little when we got off the plane at home. My grandfather said "you should not have been so hard on her" My wife turned bright red!

What a great trip. We love that ship.

Haha

She was docked next to us last month in Kusadasi, Turkey... still sailing with Louis Cruise Line..

Our Honeymoon was on the Song of America - 22 Years ago! My avatar is my beautiful bride and I boarding her back in 1991.

My first cruise was also on Song of America in 1990! I have fond memories.

30,000+ Club

Yes, for sure remember her! Not our first ever cruise, but our first on RCCL. :)

paws223

Loved cruising because of this ship, also the first cruise with our son.

suzyluvs2cruise

Song of American was our first cruise in April 1987. Wonderful memories! :)

When did RCL start naming their ships "_____ of the Seas?" And which ship was renamed to become the Empress of the Seas? That's where I met my husband in 2006 so the Empress is very special to me.

Soveriegn was the first ship to bear the "of the Seas" moniker. Nordic Empress was the ship they renamed Empress of the Seas after her refurbishment.

cruiserhal

Oh yes, my first cruise. Sailed on her 5 times with the first being in 1988. Loved that ship. One item I always remember (as near as I can remember these days) was the passenger count was 1404 but deck chair count was 1600. This was on the specification sheet they gave everyone. I still have it somewhere but don't know where at this minute so forgive me if I am off by a few.

Here is another whose first cruise was on the Song of America. We went to Bermuda from NY in1996. As an earlier poster stated, we've been hooked ever since! We thought she was so huge! Actually, i think that is the perfect size for a cruise ship!

20 years ago yesterday we had our Honeymoon Cruise on Song of America..........Still Married, Still Cruising! :)

I remember Song of America from way back when she was considered a large ship! In 1985 we were on Nordic Prince for an overnight stay in St. Thomas and Song of America was in port with us. We were able to go on board to have lunch and were amazed at how "big" a ship she was. We later cruised on her twice and enjoyed each trip.

My first cruise with DH was in '97 on Song of America to Bermuda!!

Then '98 & '99 to Bermuda on the gorgeous Nordic Empress. Hooked on cruising and Bermuda ever since.

Proudmom1120

I certainly remember Song of America. It was my first cruise and also my honeymoon. That was back in 1990. That cruise got me addicted to cruises. Went to Cozumel and Ocho Rios. My husband and I will be going on the Explorer in April. Looking forward to see the changes Royal has made.

LisaGoeke

Yes! Song of America was my family's first RCI cruise. Ever since then we've mostly sailed with RCI. My parents loved the Song of America so much we sailed on it six times! First time in 1983, last time in 1990. Fun times! Makes me want to dig through our old pictures....

Holland America Line Enhances Entertainment with New Productions, Music Lineup and Destination-Specific Performances

New headliner shows anchor an expanded slate of entertainment offerings fleetwide

Seattle, Wash., April 11, 2024 — Holland America Line is adding to its award-winning entertainment lineup with the introduction of several new mainstage experiences in 2024. Four new shows will put a fresh spin on the classic cruise production format. Additional new productions tailored to various regions will provide a variety of performances focusing on the local culture where ships are cruising.

Beyond the mainstage, Holland America Line is adding Rolling Stone Lounge to more ships and enhancing its popular Billboard Onboard music experience.

“Over the past several years we’ve built one of the strongest entertainment experiences at sea, working with world-class musicians and dancers,” said Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment and enrichment. “Adding these new theater experiences continues to build on our momentum.”

Beginning in February 2024, the cruise line is set to debut four shows reuniting singing and dancing in a new mainstage experience. These concert-style productions are fronted by three multi-talented headliners, who will be supported by an ensemble of singers and dancers.

The new shows are:

·         “Song & Dance”: Set on a studio backlot, two leading men front a concert of musical numbers from Broadway, Hollywood and more.

·         “Class Act”: Las Vegas goes to sea in this elaborate production, celebrating iconic female performers of the concert and nightclub stage.

·         “All That!”: Be a part of our studio audience as we present our take on the classic TV variety shows of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Headliners share the spotlight combining singing, dancing and a bit of comedy.

·         “Hey, Mr. DJ”: Iconic radio DJs introduce songs from the ’60s through today in this concert of pop hits.

These new shows will be the anchor for entertainment programming. They debuted on Eurodam in February 2024, followed by Rotterdam, Zuiderdam and Nieuw Statendam by the end of June with more ships to follow.

Complementing the new shows on the mainstage, Holland America Line is featuring productions specific to each region so guests will experience a different lineup when they cruise in Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, South America and other areas around the world.

Unique Programming for Specific Regions

Caribbean cruises on Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Eurodam will feature the unique orchestral steel drum concerts of Island Magic playing a versatile repertoire ranging from traditional island sounds to unique versions of classical and pop songs. Cruises to Canada and New England on Volendam and Zuiderdam will introduce the new show Breton Thunder , an authentic Nova Scotia music experience highlighting the area’s European roots. Sailings on Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam and Zuiderdam in Europe will feature classical string music with the Chordial Chamber Trio and Pantheon , a dynamic group of European tenors .

Alaska cruises will continue to feature the elite members of the Step One Dance Company, who blend innovative choreography with artistic video projection to create truly immersive experiences. Major Fourth will also take the stage with four singers delivering impactful harmonies that cover all genres and decades. Sailings in Alaska will also feature a new program called Destination: Alaska . This show is aimed at getting guests excited about the destination and will highlight shore excursions they can book to make the most of their cruise.

Rolling Stone Lounge , which showcases a seven-piece band playing everything from rock to pop to R&B, was added to Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam in December 2023. The music venue has already been a staple on board Noordam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam and Westerdam. Billboard Onboard will embrace an updated piano bar concept through the lens of Billboard’s chart-topping hits, with a different music theme each evening. B.B. King’s Blues Club continues to be the centerpiece of the music scene on Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam. Meanwhile, a live, classical music trio will be featured on select European voyages on the mainstage, and on Grand and Legendary Voyages in the Explorer’s Lounge.

Entertainment offerings vary by ship depending on the length of the cruise and destination of the ship.
