Simac Ladies Tour 2023 overview

The Simac Ladies Tour, which takes place from September 5 to 10, is one of the longest-running stage races on the women’s calendar, having been raced every year since 1998. Over the years it’s also been known as the Holland Ladies Tour and the Boels Ladies Tour.

At six stages in length, the Simac Ladies Tour is one of the longer stage races on the calendar. However, due to the flat terrain in the Netherlands, it’s not comparable to the more challenging week-long races. There are definitely no mountains here, it’s more of a race for sprinters, Classics specialists and time trialists, thanks to the regular inclusion of a TT stage.

With a bit of something for everyone, the general classification win usually goes to a rider who can do it all - it’s no surprise that Marianne Vos won this race four times in a row. Increasingly, the organisers have been including tougher challenges and climbs we see in the Classics, such as the Cauberg, to up the difficulty of the Simac Ladies Tour.

Simac Ladies Tour 2023 contenders

Being a race that suits the all-rounders, it can be hard to pinpoint who’s going to perform well at the Simac Ladies Tour: on a good week, any number of riders could take the overall victory here. And it isn’t necessarily about winning stages, either - consistent finishes across the board can add up to a GC win.

That said, there are some stand-out all-rounders who will be looking at the 2023 race as a place to pick up an overall win. If she wants to come back and defend her title, Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx) is possibly even more well-poised to win this year than she was in 2022. The Dutchwoman has improved her climbing significantly this season, so even the toughest stages in the Netherlands will be easier for her this year. And with a still near-unbeatable sprint, she’ll be able to pick up top stage finishes and bonus seconds across the week.

Perhaps on the opposite end of the spectrum - a rider who will do well across the week but find it harder to win a stage - is Riejanne Markus (Jumbo-Visma). Markus came fourth at the Simac Ladies Tour in 2022, but is in the perfect mould of a winner of this race: she can finish well in the bunch, she can climb well, and importantly, she is a strong time trialist. The 28-year-old won the hardest stage of last year’s edition, and is more than capable of upgrading that to an overall win this year.

Lastly, a rider who has won this race twice before and will be very motivated: Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar). Why will Van Vleuten be so motivated? Because the Simac Ladies Tour is set to be her final UCI race before she retires, finishing near her home town in the Netherlands. The Dutchwoman just won the Tour of Scandinavia, so the form is there, but the flatter, punchier Simac Tour may be a tougher ask. That said, if she can take time in the two time trials and attack on one of the harder days, it's not inconceivable that she might finish her career with one last victory.

What happened in the Simac Ladies Tour 2022?

The 2022 Simac Ladies Tour was won by Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) after she dominated in the early sprints, and put in an impressive time trial to hold onto her GC lead. She also proved her climbing ability on the Cauberg stage to stick with the leading group and not concede any time.

Simac Ladies Tour history

First raced in 1998, the Simac Ladies Tour was founded by members of the Dutch federation, then named the Holland Ladies Tour. It was born out of a desire to create a longer stage race in the Netherlands, which was steadily producing a number of strong riders and teams, to complement the one-day races and shorter events already in the region. The launch in 1998 also coincided with the World Championships coming to Valkenburg, which took place a month after the inaugural edition of the Holland Ladies Tour.

The first edition of the tour was composed of five road stages and a prologue, and was won overall by Elsbeth Vink (Opstalan). The following year, it was Leontien van Moorsel (Hartol-Farm Frites) who took the win, two big names of Dutch cycling already adding their name to the roll of honour, and establishing the race’s place in the calendar. Many of the stars of the women’s peloton have topped the podium at the Simac Ladies Tour, including Kristin Armstrong, Annemiek van Vleuten and Marianne Vos on four occasions.

The race has gone through several guises in its time, firstly the Holland Ladies Tour, then the Profile Ladies Tour, and most recently the Boels Ladies Tour. From 2021, the race has been sponsored by Simac.

SIMAC Ladies Tour Preview

  • 1 September 2023
  • Latest news , News , Vox News

The SIMAC Ladies Tour is arguably the most prestigious Dutch stage race, and it enjoys its quarter century edition this year. The race comprises a Prologue and five stages, including an individual time trial. Last year’s winner was Lorena Wiebes, then riding for Team DSM, which gives a good indication of the type of rider who you can be expected to perform well, as the parcours is largely flat.

Having said that, this race does include a stage with significant climbs, including some of the iconic bergs featured in the Amstel Gold Race, so while sprinters may contest many of the stages, the GC winner will need to manage a fair bit of climbing, as well as being able to go well against the clock.

The race takes place from Tuesday 5 th to Sunday 10 th September 2023.

Prologue – Tuesday 5 th September – Ede – Ede (2.4km, ITT)

simac ladies tour uitzending

A short ride against the clock will kick off proceedings, and it will be a matter of seconds that will allow the first leader’s jersey of the race to be awarded and put the rest in order heading into the first full stage.

Stage 1 – Wednesday 6 th September – Gennep – Gennep (139.6km, Flat)

simac ladies tour uitzending

The first full road stage of the race centres around the city of Gennep. The course features two loops of a 62.7km circuit, followed by a shorter 16.3km lap heading to the finish line. It’s a pan flat course so almost guaranteed to finish with a bunch sprint.

Stage 2 – Thursday 7 th September – Leuven – Leuven (7.2km, ITT)

simac ladies tour uitzending

Stage 2 sees a second opportunity for riders to go against the clock, this time in a slightly longer time trial. It’s a mostly flat course around Leuven, although there is one bump to overcome after just one kilometre, and it will allow slightly bigger gaps to open between the GC riders, though nothing that cannot be overcome in the later stages of the race.

Stage 3 – Friday 8 th September – Emmeloord – Lelystad (149km, Flat)

simac ladies tour uitzending

Beginning in the town of Emmeloord, the peloton will cross the road bridge over the water to Lelystad, before completing two 60.4km laps of the town. There is barely a hiccup in the road all day, and another completely flat day will of course appeal to the fast women in the bunch, who will likely compete in a bunch gallop for the line.

Stage 4 – Saturday 9 th September – Valkenburg – Valkenburg (131.6km, Hilly)

simac ladies tour uitzending

It’s a day for the Ardennes classics specialists on Stage 4, which takes the peloton around the city of Valkenburg, beginning at Landal castle and ending on the infamous Cauberg. The route travels through South Limberg, and finishes with two laps of a circuit featuring the Cauberg along with the Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg. Those who have performed well in the Ardennes Classics will enjoy the opportunity to stretch their legs on some of the region’s most famous bergs.

Stage 5 – Sunday 10 th September – Arnhem – Arnhem (150.5km, Flat)

simac ladies tour uitzending

The longest stage of the race is also the final stage, so differences in the general classification could still be overcome on a day that sees the action begin and end in the Gelderland province of Arnhem in the centre of the Netherlands, via two different circuits. The first of these takes in Emmapiramide and the Posbank, on a loop that’s repeated seven times, before the race heads through Arnhem for five laps of a circuit which features the Zijpendaalseweg and the Apeldoornsweg. It’s likely to be a sprint finish on the Zijpendaalseweg, unless the GC riders are looking to launch a final attack in their search for victory.

Riders to Watch

Annemiek van Vleuten of Movistar closes out her season, and her career, at home with the SIMAC Ladies Tour. It’s likely to be an emotional send-off for the Dutch former World Champion, and Annemiek will be hoping to finish with her held high, so expect her to challenge for the GC win and perhaps some stage wins along the way, where she feels she has the legs.

She will face tough competition as always from the likes of SD Worx, Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM and FDJ SUEZ.

Big races are coming thick and fast for the women’s peloton and next up is the six-day Simac Ladies Tour.

Now into its 23rd edition, it is one of the longest established races on the calendar and offers aggressive racing over lumpy terrain. It has gone under many different names over the years with IT company Simac coming in as the title sponsor last season.

Despite the country dominating the peloton, the six-day race is the only WorldTour stage race in the Netherlands with the one-day Amstel Gold Race and Ronde van Drenthe the two other top-tier races on Dutch soil.

  • Leah Kirchmann announces retirement following road world championships
  • Rejuvenated and recharged: Tayler Wiles eyeing return to the pro peloton after surgery
  • After some high-profile shockers for the Dutch, Lorena Wiebes puts national team on a high again

Unsurprisingly, it’s a race that the home nation has dominated with 14 of the 22 editions won by a Dutch rider. Marianne Vos, who else, has the absolute record for overall titles with four GC victories.

Last year saw Chantal van den Broek-Blaak win the race for the second time after grabbing the overall lead from her soon-to-be teammate Marlen Reusser with an attack on the lumpy and technical stage 4.

With often narrow and twisting roads to contend with, stage winners and overall victors need to be alert at all times. Positioning in this race is as key as form.

The Simac Ladies Tour always provides tough racing

After it featured two time trials in last year’s race, this season will see just one test against the clock. It will likely open up the GC a little bit, but the overall winner will need to have a strong TT in her arsenal if she’s to win.

The race will start with a technical circuit race around Lelystad, which is just west of Amsterdam. The riders will take on just under 2.5 laps of the 60.4km circuit with the stage topping out at 141.2km.

It may be one of the only days of racing that takes place almost entirely below sea level, though it still has a classified climb. The stage should end with a bunch sprint, but anything could happen as the peloton sweeps its way around the plentiful bends that litter the course.

Moving south from Lelystad, stage 2 will start and finish in Ede and takes the riders on another circuit course. At 40km, it is a shorter circuit than what was on offer on day one and it will take the riders on a winding route north before returning to Ede. It is another technical finale that should conclude with a sprint finish.

Stage 3 sees the race skirting the border with Germany as it heads further south to Gennep. Another fast and furious circuit race is on offer with two classified climbs along the way. The stage will be run over two laps of a bigger 62.7km course before it finishes with one loop around a shorter 16.3km circuit.

The final days of the race see some far more undulating roads, starting with stage 4. Another circuit lies before the riders, but with a small difference. The peloton will ride a short distance out of Landgraaf before riding three loops of the 41.6km circuit and then returning back to where it started. Four classified climbs litter the route, providing plenty of opportunities to launch an attack off the front of the group.

Stage 5 features the only time trial of the whole race. The 17.8km route takes the riders from Sittard-Geleen to Beekdaelen. Last year’s primary TT offering was an out-and-back route that suited the power riders, but this one could hardly be different. It twists and turns itself around the area with hardly a straight section of road for the TT purists to really get into a groove.

The race closes out with possibly its toughest stage, which takes place around Arnhem. Once again, the riders will have to tackle some technical circuits that could see the bunch split up. It begins with five laps of an 8km circuit before switching over to complete seven laps of a 14km loop.

To finish, the riders will come back to the shorter circuit for one final lap before the rush to the line. At 15.3km, it is the longest stage of the race and its relentless up and down will make for a difficult day out. If the gaps are still close after the time trial, we can expect a lot of attacking.

The contenders

A good time trial is necessary for overall success

With so many sprint-style stages, the time trial will surely have a defining role to play in the overall classification so anyone looking to take away the title will need a good TT under them. Defending champion Van den Broek-Blaak will be a favorite again with a good engine that will keep her close in the TT and an aggressive style of racing to help her make up any time lost.

Time trial world champion Ellen van Dijk will fancy her chances after finishing third overall last year. She lost time in some of the road stages last year, but she’s in good form and has a stage race win under her belt already at the Baloise Ladies Tour. Her teammate Audrey Cordon-Ragot could be another option, depending on how the road stages play out.

Jumbo-Visma’s Riejanne Markus will be a serious threat, too, and she’s due a stage race win soon. She finished second to Ellen van Dijk at the Bloeizone Fryslan Tour earlier this year and reached the podium in the TT at the European Championships. Anna Henderson is also a strong GC option for the team.

The sprints will be hotly contested with a host of fast talent on the start line. Recently crowned European champion Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) is the standout rider in the sprint contest with more wins than anyone else this season.

She will face tough competition from Lonneka Uneken (SD Worx), Chloe Hosking and Amalie Dideriksen (Trek-Segafredo0, Clara Copponi and Emilia Fahlin (FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope), Shari Bossuyt (Canyon-SRAM), Chiara Consonni (Valcar-Travel & Service), Coryn Labecki (Jumbo-Visma), Rachele Barbieri (Liv Racing Xstra), Georgia Baker and Ruby Roseman-Gannon (BikeExchange-Jayco), and Julie De Wilde (Plantur-Pura).

Simac Ladies Tour History

The Simac Ladies Tour, formerly known as the Holland Ladies Tour, is a cornerstone event in the Women’s WorldTour having had that status since 2017. Its history goes back to 1998, before becoming a UCI race in 1999. In 2022, Lorena Wiebes joined the list of winners with her stellar all-round performance. She won the opening two stages before hanging on with a great performance on the hills to take the GC win. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak seized the title in 2021. She didn’t win a stage in her GC win but was consistent across the week to beat Marlen Reusser by 17 seconds. Yet, the extraordinary Marianne Vos who remains the biggest winner in the Simac Ladies Tour history. She has an astonishing record of four successive titles to her name between 2009-2012, setting a standard that hasn’t been matched yet. Another Dutch legend Mirjam Melchers made her indelible mark by clinching victories in both 2000 and 2004 as well.

Table of Contents

This year’s race sees fewer time trial kilometres, with just a 2.4km prologue and 7.1km time trial in Leuven to earn time. There are two stages that feel like obvious sprint stages early on before a pair of lumpier stages. Stage 4’s race around Valkenburg will feature the Cauberg and other climbs from the Amstel Gold Race The final day in Arnhem will feature lots of short sharp accelerations and should be a reduced bunch sprint.

Simac Ladies Tour 2023 Contenders

Annemiek van Vleuten

The Annemiek van Vleuten retirement tour reaches its climax on home roads at the Simac Ladies Tour. The retiring star has said that she won’t be going for GC but will be soaking in the adulation from the crowds for the final time. We obviously heard that about the Tour of Scandinavia as well but this time, the parcours doesn’t really suit too much other than the final days. Even then the climbs in Valkenburg aren’t quite tough enough for her to make a big difference. The couple of short TTs also don’t swing the balance much either. She will still do fine but don’t expect any major solo breaks or a big effort to win this. Arlenis Sierra might be a threat for stage wins via the sprint, particularly the hilly stages late on. The Cuban isn’t in the best form though at the moment, with her best recent result coming in a time trial. We’ve not seen Mareille Meijering since June but she can do well in Valkenburg after top-10s in hilly one-day races this year. We’ve not seen much in terms of results from Floortje Mackaij recently, she’s been firmly working for others but the Simac Ladies Tour could see her back to a bigger role.

Lorena Wiebes won here last season and if anything, the race seems more likely to be hers this year if she can beat her teammates. The amount of time trial kilometres has been reduced, with the prologue and short TT both firmly in the wheelhouse of a powerful sprinter now. This time last year we weren’t sure about her climbing on a Valkenburg stage but that seems to have been smashed out of the water this season. There are potentially 3-5 stage wins for Wiebes here and if so, that’s probably a strong GC as well. Teammate Lotte Kopecky will also be here, repping the new rainbow bands jersey. She’s won a non-UCI race in it already but there are chances here too. If Wiebes is the main nod, then Kopecky can capitalise in either GC through the TTs or be released as the team’s best option on Stages 4 and 5. It will largely depend on how the GC shapes up by then but strong TTs could put the Belgian in the prime position. Demi Vollering is also going to be here too. The shorter TTs won’t suit quite as much as a longer one but when it comes to the Valkenburg stage this year’s Amstel Gold Race winner (after 2 years in a row finishing 2nd) will be a threat. Also can’t rule out Mischa Bredewold getting involved after her win at the weekend in Plouay .

Jumbo-Visma has got a good line-up here with plenty of all-round threats. Riejanne Markus took a great stage win in last year’s Simac Ladies Tour, ghosting clear on the climbs and not being caught again. The TTs are short but Markus should be able to make up time. It’ll be tough to see her beat SD Worx in GC but maybe the podium is there. Anna Henderson is a great prologue and TT rider and might be able to put herself into the top-10 contention as a result. 4th in the World Championships TT was a great result but this will be a different effort. She was 3rd in GC at the similar Baloise Ladies Tour this year. Karlijn Swinkels is due to leave the team this off-season but had a great 7th place at Plouay this weekend. She’s got a useful fast finish and will also do well against the clock.

Kasia Niewiadoma

Canyon SRAM might not pull off a strong GC threat here, even with Kasia Niewiadoma , unless the Pole can avoid losing time against the clock. The former Amstel Gold Race winner will relish the Valkenburg stage and maybe she can finally break her winless duck. Maike van der Duin might be back to her best here, her crash at the Madison in the World Championships seemed to carry over into the Tour of Scandinavia. It’s also the debut race on the team for new signing Zoe Backstedt and it’ll be interesting to see how she fits in.

Christina Schweinberger is having a great season, which the Austrian continued with 6th this weekend in the Classic Lorient Agglomeration. She’s on a run of 4 top-10 results in a row now at the very highest level. Her teammate Julie de Wilde will also be a fun one to watch this week. She can do well in the prologue and will be in the hunt for stage wins too.

Tamara Dronova continues her solid consistent season with 13th place at the weekend. She was 4th on the last day of the Tour of Scandinavia too and is able to take top-10 results almost anywhere. Her TT isn’t amazing so that will probably hamper GC efforts but all of the sprints and hilly stages are probably in her wheelhouse.

Lidl-Trek will be really looking to take the race to their usual rivals SD Worx. Elisa Balsamo will be their sprint threat and might also be able to contest the hilly stages. The team pursuiter should be ok on the prologue and the TT isn’t much longer either. She’s starting to come back into form after the injuries she took at RideLondon Classique. There’s also Tour de l’Avenir Femmes winner Shirin van Anrooij . Her 30km solo break for the win was a huge effort, reminiscent of her win at Trofeo Alfredo Binda earlier this year. She should also be a GC threat here too. Lucinda Brand might also have a shout after winning the Baloise Ladies Tour. The TT there and 4 consistent finishes in the top 4 took her to the GC victory.

Parkhotel Valkenburg has a strong recent result from almost every one of their riders at the moment. Femke Gerritse was 2nd on the final day of the Giro Toscana, Lieke Nooijen won 2 Districtenpijl – Ekeren-Deurne , Quinty Schoens was 2nd at Kreiz Breizh Elites and Scarlett Souren 2nd at Egmont Cycling Race. It’s tougher against Women’s WorldTour opposition naturally but the entire team is able to be a threat on any given stage.

Charlotte Kool

Charlotte Kool will be back going head-to-head against Lorena Wiebes. The tally has evened out since the UAE Tour earlier in the year but Kool represents one of the few riders able to beat the best sprinter in the peloton. 11 victories this year have been a great return steeping up in Wiebes’ shoes. Pfeiffer Georgi is another rider for whom the TTs at this year’s Simac Ladies Tour might help push her up the GC. 7th at the Amstel Gold Race this year means that she could be a threat in Valkenburg too.

Chiara Consonni will be confident after winning at GP Beerens on Sunday. The Italian won the final stage of the Giro Donne and had a 4th and 6th at the Tour de France Femmes before focusing on the World Championships. She’s not quite on the same tier as Wiebes/Balsamo/Kool but she is just below trying to close the gap.

Uno-X has a few stage-hunting possibilities. Susanne Andersen did an impressive 100km+ breakaway at Classic Lorient Agglomeration this weekend . She was powerful on the repeated short steep hills and we’ve also seen her clock up strong sprint finishes, including 2nd at Ronde van Drenthe . Maria Giulia Confalonieri is looking back to good form again. 4th at GP Oetingen was followed by 19th in Plouay. The Italian is a fast finisher on tough stages. Amalie Didikersen might be the flat-stage option. The Dane won the GP Eco-Struct earlier in the season and has top-10s in the Giro Donne and Konvert Kortrijk Koerse since.

Ceratizit WNT comes with some strong options. There’s Arianna Fidanza , Martina Fidanza and Kathrin Schweinberger. Martina just finished 2nd at the GP Beerens behind Chiara Consonni, to go with another 2nd place at Veenendaal-Veenendaal and the Ronde de Mouscron victory. Sister Arianna Fidanza works well in tandem and after a strong spring has mainly been helping out the other fast finishers on the team. She hasn’t had a top-10 result since 2nd place at the Bretagne Ladies Tour back in May. Kathrin Schweinberger is in form at the moment, with 4th place at Konvert Kortrijk Koerse and just outside of the top-10 at GP Oetingen and GP Beerens.

If we get the Ally Wollaston who won the Festival Elsy Jacobs this year back on the road then the New Zealander might find herself in the top-10 of GC. She can certainly climb well on rolling hills and will be okay in the short TTs as well. She was knocking on the door with 3rd and 5th results at the Giro Donne before focusing on the track before the World Championships. I suspect Romy Kasper will be supporting but she had a strong Thüringen Ladies Tour this year and might be the sort of rider who can win a stage from the break at the Simac Ladies Tour. Maaike Boogaard is back in form as well, she was able to go clear at the GP Oetingen to finish 3rd ahead of the chasing peloton . She’s got a decent time trial too.

About Simac

Simac Ladies Tour

Simac is the new main sponsor of the Holland Ladies Tour. The race will therefore be held from 24 to 29 August 2021 under the name Simac Ladies Tour.

Eric van Schagen (CEO Simac Techniek NV) and Thijs Rondhuis (director Courage Events) have signed an agreement whereby Simac will act in 2021 as main sponsor and namesake of the Simac Ladies Tour, the only multi-day UCI Women's World Tour race in the Benelux. There is an option to extend the agreement for another two years.

simac ladies tour uitzending

Eric van Schagen: “At Simac we have been closely involved in cycling for many years. On the one hand as namesake of the amateur classic Simac Omloop der Kempen. And on the other hand through our sponsorship of the last two editions of the European Cyclo-Cross Championships in the Netherlands in 2018 and 2020 and the European Track Cycling Championships in 2019 in Apeldoorn. Just when we were looking for opportunities to further propagate our ambitions, contact with the Ladies Tour was established. This turned out to be a good match almost immediately. We therefore have confidence in a good cooperation and are convinced that this sponsorship will make an important contribution to our brand awareness in the Benelux. ”

simac ladies tour uitzending

Thijs Rondhuis of Courage Events was waiting in these uncertain times due to COVID-19 to find a new main sponsor. "The situation is uncertain as a result of the pandemic, the cancellation of the 2020 edition did not help either. But on the other hand, everyone can see how women's cycling is booming. In some competitions the women nowadays get more exposure than the men, the public embraces the attacking style of driving. Immediately after the first contacts with Simac, a good feeling arose. The international character of Simac, coupled with the no-nonsense attitude of a well-run family business, gave us the confidence that this would be the ideal partner for the further growth of the Simac Ladies Tour."

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

  23. Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited: 1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace.
