Is it better to get morning tickets or afternoon tickets?

Morning in my opinion. Better chance of bumping into people there to interview on the Today show. It's how we got to meet Hoda and be on a segment at the end of our tour in September last year.

How long is the tour?

45-60 minutes depending on group queries!

We had a tour this morning and brought 10 students of our Media Literacy program from Love of Learning Montessori school. Molly and Antu were our pages. They were phenomenal!!!! I cannot recommend them or this tour more highly. We all felt that there was just the right amount of historical info, awesome access, and technical understanding. Our pages were knowledgeable, professional, friendly and entertaining. This is a great tour for anyone. In our case these kids are very production savvy and the pages were able to pivot so effortlessly between the varied interests of our students.

Not worth going to the NBC studio tour. Just looking at empty rooms, see some videos, some elevator rides, not allowed to take photos, it's ok if it's free, otherwise, use the money to eat some delicious food at nearby food trucks recommended by yelp, and take some pictures at the Shop. Don't bother going.

It's fine, but I think I expected more polished tour guides, working action, and more content integration. The highlight for me was seeing Studio 8H, and I got the feeling that there is a demand for tours that specialize solely on SNL. As a lifelong superfan, it is a treat to see the stage from the audience, with the musical stage next to the monologue stage, which doubles as weekend update, with two separate set pieces, all under the iconic clock. But it would be nice to get on the floor level, especially through the doors where monologists often stray. I would love to see a llama up close. They should consider such a tour one day a week that includes Wally's cue card team, prop room, costumes, control booth, etc. I would pay big money if such a tour included the dress rehearsal or actual show, rather than relying on standby, a lottery, or giving Andrew Dismukes a "massage". We were there on a Tuesday just before Shane Gillis and 21 Savage shot their promos, but we were ushered out like interlopers instead of being treated as the audience we hoped we could be. The second highlight was the interactive segment, which they only added post-Covid. They gave each member of our group of twelve a role. Some kid who couldn't read the teleprompter was our host (he was no Letter Man). Another kid was his guest. Some lady volunteered me for the "contestant", which I didn't want. (I tried to volunteer here for the janitor.) We also had three people in a "band", one "announcer", and the ugly people worked the cameras and control booth. The whole thing is scripted and videotaped, sent free to the guests, which is a nice touch. The whole thing is well-intentioned though a little hokey- they should have Seth Myers take a look at the script and punch it up. Truth is, except for the last part, I think this would be very boring for a kid unless they are a fan of SNL. Or elevators. The third highlight was entering a newsroom studio, where a girl in charge of audio took the time to point out the director, stagehand, and cameraman prepping the timing of the teleprompter. During that time we saw a screen projecting Biden the winner of the election taking place in nine months and I joked they leaked the script. They laughed and assured me it was practice. If I am found "unresponsive in my cell", please remember this review. The rest is basically three videos about NBC history, a look into mostly empty control rooms beyond a glass window, and hanging out in hallways, hoping to catch a glimpse of Keith Morrison (ok, maybe that was just me). I get that the focus was on NBC history, I would have loved to see more content integration, like chronological or thematic montage videos or props/costumes of popular NBC programming. Even though they weren't filmed there, I want to put on Ross' leather pants, drop a Junior Mint into a patient's body, close Ron Swanson's office door by remote, anything but a beverage with Dr. Huxtable.

It's like that thing where they make you wait in a gift shop full of Golden Girls Monopoly and giant Jimmy Fallon heads.

We stumbled across the NBC Studios Tour by accident as we were walking by. Of course, we decided we had to do it. I've always been a HUGE Saturday Night Live fan and it was pretty amazing to see the actual studio and how small it really was. There are hundreds of lights on the ceiling because apparently it's bad luck to remove the old ones when they stop working. At the end of the tour we got to make our own little show and of course it was very similar to the famous "Cow Bell" sketch. I played the tambourine. It was a fun time. Afterwards we went to the shop and bought some souvenirs. One of them of course, was a "I need more Cowbell" shirt!

A larger lady with reddish hair shuttled my family like they were cattle and told us not to crowd up the line. If we're paying for the tour, then our money pays your salary. Therefore, you should have a better attitude.

Early morning and we just finished the taping of the TODAY show. Not sure if we actually made it on TV, but it was a fun experience making our Aloha signs and cheering on! On Weds, JuIy 3rd, I saw Carson Daly, Craig Melvin, and Sheinelle Jones live in person from the TODAY show window at Rockefeller Center and when they made their way out to do a segment outdoors. During the taping we received a 10% discount coupon for merchandise at the NBC Studios store. At the store is where we learned about The Tour backstage. Since we had extra time to spare, we decided to do it and paid $33 for each ticket. The gal said she was able to squeeze two of us in, otherwise we would've had to come back another day (it was very busy!). The coolest part of the tour was sitting on the second level of the SNL studio (usually only VIPs sit on the ground floor) and standing inside the set of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Since Fallon was on hiatus, we were lucky enough to tour the seating area and see his desk at a Birdseye view. It is said that Fallon wants his visitors to feel like they're VIP so everyone gets to sit in a chair made out of red Ferrari leather! And of course he has the the red carpets rolled out as you enter and walk down the aisle! Unfortunately, photo taking was not allowed during the 1-hour tour. But, at the end, our group participated in an interview segment and NBC emailed a link of the recording to all of us. I took snap shots of the video, so hopefully they will appear in this review. Other fun things about the tour....an "Applause" magnetic button to keep as a souvenir, seeing actual workers in the halls (like make-up artists in action), the Hall of Fame photos along the walls, an ode to The Muppets in Fallon's closet, and listening to the interns (from the NBCUniversal Page Program) talk about the history of the building and cast members - they were our tour guides. Fun things after the tour....browse around the NBC store some more. Check out the NBC mugs, the original news desk, The Voice chair, and merchandise from your favorite tv shows like Friends and Fallon.

After reading some good reviews, I booked this for 3pm in a Sunday. I was disappointed that I did. I travel quite a bit and take many tours so I've done the universal tour, etc. This one doesn't come close. They basically take you to three empty studios where they film talk shows. They all look similar with differently designed walls. You stand at the top and look down at a bunch of chairs and tables covered with sheets and they talk for 5 mins. Did not see any of the actual sitcom or show studios which would have been nice. Then three people in the group record a little talk show. You are not allowed to take any pics along the way. I was bored. Hint: There don't seem to be any broadway shows on Sunday night and Monday's in NYC. So best to take this tour then, and rather go to a 2pm or 3pm broadway show on the Sunday. It will, in my opinion, be a much better way to spend Sunday afternoon in New York.

Jan 13, 2020

Hi Nadia, we're so sorry that The Tour was not what you were expecting! Unfortunately as sitcoms are filmed out in our studios on the West Coast, The Tour here in NYC features our in-house studios for late night shows such as The Tonight Show and SNL. We apologize for any misunderstanding as to what The Tour featured - and we'd love to make things right for you. We are sending you a message now!

My family and I had a really nice time with our Pages at our 10am tour on Sunday the 29th. Because it was a Sunday while shows were on a hiatus, we got to see an "extra" part of the facility besides the Nightly News studio, Saturday Night Live studio, Jimmy Fallon studio, and the hallways and lounges of the beautiful Art Deco building. There are so many photos on all the walls that there's not enough time to really view them. The "making of your own talk show" was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see the video that will be sent via email. Wife played host, kid played guest, and my other kid and I got to be in the house band. Hey, NBC, I'm writing this 12 hours later after our tour and didn't get our video! Our Pages were super helpful and fully answered our questions. They seemed very happy to give the tour and should be given a raise! It's too bad the internship only lasts a year, but maybe someday I'll see one on on TV and I could say I remember when... The tour ends at a gift shop, of course. Pass. Even with the coupon. No pictures allowed. You'll have to pay the $33 each to go for yourself. Or, try to win one of the ticket lotteries to see a taping of Jimmy Fallon or SNL. Pretty cool tour.

Jan 6, 2020

Hi Michael, thank you very much for this in-depth review of The Tour! We're so glad to see you had a great time - however, so sorry that you didn't receive your video! We're sending you a message to get that to you today. Thanks for joining us!

Unfortunately they don't allow cameras in this tour, but I highly recommend it. It was so great! I knew we were going to see a lot behind the scenes stuff but I had no idea we would be seeing the sets to so many iconic shows like SNL. That was so awesome! I loved that they even let us get a taste of what its like to work on a talk show set. We all got parts on the set and they even recorded it and emailed it to all if us on the tour. It comes complete with our names on the credits and all. We even got to keep a cute little magnetic pin to take home. Buy tickets to go to the Top of the Rock too. The view is spectacular!

Dec 23, 2019

Hi Laila - thanks for the wonderful review! We are thrilled to see that you had such a great experience on The Tour and so glad you could join us behind the scenes here at 30 Rock!

In all my visits to NYC here was one place that was right by my hotel and kept missing it! Located in the Rockefeller tower AKA 30 Rock you are given a 1 1/2 guided tour of three sets of your favorite NBC shows broadcast here in NYC. Tickets can be and I recommend purchased online in advance so you can secure your tour time and when you print your ticket you will get a voucher for 10% off in their gift shop. It is noted on your ticket to arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled tour since you will gather about 15 minutes prior. When my son and I arrived (we entered through the gift shop entry) our tickets were scanned and we had some free time to browse for gifts and pose for pictures. Mock up sets of the Today show and the judging chair on the Voice are there for fun shots. The gift shop also holds a lot of nostalgia like the old microphone used in radio days as well as a broadcast camera. Shopping for some of your old and current shows? They have Seinfeld, Friends, the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon, The Today show as well as their logo and stuff from the recently finished Rio games. Photography is not permitted on the tour but you can carry water. After an introductory video we were taken to the third floor to set the set of the Nightly News with Lester Holt. We learned a lot into what goes on making the news and as always don't be fooled by that newsroom reel in the background. It was done in California and run on that traditional "blue screen." Next stop we visited was the set of Saturday Night live. Along the way there are pictures of the old shows as well as the current ones. Located on the 5th and 6th floors, we got to see where the audience gathers preshow and then taken into the studio. Our chairs were old seats from Yankee stadium. Our guides went over the sets how the production is run, the dress rehearsal you can get tickets for as well and how easy it is to transition from one set to another in a few minutes. Our last studio we visited was the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon. We learned about the history of the show. The good luck pole he alway goes by that has remnants of the Muppets on it and then went upstairs to the audience area where we viewed the set. We were told where he does his monologue. The desk and chairs for guests and some of the fun things he does on the show. Now it is our turn. We were taken into a mock set where you can be the host, guest star, announcer, part of the band, the camera man, or the people behind the scenes that do the necessary work to adjust the lighting or sound to make the experience personal. I volunteered to be the host and it was fun seeing how many telepromters they have not only on the camera but also at the desk which was Jimmy Fallon's original desk. We did a 5 minute clip and then they emailed us a copy as a gift. The final segment of the tour shows how they broadcast all over the country even if there are transmission problems in NY. Feel free to ask questions and learn about the history of TV as well as behind the scenes of your favorite shows. A truly not to be missed attraction in NYC. Most definitely will return here. Outstanding tour!

You can now go behind-the-scenes on The Tour at NBC Studios

See what it takes to put on ’SNL’ and late-night TV on this relaunched a 30 Rock tour.

Rossilynne Skena Culgan

Every weekend, Saturday Night Live bursts onto the screen on NBC with sketches that make viewers across the nation laugh, groan, and guffaw. The decades-long comedy institution can feel like something of a mystery, as free tickets are notoriously hard to get.

But now, fans of the show can go behind the scenes of SNL and other beloved programs like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Kelly Clarkson Show  with newly relaunched tours of 30 Rock. The Tour at NBC Studios paused amid the pandemic, but they're now back and revamped for 2024. We took the tour—led by NBC Pages , of course—and found several fascinating secrets to share. But there's lots more to learn on the tour, which is bookable here for $48/person.

1. 30 Rock has a long history in TV

NBC moved into the building in 1933. Just three years later, NBC Radio broadcasted the historic 1936 Berlin Olympics. The Berlin Olympics were the first games to be televised. Over the years, 30 Rock has been home to the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Late Night with Seth Meyers , and more.

Two people host a pretend late-night show.

2. The entire building is TV-ready

Any part of the Art Deco building can be used for television, even a basic staircase which the Jonas Brothers once used for a performance.

3. SNL musicians get to call the shots

Musicians get their own stage during the comedy show, and they get complete creative control to execute their vision. To see it in action, here are NPR's picks for the top musical performances on SNL.

4. They still use physical cue cards

Paper cue cards may seem like a relic of the 1960s, but they're still in use on SNL . Because the sketches have so much movement around the stage, it's easier to move around with paper cue cards than to leave the work to a robot.

Since both Fallon and Meyers are SNL alumni, they got used to physical cue cards and still use those on their late-night shows.

The stage where Late Night with Seth Meyers is filmed.

5. The seconds before SNL starts are pure chaos

There's an old joke about SNL in the industry: "The show doesn’t start because it's ready. It starts because it's 11:30."

Indeed, the NBC Pages explain, even at the 10-second countdown, the team is often still doing make-up and making any final touches before the cameras kick on.

6. SNL 's main stage was inspired by NYC

The set is meant to look like Grand Central Station, even down to a replica of the bustling train station's clock.

7. Some of the equipment dates back decades

Over 700 lights hang in the SNL studio to illuminate the stage—and some of them even date back to the original show. If you get a chance to take the tour (or see SNL !), look for the old NBC logo on some of the lights.

8. They go through a lot of wigs

During a typical Saturday night show, the SNL cast can cycle through 100 wigs per show.

Tour of 30 Rock

Our tour guide, Aaron, is funny and kept things moving at a great pace. We started in the main building, 30 Rock, and ended up walking around the block to view the Today Show Plaza and many Rockefeller Centre buildings. This tour was loaded with interesting historical facts about the family, the buildings and the shows. Studios were super cool to be in and photo lined walls were memory blasts with people like Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, and Steve Martin featured on SNL in the 80s. Although the views from the Top of the Rock were amazing, it was expensive: $30.

We went to the Top of the Rock and then had dinner at the lower level outdoor terrace. I was impressed with how clean and well thought out the entire place is - very friendly staff and great amenities for families as well. Lots of shops underground will keep you busy as well.

We felt a little daft until we were clear in wanting the observation deck, as the Rockerfeller centre is an area not just one building. With plenty of shops and restaurants you could spend hours just in this one section of the city. Going up the observation deck gave us great views from a different vantage point, well worth the visit.

Top of the Rock - recommended to see panorama of NY from two levels. The building is fantastic, the marble everywhere - really big shopping center

Ice skate in the winter. See the Christmas tree in December. Shop underground with rivers of people. Great restaurants and shops. Subway comes right through. Jewelry district adjacent. Take pictures.

this remarkable midtown art deco masterpiece still endures as a not-to-be-missed manhattan attraction.......across the street from st. patrick's, it features a long promenade leading to the famous golden prometheus statue and ice-skating rink......it is the site of the nation's biggest and most beautiful christmas tree during the holiday season

Top of the Rock NYC Observation Deck Complete Guide

The Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center gives visitors the chance to take in some of the best NYC skyline views you can ask for.

Over the course of 3 floors, you will enjoy those views in every which direction. With Central Park to the north and the World Trade Center to the south, there is plenty of iconic scenery everywhere in between.

Read on to learn everything there is to know about the Top of Rock of New York City and what to expect out on a visit.

1) Rockefeller Center Background & Things to Know

While there are several observation decks in NYC, the Top of the Rock is one of the best one to choose from.

Located on top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the Top of the Rock makes up the 67 th , 69 th , & 70 th floors of the building. Throughout these floors you will find both indoor AND outdoor observation deck areas – something that is not offered at all observation decks.

In addition, the Top of the Rock observation deck is the northernmost deck in NYC. That means you will get the grandest view of the NYC skyline looking southbound compared to other decks around Manhattan.

While the Top of the Rock is surely one of the top highlights of the area, Rockefeller Center also offers more than just the observation deck.

Rockefeller Plaza : At the bottom of  the building you will find Rockefeller Plaza. In the wintertime, the famous Rockefeller Tree is located here as well as an ice-skating rink and winter market. In the summer time, the plaza is sometimes converted into a roller skating rink too.

Rock Center Tour : Rockefeller Center is also a place with much history and you have the chance to take a tour to learn all about it . Art, architecture, and points of interest make up the area. You can buy The Rock Pass to combine the tour and the observation deck.

NBC Studios : At Rockefeller Center you will also find the NBC Studios , where you can take part of separate tours and learn more about the history of the studio at Rockefeller Center.

Rainbow Room : In the past, the Rainbow Room and Bar SixtyFive (located on the 65 th floor) were open to the public. As of now, these are only open for private events, but be on the lookout for potential future openings.

While there is a lot to enjoy during a visit to Rockefeller Center, this guide in particular will focus on the Top of the Rock observation deck. I hope by the end of reading through, you will have all the necessary information for a visit.

Rockefeller Center Tree

2) How to Get There

The Top of the Rock is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, which is located between 5 th and 6 th Avenues & 49 th & 50 th Streets. The entrance to the observation deck is on 50 th Street.

My recommendation would be to enter Rockefeller Center from 5 th Avenue, walk along the famous fountains, past the ice skating/roller skating rink and to the main entrance. This will give you the chance to enjoy some of the top points of interest prior to heading up to the top of the building.

You can get to the Top of the Rock by any way of transport including by foot, subway, taxi/Uber, or even Citi Bike.

If coming in by subway, the closest station would be:

  • 47-50 th Streets Rockefeller Center | E, B, D, F, & M
  • 49 th Street & 7 th Avenue | N, Q, R, W
  • 51 st Street & Lexington Avenue | 6

3) Top of the Rock Tickets & Reservations

In order to visit the Top of the Rock observation deck, you must purchase tickets and reserve a certain time slot.

You can either purchase your ticket ahead of time or you can purchase tickets when you arrive. If you would like to remove the hassle of worrying about purchasing tickets on arrival, I would just recommend buying in advance.

This is especially true for those sunset hours, when you will want to guarantee you are up top and ready for sunset.

Inclement Weather : Note that if there is inclement weather, you do have the option to choose a different date/time slot for your visit.

There are a few different types of tickets to choose from including:

  • General Admission : standard ticket giving access to the 3 different floors of observation decks
  • Express Pass : includes an entry ticket with expedited entry & priority elevator access
  • VIP Tour : this will be of a more in depth experience as you get a VIP tour of the top of 30 Rockefeller and a visit to the Rainbow Room
  • Rockefeller Center Tour : mentioned earlier, you can also take part of more general Rockefeller Center tour (does not include admission to the observation deck)
  • Rock Pass : gives you access to the Top of the Rock observation deck & a Rockefeller Center tour
  • New York CityPASS : for $129, you have access to 5 major NYC attractions including the Empire State Building, American Museum of Natural History, Top of the Rock OR Guggenheim Museum, Statue of Liberty Ferry OR Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise, 9/11 Memorial & Museum OR Intrepid Museum. → Buy your CityPASS today

Flexible Ticket: if you purchase a ticket through GetYourGuide , the ticket includes flexible date & entry times

  • Adult : $40
  • Child : $34
  • Senior : $38
  • +10 per ticket for sunset access (starts ~3 hours prior to sunset)
  • Express Pass: $85

  • Rockefeller Center Tour: $27

  • Flexible Date/Entry Ticket : $43.55 all in -> with GetYourGuide

Top of the Rock Night View

5) Top of the Rock Hours

The Top of the Rock observation deck is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year from 9:00AM to 11:00PM, with the last entry at 10:10PM (varying hours during holidays).

When reserving tickets, you can choose entry time slots for every 15 minutes (i.e. 5:00PM, 5:15PM, 5:30PM, 5:45PM, etc.). They didn’t seem to be too strict with these time slots, as I arrived around 20 minutes prior to my time slot and they let me right on up.

If you are visiting for sunset, I would recommend purchasing a time slot around 1.5-2 hours prior to sunset.

This will give you enough time to get through security, through the exhibition, and up the elevators with plenty of time to spare.

Note : the tour options will have specific time slots to book. Once all done with the tours, you will get to visit the observation decks.

6) What is the Best Time to Go

While the observation deck is open from morning until night, in my opinion the best time to go to the Top of the Rock is around sunset (as it is one of the top NYC sunset spots ).

Getting to see the city from an elevated vantage point as the sun sets beyond the horizon is a beautiful site to see. While the weather may not always be perfect for sunset, there is also a chance that the sky turns different shades of red, orange, and yellow.

The main downside for sunset time at Top of the Rock is that it is also the most crowded time to visit.

During my time there, people were already lining up along the railings up to an hour prior to sunset. By the time sunset came around, there were crowds of people lining up.

If you don’t care as much for sunset, the quietest hours of the day will be right at opening time and near closing time. This may even give you the chance to experience the observation deck all by yourself.

7) A Top of the Rock Experience

Now that you have a bit of background about Top of the Rock, lets go through what an experience there is all about.

Entrance & Exhibition

After getting yourself to the entrance on 50th Street, you will enter the building and be welcomed to the famous staircase and chandelier. If you haven’t purchased tickets yet, you will do so prior to making your way up the staircase.

Once up the staircase, your tickets will be checked as you go through security and then onwards to the exhibition room.

Note: if you purchased an Express Pass ticket, you will go straight up on an elevator prior to the exhibition.

Top of the Rock Chandelier

The exhibition room though is full of information boards where you can learn all about the history of the building.

If you were not aware, one of the most famous NYC photographs was taken at the Top of the Rock – Lunch atop a Skyscraper. Here you will be photographed (if you want to be) on a steel beam, and you can purchase the photos later on up top.

After the exhibition room, you will walk through a small cinema, where three different short films are played back to back. You can decide to watch one or all three before heading towards the elevators.

Top of the Rock Exhibit

The elevators have an interactive ceiling as they take you straight up to the 67 th floor.

Top of the Rock Elevator

Observation Decks

There are three observation deck floors at the Top of the Rock – 67 th , 69 th and 70 th . Here you will have both inside and outside views of the NYC skyline. Getting between the floors is done by some quick escalators and stairs, so no need to hop back in an elevator (unless needed).

The 67 th and 69 th floors will offer views with large panes of glass surrounding the exterior of the observation decks. While on the 70 th floor you will find a much more wide-open view with no obstructions.

Below you can see a screenshot of the top of the building and where the 3 outdoor viewing decks are located.

The 67 th floor just has the two eastern corners of the building. The 69 th floor has a larger overall area to walk around the exterior. And the 70 th floor makes up the middle of the building without those glass panes that can be found on the other floors.

Be sure to also check out some of the other top things to do in New York City during a visit!

Top Photography Spot

In my opinion, the top photography spot would be located on the 70 th floor observation deck on the southeast side of the building .

From here you will get sprawling views of the NYC skyline looking southbound and you will not have the 69 th floor deck in the bottom of your photos.

If you head too far west along the 70 th floor deck, you will begin to have the 69 th floor deck creep into your photos. By staying more east, you will have the chance for the most unobstructed views (in my opinion).

Below is a photo of the area in general – getting right up to the edge where most people are standing will give you the top views of city.

Be sure to check out some of the other best photo spots in NYC during a visit to the city!

What Buildings Can You See from Top of the Rock

A better question is what building can’t you see from the Top of the Rock. From the observation decks you will be able to take in views of each and every major landmark NYC skyline building.

These include the Empire State Building , One World Trade Center , the Edge, One Vanderbilt, the Chrysler Building, the Billionaire’s Row high-rises, Times Square, Hudson Yards, and plenty more.

In addition to those buildings, also be on the lookout in the far distance for other highlights such as the Statue of Liberty , Verrazano Bridge, Manhattan Bridge , Brooklyn Bridge , among others.

Here are some up and close photos from many of these top highlights:

The Edge Top of the Rock

Can You See Central Park from Top of the Rock?

In addition to the NYC buildings that can be seen, you can also see Central Park looking northbound. You should be able to see the 843 acres of beautiful greenery along with some of the top water features of the park such as the Central Park Reservoir .

Lining the streets prior to the park, you will have all those Billionaire Row high-rise buildings, that have greatly changed the NYC skyline over the past several years.

Feel free to check out some of the other top Central Park views that can be found nearby .

Top of the Rock Central Park

8) Is It Worth It?

In my opinion, the Top of the Rock is certainly worth the visit. Getting to see the NYC skyline from above is an experience you will never forget.

As mentioned before, the Top of the Rock is the northernmost located observation deck in the city. So, from the top, you truly will get some of the most wholistic New York City views you can ask for.

Although it is not necessarily a cheap activity to take part of, I do believe it is well worth visiting during your time in New York.

I will say though, if you are already planning to visit another observatory, you may find the experience a bit redundant. However, if you are looking for an outdoor, unobstructed NYC observation deck experience, then Top of the Rock is right up there on the list.

Bridge Views from Top of the Rock

9) Which is Better Top of the Rock or Empire State Building

This is one question that comes up often when it comes to NYC observation decks. If you had to choose only one, picking between the Top of the Rock and Empire State Building is no easy decision.

The Top of the Rock does offer some of the best unobstructed views from an observation deck from its 70 th floor. There are no glass panes, fencing, or other obstructions that will get in the way of your views (besides other people).

In addition, since the Top of the Rock is located north of the Empire State Building, you will get some unbelievable views of the ESB itself.

When it comes to the Empire State Building, there are two main observation decks to visit. You have the outdoor deck on the 86 th floor and the indoor observatory from the 102 nd floor.

Both of these decks are obviously higher in elevation than the highest point of the Top of the Rock. So, you will have a higher vantage point of the city.

In addition to that, the Empire State Building is the one observation deck in the city to offer a sunrise experience . While this is only available on Saturday mornings, getting to see the first rays of light over the city is a truly special experience to take part of (see the photo below!).

While there are certainly some things that the ESB offers I will say that from the Empire State Building you will not have that one panorama photo that includes most of the NYC skyline. And of course, you won’t have the chance to take a photo of the ESB itself.

In addition, the outdoor observation deck at the Empire State Building does have a fencing that goes around, so you will need to sneak your camera or phone between the openings to get the shots you want.

I have a hard time believing you will go wrong here as both observation decks are truly beautiful experiences to take part of.

10) Frequently Asked Questions

To wrap up the article, I did want to just answer some of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to the Top of the Rock.

Can You Bring Food to Top of the Rock?

According to the Top of the Rock, food is not allowed. However, I have a hard time believing they will stop you if you bring a small snack in your bag. Water is also permitted, so no worries about that.

Can I Bring a Bag to Top of the Rock?

Yes, you are allowed to bring a bag to the Top of the Rock. The only prohibited items are those that present a danger to visitors. These include weapons, knives, lighters, glass bottles, and flammable substances.

In addition, you cannot bring musical instruments, amplifiers, and speakers.

How Long Are You Allowed at Top of the Rock?

While you do have to book a certain entrance time slot, there are no limitations on the amount of time you are allowed at the Top of the Rock. You can literally spend the entire day there if you would like.

With that said, I would imagine for most people, around 1-1.5 hours is enough for a visit.

How Many Floors Does Top of the Rock Have?

There are three main floors at the Top of the Rock observation deck – 67 th , 69 th , and 70 th . Connecting the 67 th and 69 th floors you will find an escalator. Between the 69 th and 70 th floors will be a staircase.

Is Top of the Rock Indoor or Outdoor?

You will find BOTH indoor and outdoor viewing areas at the Top of the Rock. So, if you want to spend some time inside (if it is too hot or cold outside), then you can still enjoy some views within the building.

If you want those more unobstructed views, then there is plenty of outdoor viewing areas to take advantage of during a visit.

What Do You Do at Top of the Rock?

Beyond walking through the exhibit on the second floor, the main attraction at the Top of the Rock is to enjoy the vast views of the NYC skyline .

While most of your time in NYC will be spent at ground level, an experience at the Top of the Rock will give you the chance to enjoy those panorama views from high above.

Spend time marveling at the skyscrapers, Central Park, the Hudson River & East River , and everything else that surrounds this magnificent city.
