International hospitality and tourism management personal statement example.

My interest in the inner workings of the tourism industry began when my father introduced me to the process of organizing our family holiday at a very young age. As a result of this, I completed an internship at a local musical agency where I got the first glance at different organizational tasks around hotel bookings as well as marketing.

I have become particularly interested in combining creativity with management and organization. I searched for ways in which I could introduce myself to the industry and first chose the course of International Business & Economic Studies at my current institution. Especially interesting to me were the concepts of multinational companies, financing and investment but also strategic planning. I am eager to learn about the intricacies of contemporary economies and the ways in which they affect different countries, as well as getting an insight into the way corporations operate. Furthermore, I developed an interest in the practice of negotiation and realized the importance of adequate cultural awareness.

My introduction to the financial aspects of a business and theoretical market situations while using different models in school encouraged me to pursue a six-week work placement in a London-based travel agency. During my time there, I was given tasks in various departments such as Accounting, Sales, Administration and Marketing. Over the course of my internship, Destination Management was of particular interest to me because it focuses on the diversity of existing and potential tourism resources.

As an assistant, I analyzed competitors' prices and updated information on the agency's internal system and assisted with clients' inquiries. I remained consistently eager to learn more and deal with new challenges. I am proud to say that I financed my internship in its entirety, including my accommodation. This added responsibility helped a great deal in developing my professional confidence and fueled my personal independence.

Following my time in the workplace, I know that I would love to have the chance to study concepts of hospitality and tourism, and would flourish given the opportunity to put these theoretical frameworks into practice. With the expanded specialized insight that this study would provide, I am hoping to focus on the field of sustainable tourism as my eventual specialization.

I am immensely dedicated when it comes to aspects that I am passionate about, including choosing a school that is further away in order to study an international course. I have no doubt that I will enjoy this course because I am highly interested in what I am already focusing on in my secondary education, and I am keen on working in an international environment which would foster and develop my existing organizational skill.

I have become involved in a project at my current school invested in contextualizing my own environment. The work involves installing stone memorials - “Stolpersteine” - dedicated to the Jewish families who were seized during the rise of National Socialism in Freiburg. I am a passionate reader, particularly interested in poetry and non-fiction texts in both English and German.

I take advantage of opportunities to exercise my own creative instinct through writing and showcasing my own poetry and guitar composition. I am also continuously committed to exploring visual art and museum culture, predominantly contemporary photography. I have been an avid skateboarder for some time and am looking forward to integrating myself in the skateboarding scene of a new city.

As a foreign student, I have proven my adaptability and keen interest in international travel and study, both to myself and others. Consequently, I believe that my outside perspective and efforts to support and engage with new environments would yield positive and constructive contributions to the university’s community.

Instead of the usual good experiences and deep-rooted interests that lead many students to follow a certain academic path, a number of bad, sometimes terrible experiences have led me to want to follow a career in hospitality.

As a member of a successful school and college orchestra, I had the good fortune to travel around the UK and Europe, taking part in competitions and concerts. These often required overnight stays in hotels, and long hours spent in concert halls and theatres. Sadly, I can count the number of excellent experiences on one hand, whereas the bad experiences are numerous. It was these experiences that first ignited my interest in the hospitality and tourism industry, and this interest was further enhanced by the subsequent courses I took at college.

I could see how the little things made a big difference, and how good hospitality relied on good management, budgeting and service. To me, hospitality is not just serving breakfast on time, or accommodating requests from customers at the drop of a hat. It is about managing and training staff, ensuring the budget is spent in the right places and minimising the potential for mistakes. These are key factors to running a successful hospitality business in this ever-growing industry.

My part-time job at a local hotel and restaurant further reinforced this belief. I took on many roles, including cleaning, waitressing and helping out on reception, and this enabled me to see how the business worked from a number of angles. I found a major problem to be that senior staff were not aware of the academic and business side to hospitality, and this in turn led to inadequate service. Simple things like ensuring enough staff were available to cover demand for services (for example, bar tending or waitressing) or ensuring training was provided and encouraged for staff to grow and develop seemed to fall by the wayside on occasion. I have already deduced that this is not acceptable when trying to run a successful hospitality business, but I want to go further and learn how to rectify issues like these, and studying hospitality will help me to discover that.

I have been able to secure holiday employment at this hotel and restaurant, and hope to put what I learn at university into action during these periods. I also believe this will aid my learning, as I will be able to see and experience what I am studying, and use this to enhance my work at university.

I would like to pursue a career in hotel management, and my dream is to eventually own my own hotel. While this may seem a pipe dream, it is one I will continue to aim for, hopefully bolstered by a degree in this subject.

I have noticed that tourism and hospitality are closely-related areas of an economic and social phenomenon that have developed a critical role in the world economy. The industry has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries with economic and employment benefits. The profession is not only profit oriented but also interesting and full of colourful funs and challenges. I am highly impressed with the growth of the industry and the prospects of careers development in the sector – a master degree in International Tourism and Hospitality Management can prepare me for this.

I think, from the course, I will develop a critical capacity for understanding knowledge and being able to act upon it, and I will develop the positive and proactive attitudes of management that are necessary in the international tourism and hospitality industry. In fact this course emphasises the development and enhancement of transferable intellectual and study skills that are highly relevant to contemporary business and management careers in this booming industry.

From the course, I expect to learn in-depth knowledge of modern approaches to Tourism and Hospitality business and management, an understanding of the relationship between people & Tourist, organisations, and business and management in different organisational structures, published modern financial techniques,  an understanding of the central importance of innovation in a range of different Tourism and Hospitality organisational contexts – entrepreneurial start-up firms, large business corporations, an understanding of the broader social context of the Tourism and Hospitality world, and the opportunity to assess my own personal development needs to help me focus my career in the Tourism and Hospitality field.

Prior to my current visa, I studied a general MBA - this study has enabled me gaining typical knowledge in general business administration. These were purely theoretical common knowledge combining bit of everything. Today’s businesses are more tailored and personalised. Managers in the ever competitive global arena are now specialising in different segments of industry and then within functional areas of organisations and departments. General MBA occasionally does not attract head-hunters attentions. I have felt this every moment of my PSW visa while looking to build a career and ended up realising that I must gain expertise in area that has individual identity rather than a generic name, and after thorough research I have found Tourism and Hospitality Management is the area where my heart responds and mind concentrates to match my academic tastes.

To me studying tourism & hospitality is about trying to understand the problems and opportunities raised by developing and operating a major sector of the economy that has major effects on the destinations themselves. The philosophy underlying the Tourism and Hospitality Scheme is that of the contextualised management degree. These contextual matters primarily include strategic tourism and hospitality management, international marketing, human resource management, financial management for the hospitality industry, social issues, political issues, environmental issues, global issues, and a range of specialist areas of interest to the sector (sport, event management, environment and hotel management).

In this MSc at the University of Bedfordshire, I will be expected to be able to read about, understand, and articulate a very wide range of academic and industry sources, case studies and resources. In the University of Bedfordshire This MSc is one of the most robust, challenging, relevant and industry-focused of its kind in the UK. And this marks the difference between my MBA and this MSc – the MSc would equip me with applied and technical knowledge along with vocational skills and professionalism. This would develop and enhance my ability and skills while earn significant progressions in knowledge and potential successful career.

It is not hard to see that my past studies in the areas of business and management including my MBA would have positive and close impact and effects to complement knowledge of the this MSc programme. Due to the similarities of the business and management part of this MSc with my previous studies, in particular the most recently completed MBA, I will have the advantages to transferring the related part of the knowledge to strengthen the understanding and performance. I aim to introduce new dimension in the class and contribute extra towards the research and practical attachment part of the course.

Hospitality is one of the fastest-growing, job-creating sectors in my home country, India and abroad, offering the opportunity of careers with rapid progression at management level in hotels, restaurants, pubs, clubs, bars, contract catering, hospitality services within other organisations or self-employed. The hospitality business is a worldwide industry, with many different working environments. There’s enormous scope for travel – from working at a ski resort in Canada to cruising in the Caribbean.

On the other hand, Tourism provides a wide range of job opportunities, including: tourism marketing officer; tour leader/trek leader; travel consultant; travel agency manager; tour operator resort representative; tour operator product manager; tour operator contracts manager; tour operator product development co-ordinator; tourist information centre manager; events manager or sales executive; attractions sales and marketing administrator; public relations officer; hotel marketing executive; arts administrator; conference organiser; lifestyle consultant; magazine journalist; FE college lecturer; catering manager; retail manager; Human Resources/Training officer; passenger service agents; airline and airport management; ferry or cruise manager and many others.

Therefore, there would a whole range of career opportunities for me once I qualify with this life-changing course that offers practical life-skills for the industry along with industry related contemporary knowledge. I do not see a better place to study this course other than University of Bedfordshire that are so down to the industry and demands of the sector.

Globalisation has exposed hospitality to be more than just an industry but equally a business concept. Businesses are now realising that they do not necessarily have to be playing in the hospitality industry for them to integrate the concept of hospitality into their service offerings. In my over 6 years of working in the hospitality industry, I have carefully studied   innovative ways to exceed customer expectations, which in my opinion will always be a core aspect of business that other industries will always look up to the hospitality and tourism industry to replicate their efforts.

To say that I have enjoyed my experience working in this industry will be an understatement, the experience, exposure, network, and growth opportunities is second to none, and I am committed to building a successful career in this industry. I began my career in the hospitality industry as a Housekeeping Self-Checker for xxx in xxx and have successfully worked my way up the corporate ladder. However, my growth has been stunted due to my lack of a corresponding academic degree in hospitality management. I have had to watch my colleagues with similar experiences advance past me in the workplace due to their academic degrees, so I am committed to giving myself an improved chance for growth through this degree. My first degree was in xxx (bachelor’s degree), and the learning experience helped me to build the skills and general business knowledge that made my initial transition into hospitality easy. Skills like accounting, reporting, critical thinking, continual learning, organising, interpersonal communication, team collaboration, and adaptability which I developed during my undergraduate study all played key roles in my transition into the hospitality industry. Thus far, I have gained exposure to important responsibilities and roles in the hospitality sector including housekeeping department, purchasing and receiving department and in-room dining, and I am interested in back-up my experience with an academic study to give me better opportunities in the corporate world.

After going through the outline for this program; including the modules, fees, facilities, and faculty staff, and seeing how Robert Gordon University balances tourism and hospitality studies into one program, I have concluded that studying here will be a wise decision for me. My decision to follow a career in hospitality management has been prompted by work experience that I undertook during the last two summer holidays. I was initially undecided about my career choices and took the job, as an assistant to an entertainment manager on a cruise ship, to earn some extra cash.

I realised how lucky I was to have such an opportunity and to sail around the Mediterranean for 6 weeks, getting paid but I did not expect to enjoy it so much. The work was hard but the difference between this and the 9-5 Saturday job I have also done in retail could not be more marked. I was outside for much of the day, able to enjoy the sunshine and my work was all done with the intention of giving the people on the cruise their holiday of a lifetime.

Although some of the tasks were quite menial, being able to help put on competitions, run the children’s club and participate in the evening events was fantastic. Playing with the children and mixing with the guests at the dinner dances could not be described as work! I worked closely with the manager and was impressed at his ability to work long hours but still remain cheerful with his staff and the guests at all times. This rubbed off on me and I was surprised at how being enthusiastic and helpful was very satisfying, particularly when people made it obvious that they appreciated what I was doing.

After my first summer on the ship, I was eager to sign up for another and was pleased that they wanted me back. When I got home I started my college course doing A-levels in English, French and Business Studies and started to research university courses that would enable me to pursue a career in hospitality management. Working towards this well-defined goal has motivated me in my studies and I have obtained B grades in all three subjects in my AS levels. My immediate aim is to push at least two of these grades up to n ‘A’  in my A2 exams.

The subjects I chose to study were chosen based on my interest and aptitude and all are highly relevant to a degree in hospitality management. I have become much more fluent and confident in French as my work experience brought me into contact with French guests on the ship who were happy to let me practise. I realise the value of languages in the industry and have started an evening class to learn Spanish. Improving my cooking and presentation skills is also very important and I have combined this with helping my mother to run a cooking and baking skills class for teenage mothers in my local area. Next summer I have lined up an 8-week work placement with another cruise ship and this time I will be a catering assistant, so that will be a big challenge.

I feel that I have the motivation, academic and practical skills to gain a good degree in hospitality management and to then take up a career in the industry. My ambition is to own a hotel one day, or perhaps run my own cruises with a fleet of cruise ships.

I have always been passionate about building a career in Hospitality and Tourism Management and have worked hard to ensure that I gain the necessary knowledge and experience through both work and study. I find nothing more rewarding than playing a key role in such a customer-focused industry and am continually motivated by the visible enjoyment that I have seen in my clients, not to mention my colleagues, when skill and teamwork have combined to create a truly memorable experience.

I have already demonstrated commitment and flair throughout the study of various aspects of Hospitality and Management. Beginning in food and beverage preparation, I studied at the Chef D’Oeuvre Culinary Institute, where I not only covered all technical aspects of food preparation and service but also discovered my interest in the management and business related aspects of the industry. This intense interest, coupled with hard work and dedication, led to me completing my final course in record time and with the highest marks ever awarded by the institute. As I have taken this knowledge into full time work, however, I have seen how it is always possible to continue developing as both a student and as a professional and have undertaken a Diploma in Hospitality Management from the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute. I would relish the opportunity to develop this knowledge of the industry through study associated with such prestigious institution.

My academic interests in the Hospitality and Tourism Management have grown out of an extensive career portfolio in the field. As I have progressed from a chef-based role to a working in a management consultancy capacity, I have consistently recognised the need to develop my knowledge of management procedures and structures. In my current role, as Food and Beverage Director, I am responsible for planning and implementing all elements of food and beverage service operations at a range of venues. From creating management systems and concepts for dcor and menus to personnel hiring, training and development, this role has obviously seen me move away from a customer service and food preparation role and requires a greater overview of projects. That my career has steadily developed in this direction, as have my studies, is really down to the fact that I like to organise and to provide leadership to ensure a high standard of service. Having been in the industry, at all levels, for over 10 years, I have always strived for excellence and have expected the same dedication from my colleagues. Complimenting this practical experience with academic knowledge of management processes has really helped me to continue striving towards this ultimate goal and I am keen to learn as much as possible that will enable me to get the best out of both myself and my colleagues.

In my spare time, my extroverted, friendly nature and love for interacting with people from all walks of life means I have a range of hobbies. I am a keen sportsperson, enjoying all forms of watersports including sailing and swimming. I am also a keen traveller and enjoy seeing my chosen industry from the other side and gaining ideas from places I visit about how thing may be done differently.

Having worked hard to gain a great deal of experience and knowledge within the Hospitality industry, I am still not content to stand still and stop developing professionally. I am the sort of person who always seeks out a way to refine and to better operational and personnel procedures, which is why I have gravitated to a consultancy role. By studying such a prestigious, far-reaching and impressive course I will be able continue working to an even higher level in the future.

India's Mahindra Holidays Q4 profit jumps on higher occupancy, membership growth

A surge in tourism has enabled hospitality companies, including Mahindra Holidays, to rebound strongly after COVID-19.

Mahindra Holidays is known for its premier resorts brand 'Club Mahindra' and has 110 resorts in India and overseas. Its unit in Europe has 33 vacation properties across Finland, Sweden and Spain.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of 823.6 million rupees ($9.88 million) for the quarter ending March 31, against 564.2 million rupees a year ago.

Its revenue rose nearly 13% to 8 billion rupees, while total expenses rose 9.5%.

During the fourth quarter, resort occupancies reached 87.3%, up from 85% the previous year, while the value of membership sales increased 18% year-on-year.

The company expanded its portfolio with resorts in domestic locations like Sikkim and Assam, and international ones such as Turkey, Kenya, Thailand and Georgia.

The company reported an 18% rise in its quarterly upgrades, reflecting customers' decisions to upgrade their memberships, to 660 million rupees.

Shares of Mahindra Holidays rose 1.5% on Friday ahead of the results.

MOSCOW HOTELS TRY TO ADD STARS TO THEMSELVES

In 2018, Russia will host the FIFA World Cup and thus measures are taken to manage the influx of tourists, such as the rating and classification of hotels. Moscow will be the main city of the football feast from June 14 to July 15, 2018. Recently, many Moscow hotels seemed to have improved their star ratings.

The Luzhniki and Spartak stadiums in Moscow will be the main venues for the FIFA Cup. Thus, preparations are in progress in the city, with some complications already arising. Since the beginning of the year about 100 Moscow hotels have been caught improving their category (star rating) in online booking systems.

The hotel management department of the Sports and Tourism Department is checking the numbers of stars that hotels indicate on the internet. They then compare it to the real category obtained through state classification. As of now, most Moscow hotels have corrected information about their facilities. Others, who have not yet done so, are in the process.

According to the head of the Department of Sport and Tourism of Moscow, Nikolai Gulyaev, a total of more than a thousand hotels and hostels in Moscow have been monitored. Monitoring continues and is maintained on a daily basis. Specialists review booking sites such as booking.com, hrs.com, travel.ru etc.

“Booking sites are in fact a giant live message board. The information there is updated regularly. Every day our staff checks several dozens of hotels that publish information about themselves in the reservation systems,” Gulyaev said.

Most often hotels without stars overstate their category. The Minister said that most hotels do this unintentionally. Typically, these violations occur when hotels did not have time to change the star rating after classification on the booking site. Receptionists correct their mistakes shortly after a written request or a call from the staff of the Department arrives.

“If the hotel refuses to voluntarily correct inaccurate data on the Internet, information about such hotels will be transferred to the Office of the Federal Antimonopoly Service in Moscow. Hotels overstating their category on booking sites violate federal law “On Protection of Competition”. But so far there has been no such case,” Gulyaev added.

To date, the classification took place in 1020 of the Moscow hotels. 30 of these are five star hotels, 80 four-star, 209 hotels are three-star facilities, 109 two-star and 41 are one-star hotels. The category “no stars” was assigned to 551 hotels. Since January 1 of this year, hotels that have not passed the classification are subject to administrative responsibility.

Classification is needed to provide reliable information to the buyer of the service he gets. If the hotel does not quite live up to the stated star, it is assigned to a lower category. Hotels are obliged to confirm their status every three years.
