Heaven sent angel

I was trying to find what felt imposible multi city flights for my family and I and after hrs an hrs online I decided to give Kayak customer service a call and I honestly believe Jonas. R was heaven sent. She went above and beyond in helping me. I’ve never experience this level of customer service with any travel agent. I felt she really cared and wanted to help. She truly exceeded my expectations with finding the perfect flights for us and also with her level of customer service. She deserved a pay rise, a bonus and promotion because she literally made me never want to book anything with anyone else but her. Thank you Jonás!!

Booked a rental car thru kayak

Booked a rental car thru kayak, I always make sure to buy insurance on anything I do. Not only the insurance was not added to book, but now I'm dealing with paying for a flat tire after returning the vehicle.

Do not use Kayak or Kiwi. It’s a scam!

Very very poor service. Had a very bad experience with Kayak.com. The instructions were not very clear. I was told at Heathrow in London that I need a transit visa to board my onward flight to India and this was not made very clear at the time of the booking I’ve came across passengers sent back from Abu Dhabi to London because they did not have a transit visa. I had to buy another ticket from Abu Dhabi to India. Poor service. No one to talk to at the time of booking. Only interested in selling you add ons and all that information is very clear. I am reporting them to trading standards.

I have NEVER had a problem booking a…

I have NEVER had a problem booking a flight thru kayak . I just booked a flight thru you on Cheapo Air . My trip to Cancun was Volaris /Cancun . The problem started before my flight to Cancun . I could not check in online as I didn’t receive my email until midnight before my flight . Because CVG didn’t have a Volaris counter I went to Frontier and was able to check in . Return trip was not so easy . I don’t speak Mexican so I could not check in at 3:00am when I got my email . Volaris is at terminal 2 in Cancun . Frontier is a $30 taxi ride from terminal 2 to terminal 4 where Frontier is . Thank god I gave myself 4 hours to check in at the airport . I was not the only one with this problem as another couple from Cincinnati had the same problem . We talked about this on the plane . They too were worried they would miss their flight . Nobody from Cheapo Air could tell us which terminal to go to ? Volaris is what was suggested but they didn’t know . Kayak is better than this . I’m a veteran traveler and never had a worse problem in all of my travels . I will continue to use kayak but refuse to ever use Cheapo Air agsin . Take them off of your website.

Rented a car through Kayak The rental …

Rented a car through Kayak The rental company was Right Car Rental Right Car Rental Worst car rental experience in 40 years. Waited an hour for pick up. Got to the car rental location. There are no people there., You have to go in a little building and talk to an agent on the screen. I rented the car through Kayak. The total was $224 which was a good deal. My paperwork said amount due at pick up $0. But when I got there the agent forced me to take additional insurance at $24.95 per day. She forced me to sign up for their toll packaged $9.95 per day and then downgraded my rental. My contract clearly stated Nissan Altima or similar vehicle. I ended up with a Kia Soul. I mentioned this to her and she said that's what I rented. My paperwork said Altima and showed a picture of an Altima. When I got my final paperwork after returning the car, they added another surprise on the bill, $13.95 per day senior fee. So my $224 car rental ended up costing $567. I would have rented from Avis for $350. In addition, you have to take 12 pictures of the car when you pick it up and another 12 when you return it. There are no employees on site to talk to. ( At least none visible) If I could rate it a minus 10, I would do so. This review is looking pretty epic! Nice!

ONLY BECAUSE ZERO WAS NOT AN OPTION

Last night I made flight reservations and paid for them through the Kayak site. This morning (less than 12 hours after I made reservations) I learned the funeral date had been changed, so I needed to cancel and change the reservation. I tried calling but the system did not recognize my phone number or email so the automated system would not let me proceed. I tried the site and was finally able to open a chat. The rep could not find any record of my transaction (from the previous evening) and said they were just a contractor and I would need to call Alaska Airline direct. They gave me a phone number that was completely bogus -1-800-100-1051 - no such service number. I finally looked up the phone number, contacted the airline directly, and they were able to cancel reservation with no problem. Kayak is a waste of time (well over an hour to be exact) and a source of much aggravation. Do not make reservations through them. Zero stars was not an option.

KAYAK IS A SCAM

Kayak would put some really cheap flight information to lure you to their websites. But when you try to book these flights, it will tell you that "Something went wrong." and give you something much higher than their original price. Carefully read your flight details before booking!

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

Due to fly in 5 days and they've taken us off the BA flights without our permission or knowledge. That's 7 of us without flights to or back from UK to Orlando, trip off a lifetime ruined. Kayak are telling me a pack of lies over the last 7 days, countless phone calls and emails, but as yet they have NOT resolved it and I'm not convinced they will :-(

Not only no, but heck no!

I'm voting heck no because their advertaising method is darn right predatory. The links are very misleading. Just when you think you've made progress, there's yet another referal where you have to profile your request all over again. If someone searches for Hampton Inn, let them go to Hampton Inn without pretending via false link that you are what you aren't.

I'm extremely pleased with Kayak

I'm extremely pleased with Kayak. Besides for the stupid ads they occasionally try to serve, they are the cleanest, most straightforward platform for analyzing flight prices.

Don't use KAYAK

Kayak would put some really cheap flight information to lure you to their websites. But when you try to book these flights, it will tell you that "Something went wrong." and give you something much higher than their original price. Also be very alert, Kayak hides flight information. You will arrive at one airport in Tokyo, and you will depart from another airport in Tokyo. CAREFULLY read the flight details before you book.

This company is just a scam

This company is just a scam! They were showing the price in EUR and then charged me in USD without prior notice nor my consent. I ended up paying more for this ticket because of that false information and the company rejects to refund me this price difference and extra charges. Will never use it again.

Buzz is the best, incredibly helpful!

The airline had cancelled my original connecting flight and I had called to reschedule but my new ticket was processing for over 2 weeks. I called back yesterday and was connected to Buzz and he was able to resolve my issue and confirm my new ticket in less than 24 hours. I am now confirmed to go see my family for the holidays and I cannot thank Buzz enough!!!

Thyme was very helpful

Thyme was very helpful, patient and thorough in helping me find and book exactly what I wanted. She seemed to have excellent command of the software she was using and found what I asked for right away without ani miscommunication or mistakes. She answered all my questions about travel insurance etc and made the process go quickly, without missing any details.

Probably one of the most useful…

Probably one of the most useful features of Kayak is explore. This is a useful device when looking for EF or just some bargains. Kayak - unlike GF - shows prices for (all?) Asian LCCs, and also has a very good car rental search. Yesterday, thanks to Kayak, I saved 25e on renting a car in April (Keddy by Europcar was shown, while Argus and AutoEurope were not). I agree that OJ, DOJ and more complicated Kayak routes work poorly, and often not at all.

After 20 years using it, i still recommand

Globally after almost 20 years traveling buying flight with kayak, i still did not find better. the optin +-3 days is magic, and the price i see at the beginning, is the price i pay at the end. And yes i tried skyscanner, googleflight, kiwi.....

Pointless site, better off going direct to airlines.

Pointless site. Enter all your information for DIRECT flights only and all you get is flights with 2 or 3 stops taking twice as long as any other airline. Clicked for premium economy and all the results came back as standard economy with extra charges for seat selection, luggage etc. My advice is don’t waste your time with this site and just book direct with a reputable airline.

Airlines cancelled an international…

Airlines cancelled an international flight. I got no notification from Kayak about cancellation. I only knew about it when I went to airlines website to pick a seat. It was panic mode. Getting to a Chat deal representative was a nightmare. The phone systems sent me in a loop and online chat was robotic and useless. No one got back to me even after days of trying. But once I got to a human, Felipe was the representative and he was fantastic. He fixed the errors, found alternative flight and rebooked everything and called back to confirm that I got the new email and the seats I want.

Kayak is one of the many websites out there to help you find the best travel deals.

However, unlike other popular OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) that Kayak often gets lumped in with, Kayak is not an OTA — it’s a metasearch engine for travel deals.

Kayak shows you prices from other websites and will send you to that website to complete your booking.

Plus, with tools like Flight Tracker, Guides, and Kayak Trips, this site acts as an assistant travel planner. You can research and organize all aspects of your trip in 1 spot. That all sounds great, right? But how do you actually use Kayak!?

Overall, searching for travel on Kayak is easy as long as you know a few simple tips and tricks to find the best deals.

This guide will show you everything you need to know to use Kayak to search for and book your next trip.

Kayak Flights

On the home page, Kayak shows your “Recommendations” and routes to “Popular Destinations” based on your home city all before beginning your first search.

These sections are for very specific flights and dates, so they might not be much help if you’re looking for a certain itinerary. However, if you are flexible, these sections offer some great deals!

For example, I found flights for as little as $79 round-trip from my home airport to popular destinations like Orlando and Myrtle Beach. I also found a round-trip from my home airport to Dublin, Ireland for only $648!

Many of these deals are for flights as close in as 2 weeks, so if you’re looking for a last-minute travel deal, Kayak is a great place to start your search.

Hot Tip: You can change the origin city for your Recommended flights and Popular Destinations by doing a flight search with the new city as the origin.

To start your search on Kayak, input your departure city, arrival city, and dates; then hit “Search” just as you would on any other website. This will take you to the next page, which shows a list of available flights. This is the main booking page and it includes a wealth of information.

By default, the results will automatically populate sorted by “Recommended.” You can adjust this setting to sort by Cheapest, Quickest, Earliest Takeoff, Latest Takeoff, Earliest Landing, or Latest Landing. To do this just select how you want to sort using the drop-down on the upper right-hand side of the screen under the main search bar.

This is a great feature that lets you include any baggage fees in the price you’re seeing. Since baggage fees can vary between airlines, this is a great way to see an actual cost comparison without having to search separately for each airline’s baggage fee policy.

Right underneath the Fee Assistant is a large box with a featured flight in it. Keep in mind that this is a sponsored ad, meaning the featured airline paid to be there. While this doesn’t automatically mean the featured deal is bad, it’s smart to keep in mind that it’s not featured simply because it’s a good deal!

This little box at the top left of your screen gives you Kayak’s best estimation of how prices might change in the next week. The box will tell you if it’s a good time to buy, or whether you should wait. This estimation is only for the following week, so I recommend taking their advice with a grain of salt.

If you toggle “Track Prices” to ON, you can create a custom price alert for your itinerary . This requires an email address and automatically sets up an account for you with Kayak.

Kayak's Flight Predictor

Under the “Our Advice” box on the left side of your screen, you can go into lots of detail about your flight preferences. Customize your list of available flights using any of the following filter options:

  • Number of Stops
  • Booking Sites
  • Flight Quality
  • Layover Airports

Narrow flight search results on Kayak

On the right-hand side of your screen, you’ll see this box where you can compare what you find on Kayak to numerous online travel agencies and travel websites.

Clicking on the “Compare” button will take you directly to the chosen website and automatically search your itinerary.

The main middle section of the page is where you’ll find available flights for your chosen route. Click on “View Deal” to see more information about the flights and complete your purchase.

Depending on the route you’re choosing, the View Deal button will take you to either the airline’s website, Kayak’s booking tool, or another OTA such as Expedia or Orbitz to complete your purchase. You will be able to see where the booking is from right above the orange button.

On some flights, there is more than one booking option, but thankfully Kayak features the lowest price option first. To view other options for your chosen flight, click on the down arrow next to the orange View Deal button. This will display a drop-down box of all the prices on different websites.  Please note that this is not available on all flights.

Bottom Line: Kayak is not an online travel agency — it’s a travel search engine.

On some flights, instead of seeing the airline displayed under the price, you will see “Hacker Fare.” Don’t worry — nothing is being hacked and these prices are totally on the up and up!

All this means is that Kayak found a good deal on a flight by bundling 2 one-way tickets (usually on different airlines) instead of a round-trip on 1 airline. This can be a great way to get the best deals.

Kayak Hacker Fare

The only thing to keep in mind with these Hacker Fares is that you have a little less protection if something goes wrong.

Let’s say you’re going to Chicago for a long weekend, but bad weather cancels your outbound flight. Since it was a short trip, you just decide to cancel the whole thing. If you had a round-trip ticket, you’d have much more leverage to get a refund for the second leg of your trip.

But since you booked a Hacker Fare, your return flight is a one-way on a different airline, meaning that return flight has no real relationship to your outbound flight. It would be hard to get a refund for the second leg of your trip; as far as the airline is concerned, this is stand-alone flight. While this is a fairly rare situation, it’s good to be aware of if you purchase a Hacker Fare flight.

Another way to search for flights on Kayak is at the bottom of the home page, where you’ll see a number of popular cities. Click on “Flights” directly under the city name to bring up a page that shows lots of flight deals from your home airport to your chosen destination. These are all for specific dates, so again flexibility is the key to making this tool work for you.

Search for cheap flights on Kayak by destination.

This is a cool feature that is a little hard to find. On the top menu, click on the drop-down box from the “More” tab, and then click on Explore.

Using this tool, you can select your home airport, date range, price range, and trip duration to see where you can fly within those parameters. It’s a fun way to choose a destination when you have an idea of when you might like to travel but aren’t sure where you want to go.

If you hover over the price box on the map, you can see what city the flight arrives in. Once you’ve found your destination, click on the city name, then click on “Find Flights” on the right side to choose your flights and complete the booking.

You can also use the Kayak Explore tool to search for a themed trip, such as Amazing Beaches, Family Friendly Cities, UNESCO Sites, or Hiking Hot Spots. After choosing your home airport, dates, price range, and travel time, choose your travel theme on the right side of the page. This will narrow your search to only destinations featuring the theme you chose.

Kayak Explore

Sometimes having a day or 2 of wiggle room in your travel plans can save you big bucks! Using the 3-day flex search tool, you can see your selected travel dates plus or minus 3 days. This is a great way to see if you can save some money with a little flexibility.

To use this feature, select “Flexible Dates +/-” on the left side of the calendar drop-down box. You can also choose a Flexible Weekend or Flexible Month search. Now when you click on the Search button, you’ll see a chart of prices so you can easily see the cheapest days to fly to your chosen destination.

Hot Tip: Even a day or 2 of flexibility can lead to big savings! Be sure to search for your trip with flexible dates to see your best options.

This is a cool page under the “More” drop-down on the main menu. Click here to see all the places you can fly directly from your home airport. This tool also displays the approximate flight time, distance, and airlines that fly the specific route. It’s a pretty neat tool to check out if you’re looking for a destination you can fly to without a layover.

Occasionally it will appear that the flight you chose is bookable through Kayak ; this will show up as a Kayak price. However, while it looks like you’re booking through Kayak, you are really only using Kayak as a user interface — the booking is actually through a third party (usually an online travel agency like Travelocity or Priceline ).

This is important to know: if you have any problems, you will need to contact the party through which you booked, not Kayak. In this case, the ticket was booked through Priceline even though the user didn’t click through to that website.

Booking Flights On Kayak

Kayak Hotels

Searching for a great hotel on KAYAK is really simple. First, choose “Hotels” from the top menu. Then input the number of rooms, number of guests, city, and dates you’re looking for — click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

On the left side of the page, you’ll see all the options to filter your search. You can narrow your results by stars, review score, price, freebies, location, neighborhood, amenities, ambiance, and property type.

Right above all of the search options is a box to click through to a map, which shows your chosen city with all the hotels marked on it. Hover over each dot to see the hotel name, rating, and price, or click on each dot to continue with booking that hotel.

Hot Tip: You can also search for popular areas for eating, sightseeing, shopping and nightlife on this map.

The middle section of your screen will have a list of all the hotels available for your chosen dates. Just like with flights, these default to being sorted by “Recommended.” If you want to sort by price, adjust the settings at the top right underneath the search box.

Note that the price you see to the right of the hotel name is not necessarily the cheapest price! However, the great thing about KAYAK is that you can see the prices for each hotel on lots of different OTAs as well as the hotel website. You’ll see these prices underneath the hotel name and rating; click the drop-down menu for a full list.

Prices shown for hotels don’t include taxes, which can be pretty high. For example, I searched for a hotel for a long weekend in Chicago and chose the Park Hyatt (listed for $475 per night from Expedia). When I clicked through to complete the booking, I discovered per night taxes of $82.66!

Hot Tip: Prices shown from hotel websites are not member rates. Be sure to check the member rates on your specific hotel’s website — they are usually lower!

When I clicked through to Expedia , Orbitz , Travelocity , and Hotwire , they all featured the $475 per night price and added taxes for a total of $2,230.64 for a 4-night stay.

However, when I went to book directly with Hyatt, I found a non-member total for 4 nights of $2,230.60 ($.04 cheaper), while the member price was $2,141.35 for 4 nights. So by signing up as a World of Hyatt member (which you should definitely do because it’s free!) and booking directly through Hyatt, you’d be saving $89.29.

Plus, you will be eligible to earn hotel points and take advantage of any elite status you may have when you book directly through the hotel’s website.

Another hotel available for the same weekend had an advertised price of $429 on all the major OTAs including Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Hotwire. This was also the price offered directly from the hotel, making the total for a 4-night stay booked through any of these sites $2,014.60.

Hot Tip: Booking a “Hacker Stay” fare can save big bucks on your next hotel stay.

However, this hotel had a “Hacker Stay” rate of $392 per night. The total price for the Hacker Stay was $1,839.45 — that’s a savings of $175.15 for the exact same hotel room!

When I clicked through to book, I found that this stay consisted of 1 night booked through Hotels.com and 3 nights booked through Expedia. If you choose this route, you’ll end up with 2 separate reservations and might have to switch rooms halfway through your stay (though the hotel can usually combine those reservations upon check-in).

Kayak Hacker Stay

You can save selected hotels to come back to later by clicking on “Watch” right under the orange View Deal button. This will automatically create a saved Trip for you with all your hotel selections.

To track prices for your search, just toggle the button at the top right corner of your screen (to the right of the search box) until you see a check mark.

Kayak Car Rentals

To start your search for a car rental on Kayak , simply input your chosen city plus dates in the search bar at the top of your screen. At the top left you can choose whether you want to drop off the car at the same or a different location as pickup.

Clicking on the calendar icon will bring up a drop-down box to choose your dates, pick-up time, and drop-off time. You can also choose to bring up comparison sites underneath the location box to view prices at Hertz , Hotwire , Priceline , Budget, and Avis .

Just as with searching for flights or hotels on Kayak, searching for rental cars follows a similar pattern. To the left of your screen you’ll find all the options to help narrow your search. You can choose to sort your search by car capacity, car type, payment type, rental agency, price, and other car options like number of doors or type of transmission.

After you narrow your search, all your options will be featured in the middle of your screen. Above the list you can choose how to sort your results (recommended, lowest price, or distance), and you’ll see an alert if it’s a good time to book.

Kayak Car Rental Search

Each listing will tell you the type of vehicle, bag capacity, number of doors, rental company, and whether this is a Special Rate. These Special Rate deals will keep the car rental agency hidden until booking is completed. Use the drop-down arrow in the orange box or section on the right side of the screen to compare Kayaks pricing to other websites.

In an example search, I found car rental prices all over the map. I searched a midsize car for 4 days in Chicago and came up with a price of $200. This doesn’t include tax, so you do have to click through to your chosen website to see what the actual price will be. Here is what I found:

  • Kayak – $216.40
  • Orbitz – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Thrify – $216.40 (I clicked on their “hot deals” button and got the price down to $207.69)
  • Cheaptickets.com – Not available once I clicked through, but there were other car options available
  • Rentalcars.com – Didn’t show price at all

There was also a “Special Rate” available for a similar midsize car for only $139.19. If you aren’t picky about exact car type or who you rent from, these Special Rate prices offer a great deal.

Kayak Packages

Lots of people use OTAs and travel search engines to find great vacation package deals. To see Kayak’s deals , click on “Packages” in the search bar at the top of your screen. From here you’ll see a search bar just like in the Flights section.

First, fill in your destination and dates to get a list of flights. Once you select the flight you want, you’ll be able to add a hotel to make a package deal.

Bottom Line: You can save money by booking your hotel and flight together through Kayak’s “Packages” option.

Right underneath your chosen flight you will see the “Add a Hotel” section. To see what kind of deals I could get, I searched for a 5-night trip from Boston to Las Vegas. This search returned 3 featured offers with varying levels of advertised savings, and I could see more deals by clicking on the blue “View More Hotels” button.

Hot Tip: The hotel offerings change quickly! The offers I had changed even when I did the same search only minutes apart. If you see something you like, you should book right away.

The first option was a hotel stay at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino, which advertised a $367 savings. I tend to be skeptical about package deals, so I wanted to check it out myself. Booking this package including a round-trip flight plus 5 nights at Treasure Island would cost $800.86.

Booking the flight separately was $216.37, and booking the hotel directly through their website would be $951.60, for a total of $1,167.97 if booked separately. That does work out to a $367 savings when booking the package, which is pretty significant and exactly as advertised.

If you have a destination in mind and are looking to find the most inexpensive time to travel, Kayak’s Packages have you covered there too.

Scroll to the bottom of the Packages tab, and you will see a section called “Search Vacation Deals By Destination.” When you click on a city in this section, you’ll be able to see price trends throughout the year. This tool will show estimated pricing for a package each month, allowing you to pick the most economical option. (Keep in mind these are just estimates and actual prices may vary.)

Kayak Packages

Hot Tip: Kayak no longer has the ability to search for and book cruises.

Kayak Guides is a great tool to start planning some activities for your upcoming trip. Guides can be found by clicking on the “More” drop-down box in the main search bar at the top of your screen.

From here you can input your destination or search by region or popular destinations.

In each city guide, you’ll find general information about the area as well as suggestions on things to do, places to eat, most and least expensive times to visit, and even average weather throughout the year. You can see how to get there including links to take you to search for flights. You can also see information about different areas of the city including links to hotels in that area.

One of my favorite parts of this tool is the map of the city that shows you popular areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife. Just click on the item you want to see and watch the colors on the map change to reveal the popular areas for your chosen activity.

This map also shows hotel locations. For more information, just click on a dot — this will bring up hotel info as well as a link to click through and book.

Kayak Guides Map

Bottom Line: Kayak Guides is a great resource to help plan every aspect of your trip, including best times to visit, local weather, and best areas for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and nightlife.

You can find Kayak trips in the upper right corner of your screen. This is where you can keep all of your trip information and itineraries in 1 spot. There are several options for managing this feature:

  • Add your trip manually
  • Connect your email inbox to import booking receipt emails
  • Forward your booking emails to [email protected].

Once your flights are added, you will be able to see real-time updates for check-in, flight status, and gate change information. Plus, you will be able to access your itinerary offline.

Hot Tip: Use Kayak trips to organize and share all of your vacation details.

If you are traveling with a group, you can share all the trip details with your group by creating a link to your trip information page. Once you’re viewing your trip details, look for the blue “Share” button, which brings up a link to your trip information that you can send to friends and family. You can also allow someone else to edit the trip information from this button.

Kayak Deals can be found under the More drop-down in the main menu. This section differs from Kayak Packages in that you can’t build your own trip; the deals you find here are set packages that all include different things (vacation packages, cruises, flights, hotels, etc.).

Some of these deals were straightforward and easily bookable through an OTA, while others were a little more complicated. For example, I found a 6-day Dublin and Killarney rail vacation package, but I couldn’t just click through and book right away. Instead, clicking through took me to an OTA where I’d need to request a quote. While that’s not really a big deal, it does take more effort than just hitting the “buy now” button!

While you might think Kayak is an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Orbitz, it’s really a different animal. Kayak is a search engine, and it’s a great tool to use to begin your travel planning.

The great thing about Kayak is that it compares prices between all the OTAs you’re familiar with (like Expedia and Orbitz), plus airline and hotel websites. This lets you see where the best prices are without having to go to each individual website.

Kayak also offers tools to help with planning and organizing your trips. It’s a 1-stop shop to research and plan any vacation you can imagine!

The Complete Guide to Booking Travel with Kayak

Frequently Asked Questions

How does kayak work.

Kayak is a travel search engine. It searches hundreds of travel sites including OTAs, discount suppliers, and the airline/hotel/car rental agency’s direct websites to show you all the options in 1 place.

How Do You Change or Cancel a Flight Booked on Kayak?

You will need to contact the provider that you clicked through to (airline, hotel, or an OTA) to book your reservation for customer service. If you booked on Kayak, then you can go to the Bookings area of the site (accessible through Trips) to get support and information on your specific flight/hotel stay/car rental, etc. However, most likely you will still need to contact the provider directly.

When Is the Best Time to Book Airline Tickets Through Kayak?

As with booking flights from any website, there is no real answer to this question. There are lots of factors that go into airline ticket prices, so it’s hard to pinpoint when a fare will be at it’s lowest. However, Kayak does offer a few tools to help you.

The “Our Advice” box in the upper left corner of your search screen gives you a short-term prediction of how prices might change in the following week. You can also track your search by changing the Track Prices button to “On.” This will trigger a daily Price Alert email advising you of the current price trends for your search.

Are Kayak Flights Refundable?

Generally, no. Any flight that you access through Kayak will be subject to the airline’s cancellation policy. However, any flight booked with a U.S.-based carrier at least 1 week before departure can be canceled up to 24 hours after booking without penalty. (Be careful with American Airlines, as their policy only allows you to hold a flight for up to 24 hours without payment)

Are Kayak Hacker Fares Safe?

Yes, Kayak Hacker Fares are safe as long as you understand how they work. Hacker Fares are simply a combination of one-way flights that are cheaper than a round-trip. These flights can be on separate airlines, which means the second leg of your flight might not be protected.

For instance, if bad weather cancels your outbound flight, you might decide to stay home and skip your trip altogether. But since your return flight is on a separate reservation, it will not be refunded like your canceled outbound flight. Overall, this risk is relatively minor, but it’s good to know before you purchase a Hacker Fare.

If you are booking a Hacker Stay for your hotel, this will consist of 2 separate reservations. The only downside to this is that you might have to switch rooms during your stay. However, many times you can ask the front desk to combine your reservations when you’re checking in.

Why Doesn't Kayak Show Southwest Flights?

Southwest fares are only available on Southwest.com. You will not be able to search for these flights on Kayak or any OTA like Expedia or Orbitz.

Is Kayak Legit? Here’s What You Need To Know

Found some great deals on Kayak and you want to know if they’re legit before you give them any money? Then you’re definitely in the right place because this detailed guide will tell you everything you need to know about Kayak!

The short answer is yes, Kayak is legit and you don’t have to worry about giving them your money. That’s because you can’t really give your money to Kayak – they’re more of a search engine that lets you search for flights, accommodation, and rental car prices. Keep reading to learn more about Kayak and how to use the platform!

What is Kayak & How Does It Work?

Kayak is a website for searching for flights, vacation rentals, and car rentals. It’s a great website to use when planning a trip, but it is important to note that you cannot book flights or homes directly on the platform.

Kayak will search for the best deals on flights and stays across its partnering websites and present you with all your options. When you find a deal you like, you can go to their partner’s website to learn more about it. It’s very similar to Skyscanner and Google Flights search and is an extremely useful platform for vacation planning.

Looking for a flight schedule or vacation rentals on Kayak is much more efficient than looking at just one platform because you’re browsing through more options immediately.

The website has many helpful filters and features you can use to really narrow down the search for deals, and you can track prices for flights and stays you’re interested in and get push notifications when they’re at their cheapest point.

Is Kayak Legit?

Yes, Kayak is a legit website that’s been around for almost two decades. It’s an extremely useful platform for searching for deals, and if you know how to use it, you can save quite a bit of money on vacations. Kayak flights are perhaps the most popular part of the platform because it allows travelers to find the cheapest flights to the destinations they want to visit.

That being said, I have to point out that most people who have had some sort of issue when booking deals they found on Kayak didn’t have the best experience with Kayak customer service. But that’s because Kayak isn’t directly responsible for the bookings, so if you do have an issue with anything, you will need to contact the customer service of the partner you booked with.

Is Kayak Reliable?

Kayak is only as reliable as its partners and providers, so it mostly depends on which third-party booking sites you use to complete the booking. The platform partners with well-known booking providers like Expedia, Agoda, and Booking.com, but also some lesser-known agencies that can be hit or miss.

Kayak also partners with countless airlines as well as many third-party sites, so it’s up to you to decide who you want to buy your ticket from. It’s generally smarter to purchase tickets directly from the airline because it will be easier to change the tickets if necessary, but they usually won’t be the cheapest tickets.

If you want to ensure you have a great experience no matter what, try to book flights, stays, and cars through their most reputable partners. On the other hand, if you’re looking for the cheapest deals available, be prepared to do a lot of research and review reading to avoid having a negative experience.

How to Book Safely on Kayak

You can’t really book anything on Kayak, but you can search for the best deals and safely book from their partners. Make sure that you’re reading all the fine print when you’re searching for something on Kayak – if you’re booking flights with connections, double check the time of the layover, baggage allowances on all the flights, whether they’re basic economy seats, and all the other relevant information.

Also, when you find a deal you like, try to find out as much about the website that offers it, especially if it’s not something famous and established like Expedia or Booking. Look for TrustPilot and SiteJabber reviews of the website, and see what other travelers are saying about their experiences with them.

Another thing to note is that you should be extra careful when booking accommodation, especially if it’s not a popular hotel. Kayak will present you with the best deals for private home rentals and other vacation packages, and sometimes this might include options that are fairly new or don’t have the best reviews.

That’s why when you go to check out the rental on the partnering website, you should read through all the reviews left by other travelers. Book the accommodation only if you see that the vast majority of people who stayed there are satisfied with their experience, or that their qualms are something you’re confident won’t bother you as much.

How to Find the Best Deals on Kayak

Setting flexible dates for Kayak flight booking will help you find the cheapest deals. When selecting dates for flights, you can select a flexibility of up to three days. That way, you’re presented with deals you wouldn’t see with fixed dates, and the amount of money you can save is astonishing.

I looked for flights from Zagreb to Lisbon between the 22nd and 26th of May. The cheapest flight for these dates is around 300 Euros, with a 20+ hour stopover with is less than ideal. But when I confirmed that my dates were flexible, I was presented with a 210 Euro flight option with a 9-hour stopover. It’s still not the perfect solution, but it’s significantly better than the first deal.

Kayak will present you with three categories at the top of your search – Cheapest, Best, and Quickest. The cheapest flights usually include long layovers or even more than one layover, and they’re rarely a good option.

The best deal is what they deem to be the best price with an acceptable stopover length, while the quickest option displays the flight that gets you there the fastest, and is usually the most expensive option.

It’s worth noting that it’s possible to select flexible dates only for flights. You can’t do this when looking for hotels or a rental car, but you can sort the options from lowest to highest price.

Advantages of Using Kayak

The main advantage of using Kayak is that you’re simultaneously looking at deals from multiple other platforms, similar to Google Flights and Skyscanner. It eliminates the need to open dozens of tabs to compare prices on different websites because Kayak does all the work for you.

This is excellent because you can find deals that you would otherwise be unaware of, and save a lot of money on your trips. Especially because Kayak also gives you the option to select a departure airport, and then shows you the cheapest flights available there. This is very helpful if you don’t have a destination in mind – you just want to travel somewhere and do it for as little money as possible.

Another good thing about Kayak is that you can set up price alerts. So, if you’re planning a vacation that’s ways away in the future, you can get emails and notifications for deals on plane tickets.

Disadvantages of Using Kayak

One of the main downsides of using Kayak is that you’re limited only to the booking providers they partner with. You won’t see deals from websites that aren’t official partners of Kayak, and sometimes those websites might offer better deals that you’re unaware of.

Also, there aren’t any Kayak reviews directly on the website. The travelers can see the reviews of properties on the site of the provider, but there’s no way to leave reviews directly on the Kayak website which is a bit of a downside.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Kayak isn’t directly responsible for any of the bookings completed with their partners, so their customer service won’t do much for you in case of issues with your booking.

They might try to talk with the partnering website on your behalf, but this isn’t guaranteed. That’s why you should always book with Kayak’s best and most trusted partners, even if they might not be the cheapest.

Are there hidden fees on Kayak?

No, there are no hidden fees on Kayak. The platform displays the prices as they are on the websites of their booking providers, and they do not charge travelers any additional fees. That’s one of the best things about using Kayak – you can essentially look through the deals on hundreds of different sites free of charge, and find the options that are best suited for your needs.

Are flights booked on KAYAK refundable?

That depends on where you end up booking the flight. You can’t actually book anything on Kayak – the website only displays the prices of flights from their partners, and then you get redirected to the partner website when you want to complete the booking.

All purchases are finalized on the provider’s website, so whether or not the flight is refundable depends on the type of ticket and where you booked it.

Is Kayak the same as Expedia?

No, Kayak is not the same as Expedia. Expedia is a travel agency that offers deals on flights and stays, whereas Kayak is more of a travel search engine that lets you look for flights and accommodation across a variety of platforms.

Kayak is more similar to Skyscanner than anything else – both are reputable websites that browse the web for deals on flights, stays, and rental cars, and then present you with all the best options. Both websites then redirect you to their partner, and only then can you book something.

What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • Compare hundreds of travel sites at once to find cheap flights, the best flight deals and cheap airfare.
  • 2018 Customer Choice Winner

Critical highlights

  • The Manager is extremely unprofessional and needs to take a course in customer service .
  • SAS Airlines could not help me beca use KAYAK booked the travel.
  • But I'll be damned if I'll be handing over my credit cards or debit cards to the hotel after this last fiasco AND LOSS.

“Good Customer Service”

Since Kayak offers discounts from other websites, I appreciate it. The fact that they don't provide discounts for Southwest Airlines—which often have cheaper prices if you don't mind delayed flights—is noteworthy. When comparing prices on several booking websites, such Expedia and Priceline, I usually use Kayak.

“Do Not purchase. Switch from Canadian $ to USD”

I was clearly on the Canadian Kayak Website. A flight deal flashed on the website. It was a scam cause it was in USD and it never clearly stated it was in USD. When I complained they provided me a AI response of how their computer only generated to the locale that the user is using. Which is not true cause I am in Canada. Flights were way cheaper on Expedia and WestJet.

I used Kayak twice. The first time it was quite good experience. But recently I faced the problem when tried to rebook the flight. It took me three hours to talk to the service rep. It was stressful! You really need to do something about it!

Bought a ticket through KAYAK, the airline moved the date forward, making it useless for me. Nobody could give me my money back for a while. Finnair was saying it wasn't booked through them, KAYAK was saying they did not book it (I have the receipt from them, confirmation number and all), could not get to anyone at KAYAK who would tell me what the third party is or even try to be helpful. HOURS spent. Their insurance company won't have anything to do with this either, I could not get my money back at all, they just keep saying it's not the situation they cover. After I wrote this review someone got in touch with me and eventually paid me back. Not the insurance money though, that was entirely wasted, never buy flight insurance, it seems to be just scam.

Do not trust this agency. I couldn't board my flight I had 2 tickets worth over 2000$. I contacted the airline and they said I can rebook my tickets through my agency and the agency said the airline doesn't allow it. They are liars

From the business

Kayak is a large price comparison search engine for travel. It has prices for plane tickets, hotels, car rentals, and vacation packages. Kayak doesn't sell any of these services directly, but instead directs you to another site where you can make a purchase.

Complicated Trip made possible by Kayak

We were trying to put together quite a complicated trip, 3 countries, 8 flights, with some gaps - so not a full round trip, and a preference for a specific airline on some of it. Just couldn't price it on the airlines own website. It did take a bit to understand how to refine the searches, with all the options available. But in the end very happy with the price and included a destination we have never been to before on the return leg. Happy and excited.

VOLIAMO Travel (via KAYAK)

Be careful when booking with Voliamo via Kayak!! I had the same problem as other customers! I made the booking online, payment went through, and I received the confirmation. 30 minutes later I started to get calls from PH Travel (same company as Voliamo), telling me that my credit card payment has been flagged as high risk, and I need to make an immediate bank transfer, otherwise they will cancel the flight. They kept calling me, harassing me until I agreed to cancel. I then booked with another provider!

Holiday increase after booking

Booked my holiday and then received an email the morning after to say my flights had increased in price and I needed to pay an extra £500 to confirm to booking, I then received a voucher to get £10 off my next booking and I needed to use this by June.

I recently used kayak to book a flight, and I found it to be working well. It's easy to navigate, and you can compare prices from different airlines and agencies. They also have filters to see results for specific times of the day which was useful. Would use it again

Alamo did NOT have my choice of SUV plus they were forcing me to pay for a SUV and offered me a stupid car like Toyota Corolla…

Alamo didn’t have my Compact SUV booked and paid. They gave me a lousy old SUV and I had lot of troubles at the Bodrum airport plus the heat around and children after a long flight. Very unhappy with Kayak and associates and won’t book again!!

Good deal on the website

Good deal on the website. Website didn’t make it clear bags were not included. I sent a message that I was informed would receive a response in 24hrs but it didn’t. I also received a call from the US at midnight to ask me about something random.

Hey James, we will be happy to hear more about your experience so we can improve. You can use this contact form to share it here: kayak.co.uk/support

I’ve completely lost confidence in Kayak

Kayak lost my details and I had to re-register as a new user. All of my previous trips have been lost, as each of the emails containing the links to those trips now just generates an error. Very disappointing. I’ve completely lost confidence in Kayak.

Cheeky price drop

The search aspect of the app was really good, it gave cheap results quickly, allowed you to save trips and get alerts if the prices changed. What I didn't like is that as soon as I had bought my ticket, the priced dropped about £80. I was already worried about paying flights costs and this just made it seem really unfair when travel is so expensive as it is.

It took more than several attempts to…

It took more than several attempts to complete my booking as the page disappeared when I tapped the check out button, this was very frustrating, I'd have given up had the price been comparable to other sites. When I had finally completed my payment I wasn't filled with confidence when all the details were transferred to another site, linked to kayak, called Chatdeal. The communication has been sporadic, emails answered at late hours at night, and occasionally abrupt attitude. I get the feeling it's not UK based. However all had gone through relatively simply with my booking, which was for flight only. I booked my seat direct with the airline which was cheaper than the quote I got from Chatdeal.

This company is just a scam

This company is just a scam! They were showing the price in EUR and then charged me in USD without prior notice nor my consent. I ended up paying more for this ticket because of that false information and the company rejects to refund me this price difference and extra charges. Will never use it again.

Easy to book and go.

This website made booking my holiday so easy. I'm on a multicity holiday in the USA, and I just input my dates and cities and Kayak came up with a price cheaper than the other sites I had used. I was offered the opportunity to select from a long list of Airlines and Airports to sort out the easiest and best options for me.

Incorrect descriptions of cars and misleading images (Aston Martin, which turned into a Fiat 500 once booked). Customer service is awful as well, as with most companies these days.

A lifesaver!

I have come to rely completely on the Kayak app which has become a lifesaver when we take any trip. Not only does it update me on flight details (and possible delays), it also provides a clear itinerary and further detail. Highly recommended to everyone who travels anywhere!

Date of experience : 13 July 2023

Kayak has the best trip planner out…

Kayak has the best trip planner out there. Particularly, now that Google has discontinued theirs. It is actually more intuitive than Google's ever was. The best feature for me are the text notifications telling you if a plane is on time and when a gate is assigned. This is something Google never offered.

Date of experience : 05 May 2023

I just love Kayak

I just love Kayak. Not only is it the best tickets finding platform, it is also the best tracking up. I can always be sure to know the delays (or punctuality) of my flights, the gates, the terminals, the baggage belts etc. What is the most convenient is that they send SMS with the most crucial information - it is super important when you arrive in a country where you don't have internet connection or roaming. Thank you for that, Kayak!

Date of experience : 07 May 2023

BeBetter than most but not perfect

Has more multi city options than other sites. It's a struggle to change the sequence of locations. Needs a drag and drop for whole lines then allowing date adjustment. Results ignore some available flights and times, very frustrating.

Date of experience : 12 June 2023

Kayak was the last of many travel…

Kayak was the last of many travel websites I visited. All the others pretty much had identical flight postings. Kayak was the only one which posted the discount airline flight routings which offered me a wider range of options.

The Pros and Cons of Booking Through Online Travel Agencies

Carissa Rawson

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

You’re likely already familiar with online travel agencies, even if you don’t travel often. These companies — such as Priceline , Expedia and Orbitz — act as intermediaries between you and a travel provider.

Booking your travel through an OTA can be a good idea in some circumstances, but you’ll want to be wary of its pitfalls. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of online travel agencies, so you’ll know what to use to book your next vacation.

Pros of booking through online travel agencies

There are certainly advantages booking through online travel agencies, though you’ll find different experiences whether you’re using public OTAs — such as Kayak — or private ones like those offered by your card issuer, such as the Chase's travel portal .

✅ It may be cheaper

When searching for flights online, you may see different prices for the same routes that vary across websites. Although it may be a result of fare type — for example, some search results may not clarify that a fare is basic economy rather than main cabin or economy — other times, the difference comes down to competition for your business.

Online travel services will often offer slightly lower prices on flights in an effort to entice you as a customer. This is true for both hotels and airlines.

» Learn more: Best credit cards for online travel-booking websites

✅ It can earn you more rewards

Have you ever heard of shopping portals ? By logging into a shopping portal, you can earn rewards for purchases made with many online merchants. Some hotel chains, such as Hilton , Marriott and IHG , can be accessed through shopping portals while still booking directly on the hotel website. In this way, you can earn rewards with the hotel directly as well as with the shopping portal.

The same isn’t true for shopping portals and most airline sites. However, many public online travel agencies are accessible through shopping portals, which can then earn you rewards for airfare bookings. By opting to book in this way, you’ll be able to earn points or cash-back rewards through the shopping portal that you’d otherwise miss.

Some card issuers will also reward you heavily when using their online travel services. Clear examples of this can be seen with Capital One and Chase. With the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , for example, you’ll get 10 miles per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel .

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is similar. With this card, you can get 10 Ultimate Rewards® points per dollar spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase's portal.

While these numbers are high, it’s important to remember that there are trade-offs when booking through an OTA rather than directly with a hotel or airline. We’ll get into that a little later.

Online travel agencies offered by your card issuer may not feature the same prices as booking directly; you’ll want to compare these before committing to a purchase.

Some card issuers will go so far as to give your points more value when redeeming through their online travel agencies.

This is true with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . When redeeming points on Chase's travel portal, you’ll get 1.25 cents in value per point rather than 1 cent elsewhere.

There are several downsides when it comes to using online travel services for booking travel. It mainly comes down to the fact that travel providers prefer that you book directly with them — and offer more perks to woo your business.

❌ It can be harder to change a booking

Ever needed to change a flight after it's booked? No matter the reason, attempting to alter or otherwise cancel a flight can be a hassle — especially if you’ve booked through a third party.

Generally speaking, rather than offering you direct assistance, both hotels and airlines will recommend you contact the online travel agency you’ve booked with in order to make any changes.

While you may be able to make changes or get refunds with the travel agency, airlines and hotels can — and will — offer much more flexibility when you’ve booked with them directly. You may also be subject to additional fees charged by the online travel agency, which can erase any savings you’ve received.

❌ You may not receive elite benefits

This is the real kicker for anyone wanting elite status. Although airlines will almost always recognize your elite status and allow you to earn miles even for bookings made through an online travel agency, hotels and rental car companies will not.

This is especially important for hotel chains. Earning elite status with hotels generally relies on elite night credits. Although these can be earned in a variety of ways — including having complimentary status by holding certain credit cards — the main method of acquiring elite night credits is by spending nights in hotels. Rooms booked through an online travel agency do not count toward elite status as elite night credits.

Additionally, you will not receive any of the benefits of your existing elite status if your booking is through a third party. This can mean the loss of perks such as room upgrades, complimentary breakfast and even free Wi-Fi.

❌ It may be more expensive

Did you know that many hotel chains have best price guarantees? Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott and IHG all have a guarantee that’ll give you either points or a discount if you find a better rate elsewhere.

These guarantees are generous; Hilton, for example, will match the rate and then discount it by a further 25%.

Although you’ll need to file claims for these guarantees and they face limitations — such as a 24-hour window from when you made the booking — you can save a lot of money on your stay if your request is approved.

Online travel agencies can be hit or miss

There are two sides to every coin and this is no different, as there are several benefits and limitations of online travel services. Depending on your needs and loyalty program status, you’ll want to choose whether to book directly with a travel provider or rely on OTAs to do the job for you.

Booking travel through credit card portals from issuers like Chase and Capital One can earn you big rewards. But if you anticipate altering your travel plans or aim to earn elite status instead, booking directly is the way to go.
