Zam's Swamp Tours

Thibodaux, Louisiana

The town of Kraemer is so small, it had to buy a used drawbridge when its old one collapsed into the Lac des Allemands bayou. This fascinating fact is one of many that you'll learn when you take Zam's Bayou Swamp Tour, one of the better of the dozen-or-so swamp excursions that encircle New Orleans.

Kraemer is out in the middle of nowhere and Zam's is its principal industry. The rickety signs lining Highway 307 trumpet Zam's tours, but most of its money is made wholesaling alligator skulls -- 10,000 last year -- which are then resold by nearly every gift shop in New Orleans. What doesn't go to the big city ends up in Zam's gift shop, filling the walls floor-to-ceiling and stacked on every available flat surface. Even the fences that surround Zam's property are studded with the toothy skulls, drying in the delta sun.

Mr. Zam is of undetermined age and yearns to retire, so he's turned the tour side of the business over his son, "Wild Bill" Tregle. Wild Bill freely admits that he doesn't want this responsibility, but he needs the money to pay for his Corvette, his beer, and his party-hearty lifestyle with his motorcycle gang buddies. Capt. Wild Bill is in his mid-forties but, he reflects, he's in no hurry to grow up.

Since you'll probably be the only person on the tour, Wild Bill feels free to ignore nature and talks instead about his drinking, his run-ins with the police, and his quirky bayou neighbors. This, as it turns out, makes for an entirely satisfactory swamp tour, as there is otherwise very little to spark conversation out here besides basking turtles and an occasional undulating water snake.

"See that shack over there?" Capt. Wild Bill asks, pointing to a shanty half-hidden in the cypress. "No running water. The woman who lives there is ninety-five and she has to shower out of a bucket."

"Why doesn't someone connect her to a water main?"

"You don't want to help that lady. She's a WITCH!"

Wild Bill's tours last an hour, but budget some extra time to tour Zam's "zoo" (where every exhibit ends up in the processing plant) and Edwina's Cookin' Cajun Cafe (whose dishes specialize in skull-less alligators).

To cap off your visit, tip Wild Bill enough to buy a six-pack and he'll drag gators and loggerheads out of their display pits and pose for novelty snapshots. "This turtle is 126 years old and can BITE YOUR LEG OFF!"

ZZ was an awesome tour guide. We started with a tour of his 'backyard' which consisted of chickens, goats, turtles, rabbits, raccoons and of course alligators from little babies to a giant papa. This was as authentic as you can get. ZZ was full of information and very charismatic. We highly recommend choosing Zam's Swamp Tour.

I highly recommend Zam's! I went here with my bachelorette party and we had a blast! ZZ was really fun and very interactive! We got to hold the baby alligators and snake. They do a great job making it a real Cajun experience. We will be back! Thank you for the wonderful memories!

ZZ was great tour guide (guy with the short shorts)! We had so much fun!

We came across Zam's when we found out another swamp tour in the area we had made reservations with didn't take cards. We were so disappointed - we really wanted to do a swamp tour! We figured we'd try our luck at Zam's, which we'd seen a sign for earlier. I cannot possibly overstate how awesome this place was! Let me start with the facts: - It's weird. There's a room full of snakes, and the owners have pet racoons, goats, chickens, and alligators. I'll spare you the details, you'll learn about them when you get there. - It's run by fantastic people. Diego was our guide, and he was the most entertaining, informative, friendly person we encountered on our whole trip to LA. I wish i could be best friends with him. - it's a lot of bang for your buck. I saw Diego smack an alligator in the mouth with a flip flop while hanging onto a tree branch. You'll pretty much be edge of your seat the whole time. This was such a fantastic tour - I want to go back and do it again! And for $25 it was a steal, I would have paid double for it! It was honestly the best part of our entire vacation. Thank you so much Diego!

If you are looking for smoothly run, professional tour, this might not be for you. If you are looking to meet a bayou character who will regale you with f-bomb laden alligator wrangling stories and Cajun recipes, then you might enjoy it. Our tour began in the backyard of Zam's parents home where we met his menagerie of animals: chickens, goats, rabbits,...and several alligators and turtles kept in what seemed like inhumane conditions. He theatrically poked a massive sleeping alligator (this one he claims to have caught single-handedly after hours of fighting) producing what seemed like a staged, but impressive roar out of the poor guy. The petting zoo experience left me feeling a little sad. The trip on the pontoon was rather dull - Zam didn't even try to find any wildlife. We saw a couple of herons was all. We asked lots of questions and Zam answered them knowledgeably. He has a ton of personality and was very entertaining. Of particular note was Zam's extensive knowledge of bayou hunting and fishing.

Photo of Danny P.

ZZ is a great entertainer. A real look at southern Louisiana. I took a large group there and everyone loved it. A lot of cool animals that you'll be able to get a better interaction with then at the zoo. Must see

Photo of Rana B.

Best authentic tour of the swamp. We have been on others and they don't compare. Diego is the real deal. He was born and raised in the local area. He entertained and educated us. Would come back again.

Best experience ever. People be so friendly. Also ZZ is so funny and nice. Definitely recommend this to place.

Photo of Shoni K.

They have a nice bayou to tour, just should leave out their petting zoo tour. Because it's obviously a "feeding farm" for the pet alligators and enormous snakes. I really couldn't handle that.... Wanted to let the bunnies, chickens, and goats out of their cages. AND the gators. Let it happen naturally! Won't go back or refer.

I found this place on yelp and it was the closest from d plantation location and WE LOVED our experience . Our guide Lloyd wad pleasant , knowledgeable and caring . I promise u ,u r safe when u r with Lloyd .

Last minute idea for something different on Mothers Day. It was a beautiful day, the tour was entertaining, the boat ride awesome. Diego (tour guide) was incredible. Very knowledgeable of the area and culture. Had a fantastic time... will go back again!!

Visit Cajun Country: Wander the Louisiana Bayous

Written by sj morgensen, louisiana | destinations | travel | united states.

Spend time in Louisiana’s Cajun Country to discover the best food, people, animal life, and culture. Read on for what you must do when you visit Cajun Country.

Everyone knows New Orleans is one of the culinary and cultural capitals of the United States. But you may not know that only 35 miles South is Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou, a place you can get lost in the Cajun culture of South Louisiana. I recently visited the area of Lafourche Parish, which includes towns like Thibodaux, Lockport, Galliano, Raceland, and Port Fourchon. I planned to eat great food, meet incredible people, and learn about Cajun culture. My trip was fabulous! I can honestly say that the folks in Cajun Country are among the nicest people I’ve met during my travels. They’re welcoming and desire to share their customs and heritage with visitors.

What's in This Article:

A Quick Cajun History

Cajuns are the descendants of Roman Catholic French Canadians, who, in the 1700s, were displaced from the French Canadian colony of Acadia by the British. Longing for familiarity, many of these Acadians eventually made their way to the French-speaking lands of southern Louisiana. “Cajun” is an anglicized version of the word “Acadian.”

According to Louisiana Cajun Bayou president Cody Gray, today, the entire area is a cultural gumbo, influenced by the French, Creole, Cajun, Black, German, Italian, and American Indians. This area is a melting pot of different peoples and cultures, and their various influences can be seen in everything from food to music to cultural celebrations.

Cajun Bayou Food Trail

One of the most important things to me while traveling is to eat dishes the area is known for, and I always eat local foods. The folks at Louisiana Cajun Bayou  are on the same wavelength and created the  Cajun Bayou Food Trail  to encourage people to try some of the local restaurants that serve Cajun fare or local seafood. Every restaurant on the Cajun Bayou Food Trail is a small, local business serving homemade, regional foods. With almost 20 restaurants on the trail, you can decide where to try. Going to at least five restaurants on the trail will get you a Cajun Bayou Food Trail t-shirt. How fun is that? Plus, of course, you’ll enjoy food prepared by expert chefs.

Bourgeois Meat Market—Four Generations Strong

At our first stop on the trail,  Bourgeois Meat Market , we saw sausage and jerky carefully prepared and hung out back in the smokehouses, just like they’ve been doing for generations. The family meat market that has existed since the late 1800s is still going strong today, with more than 30 employees. They make all kinds of traditional Louisiana delicacies and do whole carcass butchering in the tradition of a Boucherie . Back in the day, communities would come together for animal butchering, in which each family got a portion of the meat and took care to ensure that none of the animal would go to waste.

We sampled their made-in-house specialties at the market, including that Louisiana favorite, boudin. The spicy boudin sausage is a Louisiana staple and is traditionally made with pork and rice but can be made with shrimp, crawfish, or other meats. The boudin burritos here are fantastic. Also, try the famous jerky, beef stix, and the hard-to-find homemade boudin rouge.

Kajun Twist & Grill Down the Bayou in Lockwood, LA

We stopped at the Kajun Twist & Grill down the bayou in Lockport . Offering delicious Cajun specialties and other favorites from chef Anthony Goldsmith, this is where we dug into excellent gumbo and incredible onion rings! Trust me—it’s a great combination. Anthony comes from a long line of chefs. His great-grandmother was the award-winning chef Alzina Toups, known far and wide for her exquisite Cajun cooking. Anthony told us he did not need to go to formal culinary school. He learned from the best teachers right at home. We were lucky to get our hands on one of Alzina’s popular hard-to-find cookbooks. I already made her bread pudding with bourbon sauce, which was fabulous.

Cajun Food Trail Highlights in Thibodaux, LA

Our other stops on the food trail were back in Thibodaux. With a population of almost 100,000 and the seat of Lafourche Parish, Thibodaux has its share of good restaurants. In downtown Thibodaux, we had tastings at several of them.

At  Spahr’s Downtown , along with our tasty desserts, we debated whether potato salad belongs in gumbo, on the side, or nowhere near gumbo! Folks around here like potato salad in their gumbo. Bread pudding is a southern delight, and they do it right at Spahr’s.

We enjoyed a decadent appetizer at  Cinclare Southern Bistro . The rich, creamy alligator and andouille cheesecake Chef Logan Boudreaux serves unlike any cheesecake I’ve ever had and is simply divine. Another favorite is the roasted Brussels sprouts. These aren’t the mushy, boiled sprouts we remember from grade school. The roasting process brings out the natural sugar, which carmelizes the sprouts and turns them into delicious little treats. Chef Boudreaux attended the Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University and the prestigious Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, France . Most chefs at the restaurants we visited are native Louisianians, and many are graduates of the 4-year culinary program at local Nicholls State.

Another mainstay in town, Fremin’s, is known for steaks and seafood. This upscale restaurant is housed in a gorgeous, historic building that’s been lovingly restored. It’s worth a stop.

Cajun Swamp Tour

When you’re in south Louisiana, a swamp tour is a must. But not just any swamp tour. You need to do a Cajun bayou swamp tour with Zam’s Swamp Tours for an authentic trip through the backwaters of the bayou. You won’t meet a more down-to-earth tour guide than Z, whose colorful personality will keep you entertained the whole afternoon.

2 Days In Cajun Country - Zam's Swamp Tours

Me With A Nutria at Zam’s Swamp Tours. Photo by SJ Morgensen

After a scenic, leisurely 30-minute drive from Thibodaux, we found Zam’s property way off the beaten path in tiny Kraemer, Louisiana. Zam’s place is an interesting mix of old cars, wooden buildings, live animals, and pontoon boats in the bayou. We started things off with a tour of the animal menagerie. We followed along as Z showed us his collection of alligators, nutria (similar to a swamp rat), giant turtles, snakes, goats, and raccoons. I even got to hold a 3-week old baby gator! Z is super knowledgeable. Having grown up in the area, this land is almost a part of him, and he knows it well.

We then jumped on the pontoon boat for a leisurely cruise down the bayou. The bayou is bordered by untouched land in its natural state. If your timing is right, you can see alligators, deer, plenty of snakes, including copperheads, water moccasins, coral, and other animals native to the swamplands along the bayou. But even if you don’t see any of the animals, you’ll get an authentic Cajun experience from a local born and raised here. You can’t do any better than Zam’s Swamp Tours. We had a blast! Touring the swamp with Z was indeed a wow moment!

Jean Lafitte Historical Park & Preserve Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center

While a visit to the  Jean Lafitte Historical Park & Preserve was on our list, the facility was closed for remodeling when we were there but is now reopened. I was so disappointed because I’ve heard from numerous people how fabulous this place is. If you want to learn all about Acadian heritage and culture, this is the place. From the early days of the Cajun culture in the 1600s to the present day, the Lafourche Parish has a fascinating history that you’ll discover through photos, exhibits, and ranger-led programs. You’ll have the chance to go on a narrated boat tour down the bayou. The center also has weekly cultural programs to immerse you in Cajun culture. Tuesday nights, you can learn the Cajun French language, then relax to the music of south Louisiana, including zydeco, gospel, blues, jazz, and Cajun.

Bayou Country Children’s Museum Is A Treasure

At the  Bayou Country Children’s Museum , we saw fun and educational things for kids. The museum is full of activities, including a gigantic, full-size sugarcane harvester, a cool shrimp boat, a 2-story oil platform, and more. Kids will love to explore and learn about what their parents do for a living as they go off to work on the oil rig or the shrimp boat. The museum also collaborates with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office to provide child safety programs on various topics, including fire and severe weather safety. The onsite sheriff runs puppet shows highlighting safety, and their smokey fire simulation room is a brilliant way to teach kids fire safety.

South Louisiana Festivals

Although we didn’t visit during Mardi Gras, we did learn that you don’t have to be in New Orleans to celebrate the holiday. Lafourche Parish has many Mardi Gras celebrations where the whole crew can join in for a relaxed, family-friendly celebration. They throw a lot of parties and festivals in Thibodaux. If you want to get a sense of Cajun culture, great food, music, and the Mardi Gras festivities, try the Louisiana Gumbo Festival in October and the Cajun Heritage Festival in June, or come every weekend—you’re bound to find a celebration around here!

If you want to escape it all and enjoy fantastic regional food, pristine nature, and friendly people, head South to Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou. I’ll be back in Lafourche Parish because there’s so much more to see and do here—a long weekend isn’t enough time to do it all. We hope you’ll let  Wander With Wonder be your guide when you’re planning your trip to Louisiana or exploring other great culinary destinations .

Taking a swamp tour during the day is one thing, but experiencing the swamps at night is a whole new ball game. This sunset paddle tour in Louisiana is picture-perfect from start to finish, and it’s the perfect time of year to jump in a canoe and spend a few hours on the water. No experience necessary!

If you love Louisiana’s natural scenery in the daylight, then you’ll love this sunset swamp tour by Canoe & Trail Adventures.

For the sunset and moonlight tours, you’ll meet at fontainebleau state park., the moonlight paddles are scheduled on the saturday on or before the full moon. the sunset paddles don’t follow a lunar schedule, so you can book those more frequently., no experience is necessary for these paddle tours. in fact, they’re very beginner-friendly, watching the sunset over the water from your kayak or canoe is a memorable experience., after the sunset, you'll paddle back to the starting point under the moonlight..

Visit the Canoe & Trail website to book your tour today, and be sure to follow Canoe & Trail on Facebook so you can stay up to date on upcoming tours. If you’ve taken this moonlight or sunset paddle tour in Louisiana, share your experience with us in the comments!

Unkempt ZZ rude

We went on Zam's Swamp Tour and it was quite disappointed. The cute little boy from Trading Spouses is no longer cute. He is 15, sarcastic, and told us to hurry up. The wharf on the front of the building is falling off. The place where you tour to see caged alligators and turtles was unkempt. There was trash all over and a bunch of cars and trailers that looked abandoned. There was a toothless man there that stared at my teenage daughte. i would recommend Thorres Swamp Tours they are much nicer and cleaner.

Loved this trip. We had an afternoon to kill so looked this place up on the GPS and were very happy we did. Diego was our tour guide and he was very calm and reserved at first and excellent in explaining the life cycle of a gator and their habits. The pre-tour of their hatchary and mini-zoo was great. We held baby gators and got to sea one monster gator up close. The boat ride was fun and Diego was quick to tell us about the local culture and how to hunt, trap and cook a gator. Also he told us how entire familys claim an area of land for gator hunting for generations. We had a good time listening to Diego's stories from when he was on "Trading Spouses" where he swapped families with a neo-hippy vegan from California. Unfortunately we went in the off-season so the restaurant was not open during the week.

I am from Thibodaux, LA which is adjacent to Kraemer, but currently live in MS. My husbands family was visiting from overseas and I thought it would be nice to show them a different view of the US and share with them some of my heritage. Torres Swamp tours was my first choice but their times out didn't match up with our schedule so I chose Zam's. I know of Torres swamp tours and know they do an EXCELLENT job. Zam's was great. The people are so incredibly nice, down home and gracious - just like South Louisiana people are. My family had an excellent time and thoroughly enjoyed the trip in Bayou Beouf, meeting the local folks, and playing with the snakes and alligators. Oh yeah - they even had a roo-ga-roo still out from Halloween. That was great fun too! Oh, how I miss Cajun Country! If you are going on a tour, Zam's is great and Torres is too. This is authentic and not commercialized (except for the gift shop.)

Huge waste of money. We also were tours by the son who is now 14. Full of sarcasm and attitude. Twice he said, "look, a bird", but that was it. No gators, not his fault, but also no info on the trees or other wildlife. This outfit also costs twice as much as another nearby company who's tours are much more informative. If you're going to do a swamp tour in Cajun country, go to Torres swamp tours and you will get your money worth and actually learn something.

My sister and I went on this swap tour and really enjoyed it. Our guide (Lloyd) was extremely knowledgeable which enhanced our adventure a great deal as we not only saw the bayou with out own eyes, but also learned about the daily lives of the local people, including their traditions and customs. - They do not live like people in New York or Los Angeles do, but in many ways their lives are so much richer as they truly enjoy each day, no matter what it brings. I would really recommend this tour, and plan to go back there myself in a year or two.

Wife and I stayed in bayou country for a couple nights on the way back home (big roadtrip). We saw that there were several "swamp tours" offered in the area and decided to try Zam's. Well, we weren't dissapointed. First, you arrive and it's right out of some movie, gator heads, skins everywhere. French/Cajun accents galore....then the big surprise was the folks were busy so they had their 12 year old son take us out on the boat! At first this concerned me, but later it was what truly made the trip down into the swamp more memorable! This young man was a RIOT! He had stories to tell, he showed us several alligators and even jumped OUT of the boat on a couple occasions to try to catch a couple smaller ones! He did an outstanding job of entertaining us! I think there are probably "bigger and better" swamp tour outfits out there...but go to Zam's! It's out in the middle of TRUE swamp/bayou country and it's a real taste of the deep south! Reasonable rates and just plain FUN!! Go! Enjoy!

“INCREDIBLE!!!” Took my family of 5. my kids are 10, 7, 5. WE LOVED IT!!! Greg was our guide and he was incredible. my kids were wanting to do it again the next day. my oldest wants us to take him back for his birthday. We were in NOLA for vacation. We will definitely be doing it again the next time we come back. It is a must for anyone going to NOLA. Visited April 2017

By far the best part of my time in LA. Very much considering driving the 15 hours back here again for just a weekend this summer...it was that good. Our guide Jeremy was super cool. Very informative, passionate and funny. He respects the wildlife and works great with it...even caught us a small gator to see/hold! Amazing driver, reaching speeds around 40mph but never made me feel uncomfortable. I learned a lot and had a great time. Oh, and because it was a colder day (mid 50s) they gave us jackets, pants, blankets and gloves to keep comfortable. Very awesome. You're missing out if you chose a different place.

Best airboat tour yet. Great people. Fun. Entertaining. Informative. Educational. Highly recommend.
