Facebook Headquarters Tour: Visiting the Happiest Place in Tech

One of my closest friends, Kim (who travels with me some), now works for Facebook. At the time it was still a brand new job for her and she needed to go out to the main campus in Menlo Park for training. She mentioned she would probably go that fall and invited me along.

Seeing as though I was already traveling for most of October, I didn’t think it was going to work. However, the dates turned out to be a couple of days after I got home from Iceland and about four days before I left for Dallas . That wasn’t going to work…or was it?

Sometimes you do what you have to do to capitalize on experiences you may never again get the opportunity to do. Kim had no idea when or if she would have a need to return to the main campus so my Facebook headquarters tour was either now or possibly never. Psshh…adding two more hours to the jet lag difference wasn’t going to matter that much, right? Especially when the hotel and car are already provided for Kim by Facebook. I’m a bonus! 😉

And, just like that, I booked my flight, ignored the fact that my travel dates for October grossly outweighed the days I would be home and told Kim I was on board! Not many people get this opportunity and who needs sleep anyway?

Now that I have been a bit dramatic in the re-telling of my decision making, I should mention that there is no Facebook headquarters tour open to the public. Facebook doesn’t offer them and you can’t walk through campus without knowing an employee who is willing to guide you the entire time. And no, sauntering in hoping you’ll get lucky by asking for an exception isn’t going to work.

While you can’t tour Facebook without knowing someone on the inside, you can take a photo with its famous sign! I love the address!

Arrival and Check-In at Classic Campus

We arrived at the Classic Campus and entered Building 10 early since thankfully, we didn’t have any traffic issues in transit from the hotel . Kim had already given my name to Facebook a while back to let them know I was coming.

They verified my ID, checked me in on an iPad and the next thing I know I had my temporary Facebook permit around my neck on a lanyard. It was super easy!

First Impressions

Facebook is anything BUT your typical corporate headquarters. It straight up reminded me of Disneyland honestly. Its very colorful, happy vibe looked a lot like walking down Main Street in Disneyland without all the people.

If I remember correctly, it’s designed to look like the streets of Palo Alto and having visited Palo Alto (on this same trip), I would agree that it does!

We were so early that breakfast hadn’t started yet so we stopped in at Philz Coffee for coffee and hot chocolate while we waited for breakfast to open.

The trees cover a lot of it but EPIC is painted on the cafe

Finally, breakfast was served at Cafe Epic, the main cafe on campus.

It is gigantic. This is just part of the serving area. I won’t get into how much seating the cafe has because it went on for ages.

And let’s talk about the timing of breakfast for a second.

I thoroughly love that breakfast in this workplace is served later from 8-10am. If you don’t like to eat early in the morning ( 🙋‍♀️), then you can eat after getting a little work done.

They accommodate all diets including vegetarian, vegan and there’s a juice bar too. There were even vegan tater tots which as you can tell I took full advantage of even though I’m not vegan. They tasted the same as nonvegan tots-yummy!

My breakfast buffet included French toast with vegan syrup, eggs, fruit, maple chicken sausage, vegan tater tots, and freshly squeezed OJ!

That freshly squeezed OJ I had? I know that’s a popular term, but this really was just the juice from the orange squeezed into a glass. No other additives. It was amazingly fantastic and reminded me of the freshly squeezed OJ I had all over Morocco !

Welcome to Facebook

Full and happy from a fantastic breakfast, we ventured out and came upon Hacker Square, the main square where movies, parties and even Q&A sessions by Mark Zuckerberg himself are held. Interesting name, isn’t it? I will explain that in a minute but first look closely at this photo.

See the dark gray concrete squares? Those spell out HACK in letters so big you can see them on a satellite view from Google Maps! The one in this picture is the “H”.

Now look on the ground just above the H. Right below the red columns (or in front of depending on how you visualize) is a series of nine dark gray stripes. Those will be important below so keep reading!

I visited in the month of October. Facebook calls it “Hacktober” as it is the name of their annual campaign designed to maintain a security-conscious culture. The campaign runs the entire month and includes everything from phishing tests to contests and workshops.

Okay so back to Hacker Square. As you saw previously, there is “The Hacker Company” at the top of the one building. Here inside this building, there is “Hack” followed by motivational snippets.

Hacker Square, Hacker Company, Hack spelled out in large concrete squares on the ground. What is with all the Hacker stuff?

Well, Mark Zuckerberg explains here how they use “the hacker way” at Facebook as a unique company management approach.

And, wondering about those nine dark gray stripes? They are a monument to the illegal crosswalk , an event that happened as a part of an overnight hackathon in 2007. It’s definitely an interesting read!

 Left: I like it. 👍 |   Right: I love it! ❤️

Keep in mind that although this campus does have visitors, it is not open to the public and was built to provide a positive work experience and atmosphere. Everywhere I looked there were fun things like this to do, places to express opinions or deep thoughts and an environment that promotes comfort. We saw many employees working outside at tables in the courtyard, sitting under trees, or working from the coffee shop and cafes!

Working from the Spa at Facebook

Bet you weren’t expecting that one were you? I knew ahead of time we would be visiting the on-campus spa at Facebook. They had booked Kim in for a pedicure as part of her visit. It’s only for employees though so while I couldn’t get one, they brought me back and let me sit in the massage chair next to her. That was what I needed anyway after flying across the Atlantic and then across the USA in 3 days’ time!

Oculus Demo

Thank you to the Facebook employee who took this photo because well, you try taking a good selfie in a VR headset! Right: Kim is better at it than me!

We were both booked into a demo of the latest Oculus. This was my first experience with virtual reality and it was pretty amazing. It had me thinking I was on top of a skyscraper about to fall off. Yes, I knew I was perfectly safe inside a building with a flat floor, but virtual reality makes you think real reality. I thought twice about each step I took and might have let out a tiny scream…or two…or three!

Crossing underground-you can walk or take one of the many bikes available on campus!

After Oculus, we decided to cross over to the Bayfront Campus to explore one of the newer kids on the block, Building MPK 20. Completed in 2015, there are lots of interesting facts about MPK 20. Designed by Frank Gehry, the architect behind designs such as Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, this 433,555 square foot two-story building has warehouse-style office space with parking below for 1,500!

Above the office space? Eh, no big deal…it’s just a nine-acre green roof! It only includes more than 350 trees and is home to hundreds of local birds. Inspired by the Highline in NYC, there are also work cabanas and cafes. As I said, no biggie!

What about sustainability? Check. The insulation of the green roof plus MPK 20’s energy systems combine to make it 25% more efficient than Title 24 which is California’s tough energy code. That is serious sustainability!

Kim had heard there was a great grilled cheese cafe called Fromage over at MPK 20 so we decided to have lunch there. Gracious, it had been a good five minutes since we’d had anything to eat because Facebook just doesn’t have many options. 😂

I put in my order for their classic grilled cheese, grabbed a bag of chips, and a drink out of the refrigerator and chowed down. Just like breakfast, lunch was quite satisfying!

We slowly made our way back to the Classic Campus but took a different path out of MPK 20. I’m so glad we did because otherwise, we would have missed this view…

and its beautiful art! Facebook has an A rtist I n R esidence program that focuses on integrating art in the workplace so that people don’t necessarily set it apart from its surroundings. It isn’t meant for the art to fade into the background but instead to become an essential part of the work environment.

The artists are encouraged to immerse in the culture and are allowed to explore the buildings, find where they want to display their art, and then are given an entire studio of resources to bring their artistic creation to life. While I’m sure the interview process (as with any hire at Facebook) is extremely selective, how cool is it to have that kind of freedom as an artist?

I wish I had known about the AIR while I was on campus so I could have figured out the artist who painted this. I fell in love with it and photographed it from all angles. We saw a lot of art on the main campus too but inside photography near office workspace wasn’t encouraged. However, you can read more on the AIR and see a photo tour of several of its creations .

Left: Ship Happens here | Right: Be aware of foxes

That’s right, folks. Ship happens here at Facebook. Wherever you need to send your Ship, they have you covered!

My favorite find? Learning there is a family of foxes that chose to raise their babies in the Zen garden on campus. As this article states , the foxes adopted approximately 2,500 proud parents into their skulk (what you call a group of foxes…who knew?) in the form of Facebook employees!

Facebook Swag

You better believe I took full advantage of all the Facebook and Instagram swag I could find. Kim had already gotten me a turquoise Instagram shirt. I bought another one in hot pink, a charcoal gray Instagram sweatshirt, a black Facebook shirt, a WhatsApp pen, and a “Facebook Like” magnet.

So, yes, if you’re keeping track, those are all blog colors! 🙌

I also got the cutest little kid’s Instagram and Facebook shirts for my nephew. Even though I purchased larger sizes, he will outgrow them soon and my sister is already begging me for new ones. The problem is they can only be bought from the store on campus. Since they are rare and unique to the public, I should have known she would love them and thought to buy several in much bigger sizes!

Whew, that concludes my Facebook headquarters tour. What a fantastic experience!! THANK YOU KIM!!

Hopefully, this gives you some insight into not only what a Facebook headquarters tour is like, but also the positive working environment that Facebook provides. Hence why I call it the happiest place in tech. Isn’t it amazing to think that this multi-billion dollar global company was started by a student on a college campus?

If you know someone who works for Facebook and they invite you to visit the main campus in Menlo Park, don’t think about it. Just do it. And, if you are one of the few who has had the opportunity for a Facebook headquarters tour, what was your favorite part?

‘Til next time…

Looks like such a fun and creative place to visit! Must have been surreal being with some of the greatest tech minds in the world 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

Hi Sam-It was definitely an interesting day. Cool to see what all goes on during a FB day! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Wow, I had no idea the Facebook campus was this cool of a place! I wish it was open to the public…I don’t know anyone who works there, but I’d love to see it!

You mentioned coffee at Philz…I LOVE ME SOME PHILZ! I’m in Chicago, and it’s finally making its way out here – yay!

Hi Jim-I knew it probably had some cool features, but I really had no idea just how cool and unique of a workplace it is. Not sure if they will ever open it up to the public or not. I actually wasn’t familiar with Philz (not a huge coffee drinker though) and I lived in LA for a few years. Thanks for reading! 🙂

This is just like my office except it’s nice. Seriously though, how cool is it that you got to write on Facebook’s wall. I would love to have seen some of the comments that were left.

Hi Ed-Haha! I know right? There were definitely some interesting ones I assure you! And if this is what your office is like, I want to tour it! 🙂 Thanks for reading! 🙂

Love that you got a Facebook tour. Years ago, Therese and I worked in Silicon Valley at an Internet startup. And while all the bells and whistles and bright colors and all the perks look really really cool, there is one often-overlooked and underlying message that still pervades at Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook … we are providing you all of these cool things so you don’t have to leave work because we expect you to work REALLY REALLY long hours. Looks like you had a grand time though.

Hi Michael-That is not one bit surprising to me honestly. Makes complete sense! From an outsider though, it looks cool and eats even better! Haha, thank for reading! 🙂

Now that’s a workplace with a difference. I could feel the happy vibe and I’m not even there physically. It was a great idea taking a tour of the FB headquarters. The restroom details are incredible…they thought of everything!

Hi Punita-It was definitely a happy vibe! And they did think of everything detail-wise, you’re right! Thanks for reading! 🙂

What an amazing insight into Facebook! This workplace doesn’t look like anywhere I’ve worked for sure, it doesn’t even look like somewhere people get work done. I liked to idea of the spa and ice team the most 😉

Hi Laura-It doesn’t look like anywhere I’ve worked before either, I assure you! The spa and the food were both definitely HUGE pluses! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Wow ! I still can’t believe you actually made it in ! The campus is really colourful like Disney, as you said ! For me, if I ever get to visit it, I would be most looking forward to the cafeteria ! I heard it is good varieties with quality ! Question, did you have to pay for your meals ? =p

Hi Jeremy-It is so like Disney, isn’t it?? I wish it was open to the public, but unless you know someone you can’t visit unfortunately. No, I didn’t have to pay for my meals. The only thing I had to pay for was any of the merchandise I bought! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Woah… what an incredible work environment! I wonder how distracted employees would get – hmmm- pedicure midday, please! So cool that you got to get an insiders tour. What an opportunity!

Hi Alison-I know, I’m not sure I would get any work done especially being allowed to do it wherever! Pedicures at lunch would be great…massage at the end of the day even better! It was definitely a fabulous opportunity. Thanks for reading! 🙂

Ha, Disneyland is a great way to describe it! Looks so colorful and fun. I’m sure the employees love working there.

Hi Carmen-They do enjoy working there and it shows! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Such a cool and interesting place to get the opportunity to see the inner workings of. It looks like such a fun place to work and I wish other companies would take a leaf out of their books and treat their workforce in a similar way, even more so for menial jobs really!! It must give the workers so much more moral!

Hi Nicola-I totally agree! Thanks for reading! 🙂

Do you know how I could arrange some sort of visit or appointment at the Facebook visitor center? I was a victim of ID theft and I lost my Facebook account as a result. I am unable to get back I to my account even after sending my ID to the security department. I am willing to fly to California to try to get my account back. It has so many photos from my past – which I cannot access anywhere else. I also want to make sure the hacker cannot use the account against me. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Sean-Unfortunately, I am unable to help as I am just like anyone else with a Facebook account. Also, Facebook doesn’t do visits or appointments of this nature or to the public in general. I’m so sorry to hear about your account, that is awful and I truly hope you are able to recover it. Thank you for reaching out and I wish I was able to answer differently!

How To Sell Tours and Activities with Facebook

Trifon Tsvetkov

Table of Content

Why should you use facebook to sell tours and activities, the best ways to reach your customers on facebook.

With over $40 billion in 2017 revenue, Facebook is much more than just a social networking platform.

But of course, you already know that. It’s been a long time since Facebook became a household name and, consequently, an important business platform.

More recently, the tech giant started to face strong competition, losing users to the likes of Instagram and WhatsApp (then bought them over).

Although there are signs of the consumer segment slowing down, the company is putting a big effort into tailoring its propositions for businesses.

With that, Facebook is constantly innovating and many “hidden” features exist that can help you sell more tours and activities – both online and offline.

In this post, we’re going to look at the best ways to utilize Facebook so you can get bookings from left, right and center.

Ready? Let’s go.

With Regiondo, you can integrate a complete ticket shop in your Facebook page . No account yet? Book a demo with us.

Okay, we know Facebook has a gazillion users and some of them earn lots of money. But what are some more unconventional reasons why you’d turn to Facebook for boosting your tour or activity sales?

Reach travelers at the right time and place

Travelers love Facebook. When they get to the airport, they have to check in three times:  first with the airline, secondly with customs and last (and most importantly) – with Facebook.

”Okay Mona Lisa, I’m on my way. Paris, I’ll be seeing you soon… and your little macaroons too.”

But the fun doesn’t stop at check-in. Along the way travelers love to share their journey by posting photos and statuses regularly. This is the perfect opportunity for people to learn about your brand – while they’re in your location and seeking out their next adventure.

Gain exposure on mobile

In January 2018, more than 90% of active Facebook users have accessed the site from their smartphone. This compares to just 31.8% for laptop/desktop and 8.8% for tablets.

facebook smartphone usage

Device usage of Facebook users worldwide as of January 2018 (by Statista).

This means that if you’re on Facebook, people are likely interacting with your company via mobile. That’s a great way to gain exposure among smartphone users, especially if you don’t have a mobile-optimized website.

Learn more about your customers

Apart from extra reach, advertising on Facebook comes with detailed statistics and information about your best customers. After running ads on their platform for a while, you’ll know the type of customer who is most likely to buy from you – including their location, age, interests and other attributes. This information can help you adjust your offers and bring them to the people who are most likely to buy from you.

facebook audience

A small part of the stats you can see about your customers.

Show up on the “search” radar

You can post all sorts of information about your business on Facebook – including your contact details, pricing and transport directions. This makes it easy for people to find you online, especially given that Facebook is a website with high authority. If people search for your brand on Google, your Facebook page is likely to pop-up as one of the first results on the page.

Get online even if you don’t have a website yet

As you can see, much of the information that you would normally post on your website is also relevant on Facebook. This makes it a great substitute until you get your online presence up and running.

So, contrary to popular belief, it makes sense to spend some time on Facebook. Now let’s look at what to do with that time.

Did you know with Facebook Ads you can target casual travelers, honeymooners, business travelers, road trippers, frequent travelers and just about any other target group you can think of?

Using Ad Targeting with Facebook Ads gives you the advantage of reaching travelers and locals who are looking for tours and activities in the area.

Fancy a cruise on the Thames?

What Is Ad Targeting?

As a tour provider, you’re already familiar with Facebook and know you can create a business page to connect with your customers, network within your industry and post content to showcase your offers.

But there’s more to Facebook that you may be missing out on if you’re not taking advantage of Ad Targeting. Ad Targeting is the magic behind Facebook Ads and helps to ensure you don’t miss your target audience each time you run a campaign. It allows you to customize your ads to target a specific group of your interest – which is why it’s so effective. By successfully reaching your target audience, Ad Targeting allows for a larger return on your investment – and we all love getting our money’s worth.

With Ad Targeting, you can get really specific and not only include a special audience, but you can also exclude certain people or groups. You can target people according to location, language, age, gender, interests, behaviors, and more.

Using Location Targeting

With Location Targeting, you can showcase your ads to a group of people in a specific area that you choose to target. Once you know where your visitors come from, you can specifically target a location by zip code, city, state or country, and run your ads to that demographic.

This means you can save time, money, and effort because you are only investing where it truly counts. You can also combine your location targets so that you mix up the right groups to meet your specific needs.

facebook company tour

Hitting Your Target: Travelers

With Ad Targeting, you can specifically target travelers. Facebook identifies a traveler by someone who has recently posted a status update on a mobile device in your destination, but whose home location is listed as more than 100 miles from your area. This is perfect for increasing your last-minute bookings. When travelers arrive in your area and are looking for something fun to do, they’ll see your ad if they fit your target.

Are you looking for honeymooners in your location wanting a couple’s massage? How about recent graduates doing their gap year abroad and seeking out adventurous activities like bungee jumping or skydiving ? Or maybe you’d like to target women, couples, or bachelorette parties looking for wine tours or cooking courses ?

Whatever your target audience is, you can reach all these groups and many more, with Ad Targeting.

Promote your content and offers

As the undisputed master of network effects, Facebook is one of the best places to share your content, giveaways and promotional offers. Spend some time crafting a good offer and you might just “go viral” like this Tasmania walking tour which got 594 entries for its Early Bird promotion.

Announce updates

When you acquire a good number of followers on Facebook, the platform becomes a great way to announce holiday changes and updates. Whether you’re hiring staff, changing your opening times or expanding in a new city, a simple post can reach thousands of locals within a few hours.

Provide customer service

People can send you messages directly from your Facebook page (if you enable the setting). That’s another chance for you to provide outstanding customer service. The live chat option lets you build trust with your customers, answer their questions and even accept bookings.

tour eiffel

Connect with your customers directly to answer questions and accept reservations.

Increase sales with the “Book Now” button

You can list all sorts of contact information on your Facebook page like your address and phone number. But what’s even better is the “Book Now” button.

This small detail leads people directly to your website or specific offers – you choose the destination. The “Book Now” button turns Facebook into a powerful distribution channel without charging you any commission fees.

Get free marketing with check-ins

Facebook’s location-based tagging can be a great way to get free advertising . Customers can tag themselves enjoying your tour or activity and this instantly pops up into their friends’ news feed. This way you can generate awareness without spending a dime. Consider adding some incentive for people to tag themselves, such as a small discount or free gift.

Apparently, people like to check-in.

Highlight your reviews as social proof

Apart from seeing which friends have visited, potential customers can see your reviews from strangers. You can even add your TripAdvisor reviews before you acquire a big enough following on Facebook.

reviews

This is obviously a “double-edged sword” so make sure you avoid negative reviews .

Show busy hours so people can book at a convenient time

As people share their smartphone location with Facebook, the platform can estimate how busy you are on any given day of the week. This information is available on your Facebook page so people can decide on the best time to book your tour or activity. In addition, it can help you with planning your resources, especially if you’re starting out (by looking at your competitors’ busiest times).

busy times

Tuesday morning it is!

Facebook is still the “big shot” when it comes to social media and we all know it’s a crucial selling tool. But there are some hidden features that you might not know about as the platform continues to release new business offerings.

Whether it’s through highly targeted advertising or simple promotions, the platform is sure to get your offers in front of the right people. Not only that, but you’ll also get to understand your customers better and boost your sales with Facebook’s tailored propositions for businesses.

5 Successful Travel Company Facebook Ad Examples

The first of our travel Facebook ad examples is TourRadar , a well-known online travel marketplace that specializes in multi-day tour group offerings. To boost conversions on their website they set up a campaign using Facebook travel ads and destination ads.

Results they achieved

The campaign was a great success, and over a twelve-month period they doubled their conversion rate and halved their cost per booking. Additionally, they reached over 1.2 million people with relevant ads every month.

Ad format used

How did they do it? They used carousel ads which provided tour headlines, gave prices, showed destination images, mentioned discounts, and had a call to action to showcase their tours to interested travelers who had browsed online but not booked.

To pack more punch, they also set up destination ads which used relevant images and product information to target people who had shown interest online in a destination. The goal here was to entice them to visit the TourRadar website. These ads were also directed to people who had viewed specific tours on their own website.

TourRadar targeted travelers who had already shown interest in a particular tour or destination with key information curated into one visually appealing ad. As a result of using their own first party data which they passed onto Facebook, they were able to fulfill the objectives of the campaign.

Trentino Marketing

Next on our list of success stories is Trentino Marketing . This public tourist board wanted to develop tourism in the very scenic Trentino in Italy. We’ve included them as one of our Facebook ad examples to show how they managed to raise awareness and reach new markets for the destination.

Campaign results

Their four-month Facebook advertising campaign saw a 4.2X year-on-year increase in holiday offers viewed, resulted in an 18.4% increase in organic search traffic on brand keywords after the campaign, and reached 13 million people across Europe and the US in that timeframe. Additionally, 1.5 million people viewed their videos adverts in full, indicating their relevance to the target group.

How did they do it

All of this was achieved using canvas with video ads and the carousel format. Canvas is an interactive media experience ad which encourages viewers to interact with it by swiping and clicking around to see it.

To kick off the campaign and grab travelers attention, Trentino used short eye-catching videos which encapsulated the scenery of the destination.

Next, they progressed to retargeting carousel ads to travelers who had either watched the video for a certain amount of time or who had clicked through to their website. These ads showcased the four different types of holidays travelers could to choose from.

Lastly, they set up five different travel Facebook ad examples in three different languages to take the final step and push conversions.

Ultimately the combination of ad formats captured travelers attention and drove people to the Trentino Marketing website. Furthermore, they helped raise the visibility of both the company as well as the destination on search engines.

Meliá Hotels International

As one of the best Facebook ad examples showcasing how dynamic ads for travel can be successfully used to target a broad audience and find new customers, we have selected  Melia Hotels International success story.

Their success story

The Spanish Hotel chain wanted to target new customers in the UK and drive down the cost per booking compared to their previous UK ad campaigns.

This time they managed to secure a 3.2X lower cost per booking, as well as a 2.8X higher return on ad spend compared to previous campaigns.

Ad solution

Melia Hotels had previously used dynamic ads for travel and been successful with it. However, they wanted to find a way to continuously draw-in new customers from around the world. This led them to try out the ad format using a broad audience target.

They ran their dynamic ads for travel with a broad audience target for one month and delivered them to people in the UK who had travel plans to a specific destination. The ads were customized to each individual, displaying a hotel in a specific destination that was likely to suit their needs.

Why they were a hit

After the trial run had achieved impressive results, Melia setup similar campaigns to run for all of its’ global markets. The very relevant and personally tailored experience that these Facebook ad examples delivered to their target audience made the campaign a huge success for the company.

Now we will take a look at an example of how Facebook ads for travel companies generated interest in El Al's flight fares and improved their click-through rate over a period of five months.

Campaign goals

The Israeli airline wanted to promote special fares and new routes, as well as increase flight searches on its’ website. Ultimately they achieved 5X more flight searches, had a 25% higher click-through rate, and 50% lower cost per flight search than previous campaigns using Facebook ad examples.

Products used

Using Facebook ads for retargeting with a website conversion ad objective, Fialkov Digital put together a campaign that saw El Al retarget travelers who had browsed flights within the last 21 days but not yet booked. The campaign featured ads showing the exact routes people had searched, and appeared across Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, they linked to flight auction site bid2fly to give travelers an even more attractive incentive to book.

Winning all the way

Because the Facebook pixel gives you the power to target a highly relevant audience, El Al was able to match their product with interested travelers. With a prominent CTA, their click-through rate shot up and their website views increased greatly.

Travel Department

To end off our list of Facebook ad examples that travel companies have successfully used to promote their business, we will examine a case study on Travel Department . This holiday company wanted to try out a new way of advertising, as well as boost awareness and sales.

Results of their campaign

They too worked with an agency, Wolfgang Digital. A three-phase campaign was put together and run for three months. Their video ads saw a 27X return on spend, the dynamic and slideshow ads saw a 30X return, while the dynamic ads saw a 131X return.

Formats used

To start with, they used video ads to showcase the stunning destinations and describe their expert services.

In the second phase, they retargeted carousel and slideshow ads to people who had interacted with videos from phase one of the campaign. Carousel ads allowed them to showcase up to ten destinations in one space, and the slideshow ads have almost the same effect of video ads without the related costs.

In the final phase, they used dynamic ads with the Facebook pixel to retarget travelers who had viewed products on the site or added to their basket without completing checkout.

The end story

Again, the various ad formats provided Travel Department with the opportunity to reach a wide audience. They were then able to narrow their audience down to those who expressed interest in their product and successfully target them with relevant ads.

Did you know consumers are more likely to buy from a brand they follow on Facebook than Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and Reddit combined?

Are Facebook Ads worth it?

Facebook allows businesses to create targeted ads that can reach travelers at the right point in their buying journey. No other marketing platform allows you to zero in on an audience with such precision.

Facebook also owns Instagram and Whatsapp, allowing you to cross-promote your ads on these platforms . Most people are finding travel inspiration on Facebook and Instagram. They’re saving photos of destinations they want to visit and the activities they want to do when they’re there.

This makes Facebook and Instagram ideal for tour operators because you can promote your tours and activities to an audience that’s actively looking for them.

If you’ve never set up a Facebook campaign, it’s time to create one. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to launch your first Facebook ad.

Step 1: Set your goals

Before you create your Facebook ad, define exactly what you’re trying to achieve with it. Your goals might include:

  • Increasing traffic to your website
  • Generating new leads
  • Increasing bookings through your website
  • Getting more eyes on your Facebook content
  • Boosting engagement for your Facebook Page

Your ad structure, audience, budget, and duration will all depend on your objective.

Step 2: Open your Facebook Ads Manager

facebook ad setup 1

Go to your business’s Facebook page. On the left sidebar, head over to “Ad Center” and choose “All Ads” from the dropdown menu.

At the bottom of the page, click on “Ads Manager.” If you have access to more than one ad account, select the one you want to create an ad for.

facebook ad manager

You can also access your Ads Manager via https://www.facebook.com/ads/manager . Here you’ll be taken to an ad account for your personal Facebook page. Use the dropdown menu on the upper left hand side to choose your business’ ad account.

Step 3: Set your objective

facebook ad campaign objective

Hit the bright green “Create” button on the lefthand side of the page.

You’ll now be prompted to choose from a variety of different goals for your ad campaign:

  • Awareness: brand awareness and reach
  • Consideration: website traffic, customer engagement, video vides, and new customer leads
  • Conversion: bookings and traffic to your tour description pages

Select the one that best meets the marketing goal you set in step one.

Step 4: Name your campaign, ad set, and ad

img 63651a5fe24bb

Your campaign includes your ad’s objective and budget optimization.

Your ad set determines your audience, ad placements, schedule, and spending.

Your ad contains all of the creative and visual components for this particular ad.

Step 5: Define your campaign details

facebook campaign budget objective

Next, you’ll be taken to a page where you can define all your campaign details. Here you can A/B test your campaign, which means creating two different ads and testing them against each other.

You can also switch on a Facebook ad feature called “ Campaign Budget Optimization ” to get the most results possible from your campaign, at the lowest cost. You’ll set one overarching campaign budget and Google will automatically fund the ad sets that are performing best.

Step 6: Define your ad set, budget, and target audience

facebook budget setup

Next, you’ll create your ad set.

You’ll set a budget and schedule for your ad, including a start and end date. You’ll then choose between a “daily budget” — like $5 a day — or a “lifetime budget,” which is the total amount you want to spend on this ad.

facebook audience details

Your ad set also defines your target audience.

You can customize your audience by location, age, and gender, among other demographics. Under “Detailed Targeting,” you can even target specific interests and behaviors like “traveling.”

Under the “Connections” tab, you can include or exclude people who have liked your Facebook page. This will come in handy when setting up a retargeting ad, for example, so that your ad targets people who have already interacted with your page.

Finally, you’ll choose where you want your ad to be displayed. You can leave the ad placement up to Facebook or choose where you want to display it.

Step 7: Create your ad

It’s now time to create your ad. You can use an existing social media post or upload a new image, video, or graphic.

facebook ad setup

If you create a new one, you can choose from a few different formats:

  • Carousel: two or more scrollable images or videos
  • Image or Video: One single image or video, or a slideshow with multiple images
  • Collection: a group of items that opens into a fullscreen mobile experience

You can add your media and text in the “Ad Creative” section, and choose where you want to direct viewers under “Destination.” Your destination can be your website URL, for example.

You’ll choose the best call-to-action, such as a “Learn More” or “Book Now” button that’ll take users to your desired URL.

Finally, you’ll set up Facebook ad tracking so you can monitor your ad performance.

Step 8: Publish your ad

The final step is to hit “Publish.” Once you submit your ad, Facebook will review it before pushing it live. You’ll get an email from Facebook letting you know your ad was approved.

How do you choose the best audience size + targeting for Facebook ads?

Choosing the right audience is key for a successful Facebook campaign.

You’ll be prompted to determine your audience when creating your ad set, which also defines your ad placements, schedule, and budget.

Facebook allows you to target a very specific audience based on location, age, gender, interests, and behavior. As you narrow down your specifications, you’ll notice that your audience size will change.

Facebook recommends keeping your audience between 1,000 and 50,000 people .

When you narrow down your audience, your ads are more likely to reach more people. Narrowing down your audience to people who are traveling to your location, for example, would increase your ad’s reach because those people are likely to stop and look at your ad.

Reach is an important metric that measures the number of unique people that have viewed your ad.

Your target audience will largely depend on your location and the nature of your tour or activity.

There are several ways to target travelers specifically. When defining your ad set, you can target people who are specifically traveling in your location. You can also narrow down your audience by interests and behaviors — such as “frequent travelers” or people who “like” a particular activity like hiking.

You can also target people who are similar to those who currently like your Facebook page, meaning Facebook will identify users who are likelier to become fans of your business.

You can approach your ad’s target audience in two ways.

Targeting a cold audience means showing your ad to potential customers that have never heard of your company. You’ll use Facebook’s targeting features to narrow it down based on interests and behaviors.

Retargeting , on the other hand, reaches an audience that’s already familiar with your brand. Your ads would reach people who have already engaged with your business, such as visited your website or liked your Facebook page.

This is a warmer audience that already knows of your business, meaning they’re likelier to make a purchase.

If your company is new, however, you may not have a large enough online audience to retarget. In this case, cold ads would help introduce your brand to more people and establish a larger audience.

retargeting

Retargeting ads are shown to people who have already expressed interest or engaged with your company online.

First, you’ll need to install a Facebook pixel on your company website. The Facebook pixel is an analytics tool that gets installed in the code of your website. It helps you track visitor activity and the results of your Facebook ads.

Go to your Events Manager page to create one.

Click on “Connect Data Sources” and choose “Web.”

facebook pixel

Next, you should choose “Facebook Pixel.”

Once you name your pixel, you’ll add in your website URL for easy setup options. If you can use a partner integration, follow those instructions. For example, if your website is set up on WordPress, you’ll download a plugin that’ll install the pixel for you.

facebook pixel 2

You can also manually add the pixel to your site by copying the pixel base code and pasting it into the header of your website.

facebook pixel for wordpress sites

Next, you’ll set up events using Facebook’s events setup tool. Add in your URL and follow the instructions to identify events to track on your page, such as every time someone views a tour page or clicks the “book now” button.

facebook custom audiences

You can also specifically retarget people from your email list. To do this, you’ll make a “Custom Audience” in your Ads Manager.

Open your ad account, go to “Audiences,” then choose “Create Audience > Custom Audience > Customer List.”

customer list in facebook

Your customer list will be your email list, which you’ll export from your email marketing software. You’ll upload your email list and select identifiers to include, which in this case will be your customer email, name, and anything else that’ll help Facebook find your contacts.

Facebook will match its users with the information you’re provided, and you can then retarget your email subscribers with ads.

How to create targeted Facebook ads for tours and activities

Before creating a new Facebook campaign, you need to define your objectives. You could use the SMART system to ensure your goals make sense.

SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Sensitive. You define exactly what you want to achieve, the metrics you’ll track, and the methods you’ll use to achieve those goals. You should also set a timeline for when you expect to achieve that goal.

Let’s see how escape room, zipline, and axe-throwing operators put this into practice. Here are a few examples from operators using Facebook ads to bring in more exposure and bookings.

Escape Rooms

escape room ad

Facebook marketing is an effective way to fill your escape rooms . When setting up your Facebook ads for escape rooms, you’ll want to choose an objective like “Conversions” if you’re trying to drive more bookings. Next, you’ll need to set up your audience.

If you have a limited budget but your website gets more than a few thousand monthly visitors, we recommend starting with retargeting ads. Your ads will be visible to people who have already shown interest in your escape rooms and are therefore likelier to book an experience.

You can retarget your email list and website visitors, for example.

On the other hand, if you have a smaller social media marketing budget and significantly less website traffic, a cold traffic campaign could bring in more results.

Ziplines

ziplines ad

Zipline tour operators can use Facebook ads to target several potential customers.

Your ads can target people traveling in your location by specifying that in Facebook’s advanced targeting options. You could also target people who are similar to your past guests by using Facebook’s Lookalike Audiences, which will automatically build an audience that has similar interests as your past customers.

To create a Lookalike Audience, you need to create a list of past customers on Facebook. You can do this by uploading a list of customer names and emails, or if you use a zip line booking software like Xola , you can create lists automatically using Facebook’s tracking pixel.

Axe Throwing

axe throwing ad

Axe throwing operators should start with Facebook retargeting ads to reach people who have visited your website but not made a booking. Follow the steps outlined above to install your Facebook pixel to do so.

You should also target your email list to convert one-time customers into repeat guests.

Your ads should always have a strong visual component to catch viewers’ attention, such as highlighting photos and videos of your customers shown in the example above.

Outdoor Adventure Tours and Activities

You don’t want to appeal to any traveler, but rather outdoor adventure travelers specifically.

You should use Facebook’s advanced targeting features to create an audience interested in general topics like “nature,” or more specific activities like “hiking,” for example.

In the Royal Gorge tour operator’s case, the ad is likely targeting people interested in rafting and ziplining. You could also create a Lookalike Audience where Facebook will target viewers who are similar to your current customers.

How much should I spend on Facebook ads?

A typical marketing budget for any business is 5% to 12% of revenue . New companies might spend a bit more since they’re still trying to get their name out there and establish brand awareness.

That being said, there’s no magic number for how much you should spend on Facebook ads for tours. Ultimately it’ll depend on your goals and business revenue.

Consider that the Facebook ad cost for most industries is somewhere between $0.50 and $2.00 per click . For travel specifically, it’s about $0.63.

Knowing this, you can create a budget by defining your goals and determining how many leads you’ll need, what your cost per core event will be , and how much you can afford to spend to make a booking.

Once you settle on an overall Facebook budget, it should be distributed into three categories :

  • 20% for audience building
  • 20% for retargeting your audience
  • 60% for promotional offers

When building your ad, you’ll be prompted to set a daily budget (how much you’re willing to spend on a campaign each day) or a lifetime budget (how much you’re willing to spend throughout the entire campaign).

The minimum ad spend on Facebook is $1 per day, and the more you spend, the more people will see your ad.

AdEspresso recommends starting with a small ad spend across a few days to see how well different ad sets perform. After five days or so you should have an idea of which ads are working for you. Then you can ramp up your budget for those ads specifically. Hootsuite explains exactly how it would spend $100 on Facebook ads if you’re working with a small budget.

Facebook Ad campaign examples

Whether you’re experimenting with video ads or carousel posts, there are a few components you simply can’t skip: Your ads should highlight what makes your tours or activities unique, target the right audience, and have a clear call to action horse-drawn.

Let’s see how tour and activity operators put this into action. Here are some creative examples of Facebook and Instagram ads to inspire you.

Launch a new location

axe throwing ad 1

Mississippi-based Skål Axe Throwing uses Facebook ads to announce its expansion to a new state. In this particular case, the activity operator uses a personalized video ad to introduce his company to a new audience in Louisiana.

Skål is likely using Facebook’s targeting features to reach an audience located in Covington, where the company will open its new axe-throwing attraction .

Video can drive more engagement than standalone images, especially when featuring members of your company. Featuring owner Daniel McNatt himself announcing the opening is an effective way to connect with a new audience. Potential new customers will put a face to the company and become familiar with the people behind the grand opening.

Promote a new tour or experience

facebook company tour

Raise a Glass Tours , a Michigan-based tour operator offering wine and beer experiences, also uses a Facebook ad to announce a business update.

In this case, Raise a Glass is promoting the beginning of a new tour in Michigan. What does Raise a Glass do well in this ad?

Aside from featuring a great visual, the ad particularly highlights what’s most unique about the experience: the first and only upscale beer tour. The tour operator aims to appeal to an audience looking for an elevated beer experience that’s differentiated from others. This is where knowing your audience comes in handy.

Share a behind-the-scenes perspective

facebook company tour

Kayak, Bike & Brew runs a unique brewery tour that features kayaking and biking in Traverse City, Michigan.

Their Facebook ad does a phenomenal job explaining how the tour works and what guests can expect. A company employee narrates the video, which goes over each stop guests can expect on the tour.

The video follows actual guests having a great time on tour, which already has a positive effect on the viewer. It’s then edited in a fun way with a lot of quirky transitions. The ad does a wonderful job conveying the overall fun and playfulness of the tour — and the company behind it.

Promote any awards you’ve won

awards ad example

Have you recently won an award? Are you the top-rated tour in your region? Charleston-based tour operator Old South Carriage used its high rating on TripAdvisor as a hook in a recent ad for its horsedrawn carriages.

The tour operator created a graphic that aligned with its brand colors to advertise this achievement. Reviews can have a big impact on bookings. A recent TripAdvisor survey found that 72% of the respondents read reviews before deciding on things to do.

Highlighting positive reviews, awards, or rankings in your Facebook ads is a smart way to hook potential customers in.

Advertise to locals

Denver Adventures

Colorado-based zipline operator Denver Adventures uses the ad above to persuade people visiting the city of Denver to explore the outdoors.

The activity operator points out that visitors can reach the Rocky Mountains in just 30 minutes on a variety of guided tours — for someone who’s never visited, this takes the hassle out of figuring out how to explore the park alone.

Denver Adventures also uses images of outdoor adventures to directly appeal to that audience.

Split-test your ad copy and creatives

split test ad

Tour operator G Adventures creates several different ads within one format by switching up the images and calls-to-action, as shown in the examples above. This is a smart way to see what destinations are appealing most to your audience.

After running both of the above ads for a week or so, G Adventures will know what destination is garnering the most clicks and conversions. Tour and activity operators can try this with their different experiences to get a feel for what’s more in demand in your region.

Now that you’ve had a look at some creative examples of Facebook ads, it’s time to start working on your own.

Remember that all ads should highlight what’s unique about your tour, target a specific audience, and have a clear call-to-action.

You should experiment with video, carousel, graphics, and single image ads to see what resonates with your audience the most. It might take some trial and error, but by starting today, you’re one step closer to acing your Facebook marketing.

In addition, Facebook’s targeting features allows tour operators to promote their tours to the people who are most likely to book them — including people traveling in your location or past website visitors.

If you haven’t started advertising on Facebook or Instagram yet, now is the time to do so. Use this guide to set up your first Facebook travel ad.

Creating a winning Facebook Business Page for tours & activities

Setting up a Facebook business page for tour operators

By Rezdy — 25 Aug 2015

facebook   marketing   social media   tour operator

Updated October 2023 – As one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, Facebook holds great potential for your organization to promote its tours and activities.

What is a Facebook Business Page and why should tour operators have one?

A Facebook business page is an efficient method of utilizing social media marketing for tour companies. In the modern world, it is increasingly important for tour operators to have a presence on the social platform, to increase company visibility and community engagement.

How to create a Facebook Business Page for tour operators

Creating a Facebook page is a simple and cost-effective way to expand the outreach of social media for tour companies. Consider the following elements when setting up a Facebook business page for tour operators.

How to create a Facebook business page for tour operators

When setting up your business account, make sure you have a recognizable profile picture and cover photo. At least one of these should contain the brand logo.

In the About section, include a summary of the product or service your company offers, alongside other relevant information like opening hours, location, and contact information.

Post regular content updates with engaging photos and videos of your company’s events or activities.

Optimizing your Facebook Business Page

Optimization helps your tour and travel Facebook page reach and engage with your business’ audience. Here are some simple steps to make sure your Facebook page is optimized as best as possible.

1. Make sure the details of your business are accurate and up-to-date

2. In Facebook’s categorization templates, select the type of organization you think best befits your business. For a tourism brand, you may wish to select ‘services’ or ‘business’

3. Engage with your community. Have a call to action to conclude your About section. Use hashtags in your content to drive engagement

4. Add as many page tabs as you feel necessary. Tabs you may wish to add include Reviews in order to allow customers to leave feedback, Events to see what your organization is hosting in the future, and Shop to let customers browse your offerings

5. Update and engage with your social media audience regularly. A Facebook page that has sporadic posts suggests a failing business. Likewise, a page that does not respond to its reviews suggests that the brand does not value customer relationships

Promoting your Facebook Business Page

Targeted promotion is an important component of how to sell tours and activities with Facebook. Below are four ways you may consider advertising your Facebook page to maximize growth .

facebook company tour

1. Use your existing network

Add a link to the page in your newsletter, or put up an advertising poster in your shop that displays your Facebook page

2. Utilize other social media channels

Instagram stories your YouTube Shorts are the perfect platform to place a link to your Facebook page, alongside a short explainer video. Your website should also have a ‘follow’ button, or perhaps an embedded Facebook section

3. Advertise your page on Facebook itself

Utilizing Facebook’s native advertising capabilities is a paid yet great strategy for expanding your page’s reach and engagement. It’s an ideal platform to promote exclusive giveaways, special offers, and engage a highly targeted audience. By customizing your ad campaigns, you can reach individuals who are most likely to be interested in your tours and activities. Additionally, use it to boost the visibility of engaging posts, re-engage with users who’ve shown interest, and leverage detailed analytics for data-driven decisions, enhancing your Facebook Business Page’s growth and overall impact on your business.

4. Try offline methods of advertising

Advertise your Facebook page at in-person events your company holds, or network with other businesses to promote your page. You may also incorporate a small advertisement for your page, such as the Facebook logo and your page name, on any merchandise your organization produces

They also provide updates on the different species of whales they spot on their tours, and whether they sighted any whale calves.

This allows customers to see exactly what they will be able to enjoy while on one of their unique whale watching tours. Oz Whale Watching also uses their platform to promote special events, such as New Year’s Eve experiences and the Boxing Day Sydney to Hobart race.

The company has enabled reviews on its Facebook page, and it averages 4.9 stars.

In addition, the page has an app that links to its TripAdvisor reviews as well as a “Book Now” app that allows visitors to instantly access the company’s real-time availability as well as book an upcoming tour.

Facebook Page 2: Go Sea Kayak

Go Sea Kayak is an activity provider in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Its Facebook profile has an astounding 19,000 likes, and this company knows how to engage its customers.

facebook company tour

One of the most appealing things about this Facebook page is the fact that interesting and compelling photographs are posted on a regular basis. Images of bright, turquoise oceans draw the viewer in and ensure they keep scrolling down the page.

Some of the photos show customers enjoying their kayaking adventure, which keeps current customers and past customers interacting with the page. These kinds of posts also allow customers to share the images they feature in with their Facebook friends, which in turn generates greater company awareness. Social media for tour operators also includes user-generated content, so it’s important to encourage users to share their experiences online.

Other photos show incredible shots of the wildlife in the area, such as dolphins swimming or whales breaching in front of a group of kayakers. They offer a small glimpse into what it would be like to experience their tours.

facebook company tour

In addition, the company regularly interacts with its customers and responds to many of the posts on their page. Responding to comments also allows you to maintain your company persona, and leave customers with positive memories of their experience.

Facebook Page 3: Dropbear Adventures

Dropbear Adventures offers 3-day eco-adventure tours of Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia.

The Facebook page itself is visually appealing, with a unique profile picture that identifies the brand and a high-resolution cover photo that draws the visitor to the page.

facebook company tour

It’s no surprise that the company has generated 4,200 likes. Dropbear Adventures uses its Facebook page to post breathtaking photos from its adventures that showcase the natural beauty of Fraser Island.

They also post unique promotions and contests that get their customers involved with their brand on a personal level. This engagement can be particularly necessary for a tour company that organizes tours spanning multiple days. If a customer will be spending a longer amount of time with their tour operator, then chances are they will use social media to determine whether the management is personable.
