Pokey LaFarge - New album 'Rhumba Country' out 10 May - First single + video out now - UK/Ireland tour in August

Pokey LaFarge will return with new album ' Rhumba Country ' on 10th May 2024 via New West Records. The 10–song set was co-produced by Chris Seefried, Elliot Bergman, and LaFarge and was recorded in Los Angeles, CA & Chicago, IL. On 'Rhumba Country', he reveals his newly heightened devotion to making music that channels pure joy. He says, “There was a time when I glorified sadness because I lost sight of who I was, but now I understand that creating and expressing joy is my gift, and gifts are meant to be shared.” Reclaiming his voice, LaFarge has recorded his boldest album yet.   

After crisscrossing the nation for the last half-decade looking for a home, LaFarge found himself in Mid-Coast Maine. Upon arriving, the Illinois-born singer/songwriter/actor pursued a major life change, working 12-hour days on a local farm—a turn of events that catalyzed an extraordinary burst of creativity and redefined his sense of purpose as an artist. As he immersed himself in the album’s creation, LaFarge began dreaming up a kaleidoscopic sound informed by his love of music from far-ranging eras and corners of the globe, including mambo, tropicalia, rocksteady, and mid-century American rock-and-roll. He pares his songs down to the essential throughout the album, ornamenting each track with subtle details and showcasing his distinct voice and ineffable charisma.  

His boundless curiosity for music from other cultures was vital in shaping the album’s captivating sound. “Listening to a lot of music from around the world helped simplify my approach,” he notes, naming Brazilian singer/composer Jorge Ben among his key inspirations. “The more you listen to music from around the world, you realize everybody’s got their form of country music,” he says. “It goes back to why I named the album Rhumba Country in the first place: it’s poking fun at the futility of boxing everything into a few genres, ‘What is folk music? What is country or soul?’ I’ve always bucked at all those boundaries and found it much more exciting to create my own genre.”  

Today he shares ' Sister André ', the album’s first single. LaFarge said, “Sister André is a love song for those who are lonely and looking and waiting to love and be loved. An encouragement to never give up the patient pursuit. It could come at any time! Encouragement, in this case, comes from Sister Andre, who inspired this song the day of her passing after 118 years of age.”

Pokey LaFarge also announced his initial UK tour dates in support of Rhumba Country. See tour dates below, with many more to be announced.  

In addition to his acclaimed music career, Pokey LaFarge is also an actor as well. He appeared in 2013's The Lone Ranger (starring Johnny Depp), The Devil All The Time (starring Tom Holland and produced by Randall Poster & Jake Gyllenhaal), and played Hank Snow in CMT's series Sun Records . He also stars in the forthcoming O'Dessa (currently in post-production and stars Sadie Sink of Stranger Things fame).  

'Rhumba Country' is an invitation to come together to celebrate life and love. “The songs that naturally come to me are upbeat and make you wanna dance or at least bop your head—they’re all very colorful,” says LaFarge. “I used to think of my music in dark blue, but now I see it in technicolor.”  

Pokey LaFarge’s Rhumba Country will be available across digital platforms, on compact disc, and standard black vinyl. Limited Gold vinyl and compact disc editions both autographed by Pokey LaFarge, will be available via Independent Retailers and are available for pre-order NOW via NEW WEST RECORDS.

Review: Pokey LaFarge brings his live show to Cambridge

Coming out to a fantastic reception from a packed out J2, charismatic American singer-songwriter Pokey LaFarge, whose electrifying music encompasses everything from rock ‘n’ roll to country , from Latin to jazz , looked every inch the star in a well-fitted light brown suit, while the rest of his four-piece band (keyboard player, guitarist, drummer, stand-up bass player) all wore matching blue suits.

After exciting opening number, Get It ’Fore It’s Gone , off his latest album, 2021’s In the Blossom of Their Shade , Pokey announced that he was delighted to be back in the UK, noting that it’s been four years since he was last over here. He later revealed that before the pandemic, he spent 10 years regularly touring the UK. It was certainly great to see him back, a feeling further enhanced by the insanely-catchy second song, Fine to Me .

The singer, a magnetic performer with an impressive vocal range (I particularly liked it when he sang falsetto), said that he and the band had only arrived in the UK the night before, stating that they were still suffering from jet lag - you wouldn’t have guessed it, though, from the energetic performances of Rotterdam and End of My Rope .

On the Latin-tinged To Love or Be Alone , guitarist Erik Miron unexpectedly brought out a small trumpet and began playing it, drawing a fervent response. He subsequently played it on other songs throughout the evening. I felt it, as well as his guitar, should have been louder at times, though, especially when he was playing slide guitar.

Wanna Be Your Man had a lovely vintage ‘ragtime’ feel to it, while Something in the Water, one of Pokey’s best-known tunes and the title of his 2015 album, resulted in much merriment, dancing and the holding aloft of phones recording the action - more so than at any other point in the evening.

The sublime all-round entertainer expertly crooned his way through the moody Lucky Sometimes and then brought singer and dancer Addie Hamilton, who also happens to be his fiancée, out onto the stage for the uptempo Bluebird , a song Pokey said was written about her.

Hamilton remained on stage with the band for the rest of the evening, livening up the proceedings with her infectious singing and dancing. Pokey encouraged the audience to turn to the person next to them and introduce themselves - “Who knows, you may fall in love,” he said - but needless to say, very few people did so. This is England after all!

At the start of the encore, Pokey alluded to the fact they were in “lovely England”, which initially drew a muted response (the crowd were more enthusiastic second time around), and introduced the jazzy What the Rain Will Bring .

He and Addie got the fans singing, as they had done previously, on the call-and-response Don’t Let It Go and brought the proceedings to a close with the gorgeous, 50s-esque Goodnight, Goodbye (Hope Not Forever) .

You certainly get a wonderful evening of fun and excitement from Pokey and co (isn’t that what popular music is supposed to be about?) and the upcoming venues on his UK tour are in for a real treat!

About Pokey LaFarge

In March 2020, LaFarge packed up and left his Los Angeles abode behind, putting his belongings in storage in anticipation of spending extensive time on the road in support of his then-forthcoming album, Rock Bottom Rhapsody. He couldn’t wait to head down to Austin a few weeks later to showcase those songs and launch the album with his band at SXSW. Then the pandemic hit and all of LaFarge’s well-laid plans went into thin air. Stuck in East Austin with nowhere to go, LaFarge did what he does best: he got to work. He used the sudden change in plans to his advantage, having perhaps his greatest period of personal growth in the midst of the crippling pandemic. LaFarge offered, “This album is a result of my 2020 experience. Before the pandemic, I was in a dark place but the pandemic actually created the much needed space for me to reflect. Turns out that being completely sedentary for once was a good thing. I found peace in the stillness. I was able to recalibrate what it is I do and why I’m doing it. Who I’m to do it with and most importantly, who I’m doing it for.”

POKEY LAFARGE IN CONCERT: From his days as a nomadic busker to his current status as one of old-time music’s most respected guardians, roots revivalist Pokey LaFarge has remained a soulful and authentic live performer. LaFarge’s bluesy sound combines Americana, Western swing, Appalachian folk, and more, and his knowledge of and respect for these historic genres are on full display at his toe-tapping live shows. His swinging sets evoke the sounds of yesteryear with throwback instruments like kazoo, washboard, and lap steel guitar, treating fans to an unforgettable concert experience that’s the next best thing to a riverboat trip down the Mississippi. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Pokey LaFarge, aka Andrew Heissler, was born in Bloomington, IL, where he earned the nickname “Pokey” from his mother who would frequently implore him to hurry. He inherited both his love of American history and his penchant for fingerpicking instruments from his grandfathers, one of whom gave him his first banjo and guitar. After discovering the blues in his teens, he traded in his banjo for a mandolin and hitchhiked across the country to the West Coast. There, he released two solo albums as Pokey LaFarge in the late ‘00s before forming a band and releasing 2010’s Riverboat Soul. The album was a critical hit, earning an Independent Music Award for Best Americana Album and drawing the group out for extensive touring. Their next album, 2011’s Middle of Everywhere, won the same award the following year, cementing LaFarge’s place as one of Americana’s most promising young talents. Since then the group has toured with Jack White, released a 2013 self-titled album, and wowed ticket buyers with their period-perfect sound at major festivals around the world.

I have wanted to see Pokey (aka Andrew Heissler) ever since hearing his music on the radio about ten years ago, I think courtesy of Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 6. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that his limited UK tour dates included my local venue, the Cambridge Junction.

Better still it was in J2, The Junction’s smaller but vastly superior venue space (unless you want to slip around on red stripe to drum n bass coming from a terrible sound system, in which case J1 is the place for you).

Sadly, however, there was a certain tiredness to the band, as though they had just got off a plane. Which they indeed had: It was the first night of the tour. Lesson learned: Avoid the first night of a tour if at all possible.

Nevertheless it was a decent set, a good mixture of tracks from the latest album (which I didn’t know) and some classics such as Something in the Water , and my personal favourite Central Time .

Pokey’s style is oldtime banjo-laden southern country folk blues. There’s a slight comic edge to his voice, playing and performance that always reminds me of George Formby. He even looks as though they might be not so distant cousins.

The song includes a personal video diary shot on Super 8 through the Netherlands, Italy, England, France, California, and Maine. LaFarge says, “ Captured over six years, this is a world travel journal of my wife, Addie Hamilton, and I from when we were dating to when we were engaged and culminating in the celebration that was our wedding”.

LaFarge previously shared the album’s first single, ‘ Sister Andre ‘ . He said, “ Sister André is a love song for those who are lonely and looking and waiting to love and be loved. An encouragement to never give up the patient pursuit. It could come at any time! ‘ Rhumba Country ” was co-produced by Chris Seefried , Elliot Bergman , and LaFarge and was recorded in Los Angeles, CA & Chicago, IL. On ‘ Rhumba Country’ , he reveals his newly heightened devotion to making music that channels pure joy. He says, “ There was a time when I glorified sadness because I lost sight of who I was, but now I understand that creating and expressing joy is my gift, and gifts are meant to be shared .” Reclaiming his voice, LaFarge has recorded his boldest album yet.

After crisscrossing the nation for the last half-decade looking for a home, LaFarge found himself in Mid-Coast Maine. Upon arriving, the Illinois-born singer/songwriter/actor pursued a major life change, working 12-hour days on a local farm—a turn of events that catalyzed an extraordinary burst of creativity and redefined his sense of purpose as an artist. As he immersed himself in the album’s creation, LaFarge began dreaming up a kaleidoscopic sound informed by his love of music from far-ranging eras and corners of the globe, including mambo, tropicalia, rocksteady, and mid-century American rock-and-roll. He pares his songs down to the essential throughout the album, ornamenting each track with subtle details and showcasing his distinct voice and ineffable charisma.

His boundless curiosity for music from other cultures was vital in shaping the album’s captivating sound. “ Listening to a lot of music from around the world helped simplify my approach, ” he notes, naming Brazilian singer/composer Jorge Ben among his key inspirations. “ The more you listen to music from around the world, you realize everybody’s got their form of country music, ” he says. “It goes back to why I named the album Rhumba Country in the first place: it’s poking fun at the futility of boxing everything into a few genres, ‘What is folk music? What is country or soul?’ I’ve always bucked at all those boundaries and found it much more exciting to create my own genre.”

In addition to his acclaimed music career, Pokey LaFarge is also an actor as well. He appeared in 2013’s The Lone Ranger (starring Johnny Depp), The Devil All The Time (starring Tom Holland and produced by Randall Poster & Jake Gyllenhaal ), and played Hank Snow in CMT’s series Sun Records . He also stars in the forthcoming O’Dessa (currently in post-production and stars Sadie Sink of Stranger Things fame).

‘ Rhumba Country’ is an invitation to come together to celebrate life and love. “ The songs that naturally come to me are upbeat and make you wanna dance or at least bop your head—they’re all very colorful”, says LaFarge. “ I used to think of my music in dark blue, but now I see it in technicolor”.

Pokey LaFarge’s Rhumba Country will be available across digital platforms, on compact disc, and standard black vinyl. Limited Gold vinyl and compact disc editions both autographed by Pokey LaFarge , will be available via Independent Retailers and are available for pre-order NOW via New West Records .
