Private Yarra Valley Wine Tours

Yarra valley private low cost winery tours from melbourne, domaine chandon yarra valley, best yarra valley wineries..

Arguably the best known among premium Yarra Valley wineries is Domaine Chandon Yarra Valley . And there are several reasons for that.

Yarra Valley wineries are many. And quite a few of them are very well known for their wonderful wines and picturesque landscapes. And we visit them frequently on our wine tasting tours of Yarra Valley.

But hardly any other of Yarra Valley wineries with all their fantastic surroundings can compete with  Domaine Chandon   in absolutely breathtaking natural beauty of the valley and mountains view that opens from Domaine Chandon .

It is simply amazing. You must be there to really appreciate it.

Another good reason for being that well known and ever popular is the wine of course! :)  We are talking CHAMPAGNE baby! Who on the wine tasting tour would refuse to taste some pretty good bubbly?

Domaine Chandon belongs to   Moët & Chandon  –  a French champagne house and one of the world’s largest champagne producers and co-owner of the luxury brands  Moët-Hennessy and Louis Vuitton .

You would think that with all this heritage Domaine Chandon  must be making quite an impressive wines and you would be absolutely right. During Three Koalas Yarra Valley Wine Tour you will have an opportunity to taste these wines and see that this statement is not an exaggeration.

Domaine Chandon   does make a wonderful sparkling wines. In our opinion even better than any French champagne we tried in the same price range.

Interestingly enough, since 2008 Domaine Chandon  also makes some very nice still wines as well and naturally, we would suggest you to have sample of them during our wine tasting tour at  Domaine Chandon.

Three Koalas Winery Tasting Tours tries to include Domaine Chandon winery on all our tour itineraries form Melbourne.

An outstanding experience and a highlight of our trip  We spent the day with you on 12 February touring the Yarra Valley and we just wanted to say how much we enjoyed it. We have done many wine tours in many places but none have compared to the experience we had with you. You selected the perfect wineries for us. We tasted some magnificent boutique wines and you introduced us personally to some amazing wine makers. Lunch was delicious. The food and wine alone would have made a memorable day but your generosity and company made it an outstanding experience and a highlight of our trip. Thank you.

“Custom Tour. Great Guide. Will do it again!”  Graham and Bill have a wonderful relationship with all of the wineries in the Yarra Valley region. Graham was our terrific host. Every winery during our tour greeted us with “right this way Graham,” and we experienced a class-above experience. Graham tailored a day that exactly met our wishes, and we sat one-on-one with winemakers as well as sampled some of the region’s finest wine offerings. We began the tour as clients, and we ended the tour as friends. Oftentimes, you never know when booking a tour if the web-site is “for real.” Well, this is “for real.” The web-site is a true reflection on the specialty tour that Graham arranged for us. We will book another tour with Graham as our guide on our next visit.

“Fantastic day out”  We booked a tour and ended up having a private tour day with Bill. Bill had our day planned well and suggested options to make sure we made the most of our visits. He was very flexible and knew who to approach at each venue to make our tour personal and entertaining. Fabulous tour! Highly recommend this guide.

I just wanted to write Grape Escape thanking them for an amazing day. My partner and I were lucky enough to have a tour with Graham this week and we were so impressed with Graham, he is very gracious and friendly. The whole tour could not have been better! We enjoyed ourselves every moment and were so happy that we got to pick and choose which wineries we wanted to visit (with great suggestions from Graham). Also the lunch at Tokar was fantastic. Thanks again for everything Graham! It was the highlight of our trip and we will be seeing you again!

We find Bill to be a brilliant tour operator, offering the finest balance between friendliness and professionalism.

Our guests always return from a day or half day tour with Bill with glowing recommendations. They really appreciate his knowledge and personal working relationship with the wineries and other places that they visit.

Dear Bill – Thank you so much for a fantastic day. It was great to learn so much about the Yarra Valley and the wines. You really added a personal touch to the day, as well as showing us a great variety of different styles of wineries, It was especially interesting to talk to the winemakers in person. We will certainly recommend you to all our friends it has been a very memorable experience.

Bill, and Grape Escape Tours, is consistently professional. He conducts his business with the best interests of his passengers in mind and is keen to provide a unique and unforgettable experience.

In our evaluation of the conference you received all ‘very good’ for your winery tour and some people put it down as their conference highlight – so you did a fabulous job

The whole day was great. You were also unexpectantly good with our little child Julia and allowing us some time alone to taste the wines. Your knowledge of the wineries and the Yarra Valley were excellent. Thank you again for everything.

Thank you for your fantastic service. We had a wonderful day and really enjoyed the wineries you took us to. Most of them were ones we would never have tried if we were on our own. Our time in the Yarra Valley was most enjoyable and we are sure to return in the near future.

Known as one of Australia’s premier wine regions, the Yarra Valley is home to rolling vineyards, charming towns, and acclaimed wineries. For lovers of fine sparkling wine, no Yarra Valley visit is complete without a stop at Domaine Chandon – the premier maker of traditional method bubblies.

In this article, discover why Domaine Chandon is considered one of the Yarra Valley’s top cellar doors and how to plan an amazing experience at this renowned winery. From tastings to dining and vineyard views, read on for an insider’s guide to exploring Chandon’s sparkling wines and hospitality.

An Introduction to Domaine Chandon

Domaine Chandon is the Australian outpost of the legendary French Champagne house Moët & Chandon. It was established in the late 1980s as one of the first Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine producers outside of Champagne.

Set on over 200 acres along the Yarra River in Coldstream, the striking Chandon winery combines old-world charm with modern architecture. The scenic property features multiple tasting spaces, a lounge bar, restaurant, and of course – world-class vineyards growing traditional Champagne grapes.

Chandon is dedicated to crafting benchmark Australian sparkling wines that express purity of varietal character and regional terroir. Their winemakers have access to top vineyards across Victoria’s coolest regions like the Yarra Valley to make delicate, refined bubblies.

For any lover of fine sparkling wine, Domaine Chandon is a must-visit when touring the Yarra Valley and surrounding wine country. Keep reading for how to plan your tasting experience.

Planning Your Visit to Domaine Chandon

Domaine Chandon is located at 727 Maroondah Hwy, Coldstream VIC 3770. It’s approximately an hour’s drive northeast from Melbourne.

Some tips for planning your visit:

  • Check Opening Hours Online – Hours vary by season, so verify online before going.

  • Make a Day of It – Allow plenty of time to tour, taste, dine, and soak in vineyard views at your leisure.

With the right planning, you’re sure to have an amazing Chandon experience. Now let’s look at how to maximize your time once there.

Taking a Winery Tour

Chandon offers self-guided tours daily where you can walk their production halls to see how the sparkling wines get made. Download the tour app or pick up a printed guide before starting the tour route. Stops along the way include:

  • Vineyards – Walk amongst the vines used for Chandon’s key grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Gris.
  • Barrel Hall – See how wines age pre-blending in French and American oak casks to develop flavor complexity.
  • Disgorging and Dosage – Learn how yeast sediment is removed from the bottles and dosage sugar added before corking.
  • Tank Room – View the massive stainless steel tanks where base wines are fermented and blended.

The self-guided tour takes around 45 minutes and provides an insightful overview into Chandon’s traditional method winemaking. Don’t miss it!

Tasting the Bubbles at the Cellar Door

Of course, the highlight of any Domaine Chandon visit is tasting their acclaimed sparkling wines!

The best ways to taste at Chandon include:

  • Guided Flight – Try a curated tasting flight of 3-5 bubblies talking through each with an expert host.
  • Lounge Bar – Enjoy Chandon bubbles by the glass in a more casual setting with small plates.
  • Tasting Paddle – Create your own custom paddle comparing several different Chandon sparkling and still wine styles.
  • Wine and Cheese – Pair your wines with artisanal cheeses for an indulgent tasting experience.

Be sure to taste across Chandon’s portfolio – from dry styles like their signature Brut to sweeter wines like the Blanc de Blancs. Tasting at the source is truly the best way to experience these benchmark Aussie bubblies.

Pairing Food and Wine at The Barrel Hall

After all that tasting, you’ll need some food – and Domaine Chandon’s onsite Barrel Hall restaurant offers the perfect solution.

Here are some tips for the ultimate food and wine experience:

  • Match Chandon Bubbles – Let the expert staff suggest ideal pairings with Chandon wines to complement your dishes.
  • Share Dishes – Crafted in a share-style, the menu features house-made artisanal charcuterie, cheeses, seafood, salads and more.
  • Choose a Table with a View – Request seating on the outdoor terrace to soak up views of the vineyard and gardens.
  • Make Reservations – The restaurant is very popular, so book your table well in advance online.

With its seasonal, locally-driven menu perfectly pairing with a glass of Chandon, The Barrel Hall is a must for gourmet wining and dining in the Yarra Valley.

  • Yarra Valley wineries

Yarra Valley is famous for its majestic wine and beautiful vineyards. There are more than 100 wineries producing quality vintages renown around the world. The Yarra Valley’s relatively cool climate makes it perfectly suited for the production of high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wine. Some of the world famous brands like Domaine Chandon have their vineyard fields set up at the Yarra Valley. Other well established wineries like Yering Station, Oakridge and Tokar Estate combine perfectly with boutique houses such as Dominique Portet, Balgownie Estate and Bianchet to create a unique feel for the winery region.

Yarra Valley history

The first Yarra Valley vineyard, Yering Station was planted in 1838. It was a family-owned business committed to producing some of the best wine in the state. And it still does so today. After a major restoration in 1989, and the addition of a restaurant, self-guided tours and a produce store, it is now an important part of the region’s history.

After Yering Station started producing, it was followed by two more vineyards, and these three Yarra Valley wineries dominated 430 acres of the region. A boom-time followed and Yarra Valley in Victoria began producing wine that captured national attention and won international awards.

In the 1930s, the Great Depression struck and the Yarra Valley was not spared. A combination of economic misery and bad weather meant that by 1937 every vineyard in the region had turned into farming land. Its period as a wine-growing region was temporarily forgotten.

But the opportunities for potential wine growers remained and, by 1963, Wantirna Estate was born. Soon, new vineyards and even some older ones popped up and the Yarra Valley region was back to doing what it did best. In 1989, even the original Yering Station was replanted.

These days the Yarra Valley hosts more than hundred wineries and is considered as a leading winery region of Australia and the world. The region is synonymous with the production of high quality wine, mainly the major grape varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and of course the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All this made the Yarra Valley a favourite Victorian tourist destination.

And they don’t just do wine. Many wineries in Yarra Valley now provide visitors with an experience beyond stopping in for some wine tasting. Many have restaurants, guided tours, produce stores and cellar door sales. And if you want to stay longer, some even provide tranquil holiday accommodation in the way of bed and breakfast, apartments or cabins.

For a chance to see the wineries at their best, and immerse yourself in delicious wine, food and luxury, contact us on 03 840 04999 or via our booking page to see how we can make your tour special.

Many are family-owned and offer great service, as well as a relaxing way to spend your afternoon. Do a little wine tasting, and take a wine and vineyard tour as well.

You win all the way.

Domaine Chandon

In the 1960s, Moët & Chandon began exploring the potential for producing world class sparkling wines outside France. Having established successful Chandon Estates in Argentina, Brazil and California, they saw the opportunity to produce a premium quality sparkling wine in Australia.

During the mid-eighties, a group of Australian wine experts were engaged to find an ideal site for growing traditional cool climate champagne grape varieties. Nestling in the Yarra Valley, they found an old dairy farm named ‘Green Point’ with the perfect combination of cool climate and great soil. Since 1986, this has been the site of Domaine Chandon.

By the early 1990s, the Chandon winemaking team began producing small quantities of still wines, primarily for Cellar Door. They sourced grapes from some of the exceptional Victorian vineyards which supplied fruit for Chandon sparkling wines.

All Chandon sparkling wines are created using the centuries-old ‘méthode traditionnelle’, developed in the Champagne region of France. After the grapes are pressed, the juice undergoes two separate fermentations, the second taking place in individual bottles producing the fine bubbles of great sparkling wine. Méthode traditionnelle wines are made exclusively from chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grape varieties, each imparting classic varietal flavours, elegance and finesse.

Yering Station vineyard

Victoria’s first vineyard was planted at Yering Station in 1838. The Scottish-born Ryrie brothers ventured into the Yarra Valley as they moved their cattle south from Sydney. Taking up a grazing license of 43 000 acres, they named the property ‘Yering’, its Aboriginal name. The Ryrie’s planted two varieties, the Black Cluster of Hamburg and a white grape variety called Sweetwater. During the early 1850’s they returned to Sydney and Paul de Castella took ownership of Yering Station, developing the property from what remained primarily a cattle station into a landmark of winemaking in Victoria.

For years the Yering Station vineyard was one of the largest in the area and as visitors and holiday makers to the Yarra Valley began to increase, wines from this new region began to make their mark on the world.

After changing hands several times throughout the early-to-mid 1900’s, Yering Station was purchased by the Rathbone family in 1996. A further 100 acres of vines were planted and that same year a joint venture was signed with Champagne Devaux, a leading Champagne house in France, to make the now famed Yarrabank sparkling. The Rathbone family made plans for the development of a state-of-the-art winery to accommodate and complement the anticipated increase in winemaking standards. John Evans moved across from nearby Yarra Ridge to manage the expanding vineyards.

Today Yering Station remains true to its heritage as a family-owned and operated winery dedicated to producing wines of quality and distinction. The Rathbone family is committed to providing an environment that allows its passionate young team to thrive. In recent times, this vision has culminated in some exciting recognition, with the ‘International Winemaker of the Year’ at the highly coveted International Wine and Spirit Competition, London in 2004. As well as the property’s induction into the Australian Tourism Awards ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2006.

Tokar Estate

When Leon and Rita Tokar purchased the property of Tokar Estate in June 1995, the land was covered in thistles, tussock grass and snakes. The plan was initially to produce grapes for their own consumption only – “to play at making wine ourselves, for ourselves”.

However, the fabulous positioning of the site coupled with the extremely fertile soils made it an ideal location to undertake a modest planting of Pinot Noir. With that, Leon Tokar’s vision was born and in 1996 the Vineyard itself was established in the Yarra Valley, with 30 acres under vines and producing premium fruit by 1998.

Using their new home as a cellar door, good wine flowed as Rita prepared and served a delicious assortment of light lunches on the lush rolling lawns of the admired new estate. These occasions were not only extremely popular amongst their family friends, yet also, so personally rewarding for both Leon and Rita that it was not too long before the concept of making wines and meals on a larger scale was born. Resulting in the ‘creation’ of what is now proudly called Tokar Estate – a fabulous setting in the heart of the iconic Yarra Valley region.

Oakridge winery

Oakridge Wines has been capturing the spirit of the Yarra Valley for more than three decades. Established near Seville in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, Oakridge Wines began as a family company. A pioneer of the Upper Yarra Valley, Oakridge recognised the potential for making great wine on the rich, red, volcanic soils of the sub-region. The turn of the century saw Oakridge move to its location in Coldstream, and become a part of one of Australia’s larger wine companies. In recent times, Oakridge once again returned to family ownership.

Oakridge crafts their wines using traditional methods and local knowledge built over 30 vintages to bring out the best of every season. The Oakridge house style delivers wines known for their subtlety, elegance, freshness, purity, balance and length. Their award winning wines consistently outperform their price points and are approachable and food friendly – in short, table wines in the true sense.

Balgownie Estate

In 1969, pharmacist Stuart Anderson established central Victoria’s first vines in over 80 years and by the early 1970’s, was well into the production of reds that created a much need boost to the Victorian wine industry.

30 years on, Balgownie Estate is now owned and operated by Des and Rod Forrester. Brothers and wine lovers alike, who are passionate in preserving the estate’s well established reputation. They have a commitment to producing high quality product and maintaing healthy vines to continually attain the perfect yield balance.

Balgownie Estate features hard clay-like soil with good moisture absorption. As a result, the resulting grapes that are produced have a heightened flavour. According to Tobias Ansted, the previous Balgownie Estate owner, the wines tend to be more “earthy and savoury”, when compared to those from South Australian winery regions.

Shiraz and Cabernet sauvignon were the original vine plantings at Balgownie Estate in 1969. Today however, chardonnay and pinot noir are also planted together with smaller amounts of sangiovese, cabernet franc and viognier.

The Balgownie Estate wine range includes the: White Label, The Estate, Yarra Valley, Museum Releases and Black Label.

Rochford Wines

Located in close proximity to Domain Chandon, Rochford Wines & Estate is a remarkable destination and a spectacular place to visit. Located just one hour from the Melbourne CBD, Rochford features a Winery, Art Gallery, Restaurant, Cafe and Festival Ground in which the often hold regular events with artists such as Hunters & Collectors and Pete Murray.

Rochford is one of those places where the scenery simply captivates you, from the indoors that are beautifully designed and the Art work that they have on show is worth the effort of getting their. They have many famous artists on display from Norman Lindsay to Sidney Nolan and you may very well be coming home from your limo wine tour with one of these paintings tucked under your arm.

Whist Rochford is well know for their art and wine, often over looked is the awesome restaurant that works really well for large groups. They provide both inside and outside seating, cater for vegetarians and have a vast selection of fudge for those with a sweet tooth.

Their wine selection is good also with their award winning Chardonnay’s and Crisp Spicy full flavoured Red’s.

De Bortoli Winery

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family owned wine company first established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The duo migrated to Australia from Italy, from regional villas at the scenic tourist destination of the Italian Alps, near the wine producing town of Asolo.

It was their son, Deen De Bortoli, (1936 – 2003) who later went on to expanded and cement the family’s reputation as master wine producers that was first initiated by his parents. Deen’s children also played their part in De Bortoli’s credibility for high quality premium wine, including the iconic award winning dessert wine ‘Noble One’.

One thing that you are certain to find whilst visiting De Botoli, is the Italian family values that have been passed down through the generations with a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends. At De Bortoli you become family and that experience alone is well worth a visit there, as the warmth and good will you receive will stay with you for a long time after your tour.

The property is now used for producing fine quality homemade cheeses in what is well known as one of Australia’s premium winery and dairy regions. 9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

The stone buildings of a Marseille, France, situated next to a port filled with sailboats. A hill rises in the background, and there is a church with a tall spire on top. The whole scene is bathed in rose-colored light.

By Sophie Stuber

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Where to stay: Hotel de la Paix (€354 per night); Hotel Carlton (€406).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

To stay: Les Chambres de Marie (€170); La Maison Galiène (€259); Yndo Hotel (€355); Le Palais Gallien Hôtel & Spa (€419).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

To stay: Hotel Voltaire Opéra (€103); Hotel de la Cité (€120).

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

To stay in Lyon: Fourvière Hotel (€189); Hôtel du Théâtre (€323).

To stay in St.-Étienne: Le Parc 42 (€113); Le Golf Sauna (€269).

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 6; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

To stay: Hotel Le Corbusier (€229); Maison Juste (€300).

Soccer: July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

To stay: Hôtel Rossetti (€186); Yelo Mozart (€238).

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.

To stay: Kia Ora Lodge (€265, seven miles from Teahupo’o); Punatea Village (€73, six miles from Teahupo’o).

52 Places:  Why do we travel? For food, culture, adventure, natural beauty? Our 2024 list has all those elements, and more .

Mumbai:  Spend 36 hours in this fast-changing Indian city  by exploring ancient caves, catching a concert in a former textile mill and feasting on mangoes.

Kyoto:  The Japanese city’s dry gardens offer spots for quiet contemplation  in an increasingly overtouristed destination.

Iceland:  The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found .

Texas:  Canoeing the Rio Grande near Big Bend National Park can be magical. But as the river dries, it’s getting harder to find where a boat will actually float .
