Safari Suits means clothing created for cross-country expeditions. Due to its cool fabric, safari jackets were initially designed for military purposes in Britain woven out of the cotton drill and were to be used in warm climatic conditions.

Another use of Safari suit was during Safaris in jungles where its light green color was used as a camouflage which made the militants blend in with the natural surroundings. It was also the most common form of clothing among professionals working in both government and nongovernment organizations.

Origin and History

The safari suit was a gift by British Raj to India.

In India, Safari suit was seen as a big shift from the Gandhian Khadi to new modern western dress code. Safari Suits became popular amongst masses only after 1990 when Reliance Industries started producing Safari Suit clothing within India. Before that the access was limited to bureaucratic and political classes.

Another prime reason for the popularity of safari suits in India is its low cost and better usability. Few popular Indian personalities who flaunt the understated charm of the Safari suit include Industrialist Rahul Bajaj, Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, and late Bollywood stars Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna.

Apart from India, Safari suits became popular in United Arab Emirates, South East Asia, and Africa as well. Moreover, Safari suits were a common style during the Pop culture and were commonly seen in James Bond movies as well.

The acceptance for safari suit had become so apparent that unofficially it was the official uniform for the urban educated professionals. As the popularity of safari suit increased, the bureaucratic uniform soon became a fashion statement during weddings, parties and other public occasions. Safari suit truly became the status symbol of the urban elite and professionals.

Safari suits were also known as Leisure suits due to their casual and comfortable design. Initially, safari jackets were made for military purposes, thus it carried rough and tough styles with patch pockets and open collars. The fabric used was also coarse and thick. The suit can be worn with or without a belt. One of the most common additions to the safari suit is a round hat.

The overall style has evolved over the last several years which has made this timeless piece of clothing even more appealing and in sync with today’s trends. Finer fabrics are also used, which are in contrast to the coarser forms of materials used initially. These days women don the Safari jackets as well with skirts or jeans. Several designers have given the masculine Safari Jacket a touch of elegance in order for it to appeal to more feminine tastes.

Innovations

Safari suits have undergone many changes over a period of time, including the changes in the purpose for which it is worn. With the change in usability, finer cloth is used to make the Safari Jackets for example Linen, Khadi, and Cotton. Moreover, the collars have been modified to a large extent and are more ‘shirt like’ and smaller.

If a woman wishes to dress with an ‘on the edge’ appeal, then a Safari jacket can do complete justice to that. At the same time, a Safari jacket helps any man to bring about the manliness’ in his style while giving a chic and understated style statement. The safari suit can be both with full sleeves and short sleeves. The colors are generally in lighter shades.

Making a Fashion Statement

For men, a nice tie in a contrasting color would add the X-factor which would look classy and trendy all at the same time.

For women who wish to wear the Safari Suit should opt for minimal accessories since the basic essence of the Safari suit exhibits simple elegance and understated style. A nice chunky watch or bracelet would add the perfect feminine touch to the overall style.

Weather Suitability

The traditional Safari Suits are best for hot and humid weather conditions since they are mostly made out of heat beating’ fabrics such as Cotton , Linen or Khadi. However, due to fashion revamping the basic style of the Safari suit, one can now find them in warmer materials like Tweed or wool which make it perfect for colder climates as well.

Maintenance

For Safari Suits made out of Cotton or Linen, a machine wash would be best. However, for sturdier fabrics that require more care like Tweed or Wool, a dry clean method would be the best option.

Safari Suits

The a-z of safari suits… and the best safari suits to buy.

Looking for a safari suit? Going on a safari is a fun experience, it allows you to explore a vast range of new locations, and it can be incredibly interesting too. The safari experience is fun, rewarding and you will find it very immersive. With that in mind, having the right safari suit is very important. It helps you avoid standing out to protect against predators, and it also makes it easy to stay away from the unwanted heat.

What is a safari suit?

At its core, this is a suit that will help you protect yourself against any potential challenges during a trip in the savanna. It’s a very good idea to have a safari suit because it protects you against any problems. You can pair a safari jacket with dedicated shorts or trousers and it will become a safari suit.

The main idea here is to have a suit that offers protection against many of the challenges that appear in the wilderness. There can be insect bites , predators attacking and so on. The safari suit is designed to be inconspicuous, so you can explore the region at your own pace without worrying about any possible problems that can appear.

What makes a great safari suit?

As we mentioned earlier, the best safari suit is the one that will not make you stand out. The main colors for this tend to be beige, brown, tan or khaki, although you can find some white safari suits too. The idea here is that you want to avoid any impact on the wildlife, instead you want to be camouflaged and experience the wildlife in its most natural format.

Bright colors will most likely make you stand out in the environment. When that happens, you end up scaring the animals, and that’s definitely something you must take into consideration as much as you can. If you would have safari suits that are blue for example or very dark, these will attract a lot of insects that carry yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria, among many others. That’s why specific coloring is very important because it will help you stay safe.

What kinds of safari suits are there?

You can have the standard safari jacket which has the traditional length, it comes with multiple pockets and it should fit perfectly. You also have the mid-length jacket which is shorter and that can be a bit easier to wear. If you want to traverse challenging territories, the bush jacket is very handy.

This one has a belt around the waist and it can have either a similar length or it can be longer when compared to other jackets.

Lastly, you have safari bomber jackets that are made out of polyester fabric. Most of these tend to have 4 path pockets, zippered front and an inside pocket. They are the most durable and dependable, but also the most expensive.

You can also get a safari vest if you want, this one is designed to offer the extra warmth and protection you may need. It also delivers extra pockets too, which is something you need to take into consideration as much as you can.

What to wear with a safari suit?

The upper garments would usually include a shirt under the jacket. Some people want a sleeveless option because it can get very hot. There’s also the option for long sleeves, depending on your own needs and requirements.

For the lower garments, you want to have either shorts or khaki trousers. Women can go for leggings if they want to. Long skirts can be a good idea too, since they offer added protection. When it comes to what footwear you need, you do want safari boots or hiking shoes. Slip on or closed shoes are ok too, but it’s better to go with boots or something that delivers an even better protection.

How to wear a safari suit?

Ideally, you want to use the safari suit when you go in a safari trip with a designated guide. You want to have a shirt, a jacket on top of it, safari trousers and proper shoes. You can adapt everything according to your own needs, and the results can be very interesting once you go down this route. You will be incredibly impressed with the value and results, and the experience is amazing because of it.

Do you need a safari hat?

Yes, normally you do, because there can be all kinds of hazards in the wilderness. A good safari hat needs to be waterproof, to provide you with proper coverage and it should help you fight against the UV rays. Obviously it needs to be comfortable and when it comes to material it can be cotton based, rubber or leather based.

Think about where you are going, this might require some changes to the safari suit

It’s important to know where and also when you are going on a safari. This will make it easy to identify the proper equipment you need. If you visit during the dry season, then the equipment above will do just fine. However, if you visit during the wet season, then you need to think about additional items that offer waterproofing and added protection. However, the colors need to stay the same for the most part, even if you visit during the rainy season.

The safari suits didn’t change that much over the past century. People have always been very excited to explore the wilderness, and the structure of a safari suit was very well prepared from the start. Granted, nowadays we are using different materials and the designs are a bit more modern, but the regular safari suits always had a thick jacket, durable pants, and high-quality shoes. It’s important to have the right equipment when you’re going into the jungle, so using the right tips and tricks will help you more than you imagine. Give these a try and remember to take all the little details into consideration as they can help save your life!

And that’s our take on safari suits. What do you think – any important information missing? Or perhaps you have a few safari suit tips of your own. Please let us know in the comments section below!

‘Revolutionary’ Suit Trend Shows The Epicentre Of Men’s Fashion Is Shifting For The Better

Europe, pay attention.

‘Revolutionary’ Suit Trend Shows The Epicentre Of Men’s Fashion Is Shifting For The Better

It used to be that any conversation about high fashion naturally gravitated towards Europe: the grand couturiers of France, the storied luxury houses of Italy, tailors on London’s Savile Row…

Europe might still be a fashion powerhouse, but it’s no longer the only word in men’s style. DMARGE recently conducted a reader survey about changing perceptions of luxury, and a whopping 80% of you agree that luxury doesn’t have to come from Europe. Just as we recognise that Europe’s not the sole domain of the finer things in life, so too do we observe that the hottest style trends are increasingly coming from places outside of the ‘Old World’.

One men’s style trend that’s being led by designers and snappy dressers outside of Europe is the revival of the leisure suit. While the first leisure suits originated in the 1930s on the US’ West Coast, it was in the 1960s and 1970s that leisure suits became particularly popular, and emerged the form we recognise them as today.

Taking on design cues from the utilitarian safari jacket, safari suits became fashionable thanks to French designers like Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent championing the look. The style was also picked up by the mod subculture in the UK, as well as by quintessential British men’s style icons of the era such as Roger Moore and the Prince of Wales. In recent years, it’s become somewhat kitsch; a shorthand for sleaze.

But the modern safari suit has far more salubrious and less European origins. Because leisure suits are an eminently practical, rather smart warm-weather option, well-dressed gents in Africa and South Asia have long championed the safari suit, further refining the style and transforming it from something to be mocked to a respectable smart-casual option. Now, Australians are paying attention – and Europe should, too.

Take Australian-founded, South-Africa based tailoring outfit Button Brothers’ leisure suit, which is “inspired by the powerful leaders of the Front Line States who fought for the liberty of many in Africa,” taking design cues from military fatigues worn by revolutionary freedom fighters whilst incorporating soft, breathable cotton.

Another Australian tailor that’s reinvigorating the leisure suit is Patrick Johnson . His take incorporates beautifully-textured linen and nods to the sorts of mountain jackets explorers in the Himalayas would regularly don during mountain expeditions – turning adventure gear into haute couture.

RELATED: Menswear Experts Explain What Will Happen To Australia’s Suit Culture If We Don’t Go Back To Work

For a different take on the leisure suit, one only has to look to US-based tailoring service Hangrr , whose leisure suits throwback to peak American preppy style: small pockets, slim tailoring and a double vent for maximum warm-weather comfort.

The revival of the leisure suit proves something that Australian luxury consumers have known intuitively for many years: that fashion’s epicentre is slowly shifting from Europe and expanding elsewhere. Keep an eye on this trend – and keep your eye out for other men’s style trends emerging outside of Europe.

Why The Safari Jacket Is 2024’s Most Stylish And Practical Menswear Item

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

It’s the badass outerwear of choice for style icons like Ernest Hemingway and Clint Eastwood, one that historically was less about dressing for dinner, rather about catching it. And yet, the safari jacket still divides.

That’s because get it right, and you look straight-from-the-fridge cool. But get it wrong, and you look the part of the Great White Hunter. Get it right, and you look Burt Reynolds-level macho. Get it wrong, and you just look plain awkward. But, ask any menswear expert, and they’ll soon tell you it’s worth the risk.

Never mind the practical benefits – room to carry your stuff; light enough to wear all summer. The safari jacket is a design classic, whether you’re in the real thing or one of fashion’s many interpretations, and it may just be the only cool jacket you need for the balmier months.

What Is A Safari Jacket?

Take the practicality of the military style field jacket – a tough cotton or cotton-blend fabric formed into a loose-fitting, mid-length garment with four bellows pockets at the chest and hip. Now do it in a more general purpose shade of beige, in a lighter-weight, breathable fabric like linen or cotton drill and add details such as an open neck, epaulettes and a belt to keep everything pulled together and in order.

There you have it: the safari jacket – a kind of field-meets-shooting jacket, substantial enough to wear a layer underneath, insubstantial enough to wear next to the skin or for the sleeves to be easily rolled ready to go hunting in, even if that’s just for the next bar.

Why You Need A Safari Jacket Today

Saint Laurent, which is credited with thrusting the style into the mainstream, famously still offers one, of course. But there’s a good reason why designers including Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and brands like Abercrombie and Barbour have versions too. It just works. When it’s too hot for a proper jacket, but the event calls for something smarter than just a shirt, the safari jacket – functional in the outback, smart in a more urban jungle setting – works.

“The safari jacket is bittersweet – it can look like you’re wearing a costume, but the fact is that it’s great for the summer,” says Gieves & Hawkes creative director John Harrison. “They make quite a statement, but they really do the job.”

What’s more, it’s not a capital ‘F’ fashion piece either. That doesn’t mean a good quality example won’t be wearable for years to come. Just think khaki, cotton, classic. Its versatility is well documented, and it’s the ideal accompaniment to selvedge denim or, when the occasion calls, sharp tailoring. In short, it’s the ultimate trophy piece.

Safari Jacket Style Tips

Don’t overdo it.

The safari jacket is designed to be the star of the show, so allow it to take over, and avoid wearing anything else that attempts to compete with it for attention. If in doubt, muted basics are the order of the day, so throw it over a simple T-shirt and foot with dark denim and minimalist sneakers.

Aim High or Low

Much like other pieces in the menswear hall of fame, it’s possible to dress the safari jacket both up and down. Whether you wear it over a shirt, knitted tie and dark flannel trousers to appear smart or with white jeans and deck shoes for a Riviera feel, try leaving the jacket open but tying the belt across the middle for a nonchalant look.

Re-appropriate It

Unless en route to a fancy dress a party, don’t attempt the all-out utility look. If you’re wearing a safari jacket, avoid also wearing khakis, combat pants, or bush hat. It’s important to re-appropriate the safari jacket from its original setting as an upscale piece to avoid looking like someone who’s lost his shotgun.

Play Around With Fabric

The safari jacket is made by its pattern, but different materials can provide different effects. Linen ages well, making for a jacket that will take on a timeworn look; suede has more of an eveningwear feel, so works well for guys with a smarter wardrobe; while options in leather offer added insulation during colder months.

Leave The Bag At Home

In its infancy, the pocket on a safari jacket would be used to carry ammo, batteries for the GPS, a flask and likely a pipe. Though most modern men have little need for these in everyday life, it’s still possible to use the jacket as intended and leave the backpack at home.

5 Key Safari Jackets

Private white v.c..

Known for its robust outerwear, British brand Private White V.C. specialises in stylish yet functional designs. This prime example is a minimalistic take on the safari jacket. Gone are the shoulder epaulettes and belt; replaced by pared-down pockets with discrete poppers, a shorter length and a hidden placket, giving it a smarter overall feel.

Anderson & Sheppard

Given that it occupies a space on Savile Row , Anderson & Sheppard is best known for its exemplary tailoring. However, the heritage firm also produces a fine take on the safari jacket. Made from military-esque cotton drill and coming with 15 pockets as standard – including two iPad-sized interior pockets – it’s perhaps the handiest garment you could own. Forget luggage, just get yourself one of these.

Saint Laurent

Sure, because of its butter-soft lambskin construction and silk lining, the all-leather ‘Saharienne’ jacket by Saint Laurent would be useless in an actual safari – but just look at it. An ultra luxurious take on the design Yves himself backed in the 1960s, this is the French label at its best: classic, louche and incredibly desirable.

Marks & Spencer

Trust Marks & Spencer to come up with a safari jacket that both ticks all the design boxes and doesn’t offend your wallet. The British high street retailer has put its own spin on the classic piece, choosing to forgo the belt and instead add a couple of buttoned rear vents. So, whether you mount a horse in the desert or a motorcycle in the city, your jacket won’t scrunch up when you sit down.

Sitting somewhere in between Barbour’s signature waxed outerwear and the British brand’s motorcycle styles, this four pocket cotton design is an ideal modern update on the safari jacket. The drawstring waist provides a customisable fit, while a zip-and-button closure, coupled with a buttoned throat latch ensure that when the weather turns sour, it’ll be a useful ally.

The History Of The Safari Jacket

Picture the late 19th-century British soldiers of the Boer War, tramping across the plains of South Africa, unable to find their enemy – engaged as they were in this new, ungentlemanly form of warfare known as ‘guerilla’. Of course, it didn’t help that the British soldiers wore tunics in red, and the Afrikaners – appreciating the advantage of blending into the landscape – wore khaki.

Officers in British high command thought they were on to something – and shortly after came the first British military dress to make a step towards the palette of beiges, dun browns, and olive drabs still used today. The resulting attire – a four-pocket field jacket in khaki – would by turns be adopted by hunters, who likewise needed to be less visible to their prey.

Indeed, the so-called safari jacket was born, and it would remain a specialist item – worn by hunters and trackers including diehard-killers-of-anything-that-moved Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt. Although versions of the safari jacket were re-adopted for both the British and German forces fighting in Africa during World War Two, it was typically only worn on safari and would have looked mightily out of place anywhere else up until the mid-1950s.

This was an idea underscored by Hollywood. From the 1930s, the film machine decided the perceived exoticism of the Great Continent was ripe for the next spate of romantic, action-packed movies, with the likes of Clark Gable donning safari jackets on screen. Out came The Road to Zanzibar (1941), Mogambo (1953), Safari (1956), Hatari! (1962), onwards to the likes of Clint Eastwood in White Hunter Black Heart (1990) – by which time the safari jacket had arguably lapsed into ‘central casting’ territory.

Clark Gable wearing a safari jacket

But not before making its forays into fashion. In the movies – especially during that busy run of the 1960s – the safari jacket was typically worn with plenty of dust and sweat, perhaps a rakish neckerchief, baggy shorts, and maybe a pith helmet. Take away the perspiration, however, and the safari jacket was recognized for its practicality for city life.

In India – inspired by the climate again – it became the local answer to the business suit. This was in part why Roger Moore wore a safari jacket in Octopussy (1983), partly set as it is in India. But then Moore, as James Bond, also wore one for the scenes of the private island of The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979).

But then Moore, or his wardrobe team, was ahead of the times: he wore a safari jacket in ‘The Saint’. This wasn’t just before Bond, it was before the other Saint too. It was the designers Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent who really gave the safari jacket a fashion overhaul.

The former introduced his take on the jacket in the mid-1960s, while the latter seemingly stole all the glory – or just got the timing right – after first showing his take on it in 1967, though it was a one-off made for a Vogue story on him the following year that made it a cult item for the times. And it’s never looked back since.

Styling Safari Suits

safari suit business

Modern Safari suits with varieties of styles and designs have become a-can’t-do-without for men of all ages who reckon with class, elegance and sophistication.

The two-piece made of the same material suit balances the line between casual and formal for men. The legendary style was originally designed for use in the warmer climates belonging to rugged African savanna.

Although, Safari suits were initially designed for military purposes in Britain due to their cool fabric. Its origins can be traced far back as the 1900’s during the Second Boer War when the British and European troops were stationed in South Africa.

However, fashion designers have modernised safari suits from mere belted style and pocket details into sharp stylish designs that fit perfectly.

safari suit business

Distinct Features Of Safari Suits Aside from the fact that it is now designed with varieties of fabrics and styles, as well as worn to all occasions and events, Safari suits are easy-to-maintain as opposed to the challenges of maintaining the regular Western suits.

This is why it is now one of the most suitable outfits to have in numbers but ensure the pieces are in their different fabrics and shades.

Pirch files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy

Luxury kitchen and bath appliance retailer is also facing multiple civil suits filed by customers, landlords and other merchants. Filing estimates it is more than $100 million in debt.

Luxury appliance retailer Pirch has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to court records filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The San Diego County-based company with about half a dozen stores in Southern California filed for bankruptcy on Friday, two days after it gave notice to employees that it was shutting down for good.

We offer subscribers exclusive access to our best journalism. Thank you for your support.

In its filing, Pirch estimated it has 1,000 to 5,000 creditors and liabilities of $100 million to $500 million. It listed its assets at $10 million to $50 million.

Based on interviews with vendors, former employees, customers a and court filings, creditors could include a combination of landlords, individual customers, vendors, merchants the company was doing business with, and unpaid bills that may have accumulated while operating the business.

In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the most common type of bankruptcy, the debtor sells non-exempt assets and then uses the proceeds to pay its creditors. The company indicated in its filing that it would have funds to disperse.

The retailer halted operations in late March, leaving customers with unfulfilled orders, landlords with unpaid rent, vendors with unpaid merchandise and other business stakeholders with money owed, according to court filings.

Earlier this month, American Express sued Pirch for $33 million.

It is also been sued by landlords, customers, high-end appliance maker Sub-Zero and credit and debit card processor Worldpay.

Employees have filed complaints with the state regarding the company’s layoff practices, and at least two customers have asked for criminal inquiries.

Staff writer Alex Riggins contributed to this report.

Trump's trial is losing jurors after they've already been sworn in

  • Donald Trump's criminal hush-money trial in New York is struggling to keep its jurors.
  • Two of the seven jurors who had been sworn in have now been excused.
  • "I don't believe at this point I can be fair and unbiased," one juror told the judge.

Insider Today

Before Thursday, former President Donald Trump's first trial seemed to be running ahead of schedule.

Jury selection was widely expected to last two weeks, part of an overall six-week trial. But by Tuesday, seven out of twelve jurors were sworn in, putting the trial on track to kick off with opening statements next Monday.

On Thursday, though, the proceedings faced a setback.

One juror dropped out, telling the court she had "concerns about her ability to be fair and impartial" in the trial after sleeping on it.

Another juror was booted from the case under more mysterious circumstances.

After a prosecutor said the Manhattan District Attorney's Office found records that he may have taken a plea deal in the 1990s — and therefore wasn't forthcoming about his experience with the law in his questionnaire earlier this week — the judge held a discussion with the juror and lawyers out of earshot from the press.

He said the conversation would be sealed from the public court record and excused him from the case.

Prosecutors have accused Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records with hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels, keeping her quiet ahead of the 2016 election about an affair she says she had with him.

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan is trying to suss out if prospective jurors harbor some beliefs against or in support of Trump that would prevent them from deciding the case impartially.

Around half of the prospective jurors so far have filtered themselves out by saying they couldn't be impartial. The rest are asked to answer a 42-part jury questionnaire, as well as questions from prosecutors and Trump's lawyers, to help the judge decide whether they should get a seat on the jury.

Two Trump jurors were dismissed

Merchan said Thursday morning that the woman sworn in Tuesday and known as "Juror No. 2" called the court on Wednesday with fresh doubts. In court Thursday, she told the judge that she was concerned about her identity possibly being revealed to the public.

Related stories

"Yesterday alone I have had friends, family push things to my phone regarding questioning my identity as a juror," the juror then told the judge in the courtroom.

"I don't believe at this point I can be fair and unbiased," the woman explained before Merchan dismissed her from the case.

Merchan then scolded the press for revealing details about the woman during the jury selection process this week.

"There's a reason why this is an anonymous jury, and we've taken the measures that we've taken," Merchan said when he addressed the press and encouraged them to use "common sense."

"It kind of defeats the purpose of that when so much information is put out there that makes it very, very easy to find out who they are," the judge said.

Merchan said that the juror who was excused "said she was afraid and intimidated by all the press."

"We just lost what may have been a very good juror," Merchan added.

Joshua Steinglass, one of the prosecutors, then raised an issue with the man who was previously sworn in as "Juror No. 4."

He said someone with the same name had been arrested in the 1990s "for tearing down political advertisements" that were "on the political right."

The juror or his wife was also "previously involved in a criminal inquiry and entered in deferred prosecution agreement with Manhattan DA's office," Steinglass said.

Merchan discussed the issue in a sidebar conference with the juror, Trump's lawyers, and prosecutors, which mostly could not be heard by reporters in the room. According to pool reporters in the courtroom, the juror gesticulated with his hands and appeared annoyed.

After two sidebar conferences — which the judge said would be sealed in the court transcript because "it was very personal information that was elicited" — Merchan excused him from sitting on the jury.

"I will also note for the record that he expressed annoyance at how much information was available to the public," Merchan said.

That brings the number of seated jurors back down to five.

Jury selection remains ongoing.

Smartmatic and OAN Settle Defamation Suit

Smartmatic, an elections technology company, had accused the conservative broadcaster of amplifying baseless claims about election fraud.

The voting technology company Smartmatic reached a settlement on Tuesday in its defamation lawsuit against One America News Network, a far-right broadcaster, over the amplification of election falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election.

Lawyers for both parties confirmed in emailed statements that there was a confidential settlement.

Smartmatic filed the lawsuit in 2021, accusing OAN of airing baseless claims that Smartmatic had been involved in rigging the presidential election through its voting machines. On Tuesday, a filing for a dismissal of the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be retried, was submitted by Smartmatic’s lawyers to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

OAN was one of several right-wing cable networks that broadcast conspiracy theories pushed by supporters of former President Donald J. Trump in the wake of his defeat in 2020, including claiming without evidence that vote tallies in critical states had been tampered with in order to help President Biden win.

In its original complaint, Smartmatic said that it had been a victim of the network’s “decision to increase its viewership and influence by spreading disinformation” as it attempted to siphon off viewers from Fox News. OAN repeatedly linked Smartmatic to a nationwide vote-rigging conspiracy, the complaint said, despite knowing there was no evidence and that Smartmatic’s technology and software had been used only in Los Angeles County during the election.

OAN, which was started by Herring Networks in 2013 and is a strong supporter of Mr. Trump, was dropped by DirecTV and Verizon Fios in 2022 and is no longer available on any major carriers.

While this case has concluded, there are numerous ongoing lawsuits filed by Smartmatic and another election technology company, Dominion Voting Systems, against conservative news outlets over their 2020 election coverage.

OAN still faces a defamation lawsuit from Dominion. It settled a separate lawsuit in September brought against the network by Eric Coomer, a former Dominion executive.

Last April, Fox News agreed to pay $787.5 million to Dominion to settle a defamation suit over the broadcasting of similar conspiracy theories. The last-minute settlement, believed to be the biggest ever in a defamation case, came on the day a trial was set to begin.

In 2021, Smartmatic sued Fox News in New York State Supreme Court, seeking at least $2.7 billion in damages. That case is not expected to go to trial until 2025. Fox News has filed a counterclaim accusing Smartmatic of a frivolous lawsuit designed to suppress free speech.

Smartmatic and Dominion have separate lawsuits against the outlet Newsmax, accusing it of repeatedly airing the baseless vote-rigging claims. Both cases are expected to go to trial in September in Delaware Superior Court, where they will be overseen by Judge Eric Davis , who presided over the Dominion v. Fox News trial last year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a soccer promoter’s antitrust lawsuit to go forward against FIFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation over the world governing body’s policy of not permitting a country to host league matches involving teams from other countries.

The high court order leaves in a place a federal appeals court ruling in favor of Relevent Sports, controlled by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

Relevent sued in 2019 after FIFA disrupted its plan to host a Spanish league match between Barcelona and Girona at Miami Gardens, Florida, and the USSF refused permission to sanction a league match between two teams from Ecuador.

A district court dismissed the lawsuit, but a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously reinstated it. The Biden administration weighed in on Relevent’s side at the Supreme Court.

Relevent and FIFA reached an agreement this month to drop FIFA from the suit, a deal that the USSF wants to review and that has not yet been approved by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni. FIFA, the USSF and Relevent lawyer Jeffrey L. Kessler did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.
