This wikiHow teaches you how to change the language used in your computer's web browser. You can change the language used in Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and Safari. You cannot change a mobile browser's language without changing the language for the entire smartphone or tablet.

Google Chrome

• If you're using a Mac, you can't change your Chrome language settings from within Chrome. Skip ahead to the Safari method to see how to change your Mac's default language, which will change the language used by Chrome. [1] X Research source

• Keep in mind that not all webpages will support your selected language.

• On a Mac, you'll click Preferences here.

• Your language settings won't apply to Firefox's menus, but any webpage you visit will be translated automatically into the language you selected if the website supports your language.

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer

• Unfortunately, you can't change the language used in Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer without changing the language used on your whole PC.

• This can take several minutes.

• You may have to restart your computer for the language to fully implement.

Some Web pages are available in a variety of languages and are displayed in the language you have set as your browser default. Configuring your Safari preferences so English is the default language ensures that content is consistently displayed in English, even if the page is written in another language. Language settings -- which determine languages for all apps, not just for Safari -- are in the System Preferences menu on your Mac and the Settings app on your iOS device.

Changing Language Settings on Mac OS X

Launch System Preferences from your Dock or Apple menu and then click "Language & Region." Ensure that "English" is present and listed as the "Primary" language at the top of the list on the left. If it is not, click "+" and add it, then drag it to the top of the list. Close your System Preferences window once your language is set. If Safari was open while you made the changes, quit it and then open it again to reset the browser to your new preferences.

Changing Language Settings on iOS

Launch the Settings app, tap "General" and then "International." On the next screen, verify that "English" is displayed in gray next to the "Languages" header. If not, tap "Languages" and select "English" from the list of available language options. Your iOS device will return to the Home screen after a few moments and display the language you selected. Starting with macOS Catalina, you can change a specific app's language without changing your Mac's system language. We'll show you how to do this for various apps on your Mac.

It's possible that you prefer using an app in a language that doesn't happen to be your Mac system's language. With this macOS feature, you can quickly change the language for just that app without affecting any other apps or system options on your Mac.

An example of this is that you might want to use Safari in Spanish, but your Mac uses English as its system language. With this option, you can use Safari in Spanish while using English at all other locations on your Mac.

You can always change the language to whatever you want.

Before you begin, close the app for which you want to change the language. Do this by clicking the app name in the menu bar and selecting "Quit." Alternatively, press the Command+Q keyboard shortcut.

Now that the app is closed, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac's screen and select "System Preferences."

When "System Preferences" opens, click the "Language & Region" option.

In the "Language & Region" window, click the "Apps" tab.

Under the "Apps" tab, in the bottom-left corner, click the "+" (plus) sign to add an app to the list. This is the list of specific apps for which you want to use a different language.

You'll see a small pop-up on your screen. In this pop-up, click the "Application" drop-down menu and select the app for which you want to change the language. Next, click the "Language" drop-down menu and select the language that you want the app to use.

Finally, click "Add" at the bottom of the pop-up to save your changes.

Note: The "Language" drop-down menu only shows the languages that your selected app supports. If you don't see a specific language in that menu, your selected app doesn't support that language.

You can now close the "Language & Region" window.

Launch the app for which you just changed the language, and you'll find that all of the options in the app now use the newly selected language.

That's all there is to it.

To go back to the default language for an app, simply remove that app from the list that you accessed above.

To do this, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac's screen and select "System Preferences."

Select "Language & Region" in "System Preferences."

Click the "Apps" tab to view your apps.

Click your app in the list so that it's selected, and then click the "-" (minus) sign in the lower-left corner of the "Language & Region" window.

Your app is now removed from the list and it's back to its default language.

If you use an iPhone or iPad alongside a Mac, you can change app-specific languages on those devices, too.

• You can change the primary language on your Mac computer, or add a secondary language, from the System Preferences menu.
• Changing the language on your Mac will effect menus and pop-ups, as well as your time zone and units of measurement.
• Once you've changed or added a language to your Mac, you'll need to restart your computer to enable it.  
• You can also change your Mac's region, which will effect how things like measurements and temperatures are displayed.

When you first buy a brand new Mac computer, the language and region is already set to the country you bought it in — in the US, this is going to be US English. 

If you're moving to a new country, or would just like to change or add a language to your Mac for any number of reasons, you can do so through your computer's settings. 

Note, however, that apps within macOS will not support every language.

Customize your Safari settings on iPhone

Customize your start page

When you open a new tab, you begin on your start page. You can customize your start page with new background images and options.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, then tap Edit.

Choose the options you want to appear on your start page:

Favorites: Display shortcuts to your favorite bookmarked websites. See Bookmark a favorite website .

Frequently Visited: Go straight to the websites you visit most.

Shared with You: See links shared with you in Messages, Mail, and more. See Find links shared with you .

Privacy Report: Stay updated on how many trackers and websites Safari blocked from tracking you. See View the Privacy Report .

Siri Suggestions: As you search, allow websites shared in Calendar and other apps to appear.

Reading List: Show webpages currently in your Reading List. See Add the current webpage to your Reading List .

Recently Closed Tabs: Go back to tabs you previously closed.

iCloud Tabs: Show open tabs from other Apple devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID and Safari is turned on in iCloud settings or preferences. See Organize your tabs with Tab Groups .

Note: Your custom start page settings are updated on all your Apple devices where you have Use Start Page on All Devices turned on, and you’re signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication .

Change the text size for a website on Safari

Use the Page Settings button to increase or decrease the text size.

Tap the large A to increase the font size or the small A to decrease it.

Change the display controls for a website on Safari

You can hide the search field, switch to Reader, and more.

Hide the search field: Tap Hide Toolbar (tap the bottom of the screen to get it back).

See a streamlined view of the webpage: Tap Show Reader (if available).

To return to the normal view, tap Hide Reader.

See what the webpage looks like on a desktop computer: Tap Request Desktop Website (if available).

You can also adjust Safari settings in Accessibility settings. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings. Tap Add App, choose Safari, then tap Safari to adjust the settings.

Choose where to save downloads

When you download a file in Safari, you can choose whether to save it to iCloud or on your iPhone.

iCloud Drive: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. This allows you to access the downloaded file on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

On My iPhone: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder on your iPhone.

Share website passwords with a group

You can create a group of trusted contacts and share a set of passwords. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

Change your display language on Google

You can set your preferred language for buttons and other display text that appears in Google Search.

Tip : This doesn’t change the language of your search results.

Utah coach says team was shaken after experiencing racist hate during NCAA Tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Members of the Utah women’s basketball team were subjected to racism near their hotel in Idaho last week when a pickup truck with a Confederate flag drove near them and the driver began using offensive language, including the N-word, authorities said Tuesday. The team was left shaken and wound up moving to a different hotel the next day.

Utah coach Lynne Roberts said her team experienced a series of hate crimes after arriving at its first NCAA Tournament hotel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She revealed what happened after Utah lost to Gonzaga in the second round of the tournament Monday night and authorities confirmed some of the details the following day.

Roberts said the incidents happened last Thursday night after the team arrived and they were disturbing to the traveling party to the point there were concerns about safety. Utah and other teams played their games in Spokane, but the Utes were staying about 30 miles away in Coeur d’Alene before they were relocated to a different hotel Friday.

“We had several instances of some kind of racial hate crimes toward our program and (it was) incredibly upsetting for all of us,” Roberts said. “In our world, in athletics and in university settings, it’s shocking. There’s so much diversity on a college campus and so you’re just not exposed to that very often.”

Tony Stewart, an official with the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, said at a news conference the Utes were walking from the hotel to a restaurant when the truck drove up and the driver began using racist language. After the team left the restaurant, the same driver returned “reinforced by others,” Stewart said, and they revved their engines and again yelled at the players.

“We all just were in shock, and we looked at each other like, did we just hear that? ... Everybody was in shock — our cheerleaders, our students that were in that area that heard it clearly were just frozen,” Utah deputy athletic director Charmelle Green, who is Black, told KSL.com.

Utah said it filed a police report the night of the incidents. Coeur d’Alene police chief Lee White said Tuesday about 100 people were around the area that night, but investigators need to interview those affected. He said there are two state charges that could be enforced — malicious harassment and disorderly conduct — if someone is arrested. White also said he was working with the FBI.

“Until we get all the facts and the investigation is complete, what charges might actually be brought against the perpetrators is yet to be determined,” White said.

Utah, South Dakota State and UC Irvine were staying at hotels in Idaho, even with Gonzaga as the host school , because of a lack of hotel space in the Spokane area. Several years ago, the city was announced as a host for the first and second rounds of the men’s NCAA Tournament and there was also a large youth volleyball tournament in the area during the weekend.

That left limited hotel space and Gonzaga received a waiver from the NCAA to allow teams to be housed in Idaho.

South Dakota State stayed in Post Falls, just west of Coeur d’Alene and on the Idaho-Washington state line. UC Irvine stayed in Coeur d’Alene, but was not involved in the incident with Utah. Even so, the team requested to move “for the well-being and safety of our student-athletes and the entire travel party,” Mike Uhlenkamp, assistant vice chancellor for communications and media relations, said in an email.

The women’s tournament differs from the men in that the 16 campus sites for first- and second-round games are not locked in until Selection Sunday, five days before those games begin. The campus sites allow host teams — the 16 highest seeds — to enjoy a homecourt advantage and, often, large crowds. Men’s sites are at neutral venues and chosen years in advance.

NCAA Vice President for Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman told the AP that the selection committee was slated to review the championship format after the 2025 tournament. She has been pushing for some time to move the review up to this year.

“That review would include the first four, first and second rounds and also an evaluation of the two-site regional format,” Holzman said. “We want to look at the preliminary rounds of the championship and with the growth we’ve had the last few years I think we should move up that review to start in 2024.”

The NCAA issued a statement earlier in the day thanking the leadership at Gonzaga and Utah as well as law enforcement.

“We are devastated about the Utah team’s experience while traveling to compete on what should have been a weekend competing on the brightest stage and creating some of the fondest memories of their lives,” the statement said.

Utah athletic director Mark Harlan criticized the decision to put the Utes so far away from the game site.

“As we continue to heal, we remain very disappointed in the decision to assign our team to hotels such a great distance from the competition site, in another state,” he said in a statement co-signed by Green and Roberts issued Tuesday. “We will work with NCAA leadership to make it clear that being so far removed from the site was unacceptable and a contributing factor to the impact of this incident.”

“Racism is real and it happens, and it’s awful. So for our players, whether they are white, Black, green, whatever, no one knew how to handle it and it was really upsetting,” Roberts said. “For our players and staff to not feel safe in an NCAA Tournament environment, it’s messed up.”

Roberts said the NCAA and Gonzaga worked to move the team after the first night. Gonzaga issued a statement saying the school was ”frustrated and deeply saddened” by the incident.

Far-right extremists have maintained a presence in the region for years. In 2018, at least nine hate groups operated in the region of Spokane and northern Idaho, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little issued a statement that read, in part, “There is no place for racism, hate, or bigotry in the great State of Idaho. We condemn bullies who seek to harass and silence others.”

Perspectives of Value: Using Language to Change Perceived Value of the Library

Libraries have been misunderstood and devalued throughout its history, impacting budgets and stakeholder support. Library’s themselves must reframe their thought process in representing the library and speak other people’s language to provide better understanding of what libraries do. To change perspective of value, one has to learn tactics to change minds. Whether you want to switch it up from the default intonation or you want to converse with Siri in a different language, here's how to change Siri's voice on your iPhone. After all, hearing "I'm sorry, could you say that again?" from the digital assistant is a universal experience.

• Open "Settings" on your iPhone.
• Tap "Siri & Search" and select "Siri Voice."

From here, you can choose the English-speaking accent, as well as the tone of the voice. (Apple no longer designates Siri's voice options by gender.) Keep in mind that once you tap on any voice besides the default selection, it will start downloading to your device — it's a good idea to do this while connected to Wi-Fi.

Note that certain accents will have a different number of voice tones to choose from. For example, the American English accent currently has five different voices, while the Australian English accent has only two.

• Tap "Siri & Search" and select "Language."

Then, scroll through the alphabetical list to find the language and region you'd like to change Siri's voice to. There are currently 41 different languages and dialects to choose from.

Once you select a new language, it will start downloading to your device — it's a good idea to do this while connected to Wi-Fi.
