Senior tourists in an historic town.

It’s estimated that by 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 or more. Being a member of that still vital and curious cohort, I know for sure that “advanced age” hasn’t stopped my desire to travel. In fact — it has increased it.

One survey found that 62 percent of people over 50 years old will take at least one leisure trip in 2023, with most planning multiple trips. However, one report has said many tourism businesses are unprepared to accommodate older people when they travel.

To inspire travel plans for this growing sector, experts at InsureMyTrip have listed the best destinations for senior travel around the world. They standardized the latest available data for each city in several categories including the number of senior tours, ease of walking, healthcare, public transport, and peacefulness. (Data was covered by Creative Commons 4.0 International attribution guidelines; check source material  here .)

“A significant amount of time and money goes into planning a vacation,” says Sarah Webber, Director of Marketing at InsureMyTrip. “Seniors often have more to think about when traveling; so this list can help them choose a destination that is not only enjoyable but also saf e.”

Of the top 10 cities in the index, only one is not in Europe. Bangkok, Thailand is ranked fourth in the study, while Istanbul, Athens, and Rome make up the top three.

City/Country, 1-10 : Istanbul, Turkey - Overall 8.09 out of 10; Athens, Greece - 8.03; Rome, Italy - 7.99 ; Bangkok, Thailand - 7.92; Tallinn, Estonia - 7.68; Vilnius, Lithuania - 7.68; Prague, Czech Republic - 7.61; Riga, Latvia - 7.61; Berlin, Germany - 7-53; Helsinki, Finland - 7.50

Istanbul is named the best destination for seniors. Overall, the city scores 8.09 out of 10. The Turkish city scored highly across many of the metrics, particularly for its quality of things to do, peacefulness (10), healthcare (8.41), and ease of walking (9.57).

Blue Mosque of Istanbul, famous place of visit, Turkey.

It was ranked highest for its peacefulness, with a solid 10 out of a possible 10. It’s most known for its incredible cultural landmarks, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

Narrowly missing out on the top spot is Athens, Greece with an overall score of 8.03. More than 22 percent of the population is over 65 years old so it’s no wonder that the city scores full marks for its number of senior tours (10). However, Athens missed the top spot due to lower scores for healthcare (6.89) and peacefulness (6.6).

Rome and Bangkok follow closely with overall scores of 7.99 and 7.92 respectively. Rome is ranked highly thanks to its quality of things to do (9.98) and walkability (9.04). In fact, Rome is considered one of the most walkable cities in the world, thanks to its abundance of beautiful sites within a short distance of each other.

Ostia Antica, ruins of the ancient port area of Rome, near the Rome airport.

It’s Bangkok’s ease of walking (9.97) and healthcare (9.33) that secure it a spot in the top five. However, the number of tours available for seniors (2.43) contributes to its lower score.

Tallinn, Estonia rounds up the top five cities for seniors. While this European city is less well-known than others in the top five, it has experienced a boom in tourism . The quality of things to do (9.89) and ease of walking (9.87) contribute to its high score, however, its peacefulness (5.97) and number of senior tours (0) resulted in its slightly lower ranking.

Cities least suitable for older travelers are spread across Europe, South America, and the United States. However, it’s Port Louis in Mauritius that fared the worst, with a score of 5.67. While it was ranked favorably for its quality of things to do (9.14) and ease of walking (8.89), its healthcare (0) and senior tours (0.11) contributed to its low ranking.

Santiago, Chile and Antwerp, Belgium are the second and third worst cities for senior citizens, scoring 5.85 and 6.03, respectively. Santiago’s walkability (0) is the lowest in the study, due to its rugged and hilly terrain. In fact, only a fifth of Chile’s surface is flat.

Rounding up the bottom five cities to visit for seniors are San José (6.44) and São Paulo (6.49).

Best Senior Travel Destinations in 2024

amie-clark

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. For more details on what any of these parks can offer in the way of accommodations, tours, classes, and other recreational activities, check out the National Park Service website. Also, be sure to look into the national park pass for seniors .

Biking in Badlands National Park

2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Sedona's Cathedral Rock at Sunset

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

Alaskan Coastline

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. Keep in mind that there are those who say the best time to visit this lovely, sunny city is from September to November when the temperatures are most comfortable for the majority of folks. No matter when you go, though, take your sunscreen.

The Best Months to Travel in the Best Years of Your Life

Are you thinking about a late summer vacation? You should be! There are so many wonderful reasons to take a vacation in August, September, or October. As a senior living out your retirement, you are no longer burdened with a work rigid schedule or the challenges that come with back-to-school activities. Take advantage of your freedom and read about the perks of taking a late summer vacation!

August: The World Is Calling

A cost-effective way to check off “exotic world travel” from your bucket list is to book your dream vacation for mid-to-late August. Prices start to drop as tourists head home.

While the Mediterranean countries are still basking in the hot sun, the Scandinavian countries, with their comfortable temperatures and Northern Lights, make memorable travel destinations.

August is the vacation month for many Europeans, so crowds on the streets of Paris and London start thinning. Europe offers a wealth of urban delights such as Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary, or Vienna in Austria. Since you have the luxury of leisure, instead of a hectic tour of 10 cities in 10 days, pick one spectacular location and savor the sights. Linger in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy a less demanding itinerary.

Closer to home, golfers and anglers will find the mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England abound with the top-rated greens, fast-moving streams, and quaint little towns.

Splurge with an overnight at a local B&B or a couple’s day at a spa. The latest trend in B&B hospitality includes fresh-from-the-garden meals.

With no school groups to crowd your view, enjoy the exhibits at local museums, historic homes, or gardens. Some of the best reasons to retire to Pennsylvania are also the best reasons to visit! Imagine exploring your nation’s birthplace without fighting traffic and waiting in line with other summertime tourists.

Check out end-of-the-season group rentals. Beaches and lakes make an inviting girls-only trip.

Travel Tip #1: Be sure to wear flats on cobblestone streets. Use the hotel safe for your valuables, passport, etc.

September: Water Temperatures Are Ideal, Crowds Have Checked Out

September may be the perfect month to head to the beach, as temperatures, crowds, and lodging prices all tend to start dropping around this time of year. Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

If you find that you like off-season vacation-style living, you may want to check out Acts Retirement’s 10 Reasons to Retire to South Carolina. Here’s a hint, southern-style hospitality combined with coastal views tends to make people very happy.

Take a drive or bus ride through the countryside before the leaf peepers jam the roads. Don’t miss the antique stores and roadside produce stands along the way. Local apple orchards often include a taste of fresh-made cider, slices of apple pie, and bags of your favorite Macs (not the computer!).

Bring back childhood memories with a trip to a country fair. Take a selfie with a prize-winning sheep, thrill to the roar of tractor pulls, or enjoy a nostalgic ride on a merry-go-round. Of course, you’ll ruin your diet with the pleasure of sampling funnel cakes, sausage smothered in onions and peppers, and cotton candy. But what are vacations for if not letting loose and enjoying life?

Organize your own bus trip. Limousine rental companies welcome mini-bus or six-passenger town car rentals during the week. Gather a group of history buffs, art lovers, or other like-minded day-trippers and split the rental. You are the masters of your travel itinerary and can stop along the way at cute stores and eateries.

Travel Tip #2: Leave your expensive jewelry at home.

October: Harvest Celebrations Abound

October brings harvest season, Octoberfest merriment, and dozens of other reasons to get out of the recliner. Check your local newspaper for all the Fall events in your area or enjoy a vacation filled with crisp autumn sights, sounds, and smells.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Senior Safety Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to tell your innkeeper or hotel concierge your itinerary. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Keep a cell phone on you at all times, along with your hotel and family contact information.

Retirement should be some of the best years of your life! Open yourself up to new experiences and new possibilities. You’ve worked to build the world we live in, now it’s time to pick your head up and experience it.

9 bucket list cruises for seniors and retirees.

These cruise lines appeal to older travelers with adults-only sailings, accessible staterooms and more.

Make the memories of a lifetime on a cruise for seniors and retirees.

Cruises are an often dreamt-about retirement goal, especially for long-time cruise lovers who have always been short on time. Retirement can be the ideal season of life to sail off into the sunset for several weeks, whether to far-off lands like Antarctica or a peaceful journey down the Danube. In some cases, seniors embrace their golden years by booking epic, monthslong voyages around the world.

Many small- and medium-sized ships cater to the over-60 crowd, but that doesn't mean guests will be relegated to shuffleboard and bingo games. Today's seniors still have plenty of adventures to experience and memories to make, both on board and on shore. The following cruise lines offer the top bucket list sailings for seniors and retirees.

Windstar Cruises

Anyone who has ever fancied a near-private yacht-style cruise experience will love the vibe of Windstar Cruises. Each of its yachts holds between 148 and 342 guests, with a 1-to-1.5 crew-to-guest ratio. This makes for more intimate sailings – not only because there's simply less ship to maneuver on foot, but also because Windstar ships have access to ports that megaships aren't permitted to enter. The end result is the unique ability to explore lesser-known destinations and smaller cities. While Windstar is not a strictly adults-only cruise line , you won't see any little ones on board, either. Children must be at least 8 years old to sail on the line, which further adds to the high-end ambiance.

In 2021 and 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend ships received a refresh. The three all-suite yachts were cut in half and enhanced with new suites and amenities, bringing the capacity to 312 passengers on each vessel. These Star Plus Class ships also boast new restaurants, a reimagined spa and fitness center, and more efficient engines, among other improvements. Elevators help make the Star Plus Class ships more accessible for anyone with limited mobility (note that Wind Class ships Wind Star and Wind Spirit do not have elevators). Additionally, Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend each have four wheelchair-accessible suites, which feature a smaller queen bed and reduced "wheel around" space.

On board, passengers can drop by the Open Bridge anytime for an impromptu lesson in chart reading, listen to live music in the Lounge or jump directly into the water from the Watersports Platform. Culinary highlights include restaurant Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves a twist on modern Spanish cuisine by the 10-time Michelin-starred chef, as well as culinary shore excursions with hands-on cooking classes and chef-led market tours to explore fresh local ingredients.

The cruise industry is abuzz with interest in one of Windstar's newest itineraries, which introduces passengers to the Middle East. The Inaugural Sparkling Sands & Cities itinerary sets sail in November 2023, visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Doha, Qatar; and Muscat, Oman, among others. Foodies will be especially interested in the James Beard Foundation's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf itinerary, scheduled to embark in February 2024. Windstar's other destinations include Asia, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the South Pacific and more.

Spanning seven continents via river, ocean and expedition vessels, Viking is considered a quintessential high-end cruise experience. For more than 25 years, it has provided destination-focused sailings designed to allow its guests to explore the world in supreme comfort. Its voyages particularly appeal to travelers older than 50 who are interested in science, history, culture and cuisine.

Every Viking cruise fare includes a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, onboard meals, beer and wine (with lunch and dinner service), Wi-Fi access, and all port charges and government taxes. On Viking's ocean and expedition vessels, guests also enjoy complimentary self-service laundry, access to the Thermal Suite in The Spa, high tea service, alternative restaurant dining and 24-hour room service. But the best part for older cruisers may be what's not included on Viking sailings: kids. This adults-only cruise line is dedicated to guests 18 and older.

Viking's fleet – with capacities ranging from 80 to 998 passengers (on river and ocean cruises, respectively) – feature elegant Scandinavian-style decor. The small ship cruises get closer to their destinations, spend more time in port and include more overnight stays, too.

One of Viking's newest ocean vessels, the all-veranda Viking Saturn, debuted in 2023 and focuses on European sailings. Its 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean route from Venice to Athens is particular popular, with stops in Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Greece. Another in-demand route is the Danube Christmas Delights itinerary on the Viking Longships, which visits enchanting villages, cultural capitals and iconic Christmas markets for a festive holiday cruise .

To suit their needs, guests can choose between different activity levels for walking tour-focused shore excursions. For bibliophiles, The Library on each ship is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as well as Cambridge University's Scott Polar Research Institute on the expedition vessels. Viking also holds exclusive partnerships with prestigious scientific institutions, which makes it possible for at least 36 experts – including field research scientists, mountain guides, submarine pilots and other specialists – to accompany passengers on each expedition journey.

A pavlova dessert served on board Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Billed as one of the world's most luxurious all-inclusive river cruise lines , Uniworld Boutique River Cruises features small ships with an average capacity of 120 guests and one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios on the rivers of 1-to-2.4. Part of the allure of the small ship size is a more personalized travel experience that delivers passengers to destinations ocean liners aren't able to visit (such as the Venetian Lagoon, where large ships have been banned from entry).

Uniworld ships are akin to floating boutique hotels, designed to reflect the destinations in which they sail – a vast list that includes ports in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Guests will appreciate the exquisite details on board, including unique artwork from some of the most famous artists in the world (think: Pablo Picasso and David Hockney), handmade fabrics from local artisans and handcarved furnishings.

Additionally, Uniworld's all-inclusive cruise experience includes all onboard meals, which are made with fresh farm-to-table ingredients, as well as unlimited premium spirits and fine wines. In the base fare, voyages also include a selection of shore excursions, daily entertainment, fitness centers, wellness classes, airport transfers, onboard gratuities, high-speed Wi-Fi access and more.

Uniworld makes it particularly easy to visit many of Europe's most enchanting Christmas towns on a single cruise, where passengers can visit the festive holiday markets and get all their seasonal shopping done. For seniors with more time to spare, the Rivers of the World Cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. This 55-day itinerary departs from Lima, Peru , in October 2024 and takes 40 guests across three continents via four ships to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

This upscale brand recently relaunched under A&K Travel Group with a reimagined vision. Crystal Serenity (which holds up to 740 guests) and Crystal Symphony (carrying up to 606 passengers) underwent a combined $150 million dollar refurbishment that includes updated suites and new wellness offerings at the Aurōra spa. While sailing the high seas with Crystal, passengers' needs are met at every step of the way – a perk made possible by the nearly 1-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio. A dedicated butler in every stateroom and suite will help with packing and unpacking, stocking your fridge, making restaurant reservations, booking excursions and more.

Crystal offers impressive enrichment programming, hosting high-profile lecturers with backgrounds in sports, entertainment and science. Spend some time refining your technology skills at Computer University@Sea and perfecting your ballroom dance moves, photography abilities, golf swing or bridge game. There's also a well-stocked library containing books on a range of subjects, along with board games and a pickleball court.

Dining options on board include Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian dining venue developed by Michelin-starred chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa. Unlike some other cruise lines that charge a fee for each specialty dining reservation, Crystal allows guests to enjoy one complimentary reservation per person for sailings of 11 days or less. After dinner, nightly entertainment can be found in several venues, such as live music in the Galaxy Lounge.

Crystal sails on itineraries of varying length to the Mediterranean, the Baltic, Alaska, the Caribbean, Canada, Africa and the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific, and Asia. If you're planning a bucket list trip, consider the line's 123-night 2025 World Cruise, which travels to 62 destinations across 31 countries between Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Barcelona, Spain .

The Aquamar Spa on Oceania Cruises

Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

Seniors with a penchant for epicurean delights tend to gravitate toward Oceania Cruises for their cruise vacations – it's known for having one of the finest culinary programs at sea. This cruise line focuses on small ship luxury, with seven ships currently in service carrying between 670 and 1,250 passengers each. An eighth ship, Allura, is set to debut in 2025.

Newer ships like the Vista – the first of the Allura class vessels, which joined the fleet in May 2023 – have wheelchair-accessible rooms and a plethora of onboard culinary venues. A few highlights include Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes; The Bakery at Baristas, serving freshly baked pastries; and new signature restaurant Ember, an upscale American eatery. Don't miss the Cellar Master's Wine Luncheon: a two-hour, hand-selected tasting led by the head sommelier that features a five-course menu paired with premium wines for each dish.

Senior cruisers will enjoy the Aquamar Spa's signature massage therapies, which use natural ingredients and modern techniques to release stress and tension. The Vitality Center offers a steam room, a thalassotherapy pool and heated lounge beds for extra relief. Onboard entertainment on Oceania, meanwhile, includes musical performances and immersive shows with dance numbers led by "Dancing With the Stars" choreographer Britt Stewart. The Culinary Center is a fan favorite for seniors, offering the opportunity to practice cooking techniques and learn about the unique flavor profiles of regional dishes.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a location Oceania doesn't sail to, with cruises to Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, Antarctica and more, as well as transoceanic voyages and 180-day world cruises. Oceania also provides a good overall value, thanks to its included specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions, round-trip airfare and transfers, and in-port shuttle service.

Holland America Line's Westerdam ship sails through Yakutat Bay in Alaska

Courtesy of Holland America Line

As a premium, midsize cruise line, Holland America Line offers plenty of destinations, excursions and activities aligned to an older audience. The smaller ship size, which averages around 2,000 passengers per sailing, allows for many of the ships to dock in ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, getting passengers even closer to the destinations they're visiting. For older passengers who may have limited mobility, the option to simply disembark the ship without waiting for a tender or other means of transportation can make or break a trip.

Holland America Line, though family-friendly, offers myriad excursions that are primarily adult-oriented and open to all types of adventurers. Shore excursions are clearly marked with an activity level ranging from easy to strenuous, from leisurely wine tastings and relaxing strolls through ancient towns to ATV rides through the jungle and dog-sledding on a glacier only accessible via helicopter.

Onboard entertainment and activities are plentiful; guests often enjoy the multiple music lounges and venues on each ship, along with hosted programs such as bingo and trivia. For seniors who can't get enough of the pickleball trend, Holland America Line has partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to bring branded courts and equipment on board. After all that action on the court, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon with a rejuvenating treatment. (Pro tip: Add on the Thermal Suite for access to the healing hydrotherapy circuit and heated, tiled loungers that will melt all your cares away.)

The numerous onboard dining options bring together cuisines and flavors from all over the world, with specialty restaurants featuring menus developed by a team of master chefs known as Holland America's Culinary Council. In addition to casual dining in the Lido Market and multicourse affairs in The Dining Room, each ship also features the Pinnacle Grill, an onboard steakhouse offering high-end meats and seafood. Other specialty restaurants vary by ship and may include Italian eatery Canaletto and the French-inspired Rudi's Sel de Mer.

Holland America Line sails all over the world. It does an especially nice job with its Greek island cruises and Adriatic Sea adventures. One of the line's newest ships, Rotterdam , is a crowd-pleaser with its sleek design details and an onboard art collection valued at more than $4.1 million. Still, longtime favorites like the refurbished Oosterdam and Eurodam host plenty of happy guests.

A White Night party in Monte Carlo on Azamara Onward

Courtesy of Azamara

Another all-inclusive, senior-friendly brand is Azamara, which boasts a long list of perks covered in the base fare. Your one-time payment covers meals and beverages, including standard spirits, international beers and a limited amount of wine by the glass; you can upgrade to a beverage package if you'd like access to premium brands. Other included amenities range from self-service laundry to gratuities to special cultural evenings featuring onboard or onshore performances by locals.

There are four ships in Azamara's fleet. Each carries up to 702 passengers, so they still fit comfortably into the small ship category and can access less-visited ports than larger vessels. Destinations on Azamara include ports throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, the Americas, and the Caribbean; there are also transoceanic itineraries. If spending roughly half a year on a cruise ship sounds like your ideal retirement plan, consider the Azamara World Voyage in 2025. Over 155 nights, you'll visit 37 countries.

Each of the line's ships has staterooms designed to accommodate guests with mobility limitations, and Azamara has created customized shore excursion tours for guests with disabilities as well. Accessible tours are designed for full-time wheelchair users or guests unable to navigate motor-coach steps.

There are plenty of entertainment options on board, including Club Crooner's hits from current and classic songbirds, as well as ship-specific venues with various song and dance performances. Plus, every cruise hosts a White Night signature dinner and entertainment event on the pool deck (so be sure to pack your favorite white attire). Unwind with darts, arts and crafts, pingpong, shuffleboard, trivia contests, bingo and dance lessons. Don't miss opportunities to attend lectures through the enrichment program.

A refreshment platter served by a lounge chair at Cunard Grills

Christopher Ison | Courtesy of Cunard Line

Cunard Line's ocean liners have sailed between the U.K. and New York since 1840 – and the brand's relationship with the British monarchy is integral to its heritage. As such, each ship is named after a British queen. The newest ship, Queen Anne, joins the fleet in 2024.

In keeping with its history, Cunard Line has several signature experiences that help set the brand apart. Afternoon tea is a Cunard tradition observed daily in the Queen's Room; expect white-gloved waiters serving scones and finger sandwiches alongside infused teas in silver teapots (add Champagne for an additional fee). During gala evenings, guests don tuxedos and ballgowns for a sophisticated celebration you won't soon forget. Themes range from Masquerade to Roaring 20s; you'll get a heads-up before you pack your cruise attire .

Each of the four stateroom grades has its own dedicated fine dining restaurant with excellent service and indulgent menus, though there are several casual dining options as well – not to mention specialty dining venues for an additional fee. A host of activities will keep you busy day and night, including a library, open-air pools, fitness facilities, live music, theater performances, guest speaker events, board games, film screenings, art classes, planetarium shows (on Queen Mary 2) and group dance classes.

Accessible shore experiences are available in many ports, ranging from lower activity-level tours to adaptations for wheelchair users. Accessible staterooms are available on Queen Victoria , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 ; these come with modifications like wider entryways, nonslip bathroom floors and shower seats.

A Zodiac cruise in Antarctica with Aurora Expeditions ship Greg Mortimer

Scott Portelli | Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Nothing says "once-in-a-lifetime" quite like embarking on an expedition to the world's most remote destinations – and, specifically, to Antarctica. For cruisers looking to explore this far-off land, Aurora Expeditions is one of the most trusted names in the industry. Founded by legendary adventurer Greg Mortimer, the brand sends an education-focused expedition team on each voyage, with a ratio of about one team member per every eight passengers. With an average of just 132 cruisers on these sailings, you'll get more one-on-one time with your expedition team.

Seniors can climb aboard Aurora Expeditions' Greg Mortimer or Sylvia Earle ship for innovative itineraries to the Great White Continent. Best Vacation Ideas and Destinations for Seniors

Updated January 4, 2023

Travel tops the to-do lists of most people of retirement age and older, according to the AARP—a group that ought to know. “Research after research has shown that it’s the number-one aspiration for those 50 and older,” says Maria Gillen, director of the AARP’s travel website . “We’re big believers in the idea of travel and its benefits to relationships and health.”

Medical studies have found that those benefits include healthier hearts and brains as well as a reduced risk of depression. Not to mention what a good vacation can do for your social media feeds.

But where to go? While the circumstances of those 65 and older vary widely with regard to budget, interests, and physical abilities, we think you’ll find a few enticing options among the 10 senior-friendly spots that follow. We’ve thrown in some expert tips along the way, too.

Ooh Aah Point at the Grand Canyon in Arizona

GOOD FOR : adventure, discounts, road trips, multigenerational fun

No matter where you land on the outdoorsy spectrum—from those who peer into the Grand Canyon from the rim (pictured above) to those who paddle through it on a canoe—the wonders of the U.S. national parks system are accessible to visitors with a range of inclinations and physical abilities. Not every traveler over 65 will want to haul herself up the sheer rock face of El Capitan at Yosemite. But how about a ranger-led nature walk amid the geysers of Yellowstone ? Or a scenic drive past forests, wildflowers, and maybe a black bear or two in the Great Smoky Mountains ? For a onetime fee of $80, Americans aged 62 or older can get the National Park Service's  lifetime senior pass  to experience all the natural splendor they could ever want to see.

Beach in Cuba

GOOD FOR : relaxation, low physical activity

“Our research for travel trends,” says Gillen of the AARP, “shows that a top motivator is relaxing and rejuvenating—this idea of wanting to get away from normal everyday obligations.” If taking it easy is what you’re after, the Caribbean supplies an ideal setting, with its velvety sands, sky-blue waters, and flip-flop-friendly weather. Those who have trouble getting around might want to see the region via ocean cruise. All the major lines have worked to make their ships and excursions more accessible for all passengers (if you have specific needs, call ahead to let the cruise company know). A cruise is one of the easiest ways to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba  (pictured above) happen, too. To rent wheelchairs and other mobility equipment for a cruise, visit Scootaround or Special Needs at Sea .

And for some destination inspiration, our features on our favorite islands in the Bahamas , beaches on Antigua , and tourist-free experiences on Barbados should give you a good start.

Cruise ship in Juneau, Alaska

GOOD FOR : easy pace, low to high activity level

A cruise is also a great way for seniors to journey through scenic swathes of Germany , Austria , and Hungary , courtesy of iconic European waterways such as the Danube and the Rhine . “River cruises allow you to have a more intimate experience and see more places,” the AARP’s Gillen points out, referring to itineraries that string together up-close views of bankside castles, vineyards, storybook villages, and showstopping cities including Vienna and Budapest . Yet despite the multitude of sights, the pace on deck is nice and easy, with picturesque landscapes scrolling by like the world’s most impressive stage backdrop. Of course, travelers craving more action can opt for excursions involving wine tastings, opera performances, and bike tours—many with electric-assist bikes for those who need a little added pedal power on hills and steep medieval streets. Pictured: Cochem Castle along the Rhine River in Germany

New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe

GOOD FOR : healthy climate, outdoor adventure, arts and culture

Santa Fe ’s Spanish Colonial adobe buildings and magical setting in the foothills of the rose-tinted Sangre de Cristo Mountains have made New Mexico’s capital city a magnet for artists and other scenery hounds for generations. Additional lures for the 65-and-over set: a warm, dry climate and a compact and walkable historic downtown centered on a leafy plaza that dates to the early 1600s. You don’t have to stroll far to find scores of art galleries, museums paying tribute to the region’s rich Native American traditions, and restaurants serving Southwestern cuisine (devotees of chocolate and chili peppers take note). Depending on the time of year, rugged types can go hiking or skiing in the surrounding mountains.

Machu Picchu in Peru

GOOD FOR : bucket lists, adventure, group tours

The epic way to approach  Peru ’s mysterious citadel in the Andes is a hike along the Inca Trail. But if an arduous trek in high altitudes doesn’t sound like it's for you, that doesn’t mean you have to scratch Machu Picchu off your bucket list. A train from Cusco will get you there, too, and you’ll be treated to spectacular views of lush valleys and snow-capped peaks along the way. A guided group tour can help not only with planning and accommodating specific needs but also with meeting new people. “One thing we do see [about] the value of package tours,” says Gillen of the AARP, “is being able to socialize with others”—especially during solo trips, “a topic that we’ve seen pop in our online community.” You can browse hundreds of available Machu Picchu tours at a clearinghouse site such as Travelstride , which even has a filter for tours marketed to travelers 50 and up .

Note : Keep tabs on the level of political turmoil in Peru before booking a trip there, and consider purchasing travel insurance to protect yourself.

Moraine Lake at Banff National Park in Alberta, Canaa

GOOD FOR : train trips, outdoor activities, photography

Another stunning natural landscape that can easily be appreciated from the comfort of a train car is the Canadian Rockies . The top-of-the-line option would be to book a seat aboard the Rocky Mountaineer , which offers luxury rail journeys featuring gourmet meals, plush berths, and glass-domed carriages for unobstructed views of western Canada’s imposing peaks and glacier-fed lakes so perfectly turquoise you’d swear they’d been Photoshopped. Prices for the ride are sometimes as steep as the Rockies, but you can piece together a more affordable alternative by booking your own tickets on  Via Rail , Canada’s answer to Amtrak. Routes from Alberta to British Columbia link national parks, wildlife preserves, ski runs, and hiking trails in Jasper , Kamloops , and other mountain beauties. Pictured: Moraine Lake at Banff National Park in Alberta

Golden Buddha statues at a temple in Bangkok

GOOD FOR : budget, relaxation, food, new experiences

“Cost is a top barrier to travel for those 60 and over,” the AARP’s Gillen told us—and come to think of it, cost is a big barrier for those under 60 as well. She recommends weekend road trips for budget travelers looking for domestic destinations. To find bargains overseas, it pays to go where you can benefit from a favorable exchange rate. The U.S. dollar stretches a long way in Southeast Asia right now, making upscale restaurants, spas, and four-star hotels sometimes remarkably affordable. With its beaches, Buddhist temples, floating markets, and the nonstop excitement of Bangkok , Thailand is an enticing choice for seniors who crave variety, culture, and a little relaxation, but would like to avoid completely scrambling that nest egg. Residents' traditional respect for elders is an added bonus.

Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida

GOOD FOR : warm climate, history, getting around

America’s oldest continuously occupied European settlement is a must for history buffs, who can explore what remains of more than two centuries of Spanish rule, starting in 1565. A compact, magnolia-lined historic district—four blocks of St. George Street , from King Street to the Old City Gate, constitute the heart of it—make the sights easy to see for those who can’t walk far. And convenient hop-on, hop-off sightseeing trolleys (often with discounts for seniors) make it even easier. Good places to hop off include the well-preserved 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos masonry fortification, the Victorian curio-stuffed Lightner Museum   (pictured), and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park . (Hey, it can’t hurt.)

Elephants at Kruger National Park in South Africa

GOOD FOR : bucket lists, photography, group tours

We’d wager that “African safari” appears on more bucket lists than any other type of vacation—and with good reason. Who doesn’t want to lay eyes on lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras on their home turf? The good news for older travelers with reduced physical abilities is that wildlife-viewing tours are undertaken in all-terrain vehicles rather than on foot (that’s also good news for travelers who’d rather not become brunch fare for tigers). The ride can get bumpy, though, so for the sake of your joints you might want to pick a game preserve that has a well-oiled tourism infrastructure to accommodate a wide range of visitors. That makes South Africa’s Kruger National Park an obvious choice. And after you’ve spotted the Big 5 (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and Cape buffaloes), you can use the dollar-friendly exchange rate toward adventures in other parts of South Africa. Take your pick among vineyard tours, beach getaways, and the tram ride up Table Mountain in Cape Town . Your once-in-a-lifetime trip could turn into the first in a string of repeat visits.

Benefits of Traveling for Seniors

Traveling provides numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits for seniors.

  • One of the primary advantages is staying active and maintaining overall health. Exploring new destinations encourages walking, sightseeing, and trying new activities, which contribute to improved cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength.
  • Travel also stimulates mental health by keeping the mind sharp and engaged. Visiting new places challenges cognitive skills, such as navigating unfamiliar environments, learning about different cultures and histories, and practicing language skills. This mental stimulation can help delay age-related cognitive decline and improve memory.
  • Emotionally, senior vacations offer opportunities for socialization and meeting new people. Traveling with friends and family, or joining senior travel groups makes the journey more enjoyable, strengthens relationships, and reduces the risk of social isolation.
  • Furthermore, travel experiences enrich seniors’ lives by providing lasting memories and stories to share with loved ones.
  • Lastly, traveling provides seniors with a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. Successfully navigating new destinations and trying new experiences builds confidence and fosters personal growth.
  • Additionally, seniors who travel are more likely to maintain a positive outlook on life and a greater sense of purpose.

Tips for Finding Age-Friendly Accommodations

Finding the right accommodations can make all the difference in your comfort and enjoyment when planning a trip. For seniors, it’s important to find age-friendly accommodations catering to their needs. Here are some tips for finding age-friendly accommodations:

  • Look for hotels that offer amenities for seniors: Many hotels offer amenities specifically designed for seniors, such as grab bars in the bathroom, non-slip shower mats, and wheelchair accessibility. When booking a hotel, ask about these amenities and choose a hotel that meets your needs.
  • Consider the location: When choosing accommodations, consider the location and accessibility to local attractions. Look for hotels located in safe and walkable areas, close to public transportation, and with easy access to restaurants and shops.
  • Read reviews: Before booking accommodations, read reviews from other travelers to get an idea of the quality of the hotel and its amenities. Look for reviews from other seniors to better understand whether the hotel is age-friendly.
  • Book early: To ensure that you get the accommodations you need, it’s important to book early. This is especially important during peak travel seasons when hotels can fill up quickly.
  • Consider alternative accommodations: Besides hotels, many other types of accommodations may be more age-friendly, such as vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, and senior living communities. Be sure to research all of your options to find the best accommodations for your needs.

Oh, I so disagree. Spread your wings and do something you’ve always wanted to do. Hike in Nepal, Go to an island in Thailand, walk the Great Wall. These things above are okay, but adventure is my middle name.

Different strokes for different folks! Thanks for adding additional ideas!

15 Trips You Need to Take as Soon as You Retire

best travel destinations for 70 year olds

No more waiting for your annual vacation, then filling it end-to-end until you drag yourself back to work needing another week off. You are retired — and if you're reading this, you probably love to travel. With the youngest baby boomers turning 59 this year, and the first group around age 77, most members of that influential cohort are likely retired or semi-retired. According to AARP's 2022 Travel Trends survey , the majority of travelers over age 50 (67 percent) planned to travel in 2022, taking at least four trips throughout the year. And since 2023 has brought record-breaking travel numbers , it's likely that even more boomers are hitting the road this year.

The AARP survey also indicated that, despite lingering worry about the spread of COVID-19, 77 percent of travelers do feel it's safe enough to vacation. And while older travelers were more likely to plan a domestic trip last year, about 43 percent of people ages 50 and up planned to travel both within the U.S. and abroad.

If you're among the retirees ready to get away, your options are vast and varied. With your job in the rearview mirror, and the open highway ahead, how about a road trip? This might appeal if you've been longing for the freedom of getting behind the wheel and taking off. Or, perhaps you escaped employment with barely enough energy to pick up your last check and bid goodbye to envious coworkers. A resort destination will let you recover without lifting a finger. (Well, except waving one to summon your next poolside cocktail.) Or, are you looking for a trip to the other side of the world? No problem.

Once you realize you have the time, energy, and travel budget, the next step is to get planning. Whether you want rest or excitement, solitude or crowds, low cost or luxury, here are some ideas for retirement travel.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Billed as "America's Favorite Drive," this spectacular 469-mile route joins Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Take as much or as little time as you want on this scenic ride, which averages between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation. Delight in the extraordinary views from roadside pullover areas, or hike a few of the 80-plus trails. From campgrounds to upscale log homes, plenty of lodging is available, and you can enjoy traditional music, culture, biking, history, nature, and even golf along the way.

In Asheville, North Carolina, explore the majestic Biltmore Estate , created in 1895 by George Vanderbilt. Self-guided tours take guests through the 250-room house and garden, described as a "time travel experience." You can spend the night at the Estate's hotel, called The Inn, or in your own cottage. All the information you need to plan your excursion can be found on the Blue Ridge Parkway website , plus they offer a smartphone app that includes scenic and historic sites, lodging, and activities to guide you along the way.

Rocky Mountaineer

Want to leave the driving to someone else? A luxurious journey through the Canadian Rockies aboard one of Rocky Mountaineer's comfortable, glass-domed railway cars might be your ticket. Choose from several options, like the Grand Adventure Circle Journey . This 11-night trip includes five days aboard the Rocky Mountaineer and overnight stays in Whistler, Jasper, Lake Louise, and more.

The journey begins in Vancouver with time to explore and rest. The next morning, you'll board the Rocky Mountaineer and travel British Columbia's Sea-to-Sky Corridor on your way to the resort town of Whistler. Up next: Wind your way through farmland and stunning canyons en route to Quesnel, then to Jasper National Park for a day of leisure. Then, to get to Lake Louise, you'll travel via the scenic Icefields Parkway , where you can ride an Ice Explorer to the middle of Athabasca Glacier. Upon arriving at Lake Louise, you'll have time to explore before heading to Banff and back to Vancouver via Kamloops. More Rocky Mountaineer itinerary options are listed online .

Chris Marrinaccio/Travel + Leisure

With a flight time between 16 and 21 hours from the U.S. and a huge area to see, a visit to Australia, Travel + Leisure 's 2020 Destination of the Year , doesn't fit most vacation schedules – until you have no schedule, that is.

In metropolitan Sydney , tour the iconic Opera House and then see it from another perspective on a harbor cruise. Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or climb to the apex of its steel arch if you have lots of energy and an extra $350. Get up close and personal with Australia's unique wildlife on Kangaroo Island's nature reserve and see koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, fur seals, penguins, and kookaburras.

For marine wildlife, the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia is home to countless species of colorful fish, mollusks, starfish, turtles, dolphins, and sharks. Melbourne 's Great Ocean Road, at Australia's southeastern tip, is the place to see rugged seashore, jagged cliffs, sandy beaches, and even the dense Otway rainforest. Don't miss Brisbane, Queensland's capital, set along its picturesque river and crossed by the Story Bridge.

Cruise the Yarra River in Melbourne for great views of the city's landmarks and skyline. Seasons are opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, of course, so most travelers to the southern part of Australia time their visit during their summer, from November through March.

Southeast Asia River Cruise

If this part of the world is new to you, a river cruise will offer adventure, luxury, and convenience, with all the arrangements made for you. Several companies, including AmaWaterways , offer Mekong River cruises that stop in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. The seven-day cruise in southern Vietnam and Cambodia can be extended to include Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Angkor Wat in Siem Riep.

With an extension, you'll spend a few days in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital city, and enjoy a blend of ancient temples and modern skyscrapers. An excursion to Halong Bay follows, where you'll board a ship to sail among the magnificent limestone rock formations and spend the night in modern comfort.

Next, you'll take a short flight south to Siem Reap in Cambodia for a visit to Angkor Wat , a massive temple complex built in the early 12th century to honor the Hindu god, Vishnu. After exploring Angkor Wat, board your river ship for the seven-day Mekong River cruise.

So far away and with such a huge expanse of land (and several major cities) to explore, China may have been a destination you waited to visit. And now, you have the time.

Start your trip in Hong Kong, where you'll find great shopping, delicious dining, and stunning views of the skyline and harbor from the top of Victoria Peak. Ride the Star Ferry to Kowloon to see more of the iconic harbor.

Then, fly to Beijing, China's imperial capital, where you can view historic Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the world's largest surviving ancient palace complex. Walk along a portion of the 4,000-mile-long Great Wall , enjoying the panoramic views and contemplating its role in China's long history. Take a short flight to Xi'an to see the wondrous Terracotta Army , more than 7,000 life-sized clay sculptures of warriors and horses buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Your next stop might be Shanghai , China's largest city and financial center, where you can stroll along the Bund, its famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Be sure to sample the specialty xiao long bao (soup dumplings) at a few of the restaurants that claim theirs to be the best. You can be the judge.

If you're fascinated by the ancient civilization of Egypt and have always wanted to see the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Nile , this could be the time to make your plans. The Grand Egyptian Museum is set to in early 2024, with more than 100,000 artifacts and about 20,000 on display, including 5,400 objects retrieved from Tutankhamun's tomb.

Even if you usually travel on your own, you may want to consider a well-planned group excursion that takes care of the transfers, entry tickets, meals, tours, and other arrangements. For example, Adventures by Disney offers 10-day trips to Egypt that make planning simple. The itinerary includes a trip to the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx, snorkeling in the Red Sea via private yacht, and a three-night cruise on the Nile. A papyrus-making demonstration and a hieroglyphics workshop is also part of the experience.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

If your goal is to be spoiled and rejuvenated in luxurious surroundings, Scottsdale has many options for you. The Andaz offers suites and bungalows, and for even more privacy, the retreat's secluded cluster of bungalows has its own swimming pool. Hotel Valley Ho , faithfully restored with contemporary comforts and mid-century modern style, greets guests with classic furnishings that will take you back to the 1950s.

Scottsdale is about 20 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, so you can start relaxing as soon as you land. When you're sufficiently restored and ready to see the city, you'll find walkable Old Town 's art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and craft breweries to be convenient and fun. Be on the lookout for One-Eyed Jack, a huge stylized jackrabbit — just one example of Scottsdale's commitment to public art.

The Museum of the West features an extraordinary collection of paintings, sculpture, artifacts, ceramics, photography, and drawings. Meanwhile, the fascinating Museum of Contemporary Art offers a variety of installations, paintings, photography, and videos. Visitors to Scottsdale should be sure to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West , his winter home and architecture school. Tours reveal not only the home, furnishings, and structures, but also much about Wright's life and personality.

Iceland and the Northern Lights

What travel wish list doesn't include seeing the aurora borealis? The challenge with getting a good look at the mysterious northern lights is that they don't appear on schedule. Certain times of year (September through March) are better for viewing with the long winter nights. Travelers also need to avoid nights with a bright moon. Now that you have time to wait patiently for the spectacular show in the sky, why not plan a trip to Iceland?

While you're there, don't miss the Blue Lagoon . Book a day visit or stay in one of the hotels , like the Silica Hotel or the five-star luxury Retreat Hotel. The 102-degree milky blue water is said to be excellent for the skin, and its scenery and unique waters make it Iceland's most-visited attraction. You might even be lucky enough to see the northern lights as you luxuriate in the warm water of the lagoon.

Hotel Ranga , a family-owned boutique that celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, is a popular place to stay while you wait for the northern lights to appear. Their on-site observatory, outdoor hot tubs, aurora alert service, cozy rooms, gourmet meals, and hospitality make the anticipation relaxing and enjoyable.

Looking for lush green scenery, inviting pubs, and friendly folks? Want to learn more about your ancestors or discover the towns they once called home? A trip to Ireland will fit the bill.

Start in Dublin, where you can visit Trinity College to admire the architecture and ancient manuscripts, prison-turned-museum Kilmainham Gaol to hear about Ireland's history, and the Guinness Storehouse to pour a proper pint and enjoy a 360-degree view of the city. Join a pub crawl and hear traditional Irish music while checking out the lively bar scene.

Other lovely cities worth exploring in the country include Kinsale, Belfast, Dingle, Killarney, and Kilkenny. Drive the 110-mile Ring of Kerry along the Iveragh Peninsula for breathtaking views, historical sites, waterfalls, beaches, and monuments. Stay in a castle like Adare Manor , Dromoland Castle , or Carton House .

The seaport town of Cobh in County Cork was the departure point of the Titanic, and a tour of the White Star Line ticket office is a moving and memorable experience. If you plan to drive, remember that you'll be on the left side of the road, and vehicles have right-hand drive — a bit confusing, especially with a standard shift car. Opt for an automatic vehicle or a driver for comfortable, safer touring.

Laura La Monaca/Travel + Leisure

This island just off Italy's toe is another exciting locale for those seeking ancestral towns. Plus, you can explore it while sniffing out the perfect cannoli or pasta alla Norma. Many Italian-Americans trace their roots to Sicily as a result of migrations that occurred in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Palermo, Sicily's capital, is a lively city with colorful outdoor markets, spectacular cathedrals, and delectable street food, including fried rice balls called arancini . Enjoy them with Sicilian wines, many from vineyards near Mount Etna, Sicily's active volcano.

Unique and inviting cities along the coastline and in Sicily's interior offer something for everyone, including ancient ruins at Agrigento, Siracusa, Selinunte, and Taormina — testament to the history of this island, which has been occupied at various times by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and others.

Miles of gorgeous coastline and beaches, impressive architecture, fresh seafood, and friendly people are just a few reasons to visit Sicily. Travel between cities can be managed by train, bus, car, or private driver. If you rent a car, note that main highways are generally in good condition and well-marked, unlike some local roads. Highway speeds are fast, and Sicilian drivers seem to love tailgating. Within the cities, streets are narrow, and parking is nearly nonexistent. You can usually find public parking on the edge of towns in a parcheggio .

With multigenerational travel becoming more popular, you might want to have youngsters or other family members join you. Adventures by Disney's 10-day South Africa trip begins in Cape Town and includes stops at Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, Knysna Elephant Park, Kapama Game Reserve, and more.

Lovers of history, religion, and current events will enjoy touring this tiny country, which is about the size of New Jersey. Tourism is increasing, and with the influx of visitors, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority has created Israel Pass , which provides discounts and easier access to national parks, nature reserves, and famous attractions.

Your first stop should be Tel Aviv, known for its beaches, clubs, and thriving arts community. Stay in The Norman , a conveniently located boutique hotel that's housed in a luxuriously restored historic building. Be sure to visit the Carmel Market — Tel Aviv's most popular — for unique textiles, spices, herbs, tea, and fresh foods.

Less than an hour's drive north is Caesarea, a coastal town offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean along with Roman ruins dating back to its days as the area's largest port. Jerusalem, a sacred city for Christians, Jews, and Muslims, must be on your itinerary. See the iconic Dome of the Rock shrine, Jerusalem's most recognizable landmark and an example of Islamic architecture. Visit the site of the crucifixion, the Temple Mount, and the Western Wall.

The magnificent King David Hotel would be a treat, even if only for dinner or a cocktail and a glimpse of its stunning view of Old Jerusalem. A range of tour groups and prices make visiting Israel convenient as well as memorable. Pro tip: Consider concierge service to expedite your transfer from Ben Gurion Airport.

United States Coast-to-Coast Road Trip

"See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet!" You might have heard the song, and it remains good advice for travelers with lots of time.

There are so many sights to see and so many ways to drive across America. Of course, you can take Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles . For nostalgia, small towns, kitschy landmarks, and a view of the Grand Canyon, this is the way to go. Start or end your journey on the Santa Monica Pier, the western end of the fabled road. Be sure to take a photo at the "Santa Monica 66 - End of the Trail" sign.

Or, try the southern route linking San Diego , California, and Savannah , Georgia. You'll pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Cutting across the middle on Route 50, which links Maryland and northern California, you'll see the Sierra Nevada, Appalachian, and Rocky Mountains, deserts, plains, and farmland. Washington, D.C. , the world's tallest arch in St. Louis, and Lake Tahoe are other highlights on this route.

So, grab a map and a traveling companion and plan your cross-country trip. Renting a vehicle one-way and flying back could be just the ticket.

Air Travel Tips and Tricks

Flying is often the quickest and most convenient way to travel, but it can be stressful and confusing. Here are a few things you can do to make the experience easier and more pleasant:

1. Ask about senior discounts .

Some airlines offer reduced fares for older adults, although they might not widely advertise such fares. For instance, Delta has a senior discount in some markets, but it's not available online; you can only get it by calling the reservations department. United Airlines offers special senior fares on some routes. However, you may need to call and ask what's available (and be sure to check if it's any cheaper than the normal adult rate). Notably, Southwest Airlines has a senior discount in the form of reduced Anytime fares for adults over age 65. These senior fares are refundable and can be booked either online or by phone.

2. Check in online if possible.

Most airlines allow you to check in for your flight through their websites or mobile apps up to 24 hours in advance. In most cases, it's better to check in online rather than at the airport. Some budget airlines, such as Spirit, charge a fee to check in at the airline counter. Plus, checking in from your computer or phone lets you save time at the airport. You can bypass the ticket counter and go straight through security to your departure gate if you only have carry-on luggage. (However, you might have to check in at the airport counter if you are requesting a wheelchair or other airline personnel assistance.)

One of the biggest advantages of checking in online is being able to select your seat. To take full advantage of this, you should check in early for your flight. That's because the earlier you check in, the more seats you will have to choose from. So if you're hoping to sit near the front of the plane or avoid the middle seat, it's a good idea to check in online as early as you can.

Keep in mind that Southwest Airlines does things a little differently. It assigns boarding positions rather than specific seats. Depending on what type of fare you purchase and when you check in, you will be assigned to A, B, or C zone, with a number between 1 and 60 (where A1 gets on first and C60 gets on last). Your place in the queue determines when you get to board; once you are on the plane, you are free to choose any available seat. So on Southwest, checking in sooner will not get you a specific seat, but it will get you a better boarding position.

3. Print your boarding pass.

Technically, if you check in online and have a smartphone , you don't need to print a boarding pass in most cases. You can simply show the agent the electronic boarding pass that was sent to you when you checked in. (Note that an e-ticket is not the same as a boarding pass.) However, it's wise to have a paper copy of your travel documents in case your device runs out of power, or there is some other type of technical problem.

You can print your pass on your home computer when you check in online, at the self-serve check-in kiosks in the airport terminal, or the airline's ticket counter. The good news is that you do not have to check in twice on connecting flights on Southwest or most other airlines; you should receive all of your boarding passes at once.

4. Get to the airport early.

Even if you have checked in online, you should be at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to take off. (Allow at least three hours for an international flight.) That's especially important if you are checking baggage, since you will need to drop off your luggage at a designated counter by a certain time.

If you are traveling domestically and only have hand luggage, things are a bit simpler. In such a case, if you check in online, all you have to do at the airport is go through security and find your departure gate. However, you never know how long the security line will be, so it's still wise to arrive early. And if you have mobility issues, be sure to allow for extra time so that you're not rushed.

5. Speed through security.

Older travelers can get a bit of a break when it comes to security screening. For instance, if they're over 75, seniors do not have to take shoes off at airport security (although the shoes may still be swabbed for traces of explosives). They can also leave light jackets on.

Medically required liquids and gels are not subject to the same size restrictions as other carry-on liquids. However, they need to be screened separately, so you can speed things up by packing them in a Ziploc bag that is separate from your other liquids. Keep the medications in an easily accessible part of your carry-on bag. Tell the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer about them when you get to the checkpoint.

If you have a disability or medical issue, you may want to fill out a TSA Notification Card so you can communicate your condition clearly and discreetly. For example, if you have a metal hip implant, you can note it on the card so that the officer will know that you are likely to set off the metal detector. In that case, you would be subject to a pat-down or screening via a full-body scanner.

Travelers of any age are eligible for TSA PreCheck , which gives them the privilege of not removing their shoes, belts, jackets, laptops, or liquids during screening at participating airports. To get TSA PreCheck, you must apply online, go through a short in-person appointment involving fingerprinting and a background check, and pay the $85 fee. (Some credit cards cover this fee or allow you to use frequent flyer points to pay for it; check with your credit card issuer.) If approved, you will be covered for five years.

If you travel internationally, Global Entry works just like TSA PreCheck, with the added benefit of expedited lines for customs and immigration upon re-entering the U.S. It costs $100 for five years.

6. Try to get expedited boarding.

Being one of the first to board a plane lets you get settled in your seat sooner and avoid being shuffled along in a long lineup of people. It also gives you a better chance of finding space for your bag in the overhead compartment. In some cases, boarding earlier can also mean securing a better seat.

Here's how you can try to make sure you take your seat early, depending on the airline you use:

Older adults with disabilities can get on the plane during preboarding. You can also avoid long lines by purchasing Priority Boarding, which lets you board ahead of other economy passengers. However, you cannot buy Priority Boarding if you purchase a Basic Economy fare (i.e., the cheapest one).

You can ask to be in the preboarding group if you need assistance due to a mobility challenge or other type of disability. American divides its regular boarding into nine different groups. First class, business class, and elite status customers get on first. However, you can opt to pay for Priority boarding, which gets you on with group four. As with United, Priority is not available to passengers on Basic Economy tickets.

On Delta, seniors who need extra time or help to board can take their seats during preboarding. Otherwise, you can pay $15 per flight to ensure your spot in the Main Cabin 1 group. Main Cabin 1 boards after families with young children, upper-level elite passengers, and Delta-branded credit card holders, but before most economy customers.

Passengers with disabilities are eligible to preboard the plane. Alternatively, you can choose to pay for an Even More Space seat, which comes with a few inches of extra legroom and lets you preboard. Even More Space also lets you use special security screening lines in participating airports.

Seniors can board early on Southwest in certain cases. For instance, if you need a particular type of seat due to a disability or need someone to assist you during boarding, you may get on the plane during the preboarding process. If you just need a bit of extra time to get settled, you will be permitted to board between the A and B groups.

You can also pay for Early Bird Check In to have Southwest automatically reserve a boarding position for you 36 hours before departure. While you do not have to check in yourself with Early Bird Check In, you can get your boarding pass by going online no sooner than 24 hours before your flight leaves, clicking "check in," and printing your pass. It's not crucial to do this at a certain time, since your spot in the queue will have already been assigned. Early Bird Check In does not guarantee A group boarding. However, it does boost your chance of securing a better boarding position. Some people believe Early Bird Check In is worth it if you have strong feelings about where you sit and don't want to stress about having to check in exactly 24 hours before your flight.

7. Don't be afraid to bring a mobility device.

Most airlines allow you to bring canes, walkers , wheelchairs, and even electric scooters along for no extra cost. If you can't walk to your seat, you can transfer from a wheelchair into a special aisle chair that is narrow enough to fit down the aircraft's aisle.

Depending on the size of your device, you can bring it right into the cabin and store it in an overhead bin, under the seat in front of you, or in a separate storage area. If it doesn't fit in any of these places, the airline will check it as cargo for no additional fee. When you reach your destination, the device will be brought to the aircraft door for you unless you request to pick it up at baggage claim.

8. Get convenient and durable travel gear

Having gear that can safely, conveniently, and durably hold your belongings will help make your trip easier. Here are some good examples of travel essentials, which are available for purchase through the following Amazon affiliate links:

  • A secure and easy-to-use passport holder or travel pouch to keep essential belongings, like ID, credit cards and cash, safe and close by. One that can be worn around the neck may be especially handy for those who can be forgetful.
  • Durable, lightweight luggage that's easy to identify, pull, and carry.
  • A suitcase marker to help identify your bag from everyone else's and make it easier and quicker to pick up your belongings from luggage carousels.
  • A waterproof toiletry bag to store your personal care essentials and protect your other belongings if something containing liquid/gel/cream breaks or opens during transit.
  • Durable luggage tags to identify your checked bags if the airline tags come off, and to identify your carry-on bag in case it's misplaced or needs to be stowed after you board the plane.
  • A travel pillow and blanket can help make the trip a lot more comfortable. Planes can be cold, and the seats can be difficult to nap in. So a small pillow and blanket can help make the trip more restful and enjoyable.

How to Arrange a Trip for an Elderly Parent

It can be challenging to work out the travel details for an aging parent. There is no age limit for flying alone. However, it can be dangerous for elderly people to fly by themselves if they aren't prepared. Here are some tips to help you get your elderly mom or dad from Point A to Point B safely and comfortably:

1. Choose travel times and routes carefully.

It's best to go for the shortest and most direct route, even if it costs a little more. Your goal should be to keep things as simple as possible, so the fewer connections, the better. And pay attention to the type of aircraft your mom or dad will be on: Some airports do not use jetways for smaller planes and instead require passengers to climb a set of stairs to board. (However, federal law stipulates that planes with at least 19 seats must have mechanical ramps to assist with boarding.)

Also, try to arrange travel times for when your parent is most alert and energetic. That might mean avoiding early morning or late afternoon departures if possible.

2. Make special requests by phone (and follow up).

You can book a trip online. However, it's sometimes easier to make special requests like wheelchair assistance, bulkhead seats with extra legroom, or expedited boarding if you speak to a human being. Proper arrangements can be especially important if your parent will need help getting to their seat rather than just to the plane.

Airlines are required by law to provide wheelchair service for free to any traveler who requests it. If your loved one has challenges with walking but doesn't need a wheelchair, ask if they can ride on an electric cart through the airport.

If your mom or dad uses portable oxygen, find out if the airline requires any medical documentation to transport it. Also, be sure to let the airline know of any special dietary restrictions your loved one has.

Don't forget to reconfirm all arrangements as you get closer to the travel date. The extra effort is worth it for your peace of mind.

3. Pack appropriately.

It's a good idea to encourage your parent to pack as light as possible. Your loved one may be able to avoid checking in luggage and waiting for it at the baggage carousel if everything fits in one carry-on-sized roller bag. If they check a bag, remind them not to put any important documents or medications in the checked bag. Those should go in hand luggage. Also, all liquids should be easily accessible for security screening .

If your senior has a cell phone, make sure it's programmed with your contact information, as well as any emergency contact numbers they may need. If your parent does not have a cell phone, consider getting a prepaid one for the trip. If necessary, show him or her how to place and answer a call. You might also want to write down the steps he or she should follow to get in touch with you.

4. Arrange transportation to the airport.

If you cannot drive your parent to the airport yourself, you could book a taxi or arrange a ride with a service like Uber or Lyft. Organizations like ITN America and Papa offer transportation services specifically for seniors. Another option is to contact a volunteer driving program in your parent's local area.

5. Get your parent to the gate.

Did you know that you can accompany your elderly parent to the gate if you obtain an escort pass? To request a pass, go to the airline check-in counter with your parent and present a government-issued photo ID. (It sometimes helps to call about a pass a day or two before the flight.) An escort pass lets you take your parent through security and to their departure gate.

If you can't be at the airport with your parent, talk to the airline about arranging free assistance. You could also choose to hire a concierge service like MUrgency or Royal Airport Concierge Service to help your senior manage luggage, check in, and get through security screening. And if you're willing to spend more for a dedicated escort, Flying Companions can provide full-service travel assistance, including a companion who will accompany your parent from their home to their final destination.

6. Coordinate arrival.

Make sure a family member or friend will meet your parent at the destination airport. Many airlines will provide an escort pass to allow you to meet a disabled passenger at the arrival gate. However, that only works for domestic flights. Because of customs and immigration rules, you cannot go to an incoming international flight gate. If your mom or dad needs help to clear customs, talk to the airline about having a wheelchair attendant meet them at the gate.

How to Travel With an Aging Relative

Shared travel is a fantastic way to create lasting family memories. However, traveling with an older parent does require careful planning. Start by reviewing the above tips about choosing travel times and routes , making requests for assistance , and packing appropriately . Then read the following tips to learn how you travel with an elderly parent:

1. Select a destination.

Try to pick somewhere that appeals to both of you. What's on your mom or dad's bucket list? How can you make that happen?

Remember that if your senior has mobility issues, you may want to avoid cobblestone streets and hotels with no elevators. It's also a good idea to research the whereabouts of hospitals and pharmacies at your destination so that you can be prepared in the event of a medical emergency.

2. Check with the doctor.

Before planning any trip:

  • Ask your parent's doctor if your parent is physically capable of handling the trip.
  • Get advice about how to manage your parent's medical conditions during travel.
  • Learn how to adapt the medication regimen for a different time zone.
  • Find out if vaccinations are necessary.
  • Get a signed note from the doctor that details all of your mom or dad's prescriptions.
  • You might also want to ask the doctor to provide a statement about things like knee or hip implants your parent has that could set off security alarms.

3. Consider an organized tour or cruise .

When it comes to senior travel, tours can be an excellent choice because they offer convenient ways to get around unfamiliar areas. Many are geared to the needs of older adults but also accommodate younger travelers. WheelchairTravel.org outlines some of the best wheelchair-accessible tours around the world, and offers resources to help with booking a trip where your mobility needs are met.

Cruises are also very popular multigenerational trips because they are virtually all-inclusive vacations. Seniors and their families can unpack once, see many different ports, and take advantage of unlimited dining and entertainment. Plus, many shore excursions are organized with the mobility-challenged in mind. And most ships have wheelchair-accessible public areas and staterooms as well as onboard doctors and medical facilities.

4. Get travel insurance.

This is essential if you plan to leave the country. Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover your elderly parent outside of the U.S. (although a few Medicare Advantage plans will). So you should look for a policy that covers him or her in case of a medical emergency abroad.

You should also consider insurance if your trip involves high prepaid non-refundable costs, such as a cruise or bus tour. Travel insurance may allow you to get some of your money back if you or your parent gets ill and can't travel, or if a hurricane disrupts your cruise plans.

According to the AARP, travel insurance is best purchased from a broker rather than directly from a tour operator or cruise line. You can research costs and coverage at sites like SquareMouth and InsureMyTrip .

If you are traveling domestically and all you have reserved are airfare and hotel rooms, you may be able to cancel without penalty or get some kind of credit. In a case like that, you might not need insurance. And check the benefits on your credit card before purchasing any insurance; you may have enough protection that an insurance policy is unnecessary.

5. Plan to take it easy.

Don't pack too much into your itinerary. Rest time is important for everyone, but especially for older adults. Allow for afternoon naps if your parent is used to taking them. Try to limit excessive walking and be prepared to take more breaks than you normally would. Also, be sure to budget extra time to navigate attractions, especially if you must search for elevators or ramps as alternatives to stairs. Patience is key.

6. Maintain a routine.

Some seniors are adventurous, but others find comfort in the familiar. If your mom or dad has dementia or some sort of cognitive impairment, it's wise to stick to a predictable schedule as much as possible. Eating and resting at the usual times can lower your elderly parent's stress level and help keep him or her from becoming agitated.

7. Set aside time for yourself.

Try to plan activities that you can do with your parent and a few that you can each enjoy on your own. When booking accommodations, consider getting separate rooms so that you can each have some private time apart. Or choose a type of vacation that lets you pursue different activities and get together for meals. After all, no rule says you have to do everything together. Giving each other some space can go a long way toward the success of a holiday.

How to Travel as an Older Adult

Smiling man with a grey beard and a hat standing on a city street holding a map and pulling a rolling suitcase

You travel as a senior by assessing your needs, wants, and priorities (and taking advantage of discounts whenever possible). Read through all the tips in the above sections, then have a look at these travel suggestions for older adults:

1. Always ask about senior discounts.

It never hurts to ask, and it could score you some good deals that aren't even advertised. Consider joining organizations like the AARP , American Seniors Association , or Association of Mature American Citizens , all of which offer travel-related discounts to their members. Keep in mind that these are lobbying groups that take specific stands on political issues. If you disagree with a group's viewpoint, you might want to pass on becoming a member.

2. Go in off-peak seasons.

You probably have the flexibility to travel when it suits you. Avoiding the prime tourist season can help you save money and avoid crowds. But make sure you pack for unpredictable weather and research some indoor activities so that you can stay out of the cold or rain. Also, be aware that some museums and other tourist sites have limited hours or are completely closed off-season.

3. Get insurance.

Travel insurance can save you money if anything happens that affects prepaid, non-refundable reservations before or during your holiday.

Travel medical insurance is crucial if you plan on leaving the U.S., since Medicare and most other health insurance plans do not apply outside the country. You might also need medical coverage if you will be traveling domestically but outside your approved network of healthcare providers. But make sure to carefully study each insurance policy; most do not provide coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

4. Pack light, but bring the essentials.

Limit the amount of clothes you bring and plan to do laundry frequently. You can always wash items in a hotel room sink and hang them to dry. The less you have to lug around, the more mobile you will be.

That said, you should throw in a few items to make your trip easier.

If your eyesight isn't what it used to be, bring a magnifying glass to help you read small print.

If you use a hearing aid, bring an extra set of batteries.

And if you're going abroad, bring a list of your medications' generic names in case you need a refill. Some pharmacists in foreign countries may not recognize American brand names.

5. Think about security.

If possible, arrange to have someone check on your home periodically while you're out of town. And don't tempt burglars by announcing your travel plans on social media. To avoid becoming a target for thieves during your trip, leave the gold watch and fancy jewelry at home, and don't flash too much cash around. You might want to wear a money belt under your clothes to help keep your valuables secure.

Here's another tip: Don't hang the "please make up my room" sign on the door of your hotel room since that signals to potential thieves that you're not there. Instead, inform the front desk that you're going out, and that housekeeping is welcome to clean the room.

6. Minimize the moving and unpacking.

The best senior vacations are often those that don't try to cover too many sites in too little time. Think about basing yourself in a central hub and taking short day trips to surrounding areas. Or take a cruise that lets you explore a variety of destinations without having to change accommodations.

7. Choose centrally located hotels.

Staying near the major attractions (or at least close to public transit options) makes it easier to get back to your room to relax at the end of a long day.

If you have mobility issues, ask for a ground-floor room and find out if the hallways or doorways can fit a walker or wheelchair.

Also, check whether the hotel is on a steep hill or in an unsafe area.

8. Consider staying in hostels.

Did you know that hostels are not just for 20-something backpackers? Independent-minded travelers of all ages can take advantage of cheap, no-frills lodging all over the world. Many hostels offer private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, and there is usually a shared kitchen where you can prepare your meals. Sometimes a simple breakfast is even included in the rate.

9. Swap houses.

Exchanging houses with other travelers for a few days, weeks, or even months is a great way to save money on accommodations and immerse yourself in the local culture at the same time. Sites like HomeExchange and Home Exchange 50plus can help you arrange the details.

10. Go sightseeing early or late in the day.

Getting to an attraction right at opening or just before closing helps you avoid extreme temperatures and large crowds. If you're in an unfamiliar city, starting with a one- or two-hour bus or boat tour can orient you to the area's attractions and help you determine what you'd like to explore in more depth.

11. Consider a guided tour.

Bus tours and cruises can be excellent ways to travel for seniors. Everything is planned, organized, and coordinated by someone else, so you don't need to worry about logistics. But it's still important to find the tour or cruise that suits you best. If you are considering senior travel groups, here are a few questions you should get answers to:

  • For a bus tour, how much time will you spend on the bus each day? For a cruise, how many days will the ship be at sea as opposed to in port?
  • Will headsets be used to make it easier for passengers to hear the guides when touring museums and other sites?
  • Can the bus or ship accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, or scooters?
  • Will there be enough time at each stop to use the restroom and still explore the sites on a bus tour?
  • What is the activity level of the tour?
  • How much free time will you have?
  • How early must you get going in the morning?
  • How centrally located are the hotels or cruise ports?

Travel Tour Companies for Seniors

Organized tours are popular among older adults who want to let someone else take care of a holiday's details. And with some companies offering discounts to members of organizations like the AARP, senior travel tours can offer great value.

Whether you want to explore a destination by bus, train, or even on foot, there are plenty of companies that can help you maximize your vacation enjoyment. Here are a few that are aimed specifically at seniors:

  • Wheel the World : Provides customized tours and travel itineraries for popular destinations in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

Want a relaxing way to see the world and meet new people? Check out cruises. For senior singles and couples who are eager to enjoy a wide range of activities and connect with other mature travelers, cruising can be a great option. Many ships offer activities like trivia games and dance classes that allow you to mingle with people who share your interests. And some ships organize get-togethers and social activities specifically for solo travelers.

Here are a few cruise lines that cater to older adults:

  • Holland America : Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for mobility-challenged seniors. It has accessible rooms and routes on all ships and special lifts that allow wheelchair-bound guests to transfer to tender boats while still seated. It also accommodates single senior travel with a special program that allows solo guests to be matched with a same-sex roommate to avoid paying a single supplement.
  • Oceania : Oceania cruises feature smaller ships and port-intensive itineraries aimed primarily at active adults over age 55. Unlike most lines, Oceania's rates include airfare, all specialty dining, Wi-Fi, and shuttle service from its ships to the city center in each port of call.
  • Royal Caribbean : If you're looking for a mega-ship that is packed with activities for multigenerational groups, Royal Caribbean is the line for you. Its fleet features the largest ships at sea. It also offers accessible staterooms and shore excursions along with discounts on select sailings for guests over 55. While this line is a popular choice among families, its older, smaller ships tend to attract more mature travelers.
  • Fred. Olsen : With an average passenger age of 65 and single occupancy staterooms available on all ships, Fred. Olsen cruises make great solo travel tours for seniors. The British-based line was named the "best ocean cruise line" at the Silver Travel Awards three years in a row.
  • Avalon Waterways : Focused on river rather than ocean cruising, Avalon offers small ships, spacious cabins, and fares that include wine, Wi-Fi, and some shore excursions. However, seniors with mobility challenges should be aware that while some Avalon ships have elevators, they do not have wheelchair ramps. And passengers must climb a set of stairs to take part in the mandatory safety drill.

Why travel in your 80s?

Simple answer? Why not! Many octogenarians speak of the sense of freedom they experience in their eighth or ninth decade. It might be the freedom of more spare time, or freedom from caring about the expectations of other people.

But of course, there are logistical issues to consider. Your mobility might not be what it used to be, and it can be nice to feel supported in the far-flung destinations you choose to visit. This is why a small group tour can be ideal. You get to share your experiences and reactions with like minded people. You can feel confident with the expertise of your group leader and guides. And you will be a valuable part of a small group with our capped participant numbers: at Odyssey Traveller, our tours average eight participants. Below are 16 tips on travel in your 70s, 80s and beyond!

Walking

1. Be honest with your travel provider, and yourself.

At Odyssey Traveller, our number one priority is that you have an enriching and enjoyable experience. In order to make this happen, it’s important we understand you and your individual needs. For travel at any age, an honest relationship with your travel provider is important. Sharing with them your hopes and limitations will help them to tailor your holiday to your needs. For those fascinated by the industrial revolution, Britain’s History through its Canals and Railways could be the perfect fit! Or perhaps you are drawn to the arts: consider the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival small group tour to explore their beguiling operas. Or, for the adventurous, perhaps the pyramids of Egypt is on your bucket list? Talk to us about your own bucket list today!

2. Older travellers must pace themselves!

Your enthusiasm for travel may not have dampened, but, of course, some accommodations must be made! Our tour leaders are approachable and understanding. Wherever possible, you are welcome to opt out of an activity, or perhaps spend a day at leisure close to the hotel. We recommend you familiarise yourself with the full itinerary of your tour. This way you can anticipate the energy stores you will need to get yourself through. Rest up in your evenings and take care of yourself (and each other) each day of the tour. This begins from the moment you leave home for the airport.

3. Work with the airline about your needs, and have an active flight!

best travel destinations for 70 year olds

A significant part of your overseas journey will be the flight itself. Be open with the airline about your needs. Detail your mobility and mention any aides you will need to pack with you. On the flight itself, it’s best to avoid alcohol and sleeping pills. Instead, commit to move as much as you can. Drink plenty of water and undertake regular leg exercises. Qantas has provided a great guide to healthy flying here .

An aisle seat is a great option because it enables you to walk up and down the aisles and stretch your legs. If you are at risk of deep vein thrombosis or DVT , consider wearing compression socks. Your GP can help you to arrange this. More travel tips especially for seniors can be found here .

4. Assessing and maintaining your health

Before setting off on your next adventure, it’s important to check you are in good health. We want your travel experience to run as smoothly as possible. It can be helpful to understand and anticipate potential health issues, and know how to manage them so they have minimal impact on your participation in your tour. Remember, age doesn’t have to be a barrier if you are fit and healthy! Know your abilities, as well as your limitations. And take them seriously.

5. Check with your GP or relevant specialists

We recommend that senior travellers make an appointment with their GP or relevant specialists while planning their trip. Tell them your intentions and ask for their honest opinions on your capacity to get the most out of your tour. Ask them for recommendations on how to safely improve your fitness. It’s also a good idea to pay another visit just prior to your departure. They can check you are in good health and have all the medications and first aid you need to pack with you. Don’t forget to enquire about vaccinations, too.

6. Visit your dentist

Make sure you are up to date with your dental appointments. The last thing you want is a toothache to impact your time away.

7. Think about your diet.

An enjoyable part of small group tours is the anticipation and preparation. Now is the time to try to achieve the best level of readiness you can. Be mindful of how you are treating yourself in the lead up. Eat well. You might also like to familiarise yourself with the cuisine of your chosen destination! This is a fun way to prepare.

8. Improving your fitness

Travel in your 80s

A reasonable level of fitness will mean that you can participate in more, and feel less tired. Under the advice of your health professional, work on how you can improve your fitness. This may be as simple as taking walks instead of driving, or getting out and playing with the dog. Ask your friends about their fitness routines. Your upcoming trip might be the perfect motivation to form a neighbourhood walking group or join a class at the local gym or community centre.

9. Our fitness level indicators for older travellers

All of our tours feature an Activity Level. The description of these is available here . Your job, in concert with your health and fitness providers, is to assess your fitness level so you can be sure the tour is well suited to you. Even though Odyssey Traveller offers flexibility, and you can opt out of activities wherever possible, for your own enjoyment and a feeling of being part of the group, its best to be on the safe side. Better to underestimate your fitness than overestimate it. Just try to become the healthiest version of yourself that you can. Here are all of our level 1 tours – these are classed as introductory and include our summer schools. Level 2 tours can be found here . Our tours range all the way to level 5 so do check the classification of the tour you are interested in.

10. Use of a walker and other mobility aides.

Travel in your 80s

Another thing to bear in mind is the use of walkers and other physical aids. You are, of course, welcome to bring these along, but its essential you let your travel company know in advance. You will also need to inform the airline and speak with them about accessibility. Some of Odyssey Traveller’s tours cover uneven terrain. This is often detailed in the Activity Level. If you are concerned, get in touch with your travel provider for a chat. We are always happy to speak to future travellers.

11. Courtesy to your group members

One of the very best parts of a small group tour is the people you meet and the friendships you form. At Odyssey Traveller, you will be travelling with like minded individuals and couples aged in their 50s and over. Of course, group travel also means that each member impacts on the others. In a way, you are working as a team. It’s important to be honest about your abilities because you don’t want to hold others back. Although you are welcome to sit out particular activities, tour members want to share experiences as a group. This is why it’s important to talk to your travel provider while planning your tour.

12. A companion may be ideal

Seniors Travel

It can be helpful to travel with a companion, especially if you have mobility issues. It can assist you to feel supported, and we’re sure your companion will enjoy themselves too! Having a companion might mean that you can participate that little bit more. So consider whether you have a partner or friend who is interested in small group, educational travel, too. Alternatively, if you are a solo traveller, you might like to read this article for further advice .

13. Travel insurance for seniors is available

Travel insurance for seniors is a must for any overseas holiday. Many insurance companies have experience with travellers aged over 80. Speak to your travel provider or a trusted agent about your options. This is for the sake of your own peace of mind. Odyssey Travellers can assist with independent advice. A key product many mature and senior travellers are purchasing is cancellation insurance for up to a year out from departure. Some travel insurers for seniors offer cancellation insurance as part of their standard package.

14. Consider your destination and do some research

Gizmos Gadgets and Apps for Senior Travellers

Okay, so your next steps? Number one, of course, is to consult your bucket list. Where are the places you have been dreaming of visiting for as long as you can remember? Or the far-flung destinations that hold memories for you? Perhaps you are looking to revisit sentimental cities. Or you might want to learn more about a culture that interests you. Once you have identified the places you wish to visit, start researching! Head to the library, search the internet. Track down people you know who have visited. Check out the reading lists we recommend for each of our tours. And then, with some knowledge, think about how you can make your dream a reality. Perhaps the walking tour of France isn’t possible, but the Senior Travellers guided educational small group rural tour of France might be just perfect for you.

15. Record your memories

This is so important! Come home and share your stories with your friends and family. Inspire others around you to be as adventurous and inquisitive as you are, and to know that octogenarians are valuable contributors to our world.

7 of the best destinations for solo travellers over 50

best travel destinations for 70 year olds

For many of us, the way we travel starts to change around the age of 50.

We enjoy spending longer in a place while discovering its history and culture. We put more emphasis on comfort, more emphasis on a temperate climate, good food, decent infrastructure, and a variety of activities where there is little risk of breaking a bone. Since we’re travelling alone, an affordable and safe destination is a must. And meeting people close to our age is a bonus.

With that in mind, and with over 25 years of experience adventuring solo, here are my top 7 destinations for solo travellers over 50. (It’s worth mentioning that there are so many great destinations out there, but these are my favourite ones!)

The busy Monastiraki Square in Athens, Greece

Bustling Monastiraki Square in Athens

As the birthplace of western civilisation and democracy, Greece ’s history goes back thousands of years and is best discovered through the archaeological sites and museums dotted around the country. The climate is warm and sunny from April to October, which lets you enjoy the beaches on dozens of islands. Crete is my favourite for hiking and spring flowers.

Despite the lure of the islands, be sure to dedicate a few days to Athens . While the city appeared busy and chaotic during my first visit in 1993, I quite enjoyed strolling around and, more recently, using the expanded metro. Healthy and delicious food, friendly locals, as well as an older population (one person in five is over 65) round off the highlights.

2. Portugal

A traveller standing on steps in a street in Lisbon, Portugal

Exploring the pedestrian village of Óbidos

Often-overlooked,  Portugal will delight you. Travelling around this compact country is quick and easy. For example, you can go between Lisbon and Porto by train in less than three hours. Besides cities, Portugal’s draw cards include charming villages (check out Óbidos), castles and cathedrals, nearly 1,800 kilometres of coastline, and the picturesque Douro valley, famous for its wine. Be sure to catch a fado performance (traditional folk music) at À Capella in Coimbra, my favourite Portuguese town.

Feeling inspired?

Large food portions at restaurants help make the country surprisingly affordable. Always ask for a ‘meia dose’ (half serving) unless you’re starving. A panoramic view of Italy gorgeous Amalfi Coast

Italy’s Amalfi Coast

Just like Greece, Italy is rich in history and culture, and features one of the best cuisines in the world. By all means, visit the astounding art treasures in Rome and Florence and the canals in Venice , but also visit less well-trodden regions such as Puglia, Basilicata, Umbria, or Le Marche, to see a more authentic glimpse of the country. Italian trains are very affordable, although not always punctual.

If you like day hikes, stay in Cinque Terre for a few days and walk the easy coastal path between its five colourful villages. 4. Argentina

A traveller on the Salinas Grandes, a large salt plain in Jujuy province, Argentina

Marie on the Salinas Grandes, a large salt plain in Jujuy province, Argentina

Argentina is huge. I spent 12 weeks there and still haven’t seen everything. You can hike around lakes and up mountains, ride a boat to a glacier, see penguins, taste wines, admire some of the biggest waterfalls in the world, visit museums and churches, and shop until you drop. If you’re fascinated by the tango, spend time in sophisticated Buenos Aires. Catch a free performance on the street, buy a ticket to a show, or even take a lesson. Some schools like DNI Tango match you with different solo partners if you come on your own.

Avoid expensive flights by taking night buses, which are affordable, safe, and comfortable. Or choose to spend your time in one region. Go to Patagonia , the Lake District, and Iguazú Falls for stunning landscapes. Or escape the crowds in the pretty cities of Córdoba and Salta. December to March is summer in Argentina, making it a great winter destination for North Americans.

Performers doing the Los Viejitos, a traditional Mexican dance

The traditional Mexican folk dance of Los Viejitos

If you’re solo, head to Mexico ‘s Pacific Coast and the towns of the highlands such as Oaxaca or Guanajuato . These places offer a little more authenticity than the Caribbean coast, which often caters to package tourists and couples (with prices to match). Mexico City is also reinventing itself as quite the cultured capital, with an exploding food scene that I’m a big fan of. Due to its altitude, the city tends to be cool and pleasant to stroll around.

Colourful, sunny, and very affordable, Mexico is home to various indigenous groups with their own foods, customs, handicrafts, and archaeological sites (Aztec, Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, and more). Mexico is also home to some of the friendliest people I’ve come across. Add to this a large number of North American expats, especially in winter, and it isn’t hard to meet people.

A quiet street in Luang Prabang, Laos

A sleepy street in the centre of Luang Prabang

Get away from the hordes of tourists and full-moon parties and visit underrated Laos . The gracious and reserved Lao people, orange-robed monks, and ornate Buddhist temples are reminiscent of Thailand, but without the crowds.

The peaceful town of Luang Prabang in the north makes a visit here especially relaxing. Take a boat trip on the Mekong, visit small villages further afield, or go for a hike in the beautiful countryside. The climate is also cooler and more comfortable than in much of South East Asia.

Laos offers a distinct cuisine based on sticky rice (which you eat with your fingers). Try orlam (a thick soup with buffalo meat) or chicken skewers wrapped in lemongrass. You can eat for a couple of dollars at the street markets, but check out the Tamarind Café in Luang Prabang for something a little more upscale, and consider taking their cooking class.

A pretty temple in Kyoto, Japan

Where else do taxi drivers wear white gloves and meals can be ordered from a display of plastic food dishes? Japan feels different and exciting, but it’s so clean, safe, and well-organised that you’ll easily find your way around – even if you don’t know a single word of Japanese.

Most hotels charge per person, not per room, meaning that you’re not penalised for travelling solo. Add to this the famous Japanese politeness and the delicious food, and you have a winner. Tokyo and Kyoto are the two cities you absolutely can’t miss. But the speedy and ultra-punctual bullet trains make travelling around the country a breeze.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
