Dionne Warwick on Her Rock Hall Induction: ‘I’ve Never Considered Myself a Rock & Roller’

Since the lockdown four years ago, Dionne Warwick has been known almost as much for her pithy tweets as for her velvety singing voice and the gorgeous Burt Bacharach-Hal David hits she transformed into pop standards. “I don’t get up in the morning and say, ‘I’ve got to tweet today,’” she tells Rolling Stone . “I do it when I feel there’s something I want to say.”

That moment arrived again this past Monday, when Warwick tweeted: “In every game it’s usually 3 strikes and you’re out. I guess I hit a home run this time! Happy to be part of the roster of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.” Sure enough, Warwick, who’d been nominated for admission into the Rock Hall in 2021 and 2022, finally made it in this year when she was selected for the Musical Excellence Award. We caught up with the venerable and wise legend, 83, to dig deeper into the thoughts behind that post.

Did you know you were being considered this year for the Musical Excellence category? No, I didn’t.

It was a surprise? Complete. So it was kind of surprising. I’ve never considered myself a rock & roller. I guess everybody else did, except me. Which is OK, you know. I’ll be a rock & roller if that’s what you want me to be.

What do you think changed this time? I haven’t a clue. But I’m happy that I’m being considered again. My mantra has always been it happens when it’s supposed to.

Have you discussed which song or songs you’ll sing and maybe with whom at the ceremony? We haven’t discussed any of that yet. I was completely blindsided by it all.

You’re also in a special category, the Musical Excellence Award. Which is wonderful. I always considered my music to be excellent.

Did anyone explain to you the difference between the Performer category (which includes Cher, Mary J. Blige, Dave Matthews, and others) and the one for Musical Excellence? No, I haven’t a clue as to what the difference is. It’s all kind of new to me. i watched a couple of these shows where the people were put into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame thing, but never saw myself as one of those to be considered.

What’s the most rock & roll thing about you? I guess the fact that I have had the opportunity to listen to it. And I know quite a few of those who are truly considered to the rock & rollers. I’ve toured with them. But aside from that… That’s my whole association with rock & roll.   

What were your most memorable shows or tours with rock acts?   My first trips to England in the early Sixties were tours with the Searchers, the Seekers, and the Beatles . All of them were considered to be rock & roll groups.

So what happened when you went out? I walked out, and they started up the introduction of my first recording, “Don’t Make Me Over.” And I really did not hear a thing. They were screaming so loud.  

How did you adjust? I didn’t adjust. I just kept on singing!

What’s your best Beatles hangout story from that time? I remember vividly them coming to one of my shows at the Savoy Hotel in London. I made reservations for them, and they showed up looking like the Beatles. The Savoy Hotel, as you know, is one of those very, very posh hotels, very proper, and here they are showing up in their Beatle way. They were refused seating.

Well, needless to say, they were seated.  After the show was over, we all went to a little club,  basically for people who were in the business. It wasn’t an open kind of place. We were relaxing, dancing, and just hanging out.

Did you ever trash a hotel room during those tours with those bands? No [laughs] . As I said, I wasn’t a rocker & roller. They were.

From Cher to Ozzy Osbourne, see the 2024 list of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

A mix of first-timers and longtime hopefuls made the cut as 2024 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The eight entrants in the performer category span rock, pop and hip-hop, and were announced during the live broadcast of the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night” episode of “American Idol" on April 21.

The newest Rock Hall inductees are:

• Kool & The Gang.
• Ozzy Osbourne .
• A Tribe Called Quest.

In addition, the musical influence award will go to a trio of blues heroes – Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton.

Jimmy Buffett will be honored posthumously with the musical excellence award, along with MC5, Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield.

The annual Ahmet Ertegun award will go to screenwriter/TV producer Suzanne de Passe, who served as executive producer of “Showtime At the Apollo” from 2002-2008.

The ceremony to honor the new class will take place Oct. 19 at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland and stream live on Disney+ (Hulu the next day) with an airing on ABC at a later date. Ticket information for the show is forthcoming.

Five of the inductees landed on the ballot for the first time this year – Cher, Foreigner, Frampton, Kool & The Gang and Osbourne, who is already inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, which received its coronation in 2006.

Blige was previously nominated in 2021, A Tribe Called Quest  learned that the third time is the charm – following nods in 2022 and 2023 – and Dave Matthews Band, previously the only fan vote winners (in 2020) to not land on the final list won this year’s fan vote again and this time, was chosen for entry. The fan vote counts as one vote with the general voting body.

In December, Cher told Kelly Clarkson on her talk show that she feels the Rock Hall snubbed her for many years.

"You know what, I wouldn't be in it now if they gave me a million dollars," she told Clarkson . "I'm never going to change my mind."

Other 2024 nominees who weren't chosen for this year's induction include Lenny Kravitz , Mariah Carey, Sade and Oasis.

To be eligible, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

Melissa Ruggieri is among the more than 1,000 voting members – composed of artists, historians and members of the music industry – of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The iconic singer, songwriter and actress Mary J. Blige has been listed for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ’s class of 2024. She announced the news on the evening of April 21 with a post that chronicled some of her past performances, and a caption expressing sincere gratitude for the honor.

“Beyond Grateful!!!!!!” the Grammy Award-winning singer wrote on Instagram . “This is incredible!!! God always has the final say!!!! Thank you to my fans all over the world!!!! Tears of Joy!!!!”

In addition to Blige, the hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest are almost among the honorees for the upcoming induction ceremony. The Queens-based rap collective Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White, and the late Phife Dawg. Following the announcement, White posted a photo of ATCQ on social media and a quote that read: “Wow!!! @qtiptheabstract @alishaheed we did it!!!! Phifey we got you in the hall of fame!!!! Wish you were here. Well I know you’re watching so….. Fuck yeah!!! lol To all of the questers, from the bottom of our hearts thank you!!!! #jedibusiness.”

The full list of inductees were announced during Sunday night’s episode of American Idol. Kool & The Gang are set to be inducted as well, with Big Mama Thornton receiving the Musical Influence Award, and Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield will be honored with the Musical Excellence Award.

“Rock & Roll is an ever-evolving amalgam of sounds that impacts culture and moves generations,” John Sykes, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement about the inductees. “This diverse group of inductees each broke down musical barriers and influenced countless artists that followed in their footsteps.”

The induction ceremony will be streamed live on Disney+ on October 19. It will later air on ABC and be available on Hulu on the following day.
