What Advisors Should Know About citizenM, a Hotel Industry Disruptor

What Advisors Should Know About citizenM, a Hotel Industry Disruptor

citizenM Seattle South Lake Union

citizenM is a younger hotel brand, having entered the industry in 2008, less than two decades ago. The focus is on providing business travelers a unique experience built around the “new luxury.” Since its start, the Netherlands-based hotel chain has taken off, adding properties not only across Europe but in the Americas and Asia, too, with many more in the pipeline.

This week, Lennert De Jong, the company’s chief commercial officer, spoke to Travel Market Report from Amsterdam about the brand’s expansion, its unique position in the market, and what travel advisors should know about it.

Where does citizenM have properties? The brand opened its first property at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in 2008 and started expanding shortly after, adding another Amsterdam property in 2009, one in Glasgow in 2010, and another in London in 2012.

Since its start, it has continued to expand and now features 21 properties in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The pandemic didn’t slow down the brand’s expansion, either, with new properties opening during the pandemic in Seattle, Geneva, and more.

There are more in the pipeline, too, with new properties in the work in Europe (three in Paris, one in London , and one in Rome) and in North America (one in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington, along with three in Miami and two in San Francisco.).

The properties are based in cities that citizenM considers major business travel centers or “big gateway cities,” De Jong said.

What kind of experience does citizenM offer? citizenM is luxury, but not the traditional definition of luxury. It is the hotel-version of the new luxury movement that companies like Netflix and Uber have blossomed into, the type of experience that is luxury because of its ease of use.

“Netflix is luxury because it’s always in your pocket. That’s the type of luxury we are doing at citizenM—modern luxury,” he said. Think luxury through modern technology, targeted at frequent business travelers.

“We are trying to convince that business travel population that you don’t have to have a miserable experience. Often we go to sites, we look at our competition. The only reason you stay at some of these properties is that you get points so at the end of the year you can take your family to a resort,” De Jong said. “There’s no consistency, the only consistency is you get paid a little bit every time you stay with points.” (citizenM currently doesn’t have a loyalty program but one is in the works, De Jong said).

Inside the hotels, citizenM’s room trend smaller when compared to the industry at large—De Jong said that is because most of the properties are in bigger cities—but are “efficient in design, clean, and contemporary,” he said.

The goal with every property is to offer a hybrid experience, a place to stay for business meetings, with free WiFi to work on site, comfortable furniture, 24/7 food and drinks available, and more, while also being able to live as a “mobile citizen” (citizenM for short).

The goal is to enhance the lives of business travelers, whether they are there for a day stay, an overnight, or a three or four week extended stay.

What makes citizenM different? There are two major differentiations that separates citizenM from the rest of the market, De Jong said.

The first is that it provides a 100% completely digital experience. Everything can be done on citizenM’s app, a centralized mobile tool that does just about everything a guest would traditionally typically need an attendant on the phone or at the front desk for. Guests can book, check-in, open and close blinds, adjust room temperature, open their door, order food and beverage, and alter housekeeping options all from the app.

The second is that, with all those typical touch-points taken care of by the mobile app, the staff at citizenM serves as different purpose, mainly providing and facilitating a connection to the hotel, to other guests, and to the city that the hotel serves.

“We really have a human approach to service because we don’t have to do the transactional bit in service,” he said. “If that process is gone, the human can really focus on other humans,” and have the conversations with guests that those at a typical five-star hotel wouldn’t have time for.

That makes it easy for citizenM to facilitate connections with other travelers, whether through those staff interactions or through its app.

citizenM takes a different approach to staffing, too—De Jong told TMR that it doesn’t hire from the traditional candidates in the hospitality market. Instead, it looks to “hire nice human beings.”

“We don’t hire from other hotels, we hire a lot of actors, actresses, or musicians. They don’t have to have experience working as hotel staff. They just have to be humans,” he said.

It’s about connecting with its specific guests on a personal level. Instead of being something for everyone, De Jong said, the goal is to be everything to someone.

“We are willing to commit to our frequent travels if they are willing to commit to us,” he said.  “Our goal is to be everything for someone – being really specific for someone allows us to foster that connection.”

What should travel advisors know? Aside from the basic offerings to travel advisors—automated commission payments and invoices, the “kinds of frictions that we’re always trying to take away,” De Jong said—citizenM has also recently launched its own GDS code chain, GDS: CU.

The launch, which happened earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic period, reflects citizenM’s desire to continue to connect, and increase the connection, to travel advisors. It also reflects some of the experience that the executives at citizenM have, including De Jong, who spent six years as director of sales with SynXis by Sabre managing European sales and adding hotels to Sabre’s hotel offerings.

“They will see us more in travel agents shows, doing FAM trips for those who are booking us. I know sometimes hotels have a low relationship with travel agents, but for us they are very important. We are really on a joint mission with travel agents. We would never do anything to do anything to alienate them.”

What special programs does citizenM offer? Aside from traditional hotel stays and business centers, citizenM also offers two special programs.

The first is a global passport, where guests can stay for 29 consecutive nights at a fixed rate at any citizenM property. That program provides an opportunity to work from anywhere, with free WiFi and 25% discount on all food and drink included.

The second is the traditional day pass option that has always been offered, but only recently has been highlighted because of the new work-from-home COVID economy.

Location Brand hotels are located in some of the most famous cities in the world, including London, New York, Amsterdam, and Paris. That makes them an excellent option for travelers who want to be close to all the action.

Facilities CitizenM hotels offer a range of amenities, including free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour fitness center, and a bar. However, they do not provide some common amenities in traditional hotels, such as room service or a concierge.

Atmosphere The Hotels have a modern and stylish atmosphere. They are designed to attract younger, more tech-savvy people.

Overall, CitizenM hotels are a good choice for travelers looking for an affordable, stylish, and comfortable place to stay. Judging from the points above, we agree that CitizenM is worth spending on!

citizenM Launches Loyalty Program: mycitizenM+

Planning travel and booking online

citizenM launched a loyalty program called mycitizenM+. mycitizenM+ doesn’t have points to collect, levels to achieve, or welcome gifts. Members sign up for a monthly fee to get the perks without the points, and they don’t have to spend more to get rewards.

When choosing the membership features, citizenM relied on guest feedback. Most travelers want simplicity, value, and flexibility. With the mycitizenM+ membership, citizenM gives an extra discount lowest public rate. A room is also guaranteed, even during busy periods, for all member reservations made at least 48 hours in advance.

Additional inclusions are free late check-out and a free upgrade to a view room, both are subject to availability; a “first in queue” chat service; early access to discounts; and members-only events. WiFi is available at all hotels.

The cost of the membership can be recouped within two nights. Billing is monthly (not yearly) at a fixed rate, and sign-up is for one year. Every citizenM hotel is included, and there are no blackout dates. By the end of 2022, there will be 30 citizenM hotels in 18 cities across Europe, North America, and Asia.

In 2020, citizenM piloted subscription products like global passport, sleep, and corporate subscription. The trials showed an appetite in the market and insights that now serve as guides for mycitizenM+. Future add-ons are in development to customize the membership for all travelers.

Ernest Lee, citizenM’s chief growth officer, says, “We’ve always appealed to the self-employed: entrepreneurs, freelancers, and consultants. Many of them are starting or scaling a business, paying for travel out of their own pocket. As a young company that went through a ‘bootstrapping’ phase ourselves, we understand the importance of being frugal while still wanting a high-quality travel experience. That’s why we launched mycitizenM+. Now, startup founders to independent contractors have a shortcut to elite hotel status without the complicated points program or ‘Fortune 500’ travel budget.”

Get 3 months of free perks with CitizenM and its loyalty program that’s breaking all the rules

Ryan Smith

It's not often that hotel companies come along and offer something that truly breaks the mold. It's even more rare when the same company does it twice.

CitizenM is a hotel chain focused on offering affordable places to work, stay and relax in popular cities around the world without paying for extras that people aren't likely to use.

Earlier this year, the chain launched its first loyalty program with an approach that breaks the industry norm. You don't have a required number of stays or annual spending thresholds to meet. Instead, the perks and benefits come when you pay a flat, monthly fee. And for a limited time, you can get three free months of mycitizenM+ status and perks by signing up using this link .

But is the mycitizenM+ program for you? Let's take a look.

What is citizenM, and where are its hotels?

citizen m travel agent rate

CitizenM launched its first hotel in 2008 in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS ). The brand now has 24 hotels in 16 cities: Amsterdam ; Boston ; Copenhagen ; Geneva ; Glasgow , Scotland; Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia; London ; Los Angeles ; New York City ; Paris ; Rotterdam , Netherlands; San Francisco ; Seattle ; Taipei , Taiwan; Washington, D.C. , and Zurich .

There are six new citizenM hotels opening in 2022 and five more in 2023, including locations in Austin; Chicago; Dublin; Miami; Menlo Park, California; and Rome.

What makes citizenM hotels unique is that the brand aims to place its hotels in central locations in popular cities, avoiding unnecessary perks and offering an affordable nightly rate. For example, its two New York locations are in Times Square and the Bowery with rates starting at $149 per night.

Related: Review: CitizenM Bowery in New York

CitizenM sees itself as "[n]ot just a place to sleep, but somewhere to work, relax and play – just like home. Somewhere with superfast free Wi-Fi, tech that makes life easy, and a great bed to crash in at the end of a long day." Founder Rattan Chadha called this concept "affordable luxury for the people."

While this is an interesting concept, the hotel chain originally lacked something we've come to expect from hotels these days: a loyalty program. Thankfully, this was addressed earlier this year.

Overview of mycitizenM+

citizen m travel agent rate

The rewards program from citizenM is called mycitizenM+, and it's definitely not like the hotel loyalty programs you're used to. First things first: There are no points.

Instead of keeping track of points or how many nights you've stayed to earn your way to status, you pay a $12 monthly fee. There are no other requirements for attaining perks.

You don't need to stay a certain number of nights each year or meet the required spending thresholds. In this respect, paying $144 over the course of a year is likely cheaper than what it costs to attain a similar level of status with programs like Marriott Bonvoy or World of Hyatt .

Plus, from Oct. 4 to Nov. 1, 2022, new members can enroll for three free months of mycitizenM+ using the promo code POINTSGUY3 . To take advantage of this offer, enroll using this link or when making a hotel booking. You can cancel at any time during the promotional period; afterward, you will be enrolled for a one-year plan, billed at $12 per month.

Everyone can download the citizenM app to enjoy perks like checking in through the app and generating a mobile key. This saves you time at check-in, since you won't have to wait in line.

The main perks of mycitizenM+ include free late checkout, upgrades to a premium-view room and a 10% discount on the lowest rate available. Of course, late checkout and upgrades are both subject to availability.

Elite members are also first in line for chat assistance and get early access to discounts and invitations to members-only events. Members also have guaranteed room availability on reservations made at least 48 hours in advance.

Related: Which hotel programs offer guaranteed availability benefits?

Since the main perks involve a 10% discount and room upgrades, it's worth investigating what value these provide. Do they offset the cost of paying for mycitizenM+ each year?

Consider this sample booking at citizenM Times Square. You could save $71.73 as a mycitizenM+ member on a two-night weekend stay — nearly half of the cost of an annual membership.

citizen m travel agent rate

In terms of late checkout and premium views, these add-ons don't come free for non-elite members. Late checkout on a three-night stay during the week in Los Angeles will cost $69 per room. And a premium room upgrade costs $20.19 per night, for a total cost of $60.57 on a three-night stay.

citizen m travel agent rate

Between these two stays, you could possibly recoup the value of your membership ($144 per year, paid as $12 per month) through discounts and perks. Since the upgrades on perks aren't technically "money saved," you could recoup the cost of your annual fee after staying approximately five nights in a year.

While you are charged monthly, enrollment is on a yearly basis. Thus, you commit for 12 months when you sign up for mycitizenM+. However, there is a 14-day cancellation policy after starting your membership in the first year — and remember, you can join here to enjoy your first three months for free.

Membership will automatically renew for subsequent years, unless you opt out or cancel at least 30 days in advance. This same 30-day policy applies to canceling your plan after the first full year, meaning you can cancel in year two and beyond at any point during the membership year. Simply cancel your plan, and payments will end after 30 days.

The full terms and conditions are here .

Evaluating the positives and negatives

The mycitizenM+ program is definitely not like other hotel loyalty programs. Depending on your perspective and your travel style, that could be a good or a bad thing.

In terms of positives, the path to status is simple and cheap. Even if you stay only at the cheapest properties in another hotel program, you won't get to a mid-tier status to qualify for room upgrades when spending less than $144 in a year. With mycitizenM+, you also don't need to worry about counting your elite nights or how much you've spent with the hotel. The simplicity and cost are definitely perks. There's no effort required, which may be refreshing for people who find the route to hotel status exhausting.

Of course, there are negatives to this approach too.

MycitizenM+ lacks some of the perks we usually associate with hotel elite status, such as free breakfast and suite upgrades. Given that there's no points program, you also can't accrue points on your hotel stays and redeem them for an aspirational property later down the line. This is a big deal for road warriors who spend a lot of time on the road for work and use the points earned for family vacations.

There is also no cobranded credit card providing free nights or bonus points on spending. Since all of your stays will be paid stays, we recommend paying for your stays with a travel rewards credit card .

Comparing mycitizenM+ to other 'pay to play' options

citizen m travel agent rate

CitizenM isn't the first hotel program to sell elite status perks outright. For example, InterContinental Ambassador lets you buy status in the IHG One Rewards program without meeting any tracking any spending or hotel stay requirements along the way, and you can take advantage of extra perks when you stay at InterContinental hotels and resorts around the world.

At InterContinental properties, Ambassador perks include guaranteed room upgrades (not guaranteed on award redemptions), guaranteed late checkout, a complimentary weekend night valid on the second night of a paid stay, a $20 property credit for food and drinks during your stay, daily bottled water, a second guest in your room for no extra charge and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star status .

When staying at other IHG properties, you'll enjoy Platinum Elite status . This includes 60% bonus points earned on paid stays, reward night discounts, 72-hour guaranteed room availability, room upgrades (based on availability), welcome amenities and early check-in and late checkout (subject to availability).

InterContinental Ambassador status costs $200 or 40,000 IHG points per year. This is more expensive than mycitizenM+, and you won't save a guaranteed amount on your hotel stays. At the same time, it's a more generous suite of perks and there are far more IHG properties out there than citizenM hotels.

Status via credit card

Another popular option for "buying" elite status is opening a cobranded credit card with a particular hotel group.

The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card comes with a $150 annual fee, (see rates and fees ) and offers automatic Gold status in the Hilton Honors program. With Gold status, you can enjoy perks like 80% bonus points earned on paid stays, free bottled water during your stay, a fifth night free on award stays , upgrades to preferred rooms, food and beverage credits and welcome gifts on each stay.

Likewise, the IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card offers automatic Platinum Elite status with IHG, and the card has a $99 annual fee. These are the same IHG Platinum Elite perks discussed previously, but you won't enjoy the InterContinental-specific perks.

You can easily attain status in these programs by having a credit card with a fee under $100, and the perks rival what mycitizenM+ offers. You would also earn points that could help you get free stays in the future, as long as you have paid stays or use the credit card to earn points.

Bottom line

MycitizenM+ is a unique take on hotel status. Gone are the suite upgrades, white-glove treatment and other concepts of luxury. The idea of points and free nights is completely absent. Instead, the focus is on simplicity, based on key perks like guaranteed discounts, upgrades and late checkout.

For people who have a lot of paid hotel stays or like staying at smaller properties with fewer frills, this could be exciting. It should also appeal to people who don't like tracking their stays throughout the year; instead, they might want something simpler. On the flip side, citizenM has a smaller footprint, so this may not appeal to you if you find yourself heading to lesser-traveled destinations. It also won't appeal to people who want the royal treatment as part of their hotel status.

But for travelers who frequent citizenM properties, it's worth doing the math to see if you can come out ahead with a mycitizenM+ membership.

Imagine Your Dream Vacation

Hotel excellence faqs.

Update Feb. 2024: All Preferred Travel Agencies (PTAs) must take action by March 31, 2024 to maintain Preferred Travel Agency status. View your Hotel Excellence! dashboard to check your status. Agencies whose Hotel Excellence! dashboard indicates that they are Standard continue to have the ability to complete the requirements to become a Preferred Travel Agency location and enjoy the associated benefits. Marriott Bonvoy® membership is now a requirement to access the Hotel Excellence! training and receive all associated Hotel Excellence! benefits. Enter your Marriott Bonvoy Member Number in the Marriott Bonvoy Membership section at the top of your MI Partner Privileges profile.

Preferred Travel Agency Program (PTA) & Recertification

What is the preferred travel agency program.

Marriott’s Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) program allows ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA accredited travel agencies to earn a preferred commission (currently 10%) for all transient commissionable bookings made across Marriott’s portfolio of brands worldwide. The PTA program has two criteria: (1) An agency owner or manager must electronically agree to the PTA commitment, and (2) the agency must have at least one qualified travel advisor, who has entered their Marriott Bonvoy® Member Number into their MI Partner Privileges profile and confirmed the accuracy of the other profile information, for each agency location. Marriott Bonvoy membership is a requirement to access the Hotel Excellence! training and receiving all Hotel Excellence! benefits.

Agencies not fulfilling all the criteria will be a Standard Travel Agency with Marriott and receive  8% commission on all transient commissionable bookings.

Design Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy®, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and MGM Collection do not participate in the program.

What do I need to do to maintain my PTA status?

Annually, an agency owner/manager must: 1) agree to the terms of being a Preferred Travel Agency and update their personal profile; and 2) have at least one qualified graduate of Marriott’s Hotel Excellence! training program that includes the “Core” training and the annual Continuing Education training for the certification cycle. Agencies that have not met both criteria by the end of the certification cycle will revert to Standard Travel Agency status. Travel agency owners/managers can view their Preferred Travel Agency status on their Dashboard at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com . Fulfillment of these requirements must be met for each agency ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA number. Please note, by registering or updating your profile, you agree that we may provide your agency owner with your Hotel Excellence! graduation status as it relates to your agency maintaining their Preferred Travel Agency status and benefits.

What is the duration of my PTA status?

PTA status is valid for the current certification cycle, typically one year. Agencies must act by the current recertification deadline to maintain their status for the next cycle. Recertification requirements are communicated to the email provided by the agency owner/manager in sufficient time for the criteria to be met by the recertification deadline. However, each agency owner/manager should log in to their Hotel Excellence! account to review their PTA status and ensure all requirements have been met.

What is my agency committing to when we agree to the PTA Terms?

The Preferred Travel Agency Terms can be found by clicking on the “PTA Commitment” badge on the agency owner/manager’s dashboard at hotelexcellence.marriott.com . This badge will only appear if you answer “yes” to the question on your profile, “Are you the Owner, Manager, or Senior Executive of this Company / Agency?”

What happens if my agency does not fulfill the criteria by the recertification deadline?

If an agency does not fulfill the PTA criteria by the end of the recertification deadline, they will default to Standard Travel Agency status and receive an 8% commission on all transient commissionable reservations until such time as the requirements have been fulfilled.

Will my agency be allowed to fulfill the requirements after the recertification deadline?

If the recertification deadline is missed, agencies can recertify at any time. However, any lapse in PTA criteria will change an agency’s status to Standard Travel Agency with an 8% commission. Once the PTA criteria has been met, Marriott will elevate the agency to Preferred Travel Agency status and 10% commission will apply for stays departing from that point forward on all transient commissionable reservations, provided these requirements are maintained.

Will I receive reminders about the annual recertification requirements?

Marriott will send three email reminders  to the email address on file as the PTA Commitment signer for the Preferred Travel Agency owner/manager before the recertification deadline. It is the responsibility of the owner/manager to have a valid email address in their profile and to log in to their Hotel Excellence! account before the recertification deadline to ensure all requirements have been met.

How can I ensure that Marriott has my agency's email address so that we receive notifications?

Agency owners/managers should create a MI Partner Privileges profile with their email address, and attest that they are the owner/manager or other senior executive affiliated with the agency location so they can agree to the Preferred Travel Agency terms.  A verification email will be sent requesting confirmation of receipt.  Once verified, the email address will be used to communicate important information about that agency location's PTA status; therefore, it is recommended the email be updated as needed.

I have multiple ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations within my organization. May I commit to the PTA terms collectively for them?

Each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA number must register at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com and agree to the PTA terms individually.

How can I see which ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations in my organization have HE! graduates, and how can I track when my consultants recertify?

Each agency owner/manager should create an account at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com to access their Agency Dashboard. The Dashboard will clearly indicate the following for each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA location: a) If a qualified graduate of the training is needed; b) whether the PTA terms have been agreed to; c) whether the agency is “Preferred” or “Standard”.

Will my preferred commission levels apply to the group business I place with Marriott?

No. The Preferred Travel Agency program applies only to commissionable transient bookings. Group commissions will be paid in accordance with the signed Group Sales Agreement.

Where can I obtain information about Marriott’s commission policies and procedures?

View Marriott’s Commission Policy and Commission FAQs to link to frequently asked questions regarding commissions .

Hotel Excellence! (HE!) Training & Required Recertification

What is the hotel excellence program.

Hotel Excellence! is an online training program, specifically designed for professional travel professionals, to help them navigate the ever-changing hotel industry and to help their clients choose hotels that best suit their needs and style. The training is accessible on a multi-device platform to allow maximum flexibility and convenience. In addition to the “Core” training, annual Continuing Education recertification training will be developed and required for eligibility for Fam-Tastic benefits. There are also supplemental modules available that are optional and allow travel professionals the opportunity to customize their learning to best fit their needs.

How will HE! training benefit me as a travel professional?

In addition to the robust knowledge provided within HE!, qualified graduates gain exclusive access to Marriott’s industry-leading Fam-Tastic familiarization rate program, offering discounted rates at the majority of Marriott properties. (See the Fam-Tastic topic for more details on this exclusive program.) Graduates also receive Continuing Educations Units: 10 CEUs towards the maintenance of the Travel Institute’s CTA/CTC certification, or 8 CEUs for Association of Canadian Travel Agencies certification or 10 CLIA credits for CLIA agents.

How will completion of the HE! training program benefit my agency?

The training will familiarize agents with Marriott’s robust portfolio of brands and what makes each brand unique. It will also help travel consultants work more efficiently, close more sales, and benefit your agency’s bottom line. This is important as the travel and tourism landscape changes, customers book travel in new ways, and new waves of travelers are emerging. More than ever before, travel agencies must demonstrate their value and expertise, and the HE! training is a smart investment for your agency. The HE! training is available at no cost, and agencies who employ travel professionals that are qualified advisors who have successfully completed the training are eligible to become a Marriott Preferred Travel Agency.

How do I access the training?

Hotel Excellence! training is accessible at  hotelexcellence.marriott.com  after completing your MI Partner Privileges account with your Marriott Bonvoy® Member Number. All Core, Continuing Education and optional training modules can be found via the Hotel Excellence! dashboard. Log in to hotelexcellence.marriott.com and from the top of your dashboard at the top right, click the “?” icon to view a site tour on how to access the training as well as a quick tour of other features available on your HE! dashboard.

Do I need to complete all of the modules in the Core Training/curriculum?

No. The training has been designed to allow travel professionals the flexibility to choose their own learning journey. To satisfy the requirements for the Core training, complete one module from the Introduction section, two modules from the Brands Training section and three modules from the Foundational Training section. There are also optional modules in the Supplemental Modules section to help travel professionals strengthen their industry knowledge.

Can I complete the training on my mobile device or tablet?

Yes. The training is accessible from most web-enabled devices and browsers. Advisors can learn at their own pace by stopping and restarting the training seamlessly.

Is there an app I need to download?

No. HE! training is accessible on the following browsers and devices. The website and training will adapt to any web-enabled device the agent is using.

Browsers: Chrome & Edge (83+), Safari (14+), Firefox(77+), Opera (68+), Samsung Internet (11+), Android (81+)

Devices: Android 8.0+ (Oreo), iPads® (Except The iPad® Mini) And iPhones® (version iOS 13+)

How much time should I allow to complete the training?

On average, users take just under two hours to complete the Core HE! training and 30 minutes to complete the annual Continuing Education training.

Why has the sign in process to Marriott's Hotel Excellence! website and Fam-Tastic booking changed?

Privacy and security are a top priority for Marriott, and we know how important it is to protect your data. We've changed the sign-in process to be more secure, ensuring the highest standards of security, while streamlining your experience across all of our Intermediary Partner Program websites.

How does Marriott use my information after I have registered for the training?

Marriott will use your email address to send you important updates about your Hotel Excellence! recertification status. Your email address will also be used to send you Reserved for You, the exclusive e-Newsletter for graduates of Hotel Excellence!, should you opt in. From time to time, and only upon request by your agency, Marriott may identify you to your agency as a graduate of Hotel Excellence! to confirm your agency is meeting the requirements as a Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) and receiving the PTA status and benefits.  View our Terms of Use and Privacy Center for additional information.

I started the Core/Continuing Education training module(s) but the icon on my dashboard displays as “Not Started”. Why?

The statuses that display under the Core Training and Continuing Education icons update based on your completion of the training assessments at the end of each training module. The "Not Started" status on your dashboard is an indicator that the assessment was not attempted/completed. Upon successful completion of the assessment, the status under the Core/Continuing Education icon on the dashboard will update to “Completed” and a certificate displays in the HE! Curriculum pane next to the title of the completed module(s). If you do not successfully complete the assessment, the progress gauge on the HE! Curriculum pane will display at 85% complete, and the status under the Core Training/ Continuing Education icon on the dashboard will display as “Partially Completed”.

The name on your profile must match the name on your IATA/IATAN/CLIA card and/or photo identification and reservation at check-in. I emailed MI Partner Privileges to update my profile name, but when I booked a new Fam-Tastic reservation, the update did not reflect on my reservation. What should I do?

I changed the name on my MI Partner Privileges profile, but my new name has not updated on the Fam-Tastic reservation(s) that I made before my name change. What should I do?

The name, as it appears on your MI Partner Privileges profile, must match the name on your IATA/IATAN/CLIA card and/or photo identification and reservation at check-in. Please email [email protected] , or contact Intermediary Partner Care at 1-800-831-3100, Option 5, or worldwide at 1-402-390-1651 for assistance. They will connect you with the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line to change the name on your existing reservation(s).

How do I add/change special request(s) to my existing Fam-Tastic reservation?

Please contact one of the Customer Engagement Centers via http://www.marriott.com/help/global-phone-reservation-numbers.mi , and ask to be transferred to the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line and a specialist will help you add/change your special request(s).

I am having trouble booking additional room nights/cancelling my Fam-Tastic reservation. What do I do?

All cancellations or modifications to your Fam-Tastic reservation must be made after signing into Marriott’s dedicated Travel Agent website at www.marriott.com/travelagents .

  • Select “Access Fam-Tastic” from the “Hotel Excellence” menu option at the top of the page.
  • Click on “Travel Advisor Sign in or Register” and sign in with your email address and password.
  • Click on "Find & Reserve" located at the top of the page to the right of the Marriott Bonvoy logo.
  • Beneath the hotel search section, click on “Lookup Reservation”.
  • Enter your information in the “For a specific reservation” section.  Do not use the “For a list of your reservations” section, as this will take you out of the Hotel Excellence/Fam-Tastic signed in access.
  • Once you have located your reservation, you may proceed with your cancellation/modification request.

To ensure your cancellation or modification is reflected accurately on your Hotel Excellence! account, do not cancel or modify through your confirmation email link, your Marriott Bonvoy account, the Marriott Bonvoy app, or via the phone with reservations or the property. Cancellations or modifications made without being signed into the Travel Agent website will not be reflected back to your Hotel Excellence! account, therefore impacting your ability to make future Fam-Tastic reservations for the same date or at the same hotel.

If you need further assistance with a Fam-Tastic reservation, please contact one of the Customer Engagement Centers via http://www.marriott.com/help/global-phone-reservation-numbers.mi , and ask to be transferred to the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line and a specialist will assist you.

How can I change the arrival/departure dates on my Fam-Tastic reservation?

How do i change the rate for an existing reservation to the fam-tastic rate.

Visit www.marriott.com/travelagents to access the Fam-Tastic booking page. Check availability for the location of your preference at the Fam-Tastic rate. If you can book at the Fam-Tastic rate, you will need to cancel your original reservation.  Please make note of your original reservation’s cancellation policies.

My Hotel Excellence! Dashboard says “Restriction” for my Fam-Tastic status. What does this mean? Why can’t I access the Fam-Tastic rate booking page?

“Restriction” is the status of any advisor affiliated with an agency location that is not compliant with Marriott’s Ratio Policy .  Affiliated advisors are restricted from booking Marriott’s Fam-Tastic and Travel Agent rates. When imposing this restriction, Marriott communicates to the agency owner or senior executive.  Any questions related to this status should be directed to your agency.

What is Marriott’s Ratio Policy?

To ensure we are partnering with intermediaries that are also focused on driving profitable business to our hotels, Marriott utilizes a Ratio Policy. The full policy can be referenced here .

Moscow in 1 Day (Walking tour)

Welcome to visit moscow tours.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad.  We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.

Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.

Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.

Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.

Moscow is a big and busy  megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.

Saint Petersburg is our second capital,  the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens.  In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!

If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!

Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again.  Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.

Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Tours to Moscow

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. FAQs for Russia

Q. where should i shop in moscow.

A. Moscow has huge shopping malls that vie for first place with the local street markets. So while you can find almost anything at the malls, for the more authentic items, such as junk jewelry, handicrafts, spices, toys, visit the street stalls.

Q. What can I buy in Saint Petersburg?

A. If you feel inclined, then real and faux fur are pretty cheap here, and they are really great quality. Or you can pick up souvenirs such as magnets, postcards, paintings of bottles of vodka.

Q. What are the main dishes of Russia?

A. Russian cuisine is all about high-protein ingredients, so expect a lot of cottage cheese, eggs, fish and meat. Three dishes that you absolutely shouldnt miss include:

  • Bliny: A thin crepe, stuffed with your choice of fillings
  • Sirniki: Special cottage cheese stuffed bliny
  • Pelmeni: Dumplings made of fish or meat

Q. Can we increase the stay in a particular city on this trip?

A. Yes, you can increase the duration of this package, but make sure to request such changes well in advance to the travel agent or the tour operator, so that no last minute problems arise.

Q. What sort of nightlife does Saint Petersburg have?

A. The nightlife of Saint Petersburg is definitely something that you would want to be a part of. There are plenty of rocking clubs and discos, which do a roaring business all through the night, especially in the Fontanka river embankment area, which also offers tremendous views.
