Play classic arcade games

Kids of all ages (or anyone who considers themselves to be young at heart) will have a blast at the  Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum . Guests pay $12 per hour for access to the interactive museum's 26 vintage 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s pinball machines. More than 90 public, private, and semi-private golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area make it a favorite destination for golf fans from all over. Visit a world-class art museum

Once you've had your fill of the beach, head inside to check out the impressive permanent collection of Southern art, antique maps, historical prints, and crafts at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum . Offering a variety of books, jewelry, stationery, art supplies, and home decor, the gift shop is a great place to pick up artsy souvenirs.

Listen to live music for free

There's nothing like stumbling upon a great band and listening to live music, especially when it's free. And you can do just that on Main St. at Ocean Blvd. in North Myrtle Beach during the Music on Main Concert Series on Thursdays from June through September, or during any of the other festivals held here throughout the year.

Get hands-on at a Children's Museum

Traveling with little ones? Head to the  Myrtle Beach EdVenture Children’s Museum , where kids can get in on the action with family-friendly exhibits showing them how things work at a supermarket, at the beach (geared toward ages three and under), in a cafe, and at the doctor's and dentist's office. Other displays focus on STEM topics such as space and flight, while a few more take a closer look at auto mechanics, motor skills and balance, performing arts, construction, art, magnets, and wind tunnels.

Check out Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Garden s is home to 9,127 acres featuring stunning botanical gardens, an extensive collection of American sculptures, the Lowcountry Zoo, and the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve. Whether you make time to visit just one or several of these attractions, you're in for a real treat.

Take in the area's natural beauty

Luckily for nature lovers, the Myrtle Beach area is home to two state parks that are both worth visiting. Make time for Myrtle Beach State Park , an oceanfront destination with nature trails, bike paths, equestrian trails, a fishing pier, and several picnic areas. Located at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park features 2,500 acres of hiking trails, marshes, bays, and opportunities for overnight camping.

Sip the day away at a nearby winery

Duplin Winery at North Myrtle Beach is a great place to sample a variety of vintages while enjoying cheese, crackers, and a virtual tour of its Rose Hill, North Carolina, home base. As part of the tour, you'll have a chance to hand-bottle your own wine to take home. Nearby, Carolina Vineyards Winery , located near the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach, offers a variety of tastings, including frozen wine during the summer.

Or try local beers at a microbrewery

New South Brewing , a microbrewery in Myrtle Beach that's been open since 1998, features ales, lagers, IPAs, and seasonal specialties such as Oktoberfest and Dark Star Porter. Nearby, Tidal Creek Brewhouse focuses on small-batch craft beers and also serves freshly brewed coffee and Lowcountry food favorites (think fried green tomatoes, burgers, and chicken wings) in a friendly atmosphere.

Geek out over classic cars

Classic car lovers can geek out over all their favorite models at the  Wheels of Yesteryear Vintage Automobile Museum . Open in Myrtle Beach since 2009, the museum showcases a collection of more than 150 American-made cars and trucks that husband-and-wife founders Paul and Carol Cummings have been assembling over decades. Visit the gift shop to pick up nostalgic die-cast collectible versions of your favorite vehicles, plus T-shirts and other car-centric souvenirs.

Learn about wildlife at Ripley's Aquarium

Courtesy of Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Don't miss  Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach ; not only is it a wonderful place to view sea creatures like stingrays up close, but also sloths and other South American critters. Check the website before you go to book additional experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours of the Marine Science Center, penguin encounters, glass-bottom boat rides, sleepover parties, or the ever-popular Breakfast With a Mermaid.

Embrace your inner pirate

Get ready to don cheesy pirate gear and practice your best "Arrrrrrr!" Myrtle Beach — and the entire Carolina coast for that matter — was once a haven for Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and heaps of other infamous pirates back in the day, so why not get in on some family-friendly pirate action on a themed cruise while you're in town? Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise  and  Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach each offer kid-friendly sailings complete with temporary pirate tattoos, fake pirate mustaches, costumes for the kiddos, stories about those who once sailed through these waters, and a treasure-seeking adventure that ends in an epic water cannon battle.

Cruise down the intracoastal on a riverboat

If you'd like to enjoy a boat ride that's a little less pirate-y, you can always opt to cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway on a  Barefoot Queen riverboat instead. This premier North Myrtle Beach attraction offers several indoor and outdoor decks to spread out on, with onboard narration and entertainment, as well as a fully stocked bar to enjoy while you take in views of the surrounding area. Scenic daytime and lunch cruises are 1.5 hours long, while dinner cruises are slightly longer at two hours.

Master the waves at Kokopelli Surf Camp

Pick up a new beach hobby at Kokopelli Surf Camp , which has group or private lessons designed for every level, whether you're just starting out or want to brush up your skills. Three-day camp sessions are also offered for kids, while surfboard rentals are available if you'd rather do your own thing.

Experience early-1900s farm life

Part of the Horry County Museum, the L.W. Paul Living History Farm  lets you see what it was like to live in the area as a farmer between 1900 and 1955. Demonstrations and presentations change seasonally according to what's happening on the farm. Guided tours are free and last roughly one hour, so it's worth checking out if you're suddenly craving a little time away from the beach.

Tour a popular local distillery

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Twelve 33 Distillery for a chance to see how some of your favorite spirits are created "from grain to glass," and how locally sourced ingredients make the craft cocktails served here really stand out. Among the distillery's specialties are several types of rye whiskey, spiced rum, vodka, and gin with ties to South Carolina's prohibition era. Pro tip: Book the VIP Tour to enjoy a special tasting flight in the distillery's secret speakeasy.

15 best things to do in and around Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach offers family activities, nature excursions, great seafood – and plenty of stretches of sand and surf, too © Getty Images

Wide, sandy and sun-drenched, the Grand Strand in South Carolina is a 60-mile stretch of captivating coastline.

This region offers 14 communities, each with its own personality – with Myrtle Beach as the charismatic center of gravity. Beachgoers have their pick of inviting shores, from crowded and lively to remote and quiet. Nature lovers are also spoiled for choice: salt marshes teem with wildlife, trails ribbon through maritime forests and botanical gardens bloom year-round. Fresh seafood abounds everywhere. And family fun, from putt-putt to zip lines, is a hallmark of the region.

If you only have a few days (and with the caveat that some attractions are only open in warmer months), here are some of the top things to do in and around Myrtle Beach.

Spend a day on the beach

Myrtle Beach is the anchor of the Grand Strand, and it’s the best bet for active beachgoers. Head here for water sports, oceanfront dining, Boardwalk shenanigans and summer festivals. Surfside Beach hugs the coast just south of Myrtle Beach. Also known as Family Beach, this two-mile stretch of sand has lifeguards, a gently sloping coastline and wacky golf-cart parades. It has also been recognized for its autism-friendly businesses .

Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park offer a more low-key experience as well as opportunities for hiking, camping and wildlife watching. Further south, Litchfield Beach earns loyal fans for its crowd-free coastline and relaxing small-town vibe. Neighbor Pawleys Island encourages all-day relaxing with its empty white-sand beaches, protective dunes and famous roped hammocks.

Ride the SkyWheel

This soaring landmark is no mere Ferris wheel. Rising 187ft above the downtown Boardwalk, the  SkyWheel offers 10-to-15-minute “flights” in 42 temperature-controlled gondolas, which each hold up to six passengers. Most of the gondolas are fully accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, while more than one million LED lights wow onlookers during the dynamic evening light show.

Savor fresh seafood in Murrells Inlet

Twenty-five minutes south of Myrtle Beach, this inviting fishing village is known as the seafood capital of South Carolina. Fishing boats pull up beside waterfront restaurants in Murrells Inlet, where chefs await the day’s catch. Linked by the half-mile wooden MarshWalk, popular seafood restaurants overlook weathered piers and lush marshlands, and offer a prime choice for a lovely evening out. One sure bet for fresh seafood? Head to Wicked Tuna , a hook-to-plate seafood restaurant that overlooks the inlet and employs its own fleet of fishing boats.

Kayak the coast

Paddlers seeking wildlife, coastal beauty and solitude have numerous options within a short drive of downtown Myrtle Beach. Salt marshes hug the coast at Murrells Inlet, where kayak tours float past pelicans, egrets, sea turtles and dolphins. Other trips explore the swampy wonders of the Waccamaw River and its moss-draped cypress trees, or drift past lonely islands and empty beaches strewn with shells and sand dollars. Most guided trips are great for families and last a half-day, with many trips offered year-round.

Go shag dancing at Fat Harold’s

Shag dancing (known as “shagging” in these parts) is the official dance of South Carolina. According to lore, this easy-going swing dance akin to a slow jitterbug was birthed in North Myrtle Beach in the 1940s and 1950s, with doo-wop, old-time R&B and beach music providing the irresistible soundtrack. You can watch – and join in on – all the moves at Fat Harold’s Beach Club and surrounding dance clubs most nights of the week. Lessons at Fat Harold’s are $10 on Monday nights – no partner needed – and free every other Tuesday night.

Marvel at a Night of a Thousand Candles

The most enchanting place in the Palmetto State in winter is  Brookgreen Gardens , 16 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The Nights of a Thousand Candles take place from late November through the early New Year: after sunset, a tunnel of live oaks, all wrapped in strands of white lights, funnels visitors from the entrance to an illuminated wonderland of flowers, shrubs and trees. Statues of gods and goddesses cast mysterious shadows across fountains and pools in the twinkling darkness. These events sell out, so buy a ticket before your visit.

Horseback ride on the beach...and beyond

Horseback riding is allowed on designated sections of the Grand Strand from the third Saturday in November through the end of February. This means you can gallop – or perhaps gently walk – along the surf in winter. Most guided trips run 90 minutes and cost about $75;  Grand Strand Horseback Riding leads outings from Myrtle Beach State Park . In warmer months, when the beaches are off-limits to horses, many companies guide riders across inland farms, where you might see cows and canals instead of sand and surf.

Stroll the Boardwalk

Anchored by the SkyWheel, the 1.2-mile Boardwalk is crammed with arcade games, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, volleyball courts, beachwear stores and busy hotels. The all-American scene is not to be missed in summer, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Officially dubbed the Oceanfront Boardwalk & Promenade, the walkway stretches from the 2nd Ave pier area to 14th Ave North. The family-owned Gay Dolphin gift shop, open continuously for 75 years, hawks shells, t-shirts and souvenirs. RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar serves up cocktails with ocean views.

Bird-watch at Huntington Beach State Park

Scan the skies and salt marshes for great egrets, blue herrings and even bald eagles at Huntington Beach State Park , a favorite stopover for migrating birds and one of the top birding spots in the Southeast. Birdwatchers have spotted more than 350 species of birds at this 2500-acre park, which is home to maritime forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, shrub thickets, beaches and dunes. Pick up a bird checklist then stroll the marsh-flanked Causeway for the best viewing. The new Nature Center also has a birding area.

Seek out high-octane adventures for families

Smell the popcorn, hear the screams and feel the ocean breeze on the Swamp Fox, a classic wooden roller coaster that careens around Family Kingdom , an oceanfront amusement park packed tight with 35 rides. Funplex Myrtle Beach , which opened in 2021 at the northern end of the Boardwalk, has seven rides including the Sky Velocity, which drops riders six stories. At the beach, several family members can float above the ocean at once on parasailing trips – reaching heights of up to 500ft. Below, jet skis bounce across the waves with banana boats in tow as families cling tight.

Wander through WonderWorks

This eye-catching, upside-down building is the hub of this three-in-one attraction , an immersive adventure destination that is one part children’s museum, one part amusement park and one part science lab. Various interactive “wonder zones” bring scientific concepts to life, while the outdoor Soar + Explore area boosts the adrenaline factor with a zip line and three-level ropes course. WonderWorks is not unique to Myrtle Beach, but its mix of interactive physical and cerebral activities provides a fun alternative to a day of lying out in the sun.

A woman puts at a mini-golf course next to a palm tree and fiberglass elephant in Myrtle Beach

Putt-putt with pirates and dinosaurs

Rome has ruins. London has pubs. And Myrtle Beach has mini-golf courses, with at last count more than 50 of them puttin’ their stuff (sorry). Some sources even say that the Grand Strand has more courses per square mile than any place in the country. What makes these 18-hole courses memorable? Their exuberant embrace of wacky themes. Pirate ships, dinosaur kingdoms, jungle wonderlands and Hawaiian backdrops have entertained families since the first course was built here in 1930. No ifs, ands, or...putts about it.

Immerse yourself in Gullah culture

Even after the brutal Middle Passage, enslaved workers on coastal South Carolina plantations retained many traditions from their West African homelands. Delve into this rich history, memorable customs and beautiful crafts in the coastal village of Georgetown, home to the Gullah Museum and the Rice Museum.

Zenobia Harper offers tours exploring Gullah culture several days per week at Hopsewee Plantation, a former rice-growing estate on the North Santee River. Workshops here teach sweetgrass basket weaving, a Gullah tradition since the 1700s. Brookgreen Gardens, built on the site of four former rice plantations, offers a weekly Gullah program (Jan–Nov). The Lowcountry Trail here spotlights the lives of those who owned and worked the fields.

Hit up Broadway on the Beach

With its unabashed embrace of shiny corporate excess, Broadway at the Beach may not offer an afternoon of Lowcountry authenticity. But this sprawling shopping, dining and entertainment complex – which surrounds a 23-acre lake – knows how to bring the rah-rah. Highlights include a lake-crossing zip line, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park carousel, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, dueling pianos at Crocodile Rocks and Ripley’s Aquarium, where penguins and the jellyfish beckon.

Sip craft beer

The outdoor beer garden at Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach embraces backyard fun with hammocks, firepits, bocce ball, cornhole and a playground. Grand Strand Brewing Co, which opened in 2021, fills a two-story building in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Enjoy live music and outdoor seating (including Adirondack chairs and picnic tables) as you sip an Airbrush Hazy IPA. Serious beer samplers will want to make the one-mile drive inland for the Dirty Myrtle DIPA at hyperlocal brewery New South Brewery, around since 1998.

Myrtle Beach Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach is from June to August when the weather is just right for enjoying the beach. You can expect some afternoon rain showers during this time of year (especially July), and keep in mind that the region's hurricane season will last from June through November. You'll also experience some warm temperatures and slightly cheaper rates if you visit March through May, but you may have to contend with spring breakers from area colleges crowding the beach and nearby hotels. Autumn ushers in room bargains and cooler temperatures that range from the high 70s to the mid-40s. During winter, chilly temperatures introduce the lowest rates (and zero crowds), but be aware that some area attractions and restaurants will be closed or offer reduced hours.

What You Need to Know

But Myrtle also knows how to party Myrtle Beach is a spring break destination for college kids, so keep that in mind when scheduling your trip.

How to Save Money in Myrtle Beach

Rent a home  If hotel rates are too pricey, consider reserving a vacation rental. Not only is it a cost-effective option for large groups, but with your own kitchen, you have an affordable dining-in option too.

Visit the tourism board  Myrtle Beach's Tourism Board has coupons for all sorts of attractions, restaurants, shopping and more. There are visitors' centers in the bus terminal, in the airport and on North Oak Street. Visit its website for more information.

Visit in the offseason  Hotel rates jump sky-high in summer. Consider visiting in the fall or even the winter. You'll be able to find more cheap hotel rates this time of year, and a bevy of holiday events will keep you entertained if the beach is too cold.

What to Eat

Chain restaurants – including Hard Rock Café, Senor Frog's and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville – are all over Myrtle Beach. If you are looking for a diverse and innovative foodie scene, this is not where you want to go. But one thing the city doesn't lack is variety. A large selection of restaurants is located along Kings Highway (U.S. Highway 17), so much so that it's often referred to as "Restaurant Row." A decent number of locally owned eateries can also be found, with the predominant cuisine theme being seafood. Mr. Fish , Captain George's Seafood Restaurant and Sea Captain's House are all well-reviewed spots.

You'll also be able to find some more upscale spots; local and tourist favorites include  Sole Italian Restaurant , Fire & Smoke and  Aspen Grille .

Getting Around Myrtle Beach

The best way to get around Myrtle Beach is by car. If you're going to spend most of your time around the beachfront hotels, you can easily manage on foot. However, a car is handy for traveling farther distances since the bus is your only public transportation option. Car rental agencies are located just beyond the baggage claim area in Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), and plenty of taxis and hotel shuttle services are lined up outside the terminal.

If you're visiting Myrtle Beach in the peak summer season, make sure to claim a spot on the sand early in the day.

Top 5 airlines flying to myrtle beach.

Everything was great except for the seat. The backrest would not stay in the upright position.

I usually have a positive experience with Delta. Complimentary upgrades are always nice!

Flight delayed about 2 hrs so it made it a VERY late night

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

Worst flight in my life. Only was scheduled for a 45 min flight to get our connection flight. It was late by 40 minutes and we missed our connection. Delta was totally useless trying to help and unable to get my family on the next flight because they overbooked it Thus had to get a hotel at my expense and lost a day at Disney as a result. Cost me about a $1000 if you add 2 hotels meals shuttles etc to get thru the day Awful customer service by Delta in Detroit totally useless people

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

The net issue I had was with the gate agent. We had added a carryon to our boarding pass when we checked bags. When I got to the boarding gate the agent was rude asking why I had a backpack - I said I added it - even had an orange tag on it. She ripped my tag off and swung her monitor around to show me how she was right- saying it isn’t wasn’t listed - only a checked bag. I explained again that I wasn’t sure what the issue was but I wouldn’t have an orange tag if I hadn’t added it. Then she finally checked my husband’s boarding pass and found that the agent at checkin had added my carryon to his boarding pass instead of mine. She sent me on my way without my orange tag. Was a bit embarrassing for me the tone she used with me assuming I was trying to get away with something.

Gate agent asked if I could switch seats so a family could sit together. Agent moved me to a seat in the front of the plane, no charge. It was easy. The agent did a great job.

Great seat space. However food and drink prices outrageous. Jabbing to pay for a carry on bag or stuck paying at the gate too much.

Every Allegiant Air flight I've ever taken has been delayed. This flight was delayed a full 2 hours. It was excuse after excuse after excuse. It was a flight from southern Florida. They made us board the plane on time, but made us wait for 2 hours on the tarmac. Because the engines were kept shut off, so was the air conditioning. One can only imagine how hot the air was in the cabin over those 2 hours on the tarmac, while in the hot Florida sun. Just terrible.

Actually, for the price, I'm willing to put up with a little discomfort (upright chairs) and at times inconveniences (like any airline), lack of entertainment (I can bring my own). My flight was non stop and smooth. I would fly this route again.

The flight was delayed 6 hours and we were only offered an $8 food credit. My husband stood in line to get the credit for 45 minutes and when he got close to the end of the line the computers went down.

Worst ever! Flight cancelled supposedly for weather even though we k ow of many others who flew into Bangor same time no problem. At the airport there was no customer service at all just refund and no possibility of rebook for 3-4 days. Aweful won’t fly with them again!!

It’s a budget airline so adjust expectations accordingly. Nothing is without a fee but such is necessary for tickets to remain so affordable.

No complaints. It’s a budget airline so can’t expect any frills.

My TSA number was missing from my ticket which shouldn’t have happened since it’s in my file. The on board flight attendant who was a male, did not want to help me put my luggage in the overhead bin and made a very rude comment and was very unpleasant. The good… the woman who fixed my ticket with the TSA number was excellent and I had extra legroom which was perfect.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

Trip was smooth bumpy from the wind but no issues at all the crew attendant was very pleasant and had great customer service

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

The flight was delayed instead of leaving at 11 it left at 12.20

Plane took off without me, my stepdad and a dozen other passengers. It went from an hour delay to boarding in 15 montures without notifying anyone. Names were not called overhead. Now I’m missing a day of work and stuck in Charolette overnight paying for a hotel and Ubers out of pocket

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Average - flew with Jet Blue internal and it was far more comfortable and better food and entertainment. Notable difference

Flight from SBP to DFW 1. They rerouted us through PHX 2. Delayed flight out of SBP for 3 hrs so we missed our connection Downgrade on rerouted flight. Back of the plane, center seats, didn't sit together 4. Return flight out of DFW same exact thing. Delayed, missed connection, Downgrade + they lost our luggage! A complete mess.

On the new 319 NEO? seatback entertainment system did not work even when the flight attendant rebooted it. At least I had my cell phone to connect with wifi.

Good flights. Departure and arrivals were on time. DFW was a little problematic in that the Skytrain without prior notice bypassed the Echo terminal so that delayed my arrival at my connecting flight.

Do not eat the bagel! Otherwise, good albeit late, breakfast in first. Boarding downgrade only because flight was delayed due to plane change due to undisclosed problem with original aircraft. I did not use entertainment.

Because I can’t stand very long in one place, I was allowed to reword.

It was a good flight. Of course it was full, but it went well.

Overall the flights pretty good. The snacks we’re good and they were plenty of them. Both boarding and deplaning went quickly.

On time and fast. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

The weight limit per bag was really low - 40 lbs - so we had to pay extra. Then, they said their carry on size was 14x18x8, and we measured our bag very carefully. It was within the limit, yet they said it was too big, so we ended up paying an extra $100 for that too!! So it wasn’t the cheap flight we thought it would be. Then, they moved up our initial flight to depart 3 hours earlier which meant we had to be out on the road by 7 am and then have a 6 hour layover and we got home at 2am. It was a grueling day. I won’t be flying with them again.

Overall it was a good experience. Stewards were very kind and professional. The departure and arrival times were as promised. Plane was clean.

The seat are terrible. Don’t even think of sleeping on a Spirit flight. The kids that run the plane aka flight attendants are pretty rude and straight forward. They get the job done but without class.

No frills, limited comfort, no food, no entertainment, but fine

I had a death in my family and booked my flight on Spirit. My flight was cancelled the morning of my flight, no explanation, no help to rebook, nobody to talk to. The next available flight was 2days later !!!! Terrible airline, will NEVER fly with them again!

Flight was canceled. Knew there was weather, and were notified of 20 min delayed, and then suddenly canceled. Next reschedule was for 2 days. No help other than to refund. Thankfully full refund and appreciate that. I appreciate discounted airline but felt they could've done more for customer inconvenience.

The seat was very uncomfortable from Boston to Nashville. Otherwise the flight was excellent.

Terrible as usual!!!! Very unprofessional and rude flight attendants! You get what you pay for! HORRIBLE

There was a .79 discrepancy between the cost of the flight and what was paid. Spirit didn't let me obtain my boarding pass until the .79 (seventy nine cents) was paid. Contacting their customer service to resolve the issue was a nightmare that involved many wait minutes and two different departments. The price Kayak gave to Affirm, whom I used to pay for the tickets, and the price Spirit charged for the flight were off by the .79. I almost lost the ticket because of the hassle.

Myrtle Beach Road Trip: Mileage and Estimated Driving Times

John Coletti  / Getty Images

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with 60 miles of spectacular sandy beaches is home to over a hundred golf courses and is an affordable family destination—especially if you're driving. It's within doable road trip distance from quite a few cities across the United States beyond the Southeast.

If you are planning to drive to Myrtle Beach, this listing of approximate mileage and the estimated driving time between Myrtle Beach and U.S. cities will help you with your travel planning.

Riddhish Chakraborty / Getty Images

Cities in the Southeast are within easy driving distance to Myrtle Beach, especially those in the Carolinas.

  • Atlanta Straight Mileage: 313 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 360 miles Estimated Driving Time: 6 hours
  • Columbia, South Carolina Straight Mileage: 122 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 150 miles Estimated Driving Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • Raleigh, North Carolina Straight Mileage: 149 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 195 miles Estimated Driving Time: 3 hours and 20 minutes
  • Richmond, Virginia Straight Mileage: 281 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 340 miles Estimated Driving Time: 5 hours and 40 minutes

Cities in the Mid-South, like Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville, are quite a bit farther away and likely mean a long one-day or two-short-days road trip.

  • Charleston, West Virginia Straight Mileage: 358 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 440 miles Estimated Driving Time: 8 hours
  • Louisville, Kentucky Straight Mileage: 494 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 650 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 40 minutes
  • Memphis, Tennessee Straight Mileage: 632 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 745 miles Estimated Driving Time: 12 hours and 5 minutes

Residents of the landlocked Midwest yearn for the beach and ocean waves, and no matter which coast they choose, it's a long drive. Driving from most cities in the Midwest means a solid two-day trip behind the wheel. Pack the car and enjoy the scenery.

  • Chicago Straight Mileage: 740 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 945 miles Estimated Driving Time: 15 hours and 15 minutes
  • Columbus, Ohio Straight Mileage: 490 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 600 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 35 minutes

  • St. Louis Straight Mileage: 715 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 890 miles Estimated Driving Time: 14 hours and 15 minutes

Northeasterners have plenty of beaches nearby, but in the wintertime, they are not appealing. If you are jonesing for some sun and surf in February, Myrtle Beach is a long one-day drive away. If you don't like driving more than eight hours in one stretch, you can make it a leisurely two-day trip.

  • New York Straight Mileage: 558 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 685 miles Estimated Driving Time: 11 hours and 20 minutes
  • Pittsburgh Straight Mileage: 473 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 625 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 45 minutes

Any fan of the Grand Strand will attest that the best time to visit Myrtle Beach can be nearly any month of the year. But because every visitor’s vacation wants and needs are a bit different, we decided to crunch some numbers and gather data to account for Myrtle Beach visitors by month, the cost, weather, and events to recommend the best time to go.

Planning a trip where you get the best deal with the ideal weather and lots of things to do is a balancing act, but luckily Myrtle Beach has something attractive to offer visitors any time of the year. Experts suggest booking your trip at least 30–60 days in advance to enjoy the best rates, so plan ahead to target the month that matches your vacation style best. You can always get a jump on planning by checking out our hotels and finding the latest deals to lock in a great rate anytime.

Here’s a month-by-month ranking with pros and cons so you can decide what is the best month to go to Myrtle Beach:

Pros: Fall festival season, low rates, still beach weather

Cons: Chilly evening temps toward the end of the month

Biggest Events: Fall Bike Week, Oktoberfest Celebrations, St. John’s Greek Festival, Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon, Taste of Town

It may come as a surprise to some, but many locals and longtime visitors will back us up in saying that October truly is the best time of year to visit Myrtle Beach. The hot summer sun is gone, but the weather and the ocean remain warm enough to hit the beach. Combine that with great hotel rates, significantly less-crowded beaches, and tons of amazing activities and fall festivals and it’s no wonder October is the winner!

Things To Do

Avg. occupancy rate, avg. daily room rate, avg. air temp., avg. water temp., 2. september.

Pros: Less crowded beaches, some of the year’s best weather, fall golf season

Cons: Some summertime attractions begin to close

Biggest Events: Irish Italian Festival, Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival, SOS Fall Migration

September is a close runner-up for the best month to go to Myrtle Beach, and folks who like hot days instead of just nice, warm ones may actually prefer the sun and fun this time of year. Since most schools are back in session after Labor Day, the crowds of families on vacation tend to dissipate, leaving plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the glory of late summer and early fall. Though some of the amusement parks and water parks close or begin to shorten their operating hours, most attractions remain open, offering the same summer season entertainment without the frustrating lines at attractions, long restaurant wait times, and traffic congestion.

travel to myrtle beach

Pros: Great festivals and events, summer weather without the expensive hotel rates

Cons: Bike Week crowds, not all summer attractions are open yet

Biggest Events: Military appreciation celebrations, Bike Week and motorcycle rallies, Blue Crab Festival

Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the tourism season, but many savvy visitors like to come to Myrtle Beach earlier in May before the big summer rush begins. To avoid crowds and traffic congestion, plan to arrive before the Myrtle Beach Bike Week and Atlantic Beach Bikefest take place. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, the second half of May is an ideal time to visit.

Pros: Some of the best spring weather, spring golf season

Cons: Some seasonal attractions are still closed, more expensive tee times, occasional rainy weather

Biggest Events: Monday After The Masters Celebrity Pro-Am, Myrtle Beach International Film Festival, Dragon Boat Festival

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach for golfers or anyone looking to thaw out after a cold winter is April. Mid-spring brings excellent weather, with warm days and cool evenings that provide optimal conditions for exploring the Grand Strand or taking in a few rounds of golf. Because a bevy of golfers arrives for the spring season, tee times may be harder to book and golf rates a bit more expensive, but you should still be able to find opportunities to enjoy the area’s endless buffet of great Myrtle Beach golf courses . And for non-golfing visitors, because the crowds remain thin, April is a great time for a trip to Myrtle Beach .

5. December

Pros: Some of most affordable hotels rates of the year, great holiday events

Cons: Unpredictable weather

Biggest Events: Nights of a Thousand Candles, Beach Ball Classic Basketball Tournament, South’s Grandest Christmas Show, Broadway at the Beach Christmas Parade

Going to Myrtle Beach in December won’t exactly be warm, but it still beats being snowed in. Even in our coldest months we still get a few 70-degree sunny days popping up here and there, so you can walk the beach and enjoy the gorgeous views. If you’re in a holiday mood, there are tons of reasons to visit Myrtle Beach during Christmas , from spectacular holiday shows and parades, to tree lightings, lights displays, and much more. We do have plenty of great shopping as well, so why not come and enjoy the outlets, malls, and other shopping centers as you check off that holiday shopping list?

travel to myrtle beach

Pros: Start of spring golf season, lowest hotel rates of the spring

Cons: Can be rainy at times, Spring Break season

Biggest Events: Run To The Sun Car Show , National Shag Dance Championships, Can-Am Days, NMB St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Surfside Beach BBQ Festival

Though spring doesn’t officially begin until March 20, the longer days and warmer temperatures begin arriving early on the Grand Strand. Going to Myrtle Beach in March will treat you to some of the first truly beautiful days of the year and some of the most fun Spring Break nightlife too. Spring golf season—the area’s most popular time for golfers—also begins in March. Many local businesses go out of their way to cater to golfers, so many find March one of the best months to visit Myrtle Beach. Some seasonal attractions and restaurants begin to emerge from their winter slumber this time of year and seasonal events give visitors plenty to do.

Pros: Best beach weather of the year, all top attractions are open

Cons: Some of largest crowds and highest hotel rates of the year

Biggest Events: Carolina Country Music Festival, Conway Riverfest, Hot Summer Nights

If you’re looking to get the full Grand Strand vacation experience, June is the best time to visit Myrtle Beach. When schools let out and summer tourism kicks into gear, the number of visitors by month hits its peak. Hundreds of thousands of families flock to the area to enjoy the seemingly endless list of things to do , and every attraction, restaurant, and shopping spot rolls out the red carpet for these summer vacationers. Although the crowds also mean congested roads, busy attractions, and packed restaurants, as long as you’re willing to wait, you’re sure to enjoy your stay.

Avg. Air Temp./h4>

Pros: Great beach weather, least-crowded summer month

Cons: Higher room rates, humidity often high

Biggest Events: World Am Golf Tournament, Craftsman Classic Arts & Crafts Show, Tax-Free Weekend

Though summer really begins to wind down from mid-July on, August is still a solid time to visit Myrtle Beach as all the summer attractions remain open but the intense crowds begin to give way, providing slightly less occupied hotels and roads. Though the heat and humidity can still be stifling at times, August is not usually as rainy as July and there are plenty of things to do, including free summer concerts like Music on Main in North Myrtle Beach and Hot Summer Nights in Myrtle Beach.

9. November

Pros: Holiday attractions open early, great rates and deals on hotels

Cons: Chilly temps, shorter days

Biggest Events: Dickens Christmas Show, Carolina Beach Music Awards, S.C. State Bluegrass Festival, Intracoastal Christmas Regatta

Visiting Myrtle Beach in November means shorter days and cooler weather, dramatically dropping the number of times you can hit the beach or golf. But November does usher in some major discounts on hotels and resorts as they scramble to keep rooms occupied this time of year. If you’re crazy about the holidays, you can surely get a jump on the season here, as many of the Christmas shows, attractions, and events kick off around the first of the month.

Pros: All attractions and restaurants are open

Cons: Crowded beaches, highest rates of year, extreme humidity, hot temperatures

Biggest Events: Independence Day celebrations, Murrells Inlet Boat Parade, Sounds of Summer Concert Series, Father Son Team Golf Classic

Let’s get this out of the way first: Yes, July is by far the most popular month for people to visit Myrtle Beach, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best time to go. While everything is open during the thick of the tourism season and the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean help offset some of the stifling heat, the drawbacks may outweigh those benefits for some visitors. Once you factor in the pop-up thunderstorms (thanks, humidity!), the packed beaches, longer waits for restaurants, traffic on the roadways, plus room rates at their highest, you can see why other months are better times to visit Myrtle Beach than July.

11. January

Pros: Lowest rates of the year, no crowds, great for snowbirds

Cons: Cold weather, many restaurants and attractions are closed, no major events

Biggest Events: Myrtle Beach Restaurant Week, Grand Strand Boat Show, SOS Mid-Winter Break

The Grand Strand after the holidays is considered a wasteland for some, but for other visitors—specifically those looking for a refuge from the great white north—January can be the best time to go to Myrtle Beach. Though it is smack dab in the middle of the off-season, there are still many reasons to visit Myrtle Beach in January , including avoiding the hassle and crowds of the high season. Many snowbirds from the Northeast, Midwest, and Canada opt to spend the off-season here because the weather is warmer than where they hail from and the rates are great for rooms or seasonal condo rentals near the beach.

12. February

Pros: Low room rates, no crowds

Cons: Snow?!?!, some restaurants and attractions remain closed

Biggest Events: Guests artists at The Carolina Opry, Valentine’s Day

Much like in January, crowds in Myrtle Beach in February are thin, seasonal attractions remain closed, and the weather is chilly (it has even been known to snow a little this time of year), but there are still things to do in Myrtle Beach in February to make your vacation there worth taking. The room rates and occupancy are trending upward as hotels and resorts look to spring, but you’ll still find good hotel deals to make your trip worthwhile.

Even though there are months that land near the bottom of our ranking, there is never REALLY a bad time to come to Myrtle Beach. You’ll find events to enjoy whether you prefer bustling crowds and lots of action or quiet beaches and cooler temps. Plus, the hotels and resorts have plenty to offer anyone visiting the Grand Strand.

At Myrtle Beach, nothing is boring! The best thing about this place is that you’ll learn something along with having an adventure. The Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center is packed with celebrity wax figures and family-friendly amenities. Plus, the Myrtle Beach Skywheel lets you get stunning beach views from the top.

Besides these, the Family Kingdom Amusement Park is a perfect place to be with the kids. If you want to go shopping, there are endless options, including The Market Common, Rainbow Harbor, Gay Dolphin Gift Cove, Tanger Outlets, and Broadway at the Beach.

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach with kids is from March to May or September to October . This is not the peak season and the best time to visit because you’ll enjoy the city without huge traffic and bustling crowds. Plus, the hotel rates are also more affordable than in the peak season. Plus, March also marks the start of spring, which brings more beautiful vibes to the Grand Strand.

The peak season is from June to August. Not only is the weather perfect during these months, but there are many fun-filled summer events. If you love splashing in the water while the sun shines on you, June to August is the perfect time to be in Myrtle Beach. However, all the top tourist spots are mostly crowded during these months.

June is the best time to enjoy the beach weather, plus all the top attractions are open. However, you’ll come across huge crowds, and the rates for everything, including hoteling and accommodation, are high too. The biggest events during this month include Conway Riverfest, Carolina Country Music Festival, and Hot Summer Nights.

In July, you can expect some afternoon rain showers. This is also the peak season, so the rates are higher, and places are overly crowded. You can also enjoy the Independence day celebrations and Murrells Inlet Boat Parade. August is the least crowded month of the peak season.

The cheapest time to visit Myrtle Beach is in November and December. This is the off-peak season, and tourism is at its lowest, so you’ll get accommodation at a discounted rate. However, some attractions might have reduced operating hours or might be closed for the entire off-season. The worst time to visit Myrtle Beach is January and February because of the rainfall and chilly weather.

In Myrtle Beach, the summers are hot and humid, and the winters are cold and windy. The weather is humid and partly cloudy across the year. The climate of Myrtle Beach is referred to as warm and temperate. The city is located in the Northern hemisphere and the summer months get abundant sunshine and warm temperatures.

Myrtle Beach’s hot season is from May to September, and the average high temperature is above 81°F. The hottest month of the summer season is July, during which the temperature can rise to 90°F; the average high is 84°F.

The coolest seasons are from December to February and the first few days of March. The average temperature during these months remains below 62°F. The coldest month is January, during which the average temperature reaches 30°F. The winters are milder compared to the northern states, but they are still not suitable for Myrtle Beach vacation purposes.

For instance, swim with a buddy, don’t fight the current, swim in areas with a lifeguard, Read all the safety rules and signs on the beach, and don’t swim within 75 yards of where people are fishing.

Avoid Spending All the Time on the Beach

Beaches at Myrtle Beach are fun; they are sandy and beautiful, and you won’t know that you’ve spent hours relaxing at the beach. However, some people make the mistake of spending too much time at the beach. Instead of staying all the time at the beaches, you must explore other attractions that aren’t available in your city. After all, you’re here on a short trip and your kids will love to explore more interesting destinations.

Beware of Hurricanes

In the past, hurricanes have hit South Carolina and heavily affected the Grand Strand. Thus, it is important to remain updated about the weather conditions in Myrtle Beach. The Hurricane season is from June to November, and it’s advised to stay updated if the weather conditions get severe.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THE VIDEO

The resort features direct access to the beach along with an activity lawn, a multi-level pool, fitness center, a grab ‘n go marketplace with indoor and outdoor dining and a poolside bar. Indoor and outdoor activity centers are also located on the property.

Company executives and Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune attended Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The opening of Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort is a significant milestone for our city and its tourism industry,” Bethune said in a statement. “This resort represents not only a new destination for travelers seeking luxury accommodations and unparalleled amenities, but also a vital addition to our tourism landscape.”

7 Scenic Beach Towns In South Carolina That Are Great Alternatives To Myrtle Beach

Discover hidden coastal gems in South Carolina beyond Myrtle Beach, offering serene beauty and authentic charm for your next getaway.

  • Discover serene coastal gems in South Carolina beyond Myrtle Beach for a quieter, more enriching beach experience.
  • Kiawah Island offers upscale luxury, pristine beaches, and world-class golf for a laid-back coastal retreat.
  • From Pawleys Island to Port Royal, explore historic towns, unspoiled beaches, and tranquil escapes along the coast.

South Carolina's coastline extends far beyond the bustling expanse of Myrtle Beach , offering something different for those yearning for quieter shores and charm. Along the state's coast, you'll find hidden gems, promising discerning travelers an alternative haven to unwind and explore.

While Myrtle Beach boasts popularity among sun-seekers , lesser-known coastal towns in South Carolina each bear their own allure, from the dunes of Kiawah Island to the storied streets of Beaufort. These towns offer pristine beaches, historic downtowns, and boundless coastal adventures beckoning travelers to embrace a more nuanced and enriching beach experience beyond the clamor of Myrtle Beach.

10 Scenic South Carolina Road Trips That Should Be On Your Bucket List

7 kiawah island, pristine shores, rich biodiversity, and exclusive resorts provide a quieter, more upscale coastal experience.

Tucked along South Carolina's coastline, Kiawah Island stands as a serene alternative to the bustling crowds of Myrtle Beach. This private oasis has 10 miles of pristine, untouched beaches teeming with diverse wildlife. Visitors can partake in world-class golf at the island's renowned courses, kayak through waterways, or simply unwind amid the island's natural splendor.

Unlike the commercialized atmosphere of Myrtle Beach, Kiawah Island offers a luxurious yet laid-back retreat, where guests can immerse themselves in the beauty of the Lowcountry. With its exclusive resorts, upscale dining, and abundance of outdoor activities, Kiawah Island promises a truly rejuvenating coastal getaway.

6 Sullivan's Island

Boasting a rich history, a charming small-town atmosphere, and stunning views of the iconic sullivan's island lighthouse.

Unlike the commercialized feel of Myrtle Beach, this quaint island that is closer to Charleston, offers a more authentic and intimate beach experience along South Carolina's shores.

Visitors can soak up the sun at its family-friendly beaches, explore the island's historic sites like the iconic Sullivan's Island Lighthouse and Fort Moultrie, or enjoy fresh seafood and local cuisine at charming waterfront restaurants.

With its coastal cottages and picturesque views, Sullivan's Island invites travelers to unwind and savor the slower pace of coastal living, providing a unique respite from the crowds and development of Myrtle Beach.

5 Pawleys Island

A laid-back, low-key vibe characterized by centuries-old oak trees, quaint beachfront cottages, and historic hammock shops.

Located 70 miles south of Myrtle Beach and 25 miles north of Hilton Head, Pawleys Island offers a tranquil escape from the tourist crowds. Renowned for its laid-back vibe and unspoiled beaches, Pawleys Island exudes a timeless coastal charm that appeals to those seeking a more authentic and peaceful beach experience.

Pawleys Island invites visitors to stroll along its pristine shores, explore the charming Pawleys Island Historic District lined with 18th-century homes, or indulge in fresh seafood and local cuisine at quaint waterfront restaurants.

With its rich history, natural beauty, and slower pace of life, Pawleys Island provides a refreshing alternative for travelers looking to immerse themselves in a more relaxed characteristic of the Lowcountry, away from the crowds of more popular beach destinations.

4 Edisto Beach

Pristine marshlands, tranquil beaches, and historic estates provide a secluded and authentic coastal escape.

Situated along South Carolina's eastern coast, Edisto Beach offers a peaceful alternative to Myrtle Beach. Considered one of the few remaining family-oriented, gently developed beach towns on the eastern coastline of South Carolina, Edisto Beach promises a relaxing coastal retreat for travelers seeking a quieter escape.

With its laid-back vibe and natural beauty, Edisto Beach provides a unique coastal experience without the bustling development found at Myrtle Beach. Notably, there are no lifeguards along Edisto Beach, and it's truly an unspoiled stretch of South Carolina's coastline.

Antebellum architecture, rich Gullah culture, a vibrant arts scene, and historic landmarks

Steeped in a complex history rooted in the antebellum era, Beaufort offers a unique and enriching getaway away from the crowds of Myrtle Beach.

Filled with antebellum mansions, art galleries, and fine dining, Beaufort's downtown districts exude timeless Southern charm. Beyond its captivating architecture, the town is known for its excellent fishing ( comparable to that in Myrtle Beach ) and thriving golfing culture.

Visitors can explore Beaufort's storied past, admire its scenic waterfront, and savor the town's moderate climate with outdoor meals and park enjoyment year-round. By embracing both its storied past and vibrant present, Beaufort provides a refined coastal experience far from the bustle of more popular beach destinations.

10 Truly Underrated Towns In South Carolina That Deserve To Be Explored

2 isle of palms, pristine sandy beaches, complemented by upscale amenities, championship golf courses, and proximity to the cape romain national wildlife refuge.

The Isle of Palms boasts pristine beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. At just 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, this barrier island is known for its clean waters, abundant natural wildlife, and world-class resorts, spas, golf courses, and dining.

Visitors can soak up the sun on the island's family-friendly beaches, tee off at championship golf courses, or explore the natural beauty of nearby barrier islands. The Shem Creek Boardwalk, a popular dining and drinking district, also offers panoramic views of the marsh and Charleston Harbor.

Travelers might even spot local resident Bill Murray taking in the island's upscale, yet laid-back atmosphere. Located just 12 miles from Charleston and 90 miles from Savannah, Isle of Palms provides a serene coastal escape within easy reach of major cities.

1 Port Royal

Picturesque coastal charm, steeped in history as one of the oldest settlements in the new world.

The town of Port Royal, located south of Beaufort and just north of Parris Island, offers a serene alternative to the busier coastal destinations of South Carolina. Part of the greater Hilton Head Island-Bluffton area, Port Royal is one of the most underrated towns in America, featuring a slightly slower pace than its popular neighbors Beaufort and Charleston.

While the town itself is relatively small, it boasts plenty of natural and cultural attractions for visitors to explore, including the Cypress Wetlands , a gorgeous coastal environment teeming with diverse birdlife, as well as Sands Beach, where amateur beachcombers can hunt for shark's teeth and other treasures along the lengthy wooden pier.
