Planning a Trip? Don’t Forget to Buy Travel Insurance

Flexible, affordable, travel insurance should always be on your itinerary .

Planning a grand tour to Europe or a tropical vacation in paradise? Or is this the year that you do that round-the-world adventure that you’ve always dreamed about? If you’ll soon be hopping on a plane or embarking on a cruise down an exotic coast, congratulations. But, before you go, don’t forget to buy travel insurance .

Stuff happens in life: job loss, an unexpected illness, a death in the family, an international crisis. An unforeseen event may force you to cancel a trip or, while away, you may need to go see a doctor. Don’t go uninsured!

Before you travel, ask a AAA travel agent about health insurance for international travel.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is temporary insurance that you buy to protect yourself for the duration of your trip. It can include coverage if you have to cancel a nonrefundable plane ticket or cover the cost of prepaid hotel stays and tours; reimburse you for lost or stolen possessions; or pay for hospital stays if you get injured or sick abroad.

Can you obtain travel insurance through AAA?

Yes, AAA is a partner with Allianz , which provides four coverage options. All the options include insurance against trip cancellation or interruption, medical coverage (including for preexisting conditions), baggage loss and damage, emergency transportation and travel delays.

Tip: AAA members and non-members can obtain travel insurance through AAA for the same cost. However, AAA members will receive the added benefit on three of the available plans of receiving $100 if a cruise ship misses a port of call appearing on the original itinerary, up to a total benefit of $300.

Who needs travel insurance?

Anyone investing a significant amount of money in travel plans should consider travel insurance. This applies both to vacations within the United States and international travel. If your trip costs thousands of dollars, it is a good idea to get trip protection that will refund you for any tickets if you have to cancel your vacation or if the trip is interrupted. Also, anyone who is traveling to outside the U.S. should have emergency medical/dental coverage. At the least, you should review your personal medical coverage carefully to determine if you are covered while abroad.

What are the main types of travel insurance?

Travel insurance normally is sold as a bundled product that provides medical coverage and trip protection. However, you can usually select from a menu of options, which includes or excludes certain coverage, or adjusts the coverage limits. Travel insurance has three major types:

Typically your regular health insurance will not cover injuries or accidents abroad, and that's why it is important to obtain travel insurance.

1.     Medical/Dental Coverage

Emergency medical/dental will cover you for illness or injury, as well as any medications that you might require. Say, for example, you break your leg or get ill while in a foreign country. In most cases, your normal medical insurance won’t cover you for hospital stays or doctor’s visits in another country. Just as in the United States, a protracted stay in a foreign hospital can bankrupt you. So, you need to make sure you have medical insurance for everyone in your family while you are away.

Do I need medical/dental insurance if I am taking a cruise?

Yes, most cruise ships have their own medical staff on board; however, if you do seek treatment from the on-ship clinic, you will be billed separately. Typically, your regular medical insurance provider will not cover those claims, but travel insurance can reimburse you.

Tip: Emergency medical coverage will typically not pay claims if you are injured because of reckless behavior or you take unnecessary risk. Travel insurance also may not cover injuries from certain activities, such as scuba diving.

What if I have a preexisting condition?

In many cases, travel insurance will cover a preexisting condition if that condition is under control at the time of the trip. So, in other words, if you have been treated for a certain condition and it is stable when you take out the policy, that condition will tend to be covered.

Will travel insurance cover COVID?

That depends, some insurance policies will cover medical expenses caused by COVID-19 and some will not. Unfortunately, while COVID restrictions have eased in most countries, COVID itself has not disappeared, so it is important to obtain a policy that will cover COVID.

A photo illustration dominated by two nonrefundable airline tickets to illustrate the importance of travel insurance. Trip cancellation/interruption will cover the expense of pre-booked, nonrefundable tickets.

2.     Trip cancellation/interruption

This is a standard part of any travel insurance policy. Trip cancellation insurance kicks in when you buy the policy, and will reimburse you for any bookings you have to cancel before you leave, such as plane tickets, cruise bookings, tours, hotel stays, etc. Meanwhile, trip interruption coverage begins when the trip begins, and will cover the costs of unused pre-booked tickets, stays or tours should you need to end the vacation early. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance are usually sold together.

Tip: Trip cancellation and interruption insurance will pay a claim only for a covered reason to cancel or end a vacation early. For example, most policies will cover an international incident, such as severe weather, the death of a family member or if you are too sick to travel. If you simply no longer want to go, however, that wouldn’t normally be covered. However, it is often possible to upgrade this coverage to allow you to “cancel a trip for any reason.”

3.     Baggage loss/damage or delay

Travel insurance will provide coverage for the loss, theft or damage to your baggage and personal items, such as laptops, cell phones, clothes, etc. You can also get compensated if your baggage is delayed, so you can purchase essential items, such as clothing and toiletries.

Tip: Consider leaving expensive jewelry and electronics at home or explore getting specialized insurance for jewelry or high-end items. While travel insurance will cover for loss, damage and theft, normally the insurance will only reimburse you for a fixed amount for each item, such as $500 maximum per item up to a total loss of $2,000.

A model plan is pictured on top of two passports to illustrate the importance of travel insurance.

Other types of travel coverage

Travel insurance also can cover a number of other items, such as:

  • Emergency transportation to a hospital in the event of an illness or injury
  • Travel delays to cover additional travel and the lost prepaid expenses if your trip is delayed
  • Change fee coverage to reimburse you for any fee that you are charged for changing an airline or rail ticket
  • Rental car loss to cover the cost if your rental car is stolen or damaged in a covered accident
  • Sports equipment coverage to cover the cost of any lost, damaged or stolen fishing and sports equipment

What if I am planning to travel all year?

If you’re planning several trips this year or going away for a long time, you might consider an annual travel insurance policy. While most travel insurance policies are short duration, an annual policy will cover you for the entire year regardless of what country you are traveling to.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance is broadly affordable, with a robust policy costing on average about 5% to 12% of the total cost of the trip. The cost will vary depending on the age of the traveler, the cost of the trip and the types of coverage that you choose. Normally, the cost is not affected by the destination or your prior medical claims history.

Before you go on your dream vacation this year, it would be wise to seriously consider getting travel insurance to protect yourself and your family in case of the unexpected. Call a AAA travel agent now to book your vacation and buy travel insurance.

How AAA Members Can Save Big Money When Traveling

I f you're a frequent traveler, you're no stranger to all the ways you can save money so you can travel more often. From travel credit card perks to airfare booking strategies , you've probably got it all figured out. However, you might be surprised when we say that if you're not a AAA (American Automobile Association) member, you might be missing out on amazing deals.

AAA is a non-profit organization -- technically a federation of motor clubs -- that is dedicated to enhancing its members' travel experiences throughout the U.S.A. It offers a range of benefits that can significantly contribute to cost savings for your trips while also providing peace of mind while on the road.

Perks range from 24/7 roadside assistance to exclusive discounts on car rentals and hotel stays. However, you won't just get perks for road trips -- AAA will also take to the skies with you with deals on airfare and travel abroad with all-inclusive trips to Mexico , the Caribbean , and beyond.

AAA 'S Membership Tiers Offer Great Value For Travelers

Since it was established in 1902, AAA has reliably served travelers across the United States. Now, with a century of experience, it has become a trusted organization best known for its comprehensive travel services.

AAA offers three main membership levels: Classic, Plus, and Premier, all with incredible perks. The Classic membership is the basic tier, but there's nothing simple about it. This tier still provides all the essential services, such as roadside assistance, $60 dollars toward locksmith services, and access to travel resources. However, it also includes discounts on rental cars, identity theft protection, and expedited passport and travel visa services.

The second-tier Plus membership includes all of that but simply in greater amounts. For example, you get 100 miles of towing (whereas Classic provides 7), emergency fuel delivery that is completely free (including the fuel), along with 50% off European travel guides.

The Premier membership offers the highest level of coverage and benefits and includes everything from the Plus and Classic tiers with even greater discounts. Premier members can expect to receive amazing extras like one-day free car rentals and concierge services for those bougie budget-conscious travelers.

Membership costs will vary depending on your zip code and the level chosen. For example, the Classic tier in California costs around $36 per year but in neighboring Arizona goes up to $65. No matter the cost, considering the potential savings and benefits, the value received should make it worth your while.

Get Great Discounts On Travel With AAA

Through its extensive network of partnerships, AAA members can save a trunkload of money. As a member, you will gain access to a wide range of discounted travel options, including all-inclusive resort or cruise packages or piecemeal -- if you like to book things separately -- hotel accommodations, car rentals, and airfare.

For example, when booking hotel accommodations, AAA members often receive discounted rates that can range from 5 to 10% off the regular prices for hotels chains like Hilton, Best Western, and MGM. This means significant savings on popular hotels and resorts located both in the U.S. and worldwide. You'll even earn loyalty points when you book through AAA , which can be applied towards your next membership renewal.

Similarly, when renting a car, AAA members can benefit from discounted rates (up to 35% on electric vehicles ), free upgrades, and additional perks like fuel discounts with their main partner Hertz or budget car rental companies like Thrifty and Dollar. AAA will even waive the additional driver and young renters fees if you're between the ages of 20 to 24.

AAA Offers Members Expert Travel Planning Support

While all the roadside assistance is great for long road trips, what really makes the organization stand out is that it's actually the largest travel agency in the U.S. Their advisors are available to chat with you in-person or virtually. AAA travel agents won't just help you plan an amazing trip but they can also find you the best deals through their exclusive discounts.

If you're thinking about planning a road trip , AAA also offers their own travel app called TripTik. This is an interactive road trip planning tool that can help you plan out stops along your route for gas and rest stops, restaurants, hotels, and attractions. If you need some inspiration, the app also has 600 pre-planned scenic drives including recommended stops.

For those who enjoy the analog versions of things, AAA is one of the few organizations that still offer paper maps to its members for free. However, if you prefer digital, they haven't forgotten you. You can grab AAA's digital TourBooks which provide access to information about destinations across North America and the Caribbean.

Get Everything You Need To Travel In One Place

Now that you know where you want to go, you just have to get there. Luckily, AAA offices can be your one-stop-shop for (almost) all your official documents.

If you know you have air travel planned soon, and you don't have a passport or need to renew it quickly and/or you need a travel visa, head to your nearest AAA office instead of the post office or passport office. With AAA , you can take your passport photos (at a discount for AAA members) and get your passport and visa application expedited through AAA 's connections with RushMyPassport.

If you're planning to drive while abroad, you may also want to consider grabbing an International Driving Permit (IDP). Since a U.S. Driver's License is not accepted in all countries, an IDP is a surefire way to avoid issues. An IDP can also reduce issues with language barriers and it may be required to rent a car. The best part is that with AAA you can get an IDP the same day you apply for only $20, plus additional (but still discounted) fees for the passport photos required for the document.

Lastly, to be prepared for any eventuality that may occur on your trip, you can also purchase automotive and travel insurance through AAA . They partner with Allianz Global Assistance so members can take advantage of insurance policies that cover trip cancellation, trip interruption, and emergency medical coverage.

HAVING A THOROUGH DISCUSSION WITH YOUR INSURANCE AGENT IS A MUST FOR GETTING THE PROPER COVERAGE AT THE RIGHT PRICE

April 29, 2024 | 3 min read.

do i have travel insurance with aaa

If you haven’t shopped around for auto insurance lately, you could be paying for a policy that doesn’t properly protect you—or spending more than you should. Talking with your insurance agent could remedy those situations. Here are 10 questions your insurance agent will likely ask when you have that conversation.

  • What’s the make, model, year and Vehicle Information Number (VIN) of the vehicle?
  • How many miles are on the vehicle?
  • Does the vehicle have any safety features or anti-theft devices?
  • What’s the number, age and occupation of drivers in the household?
  • What’s the driving history of each driver, including any auto accidents and moving violations?
  • About how many miles annually will the vehicle be driven? (If you don’t drive many miles, you may qualify for a low-mileage discount.)
  • If any teen drivers will be driving the vehicle, have they completed instruction through a defensive driving school? Also, do they earn good grades in school? (Affirmative answers to those questions could qualify them for discounts.) Additionally, note if you have a driver who is away at college without a car, which could result in more savings.
  • How will you use the vehicle (whether for strictly personal use or a mix of personal and business use)?
  • Where do you live, and where will the vehicle be kept (for example, in a garage, in a driveway or on the street)?
  •   How much liability coverage are you looking for, and how high or low of a deductible do you want?

Six Travel Mistakes to Avoid

No travel medical insurance? Unnecessary luggage and hotel fees? Here are the biggest travel mistakes people make and how you can avoid them.

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

A child sits on his suitcase at the airport looking up at the departures board.

Even the most seasoned tourists can make travel mistakes when planning a vacation. Some blunders can be minor infractions, but others can cost travelers a lot of money and heartache.

But there are steps you can take to avoid travel mistakes. Here are six slip ups that travelers may make this year, plus tips on how to avoid them.

1. Overlooking travel medical insurance

Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and founder of the nonprofit Elliott Advocacy , says many people don’t consider purchasing travel medical insurance . “People often think nothing bad will happen before or on their vacation, but then they get injured overseas and need to go to the hospital, and the next thing they’re looking at is a $10,000 hospital bill.” Indeed, nearly one in four Americans report they’ve experienced a medical issue while traveling abroad, according to a 2023 survey sponsored by GeoBlue, an international health insurance company.

Profit and prosper with the best of expert advice - straight to your e-mail.

Unfortunately, most U.S. healthcare plans — including employer group plans, Medicare and Affordable Care Act plans — offer limited or no medical coverage outside the U.S.

How to avoid: One solution is to purchase a travel medical insurance policy, a type of insurance that provides coverage for a range of medical emergencies while traveling abroad, from minor injuries to major events like heart attacks and strokes, to medical evacuation and emergency transport in the case of severe emergencies.

The average travel medical insurance plan costs $89, according to Squaremouth , a travel insurance comparison website. Squaremouth advises international travelers to obtain a policy that provides a minimum of $50,000 in emergency medical coverage and at least $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

Note: Some travel insurance policies include emergency medical coverage and medical evacuation coverage up to certain limits.

2. Getting hit with unnecessary luggage fees

You may have heard that a number of airlines — including American Airlines , Delta , and JetBlue Airways — recently raised their prices for checked bags. But one thing a lot of travelers aren’t aware of, Elliott says, is that some are now charging customers more if they check a bag at the airport versus paying to check a bag in advance. For instance, JetBlue customers flying within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada can save up to $20 on their first two checked bags ($10 savings per bag) when they add them to their flight reservation at least 24 hours before departure.

How to avoid: Make sure to pay ahead of time for any bags that you plan to check.

3. Incurring hidden hotel fees

Wi-Fi fees, early check-in fees, gym fees—hotels today charge guests no shortage of extra fees and surcharges . It’s a widespread problem: In an April 2023 survey by Consumer Reports , nearly four out of 10 (37%) U.S. adults said they had experienced a hidden or unexpected hotel fee in the previous two years.

How to avoid: Many hotels offer to reduce or, in some cases, waive certain fees to guests who join their loyalty program, which is free in most cases. Also, sometimes simply asking an employee at check-in to waive certain fees could do the trick.

4. Not utilizing a key search feature on Airbnb

Like hotels, Airbnb rental property owners often tack on extra fees, such as cleaning fees, fees for additional guests beyond a certain number, and service fees. These additional costs can add hundreds of dollars to your bill.

How to avoid: Elliott praised Airbnb for introducing a feature in December 2022 that allows guests to view a stay’s total costs, before taxes, when searching for rental properties. But he says there’s a caveat: “If you’re in the U.S., you need to change a setting in order to see the full rate when you search for rentals.”

To enable the feature, click the slider on the upper right of the search page that says, “Display total before taxes.”

5. Paying full price for a rental car

First, the good news: “The rental vehicle shortage has improved,” Elliott says. That’s resulted in a stabilization of rates, with rental car prices recently averaging $42 a day, up only 3% from last year, according to a report from the travel search company Hopper. The bad news? Renting a car is still more expensive than it was before the pandemic, especially for travelers who pay full freight.

How to avoid: There are several ways you can avoid paying full price. Big-box stores such as Costco , BJ’s and Sam’s Club provide their members discounts on certain rental cars. AARP and AAA also offer their members discounted rates. ( AARP members save up to 30% on base rates at Avis and Budget Rent A Car; AAA members save up to 20% on Hertz rentals). In addition, a number of credit card companies offer certain cardholders rental car discounts when they book a vehicle from specific rental car companies.

You may also be able to nab a lower rate by prepaying when you book a reservation. And, some rental car companies offer limited-mileage plans at a lower cost, which could be a good option if you’re planning to take just a short trip.

Tip: See if your credit card offers rental car insurance before you pay for insurance from a rental car company.

6. Encountering sky-high hotel rates because of Taylor Swift’s European tour

When Taylor Swift performs a concert, sometimes tens of thousands of out-of-town fans descend on the city, causing hotel prices to spike. Consider: the median rate for a standard hotel room during an Eras Tour date in Europe this year is projected to jump by 44%, with average hotel room prices in Warsaw surging a staggering 154% during her tour date there, according to a recent study by Lighthouse , a travel and hospitality research company.

How to avoid: The simplest approach for Europe-bound travelers in 2024, Elliott says, is to avoid traveling to a destination during a Taylor Swift tour date in that city. “When Taylor Swift comes to town all of the hotels sell out, and it becomes very difficult to find a reasonably priced hotel,” he says.

Travel insurance can be a worthwhile investment, especially if you’re worried about unexpected costs during your trip. There are a ton of different travel insurance companies out there, so finding one that suits your needs can be a struggle. That’s why we’ve done the work for you.

Let’s take a look at travel insurance provider Faye to see what type of plans the company offers, the coverage levels you can expect and whether Faye travel insurance is right for you.

About Faye travel insurance

Faye is the brand name for customizable travel protection plans offered by a company called Zenner Inc. Its website notes that it specializes in quick reimbursements, which can be a big draw for travelers. Policies issued by Faye are underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company.

Faye insurance plans

Unlike many other travel insurance companies , Faye offers only one plan.

To find out what types of coverage Faye travel insurance plans include, we generated a quote for a 44-year-old woman from Arizona who was traveling to Italy for two weeks. Her total trip cost came in at $2,000.

Here’s what Faye provides:

This plan costs 7.03% of the overall trip cost, which is typical according to NerdWallet's analysis .

The plan is comprehensive and includes coverage you don’t typically see, such as reimbursement for lost credit cards and a payment for being inconvenienced.

Faye also offers a number of customizations; there are different add-ons from which to choose, all of which vary in price. More on your options in the next section.

These include:

Bad weather, including hurricanes, if the policy was purchased after the storm was named.

Intentionally self-inflicted injuries or suicide.

Expenses incurred while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

High-risk sports for which you are paid.

Psychological disorders, unless you’re hospitalized.

War and acts of war.

Illegal acts.

Piloting or learning to pilot or acting as crew of an aircraft.

How to choose a Faye plan online

Purchasing a Faye travel insurance plan online is simple. You’ll first want to head to the company’s website to generate a quote.

You’ll need to input information like your age, where you live, where you’re going and how long you’re going to be away. Once you’ve got that all entered in, you’ll be taken to the results page.

Which Faye plan is best for me?

Although Faye has just one base plan available for purchase, it has plenty of different add-ons from which to choose. Faye sorts its bundles and add-ons according to the trip you’re taking, so you may see your bundled offer vary from time to time.

For tentative plans . Choosing to add on a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy can provide peace of mind if your travel plans aren’t solid. With the ability to get up to 75% of your money back, you’ll just want to make sure you’re canceling at least 48 hours in advance.

For pet owners . Not many travel insurance companies include coverage for your pets , especially not when it comes to vet bills. With a low overall cost, this add-on can make a huge difference if you end up delayed on your return.

For those wanting to customize everything . Faye’s base plan allows customers to create tons of different customizations according to their travel needs. Even though it’s costly, it makes up for it with wholly comprehensive coverage.

Faye’s travel insurance offerings may suit your needs, but before purchasing a plan, take a look in your wallet. Many different travel credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance , which can include benefits such as trip cancellation reimbursement, rental car insurance and more.

Very polite and helpful. Great customer service. I would recommend this office. They do take a little long in returning calls though.

Let me just tell you how efficient and outstanding the customer service this location has. I have been to other locations and this one by far has always treated me with exceptional service. They are FAST for one, greet you with a friendly, inviting smile and have the best energy, from the reception to all of the staff. I had DMV services done and I really just felt like family. During the holiday's everyone knows how stressful it can be. PRESTON made sure he took care of me with love and grace. Had it been my second visit. I had forgotten important documents my first time coming and had to come back and he remembered me. I thought that was very thoughtful. The whole staff worked diligently as a team, answered each others questions with laughter and smiles and they all just worked really well together. I loved seeing that. Well done AAA! I highly recommend this location, other locations such as Mission Valley I have waited at least an hour to be seen and the customer service wasn't ever anything as close to this. Make that drive.

I was comparing prices with my current car insurance (Wawanesa) to AAA. I found that AAA charges about $65 more than what I am paying for, when compared to my same exact policy. I've been receiving numerous telephone calls and the sales rep keeps on cutting me off, when I try to explain that they are just too much. As I tried to explain how I came to this findings, he kept cutting me off again. I told him to let me talk and stop interrupting me, then he hung up the phone. A few seconds later AAA calls back again. Stop with your calls, I'm not interested, cause you're car insurance policy is too much. Your calls are harassing and your representatives are very rude on the phone. This is really not a professional company. Please train your employees on customer service. I didn't even want to give you 1 star, it should be 0 stars.

I have been to this location 2x now. The first time I was getting a temp handicap placard since I was having knee surgery and wouldn't be able to walk well for a while. I checked in and an older lady with horrible makeup on asked me what I was there for and I told her, to which she proceeded to give me her opinion on how I was too young to need a handicap placard. I then told her I was having knee surgery and she said oh you'll be fine.. First off, its non of her business as to why I need a placard and second she needs to keep her opinion to herself! The 2nd time I came for a notary and lady up front said there were 5 people ahead of me, then 30 min went by and still 5 people ahead of me! Really!? how slow can they be? Finally left and went two shops down to ups store and had it done in minutes. This locations is very slow and take longer than most AAA locations. I will not go back to this location. The staff here leaves alot to be desired.

I'm Not really recommend it AAA... they give you one Quote then next month raise the price like 200 with No reason then if you want to cancel the policy they will charge you $ 500 Five Hundred dollars .. Im NOT REALLY RECOMMEND IT "" NO ""

I'd give them a 0 start if I could. I am a member, called AAA to tow my car home because It does not work. Lady named Ashley employee number H094 said" i don't care if the car stops at Walmart or a store..." they only tow to repair shops, which is a lie because I've had my car towed by them to my house before. was very disrespectful kept putting me on hold. As a member she did not help, because of her poor service I will not be using AAA anymore

Photo of David R.

Liars. We're told 20% return on premiums. Well it isn't. It's 20% since March. The reason for this lie is to get more premiums written to those who think, "well they should be honest. Look what they are doing." Fake. Mine, with a 2000$ premium on a brand new truck and Cadillac was 50$. Liars!!!

Tired of searching online for 'cheap+flights' that add on unnecessary costs? Annoyed at those stupid Priceline commercials? Well do I have a solution for you! Be it a trip to Hawaii as we planned last year, a quick getaway to Vegas, our cruise, or now a trip to London & Paris (coming this April!), my boyfriend & I have always found that AAA has the cheapest prices compared to if I book things myself, as well as helping you find the right flight at the right time. Their hours are from 9-5, but they are glad to help you via email, phone, or appointments. I've always wondered how great it would be to have my own personal concierge for planning my trips, and now I'm proud to say that "heck yes!" I finally found a solution. Kim and Liliana take the time to make sure we plan without any stress, and that ALL things are taken care of. I don't have AAA myself, but if you travel with someone who does have it (*ahem*) you'd save yourself the headache of planning & paying out of your umm... behind. In addition, they throw in free stuff! We got a few tours for free, my travel insurance at a great price, as well as help with money conversions etc. Suck it, Expedia.

I can't say enough about the services and the customer service at this place! The yearly fee is so worth all the benefits! Apart from the obvious benefits of getting someone out to help you asap on your car problems, the membership allows access to DMV services that typically take half a day to complete standing in line! No appointment is needed and most transactions take no more than 30-45 minutes! They also have insurance and travel planning services and resources. I booked a trip to Hawaii once through the membership and found a great package and price!
