How Judas Priest Moved on With a New Singer on ‘Jugulator’

In some parts of the world, the number 13 is considered lucky; in others, it’s the exact opposite. Judas Priest ’s 13th album, Jugulator , was released on Oct. 16, 1997, and represented a little bit of both for the band's new singer, Tim "Ripper" Owens.

Owens fronted a Priest tribute band, and his luck had changed for the better the previous year, when he was hired by the British icons in the aftermath of longtime singer Rob Halford ’s departure in 1992. “It was a crazy experience,” the Ohio-born Owens tells UCR. “I didn’t plan on it, I didn’t send them anything, then all of a sudden you get the call. They were the only band on my bedroom wall when I was a kid.”

(As luck would have it, the rags-to-riches fairy tale caught the attention of Hollywood, which made 2001 movie Rock Star based on Owens' story. As luck would also have it, the band eventually distanced itself from the film as it veered away from its original inspiration.)

Judas Priest immediately put Owens to work, recording his vocals in the English studio belonging to former Jethro Tull drummer Barriemore Barlow before moving elsewhere. “There wasn’t much written,” Owens says. “‘Burn in Hell’ and ‘Death Row’ were the early ones I recorded. They just made it a band feel right away.”

He describes his studio memories as “great,” even though he went through a “hard time” as Jugulator came together. “I wanted to do good, that was my main concern," Owens recalls. "I didn’t have to try and sound like Rob. Some people will say I kinda did, but most fans didn’t. It made it easier on me that I sang like myself.”

Still, the repetitive work was aggravating. “I remember being frustrated and punching the wall," Owens says. "There wasn’t Pro Tools, you weren’t changing the pitch – you better get it right. We can’t Auto-Tune it.”

Pressure also came from the band's chief songwriter, guitarist Glenn Tipton. “Glenn was experiencing my voice, and he was like a kid in a candy store," Owens says. "He was experimenting. He would say, ‘Anything I ask you to sing, you’re gonna sing. If I want to you sing a death-metal growl, you will. If I want you to sing like a woman, you will.’ The process went great. Barriemore Barlow’s studio was an all-new experience of instant coffee, cups of tea and biscuits. Instant coffee’s not a big thing in America – I go back [home] and I tell people, ‘Man, I love instant coffee!’ They’re like, ‘What?’”

Another good omen came in the form of a Grammy nomination for “Bullet Train” after Jugulator ’s release. On the other side of the balance, the follow-up to 1990’s Painkiller didn’t receive the universal embrace that everyone was hoping for. “People forget that each Priest album has been different,” Owens notes. “If Rob had made that record, it would have been taken differently: 'That’s a natural progression.’

“I think it’s a fantastic record," Owens says. "I think ‘Cathedral Spires’ is in the Top 20 Judas Priest songs of all time. To me it’s in the Top 10. I think 'Bullet Train' getting nominated for a Grammy is overlooked.”

He still performs “Bullet Train,” “Cathedral Spires,” “Death Row,” “Dead Meat” and “Blood Stained” and occasionally receives requests to play the entire album onstage with his solo band. No matter what kind of luck was in store for them, timing was against them, Owens insists.

“I joined Judas Priest at probably the worst time for heavy metal,” he notes. “ Iron Maiden , AC/DC , no one was really doing anything. Anthrax , Testament couldn’t even buy a show. It made it harder."

Owens would go on to record a second album, 2001’s Demolition , with Judas Priest, and two live albums were releeased before Halford returned to the band in 2003. Despite rumors to the contrary, Owens says there were never any hard feelings – and even suggests luck played a role once again, particularly since he’d just recorded with Iced Earth and was soon invited to join  that band.

“I don’t miss saying, ‘I’m in Judas Priest.’ I miss being around the guys, the recording process, the dinners, the beer," Owens says. "I was treated very fair all the way through. I was pretty happy when the time came. I remember driving back from recording Iced Earth vocals and going, ‘I wish Judas Priest would fire me, because I’ll never quit!’”

His career since then has included work with Yngwie Malmsteen , Charred Walls of the Damned, Hail! and his own band, Beyond Fear. In 2020, he was announced as the lead singer of K.K.'s Priest alongside former Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing .

“It had to happen for me to move on and do other things,” Owens notes. “It had to happen for the band, and it had to happen for Rob. I felt like all of us benefited from that happening."

Jugulator could be seen as mixed twists of fate for Owens, but he also calls it one of the best projects he's ever been involved with. Still, he says, “I think my favorite is my Beyond Fear CD, because I wrote the music. But one of my favorite songs of all time is ‘Blood Stained’ because it has every kind of vocals there is on it. ‘Cathedral Spires’ is always going to be of the tops in my catalog. Everything I do in my life is because of joining Judas Priest and making that record. I say, ‘Judas Priest was my college.’

"I think it was the perfect record for that time," he concludes. "I think it’s a continuation of Painkiller that showed a little more aggression. The two records I did with them, I would change absolutely nothing.”

Judas Priest 1984 to 2024 Set List Comparison: 40 Years of Steel

"No holograms, no troupes of dancers, just a giant light-up trident descending from the ceiling": Judas Priest keep it simple on a triumphant first night of the Invincible Shield tour

A show 160 years in the making: judas priest, saxon and uriah heap take to the stage in glasgow.

Judas Priest onstage in Glasgow

There are only two kinds of music that matter tonight: Heavy and Metal. Three British bands, with a total of 160 years on the clock between them, have packed out the 12,000-seater OVO Hydro. Here, the chaos of the world is kept outside, this giant concrete and glass colosseum on the banks of the Clyde surrounded by an invisible forcefield. Or maybe an invincible shield.

This is the first night of the world tour in support of Judas Priest ’s 19th album, Invincible Shield (yeah, we went there). It’s a screaming demon of a record that keeps up the hot streak which began with 2014’s rocket-fuelled Redeemer Of Souls and continued through 2018’s pulverising Firepower . Do Priest – 55 years and counting in the game themselves – have the energy to pull it off? Oh yes, they definitely do.

We’ll get to that, but first the undercard. Openers Uriah Heep have been doing this as long as Priest, doughty footsoldiers on heavy metal’s long and unending route march. They rattle through a set so short it’s a wonder they bothered to pull themselves away from the telly, but Gypsy and Easy Livin’ sound as exhilarating now as they did when double denim and luxuriant moustaches were all the rage first time around.

Saxon are the young bucks on tonight’s bill by comparison, even if Biff Byford increasingly resembles an old oak, topped with silver and more rooted to the spot than he used to be. We get four songs from their latest album, Hell, Fire And Damnation , which is a touch on the generous side (though There’s Something In Roswell is way better than its crackpot title suggests). But everyone’s here for the classics, and they know it: Motorcycle Man , And The Bands Played On , Dallas 1pm , Wheels Of Steel and Princess Of The Night, still the greatest song about a steam train ever written. “This is what it’s fucking all about,” booms Biff before a euphoric Denim And Leather . He’s not wrong.

There’s a reason Priest called their new album what they did, given the rough time of it they’ve had in the last few years. Talismanic guitarist Glenn Tipton’s Parkinson’s diagnosis and subsequent retirement, recent-ish recruit Richie Faulkner’s near-fatal onstage heart attack , Rob Halford’s recovery from prostate cancer – if there is a God, it looks like he’s not much of a Judas Priest fan. Yet here they are, leather-clad and studded up, striding onto the OVO stage to a fanfare worthy of a Queen (or at least Queen), as youthful in spirit, if not in body, as they‘ve ever been.

Invincible Shield is a top-tier Priest album, and one that doesn’t sound too far away from the ones they used to make, so few here begrudge them opening with the adrenalised assault of recent single Panic Attack . Even those who have resolutely refused to listen to anything after Painkiller will be pacified by Rapid Fire , despatched in quick succession. Halford manages to lose his way a little in the tongue-tangling wordplay – come on, he’s only been singing it for 44 years – but at least he nails ‘desolisating’, which is the important bit. When exactly did heavy metal bands stop making up their own words anyway?

Priest haven’t played UK arenas for decades, and it’s easy to forget just how boomingly heavy they sound. Not least bassist Ian Hill, the rock on which Priest have been built for the last 50-odd years. Does it matter that his great thwacking bass is the loudest thing in the mix? No, it does not. There’s some milksop with an acoustic guitar playing across town if it’s too loud for you.

Halford himself is obscenely sprightly tonight, which is to say way more agile than any 72-year old wrapped in a layer of leather, rivet-work and, sporadically, a spangly silver coat has a right to be. Vocally, he‘s on fire – the high notes are hit precisely when they should be, which, in the case of Screaming For Vengeance , is pretty much from start to finish. He even tosses in what sounds like a death growl during the immortal Metal Gods .

By modern standards, the stage set is relatively restrained yet undeniably effective. Banks of giant screens at the back of the stage project a retina-roasting array of colours and images – a dirty and scuffed Union Jack during Breaking The Law , footage from the old silent horror movie Nosferatu during Love Bites , vintage footage of the absent Tipton during a stellar Victim Of Changes , his hair flowing and his red patent leather strides positively creaking with intent. Beyond that, there’s not much - no second stage, no holograms, no troupes of dancers, just a giant light-up trident that periodically descends from the ceiling. But sometimes a giant light-up trident is all you need.

The setlist is as perfectly balanced as can be expected from a band with as deep a catalogue as Priest. There are new songs ( Lightning Strike , Panic Attack , Trial By Fire and Invincible Shield itself all get a run out, the first ever for the latter three). There are old songs ( You Got Another Thing Coming , Turbo , Green Manalishi ). There are even a couple of deep-ish cuts in the form of Saints In Hell and Love Bites .

The wrap it up, naturally, with a triumphant Hell Bent For Leather – sung by Halford on his Harley, of course – and Livin’ After Midnight . “We hit Glasgow about 1am,”  Rob sings on the latter – optimistic, maybe, but 12,000-odd people are right there partying with him in their heads. “We’ll be back,” he says when it’s finished. Time may march on, but only a fool would bet against that.

Judas Priest's Invincible Shield tour continues at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Wednesday evening (March 13). For full dates and tickets, visit the Judas Priest website .

Rob Halford appears on the cover of the new issue of Metal Hammer (with some kittens), while Halford and Richie Faulkner are interviewed about the making of Invincible Shield in the new issue of Classic Rock .

KK'S PRIEST 's first-ever U.S. headlining tour, which features support from L.A. GUNS and BURNING WITCHES , kicked off on March 7 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The tour will be the first of at least a two-leg USA run of shows, planned to continue later in 2024.

KK'S PRIEST 's sophomore album, "The Sinner Rides Again" , came out in September 2023 via the Austrian label Napalm Records .

KK'S PRIEST made its live debut on July 6, 2023 at Downing's KK's Steel Mill in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom.

KK'S PRIEST kicked off a five-date "Priests, Killers & Witches" U.K. tour on October 7, 2023 at O2 Institute in Birmingham.

K.K. formed KK'S PRIEST after JUDAS PRIEST turned down his offer to rejoin the band for their 50th-anniversary tour. It followed a couple of celebrated stage appearances, first with former MANOWAR guitarist Ross The Boss in the summer of 2019, then with a one-off lineup that included former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson and former PRIEST drummer Les Binks later that year.

KK'S PRIEST released its debut album, "Sermons Of The Sinner" , in October 2021 via Explorer1 Music Group / EX1 Records .

Downing spent four months writing and recording "Sermons Of The Sinner" and, along with new ideas, he even resurrected a few archived riffs from the 1980s.

Downing was reunited with JUDAS PRIEST for a performance at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony in November 2022 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

PRIEST received the Musical Excellence Award at the event, which honored Eminem , Dolly Parton , DURAN DURAN , Lionel Richie , Pat Benatar , EURYTHMICS and Carly Simon in the Performers category.

Downing left PRIEST in 2011 amid claims of band conflict, shoddy management and declining quality of performance. He was replaced by Richie Faulkner , nearly three decades his junior.

In 2019, Downing said that he reached out to JUDAS PRIEST about taking part in the band's 50th-anniversary tour but that their response was that they were not interested in including him in the celebrations.

In 2018, Downing revealed that he sent two resignation letters to his bandmates when he decided to quit JUDAS PRIEST . The first was described as "a graceful exit note, implying a smooth retirement from music," while the second was "angrier, laying out all of his frustrations with specific parties."

Downing later said that he believed the second letter was "a key reason" he wasn't invited to rejoin PRIEST after Glenn Tipton 's decision to retire from touring.

Owens joined PRIEST in 1996 and recorded two studio albums with the band — 1997's "Jugulator" and 2001's "Demolition" — before PRIEST reunited with Rob Halford in 2003.

Setlist + Video – Judas Priest + Sabaton Kick Off North American Tour

I n support of their new album Invincible Shield , Judas Priest kicked off their North American tour last night (April 18) in Wallingford, Ct. with special guest Sabaton .

The Metal Gods took the stage at the Oakdale Theatre and ripped through an 18-song set that heavily focused on the new record, British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance . Honoring a sizable chunk of the back catalog, Judas Priest played one song off six other albums and two from 1978’s Killing Machine (known to some as Hell Bent for Leather ).

The set mostly mirrored what most fans in Europe already saw the last few weeks, with some slight deviations. Priest also switched up the set on occasion during that run, so we’ll see if the band does the same as this next leg continues.

Meanwhile, Swedish power metal heroes Sabaton played a 12-song, 50-minute set to get Connecticut’s metal maniacs primed for Priest. They played material from seven albums, including their latest, 2022’s The War to End All Wars.

See both setlists and fan-filmed video of each band below.

The tour continues through May 22 and all the remaining dates can be viewed here .

The Rock Revival

The band is still melting faces with old school heavy metal after more than fifty years on the road

Judas Priest live 2024 Invincible Shield Tour

Last night, heavy metal juggernauts Judas Priest brought their highly anticipated Invincible Shield Tour to the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. Just the third stop on the U.S. trek, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers already have the engines revving after kicking things off in Europe. The last time Judas Priest were on U.S. soil was last October for their triumphant performance at Power Trip in California alongside Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, and Tool. They graciously stepped in for Ozzy Osbourne, who had to bow out due to health issues. Judas Priest announced their now-released album, Invincible Shield , on stage, and then proceeded to show the music world why they more than deserve to be mentioned with the likes of their fellow Power Trip performers.

Check out our live photo galleries from the show below.

Sabaton served as special guests for Priest in 2021 on their 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour. That tour actually kicked off right here at Santander Arena, a venue that has rich rock and metal roots. This time, the Swedish metal titans brought their massive army tank drum kit, greatly enhancing their already formidable stage presence. The last time they were here, the group debuted a new song, “Steel Commanders.” While it didn’t make the cut this time around, fans still got a solid 12-song set of hits. They started off with “Ghost Division, the launched right into “The Last Stand.” Other highlights included “The Red Baron,” “The Last Stand,” “Bismarck,” “Stormtroopers,” “Primo Victoria,” and more. They closed out their set with “To Hell and Back.”

judas priest jugulator tour

Another treat for fans was witnessing the return of guitarist Thobbe Englund. After a previous stint with the band from 2012 to 2016, Sabaton brought Englund back into the band following the departure of Tommy Johansson. Back in January, Johansson decided to part ways with the group to “pursue his own path” after seven years with the group. On stage last night, frontman Joakim Brodén made a special acknowledgement of Thobbe’s return. Being back at the Santander Arena supporting Judas Priest, with a former member back in the band, was quite a full-circle moment for Sabaton.

While certainly a niche band in metal music, Sabaton are a thrill to see live. Monster riffs and sweeping melodies accompanied by Brodén’s soaring vocals captivated the crowd before Judas Priest. Sabaton certainly won over some new fans last time they invaded this building, and they delivered the goods once again last night to a sold-out crowd.

Sabaton released their tenth studio album,  The War to End All Wars , in 2022. It performed well, topping the Swedish Albums Chart and peaking at No. 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart and No. 9 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart. The record serves as a sequel to their 2019 outing,  The Great War .

Last April, Sabaton released a cover of Motörhead’s “1916.”

When Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” began to blast through the arena speakers, the energy in room was palpable. The crowd was singing every word in high anticipation for Priest. The lights went down, the curtain dropped, and the band appeared all together, stacked on Scott Travis’s drum riser. They tore into “Panic Attack,” the lead single from their latest hit album and tour namesake. Never a band to rely solely on their classic hits, it would be the first of three helpings of Invincible Shield .

From there, Priest bombarded the crowed with a hefty 18-song set. After opening with a new tune, they launched right into one of their biggest hits – “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.” Showing absolutely no mercy, they ripped through “Rapid Fire” next. Just three songs in, any doubt that this band might be slowing down after five decades was quickly eviscerated. Another massive hit, “Breaking the Law,” immediately followed. What a wild start it was.

judas priest jugulator tour

Early in the set, frontman Rob Halford elicited an eruption from the capacity crowd at Santander Arena when he said, “This city – Reading, Pennsylvania – and this building, is such a great venue for heavy fucking metal!” And he’s not wrong at all. In recent years, Santander Arena and the Santander Performing Arts Center has hosted the likes of Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Buddy Guy, Alice In Chains, Elton John, REO Speedwagon, The Doobie Brothers, Disturbed, Halestorm, A Day to Remember, and many more. In 2018, the Arena played host to thrash metal legends Slayer on their Final Campaign tour along with Anthrax, Lamb of God, and Behemoth. Serving strong country and Latin markets as well, Santander Arena has become one of the most dominant secondary market venues in the country.

judas priest jugulator tour

Other highlights from the set included “Lightning Strike,” “Turbo Lover,” “Sinner,” “Victims of Change,” and the all-new “Crown of Horns,” among others. They pulled tracks from eleven different records out out of the total nineteen in their discography, an impressive sampling of their storied career. They wrapped up their set with the strongest song in their entire catalog – “Painkiller.”

With the crowed needing more, Priest returned and delivered. As “The Hellion” began to play through the speakers, the band launched into a three-song encore of “The Electric Eye, “Hell Bent for Leather,” and “Livin’ After Midnight.” After a set like that, the fans definitely wished the show would keep going well after midnight. Per usual, Priest did not disappoint. They rarely do, if ever. While we’re not sure just how much gas they have left in the tank, the band is racing full speed ahead powered by their latest hit record.

Judas Priest’s  Metal Masters Tour  wrapped up back on on April 8 at Zenith in Paris, France. In addition to Saxon and Uriah Heep, Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons joined the bill at the Mediolanum Forum show in Milan, Italy on April 6. The U.S. leg of the band’s Invincible Shield Tour began on April 18 at the Toyota Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, Connecticut, and runs through up on May 22 at Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater in Syracuse, New York. The band will be making stops at the Prudential Center, Santander Arena, The Armory, and more. The run includes a featured performance at  Welcome to Rockville  in May alongside Mötley Crüe, Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, and many others. Very special guests for the trek will be Swedish metal juggernauts Sabaton.

After the U.S. leg, the run resumes on July 1 at Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany along with Saxon and Uriah Heep once again.

Fresh off their  50th anniversary celebrations , the band’s latest LP Invincible Shield is the follow-up to their acclaimed 2018 album,  Firepower . The latter record was the band’s biggest commercial success, charting at No. 5 on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200 as well as hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. For  Firepower , Judas Priest reunited with producer Tom Allom (Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Krokus), who last produced the band’s 1988 album,  Ram It Down . The record was co-produced by Andy Sneap, who would stepped in as a touring guitarist for the band. Long-time member Glenn Tipton retired from touring after revealing his Parkinson’s diagnoses, just one month before the album’s release. Tipton co-wrote every song on  Firepower . After delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Judas Priest toured relentlessly to celebrate the success of  Firepower  and the band’s five decades of heavy metal.

Judas Priest’s nineteenth studio effort Invincible Shield was released back on March 6. Anchored by the lead single, “Panic Attack,” the album performed well commercially. It hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart, and No. 4 on Top Rock Albums. It peaked at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart, and topped the UK Rock & Metal albums chart. After selling over 50 million albums worldwide, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

  10. Jugulator Tour Reviews

Priest, up close and personal! I was also reminded that this leg of the tour was considerred a warm-up for the band. It's been a while since they played live, so a schedule with small venues was a good way to acclimate Tim into the "live" Priest and to shake off the rust the band may have accumulated over the years.

  12. Judas Priest live review: a triumphant first night on the Invincible

Or maybe an invincible shield. This is the first night of the world tour in support of Judas Priest 's 19th album, Invincible Shield (yeah, we went there). It's a screaming demon of a record that keeps up the hot streak which began with 2014's rocket-fuelled Redeemer Of Souls and continued through 2018's pulverising Firepower.

  19. Judas Priest

The song ends with a repeated chant of the chorus' lyrics before the music ends with a crash, like the world has exploded. Overall, Jugulator is a strong effort from a band faced with the challenge of replacing a key member. For fans of groove/thrash metal and fans of Priest, this album is worth picking up.

  20. Tim 'Ripper' Owens Talks New Music, Judas Priest's Jugulator and More

At the time, Owens waded through a mix of old-school fans who sided with departed vocalist Rob Halford and the new school who adored his fresh approach to records such as Jugulator (1997) and Demolition (2001).. In the years since, with Halford again fronting Priest since Owen's departure in 2003, quite a bit of retrospective love has been heaped onto the Owens era of Priest, with the Ohio ...
