Tarangire National Park Tanzania

Tarangire National Park portal is a non-commercial with all information from wildlife, attractions, Tarangire activities, to safari accommodation, when to go, how to get there, Tarangire Safaris & Tours, Cost of Tarangire Safari and a travel blog.

Ranking as the 6 th largest National Park in Tanzania and covering an area of 2,600 square kilometers, The Tarangire National Park is most popular for its large elephant herds and mini-wildlife migration that takes place during the dry season which sees about 250,000 animals enter the park. See more about Tanzania safari tours.

Location Of Tarangire National Park

Slightly off the popular northern Tanzania Safari Circuit , the park lies between the meadows of Masai Steppe to the south east and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. Within the northern part of Tarangire is the permanent River Tarangire also known as the life-line of the park particularly in the dry season when most of the region is totally dry. This flows northwards until it exits the park in the northwestern corner to pour into Lake Burungi. There are a number of wide swamps which dry into green plains during the dry season in the south.

During you Safari in Tarangire, You are highly recommended to stay for a couple of days especially  in the south of the park which offers a less crowded safari experience and gives you the opportunity to enjoy an authentic African feel of the Tanzania’s countryside.

Tarangire Vegetation

The permanent Tarangire River is the most dominant feature here and it’s after this river that the park was named. there are a number of large swamps that feed off some of its tributaries however, these are usually dry for most of the year but get very impassable during the rains .The Tarangire park is usually very dry, in fact drier than the Serengeti, however its vegetation is much more green especially with lots of elephant grass, vast areas with mixed acacia woodlands and some of the wonderful ribbons of the aquatic forest not to forget the giant baobab tree that can live up to 600 years storing  between 300 and 900 liters of water

Tarangire Wildlife Migration

Every year during the dry season from June to November Tarangire hosts a wildlife migration which is not as dramatic as the Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti, but receives a somewhat large number of animals. As most of this part of the country is dry, the Tarangire River remains the only source of water and consequently attracts large numbers of wildebeests, elephants, gazelles, zebras and hartebeest, buffaloes plus various predators like lions that come to drink and graze around the river banks. during the rain months of November to May, The zebras as well as large herds of wildebeests move into the north-western direction towards the Rift Valley floor amongst the large numbers of animals that spread across the large open areas of the Masaai Steppe and dispersing all the way to Lake Manyara.

A few black rhinos are also thought to be still present in this park. You will obviously see big numbers of elephants gather here as well as the wildebeests and zebras. Among the other common animals in the Tarangire are the leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetah that seem to be popular within the southern open areas. The wild dogs are only seen once in a while

The birds within the Tarangire are also quite many, there are over 545 species that have been identified here. The stunning yellow collared lovebirds and the shy starlings are in plenty here in addition to other species.

The primary Tanzania safari activity in this park is game driving however if you live outside the park boundaries you might be able to enjoy walking tours. and night safaris. Currently Oliver’s Camp organizes walking tours as well as fly camping safaris.

Cost of Tarangire Safari

Tarangire national park faqs, what makes tarangire national park so special.

It’s all about the elephants! Tarangire has the highest concentration of African elephants of any park in northern Tanzania. During the dry season, more than 300 elephants gather along the Tarangire River. The park is also known for massive ancient baobab trees, excellent birding, and some quirky animals like dwarf mongooses.

When is the best time to visit Tarangire?

It depends on your interests! The dry season from June to October is prime for elephant and wildlife viewing as animals gather at the river. November to March is ideal for birding. The wet season’s lush greenery is beautiful too.

How many days do you need for a Tarangire safari?

Most safaris include 1-3 days in Tarangire combined with other parks. But 2-3 full days just in Tarangire allows for the most exploring and avoids that rushed feeling.

What are the entrance fees for Tarangire?

Park fees are $45 per person per day for overseas visitors. You’ll also need to pay vehicle fees. Fees are valid for 24 hours from first use.

When does Tarangire open and close each day?

Gates open at 6:30am and close at 6:30pm, allowing for full days of game driving. Night driving isn’t permitted.

What's the weather and climate like?

As a year-round park, Tarangire sees dry seasons from June to October with temps from 68F-86F, and wet seasons from November to May averaging 68F-75F. Rainfall averages 30 inches.

What wildlife is there besides elephants inTarangire National Park ?

Lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, hartebeest, kudu, oryx, eland, gazelles, mongoose, pythons, and over 550 bird species including ostriches!

Any advice for a first time safari in Tarangire?

Pack binoculars, camera, snacks/water for long drives, sun protection, and an open adventurous spirit! Having a guide helps maximize wildlife viewing – let them know what you’re most interested in seeing. Slow down and soak in the whole experience.

The Tarangire River with its elephant herds, baobab trees, Termite mounds, Silale Swamps (seasonal), observation hills, and ranger-led walks for a close-up experience.

What are the main accommodation options in and around the park?

From budget camping to luxury lodges, options include:

  • Lemiyon Tented Camp – mid-range tented luxury
  • Olarro Lodge – high-end lodge with excellent service
  • Farmhouse Lodge – budget night stop option near the park
  • Camping – public campsites in the park like Ngoshoitong Hill

  • Mid-range lodge/camping – $300-400 per person per day
  • Luxury lodge stay – $500-800+ per person per day

Any safety tips for a Tarangire safari?

Always listen to your ranger or guide. Keep your distance from animals and don’t get out of the vehicle unless they say it’s okay. Bring insect repellent and watch for thorns on bush walks. Respect park rules for your own safety and preserving the environment.

What should I pack for a visit to Tarangire National Park?

Pack lightweight, neutral colored clothes, hiking shoes, hat, sunglasses, binoculars, camera gear, bathing suit, flashlight, bug spray, sunscreen, medication, and other safari essentials. Layers are key for chilly morning drives.

What's the deal with those huge baobab trees?

Baobabs are icons of the African landscape – some in Tarangire are over 2,000 years old! Elephants eat their bark and long tusks can damage them, but baobabs heal and regrow. Their age gives them a spiritual significance across African culture.

Any tips for getting great photos on safari?

Use the best zoom lens you can, keep your camera handy, shoot during the golden hours of dawn/dusk, get to eye level with subjects, wait for action shots, adjust settings for wildlife, and have patience for that perfect moment!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A TARANGIRE SAFARI

Our day began at 6 am when the tour guide picked us up at the hotel in Moshi. We arrived at Tarangire National Park around 9:30 am and were excited to start the game drive.

The safari lasted about 5 to 6 hours including a stop for lunch and we got to see an abundance of animals including lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, cheetahs, wildebeests, and more!

My favorite area of the national park was the Tarangire River, which was the most active with many animal species to see.

We visited in October, which is the dry season, and the Tarangire River was one of the only sources of drinking water for the animals, hence why we saw so many of them.

Tarangire National Park 40

And here’s the best part – these elephants are not shy! They are very used to visitors, often wandering close to the safari vehicles, and that was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

It’s worth noting that no guide can guarantee that you’ll see any specific animal species, and rightfully so as it’s nature.

Also, we were not allowed to exit the vehicle, apart from the designated areas for lunch and restrooms, so do keep that in mind when booking a safari in Tarangire.

After spending some time at the lake and taking countless photos, we quickly stopped for lunch with our guide and then resumed the game driving before getting back to the hotel for the night.

IS THERE WI-FI ON THE SAFARI?

If you have a local SIM card, the mobile network is relatively consistent in Tarangire National Park.

This means that you will be able to use your mobile data for browsing the internet, posting on social media, and staying connected as a whole.

The safari vehicles are also conveniently fitted with a Wi-Fi dongle.

Some lodges inside the park offer free Wi-Fi and most hotels in cities and towns also have Wi-Fi available for guest use.

Yet, keep in mind that you’re in a remote location and the connection might not always be strong.

WHERE TO STAY IN TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK ?

Inside the national park, there are half a dozen accommodations available and we personally stayed at the beautiful Ndovu Tented Lodge by Nasikia Camps .

Ndovu Tented Camp offers an enchanting setting to unwind after the day’s adventures and you’ll even be able to spot wildlife right in front of the camp.

Enjoy your meals in the thatched main area, go for a dip in the swimming pool, and enjoy a sundowner while sitting around the campfire.

There are some great accommodation options located within the national park.

Tarangire National Park offers great wildlife viewings...

...as well as bush walks.

You might spot some wildlife from the terrace of your accommodation...

...or elsewhere while on safari.

… the more intimate and remote Kuro Tarangire ...

...the diminutive dik dik...

...ever present impala...

Smaller predators such a serval and bat-eared fox also occur.

Tarangire River snakes its way through the park.

Tarangire National Park

Famous for its baobabs and massive elephant herds, Tarangire shows its quieter side in the park's southern half.

Tarangire National Park covers an undulating area of 2,600km 2 , between the plains of the Maasai Steppe to the south-east, and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. The northern part of Tarangire is dominated by the perennial Tarangire River, which flows through increasingly incised ravines until it leaves the north-western corner of the park to flow into Lake Burungi. In the south are a series of vast swamps which dry into verdant plains during the dry season. Although Tarangire is one of only four parks on Tanzania's sometimes busy 'northern circuit', it is often either missed out, or given less than 24 hours, by the many relatively cursory mini-bus tours. This means that few visitors go beyond the park's busy northern area, where the majority of camps and lodges are located. If you decide to come to Tarangire, then we recommend spending a few days in the south of the park, which gets few visitors and retains a real air of wilderness.

When to go to Tarangire National Park

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Tarangire in Tanzania

Tanzania in January

January usually marks the start of the short dry season, although the exact timings of this are a little unpredictable. You can expect clear blue skies and sunshine, if the short rains have stopped, and the temperatures will be building. The short dry season is a little less pronounced in Southern Tanzania, and so it can still be wet in these areas. It is an interesting time for avians as resident birds go into breeding plumage and migrant species can be present. Once the New Year busy period has quietened down, January can offer great value and quieter parks, although the weather can be variable, and in the Selous and Ruaha the wildlife is more dispersed.

  • Variable weather: clear & dry or cloudy with some rain.
  • Occasional thunderstorms may occur.
  • A good time of year for birding as and many migrant species are around
  • The wildebeest migration is gathering in the southern Serengeti.
  • Busy in early January, quietening down through the month.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Tanzania in February

February is during the short dry season and is one of the hottest months in Tanzania, with temperatures reaching around 33°Celsius. This can be a good time to visit, as some areas of the Northern Circuit are comparatively quieter than during the European summer months, and lodge rates are also a little lower. The wildebeest will typically be on the southern plains of the Serengeti for their calving season, which tends to occur in a 2-3 week window in early-mid February – although this does vary year on year. This is also a particularly rewarding time for birdlife, as northern hemisphere migrants join the resident species.

  • Hot and dry weather.
  • Wildebeest migration calving on Serengeti’s southern plains.
  • Ngorongoro Crater and southern Serengeti busy for the migration.
  • Selous and Ruaha are typically quiet at this time.
  • The parks are likely to be lush and green, leading to pretty landscape

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Tanzania in March

The heavier ‘long rains’ start in earnest in March although exactly when varies year on year. With no need to stay close to permanent water sources, migratory wildlife disperses, and so game viewing starts to become more challenging. This is most prominently seen in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest migration may still be calving, or have moved on into the central regions of the Serengeti. Many of the camps in the southern parks close mid March and mobile tented camps in the Serengeti will wind down towards the end of the month in order to move location or carry out refurbishments, ready for the new tourist season.

  • Hot with building humidity, before the rains begin at some point.
  • Wildlife viewing is variable depending on the start of the rains.
  • Parks are quiet and rates are low.
  • Not great for southern or western Tanzania.
  • March can be a good time for birding, with many migrant species.

Weather in March

Tanzania in April

April is in the middle of the long rainy season and is the wettest month, with on average 250mm of rain. Temperatures are fairly high and humid in comparison to the rest of the year. Expect the bush to be lush and flowering, and alive with insects, birds and smaller animals. It is however also dense, allowing wildlife to hide, which in turn makes game viewing harder. This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open. The rates are significantly cheaper, and so if you are willing to work harder to spot the bigger game, some accommodation bargains can be had.

  • Heavy rain expected, with impressive thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Many camps closed and roads impassable due to ground conditions.
  • Rates are at their lowest all year round, with very few other tourists
  • Places that are open are green and vibrant, wildlife more dispersed.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in April

Tanzania in May

As Tanzania is close to the equator there is no dramatic difference in climate throughout the year, but temperatures do start to drop a little in May. The rains are likely to still be present, although potentially clearing towards the end of the month. Visitor numbers and lodge rates are still low. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. Virtually all camps in southern Tanzania remain closed, and many of the roads and tracks in the Selous become impassable.

  • Heavy rains and storms are likely, this can create some dramatic skies
  • Blissfully quiet in northern Tanzania, and a good time to avoid crowds
  • The parks are likely to look lush and green, with long grass.
  • Wildlife is likely to be more dispersed, with fewer sightings.
  • The low prices make safaris much more affordable at this time.

Weather in May

Tanzania in June

The rains come to an end at some point during the month and migratory wildlife begins to be drawn back to perennial water sources as the land starts to dry up. It’s likely that the parks will still be quite green and the grass high though, so walking and fly-camping may be unlikely. This marks the start of the season with camps reopening, but prices are still more affordable than the subsequent months. The migration may still be in the Western Corridor, or on the move northwards towards the Mara River. Western Tanzania presents more challenging conditions for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale National Park, as the chimps are higher in the mountains.

  • A transitory time for the migration – moving from west to north.
  • The parks may still be quite green, and grasses high.
  • Wildlife may be dispersed still.
  • Relatively low visitor numbers and good value, shoulder season prices.

Weather in June

Tanzania in July

July is considered to be the start of the peak season, with no rainfall expected and pleasant daytime temperatures. As the parks dry, the wildlife congregates in fewer areas, grass is eaten and trampled by the migration, and game viewing gets better and better. The wildebeest are typically arriving in the northern Serengeti, ready to begin their period of crossings of the Mara River. In the Selous and Ruaha wildlife sightings can be fantastic, with animals gathering around the lakes and rivers. Great conditions and school holidays mean the parks are at their busiest, with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti particularly crowded.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly and windy in the mornings and evenings.
  • Great wildlife viewing, as water sources diminish.
  • The most popular time of year with very high visitor numbers.
  • Prices are at their highest due to the great conditions on the ground.
  • To avoid the crowds consider Tanzania’s southern parks.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in July

Tanzania in August

August is the middle of the long dry season, with clear skies and sunny weather. You can expect some cooler weather at night and first thing in the morning. Remember to pack layered clothing, so you can wrap up warm on your early morning game drives, but remain comfortable as it heats up throughout the day. August is a very popular time to visit, so accommodation prices are at their highest and advanced booking is necessary. It can get noticeably busier in some of the northern parks – in particular the Ngorongoro Crater and northern Serengeti, as visitors flock to the area in hope of witnessing an exciting migration river crossing.

  • Dry and warm daytimes, chilly in the early mornings and evenings.
  • General wildlife viewing should be excellent.
  • An exciting time of year for the wildebeest migration.
  • Certain areas will be very busy and camps fill up fast.
  • Great wildlife sightings in the Selous and Ruaha, and fewer people.

Weather in August

Tanzania in September

September can be an excellent time of year to visit Tanzania. As the parks continue to dry up the wildlife becomes increasingly reliant on the remaining water sources, leading to high densities of animals. Whilst early September can be busy, with fewer families traveling at this time the parks typically become quieter as the month goes on. You are still likely to see the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti, with river crossings occurring on a regular basis. Tanzania’s southern parks are also fantastic at this time of year, generally receiving far fewer visitors than the north, and wildlife sightings can be great. Prices remain high and the weather generally remains good.

  • Wildlife viewing in September can be fantastic.
  • Whilst still fairly busy, often the parks are typically a little quiet
  • The parks will start to become very dry, with little new vegetation
  • Cooler mornings and evenings, warming up during the day.
  • Prices remain high.

Weather in September

Tanzania in October

At the tail end of the dry season, the wildlife should be the easiest to spot, although photographers should be aware that it can be a bit dusty at this time of year, as there has been no rain for several months. Great general wildlife viewing throughout as animals are attracted to remaining sources of water. Elephant numbers are particularly high at this time in Tarangire, and Mahale and Katavi are especially rewarding with frequent wildlife sightings close to camp. There is a chance of rainfall towards the end of the month, if the short rains commence. While prices remain high, visitors numbers are significantly lower than in July-August.

  • Mostly dry and temperatures comfortably warm, with the chance of storm
  • Great game viewing although the landscape can be a bit barren.
  • Much lower visitor numbers than the earlier months.

Weather in October

Tanzania in November

In November you can expect the start of the short rains, although the start date varies every year. The rains are highly localised, and are much lighter and more unpredictable than the long rains that occur earlier in the year. These should not really interfere with your safari – as the game viewing at this time is still good - but you should pack a waterproof jacket and be prepared for some short rain showers! The majority of tented camps remain open, but some of the mobile camps in Northern Tanzania will close for the latter half on the month. Given the seasonality, camps are charging shoulder season rates so there are often some bargains to be had. Early November can offer great value for money and the weather conditions are likely to be comparable to late October.

  • Parks are comparatively quiet and prices at the lower end.
  • Some camps will close towards the end of the month for maintenance.
  • Good wildlife sightings, but animals will disperse when rain starts
  • The wildebeest migration is on the move and the location unpredictable

Weather in November

Tanzania in December

December is also during the short rainy period, but this does not stop Tanzania being a popular destination to spend the festive period. Be aware that many of the lodges book up early, and charge peak rates over this time. Advanced booking is essential over this period, especially if travelling in larger family groups. Travelling in December outside of the festive period allows travellers to make use of excellent shoulder season rates. Temperatures are pleasant with the averages of 27Celsius, although there is the chance of intermittent thunderstorms.

  • Variable weather:clear & dry or cloudy with some rain and thunderstorm
  • Good general game viewing in parks with low seasonality - Serengeti.
  • Very quiet early in the month, becoming exceptionally busy.
  • Prices reflect this – great value rising to the highest they are.
  • The wildlife in southern Tanzania is more dispersed.

Who To Book Your Tarangire National Park Safari With

For our first ever African Safari, we chose to go with Shadows of Africa and here’s why we highly recommend them.

Over a 5 day period, we explored Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater , visited local Maasai and Hadzabe tribes, plus we stayed at some unbelievable accommodations on our Tanzania safari itinerary .

Seeing the animals up close and personally was obviously incredible, but the organisation and service by the whole team was definitely the cherry on top of the whole experience.

Shadows Of Africa was born in 2010 and consists of a team of like-minded people, who have spent an extensive amount of time living and traveling around Africa.

The guides at Shadows of Africa were our eyes and ears of the experience, and our main driver Moody was such a knowledgeable and likeable guy.

All of the guides speak fluent English and have a real passion for the wildlife of Africa. They were happy to answer any questions we had, and made the trip a memorable one for sure.

All safari prices differ depending on whether you choose to customise your package or what type of experience you’re looking for.

We opted for the Four Day Tanzania Express Safari where we visited Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, a local Maasai Tribe and the Hadzabe Tribe. As well some beautiful accommodations!

This tour is priced at roughly $2,275 USD per person based on a two person group and we cannot recommend it enough!

However, you can send Shadows Of Africa a free enquiry, as well as check out the vast range of fully customisable safari packages they offer.

What’s Included In The Safari?

June, July, August, September, October, November.

December, January, February, March.

In terms of value for money, the periods just on the edge of peak season and low season are when you can get the best deals.

Travelling around November is a great time to go, because all the accommodations drop their rates as of the 1st November.

Between June and October, which is the solid dry season in Tanzania, is when the animals are easiest to spot. But wildlife can be spotted all year round. Most camps and lodges are open all year round too.

Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena, and African Wild Dog.

The big five being, rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard.

However, Tarangire National Park is still one of the most famous parks in Africa.

The Elephants

Expect to see a lot of elephants at Tarangire National Park Tanzania! The park is famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees.

The name ‘Tarangire’ originates from the river that crosses the park, so the is a crucial watering hole for the elephants, as well as plenty of other African wildlife.

Tarangire National Park is known as the quiet gem of the northern safari circuit.

This is because compared to Serengeti, Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, they have fewer vehicles, even in the dry season. Making it a favourite amongst Tanzania’s guides due to a migration of approximately 3,000 elephant that peaks from July to November.

The Lions, Buffalo, Giraffes, Zebras & More

Buffalo and lions are also common, but trying to find a leopard may be tricky. If you experience a three-day safari, obviously your chances are much higher, but it can’t be guaranteed.

FUN FACT: If you didn’t already know, ‘Simba’ means ‘Lion’ in Swahili (a language spoken throughout many countries in Africa). So be sure to keep your eye out for some Simba’s along the trail!

Also, if you’re a lover of the Lion King then you’ll definitely know Zazu.

He’s a red-billed hornbill who plays the the flying wise mentor to Mufasa and Simba. His species of bird can be found at Tarangire National Park, Tanzania.

The Birds & Trees

Tarangire is a great bird-watching site with more than 500 species recorded.

The swamps have the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Migratory birds are also present from November to April.

During your visit to Tanzania, you are also bound to spot the famous Baobab Tree. The baobab tree is an icon of the African savannah, also known as the African ‘tree of life’.

Tarangire National Park

Serengeti wildlife, minus the crowds

Africa Geographic Stories & Galleries

Tuesday, 26 April 2022

Tarangire National Park

Northern Tanzania’s safari scene is dominated by the Serengeti and neighbouring Ngorongoro Crater. There are many good reasons for this – sightings are reliable, especially when the Great Migration is passing through, and the scenery is breathtaking. Yet there is a third, often forgotten, national park in the northern circuit: Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is a place of giant baobabs, fever tree forests, shimmering swamps and sweeping vistas, where wildlife roams in abundance. In this region, travel is still infused with the true romance of an African safari.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Situated in Tanzania’s Manyara Region, just southeast of Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire is just over 100km from the city of Arusha. This makes it easily accessible for travellers en route to the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area , situated further west. The national park extends over 2,850km 2 (280,500 hectares), but the land available to wildlife is expanded by Game Controlled Areas, conservancies, and the Tarangire Conservation Area. Here, people and wildlife exist side-by-side. Several luxury lodges operate in these concessions on the park’s fringes, allowing their guests to experience both the park and the increased freedom away from its confines – by offering night drives, for example.

From the Tarangire River in the north, rolling hills give way to vast swamps. These soak up the rain like sponges and maintain a tinge of green, even during the dry season. Away from the watery marshlands, the landscape is dotted with granitic ridges, red-earth termite mounds and sparse whistling thorn ( Vachellia drepanolobium ) woodlands. Throughout, bulbous baobabs ( Adansonia digitata ) impose themselves upon the backdrop, dwarfing even the enormous herds of elephants that forage around them.

The Tarangire Migration

Life in the northern section of the park (in terms of lodges, campsites, and wildlife) revolves around the sinuous bends of the Tarangire River. This geographical feature plays a pivotal role in Tarangire’s most remarkable natural phenomenon – the Tarangire migration. Though not involving the same wildlife numbers as the famous Great Migration, Tarangire’s migration is arguably equally sensational given its strict seasonality and the exceptional variety and densities of wildlife.

The park is part of an enormous ecosystem that includes Lake Manyara, the Maasai Steppe, and the area from Lake Natron to Mount Kilimanjaro. Every year during the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes one of the only available sources of water, and tens of thousands of animals are drawn to its banks and floodplains from miles in every direction. These include several species of antelope, buffalo, giraffe and zebra. Elephants also arrive in their hundreds, and Tarangire is believed to have one of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania.

Africa Geographic Travel

Elephants, elephants (and everything else) everywhere

Tarangire is an elephant enthusiast’s paradise. It is impossible to spend time in the park without encountering these iconic pachyderms, feeding at the base of a baobab, strolling through the riverine forests or playing in the mud of the marshes. They are often present in a conglomeration of herds that may number close to 300 individuals – an incredible sight for even the most seasoned safari-goer.

Elephants aside, Tarangire is home to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife outside of the Serengeti ecosystem. The dry season influx of ungulates sees a profusion of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, eland, hartebeest and buffalo assembled near the river, or around residual pools in the swamps. Such a concentration of prey serves to attract the attention of the park’s various resident predators – particularly the ever-attendant lions. The lions of the Silale Swamps are particularly renowned, not only for their marshy hunting techniques, but also for their habit of lounging in the boughs of trees, perhaps to escape the tsetse flies. Leopards and cheetah are also present, though less regularly seen, and even African painted wolves (wild dogs) come haring through the park on occasion.

Away from the wetter areas of the park, visitors may even be fortunate enough to spot a gerenuk or fringe-eared oryx , making Tarangire one of the few places in Tanzania to see these arid specialists.

Tarangire National Park

Twitching through Tarangire

For those able to tear their eyes away from the mammal life on display, Tarangire’s many varied habitats confer it the status of one of Tanzania’s top birding hotspots, with over 500 species recorded. From chattering flocks of yellow-collared lovebirds to stately ostriches picking their way across the plains, avid birders will find it a struggle to know where to look next. In contrast to mammal viewing, the best bird sightings are during the wetter months (November to May). This is when the swamps come into their own for waterbird watching, and migrant arrivals fill the skies. In addition, many dry-region bird species such as vulturine guineafowl and northern pied babbler are present at the margins of their ranges. Enthusiasts can while away the hours searching for the drab but sought-after endemic rufous-tailed weavers and ashy starlings, or search for the flash of colour signalling the arrival of the dazzling red-and-yellow barbets.

Explore & Stay

Like much of East Africa, Tarangire experiences two rainy seasons: the “short” rains in November and the “long” rains in April and May. However, heavy rainfall can occur any time from November until May, and many of the lodges and camps close down for the rainy season when the park becomes boggy and difficult to traverse.

safari tanzanie tarangire

Accommodation options in Tarangire National Park and surrounds range from public and private campsites to high-end luxury lodges. Naturally, Tarangire is at its best during the dry season, from July until October. During this time, concentrations of wildlife are mind-boggling, and, conveniently, this is also when tsetse flies are at their least active. Walking safaris at this time of year are as phenomenal as game drives, and the open habitats allow for comfortable and easy encounters with the larger wildlife species. For those looking to combine their trip with a chance to see the Great Migration , this is generally when the zebra and wildebeest begin to move north into the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

One of the major attractions of Tarangire National Park is that even during the tourism high season (June to August) when many of the parks throughout Africa are at their busiest, it remains one of Tanzania’s best-kept, uncrowded secrets.

safari tanzanie tarangire

The perfect safari

Tarangire is often treated simply as a stop-over between the more popular destinations on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. Yet those visitors who opt to explore this varied and fascinating national park are richly rewarded by one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations. With magnificent scenery and an abundance of wildlife, Tarangire National Park has every ingredient needed for the perfect safari.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. Location of Oliver's Camp

Oliver’s is in the remote south-eastern reaches of Tarangire National Park, in northern Tanzania, close to the game-rich Silale Swamps. In April and May, at the end of the annual rains, the landscape is lush and dotted with wildflowers. From August until October, herds of antelope and zebras pass through Tarangire. At this time, the park has the highest concentration of mammals in the country.

Throughout the year, Tarangire is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo and a high concentration of big cats. There are also animals such as wild dogs, kudu, oryx and gerenuks that won’t be found in the north of Tanzania. And for birders, there are more than 550 species, many of which are attracted to the park’s swamps.

A typical day on safari at Oliver's Camp

We head out on game drives or walks first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Exact times differ slightly with the seasons, but we aim to get you out and about when the animals are at their most active. If you have booked a private vehicle, you can discuss your own schedule with your guide.

Start the day with an early morning wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast before you depart for a game drive or walk or opt to take a picnic with you to enjoy in the bush. By mid-morning, you’ll be back in camp with some time to relax and freshen up before lunch.

It’s siesta time for most of the afternoon, when temperatures reach their peak. Take the opportunity to relax with a book or have a nap. Then it’s on to afternoon tea before you depart for a game drive with sundowners. Round off another perfect day in the bush with drinks by the campfire and dinner with good company.

Please enquire if you are interested in booking a private vehicle, ideal for those who have special interests. Please note that families with children under 12 must be in a private vehicle.

What to expect during the year

The best months to visit Tarangire are September and October, when the peak season crowds have thinned and the dry conditions are still excellent for wildlife spotting. That said, Oliver’s is a year-round camp, where the wet seasons are great for photography and birding .

Why travel at this time

There’s usually a break in the rains in January and February before the long rains begin in March. Migratory birds are in the region and photographic conditions are great, with lush landscapes and clear skies. There are also fewer tourists travelling to the region at this time.

This is the hottest time of year, with an average high of 29°C/84°F. The average dips to about 16°C/61°F. Expect some showers in January and February. The long rains begin in March.

Low temp: 16°C / 61°F

High temp: 29°C / 84°F

Rainfall: 81mm / 3.2in

April sees the most rainfall, at the peak of the long rains. They slow in May with afternoon showers that shouldn’t affect your safari too much. It’s a good time to avoid the crowds and have wildlife viewings to yourself. This is also the cheapest time to travel. June is dry and a great month to visit, just before peak season kicks off.

April is the wettest month of the year with an average high of 27°C/81°F, while May sees less rain and slightly cooler temperatures, peaking at 25°C/77°F with an average low of 16°C/61°F. June is the start of the dry season, with an average high of 25°C/77°F and a low of 14°C/57°F.

Low temp: 14°C / 57°F

High Temp: 25°C / 77°F

Rainfall: 5mm / 0.2in

It’s peak season in Tarangire, but this doesn’t affect Oliver’s Camp, given its location in a private concession. The dry conditions are perfect for spotting wildlife gathering around waterholes.

The maximum temperature of the dry season ranges from 24°C/75°C in July to 27°C/81°F in September. The low hovers around 13°C/55°F.

Low temp: 13°C / 55°F

High temp: 25°C / 77°F

Rainfall: 13mm / 0.5in

This a great time to travel. Peak season crowds have thinned out and the rates are lower. October is still dry. The short rains, which peak in December, revive the parched landscape and the migratory birds begin to arrive from the northern hemisphere.

The short rains start around November and last for roughly a month, with most rainfall occuring in December. It starts feeling quite humid toward the end of the year, with a high temperature of 29°C/84°F and an average low that ranges from 15°C/59°F in October to 17°C/63°F in December.

Rainfall: 71mm / 2.8in

Guest reviews

A home from home atmosphere which we loved. All the staff were very welcoming, warm, caring, and thoughtful. They couldn't do enough for us. Elizabeth & Victoria, thank you. The food was excellent. Our Guide, Augustino was tops! As his name suggests! Great! Thank you Augustino. I felt particularly sad to leave this camp, it felt warm and intimate. Thank you to all at Oliver's Camp and hope to see you soon.

Tripadvisor 1

Staying at Oliver’s was like being transported into a special universe. The camp is perched on a small hillside and each little bungalow is privately set for perfect sunset views and outdoor shower privacy. You’d never know anyone else was around. The lounge and pool are amazing.
We stayed at Oliver’s Camp during our Honeymoon and it was spectacular. The daily game drives were informative, interesting and comfortable. Our guide, Augustino, knew all the animals, sharing interesting facts, could track the animals so well, was super friendly and answered all of our questions. But the service didn’t stop at the drives. Back at camp, the staff was top notch as well. Elizabeth and Godlove were especially incredible, making us feel like family. No ask was too great and they were masters of customer service.

Tarangire National Park wildlife

Tarangire National Park is in northern Tanzania , just south of Lake Manyara . This is a protected area of colossal baobabs, grassy plains and huge herds of elephant. The park is one of the most underrated of Tanzania’s attractions, receiving just a fraction of the Serengeti’s visitors, which means more space and exclusivity for those who do make it to Tarangire.

As well as 300-strong herds of elephant, visitors will find big groups of buffalo and healthy populations of lion and leopard. During the dry season, Tarangire has the highest concentration of mammals in the country. There are wild dog and rare antelope such as gerenuk, plus more than 550 species of birds to spot throughout the year.

Tarangire is the ideal park for those who want to explore beyond game drives. Walk through the savannah to study the smallest creatures and learn about tracking animals. Soar through the sky in a hot-air balloon at dawn or head out on a night drive to find nocturnal wildlife.

Tarangire National Park

Welcome to tarangire national park.

Tarangire National Park is one of the best national parks in Tanzania located in the wordof Masai Steppe to the south east and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. The park occupies an area of 2,600 sq. km and is known to have a vast variety of wildlife species with amazing accommodation facilities for tourists to rest in when they are on a Tanzania Safari tour .

Tarangire national park is found in Tanzania and is one of the national parks in the northern Tanzania circuit. Located a short drive from Arusha, this destination is also found close to other wildlife viewing destinations such as lake Manyara national park.  The name Tarangire after which the national park is called comes from the Tarangire river which crosses through the park. Different wildlife species drink from the river which is a primary source of water for the animals especially during the dry season.

ATTRACTIONS IN TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

safari tanzanie tarangire

The giant baobab tree

safari tanzanie tarangire

It has a “gigantic” trunk that can hold up to 300 liters of water. They have a lengthy life expectancy and can live for up to 600 years. The edible seeds of this tree are a significant source of food for a variety of animals. Elephants, on the other hand, sharpen their massive tusks on the bark of these trees. According to legend, these trees could easily roam over the African continent, but God was irritated by their aimless movement, so he chose to install them upside down to prevent them from moving again.

Birding in Tarangire

Enjoy seeing a diverse range of beautiful and rare bird species during your vocation in Tarangire national park. The marshes of Tarangire are home to around 550 distinct bird species. Tarangire is a well-known safari site for bird lovers who find themselves engrossed for an extended period of time. Crested francolins, hoopoes, yellow-necked spurfow, hornbills, guinea fowl, steppe eagles, brown parrots, the enormous lappet-faced vulture, white-bellied go away bird, bateleur eagles, mouse birds, Kori bustards, yellow-collared lovebirds, bee-eaters are some of the bird species that can be spotted during your safari in Tarangire-tanzania.

The Wildlife Migration in Tarangire

safari tanzanie tarangire

During the dry season, from June to October, most of the Tarangire Region is completely dry, with only a few remaining water sources. Unimaginable vast herds of various animals migrate into the park due to the Tarangire River’s waters attracting them. This massive wildlife migration, albeit not as well-known as the annual Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti , sees elephants, hartebeests, wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras, as well as predators like lions and leopards, enter the park in great numbers. Make this park a part of your northern Tanzania safari since the vegetation is sparse and arid, making for excellent animal viewing.

Tanzania’s elephant population

Tarangire National park’s largest elephant population, which is regarded to be the highest in Tanzania , is one of the main attractions that has helped it become world famous. As the dry season develops from June to October, and the terrain becomes increasingly dryer, you’ll encounter big elephant herds of up to 300 elephants mining the dry riverbed of the Tarangire River in search of underground streams of water to quench their thirst. The arrival of the rains, on the other hand, provides plenty of pastures and water, causing the animals to disperse throughout the park; however, due to the large number of elephants that live here, these land giants can still be seen even during the rainy season.

Poacher’s Hide

safari tanzanie tarangire

Lemiyon Triangle

This is yet another must-see attraction during your safari in Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park. Massive baobab trees and enormous flocks of red-billed quelea birds may be found in Lemiyon. This unspoiled location is nestled away in the park’s northernmost reaches, forming a triangle zone. The enormous baobab trees that loom alongside the road with their colossal silver trunks and multitude of gnarled branches are the most outstanding form of vegetation here. Lemiyon is exceptionally wonderful for raptor viewing, and even non-birders will be surprised by the quantity of these strong aerial carnivores.

Tarangire River

safari tanzanie tarangire

In Tanzania’s wildlife viewing safaris in Tarangire National Park, the Tarangire River provides a haven for many animals, including a significant concentration of elephants, who come to the river banks to drink water and cool off from the scorching sun. Elephants excavating on the sand near the Tarangire River in an attempt to get subsurface water have been spotted. Leopards, lions, wildebeests, zebras, buffaloes, and gazelles are among the creatures that can be observed along the Tarangire River’s banks.

Matete Woodlands

Matete offers excellent leopard watching as well as the opportunity to glimpse the uncommon oryx antelope. The towering elephant grass and prickly reeds that grow along the river banks on the western side of the region give the place its name. Matete is the best place in the park to see leopards on a regular basis. These secretive cats are frequently seen among the acacia tortilla trees’ branches.

Kitibong Hill

safari tanzanie tarangire

Kitibong Hill is a stunning area in Tarangire National Park that is home to enormous herds of Cape buffalo and endangered wild dogs. While on a Tanzania safari in Tarangire National Park, you can see cape buffaloes tossing their huge bossed horns and surging across the acacia plains of the area.

The spectacular African wild dogs can be seen rushing in groups of 6-20 in this Kitibong Hill area. Travelers that visit Tarangire National Park while on a Tanzania safari will have the opportunity to see and meet these attractions in the park’s environment. Choose Focus East Africa Tours that will take you on a safari to Tarangire National Park for a truly unforgettable Tanzania-African safari experience.

The dry season in Tarangire national park is good for wildlife viewing during safaris at this destination and it takes place during the months of June to October. Wildlife species are known to gather at water points around the national park to drink water making it easy to spot them.

Large herds of elephants are among the wildlife species which can be seen during a tour around Tarangire national park. The park also consists of swamps which act as an alternative source of water for the wildlife species.

The scenery in Tarangire national park is characterized by acacia woodland, baobab trees as well as savannah grassland. Termite mounds can also be seen around the national park during wildlife viewing experiences at the destination.

The baobab trees which are scattered around Tarangire national park act as shelter for the wildlife species and according to the Maasai people, these trees are used to cure certain diseases as well as among other pastoralist tribes.

Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) manages the national park and it is also in charge of regulating the parks activities and also promotes the conservation of wildlife as well as setting the charges and fees in the national park.

Some of the fees paid by tourists in Tarangire national park include entrance fees which are payments made to access the national park. These fees vary according to foreign residents, nonresidents and East Africans.

Entrance fees is paid in USD for nonresidents who pay 53 USD while East Africans visiting Tarangire national park make payments in Tanzania shillings.

Best time to visit Tarangire national park

The dry season is recommended for amazing wildlife viewing activities in Tarangire national park which however is a good destination to experience wildlife viewing all year round. Tourists can also enjoy seeing wildlife during the wet season when they migrate to areas in the park with good vegetation.

The grass in the national park is longer during the wet season which may make it a little difficult to see the wildlife species as they graze. The roads are a little bit messy during the wet season which makes the dry season more favorable for wildlife viewing.

Tourists visiting Tarangire national park on a wildlife viewing adventure can also see a variety of attractions which include the following;

Wildlife species

Being part of the northern tourist circuit, Tarangire national park offers tourists visiting the destination amazing wildlife viewing experiences all year round. There are different wildlife species which can be seen during safaris in the national park and they include large herds of elephants, buffalos, zebras, gazelles, kudu, hartebeests, wildebeests, waterbucks, elands, giraffes, dik dik, olive baboons as well as predators like leopards, lions, cheetahs, caracals among others.

The bird species which can be seen include starlings, bee eaters, kori bustards, vultures, eagles, striped swallows, plovers, hammerkops, yellow collared lovebirds, ostriches among others.

Local community

Tourists visiting Tarangire national park also interact with the local community which consists of Maasai people that are famous for their nomadic way of life.

WHY SHOULD YOU VISIT TARANGIRE?

safari tanzanie tarangire

Predators such as lions and other predators are commonly seen. The park is home to over 500 bird species, including some that are peculiar to Tanzania. Away from the bustling north, the park’s southern end is home to walking safari camps, which allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the experience of exploring the African wilderness on foot.

Tarangire boasts some of the country’s largest elephant populations. 5,000 of these gentle giants move to Tarangire during peak migration season, which runs from July to October, and you can sometimes observe groups of 300 elephants at once. Elephants aren’t the only ones who move over these grasslands. Other mammals such as lions, zebras, and antelopes can also be found.

The vast grasslands and Baobab trees give this national park a harsh, “ Out of Africa” vibe that is unique among Tanzania’s national parks. It’s only a short drive from Arusha on tarmac roads, so it’s a pretty straightforward trip, and it’s ideal for a one-or two-day safari after a Kilimanjaro trek or other safaris in Tanzania. Discover hundreds of old rock paintings in the Kolo area by going on a walking safari and marveling at ancient baobabs.

HOW TO GET TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

safari tanzanie tarangire

By air- The best way to get to Tarangire is to fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA ) which is just adjacent to Arusha town -the starting point of northern safari circuit tourism parks. Another option is to land to Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and then book a domestic flight to Arusha Airport (ARK). If you want to save money on your ticket, fly to Nairobi, Kenya, and then take one of the buses between Arusha and Nairobi . If you take a morning pick-up, you can arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon. In most situations, your tour operator will pick you up from the airport and arrange for any additional transportation.

There are daily flights from Arusha and the Serengeti to Tarangire, but it’s also a pleasant two-hour drive from Arusha to the entrance gate of Tarangire. Moving on, Lake Manyara (100km/60mi in approximately two hours) and the Ngorongoro Crater (180km/110mi in about four hours) are both easily accessible.

Normally, your safari or tour operator would book these charter flights as part of your safari package. Domestic flights can be booked with any domestic airline, including Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Regional Air, ZanAir, Safari Air Link, or Coastal Aviation.

By Road -The trip from Arusha to Tarangire National Park is approximately 140 kilometers long and takes about two to three hours. Unfortunately, many people associate a Tarangire safari with solitude, but visiting this park during the dry season will reward you with spectacular wildlife vistas, particularly if you explore the park’s southern reaches. Tarangire is part of the well-known northern safari circuit and should be explored in conjunction with the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK’S WEATHER AND CLIMATE

The climate in Tarangire national park is pleasant and temperate. The “ long rains” (March to May) and the “ short rains” (November to December) are the two wet seasons. It usually rains in the afternoon and only very rarely throughout the day. It rarely gets too hot, but it does become chilly in the evenings and mornings. Warm clothing is advised for early morning game drives.

June, July, August, September, and October are the dry months. The temperature in the afternoon is 26°C (79°F).The days are clear and the sky is tranquil. It cools down at night, with temperatures around 14 °C (57 °F).

After the brief rains of January and February, there is a dry spell. It’s tough to anticipate the exact timing. March, April, and May: “Long rains” – Rain falls on most days, but it rarely showers all day. Cloudy skies are a common occurrence. Cold fronts are typical in April and May, causing temperatures to drop significantly.

LOCATION OF TARANGIRE

safari tanzanie tarangire

The park is also situated between the Maasai Steppe meadows to the south-east and the Great Rift Valley lakes to the north and west. The permanent River Tarangire, located in the northern portion of Tarangire, is recognized as the park’s lifeline, especially during the dry season when most of the region is completely dry.

VEGETATION IN TARANGIRE

The permanent Tarangire River is the most prominent feature here, and the park was named for it. There are also large marshes that feed off several of its tributaries; however, these are normally dry for most of the year but become impassable during the rainy season. The Tarangire park is usually very dry, even drier than the Serengeti, but its vegetation is much more green, especially with lots of elephant grass, vast areas of mixed acacia woodlands, and some of the wonderful aquatic forest ribbons, not to mention the giant baobab tree , which can live up to 600 years and store between 300 and 900 liters of water.

Game drives

safari tanzanie tarangire

During morning game drives, tourists see various wildlife species which are very active at this time of day such as the elephants, giraffes, buffalos cheetahs, zebras, elands, waterbucks, impalas, wildebeests, hartebeest among others.

Afternoon or evening game drives also take place in Tarangire national park and it involves exploring the national park in search of the different wildlife species although the wildlife species many not be seen as many in number as compared to wildlife sightings during morning game drives.

Tourists can also engage in full day game drives as they experience wildlife viewing in the national park. This form of game drive involves driving around the national park and seeing its different attractions and searching for various wildlife species throughout the day starting in the morning.

Bird watching

Bird watching is another activity which tourists can engage in during their safaris to Tarangire national park. There are various habitats for the different bird species which can be seen in the national park and this destination has about a third of the bird species in Tanzania .

The drier parts of the national park are a good location to see birds like ostriches, kori bustards, hornbills. Other bird species which can be seen in Tarangire national park include rufous tailed weavers, ashy starlings, and yellow collared lovebirds.

Migrant bird species in this national park can be seen around the swampy floodplains during birding excursions and they include hornbills, brown parrots, yellow necked spur fowls, guinea fowls, crested francolins, lilac breasted rollers, barbets, striped swallows, starlings, vultures, falcons, hammerkops, plovers and many others.

Tourists also get to experience the breathtaking scenery during their nature walks and also enjoy close encounters with wildlife species such as zebras, waterbucks, impalas, elephants as well as bird species like ostriches.

Cultural visits

A cultural visit is an amazing way to get to know more about the way of life of the local community through interactions between the locals and the tourists. The Maasai interact with the tourists as they get to know about the nomadic way of life and also engage in various activities such as traditional dance performances, visiting the “manyattas” which are the traditional homesteads of the Maasai.

The Maasai are also known for their jewelry such as beaded necklaces, earrings, anklets made in different colors and patterns. The dress code of the Maasai also consists of “shukas” which are worn by the men as well as sandals and belts made by the local community.

These local arts and crafts made by the Maasai people supplement the income of the Maasai who are known to also benefit from their livestock such as cattle, goats and sheep that are kept in kraals surrounded with thorns to protect the livestock.

Each of the rooms is worth a mention in and of itself. They are well developed and managed in a way that you never fail to excite, having been carefully created within the branches of one of the indigenous baobabs or mahoganies. They’ve also been tastefully designed, with private balconies, open baths, and comfortable mattresses that look out onto the African sunrise.

safari tanzanie tarangire

This permanent tented lodge is nestled within a private reserve along the northern edge of Tarangire National Park and provides travellers with a non-restricted safari experience with plenty of comfort and charm. It has six luxuriously appointed tented bedrooms, each with a large private veranda from which guests can take in the surrounding countryside.

Swala Safari Camp

safari tanzanie tarangire

Swala is located in the park’s south-western corner, adjacent to Gursi Swamp, and is perhaps as far away from contemporary life as one can get in northern Tanzania these days. This is a zone where you will only see the property’s vehicles and nothing else. Silali Swamp, which offers superb game viewing, is only an hour away. As described above, the rooms are of a fair size and are built on a permanent plinth with a verandah and a large tent. The rooms provide a welcome and comfortable respite from the day’s events, as well as an excellent position to watch what’s going on down at the watering hole in the heat of the day.

I see that Tarangire Safari Lodge is famous in TA community but I saw some reviews saying that it's a bit rundown and food gave people stomach aches. Still TSL is in consideration along with Simba lodge and Nimala Lodge but not married to just these options. Really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

Tarangire safari lodge overlooking Tarangire River with great view

Lemala mpingo Lodge also with great view top luxury within Tarangire national Park for accommodation

Ndovu tented Lodge with perfect setting within baobab trees

safari tanzanie tarangire

I've stayed numerous times at Tarangire Safari Lodge. Yes, it needs upgrading, the tents are on the smaller side and they are close together, but that view... I've always enjoyed the food there and not read bad reviews about that.

I have stayed at Mpingo Ridge (Lemala) which was pretty amazing. I stayed in low season and I was the only guest. It also has incredible views.

Ndovu is somewhere I'm interested to try. I work for an Australian safari company and we use this a lot in our proposals. Our clients are always happy with it.

@noxpert, Lokisale is inside the park and not in Lokisale district. ☺️https://www.topguidesbushcamps.com/our-camps#lolkisale

Olkeri Camp is in the Randilen Wilderness Management Area.

@tanzatr the 3 camps (Tarangire Safari (TSL) / Ndovu / Mpingo) are very different from each other.

> Convenient location - they are all in a convenient location to see plenty of wildlife.

> Comfort:

- TSL (budget) will have all the simple luxuries and no frills. Food will be buffet.

- Ndovu (mid range) will be a step up with more spacious rooms, amenities like a pool etc

- Mpingo (luxury) is a further step up with plated meals, beautiful views from the ridge, attention to detail on rooms

> Chance to see elephants around - all have a high chance of elephants in proximity.

Edward - Pristine Trails Adventures & Safaris

For a comfortable yet wildlife-rich experience in Tarangire, consider Oliver's Camp. It offers a balance between luxury and immersion in nature, with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Another option is Tarangire Treetops, known for its unique treehouse-style accommodations and wildlife sightings. Both options provide a memorable safari experience without the ultra-luxury price tag.

AfricanMecca's professionalism and care understands that what distinguishes Africa is its authenticity, the land, people and wildlife who do not share our world of fashion and fanfare that distinguish so many travel companies today.

When visiting Tarangire National Park, we recommend combining it with your Northern Tanzania safari to Lake Manyara , Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti ( wildebeest migration ). End your trip with a Swahili cultural tour and beach holiday in Zanzibar . You may optionally extend out to offbeat parks in Southern and Western Tanzania such as Nyerere (Selous) , Ruaha or Katavi ending with a chimpanzee trekking safari at Gombe or Mahale by the relaxing Lake Tanganyika .

  • Family Safari Escapes: Discovering the Best National Parks in Tanzania

Planning a Family Escapade in Tanzania — A vast country, much like the vastness of its national parks.

Moreover, it is a top destination for incredible family safaris. Where families can enjoy the thrill of adventure and become one with nature & wildlife, the different regions will offer you as many surprises as each other.

During your family trip to Tanzania, you have a golden chance to immerse in the beauty of the wild and forge lasting connections with the natural world. How exciting is that?

The Marvels of Tanzania’s National Parks:

Few places can offer such varied and intensely beautiful scenery as Tanzania’s National Parks. Tanzania has 22 national parks managed by TANAPA(Tanzania National Parks Authority), including renowned names like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, harboring species from African elephants to elusive leopards and giraffes.

These parks are wildlife sanctuaries that significantly conserve the country’s rich biodiversity, containing more than 20% of Africa’s large mammal population.

Also contributing to Tanzania’s economy through eco-tourism by attracting global visitors to an annual spectacle involving millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other animals migrating journeying across the plains, sustaining a delicate balance of predator-prey life chain and serving as a natural marvel.

Can’t read now? Pin for later!

Navigating Family Safari Planning:

Tarangire national park , serengeti national park, ngorongoro conservation area, ruaha national park, selous game reserve, mount kilimanjaro national park, faqs about tanzania and its national parks.

Ensuring everything goes smoothly for a successful family adventure where everyone has a fantastic time.

But how do you make it awesome?

First, consider when you want to go on your safari adventure. You’ll want to aim for the dry seasons, usually between June & October or from December to Feb. During these times, the weather is just right, and the animals are near water sources, making it easier to spot them.

Now, about the weather in the big parks up north, like Serengeti, Tarangire, and Manyara have a warm high-altitude climate about 1,500 meters above sea level. Hence, it’s pretty warm but not too hot. Jan, Feb, and March are the hottest months which could be perfect if you see animals in action during the warmer times. But watch out for April – it’s the rainiest month. On the flip side, August is the driest.

So we’ve got the timing down. Let’s move on to something more important: keeping everyone healthy and comfy. You’ll want to sort out your transportation and make sure you’ve got any needed health precautions covered. This might include vaccinations or medications to stay safe and sound during your adventure.

And speaking of adventure, you’ll want to ensure you’ve got the right tour operator and safari guide to make your experience top-notch. Safari companies are experts at ensuring families like yours have a fantastic time. They know how to plan things just right so that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, has a blast and creates memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Tanzania’s Best National Parks For Family Safaris

Tarangire is recognizable because it is made up of forests of acacias and giant baobabs, with huge areas of marshland. During the dry season, you can admire beautiful landscapes. The land is red and dusty & the grass is parched and yellow, and the Tarangire River is very narrow.

On the contrary, the plains are green during the rainy season, with an imposing river and many animals regaining their strength.

This park’s no joke – it’s 2,600 square kilometers of animal-packed adventure, especially between August and January. And here’s the scoop: Tarangire is the place to be if you’re looking for critters that are a bit trickier to find in other northern parks.

Come June, this place will become the hangout spot for elks, oryxes, elephants, wildebeests, and zebras. They all gather around the river and the marshes to quench their thirst. And you won’t believe your eyes when you see elephants digging for water underground, using their hefty paws! It’s quite a sight to see!

Let’s get one fact straight: Serengeti’s wet season means fewer animals, except in the south, where the real action happens.

Driving in from Ngorongoro, it’s like stepping into a grassy savannah sprinkled with kopjes – those fancy granite rock formations. Venture a bit, and you’ll hit greener acacia savannah. Head north, and it’s all about hills. On the flip side, the Western Corridor, crisscrossed by rivers, spreads out to Lake Victoria.

May to June is a show-stopping period. That’s when the jaw-dropping wildebeest migration hits the stage. Imagine over a million of these creatures embarking on a great migration over 800 km from Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara , perfectly in tune with the rain’s rhythm. A staggering 2 million wildebeests and 300,000 zebras gather for a parade, making herds that stretch as far as 40 km.

Serengeti isn’t just a park; it’s a world-class zoo sprawled over 14,763 km² and home to Big 5 “Lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, and buffaloes”.

Ngorongoro is known for its volcano, gigantic crater, and thriving wildlife scene. The Ngorongoro Crater Protected Area is over 2 million years old and around 20 km in diameter. Also, the historic Olduvai Gorge is just 40km from the crater, where traces of humanity’s earliest days are found.

In Ngorongoro, prepare for a rich and diverse range of creatures. The Big 5, antelopes, cheetahs, and endangered black rhino – we’re talking around 30,000 animals. And also have over 400 bird species, including the elegant pink flamingos. Keep your eyes open for jackals, hyenas, and cheetahs.

And if you plan a family safari around July-August, you’ll enjoy some cool temperatures on the caldera’s edges. But remember, Ngorongoro is not only just a crater; it’s part of the grand Ngorongoro Protected Area, And it’s quite the tourism hub, hosting around 400,000 visitors annually.

The Ruaha River sustains the diverse animal community in Ruaha Park, which flows through its heart. This thriving community includes African elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and the world’s third-largest population of wild dogs.

Ruaha is a hidden gem, not famous like other parks, but its reputation is rising. It remains a safari secret. You won’t have to battle huge crowds here, even during the peak/high season. Plus, it’s budget-friendly compared to more popular parks like the Serengeti.

And here you can also go for the walking safaris. But remember minimum age required for a walking safari is 16.

Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa’s largest national park.

You can witness the unusual annual elephant migration as thousands of these majestic elephants cross the river. Also, you can take part in walking safaris, spot African wild dogs, and go on Elephant Migration Boat Safaris for memorable adventures.

Plan your visit between late June and October for prime wildlife viewing or from November to March to enjoy bird watching. Wildlife in the park ranges from elephants, African wild dogs, sables, kudus, &  waterbucks to hippos and crocodiles.

Nyerere National Park is a haven of nature and offers easy access to attractions like Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam. It’s an excellent destination for an incredible adventure.

Mount Kilimanjaro National Park stands as a remarkable destination for an unforgettable family safari. Encompassing an expansive area of approximately 755 square miles, the park in Northeastern Tanzania shares a border with Kenya.

The park’s star attraction, Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Known as the rooftop of Africa, it is the highest mountain (freestanding) in the world. Families need not be seasoned climbers to experience its splendor. Guided walks along various trails allow all family members to soak in the breathtaking scenery and the stunning views of the surrounding plains.

Besides its majestic mountain, the national park boasts a diverse array of animal species. Families can catch glimpses of elusive leopards, playful colobus monkeys, as well as antelopes, gazelles, lions, rhinos, and elephants.

Bird enthusiasts will be captivated by the dazzling spectacle of migratory birds, their vibrant colors brightening the park. Non-migratory species, including soaring eagles and graceful flamingos, grace the skies around Kilimanjaro, creating a spectacle that is truly unique.

The park is also home to a variety of activities and attractions. While some trails are designed for more experienced hikers, others are tailored to casual walkers or wheelchair access. Families can explore an array of caves, visit traditional villages, enjoy cultural tours, or just relax in one of the many lodges located within the park.

Tanzania is home to 22 national parks. Each park offers visitors a chance to experience the country’s unique wildlife, landscapes, and culture. The most famous of all the parks is Kilimanjaro National Park – famed for its iconic mountain peak – while others such as Serengeti National Park are renowned for their vast savannah plains and provide one of the best opportunities for game viewing.

The beauty of Tanzania’s parks is hard to measure. Each park has something unique to offer and is worth exploring. However, many visitors cite Serengeti National Park as the most beautiful. It is renowned for its breathtaking views, abundant wildlife, and wide-open plains.

Visitors can also explore Tarangire National Park for its acacia-filled savannah and incredible bird watching. Another popular destination is Selous Game Reserve, which is home to the world’s largest population of African elephants. Ultimately, visitors should explore each park for themselves to determine what makes it most beautiful.

The largest national park in Tanzania is Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve. Spanning over 55,000 square kilometers (21,000 sq mi), it is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa and one of the largest unfenced reserves in the world.

The park is known for its abundant African wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, antelope, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and more. Nyerere National Park offers a unique experience for visitors, where they can immerse themselves in the untouched African bush.

The least visited national park in Tanzania is Ruaha National Park. Located in south-central Tanzania, Ruaha is a relatively remote and untouched park that offers visitors an opportunity to explore the vast wilderness of East Africa.

The best time to travel to Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. During this period, temperatures are mild and the chances of rain are low, making it perfect for safaris and exploring the country’s national parks.

The warmest months are December through February, but these can also be very wet and humid. April and May are also good months to visit, since temperatures are more moderate.

The best time of year to go on safari in Tanzania is during the dry season, which typically runs from late June through October. This period offers the best combination of ideal weather conditions and prime game viewing opportunities. Days are hot but not too humid, while evenings can be cool.

Wildlife sightings are more frequent during this period due to less vegetation cover and the animals coming to the waterholes more often. Additionally, the dry season coincides with calving season for antelope, which makes it a great time to view baby wildebeests and zebras!

Tanzania is a very popular and sought-after destination for tourists due to its rich history, diverse culture, stunning landscapes, and unparalleled wildlife. It is home to 22 national parks and numerous game reserves that are filled with an amazing array of animals such as lions, elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, cheetahs,  and more.

The country also boasts some of the world’s highest mountain peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest peak. Additionally, Tanzania is renowned for its welcoming people and vibrant cultures. From traditional Swahili villages to bustling cities like Dar es Salaam, there is something here for everyone!

It really depends on what you want to do and see! If you’re just looking for a quick getaway, then three to five days will give you enough time to explore the country’s main attractions. However, if you’d like to go on safari, or dive deep into its history and culture, then seven days or longer is recommended. There’s so much to discover and experience in Tanzania, you won’t want your time there to end!
