Which wineries can I visit?

Sounds Connection works closely with a wide range of top Marlborough wineries – large and small, old and new. We can tailor the tour to accommodate your tastes or your favourite wineries – or we can take the pressure off and decide for you!

How old is the Marlborough wine industry?

The first grapes were planted by Scotsman David Herd in 1873 but it was not until 1973 that the first commercial planting began. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc first hit the headlines in the late 1980s – and now Marlborough produces around 3/4 of New Zealand’s wine.

What wine varieties does Marlborough produce?

Sauvignon Blanc is still the variety Marlborough is best known for, and amounts to around 85% of the wine coming from the region. Pinot Noir is considered by many to be a rising star, and there are also a wide range of excellent Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling wines to try. There are a number of interesting new or more niche varieties becoming available too – from Grüner Veltliner (affectionately known as “Gru Vee”) to Viognier and more. In short, something for every taste. If you have a particular favourite, let us know when you’re booking and we can discuss an itinerary to suit.

Can we visit an organic, biodynamic or sustainable winery?

We are proud to say that 94% or more of New Zealand’s producing vineyard area is now Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) certified, meaning that wines are produced under sustainable, independently audited environmental programmes. If you’re interested in organic and biodynamics, we work closely with a number of wineries you might like to visit. For example Seresin Estate’s organic/biodynamic winery, Te Whare Ra (where the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and all the fruit is hand-picked and hand-sorted), and organic wineries such as Huia Vineyards, Rock Ferry Wines, Hans Herzog, to name a few! Just let us know when you’re booking and we can discuss an itinerary to suit.

I don’t have much time. Can I take a quick tour of Marlborough wineries?

Definitely! Sounds Connection can collect you and drop you off at the airport, ferry terminal or your accommodation and take you on one of our Half Day Wine Tours – we can customise a tour to suit you and whatever time you have available.

What wine-related events are there in Marlborough?

The annual Marlborough Wine Festival is one not to miss! New Zealand’s first and longest running wine festival, it is held in early February in one of the region’s oldest vineyards, Brancott Vineyard, and is a celebration of world-class wine and the very best of local cuisine. Demonstrations by celebrity chefs, tutorials by acclaimed local winemakers, a fashion competition, and music by New Zealand’s best make it a great event to plan a weekend or longer break around. You might even like to create your own little event around special days on the wine calendar. For example, for International Sauvignon Blanc Day (in May) we can take you on a special tour to taste the flagship ‘Savvy’ at some of our region’s beautiful wineries.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring your camera – there are photo opportunities everywhere you look! You may wish to bring a sunhat and sunscreen too, for example in case you want to eat al fresco at some point. Although our wineries are world class, they are not pretentious, so smart casual attire is fine – though if you want to wear a tuxedo, by all means, feel free!

What knowledge of the wine industry will my guide have?

 Our local and experienced guides have a broad range of knowledge about the Marlborough wine area and the wineries within it. From the number of wineries that Marlborough has, to how red wine and white wine is made – and so much more! 

What area will my tour cover? Is there much driving involved?

 The area that your tour will cover may vary depending on your selected tour. It may include the Koromiko Valley, the Wairau Plains (home to the majority of Marlborough’s wineries), Picton, Blenheim, Havelock and Queen Charlotte Drive

Although it’s not exactly wine, do you do craft brewery tours too?

Absolutely! Marlborough is lucky to have not only so many amazing wineries but also a couple of great local breweries. We are more than happy to include a visit to a brewery on our Private Tour options or ask your guide if it can be included on your tour. Get in touch with us and we can organise a great craft brewery experience for you.

We'll visit those small wineries that are off the beaten track, wineries you probably have not heard of but offer arguably some of the best wine in the region.

On the full day tours, we will visit a total of 6 cellar doors and stop for a lunch break at one of the best restaurants in Marlborough.

On the half day tours, we will visit a total of 4 cellar doors but will not stop for lunch. It is highly recommended that you have lunch before starting the tour.

A visit of the Vines Village for a Gin or Whiskey & Cheese tasting and a cheeky chocolate indulgence at the Makana Chocolate factory are optional stops on this tour.

This tour will take you to our superb Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre has combined a rare collection of WW1 and WW2 aircraft with creative display techniques to present a remarkable experience that captures the imagination. Omaka is a world-class destination for appreciating historic aircraft and sharing the stories of the men and women behind the machines.

Once the two parts of the museum have been completed, we will visit three wineries and indulge in some of the best wines that Marlborough has to offer.

1H will be allocated for lunch (cost not included).

This is a full day tour, designed for all of you that want to learn about and taste some of our region's best local products. This tour includes a couple of wine tasting at local wineries, visit to the Cranky Pantry where you will indulge in some locally made cheeses. We will travel to the Vines Village to taste some local honey and fudge, and of course a cheeky stop at the famous Makana Chocolate Factory on the way back to Blenheim, with our last stop being at Scotch Wine Bar for a Greenshell Mussel tasting. Gin tasting at the Gin Shack can be added to this tour if desired.

FULL DAY TOUR     $550/Adult (2 to 4 people max)

picton shore excursions

Whether you enjoy a scenic drive, a visit to our superb Omaka Aviation Museum, cheese tasting or simply want us to design a wine tour for you, on Shore Excursions, you will experience the best that Marlborough has to offer based of your preferences and the time available to you.

Here are some of the stops we can make on this tour:

- Wine Tasting at a couple (or more) Marlborough cellar doors of your choice (allow 45min per tasting)

- Visit to our world-class Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre  (allow 1H30)

- Drive to Havelock, Greenshell Mussels capital of the world, and have lunch at one of the local restaurants. This includes a drive back to Picton via the scenic Queen Charlotte Drive (allow 2H30)

- Scenic drive around the Marlborough Region with plenty of lookout stops for photos.

- For shorter excursion, Vines Village is a great stop, as it offers a range of activities such as coffee or lunch at Vines Café, wine tasting at Whitehaven, whiskey & cheese tasting at Cheese & Cheers, gin tasting at the Gin Shack and even the beautiful Quilters Barn for all of you fans of haberdashery.

Rescheduling a booking in lieu of cancellation within 48 hours of the original booking time will be processed without a penalty fee.

Marlborough Wine Tours was the original wine tour company in Marlborough and was established in 1999. Dean and Jess took the business on in December 2017 and have really enjoying showing our mainly international visitors the region.  Post Covid we have experienced a real upturn in the numbers of domestic tourists, so it’s been fantastic to show New Zealanders as well as international travellers the best Marlborough has to offer.

We are a small family run business, post Covid Dean is now working outside the business and Jess runs the business with a small dedicated team of tour guides who make our company and the Marlborough region proud. Aleisha (5 yrs old) occasionally comes for a ride on our transfers.

We have aimed our business at those who already love wine or who are wanting to start their wine journey, ensuring they have a fun day exploring Marlborough cellar doors, and learn about the processes that go into making New Zealand’s best wines.

Meet our team of tour guides who have been with us for several years.  They come from diverse backgrounds and they are passionate about what they do. Whether it’s a love of wine or people they will ensure you have a great day out in Marlborough.

Favorite Wine: Pinot Noir

After 28 years service in the Royal New Zealand Navy a move to Marlborough and the relaxing lifestyle was well deserved. Dean and Jess took over Marlborough Wine Tours to enjoy the best of what the Marlborough lifestyle has to offer. is not a wine snob – any wine will do to enjoy with great company, food and entertainment.

In the post covid world Dean is taking a break from wine tours and is working with Interislander.  He occasionally gets out on the road and really loves showing our international visitors a great day out in Marlborough.

“Dean gave us a tour of 4 wineries, all of very different character. He was highly knowledgeable and very tuned to our desires. We wanted to taste NZ wines which were not so common and yet were highly acclaimed by wine drinkers. The whole event was well managed, the tastings were extensive and the lunch was fabulous. i am sure I should have forgotten more due to the consumption of lovely wine but there were highlights which I will take away and be able to enjoy for years. A fabulous day out thanks, in no small measure, to Dean’s competence and character.”

Jess has lived in Marlborough for 9 years with husband Dean and 5.5 year old Aleisha.  After 20 years in the Navy the change of lifestyle in Marlborough was well deserved.  These days your more likely to meet Jess via email or phone as it’s pretty busy running the behind the scenes logistics. When Jess is out on the road she really loves hosting people from all over the world and ensuring that they have a great day out in Marlborough. Not much of a wine drinker but enjoys the odd tipple of dessert wine.

Favourite Wine – has to be Pinot Gris

Phil joined our team in December 2017 when we first brought the business. He’s a true blue Marlboroughian and has a vast knowledge of the history of the area which he will love to share with his clients along the way. With his own unique sense of humour and great way with people Phil always gets great reviews from his clients.

In the post covid world Phil has been running the majority of our tours as Dean has returned to other work whilst the borders are closed. Phil continues to receive fantastic reviews from all our lovely Kiwi visitors.

Nic joined the MWT team in Sep 18 and came to us form a background of tour guiding in the Taupo region. She’s a great asset to the team and just loves her wines! All of them! In the post covid era Nic is continuing to fly the MWT flag and as summer approaches will be on the road running tours as our number of Kiwi tourists increases every week.

Keith joined our team in 2018. He hails from Scotland originally but is married to a local Marlborough lady and has settled here in Blenheim. He and his partner Georgina own Nutt Ranch – you will often see them selling their hazelnut products at the local farmers market, and also recently put in a vineyard on their property and had their first harvest.

Keith’s favourite white wine obviously has to be Framingham 2019 Sauvignon Blanc and not just because it has grapes from his first harvest in it, but because it’s a great example of the regions flagship variety. His favourite red wine would be a Georgian Saperavi. He found this one whilst touring Europe with his partner, Georgina in a Honda Stepwagn campervan. Very interesting history about Georgian wine as well for anyone who wants to do a bit of research. Keith is about to plant 50 Saperavi vines this winter to see if he can make some of his own.

“For our first trip to NZ, we only pre-booked four things, and we’re really glad that we chose this tour as our Marlborough one. The guide (Keith) was knowledgeable (bringing in family anecdotes into the chat helped to put things into perspective) and managed to bring humour into all aspects of the tour. Keith and the four well-chosen cellar doors really made the afternoon zoom by. Recommended.”

Hamish joined the team in 2022 and what a great addition he has been. With lots of local knowledge of the wine region having run several businesses and the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce during his ‘working’ life.

Sam has lived in Marlborough for 22 years with a background in high country farming and the IT industry. His favourite wine is Gibson’s Bridge Gewurtstraminer which goes beautifully with Asian food, maybe the fact that their cellar door is only a little more than 100 metres away from his home is the reason why. Having a wife that has worked in a number of cellar doors over the years means he’s been lucky to try all sorts of different wines. Marlborough is well known for its Sauvignon Blanc but their are many other varieties being grown in small amounts that make delicious wine.

Gavin moved to Marlborough in 2019 and worked for Marlborough Wine Tours until Covid put a spanner in the works.  For the last couple of years he’s been working a a cellar host at Saint Clair Vineyard Kitchen but we are pleased to have him rejoining our small team for the 23/24 summer.

As responsible business owners we believe it is important to support local charities and events in our region. We have provided donations or tour vouchers to many oranisations over the last few years including Fostering Kids NZ and the Going Bananas show for children with brain injuries. The native people of New Zealand are the Maori and they have a traditional value called Manaakitanga – this loosely translate to mean ‘hospitality’. Had an amazing experience with Na Clachan recently on their half day wine tour. Chris and Toni were fantastic guides, really knowledgeable and friendly, and were able to customize the wineries we visited based on our tastes. They definitely know the region and can customize the tour. We had a great time and learned so much about the region and wine in general. We came in winter and had amazing sunny weather with the bonus of no crowds in any of the cellar doors. I definitely recommend them if you're looking for a tour in the area.

We took a tour in December 2022. Chris helped us set it up by going through our preferences and making suggestions for an itinerary. Bill, our driver, was waiting for us with a sign with our name. The car was spacious and comfortable. Bill was intelligent and funny and helped us learn more about what we were tasting. The suggested wineries were exactly what we were looking for (with a bonus fourth tasting at lunch). An absolutely perfect day in New Zealand wine country!

Fabulous full day tour with 3 other couples. Bill, our driver and guide was very friendly and knowledgeable . The 5 vineyards we visited were all different from each other and they all knew there products well. Lunch at St Claire was stunning. Bill went the extra mile so we could stop off to pick up pizza on the way back to our accommodation. We would highly recommend Na Clachan Wine Tours.

My partner and I had an excellent afternoon wine tour with Chris, who took us to 4 brilliant vineyards to taste a wide variety of wines! Chris was very knowledgeable about both wine and the Blenheim area, and is clearly very well-respected by the vineyard staff. Chris does such an incredible wine tour, I can't imagine anyone not having a good time. He made an entirely customised experience for us by asking what we liked, what we wanted to get out of the tour and also asking if we're open to learning more. Chris KNOWS the region, he knows the wines, the vintages, the vineyards and the staff at the wineries, so everyone is so patient and great that you come into contact with. Having done a few wine tours, this one wise by far the most personalised, the most informative, and the most VIP experience we've had. A lovely day from pick up to drop off,we were fortunate to have a neat bunch of people from all over the country on our tour and it went really well. Would recommend Chris who was our friendly, interesting,knowledgeable and informative guide today. He stood in for our original guide who was sick and did a great job. We visited 4 cellar doors and tried some fabulous wines whilst enjoying the atmosphere of each place and great conversation. We had a fantastic day on the bikes visiting wineries, Andy gave us a perfect detailed description of the map and a low down on all the wineries, and he even picked us up from the airport and stored our luggage all day. 10/10 value for money, and comfortable bikes!

Our biking guides and tastings at the wineries were perfect! Nice to have a van following in case anyone tired or tasted too much. Loved the wineries and the people who run them, a great selection and so easy to bike to. Highly recommend this for adults who enjoy wines and being outdoors. This was an excursion for us on a cruise.

Enjoyed a wonderful day on the bike cycling the back lanes and country roads to 5 or so wineries. Many lunch options and/or places to sit down and soak up the views, the wine and enjoy local cheese plates. Pick-up and drop off to Blenheim motel allowed for ample sampling to take place plus suggestions and tour map made for a relaxing day. Great way to see the area and taste the produce.
