Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

His former home – which he lived in for less than 10 years, but owned until his death in 1961 – is located in Old Town and is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Literature buffs take note: Hemingway penned parts of some of his most famous works, including "A Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," in this very residence. The grand house itself is interesting, as it was one of the first in Key West to have indoor plumbing and a pool. Inside, the rooms contain memorabilia about Hemingway's life and work.

Harry S. Truman Little White House Harry S. Truman Little White House

Originally built by the U.S. Navy in 1890, the Little White House served as naval command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, and also played roles in both World Wars and the Cold War. From 1946 through 1952, President Harry Truman used this house as his winter vacation home and because he spent 175 days of his presidency here, it became known as the Little White House. The name is fitting: Since Truman's days, many other presidents have also vacationed here, including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Today, the Little White House has been restored and turned into a museum. Exhibits document Key West's role in naval conflicts, as well as the house's history – the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine were both discussed here.

Recent travelers highly recommend a visit to the Little White House, especially for self-identified history buffs. The guides and exhibits both earn high marks from reviewers. The only gripe among recent visitors concerned the admission cost, which some felt was too high for a one-hour experience.

If you can fend off the claustrophobia and don't mind heights, the climb up the tiny and constricting 88 spiral steps to the top of the Key West Lighthouse is worth it for the views, say recent visitors. Once you're up there though, be patient: According to past travelers, the viewing balcony at the top is very narrow. After taking in the views, take a look around the keeper's quarters, which have been around since 1887. The cozy house is now a museum that surveys the history of lighthouses in the Keys, with photographs and various artifacts. The gift shop is also a great place to find regional art.

One ticket gets you access to both the lighthouse and the museum. Admission for adults costs $17; kids ages 7 to 18 get in for $9, while children younger than 7 can enter for free. Discounts are available when you purchase your tickets online. Visitors are divided on whether the admission price is worth the local history provided in the museum, but most agree that the panoramic views seen from the top of the lighthouse are unbeatable. The lighthouse and museum are open daily (except Christmas) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Situated across the street from the  Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , you can easily visit both sites in one day. Key West Aquarium Key West Aquarium

The Key West Aquarium is proof that good things come in small packages. More small-scale than your typical aquarium, this indoor-outdoor attraction is a historic facility that first opened in 1935. Although it might be lacking in elaborate exhibits, this one-story aquarium still has a good range of creatures for the entire family to see. Take your kids to the touch pools to see if a sea cucumber is as slimy as it looks. The museum also hosts several tours and presentations throughout the day. If you're lucky, you may get to feed a gentle nurse shark if you attend the shark presentation.

Higgs Beach Higgs Beach free

Located on the south side of the island along the Atlantic Ocean, Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach Park encompasses 16.5 acres of oceanfront, two piers (one on each end), a Civil War-era fort and the site of what's believed to be the only known African refugee cemetery in the U.S. Beachgoers can enjoy a day of swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or paddle boarding in the ocean, plus land activities ranging from sunbathing to beach volleyball, tennis and pickleball.

Higgs Beach is known for its fine, white sand and shallow water, making it an ideal beach for families with small children. However, when you first enter the water, the sand can be rocky, recent travelers warn, so bring water shoes. You can avoid the rocks entirely by walking down the Reynolds Street Pier past the rocky shore to a ladder, where you can step down into the water. Beach chairs and umbrella rentals are available, or you can set up shop at one of several tiki huts, permanent wooden umbrellas, or picnic tables with barbecues. The park also offers visitors a bike path, a children's playground, a dog park, plus public restrooms and showers.

Key West Cemetery Key West Cemetery free

U.S. News Insider Tip: For more of the macabre, take an evening Ghosts & Gravestones tour to learn about the spooky tales of other Key West sites, where you'll meet the legendary (but haunted) Robert the Doll. – Lyssa Goldberg

Located in Old Town, the Key West Cemetery has been around since 1847 and is well worth at least a walk-through. The quirkiness of the city's residents extends even to the grave. Tombstones in this 19-acre cemetery don't bear the typical inscriptions. Instead, you'll find epitaphs that reflect the island's casual lifestyle. Some of the more well-known inscriptions include "I told you I was sick" and "I'm just resting my eyes." One tombstone for a captain is actually topped with a ship's mast. Notable Conchs buried here include Ellen Mallory, whose name you'll recognize from Mallory Square ; William Curry, Florida's first millionaire; and "Sloppy" Joe Russell, who was Ernest Hemingway's fishing guide and a bartender at the famed Sloppy Joe's bar on Duval Street .

Key West First Legal Rum Distillery Key West First Legal Rum Distillery free

Key West's First Legal Rum Distillery opened its doors in 2012 and is the first since the end of Prohibition. Here, visitors can tour a working rum distillery, learn how to make a killer mojito or try a free sample of the establishment's specialty white and dark rums, which are made with Florida cane sugar and infused with flavors of coconut, vanilla creme brulee and Key lime. The distillery also sells flasks, shot glasses and rum cake.

Past visitors praised the distillery's delicious drinks and informative staff members, but noted that the tour was limited to one room. Even so, many recommended visiting for the wide selection of rums and rum drinks alone (including piña coladas).

Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center free

With more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery center seeks to inspire visitors to preserve the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys and enjoy this natural resource responsibly. Here, guests can learn about the native plants and animals of the Florida Keys through exhibits highlighting the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, four national wildlife refuges and three national parks, including Dry Tortugas, which is on an island about 70 miles from Key West.

Visitors can watch a 20-minute movie about the Keys' fragile ecosystems and then explore the center on a self-paced tour. Staff and volunteers are also on-site to answer questions. Notable exhibits include a replica of NOAA's Aquarius, the only underwater ocean laboratory in the world, and a spotlight on the long maritime history of shipwrecks inside the sanctuary's waters. After completing renovations in late 2022, there are even more hands-on activities, such as a mangrove exhibit where guests can play animal noises and guess which animal made the sound, an area with microscopes so you can watch coral close-up, and a paddleboard photo-op that looks like you’re paddling through the mangroves. The center has been certified by KultureCity as a sensory inclusive facility for people with sensory sensitivities; it offers a separate room where people can take a break from the exhibits. Sensory kits are also available.

How To Visit The Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

It’s no secret that vagabonds and artists have been in  Key West, Florida , for decades, but did you know that one famous US President also couldn’t resist the island’s charm?

Or maybe it was the Conch Fritters, but either way — it’s true! Harry S. Truman loved Key West so much that he made his winter home there. Today, visitors flock to the Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West to walk a little in this well-known man’s shoes!

He made a total of 11 trips to this coastal retreat himself, and did you know that the  Truman Little White House  is still a functioning retreat for US Presidents?

It had played host to six over the years, including John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. And if that’s not even, it even hosted Thomas Edison for an extended stay during World War I.

Harry S. Truman's Little White House in Key West, Florida

As Florida’s only presidential museum, the  Harry S. Truman Little White House  is a place you must visit at least once! Nestled in the Truman Annex on the island’s western side, this gem could be easily missed if you walked past the Presidential gates on Whitehead Street.

But, when you do, you are greeted by Bougainville-draped white picket fences and charming homes. After turning a corner onto Front Street, you spot the Little White House, adorned in red, white, and blue, of course.

I always joke that my favorite places are the ones where the Bougainvillea grows wild. And Key West has no shortage of my favorite blooms!

History of the Truman Little White House

Like  Hemingway’s Key West House , the Truman Little White House also stood long before Truman set foot inside. It was constructed over 50 years prior, back in 1890, and was part of the naval officer housing. In fact, President William Howard Taft stayed there back in 1912, long before Harry S. Truman.

But, it was Truman who fell hard for this coastal retreat. He spent a total of 175 days of his presidency here between 1946 and 1952, and with that, it became known as the Truman Little White House. You can view all of the logs from his trips here; they are fascinating!

As mentioned above, it is still an active presidential retreat. It has hosted presidents and dignitaries alike since Truman’s time here. The tour does not go through a portion of the home, as that section is where they would stay if they choose to pay Key West and the Little White Houe a visit!

Visiting the Little White House in Key West

Centrally located in the northwest portion of the island and only a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of Duval Street and Sloppy Joes, you must know what you are looking for, or you could easily miss Truman’s Little White House!

Once you arrive, a canopy is set up where you can buy tour tickets or redeem your online ticket.

Location, Hours, and Admission

Harry S. Truman Little White House is located at 111 Front Street, Key West, Florida, and is open 365 days a year – including all holidays, from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm. The last tour starts at 4:00 pm.

You can click here to purchase tickets to the Truman Little White House !

Old Town Trolley Tour Stop: Truman’s White House

If you are touring Key West on the famous

Old Town Trolley Tour , you can get off at stop 1A to visit the Truman Little White House. It’s just a few blocks south of the train depot and near the famous Mallory Square!

You can pre-purchase your Harry S. Truman Little White House tickets. You can also book a  VIP White Glove Tour  for up to 6 people, including a ride in his 1949 presidential limousine!

The  Old Town Trolley Tour  is also a great way to see other popular Key West attractions, including the famous  Hemingway House . And while Truman’s first visit to Key West came about 15 years after Hemingway’s and several years after Hemingway left the island for Cuba, did Truman and Hemingway ever meet? They may have crossed paths on one of Hemingway’s visits back to Key West!

Truman Little White House Guided Tours

The only way that you can see inside the Truman Little White House in Key West is via a  guided tour of Truman’s Little House .

This is really to your benefit because the guides are incredibly knowledgeable and able to point out so many interesting things, but also necessary as the home houses an incredible number of artifacts – 90% original to Harry S. Truman himself!

The tour lasts approx. 30 minutes and is with a small group.

A Look Inside the Little White House in Key West, Florida

As I mentioned above, photography typically isn’t permitted while touring the Truman Little White House. However, I was given an acceptance and have some beautiful photos from my visit to share with you today!

So, I will finish up my blog post by sharing the remainder of the photos that I took, adding some commentary as I go but leaving some behind so that you can experience it in totality yourself!

And those gorgeous chairs, the poker table, and even that white chicken statue sure have some stories to tell! As the saying goes, “If only these walls could talk…”.

There is also a great little gift shop/museum that you can browse before or after your guided  Truman White House tour . And I am relatively sure that a ticket is not required to visit the gift shop.

The photos below were all taken in the small museum area accessible through the gift shop! And while it is small, there is a lot of great information that is easy to navigate through, and I learned a lot more than I expected about Harry S. Truman.

He is one president that I didn’t know a lot about. I was surprised to read that while his approval rating was low when he left office, he is now considered one of the top 6 US Presidents. This is according to a C-SPAN survey that you can  see here.

The Perfect 4 Day Key West Itinerary

We spent an amazing 4 days in Key West. Well, any time in Key West is amazing, right? The Kimpton Key West hosted us for a fun time. We explored all of their properties and tried a few new places for dinner. Along the way, I learned a few things I thought I would share about our Key West itinerary.

First off, let’s talk about planning an itinerary… do it, but don’t overdo it. Leave space in the day for random stuff. You are on vacation, after all, not every second of every day needs to be planned. Plan for an island time experience.

Below are affiliate links, which means we will earn a small commission at no extra charge to you. As always, thanks for your support.

Getting to Key West

key west airport arrival terminal

How do you get to Key West? There are really three ways… by car, by plane and by ferry.

A lot of airlines now offer direct flights into Key West. Or, you can fly into Miami International Airport and experience the Key West Road trip. If you have never done this, I would plan it at least once. Plan to make stops along the way. Check out the Everglades National Park, Key Largo, and other cool spots along the overseas highway. Did you know there are 11 National Parks in Florida? Two can be found in the Keys (the Everglades and the Dry Tortugas)

The Ultimate Road Trip from Miami to Key West

Along the Overseas Highway, you will notice everything is marked by mileage, with Mile Marker Zero being in Key West.

Rather take a ferry? Check out the Key West Express.

So… with the ground rules set… let’s see how to explore Key West, enjoy some downtime, AND have an amazing time in just 4 days.

The Beginning

Ok.. we planned this on purpose, we arrived very early in Key West. This meant we traveled with very little sleep, but that’s ok.

Side note, I booked our plane tickets directly with the airline. So, they set the schedule, departure/arrivals, and time for the layover. BUT, their itinerary only allowed for 25 minutes from touchdown to take off on our layover down. Might work, if you aren’t 10 minutes late leaving …. but, we managed to make the connecting flight, so all good. But, next time, I will ensure we have plenty of time between connections.

We always travel with carry-on only. It just makes the trip that much easier. Plus, for 4 days… you really don’t need that much stuff. Once we land it’s straight to the hotel. For this visit, we headed to Winslow’s Bungalows. This Kimpton property is just amazing.

Winslow’s Bungalows

Located at 725 Truman Ave, you are fairly close to everything. If you get tired of walking you can always take an Uber or the free Duval Loop bus. If you are taking a cab from the airport to the hotel, you may want to let them know it’s the Kimpton on Truman instead of Winslow’s Bungalows. The reason is these properties used to be part of the Historic Key West Inns, but now are part of the Kimpton family.

This property used to be the Chelsea House and Key Lime Inn. Kimpton has combined them into one property now known as Winslow’s Bungalows.

Here’s a bit of quick history about the property…..

  • It’s named after the famous painter and summer Key West resident Winslow Homer
  • Has 3 pools, an outdoor bar, and vibrant gardens
  • 85 guestrooms including 2 deluxe suites and is Kimpton’s largest Key West hotel
  • The room designs pay homage to the property’s past owners including an Army officer, an Irish steamboat Captain, and a circus performer
  • On the property is Maloney House, where the first mayor of Key West lived. He planted an amazing fruit grove that is still used by the hotel today.
  • The property has 3 stand-alone bungalows to accommodate guests wanting a bit more privacy
  • The property is very pet friendly. They offer Henry’s dog treats to their dog guests
  • If you want to try the famous Key West bagel made by Goldman’s, they are offered at breakfast (they are very very yummy)
  • Music is played at the pool bar
  • The old Blue Parrot Inn is across the street and is now part of this property. They have 11 rooms and their pool is called the serenity pool because they don’t play music and it offers a zen tranquil feeling

tour en key west

They didn’t have our room ready yet, remember we arrived early (before checkout). But, that was ok. They held our luggage so we could head off to have breakfast and a much needed cocktail to start the vacation off. Our breakfast of choice? Blue Heaven of course.

After breakfast, it was time to head back to the hotel and enjoy a bit of pool time. Best way to cool off and refresh after a day of traveling.

As you can see, our room was, perfect. Winslow’s Bungalows offers great spaces to relax and enjoy Key West. Not too far from the heart of Duval Street, this place offers three pools and an amazing pool bar.

Fully refreshed, we head out to explore. First stop… the Mile Zero sign. No vacation in Key West is complete without a picture in front of the Mile Zero sign.

Needing a place to cool off, we then headed over to the Custom House. This place offers rotating exhibits all about Key West and those who influenced Key West. Always a great stop. Some the coolest and best things can be found in their gift shop.

Now, it’s time for dinner. A favorite stop of ours is Sloppy Joe’s. I know, I know, it can be a bit touristy, but I still love this place. The food is always good, the drinks are poured strong and they offer live music. Who could ask for more?

Speaking of live music, plan a stop at the Smokin’ Tuna, one of the best places in Key West for music. They have an outdoor courtyard that offers shade and cold adult beverages.

Most of the time I suggest sunset celebration at Mallory Square, but this night, we opted for a different perspective. Sunset from the top of Schooner Wharf. This is the perfect place to see the harbor, enjoy a cold beverage and listen to live music.

Today, hubby heads off to enjoy a morning out on the water fishing. Me… well, I do what I love to do while in Key West, I head out for a morning walk. Who doesn’t love a morning walk around Key West? I love to look at the historic homes that are scattered all over this small island. It’s one of the great things about the Island, they have kept the charm and preserved its history.

Historic Walking Tour

When I get back, it’s time for breakfast. I head down this wandering path at Winslow’s and partake in their complimentary breakfast. It’s a basic continental breakfast. It’s served in the bar area. Enjoying my second (and maybe third) cup of coffee, I did a bit of work. Caught up on a few emails, and, worked on this blog post. At the bar, is a great spot to work. I don’t spend too much time working… after all, there is a lot more to see and do before Kevin returns from his fishing trip.

Kevin returned after a successful fishing trip, and we then set out for the next adventure. Kimpton Hotels hosted us for a tour of their Lighthouse property. This place is very cool Across the street from the Hemingway House, it offers a great view of the lighthouse and they have a very nice bar.

Not staying at the Lighthouse? No worries, the bar is open to the public, Plan to stop in and enjoy this place. The bartender is engaging and can mix many amazing cocktails. We had the best time trying the house specialties. We actually couldn’t decide which ones we liked best. It’s ok to like them all, right?

While in Key West, it seems to always be cocktail time. With that in mind, we had time before our dinner reservations and headed over to General Horseplay. This place is known for their cocktails and fun Happy Hour. It’s a great place to start off an evening.

For dinner… we were hosted by Poke in the Rear. Don’t overlook this place. It was, one of the best dinners we had while on Island.

sidewalk in key west with cat paw prints

Today we have a quick bite of breakfast and then head out to explore the streets of Key West. Being married to a photographer, I spend a lot of time wandering around. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We saw roosters, flowers, palm trees, and stickers. All my favorites.

Grabbed a cold brew from Cuban Coffee Queen and walked around the Historic Seaport.

Heard the band starting to play at Sunset Pier… which means we are stopping to listen and enjoy a cold beverage. Here’s where I would insert the idea of having free time built into your Key West itinerary. If you “had” to be somewhere … you might miss out on an awesome view, cold beverages, and amazing live music.

A few more stops for pictures and then we are heading back to Winslow’s Bungalows. Not only do they have a great pool bar and pool area, but they offered a free tasting of Mutiny rum. It was yummy and the story was just as interesting.

We didn’t have any dinner plans to speak of so we “thought” we would head over to Mallory Square and enjoy sunset and then play it by ear. I think that’s a great way to spend any evening in Key West, at least one night. No particular plans and let the evening unfold.

Well, as we walked by Little Pearl and saw they had two chairs open at the bar… and we hopped on the chance to eat at Little Pearl. This place offers a tasting style menu and is worth every penny if you can get a reservation.

We have a later flight, also planned on purpose, which gives us almost a full day to play in Key West. What is always fun to see is the “guest” ships that dock at Mallory Square. On this day we were able to see the USCGC Eagle. This 295-foot, three-masted barque is used as a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. This is also known as “America’s Tall Ship” and is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in US service. Very, very cool to see in Key West.

Then it was off to lunch at First Flight. This is the Southernmost microbrewery and they offer a great courtyard seating area and a wonderful menu.

Afterward, we head off to the airport to head home. As per usual, we grab a last vacation cocktail and share a frozen Key Lime pie on a stick (dipped in chocolate).

We tried new places for food and drinks and had plenty of down time to relax. That’s what makes the perfect vacation… a perfect balance.

I get it, we didn’t do much on this trip. But, we had a really good time. If this seems a bit too slow for you, then check out these ideas:

  • Take a guided tour – a food tour, a walking tour, a ghost tour ( see our recommendations here )
  • Take the ferry (or seaplane ) out to the Dry Tortugas National Park – be sure to book this one in advance as it sells out quickly.
  • Head out on the water to snorkel the coral reefs
  • Go up the Keys for a day trip and see Bahia Honda State Park, sea turtles, or the Key Deer on Big Pine Key.
  • 3 Reasons Smathers Beach is the best
  • Visit one of the 18 museums on the island… like the Truman Little White House

One perfect day in Key West

Jess Swanson

What Key West lacks in size (it’s roughly four miles long and less than two miles wide) this little island makes up for in character: fresh seafood, breathtaking sunsets, and waterfront dive bars. A single day in the Conch Republic is hardly enough time to experience everything this oddball community has to offer, but this itinerary showcases the charm and grit that’s come to define the southernmost town in the continental United States.

Key West is a study in contrasts and this itinerary mixes the can’t-miss landmarks with quiet respites in nature, literary history with the island’s famous tangy dessert, and upscale elegant eats with down home dive bars. We’ve also incorporated real Tripadvisor reviews and ratings of what other travelers have learned and loved so you can make the most of your trip, too.

MORNING: An iconic photo and communing with nature

A large red, orange, and black marker that marks the Southernmost Point of the USA

A large part of Key West’s appeal is it’s geography: It is the last island on an archipelago that stretches 125 miles off the tip of Florida and only 90 miles from Cuba. A 12-foot-tall red, blue, and yellow buoy at the Southernmost Point conveniently lists these attributes, which makes taking a photo beside it highly sought-after. Set the alarm before 8 a.m. to arrive long before the sun starts searing down and the queue for photos winds down the block.

Once you’ve snagged the coveted photo, head east towards Indigenous Park , a seven-acre native tree and bird park with shaded footpaths winding through some of the oldest trees on the island and rescued pelicans, owls, cormorants, and ibises at the Key West Wildlife Center that’s also located on the grounds.

Just across the street is the West Martello Tower , a red-brick fort built in the 19th century that has since been refashioned into a lush, blossoming botanical garden. The best seat in the house is a white gazebo that overlooks the turquoise waves crashing onto Higgs Beach .

Traveler’s say: “This is just a marker at the Southernmost Point of the continental US and is 90 miles from Cuba. Go early as the line gets long in the afternoon. We were here on a cruise stop and walked there first thing off the ship and only waited about a minute. People in line are great about taking your picture and you take theirs. It was fun to get the picture.” — NorCal-traveler08

AFTERNOON: Key West eats and literary history

A thick slice of key lime pie from Blue Heaven

Now that you’ve hit your daily step goal, it’s time for lunch. Head to the corner of Thomas and Petronia Streets in Old Town, where crowing roosters announce your arrival at Blue Heaven , a no-frills dirt yard with individually painted tables and mismatched plates that boasts shrimp and grits, fresh fish sandwiches, and light bites. Whatever you do don’t skip dessert: a slice of their famous key lime pie made with a buttery cracker crust, freshly squeezed lime juice, sweet condensed milk, and heaps of meringue.

On the next block, you’ll find The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , a Spanish Colonial mansion where the storied author lived in the 1930s and wrote Death in the Afternoon, The Green Hills of Africa, and To Have and Have Not , and short plays including “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” The guided tours are frequent and educational, but be sure to take in the view of the Key West Lighthouse from the second-floor veranda and the adorable colony of lazy six-toed cats who appear to run the place.

For anyone seeking to cross paths with a living literary hero, head on over to Books & Books , a nonprofit bookstore co-founded by Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret author Judy Blume, who sometimes can be found manning the cashier herself.

Looking for a quiet oasis to kick up your feet? Look no further than The Gardens Hotel , a 20-room boutique inn dating back to the 1800s with crown molding, brocade curtains, and a surprisingly high-tech self-serve wine bar. Press the button to fill your glass and step outside to a shaded nook among the rare orchids, black bamboo, and koi pond in the namesake garden.

EVENING: Pastel sunsets and seedy dive bars

A sailboat on the horizon of a pink-purple sunset in the last light of the day at Mallory Square

Figure out when the sun will set and, roughly an hour before, join the throng of oddball locals and wide-eyed visitors to Mallory Square for a communal waterfront viewing of the sunset. There’s plenty of kiosks selling nicknacks and souvenirs and curious street performers on stilts and tightropes all vying for your attention but the setting sun is the true star of the show.

Dinner tends to be a far more serious affair and might be worth considering a quick outfit upgrade from shorts and sandals. Antonia’s , which is one of the most popular restaurants in town, is an elegant Italian option with a carb-lover’s offering of pastas.

For the quintessential Key West experience, simply stroll down Duval Street to witness the drunken shenanigans. For anyone looking to partake in the revelry themselves, consider any of the seedy dive bars within a half-mile radius: Capt. Tony’s Saloon , a dimly lit bar festooned with dollar bills and brassieres that Hemingway was rumored to have frequented; Green Parrot Bar , a classic Key West bar where a small plaque near the bathrooms states that “Elvis Presley Slapped Hemingway Here” in 1957; and The Chart Room Bar , a laidback watering hole that doles out free popcorn with cocktails and tucked inside the Pier House Resort & Spa .

GETTING OUT ON THE WATER TOUR OPTIONS

  • Key West’s sunsets are legendary, and the snazziest way to experience it is on a locally owned sailboat with complimentary wine .
  • There’s arguably no one better than Captain Sheri , founder/director of the Florida Keys Wild Dolphin Alliance, to take you out on the water to learn about and encounter wild bottlenosed dolphins.
  • For a slower pace, consider an eco kayak tour that’ll wind through the backcountry mangrove channels and get you up close to natural wildlife.

Worthy detours along the way

Know Before You Go

Key West is most comfortable weather-wise between November and March, when the temperatures and humidity are at their lowest. But for anyone looking to snag a hotel deal, consider visiting during the summer — just pack plenty of sunscreen and an umbrella.

Everyday is a good day to visit Key West. Most eateries, establishments, and attractions are open seven days a week. Weekends tend to be more crowded so consider a midweek visit for a more laidback vibe (and an easier time finding parking).

Most museums and attractions close around 5 or 6 p.m. Restaurants typically stop serving around 10 or 11 p.m. (though there are plenty of late-night spots especially on Duval Street). Since last call isn’t until 4 a.m., most bars and lounges stay open late.

Old Town: For those looking to stay close to the raucous action, Old Town is for you. Everything’s within walking distance, and most accommodations have fascinating histories and date back to the 19th century. Consider the Kimpton Key West, which is a collection of five historic properties across Old Town that feature three private pools, an outdoor bar, and a tropical white and wood-toned palette.

New Town: On the quieter side of the island, New Town is a whole lot easier to navigate, find parking, and, like the name suggests, features newer construction. With a lagoon pool and classic midcentury cars, Havana Cabana is a 106-room hotel overlooking the bay on Roosevelt Boulevard and inspired by the island nation 90 miles away.

Stock Island: Though it’s not technically on Key West, Stock Island is just across the Cow Key Channel on the neighboring island. It’s grittier on this side of the channel with marinas, fishing boats, and colorful mobile homes. But The Perry Hotel & Marina embraces the seafront charm with its sleek design that incorporates concrete, steel, and wood. Rooms overlook the pool and boats bobbing dockside at the 229-slip marina.

Public transportation: There’s no metro or subway system here, but public buses do service the island, connecting Stock Island, New Town, and Old Town. The Duval Loop is a free hop-on, hop-off service that makes 18 stops across Old Town, where parking is notoriously difficult.

By hotel shuttle: If you’re staying at a hotel in New Town or Stock Island, check with the front desk since most hotels offer regular shuttles to and from Old Town.

By bike: Key West is certainly more bike-friendly than it is car-friendly. There’s plenty of bike racks posted around the island and no shortage of bike tours to choose from.

By rideshare: Uber and Lyft service the island.

By taxi : Cabs service the island as well. Though you’ll most likely find them posted near the airport.

Senior doctors in England have voted to accept an improved government pay deal, bringing to an end the year-long dispute which had led to strike action.

The British Medical Association (BMA), a trade union which has been representing the consultants, put the offer on pay and conditions to its members, with 83% voting in favour.

The pay deal includes changes to the review body on doctors' and dentists' remuneration (DDRB) and a 2.85% (£3,000) uplift for those who have been senior doctors for four to seven years, said the BMA.

The offer is in addition to the 6% awarded during the DDRB process last summer.

Administrators to The Body Shop are drawing up plans to salvage a future for one of Britain’s best-known high street brands.

Insolvency practitioners at FRP Advisory have outlined proposals to launch a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) that would see The Body Shop entering talks with landlords about rent cuts, as well as other creditors, Sky News has learnt.

According to proposals sent to The Body Shop's creditors on Friday morning, which lay bare the depths of the financial problems inherited by the investor which bought the company less than four months ago, a CVA would "allow the company to be rescued and exit from administration".

This would see it continuing to trade under the ownership of Aurelius, the investment firm which took control of it at the start of the year.

The crisis enveloping Thames Water has deepened after its holding company announced it had been unable to meet a debt repayment.

Kemble Water said it missed an interest payment that was due on Tuesday.

The firm said it had asked its lenders to take no immediate action so as to "provide a stable platform while all options are explored".

The announcement paves the way for a potential restructuring of Thames Water, which serves nearly a quarter of Britain's population.

The UK's largest specialist wine retailer, Majestic, has completed a rescue deal to buy Vagabond from administration.

On Friday, Majestic confirmed it had completed the acquisition of the wine bar chain, which will secure the future of nine Vagabond venues and 171 workers.

The bar firm's "underperforming" site in Canary Wharf has not been bought and will be closed.

Vagabond's two sites at Gatwick Airport are also not included in the deal.

The average UK house price fell by approximately £2,900 month on month in March, according to Halifax.

The typical property value fell by 1%, having risen 0.3% in February.

Average property prices landed at £288,430, said Kim Kinnaird, director of Halifax Mortgages.

"That a monthly fall should occur following five consecutive months of growth is not entirely unexpected, particularly in view of the reset the market has been going through since interest rates began to rise sharply in 2022.

"Despite this, house prices have shown surprising resilience in the face of significantly higher borrowing costs."

Prices remain almost £50,000 above pre-pandemic levels, she added.

Nicky Stevenson, managing director at estate agent group Fine & Country, said: "An increasingly busy property market helped to prop up prices on an annual basis at the beginning of spring, but the monthly fall shows there is still some turbulence."

Once an interest rate cut appears on the horizon, demand should "push UK prices 3% higher this year", said Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at estate agent Knight Frank.

British billionaire Joe Lewis has avoided a jail sentence after admitting he orchestrated an insider trading scheme that helped those around him make millions.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without emptying your wallet.

In this series over the coming months, we're trying to find the cheapest ways to identify the healthiest options in the supermarket.

We've asked  Sunna Van Kampen, founder of Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing supermarket products in the search of healthier choices, for his input.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, rather how to get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

This week we're having a look at  juices - the staple of the lunchbox.

The NHS recommends children between the ages of four and six should have no more than 19g of sugar a day and ages seven to 10 no more than 24g.

"But would you believe a standard apple juice carton (200ml) contains over 22g of sugar," Sunna says - equal to five teaspoons.

That's nearly a child's daily intake in a single carton.

"It might seem like the healthier option at a glance, because it’s just fruit juice and sure, it's natural fruit sugar, but remember those are concentrated doses without the fibre of whole fruit," Sunna says.

Many reach for juice cartons labelled "no added sugar" or "sugar-free" - but here's where we hit a speed bump.

"These options contain the same artificial sweeteners as diet soft drinks, which, while cutting down on sugar, introduce their own set of concerns for parents," Sunna says.

"From affecting taste preferences to unnecessary chemicals, they're not the golden ticket to healthy hydration we might hope for."

The alternative

"I look for juice cartons that strike a balance without breaking the bank," Sunna says.

He suggests aiming for options with lower natural sugar content that are diluted with water to keep the sweetness in check without resorting to additives.

"This way, you're not just quenching thirst - you're also fostering healthier hydration habits," he says.

"The secret I've discovered upon my many journeys down the supermarket aisles is Cawston Press."

The company offer a "pressed fruit shaken with water" range that is as low as 45% juice.

"That makes a 200ml carton 8.8g of sugar - over a 50% reduction in their standard juice carton sugar intake."

The nutritionist's view - from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food, and health sciences at Teesside University...

There are some accurate suggestions here.

Additionally, the message should be to stay away from these juices as they are undoubtedly contributing to the tooth decay and obesity issues.

It's difficult, though, to achieve especially with children so, as suggested, look for the lowest sugar content with nothing artificial added as stated.

This range of Cawston Press is 32p per 100ml or £1.90 for a pack of three in Tesco.

Slightly more expensive are Innocent smoothies at 47p per 100ml or £7 for a 10 pack.

Fruit Shoot, which uses  Sucralose and Acesulfame K as sweeteners, comes in cheaper at 22p per 100ml or £3.60 for an eight pack.

Working that over the course of a year with a juice carton a day:

  • Fruit Shoot is £164.25 a year
  • Cawston Press is £231.16
  • Innocent is £255.50

Even though there are cheaper alternatives, Sunna suggests that the extra cost is an investment in your health.

By picking Cawston Press over Innocent you can save nearly £25 a year and reduce your kids' sugar intake by 3kg every 12 months.

"Good for your wallet and great for their health," Sunna says.

In response to our article, Innocent told us: "We're on a mission to make it easier to live well through the delicious goodness of fruit and veg.

"We know that most of us need to get more of it into our diets and our juices and smoothies are packed full of fruity goodness. We don't add sugar - we never have, and we never will - so our products only contain the same natural sugar as you’ll find in fresh fruit and veg.

"Our 'innocent kids' range of juices and smoothies are made from 100% crushed fruit and veg, contain at least one micro-nutrient, and count towards one of your five a day.

"All our kids' smoothies are available in the recommended 150ml portion and are less than 100kcals per wedge allowing our customers to enjoy the drinks in moderation."

A Fruit Shoot spokesperson told us: "Fruit Shoot is all about offering healthier consumer choices, which is why over the years we've worked to reformulate Fruit Shoot to reduce calories without compromising on taste."

"Fruit Shoot contains sugar from real fruit complemented by permitted sweeteners - providing the taste consumers love."

Cawston Press said: “Our Cawston Press Fruit Waters are a blend of not-from-concentrate fruit juice shaken with still water and made with natural ingredients, meticulously crafted to meet the high standards of school approval.

"As with all Cawston Press juices, our Fruit Waters are made simply with pressed fruit, and are free from artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives with no added sugars - what we call No Jiggery Pokery. The sweetness of Cawston Press' Fruit Waters comes solely from the pure juices of the pressed fruit, nothing else."

Disney+ is set to crack down on password-sharing.

Chief executive Bob Iger told CNBC the streaming platform would start taking action against the behaviour from June in some countries, before a "full rollout" in September.

Password sharing refers to users who share their log-in details with family and friends who are not in the same household, enabling them to access content without paying for it.

The crackdown would be "our first real foray into password sharing" to "turn this business into a business that we feel really good about", Mr Iger said.

Disney's decision comes after fellow streaming giant Netflix attributed a recent jump in subscribers to its own action on password sharing.

"Netflix is the gold standard in streaming," Mr Iger said.

"They've done a phenomenal job and a lot of different directions.

"I actually have very, very high regard for what they've accomplished. If we can only accomplish what they've accomplished, that would be great."

The price of oil has continued to shoot up this morning - meaning the cost of petrol at the pumps in Britain is at risk of rising further in the coming weeks.

A barrel of Brent crude topped $91 (£72.10) at one point this morning - its highest level since October.

The price has since eased back slightly to $90 (£71.30) a barrel, but that is still the highest it has been in months.

It comes as tensions ramp up in the Middle East amid fears of a wider escalation of the Israel-Hamas war.

Investors have also been growing increasingly jittery about global supplies after another Ukrainian drone strike on a Russian oil refinery earlier this week.

Meanwhile, London's FTSE 100 is down 1% this morning amid the geopolitical tensions - though oil and gas stocks have risen 0.3% (no surprise there).

On the currency markets, £1 will buy you $1.26 US or €1.16, down slightly on yesterday's rates.

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. So, every Friday the Money team get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week it is...

'It's harder to get a mortgage if you're self-employed'

We've enlisted the help of Pete Mugleston , managing director and mortgage expert Online Mortgage Advisor, and to help us get to the bottom of this one, he's outlined two examples.

"By looking at the two hypothetical individuals, Person A and Person B, I aim to outline the differences and nuances of securing a mortgage under two very different circumstances," he says.

Person A: Self-employed - annual income £60,000

Person A is a self-employed professional with an annual income of £60,000.

They run their own business, providing services directly to clients and managing their finances independently.

"In the realm of mortgage applications, self-employed individuals like Person A face a unique set of challenges, especially if they do not have the required proof of accounts readily available," Pete says.

When it comes to securing a mortgage, lenders typically rely on financial documents to assess an applicant's income stability and affordability.

"For self-employed individuals without the necessary proof of accounts, the road to mortgage approval can indeed become more arduous."

Without the required documents such as two to three years of certified accounts, SA302 forms and business accounts, Person A might find themselves facing several obstacles...

"One potential hurdle is the possibility of a larger deposit requirement - lenders often view self-employed applicants without sufficient financial documentation as higher risk," Pete says.

"To mitigate this risk, they may request a more substantial deposit, possibly ranging from 20% to 25% of the property's value."

For the average UK property, with the value sitting at around £263,600, that deposit could range between £52,700 and £65,900 - a far cry from the more reasonable 5-10% deposit.

However, in some cases, lenders may consider Person A's past and projected future earnings.

If they can demonstrate a history of consistent income through bank statements, contracts of future work or other evidence, this may strengthen their case.

"However, this process can be complex and may not guarantee approval," Pete says.

Lenders also assess the stability of income for self-employed individuals.

Unlike salaried employees with predictable monthly earnings, self-employed individuals may experience fluctuations in income due to seasonality, market changes or other factors.

"This variability can raise concerns for lenders, who want assurance that the borrower can consistently meet mortgage repayments," Pete says.

"Without the required proof of accounts, Person A's journey to securing a mortgage may involve more stringent requirements, additional scrutiny of income, and a potential need for a larger deposit."

Person B: Employed full-time - annual income £40,000

Now let's turn our attention to Person B, who is employed full-time with an annual income of £40,000.

Person B holds a traditional job, receiving regular payslips and tax deductions through the PAYE system.

"In the eyes of mortgage lenders, Person B represents a more straightforward case compared to Person A, despite earning £20,000 less per annum," Pete says.

"For employed individuals like Person B, the process of obtaining a mortgage tends to be smoother.

"Person B can easily provide payslips, P60 forms and other employment-related documents to verify their income."

These documents offer a clear and consistent picture of earnings, making it easier for lenders to assess affordability.

"With a reliable income stream and documented financial history, Person B may qualify for standard deposit requirements, typically ranging from 5% to 20% of the property's value."

Lenders can conduct a straightforward affordability assessment for Person B based on their documented income. The process usually involves multiplying their annual salary by a standard factor (often four to 4.5 times) to determine the maximum mortgage amount.

"In comparison to the self-employed Person A, Person B's path to mortgage approval is generally smoother, with fewer hurdles related to income verification and deposit requirements," Pete says.

While employed individuals like Person B benefit from easily verifiable income and standard procedures, self-employed individuals such as Person A face a more challenging path, particularly in circumstances where they have less than the required proof of accounts.

In summary...

This one is no myth.

"For self-employed individuals, the key lies in meticulous financial preparation, including maintaining accurate accounts, saving for a potentially larger deposit and providing additional evidence of income stability," Pete says.

You can also seek professional help if required.

With all that in mind, the money must here if you are self-employed is to be well-prepared!

The next time you order an Uber, you might notice something different.

The company is introducing a new safety feature that will remind you to put your seatbelt on.

When your trip starts, the driver's Uber app may sound an alert so you don't forget.

At the same time, your own Uber app will receive a push notification, with another reminder to buckle up.

"You can expect to receive these reminders on a regular basis," Uber says.

"Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest ways to help keep you and any fellow riders safe. We understand that some riders may have medical exemptions from wearing a seat belt."
