Melanie did a really wonderful job. showed us some cool behind the scenes aspects of the park and some interesting history. Well worth the price.
A boy thing to visit & tour ball parks or stadiums .. but mom loves it, too. Since I'm pretty tomboyish, God blessed me with all boys, to continue my tomboyish life to the fullest, so visiting ball parks or football stadiums is an always go2 for all of us. My hub decided to buy us tour tickets to the "so called"voted #1 ball park in the nation". (Bias Dodger fan here ha) Tickets were around $30.00 per person, there is also a parking structure right across the stadium team store. Parking was about $1.00 per hour, not bad in comparison to LA parking Knowing that the Padres beat the Dodgers, and knowing that we are LA fans ... we had to bring our LA gear to the tour, but it was fun seeing some reactions, but all respectful The tour took about an hour and a half, do bring your water, walking shoes, and cap You'll enjoy it and indeed, it is a beautiful stadium.

Wife, son, and I took the tour the day after Thanksgiving. Over an hour long tour that showed most every major aspect of this beautiful venue (visitor locker room, dugout, suites, press box, etc.) As a baseball coach I woul have liked to also see the batting cages under the stadium and their weightroom. Still a very worthwhile tour that lasted over an hour. Our guide Juan did a great job.
This tour was very fun and interesting. It is pretty established now that Petco Park is the best baseball stadium in the USA, getting an inside/out tour of it was fun, and the factoids they tell you about the stadium are very interesting. What I appreciated the most was the history of not just the stadium, but the team and the sport in San Diego. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
My wife and I really enjoyed this tour. We got to see historical, behind-the-scenes of the ballpark while learning about the history of Petco Park and the San Diego Padres. The stops included: Field Warning Track Cutwater Coronado Club Padres Hall of Fame Press Box Private Luxury Suite Breitbard Hall of Fame Awesome how the stadium incorporated the 2 historical buildings, local eateries/breweries, and different price points for all fans to enjoy the game. This was one of our favorite stops in San Diego. If you are a baseball fan you would love this tour. The tour guide was fun and very informative.
" Great Educational & Interesting Tour " My friend and I went on a Petco Park for a 1 1/2 hour tour. We went all over the ballpark, and learned so much from Patty our tour guide. Patty was so energetic as she took us all over Petco Park, and would tell us stories about the history of the Padres, and the other events at the Park. We went up to the broadcasters booth, and all the way under the stadium where the players go. We also visited the Western Metal Building where we could get some great views of the field. Great tour and well worth the time and $$$.

Yelp Review #1,200 Bottom Line: Even if you aren't a Padres fan this is a great tour and entertaining activity for all ages. Before touring Petco Park, I had attended many games there but I had never toured any stadium. I wasn't sure what to expect but it certainly ended up being a home run. Given the awesome experience, the Petco Park Stadium Tour earns the spot of being my 1,200th Yelp review. (I always find an extra special experience to Yelp for milestone reviews.) Touring Petco Park was very interesting, engaging and fun! I've attended many games at Petco Park during the past 13 years and I really enjoyed checking out the stadium amenities without the crowds. Highlights for me were sitting in the Padres dugout, hanging out in the press box and lounging in the super pricey Rawlings Baseball Glove Chair. Usually tour groups get to see the visitor's clubhouse but that was closed when I was there since they were supposedly prepping for the All-Star game in a few weeks. (Tour groups never get to see the Padres clubhouse since it contains their personal belongings.) Other stops on the tour included the Ground Crew's area, guest safety room (aka drunk tank/jail/Dodger's fans VIP seating), the city of San Diego's suite and the warehouse. Like any smart tour, it conveniently ends at the gift shop, well, actually the Fan Shop, but really, it is the same thing. Our tour guide was Tim and he really knocked it out of the park. Even though I don't have children of my own, I appreciate how he involved the younger generation in our tour group by making them "co-Navigators." Tim was a knowledgable and enthusiastic tour guide and gave the group lots of interesting nuggets of information. He also did a great job giving people time to get photos while keeping the tour on pace for the non-paparazzi members. Petco Park is a great stadium but it's definitely Tim that made the tour a five-star experience. My only regret is that I didn't ask Tim, who said he used to be in broadcasting, if he knew Ron Burgundy. Stay classy San Diego! Overall, this is a beautiful stadium with an All Star tour guide!

So my buddy and I arrived to beautiful San Diego on Saturday morning, September 5th. It was too early to check into our hotel, so naturally we found a restaurant that served brunch and endless mimosas. Well my buddy and I had one too many an hour before our stadium tour started. So after brunch we checked into our hotel and then left for the stadium. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived to the stadium, my buddy couldn't get it together and threw up in front of the stadium, and could barely walk on the tour. At this point, we were kindly asked to leave. I don't have any issue with being asked to leave; my buddy was a hot mess and they did so in such a nice way. The next day my buddy and I returned to the stadium, knowing the tours for that day were sold out but hoping for the best. Well the Petco Park staff were more than accommodating, after we told them the truth, they allowed us to join the tour using our tour tickets from the day before. Our tour guide Tim, was awesome and even made fun of us after being told about our situation. The tour was so much fun, the staff so nice and gracious, and the park so beautiful that the Padres made a new fan in me. let it be known, that the Dodgers are number 1 in my book but when San Diego isn't playing against LA, I will definitely be team San Diego, heck, I'd be more than willing to go to a Padres game, even if the Dodgers aren't playing!

Petco Park: Monday, June 30, 2014: 12:30 Have you ever wanted the 'behind the scenes' look at a big league ball park? If so, Petco is a great place to start. While exploring the 'gaslamp' district we stumbled into this unplanned opportunity and I loved it. My wife, on the other hand, enjoyed walking around the park and seeing me very happy. She enjoyed the history, the enthusiasm of our host, and the character of the park, but I loved it. The tour is comprehensive, as we got to see almost every part of the park. Our access was limited in two areas, we could not stand on the grass and we could not get into the locker rooms. The Reds were in town and scheduled to play that night, and when the locker room is occupied the tours don't go in. Early on in the tour we bumped into the San Diego manager, Bud Black, and he was nice enough, but what I really enjoyed was how he treated some of the employees working in the bowels of the stadium. He stopped, talked, smiled and was very positive with them. This is a classy guy who, given the tough year the Padres are having, could have easily been preoccupied. Interesting to me was the fact that there are two very old buildings that the Padres incorporated into the design of the stadium, and they look great. One, the Western Metal Building, was where we entered the stadium and on the upper floor they have a very cozy bar area that featured a lot of wood, reminding me of the bar from Cheers, only better. You get to walk out onto a patio and have an unprecedented view of left field. The other building is out in the park beyond the stadium and it now has a commercial occupant that I can't recall. Another highlight was the dugouts. We were able to go into them, sit on the bench, imagine we were a Padre or a Red for a few minutes, and then move on. This brought out the inner baseball nerd in me. I was sitting there thinking about 'Sandlot', and how fun baseball has always been. Beyond those highlights, our tour also featured a stop in the lounge that exists directly behind home plate for the fans that buy the $350 per seat tickets. The ticket includes unlimited access to a lushly appointed bar and an adjoining buffet. There were some very nice paintings of former Padre players, and an attention to detail that simply needs to be appreciated. In my case, I was doing math in my head to figure out how much it costs to get these seats for an entire season. It's an awful lot, thus the nice food and ambiance. Having now taken the official tour of two great ballparks (the other being ATT park, Home of the Giants), I highly recommend them. The place is typically uncrowded, the folks that guide you know their stuff, and you get access that you'll never get during a ball game. Enjoy.

At Petco Park, Watch A Baseball Game Like Never Before
Petco Park is home of Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres, who have competed in the National League’s West Division since their establishment in 1969. Though they’ve never won the World Series, the Padres are still a beloved part of the San Diego community, and their home, Petco Park, is a treasure of the sports world. Widely rated one of the best ballparks out there, it’s a wonderful place to take in a baseball game, go for a guided tour, or enjoy a live music concert.
Save on your visit to the Tour of Petco Park! Tour of Petco Park is included on the Go San Diego Pass . Save an additional 5% on the Go City Pass with Coupon Code: GO5CMANTIS The discount stacks on top the current sale prices! Promo expires on April 30th.
Petco Park History
When the San Diego Padres became an MLB franchise in 1969, they played their home games in Jack Murphy Stadium, and they would continue to do so (even as the stadium underwent a series of name changes due to shifting sponsorship rights) until 2003. In 2004, the Padres would move into shiny new Petco Park, which took over three years to build and cost just under $500 million to construct. Petco Park was designed by the architectural firm Populous (who were at that time known as HOK Sport), the company responsible for such legendary sports arenas as Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the new Wembley Stadium, and Fiserv Forum, just to name a few of their many acclaimed projects.
Petco Park is one of those special stadiums where the cliché is true: there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. An intimate arena, Petco Park was designed so that many seats have not only terrific views of the field, but also the surrounding skyline, cityscape, and ocean.
What’s at Petco Park
Perhaps the most indelible feature of Petco Park’s design is the iconic Western Metal Supply Building standing along the stadium’s left-field foul line. This four-story building was the site of an actual local metal business that got its start in the late 19 th Century, eventually opening this 50,000-square-foot headquarters during the first decade of the twentieth century. Instead of demolishing the elegant brick structure, which had been named a historic landmark in 1978, the architects incorporated the building into Petco Park’s floorplan. Now, when baseball fans the world over picture the Padres’ home stadium, this is often the first thing they think of.
Formerly known as Park at the Park, Gallagher Square is a nearly three-acre green space that’s an essential part of the Petco Park experience. Located just beyond the outfield wall, Gallagher Square contains a little league-size infield and plenty of spots to spread out on a blanket and enjoy a beautiful San Diego afternoon. It’s also where you’ll find Tony Gwynn Plaza, the centerpiece of which is a statue of Mr. Padre himself. You’ll definitely want to snap a selfie or two on this hallowed ground.
If the Padres are out of town when you’re visiting San Diego—or your trip falls in the middle of baseball’s five-month-long offseason—consider going on a tour of Petco Park. In fact, even though nothing compares to experiencing a live sporting event in person, a tour of Petco Park will grant you numerous unforgettable opportunities that you wouldn’t otherwise have. These include the chance to see behind the scenes, walk on the outfield warning track, stroll through the press box, check out a luxury suite, and more.
Tips for Visiting Petco Park
- If you are seeing other sights while in San Diego you can save some money if by getting a Go San Diego Pass . The Tour of Petco Park is included as are many other great San Diego Attractions .
- For the record, tours are available on days when the Padres have a home game, too, you’ll just find that certain parts of the stadium are off-limits due to the nature of it being a game day. This will cut down on the number of behind-the-scenes areas you can access.
- Gallagher Square is free and open to the public when the Padres are not playing a home game. When the Padres are in town, Gallagher Square is transformed into a general admission seating area. Sightlines of the field aren’t the greatest from here, but the vibe is amazing, the ticket prices aren’t bad compared to more conventional seats, and there’s a big-screen television showing the game.
- There are three major parking areas just southeast of Petco Park that are affiliated with the Padres, where parking will cost you anywhere between $30 and $50 per vehicle. There are also a number of garages and lots within a several-block radius of the stadium. However, given that this is a densely populated area of the city, those options won’t be cheap either. If you’re staying in the area, consider walking to the game or riding public transportation. It’ll save you money and be less of a hassle. If you must for any reason drive to the stadium on a game day, it’s recommended you purchase your parking pass ahead of time online.
- If you’re interested in biking to Petco Park, be advised that there are bike stands available around the stadium at the following Gates: Home Plate, Park Boulevard, Gaslamp, Downtown, and Balboa.

Wonderfront returning to San Diego this week as landscape for music festivals grows increasingly challenging
A record number of festivals have recently been canceled, postponed or gone out of business, while Coachella’s attendance has gone down for the second consecutive year. What does it take to buck the trend? Will Wonderfront’s lineup do the trick with Kaytranada, Beck, Weezer and The Roots?

This week’s return of San Diego’s Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival, after a one-year hiatus, comes at a time when the live-music industry is swirling with pressing questions.
Have music festivals peaked? As production costs soar ever higher, are there too many festivals competing for the same acts? Are there too few superstar headliners to guarantee success in the face of potential bankruptcy?
“Fans only have so much money and they won’t go to every festival,” said Dave Shapiro, the co-founder of the San Diego-based Sound Talent Group. Its roster of artists includes Hanson, Vanessa Carlton, Steve Vai, Jefferson Starship and the San Diego band Pierce The Veil, which performs June 30 at Petco Park with blink-182.
“Competition is healthy,” Shapiro continued. “But it also comes to a point where it becomes unhealthy. And there is a lot of competition, especially in Southern California,”
That being the case, is the bumpy run for festivals this year — including last month’s under-attended Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio — simply a course correction in a marketplace that still sees festivals taking place here, there and nearly everywhere?
Or are these anomalies in an industry that, in 2023, saw the top eight festivals worldwide — including Outside Lands in San Francisco and Hard Summer in Los Angeles — generate a combined gross revenue of $192 million? (In 2017, the last year Coachella reported its gross earnings, the six-day, two-weekend festival brought in a staggering $114 million.)
Of course, launching and sustaining multi-day music festivals has never been easy — or inexpensive. But the landscape for such events has never seemed as perilous or challenging as now, in part because of inflation, supply chain issues, skyrocketing tour costs and ever-higher ticket prices.
How perilous?
Last month, Coachella — the largest and most lucrative annual music festival in the world — for the second consecutive year failed to sell out its second three-day weekend.
Analysis: Coachella returns — Is the world’s biggest annual music festival losing some allure after 24 years?
Despite such headliners as Bad Bunny, Blackpink and Frank Ocean, and the last-minute addition of blink-182, the festival — which runs Friday through Sunday and April 22-24 — has not sold out in advance for the first time since 2010
April 14, 2023
Coachella’s first weekend — headlined, like the second weekend, by Lana del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, The Creator — was sold out. But the first weekend seemed less crowded than the usual 125,000 daily attendance of previous years, when both Coachella weekends would routinely sell out months before any performers had been announced. (Twenty percent of the festival’s ticket-buyers each year are from San Diego County, according to Coachella’s producers, who track sales by zip codes.)
Festivals impacted worldwide
“It’s been tough,” said Wonderfront Managing Partner Paul Thornton. “The rising costs for bands to tour and festivals to be produced have pushed ticket prices up past the point of acceptance for consumers. You heard a lot about that with Coachella this year.”
Last month also saw the producers of Jay-Z’s 12-year-old Made in America festival announce the Philadelphia event’s cancellation for a second consecutive year. Almost concurrently, the producers of the 16-year-old Mona Foma festival disclosed their event’s demise.
Tennessee’s Riverbend Festival, which was launched in 1982 in Chattanooga, will be dark this year. So will the 14-year-old Firefly Festival in Delaware, the 20-year-old MetalDays festival in Slovenia, the 44-year-old Beale Street Festival in Memphis, and an array of festivals in Australia and Europe, where — in the United Kingdom alone — nearly two-dozen annual festivals have this year been canceled, postponed or gone under altogether.
“You can only book the same (established) bands so many times, and there are only so many new bands coming up,” said Sound Talent Group’s Shapiro.
“Bands can’t play the same festivals, over and over, and they can’t play different festivals in same market in the same year because of (contractual restrictions). All festivals have a shelf life and have a course that they run. But, honestly, not many of our artists have been impacted. Because a lot of the festivals our artists play at have not had those big issues to contend with.”
Closer to home, after a successful 12-year run, the AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival was discontinued after its 2022 edition. The lawsuit-marred KAABOO Del Mar — which has been dark since 2019 — last year announced plans to return this September but has yet to disclose a single performer. (KAABOO’s 2015-2019 editions at the Del Mar Fairgrounds were announced between six to 10 months in advance.)
Solana Beach settles lawsuit over the KAABOO music festival’s return to Del Mar this year
The city of Solana Beach settled a lawsuit that it filed against the Del Mar Fairgrounds due to concerns about the environmental effects of the KAABOO music festival, which is scheduled to return to the fairgrounds later this year.

Some other festivals in the region are continuing but have contracted in size.
Baja Beach Fest in Rosarito Beach expanded from one weekend to two in 2021, then scaled back to one weekend in 2023. This year’s already sold-out edition will be held Aug. 9-11 with a lineup that includes Peso Pluma, Becky G and Kali Uchis.
Another beach-side event, the eight-year-old Ohana Festival in Dana Point, expanded from one weekend to two in 2022, then went back down to one in 2023. This year’s edition will be held Sept. 27-29. The lineup features Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Alanis Morissette and Pearl Jam, whose lead singer — former San Diegan Eddie Vedder — is one of Ohana’s founders.
Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert
The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.
April 25, 2024
On April 22, the producers of Sacramento’s seven-year-old Sol Blume Festival postponed this year’s edition until 2025, after postponing the 2023 festival. On April 11, Ventura’s eight-year-old Skull & Roses was canceled barely a week before this year’s four-day edition was set to begin. Tickets and hotel packages were sold on a non-refundable basis.
Starting over
Such upheavals and uncertainty have given producers — and music fans — much to ponder. The continuing surge of upheavals in the market makes this week’s return of San Diego’s three-day Wonderfront especially intriguing.
The festival, which debuted in 2019, was dark in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It resumed in 2022, then pushed its 2023 edition to this year in order to shift its run dates from November to May.
Having only two festivals take place in a five-year period has, undeniably, impacted Wonderfront’s momentum. The debut edition of the festival drew 57,000 people over three days in 2019. That dipped to about 30,000 when the event resumed three years later.
“In 2022 we had to start over,” said Wonderfront Managing Partner Thornton.
“What’s hard is that most of the millennials who attended our festival in 2019 are out of school now and gone. So, in 2022, we had to replace most of our audience.”
Even so, Thornton is encouraged by how things are shaping up for the 2024 edition.
“We’re getting a good response, we’re selling tickets — I think Friday will sell out — and people like our lineup,” he said. “When there’s a challenging year overall for festivals and you can still stand out a little, you can really make the case that we’re smelling pretty good in a tough environment.”
The 2024 Wonderfront edition will take place Friday through May 12, alongside San Diego Bay at Embarcadero Marina Park. By coincidence, it is being held on the same weekend the multi-day Gator by the Bay festival takes place just a few miles north, also alongside San Diego Bay, at Spanish Landing Park.
As has been the case since Wonderfront’s launch in 2019, the festival is again receiving backing from the Port of San Diego and San Diego’s Tourism & Marketing Department.
Beck, Weezer, The Roots
The headliners for this year’s Wonderfront include Beck, Weezer and dance music and alternative hip-hop favorite Kaytranada. The lineup also features such varied acts as The Roots, Mt. Joy, JID, Steep Pulse, Carly Rae Jepsen and Dominic Fike.
This shouldn’t cause much conflict with Gator by the Bay, which showcases zydeco, blues, Cajun and other American roots-music styles. This year’s festival celebrates the 100th birthday of zydeco godfather Clifton Chenier.
Gator by the Bay will celebrate zydeco-music giant Clifton Chenier’s legacy with all-star lineup
Bayou boogie! The 21st annual edition will feature 100-plus performances on seven stages at Spanish Landing Park. The lineup includes C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Band, Marica Ball, Sonny Landreth, Rosie Flores, Chickenbone Slim with Laura Chavez, and more. Plus, 10,000 pounds of crawfish!
May 3, 2024
But Wonderfront and Gator do share a commonality beyond taking place concurrently. Both festivals have undergone internal and external changes — including new ownership — that organizers believe will help ensure longevity and growth for their respective events.
“Our goal for 2024 is profitability,” said Events.com CEO Mitch Thrower, whose La Jolla company is buying all the shares in Wonderfront. “We’ll be working to bolster sponsorship and other revenue streams, including ticketing.”
In general, it takes at least three years for a new festival, concert series or venue to break even.
Coachella, the most profitable annual festival in the world, lost about a million dollars when it debuted in 1999. It did not resume until 2001 after the festival’s original producer, Goldenvoice, was bought by AEG, the world’s second largest live events producer. It took several more years for Coachella to begin making money.
“Well, look, it’s not easy starting a festival,” AEG chairman, CEO and COO Jay Marciano told the Union-Tribune in a 2020 interview.
“Most of our festivals lose money for several years, or we turn the corner and finally become profitable, so you better be prepared to lose money. People look at Coachella, and think: ‘Oh, yeah, it made money (from the start).’ It didn’t.”
Coachella turns 20 this week — thanks, in part, to Pearl Jam and Phish
Coachella will celebrate its 20th anniversary with Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and an Easter morning “service” by Kanye West. Temporary Amazon Lockers will be on site.
April 11, 2019
Wonderfront’s Thornton has decades of experience producing festivals in California, Texas, and other states. He co-founded Wonderfront in 2019 with Ernie Hahn Jr., who in 2021 concluded a 25-year run as the general manager of the San Diego Sports Arena (now Pechanga Arena San Diego).
With the San Diego Sports Arena under his belt, Ernie Hahn takes stock and welcomes Wonderfront’s return
After completing 25 years as the arena’s general manager, he is focusing on his three-day bayside festival, which returns in November, and new company, Dream Hahn
Nov. 6, 2022
“With festivals,” Thornton said, “if you’re making money by your third year, you’re doing really well. Most of the time, it’s: ‘Can you get close to breaking even when going into your third year? And do you see a trend to make you feel good about going into your fourth year?’ ”
Thornton has taken several steps designed to help this year’s Wonderfront improve on the event’s previous editions.
The two Wonderfront performance stages that previously occupied the largest Seaport Village parking lot have been eliminated, as has the large satellite stage at Rocco Park. A new stage will be set up on the grassy traffic roundabout at the entrance to the main festival site at Embarcadero Park North. The festival’s silent disco, which was previously in Rocco Park, has also been relocated to Embarcadero Marina Park North.
‘Sense of discovery’
Wonderfront’s musical menu has also been streamlined to focus on just one or two key music styles each day, a move undertaken to draw specific audiences each day. And if such non-headlining performers as France’s Polo & Pan, Canada’s BadBadNotGood and South Africa’s Alice Phoebe Lou are not household names, that, too, is by design.
“With most festivals now,” Thornton said,” “it’s all about: ‘Who’s the biggest headliner?’ We want to introduce our audiences to emerging artists, who they may not know but will blow them away. We’ve spent a lot of time booking this year’s lineup and I feel really good about it.
“Even our opening acts, who will go on first each day, are fantastic. We want people who attend Wonderfront to have a real sense of discovery. And we have a Wonderfront radio station on the LITT Live app, so that people can listen to our artists, hear their music — pre-festival — and learn more about them.”
If all goes according to plan, future editions of Wonderfront will extend well beyond its current bayside location. And, Thornton hopes, its attendance will increase well beyond the 15,000 per day cap in effect this year.
“Looking down the road, I really think Wonderfront will grow into a whole lot of other venues — including Waterfront Park, the San Diego Convention Center and maybe even Petco Park — to become like the music equivalent of Comic-Con.
“Those music festivals that now draw 60,000 people a day got there by drawing 10,000 or 15,000 people a day in their early years. It’s very hard to go big right out of the gate.”
