2015 Tour de Yorkshire route revealed
The route for the inaugural tour de yorkshire has been announced with the 2015 race to start in bridlington and finish in leeds..
The three-day stage race, a direct legacy of last year’s Yorkshire Grand Depart of the Tour de France, takes place from 1-3 May and will be shown live on television.
Stage one starts in the seaside town of Bridlington and covers 174 kilometres before finishing further up the coast in Scarborough, featuring the 1.5-kilometre climb out of Robin Hood’s Bay which has an average gradient of 10.3%.
Stage two, also 174 kilometres, begins in Selby and ends in York with a women’s circuit event also taking place in York.
The final stage on Sunday 3 May travels from Wakefield to Leeds and takes in Cragg Vale and the cobbled streets of Haworth.
The race is organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), organiser of the Tour de France, with support from British Cycling and local authorities throughout the county.
Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France at ASO, said: “After the grandest of Grand Departs of the Tour de France, we were keen to return to Yorkshire.
“With its stunning landscapes, iconic cities and tough climbs, Yorkshire offers all the ingredients needed for a great cycling race. The welcome we received in Yorkshire in July 2014 was simply spectacular and I am very much looking forward to returning there in May for the Tour de Yorkshire.”
A sportive, The Tour de Yorkshire Ride, has also been confirmed and will take place on the morning of the final stage.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Before the Grand Depart had even finished people all across Yorkshire were asking when we can have more cycling!
“The Tour de Yorkshire will bring back many of the world’s top cycling teams and there will be an opportunity for ordinary people to ride the same roads on the same day in the sportive.
“And this is a free event to watch so there is an opportunity for everyone in the county to be part of Tour de Yorkshire in one way or another.”
Plans are for The Tour de Yorkshire to be an annual event on the cycling calendar.

The Tour de Yorkshire route covers all four of the Yorkshire counties .
It draws in urban sprawl such as Leeds and also juxtaposes the route with isolated moorland and rural idylls.
On the Tour de Yorkshire route there's also plenty of seaside where you can grab an ice cream too.
The 174km first stage of the route on Friday, May 3, starts in Bridlington and wends its way along the coast and over the moors to Scarborough.
The second Tour de Yorkshire stage on Saturday, May 2, which is also 174km, goes from Selby to historic York.
The third stage on the route heads from Merrie City Wakefield to nearby Leeds - but the 167km route covers Calderdale, Kirklees and other surrounding areas.

Tour de Yorkshire: Nordhaug wins opener in Scarborough
Norwegian wins from group of five
Lars Petter Nordhaug ( Team Sky ) won the opening stage at the Tour de Yorkshire in Scarborough on Friday. The Norwegian was a part of a five-rider breakaway that made it to the finish line where he out sprinted his rivals. Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) finished second in the sprint and Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis) was third. Nordhaug pulled on the first leader's jersey of the race following his stage win. He heads into the second stage on Saturday with a four-second lead over Voeckler and six seconds on Rossetto.

Marcel Kittel (Giant-Alpecin) made his return to racing at the Tour de Yorkshire after suffering from illness in the early season. However, the German sprinter abandoned the race after roughly 100km. Another pre-race favourite, Ben Swift (Team Sky) also abandoned the race after he crashed inside the final 60 kilometres of racing.
Meanwhile Bradley Wiggins (WIGGINS) made it safely through the opening day of racing as part of his new development team but he languished in 96th place, almost 15 minutes down on his former teammate, Nordhaug.
How it unfolded
The inaugural Tour de Yorkshire rolled out on Friday from the coastal town of Bridlington under blue skies and fresh spring air carried over from the North Sea. The race, built as part of the grand depart’s legacy from 2014, saw 18 teams rollout and head towards a demanding 174 kilometre route through some of the county’s most demanding terrain.
It wasn’t long before the day’s first break sauntered clear with Mark Christian (WIGGINS), Loïc Chetout (Cofidis), Eddie Dunbar (NFTO), Mark Stewart (Madison Genesis) and Rasmus Quaade (Cult Energy Pro Cycling) establishing a near five-minute lead.
Team Sky were unwilling to let leaders build anything that would threaten the early overall complexion of the race and they quickly set about reducing the deficit and by the time the five-man break had reached the 90 kilometre point and the foot of the Côte de Rosedale the gap had been reduced to just a few seconds.
Pierrick Quéméneur (EUC) was the next rider to try his luck and he was quickly joined by Tim Declercq (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise). Kittel, by this point was already struggling having been dropped on the previous climb and as the leading pair moved 40 seconds clear of the field Kittel’s position only began to worsen. He navigated through the team cars, alone and cut off from his teammates, before finally giving up.
The German wasn’t the only rider to leave the race. On the wet descent into Egton with just over 50 kilometres to go Swift was involved in a heavy fall that took out a number of riders. The crucial move was soon to come with 40 kilometres to go as the race headed into Whitby. First a 15-man break moved clear containing the eventual winning break.
It was Deignan who put the hammer down on the summit of the Côte de Robin Hood’s Bay after 145km with only Voecker, Nordhaug, Rossetto and Sanchez able to respond.
By the time they reached the finish line they had over a minute on the chasing peloton and Sky made their advantage pay, responding to a late attacks with their own accelerations but the quintet could not be separated until the line, with Nordhaug timing his sprint perfectly in the blustery conditions.

The full route for the 2020 Tour de Yorkshire has been announced, it has since been postponed due to the global pandemic. no new dates have been released as of yet.
The four stages of the men's race and two stages of the women's race have been unveiled at the Civil Hall in Leeds, with a hilly parcours set to once again entertain fans with spectacular racing.
Stage one of the men's race makes its way from Beverley to Redcar, taking in the climbs of Hooks House Farm and Lythe Bank.
Skipton hosts the start of stage two and culminates in Leyburn, with riders set to tackle Buttertubs and Grinton Moor en route - an exciting prospect after both climbs were removed from the men's World Championship road race last year because of the weather. This stage will also provide the first of the stages in the women's race, who will race exactly the same route.
Stage three for the men begins in Barnsley and finishes in Huddersfield, with the latter featuring in the race for the first time ever. The final day of the women's race will follow a similar course but will be 20km shorter than the men's route on this stage due to UCI regulations and will feature slightly less climbing as a result.
The final stage four, known as the 'Yorkshire classic', runs from Halifax's Piece Hall for a third year to Leeds and will feature the most climbing of any Tour de Yorkshire stage in history, totalling over 3,000m.

The 2020 Tour de Yorkshire will run from April 30 to May 3, with the women's race taking place on May 1 and May 2.
Speaking at the Yorkshire route unveiling, Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme said: "It will be tough, hard and challenging for women and men. It will be demanding but it's Yorkshire. Steep climbs, iconic climbs."
Stage one: Beverley to Redcar (176.5km)
Stage one will depart from Beverley and finish in Redcar, which organisers are calling the 'Yorkshire coast' stage. Along the route, it will feature categorised climbs at Hooks House Farm and Lythe Bank, with 1,718m of climbing over the 176.5km course.
Stage two: Skipton to Leyburn (124.5km)
Stage two departs from Skipton with the finish line situated in Leyburn, the 'Three Peaks' stage. As well as the men's second stage, the same 124.5km route will be used as the first stage of the women's race. Featuring both Buttertubs and Grinton Moor climbs, the stage features 1,747m of uphill.
Stage three: Barnsley to Huddersfield (134km/114km)
Barnsley will host the start of stage three, the third time in three years the town has hosted a start or finish in the British stage race. The stage will then end in a brand new location for the race, Huddersfield. Christened the 'heritage stage', once again the route will also provide the women's race with their second and final stage, with the women's stage being 114km long and the men's 134km.
The men's stage features 2,863m of climbing, including six ascents, with the women's race featuring only slightly less uphill racing. The climbs are Netherthong, Scapegoat Hill, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Leeming and Shibden Wall, the cobbled climb that is only featuring for the second time.
Stage four: Halifax to Leeds (177.5km)
Known as the 'Yorkshire classic', which will run for the third year in a row, the final stage will start in Halifax and finish in Leeds. Organisers say it's the toughest day in the race, featuring seven classified climbs totalling 3,304m of climbing, the most that has ever been included in a single stage of the race. The 177.5km route takes in the ascents of Goose Eye, Barden Moor, Skyreholme, Lofthouse, Greenhow Hill, Cow and Calf and Otley Chevin. The race will also pass through Skipton for the second time in three days.
This edition of the Tour de Yorkshire route will take in eight host locations including Halifax, Barnsley, Huddersfield and Leeds.
