It is one of the few structures which hasn’t lost its charm over the years. The walls were constructed with bricks, which were set and plastered with lime mortar. Teak wood supports its roof. And the ground floor of this structure was done with Cuddapah Slate. But it has been replaced with marble.

The building has undergone many major renovations over the years and has been maintained well to preserve its beauty.

Ripon Building – Chennai

Ripon building, chennai.

The magnificent white color building was commissioned in 1913 and was built by Loganatha Muthaliyar which took 4 years to complete. The inaugural function was huge and massive which was attended by around 3000 elite people of the city. It was beautiful in the structure in white color.

The tower in the middle of the building with the clock is remarkable. The building is constructed with stock bricks and roof is made of teak wood and marble flooring to add grace. It is more than 100 years old building located near Central railway station. The pure white color building is one of the architectural masterpieces.

It is the seat of the Chennai Corporation and generally, entry is restricted. A new block has been constructed, to look like the original, but with all the glass facade, it cannot dream of being a clone.

It is now renovated after metro work. It looks like a white palace with a beautiful garden. Must visit place for architecture lovers.

Here are the quickest and easiest bus routes, which have good onward train connections:

  • From Leeds via  Harrogate . The #36 bus takes 1 hour and 30 minutes from Leeds or 30 minutes from Harrogate. The bus is very comfortable, with leather seats and free Wi-Fi charging points. Grab a seat upstairs for the spectacular views! You can check the  Leeds to Ripon bus timetable here .

History of the Cathedral

Known initially as Ripon Minster, the building was designated a cathedral in 1836, but its history starts far earlier.

Ripon Cathedral was one of the first to be built in England when Christianity was introduced to England in the 7th century. The surviving 7th-century crypt is the oldest in the country. The rest of the cathedral ‘only’ dates to the 11th century!

In 672 AD, (Saint) Wilfrid returned from Rome, became abbot and built a new Minster church. He influenced the Synod of Whitby to adopt the Roman form of Christianity, replacing the Celtic form previously followed in the area.

Saint Wilfrid died in 710 and was buried near the high altar; however, his shrine was destroyed during the Reformation.

Ripon cathedral organ and stone screen beneath the Norman arch

Turmoil followed as the Danes destroyed Wilfrid’s church in the 10th century, leaving only the crypt intact. A new minister was raised, but William the Conqueror destroyed this during the  Harrying of the North . The current cathedral dates from the 12th century.

The intact west end was completed by 1220 and is an excellent example of the Early English Decorated style. Sadly, the central tower collapsed in an earthquake in 1450, damaging much of the nave; however, the transepts escaped. Subsequently, the nave was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style, with the clerestory and side aisles added at the same time.

Highlights of the Cathedral

The splendid Cathedral has a Gothic twin-towered west front.

Massive stone facade of Ripon Cathedral from the Front

Lancet Windows

The remarkable tall lancet windows cast multi-coloured light into the cathedral through beautiful stained glass.

Ripon Cathedral Lancet Windows

While the stone windows are medieval, little medieval glass remains, as the original windows were smashed during the Reformation. The ten current stained glass windows are late Victorian.

Great East Window

View of Ripon Cathedral great east window from outside

At the cathedral’s east end, tall lancet windows contrast sharply with the massive window and buttressed wall turrets; however, the remaining central crossing tower is quite squat.

Ripon Cathedral Great East Window

The magnificent interior is revealed as you pass through the west door entrance. Multiple tall pillars soar up to pointed arches, a walkway above and plain glass clerestory windows that flood the nave with light.

Pulpitum (Medieval Stone Screen)

The pulpitum or medieval stone screen at Ripon Cathedral

The original round Norman crossing arch has a medieval stone screen (pulpitum) at its base. This pulpitum is beautifully decorated with painted figures of Kings of England and bishops in elaborate pinnacle arches.

Pulpitum detail at Ripon cathedral

Above these figures, you’ll see tiny painted statues of people who were important in the history of Ripon and the Cathedral. While these statues appear old, they date from the middle of the 20th century.

Medieval Pulpit

The beautifully carved medieval floor-standing pulpit is next to the stone screen. It may originally have been placed on top of the screen; however, the organ is now above it.

Arts and Crafts Pulpit

Ripon Cathedral Arts and Crafts Pulpit

The elaborate bronze-covered Arts and Crafts pulpit dating from 1913 is attached to a nave pillar and stands high on green marble legs. The small figures on the sides of the pulpit are Anglo-Saxon saints: Chad, Cuthbert, Hilda and Ethelreda.

Markenfield Tombs

Two medieval tombs are found in the north transept. The oldest of the two is better preserved and shows Sir Thomas Markenfield in a suit of armour. He died in 1398.

The second tomb against the north wall has the effigy of his descendant, another Sir Thomas, who died in 1497. He lies above a beautifully carved chest with shields around the base.

Medieval Misericords in the Quire (Choir)

Perhaps the most atmospheric part of the cathedral is the incredible medieval Quire, with its intricately carved choir stalls, the beautiful high altar and the Great East Window.

Choir stalls at Ripon Cathedral

Separated from the nave by the stone screen and the organ, the quire is a serene and magical place.

The woodcarvings (misericords) decorating the choir stalls are believed to have inspired Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the author of Alice in Wonderland.

Carroll’s father was canon at the cathedral, so the young child would have been familiar with the carvings. Here, he would have seen the misericords, which have images that seem to appear in Wonderland.

Ripon Cathedral Misericords detail

One misericord has a carved griffin chasing a rabbit down a hole – could this have inspired Carroll to write about Alice’s fall down the rabbit hole?

Another has a misshapen character resembling Alice when she followed the ‘drink me’ instruction and shrank. It’s great fun to look at all the mythical beasts in the carvings.

The Crypt of Saint Wilfred

The most ancient part of the cathedral is the 7th-century crypt of St Wilfrid, beneath the floor of the medieval cathedral.

This tiny place of worship is reached via a steep staircase and a claustrophobic passageway.

Steps down to St Wilfreds Crypt

Inside, the simple altar and white-washed walls belie the significance of this place – the first Christian church in the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria.

St Wilfreds Crypt Ripon Cathedral

The crypt was designed as a place of pilgrimage, and 1350+ years later, it’s still visited by modern pilgrims.

Ripon Cathedral Organ and “The Hand”

There has been an organ at the Cathedral since at least 1447 when the organist was also the priest. Today’s magnificent organ was made by Harrison and Harrison as a rebuild of the original 19th-century instrument.

The intricate casework of the cathedral’s organ is within the Norman arch, above the stone screen.

PRO TIP : Look out for the golden hand in the middle of the organ loft! This hand was used by the organist as a signal to the choir at important points in services!

The North Side or the “Place of the Devil”

North side of the massive sandstone cathedral at Ripon

Traditionally, the northern parts of English churchyards are free of graves. This is because the coldest winds come from the north, and they were regarded as the place of the devil . Occasionally, suicides, criminals, and babies who had not been baptised were buried in unconsecrated land north of churches.

Ideal Plan for Visiting Ripon Cathedral

I must admit that I have visited the Cathedral a lot – and I find something new every time!

The Cathedral is worth exploring, and I recommend taking at least an hour to see the beautiful stonework, statues, crypt, and incredible choir stalls.

PRO TIP : You will get the most from your visit by working your way around the Cathedral anti-clockwise from the main entrance.

Personal Tips for Visiting Ripon Cathedral

Ripon cathedral dress code.

While there are no specific rules of conduct for the Cathedral relating to how to dress when visiting, modest attire is recommended and respectful. Bare-backed shirts, crop tops, miniskirts, skimpy shorts, and low-cut clothing are inappropriate.

You’ll want comfortable shoes for the tour, and if you are heading down to the crypt, be aware that the steps are small and steep.

Facilities at Ripon Cathedral

There is neither a café nor any toilets at Ripon Cathedral. However, both are available just a few steps from the main entrance.

Invest in a Cathedral Tour

I highly recommend booking a guided Cathedral tour , as the volunteer guides are so knowledgeable and passionate! There’s plenty to see inside Ripon Cathedral, and your guide will share lots of information to make your visit special.

Ripon Cathedral is stunning, with plenty of photography opportunities inside and out.

However, there are a few rules to be aware of regarding photography:

  • You can’t use tripods or selfie sticks inside the Cathedral and shouldn’t use flash photography during services.
  • While photographing inside the church, please also respect the privacy of those praying and lighting candles.

PRO TIP: The lighting inside the cathedral isn’t kind to photographers! It’s too bright in some places, with plenty of dark spots! Be sure to get comfortable with your camera’s manual settings before your trip!

Outside the Cathedral

Unlike most other cathedrals worldwide, Ripon is rarely busy: you’re unlikely to find people posing for their latest Instagram shot!

If you visit in the winter, the worst part about the exterior of the Cathedral will likely be the weather! Pack warm outer layers for your trip, as it can be bitterly cold, windy, and wet.

PRO TIP:  Take time to wander around the cathedral, see it from different viewpoints, and see the old churchyard.

Be Respectful

The Cathedral remains in use, with people worshipping and praying there. Please keep noise to a minimum during your visit.

Famous Connections to Ripon Cathedral

Wilfred owen.

Wilfrid Owen Memorial Ripon Cathedral

Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) is renowned as the War Poet of the First World War. He used poetry to speak out for the men in his care and to show the Pity of War. Owen’s poetry is unashamed, realistic, lyrical, and just as relevant today as when he wrote it.

Owen spent the most productive and creative period of his short life in Ripon in 1918. Poignantly, he spent his last afternoon in the Cathedral before returning to the trenches, where he lost his life.

Cafes, Bars, and Restaurants

Ripon Cathedral has a central location, so if you’re looking for somewhere to grab a bite to eat or drink, there are good affordable options nearby.

The cute Cathedral View café near Ripon Cathedral

The Cathedral View Café,  opposite the Cathedral, is tiny but fabulous! Everything is homemade, and the cakes are beyond delicious. I had tea with dangerously good ‘Snickers crunch cake’ for less than £5!  Highly recommended!

RIPON – The Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area is close to its fundraising goal and has started construction on its first facility in Ripon.

The new facility will sit on the corner of Blackburn and East Blossom streets, and club staff and board members celebrated the next step with a groundbreaking ceremony April 30 alongside Ripon community members, donors and local government leaders.

Board member Mary Lyke, whose family donated the seed money to get the project started, said the idea of establishing a Ripon club has been nine years in the making, and fundraising has been active for the last three.

The Ripon site, expected to open in summer 2025, will offer daily and local affordable care to support area youth's academic success, healthy lifestyles, character building and leadership, according to the club's website.

It will include a full-size gymnasium, licensed child care rooms, skilled trades workshops and a teen employment center, and members will have access to internet and other technology, basic needs programs and regular hot meals from the commercial kitchen.

Additionally, club programming engages members in activities that are aimed to create a positive environment where children and teens can learn expectations of respect, civility and courtesy, all while having fun and maintaining a sense of belonging with their peers.

The project has a total fundraising goal of $13 million, which has so far been supported by individuals, families, businesses and nonprofit groups.

In addition to the Lyke family, major donors include Tom and Carol Joseph, Tim and Vicky Wuest's family and the Webster family of Webster's Marketplace, who donated $1.3 million for the "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the trajectory of lives of Ripon’s children, now and for generations to come," according to Rob Webster.

College transfer: Moraine Park Technical College arts and science students can now seamlessly transfer to Ripon College in new agreement

Ed Wabiszewski also donated $1 million on behalf of the late Mary Wabiszewski, his wife of more than 55 years, for the club to maintain its original vision of the building. The groundbreaking honored his 92nd birthday, for which attendees presented him with a birthday cake and card while singing "Happy Birthday."

At the groundbreaking, the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area CEO Jason Presto showed his appreciation for the donors and anyone else who was involved in getting the project this far.

"It wasn’t easy; it certainly wasn’t fast, but nothing worthwhile ever is," he said. "I have no doubt that the effort and resources committed to this vision will pay incredible dividends for the youth, residents and the community for generations to come."

Medical Center opens: Aurora Medical Center-Fond du Lac opens to patients after completion of expansion. Here's what's new.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area is based in Berlin, with another facility in Green Lake. The Ripon location will be its third.

1912 Center

Located at 412 East 3rd Street, the former Moscow High School, built in 1912, is a three-story, 30,000 square foot building located on the edge of an historic residential neighborhood, three blocks from the City’s commercial core. It is an excellent example of classical revival style architecture built during the Progressive School Era, with classic details in brick and white terra cotta that are unique to the area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It has also been known as the Whitworth School Building and as Moscow Junior High School.

It was designed by architect Clarence H. Hubbel and built by H.J. Skinner.

This landmark is the home of Moscow’s first multi-generational, multipurpose community center. The 1912 Center was purchased from the school district by the City of Moscow in 1997 from funds donated entirely by private citizens. Phase I of the project (Great Room, Kitchen and Pall Plaza) opened to the public in October 2001. Phase II (Senior Center and Friendship Hall) opened in June of 2002.

The West Wing of the building was opened to the public for use in November of 2008. This project added a public meeting space (The Fiske Room), an arts workshop and a dressing room/restroom to the existing spaces in the facility. The Second Floor Renovation Project will add a small auditorium and a reception gallery to the usable spaces in the 1912 Center by the end of 2020. There are still 4 classrooms on the second floor and the whole 10,000 square feet of the third floor left to renovate for community use.

Moscow Buildings :15 Places Architects Must Visit in Moscow

15 Places Architects must visit in Moscow

Moscow is a powerful mix of history and edginess, full of world-famous sites and attractions. Russia ’s capital has been in existence for more than 800 years, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that this city is filled with some of the oldest fortresses, grandiose cathedrals to well sought out public transportation and futuristic skyscrapers .  Here is a list of a few Moscow buildings an architect must tick off his travel list, when in Moscow.

1. Red Square | Moscow Buildings

Centrally located in Moscow, the Red Square has inextricable links to Russian history since the 13th century.  Initially, a marketplace , the square became famous as the site of large-scale military parades and other demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Presently it is occasionally used for official ceremonies by all Russian governments. The ‘red’ in Red square is unrelated to the crimson brick buildings that surround the square. The Russian name of Red Square- “Krasnaya Ploschad” derived from the word “Krasnyi” meant beautiful in Old Russian and only later became associated with the colour red. The prominent buildings that surround the Square are Lenin’s Mausoleum, Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral to name a few.

2. The Grand Kremlin Palace

Built-in 1849, was formerly the tsar’s Moscow residence. Intended to emphasise the greatness of Russian autocracy it towers over the Borovitsky hill looming over the Moscow River. Since it is currently the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation, parts of it are restricted for the general audience. The façade has three levels of windows, however, the palace consists of only 2 floors. The opulent interiors of the palace that it was once stripped off of during the Soviet times, were refurbished in the 1990s.

The palace complex also houses the Terem Palace, which is currently the residence of the Russian President, which is not accessible to the public. The exterior of this is exuberantly decorated with brick tracery and coloured tiles is brilliantly painted in red, yellow, and orange.

3. Kuskovo Museum

The former summer country house & estate of the Russian nobility, the Sheremetev family is now home to the Russian museum of Ceramics , the world’s largest collections of ceramics & glass from various countries.

Built in the 18th century, this neoclassical Palace exudes Wes Anderson aesthetic with soft pastel colours on the exterior. The entire Estate was designed for entertainment, festivities & state occasions. The ostentatious interiors accommodate around 26 rooms of which 12 are large staterooms that completely mesmerise you, right from the marble columns of the vestibule, Flemish tapestries, carved motifs in the state bedroom and mirror covered walls in white and gold in the Dancing Hall.

The estate sprawled over 720 acres holds over 20 architectural monuments, including Italian & Dutch houses, an old church, grotto, a Petrine baroque style wooden church and numerous other buildings. It also boasts of an extensive French park, the only kind in Moscow.

4. St. Basil’s Cathedral

At the southern end of the Red Square, stands the whimsical masterpiece of Russia, the St. Basil Cathedral . Unlike any other cathedral, the columnar church is each decorated with onion domes, where none of the designs repeats onto the other. 8 column chapels cluster around the ninth& the tallest one, which houses the main nave of the church. The cathedral’s original colour was said to be white, to complement the white stone of Kremlin, while the domes were gold. However, in the 17th century, the domes began to be painted the remarkable colours that are seen today. Inside this composite church are a labyrinth of narrow vaulted corridors and vertical cylinders of the churches.

5. State historical museum | Moscow Buildings

The red brick building which echoes the St. Basil’s Cathedral resonates well into the architectural narrative of the Red Square. Its exterior is an excellent example of the Russian revival style while incorporating motifs from Muscovite architecture with its tall spires. The museum exhibits a range of relics of prehistoric tribes that lived on the territory of present-day Russia. It boasts 39 halls with unique interiors with different exhibits. The interiors are reminiscent of Russian churches and princely courts. One of the halls is built like a Byzantine cathedral and resembles a miniature Hagia Sophia from the inside.

6. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is the highest orthodox temple in the world and the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and all Russians. Located between the Kremlin and Moskva River, it is a magnificent white structure that dominates in a Neo-Russian and Byzantine architectural style. It was built over a period of 40 years from 1839 to 1883, only to be demolished in 1931 by Stalin’s command. It was to be replaced by an authoritarian 415m high structure, from which the concept of Seven Sisters, or Moscow’s 7 large skyscrapers, in Stalinist architecture, was developed. The stone façade with white marble, four columns and 5 gold-gilded domes was beautifully rebuilt, back to its former glory in the early ’90s as a place of pilgrimage.

The GUM, also known as the State department store, is an opulent shopping mall facing Red Square. The trapezoidal building features a combination of elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof, a similar style to the great 19th-century railway stations of London . After the 1812 fire, the moat near the Kremlin wall was replaced with sand and the ramparts were eliminated, along with rows of numerous shops were replaced to pave way for a large Classicist building. The building has three levels and is covered with a glass roof resting on a curved steel framework that allows the sun to stream into the space that paves way for customers, a stark contrast from a typical departmental store anywhere.

8. Izmailovo Kremlin

Apart from the main Kremlin in Moscow’s famous Red Square, there is a second, lesser-known Kremlin in the northeastern part of the city, Izmailovo Kremlin.

An unexpected wonderland, the Izmailovo Kremlin is a kaleidoscope of colourful towers. The wooden complex was built in the early 2000s as a cultural centre and marketplace, modelled after traditional Russian architectural and fairy-tale depictions of Old Russia. Set like a small village, it holds a lot of museums, antiques and handicrafts . The variety of built styles is something that keeps you captivated through and through.

9. Tsaritsyno Palace

The palace is part of a magnanimous Palace museum and park reserve in the south of Moscow. The estate was founded in 1776 and renovated extensively in 2007. The Tsaritsyno architectural monument is a major attraction with its large scale expositions in the museum that immerses you in the spirit of the 18 th century.  Built-in Neo-gothic style , the Grand Palace is a three-storey building, flanked by green-roofed towers. Just as almost any other Tsaritsyno building, this one too combines red brick with white stone. The steeples on the towers, lancet windows and arches mesmerise you even from afar.  The estate is also home to a number of pavilions, pergolas, artificial grottos, decorative bridges, Russian orthodox and a naturally inundating but maintained landscape.

10. Sandunovsky Bath House | Moscow Buildings

Immerse yourself in history by visiting the unique and opulent Russian Bathhouse. A national heritage, the Sanduny Bath House is the oldest public bathhouse in Russia. This building holds bath departments, spacious lounge zones, swimming pools and Classical Russian steam rooms, private rooms and 8 separate bathhouse areas with Jacuzzis. Built in the 1800’s, the baths received water via a specially built aqueduct from the Babyegorodskaya Dam on the Moscow River and from 700 feet of an artesian well. The electrical illumination was provided by a private electric power station. The exteriors and interiors are a mix of Baroque, Classical, Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo styles. The hallway leading up to the changing rooms are decorated in elaborate mosaics and frescos.

11. Bolshoi Theatre | Moscow Buildings

The historic 19th-century theatre originally designed by Architect Joseph Bové continues to be a major contributor to the Russian performing arts. It is also home to one of the oldest ballet and opera companies. A mighty Palladian façade with neoclassical columns and horses galloping across the intricately carved pediment enrich the exterior. Restored multiple times through the course of its existence due to fires, its imperial décor and acoustics were finally restored to their former glory in 2011. The interiors are a mix of Renaissance with Byzantine style, a cue from the alluring theatres across Europe such as Palais Garnier in Paris.

The white balconies interspersed with gold, the bright crimson draping of the interiors and a magnificent chandelier are a sight to behold.

15 PLACES IN MOSCOW- BOLSHOI THEATRE - sheet1

12. Ostankino Tower

The TV tower, built-in 1967 by Nikolai Nikitin, has been the tallest freestanding structure in Europe for over 50 years. On contrary to a tall structure relying on a deep foundation, the foundation of Ostankino’s tower was made resilient by making its foundation far heavier than the structure itself.

The concept of the silhouette of the building was an upside-down lily, with a firm stem and solid petals as supports. With 2 observation decks at 337m and 340ms, the glass and open observation decks provide breath-taking views of the entire city.

One can only begin to fathom the sheer expanse and planning of the city is mesmerizing from that height.

13. Arbat Street

An all pedestrian street where you can roam about and take in all the architecture at your own leisurely pace, Arbat is a dream come true. One of the most famous streets in Moscow, the Arbat was once a bohemian place that transitioned over the ages into being home to a lot of prominent Russian writers and poets. The huts paved the way to one – two-storey mansions with tower rooms and gardens that further developed into multi-storey tenement houses in various architectural styles. The few prominent styles were Art Nouveau, eclecticism and Avant-Garde, which are still of great interest for architectural connoisseurs.

14. Melnikov House

The eccentric house that Konstantin Melnikov built for him and his family was surrounded by a whirlwind of controversy and un-acceptance, but over the years turned into a 20th-century icon for Russian architecture. With an aesthetic different from traditional Soviet residential architecture, it was an essence of the later Russian Avant-garde. It features 2 interlocking cylindrical volumes standing 3 stories high with enough space for the family, and studio space. The windows are a series of shapes resulting in a honeycomb structure with angles that were determined by the quarter lengths of the standard local bricks. These windows provided an even dispersion of light, air and heat that beautifully lit up the interior space.

15 PLACES IN MOSCOW- MELNIKOV HOUSE - sheet1

15. The Moscow Metros | Moscow Buildings

The underground world of Moscow reads of a whole other world of amazing architecture for a daily commuter. The Metro was one of the major propaganda of the Soviet-era right from 1938, with a desire of the Soviet leaders to communicate the power of the union to citizens and visitors.

The underground palaces for the people were initially a Russian version of art Deco with some avant-garde forms that slowly transitioned to Neo-Classical with Imperial motifs. These stations are an embodiment of brilliance and a radiant past. All the stations differ from one another some are richly decorated with ornaments and bas reliefs; some are vaulted with large mosaics depicting historic events in history with gilded arches. The cost to experience them is only that of a metro ticket.

Ukraine war latest: Situation in Kharkiv 'dire' - after world took 'eye off the ball' on Ukraine

The UN says it is "deeply concerned" about the situation in northeastern Ukraine, as Russia claims advances in the region. Defence secretary Grant Shapps has criticised the world for delays in getting support to Kyiv. Submit your question on the war for our experts to answer below.

Thanks for following along - we'll be back soon.

Scroll down to catch up on the latest developments in the conflict today.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Spain on Friday for a meeting with King Felipe in Madrid, according to a royal palace statement.

Ukraine's defence minister says it is "extremely difficult" for troops to hold ground in Ukraine as they remain outgunned by Russian forces.

Rustem Umerov made a renewed plea for more shells and military supplies as Russia intensifies its offensive in the country's northeast.

"We need more artillery shells as Russia is still many times ahead," he told the Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2024 in an online address.

"Under such conditions it's extremely difficult to hold the ground."

Russia has put its submarine-launched Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile into service, the TASS state news agency reports.

Russia's state media quoted the missile's chief designer Yuri Solomonov as saying its adoption was announced in a decree on 7 May, the same day that Vladimir Putin began a new six-year term in the Kremlin.

The Bulava was developed under a programme that started in the 1990s, and is designed to be deployed on Russia's Borei-class submarines.

Last November, the defence ministry said one of those submarines had successfully test-launched the Bulava, firing it from an underwater position in the White Sea off northern Russia.

TASS said Russia's Northern and Pacific fleets now include seven Borei submarines and each carries 16 Bulavas.

For context : Vladimir Putin has warned the West since the start of the war in Ukraine that direct intervention by NATO troops there could trigger a nuclear conflict.

In March he said he did not believe the US was "rushing" towards this, but that Russia's nuclear forces were technically ready.

The world taking its "eye off the ball" led to the position we see in Kharkiv today, defence secretary Grant Shapps has said.

Speaking at the Sea Power Conference today, the minister reiterated the UK's complete support for Ukraine, saying Russia winning would be "unimaginable and unacceptable".

He said: "I've heard repeatedly, including said to me by [Ukraine's] President Zelenskyy, which is that without Britain, they wonder whether they would still have been in this war at all."

He listed the UK's commitments to Ukraine, and criticised the world for having taken its "eye off the ball" recently.

"The amount of time it's taken to get the rest of the funding through has directly led to the position we see in Kharkiv today," he said.

He added that he did not think the situation was "fatal", however, and said it was "an important lesson to the world not to lose attention about Ukraine".

Ukraine must develop the "strongest possible democracy", Antony Blinken has told officials during a working lunch in a pizzeria in Kyiv.

The US secretary of state said it was "imperative" that fighting corruption in the country continues along with fighting Russian aggression.

He also said it was important Ukraine developed "the strongest possible democracy" that reflects its citizens and attracts investment.

Mr Blinken's surprise visit follows the approval of a long-delayed foreign assistance package for Ukraine by Congress.

The package sets aside $61bn (£48.1bn) in aid for Ukraine, much of which will go toward replenishing badly depleted artillery and air defence systems.

Russian troops have captured the town of Buhruvatka in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, the defence ministry reports, according to Reuters.

The claim comes hours after Russia's TASS  news agency reported the western and northern parts of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkhiv region had fallen (see post at 9.21am).

Sky News cannot independently verify these battlefield claims.

Russia's supreme court has rejected an appeal by Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza against his 25-year jail sentence, according to Reuters.

The prominent Russian opposition figure, who has both Russian and British passports, was arrested near his Moscow home in April 2022 and convicted of treason by a court in April 2023.

He has repeatedly condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, criticised Vladimir Putin, and lobbied for Western sanctions against Moscow.

In his appeal, Mr Kara-Murza had argued that he had committed no crime and was convicted solely for exercising his right to free speech by expressing public opposition to Mr Putin and the war.

"This whole case is based on the denial of the very concepts of law, justice, and legality," he said in a written submission to the court.

"But it is also based on a crude, cynical forgery - an attempt to equate criticism of the authorities with harm to the country; to present opposition activity as 'treason'. But there is nothing new in this, either; it is what every dictatorship does."

Evacuations are under way in the town of Vovchansk, in the northeast Kharkiv region.

Local officials fear that Vovchansk's fate may mirror that of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, Ukrainian cities where fierce fighting forced Ukrainian withdrawals.

The Kremlin's forces are aiming to exploit Ukrainian weaknesses before a big batch of new military aid for Kyiv from the US and European partners arrives on the battlefield, according to analysts.

Six children have been rescued from the Russian-occupied Kherson region, the area's governor Oleksandr Prokudin has said.

Mr Prokudin said on Telegram the children - one girl and five boys - were "rescued from the camps of the Russian occupiers".

The Save Ukraine organisation worked on the rescue mission, he said.

"It was an extremely difficult rescue mission with delays at roadblocks and intimidation," the governor said.

"Fortunately, all the children are safe now. Doctors and psychologists work with them."

The children were aged between five and 12.

World news | tesla chops hundreds more bay area jobs as tech industry layoffs widen, long-term ammunition shortages enabled russia’s sweeping advance.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops were locked in intense battles with Ukrainian soldiers around the embattled town of Vovchansk in northeast Ukraine on Monday, pushing ahead with a ground offensive that opened a new front and put more pressure on overstretched Ukrainian forces.

Moscow’s renewed northeast offensive, launched late last week, was the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began.

In just two days, Moscow has captured between 100 to 125 square kilometers (38 to 47 square miles) that includes at least seven villages, most of them already depopulated, according to two open source monitoring analysts.

Vovchansk, among the largest towns in the area whose pre-war population of 17,000 had dwindled to just 2,500 before Russia renewed its ground assault last week, has emerged as a key focus of the pitched battles engulfing the Kharkiv region. By Monday, only 200 to 300 residents remained, said Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov, as Russian forces closed in from three sides.

Poorly built fortifications and long-term ammunition shortages enabled Russia’s sweeping advance in the area since Friday, local officials and soldiers said. The Kremlin’s forces were seeking to divert and distract Ukrainian troops across the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line until a big batch of new military aid for Kyiv from the U.S. and European partners arrives on the battlefield in the coming weeks and months, Ukrainian commanders and analysts said.

That makes this period a window of opportunity for Moscow and one of the most dangerous for Kyiv in the two-year war, they said. By intensifying offensive operations, Russia seeks to stretch Ukraine’s forces thin and forge breakthroughs.

Russian forces claimed to have taken an additional 90 square kilometers (35 square miles), which has not been independently confirmed.

Opening a new front from two points along the border with the Russian region of Belgorod was the easiest tactic to pin down and divert Ukrainian forces from heavy battles raging in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Russia’s most sought-after prize.

“The enemy identified the most geographically convenient place … the state border line,” said Yurii Federenko, commander of the ACHILLES battalion of the 92nd brigade. His unit was among others rotated into the northeast from the Donetsk region to stabilize the northeast front, he said.

He fears a similar front may be opened in the Sumy region, which also shares a border with Russia.

The string of villages captured along the contested gray zone, where enemy shelling precludes the building of fortifications, were also the easiest for Moscow’s forces to nab. Their momentum will likely slow as they approach better fortified settlements, Ukrainian commanders said.

Small batches of U.S. military aid have started to trickle into the front line in the form of much needed artillery, said Federenko, whose unit received some of the aid. But it will take at least two months before incoming supplies will meet Kyiv’s needs to hold the line, he said. Until they arrive, Ukraine won’t be able to seize the battlefield initiative, he said.

“They now have an opportunity to attack us while we cannot properly reply,” he said.

Russia’s offensive seeks to take advantage of this window of time. “In order to achieve success, in my opinion, in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the enemy needed to spread … our defense forces. Accordingly, the enemy started the campaign in Kharkiv region specifically,” Federenko said.

The Kharkiv incursion has effectively pinned Ukrainian forces in the region, while potentially drawing precious reserves away from heavy battles in the Avdiivka and Chasiv Yar areas of the Donetsk region, where Russia’s advance has been far more significant and strategically important.

Ukrainian local officials said they feared Vovchansk’s fate may mirror that of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, Ukrainian cities where fierce fighting and scorched earth tactics forced Ukrainian withdrawals.

Russian forces were inching closer to Vovchansk, and heavy battles were ongoing on the town’s outskirts. Using assault infantry units Russian forces are attempting to secure positions in three directions, as Ukrainian forces attempt to dislodge them using firepower. Ukrainian commanders describe the battles as dynamic and complicated.

Russian troops have so far entrenched themselves in the villages of Strilecha, Pylna, Borysivka, Krasne, Oliynykove, Mrakovets, Pletenivka, and from there were launching attacks near Hlyboke Zelene Hatysche, and Buchansk.

The capture of the Donetsk city of Avdiivka in February opened a door for the Kremlin’s troops to push westward, deeper into Donetsk. Russia illegally annexed Donetsk and three other regions in 2022 shortly after it invaded Ukraine, and taking control of all of Donetsk is one of the Kremlin’s main war goals.

If Ukraine isn’t able to halt Moscow’s advance, it could create conditions for a possible attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Russian emergency services on Monday finished clearing the rubble in the region’s capital city of Belgorod, where a section of a residential building collapsed following what authorities said was Ukrainian shelling.

Fifteen bodies were pulled from the rubble, Belgorod regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said, and 27 other people were wounded.

Another three people in the city of Belgorod were killed by shelling late Sunday, he said.

Yevgeny Poddubny, a usually well-connected military correspondent for Russia’s state TV corporation VGTRK, said in a recent Telegram post that the Kharkiv assault marked the beginning of “a new phase.”

“We’re pushing the enemy back from the border, destroying the enemy in order to deprive the Kyiv regime of the opportunity to use relatively cheap rockets to attack Belgorod,” he said.
