Kuttralam Main Falls

Kuttralam main falls / courtallam main falls – the spa of south india.

Kuttralam situated in Tenkasi District is popularly called the “Spa of South India”. The beauty of this exotic location is enriched by thundering waterfalls, vast stretch of greenery and pristine surroundings. Kutralam is adorned with ancient temples and many other places of interest. Also known as the herbal hill, water flowing from the magnificent waterfalls is said to have medicinal values owing to which many health resorts and clinics have come up in and around the town. Several perennial rivers such as Thamirabarani River, Chittar River, Manimuthar River and Pachaiyar River originate is this region of Tirunelveli.

Courtallam Location

Courtallam/Kuttralam is a panchayat town situated at an elevation of 160 metres on the Western Ghats in Tenkasi District of Tamil Nadu.

Reference to the Literature

The word Kutralam is derived from the word “Kuru aal” meaning dwarf banyan trees. The region came to be known as Kutralam as the forests of this area were full of dwarf banyan trees. The famous poet Thiurkudarasappa Kavirayar glorifies the beauty and magnificence of this quaint town located near Thenkasi in the South of Tamil Nadu. It also finds a place in Sangam Literature, where its beauty is compared to the beauty of a woman.

Major Waterfalls in Kuttralam

There are nine major waterfalls in Kutralam. People from across the country visit this place to soak in the essence of herbs and rejuvenate in the waters of Kutralam falls.

Courtallam Main Falls (Peraruvi)

One of the prime attractions, Peraruvi is the biggest among the nine falls. At Kuttralam Main Falls, waterfalls from a height of 60 metres and slows down due to a natural crater named Pongumakadal (19 metres deep). The water flows through rocks with sculptors of Shiva Lingams and various other Gods. This aspect along with the healing properties that the water possesses, makes a bath in the falls a truly divine and refreshing experience. It is also normal practice to comfort oneself with a body massage after the bath. During peak season, the falls become crowded and tourists line up in queues for a bath. The huge falls can accommodate around 300 people simultaneously.

Small Falls (Chitraruvi)

Chitraruvi is a small falls lying adjacent to the kuttralam main falls. A walk up the hill from Chitraruvi leads to other falls like Shenbaga Devi and Thenaruvi. Tourists can have a milder shower here as the water flow is very thin. There are facilities for men and women to bathe separately.

Shenbagadevi Falls

Trekking through the Chitaruvi Forest for a distance of 2.5 kilometres and at a height of 40 feet above the Chitaruvi Falls is the Shenbagadevi Falls. The water at Shenbagadevi Falls flows through Shenbaga trees. There is a temple here dedicated to Shenbagadevi Amman. During full moon days, a throng of pilgrims visit this temple.

Thenaruvi (Honey Falls)

Thenaruvi is at a distance of 3 kilometres from the main falls. It is 40 metres high falls cascading between two large stones. The Falls gets its name from the honeycombs found on the hills. The horseshoe-shaped waterfall is at the end of a trail that find its way through dense woods and steep mountain paths. The trek is risky and so the place is restricted for public.

Aintharuvi (Five Falls) in Kuttralam

Yet another popular spot in Kutralam, Aintharuvi is located at 4 kilometres from Kutralam town. As the name suggests, the falls cascades down through five separate sections to become one stream is it flows downhill. Of the five sections, two are allotted to women and three for men to bathe. Tourists can also visit the Eco Park and boat house around the area apart from several popular nearby temples.

Pazhathotta Aruvi (Orchard Falls)

Found above the Aintharivu, flowing from the orchard above and surrounded by picturesque aura is the Pazhathotta Aruvi. It is also referred to as the VIP Falls as entry was permitted only to politicians and bureaucrats. However, entry is now restricted to everyone.

Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi (Old Courtallam Falls)

At a distance of around 6 kilometres from the Main Falls is the Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi also called as Shivamathungai Falls. The Falls were made suitable for bathing by changing the course of water which originally flowed into a valley formed between two large rocks. Steps have been cut into the rocks to make it safe for bathing under this Falls which flows down from a height of 200 metres. There are separate areas for men and women to have a bath along with oil massages.

Puli Aruvi (Tiger Falls)

Puli Aruvi gets its name from the fact that it was a watering hole for tigers in the past. It is a mild waterfall formed on private property, around 2 kilometres from the Courtallam bus stand. The water flowing down accumulates in a lake and then is streamed along canals for irrigation. Sastha Temple, a bathing Ghat and an old palace which now is private property is found near the Falls.

The Private Falls

There is another small falls found above the Five Falls inside the Government Horticulture park, but it is not open to public. The Main Falls, Five Falls and Courtallam Falls can be reached by road, however, Shenbaga Waterfalls and Honey Falls can be reached only on foot by mountain trekking.

Ecotourism a way to emergent courtallam

Profile image of Interal Res journa Managt Sci Tech

Ecotourism aspires in all cases to achieve sustainable development results. However, it is important to clarify that all tourism activities – be they geared to holidays, business conferences, congresses or fairs, health, adventure or ecotourism – should aim to be sustainable. This means that the planning and development of tourism infrastructure, its subsequent operation and also its marketing should focus on environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability criteria. This concept should be followed in courtalam where more than 30,000 to 40,000 tourists visit per day in the month of June to September. As well as more than 200000 Iyappan devotes take bath in the month of December & January.

Salama, A. M. (Ed.) (2007). Ecotourism and Ecolodges: Sustainable Planning and Design for Environmentally Friendly Tourism Facilities. Open House International 32(4), 1-118. Increasingly, people are abandoning traditional vacation for a new type of tourism that gives them the sense of nature. Trekking in mountains, bird watching, archaeological digs, desert and photo safaris, scuba diving are some new types of vacations that attract tourists to travel to relatively remote and unspoiled areas. This type of travel is referred to as nature-based travel, ecotourism, or environmentally sustainable tourism. These terms are used interchangeably to reflect this trend in the travel industry. While many studies continuously attempt to differentiate between the terms used to reflect this type of travel, the general concern is to address the dialectic relationships between the natural and the man made, the visitors and tourists and the local population, and tradition and modernity. The generic concept of environmentally sustainable tourism has emerged in parallel to the realization of the potential benefits in combining people interest in nature with their concern for the environment. It is a responsible way of travel; an alternative to traditional travel, but it is not for everyone. It appeals to people who love nature and indigenous cultures. It allows those people to enjoy an attraction or a locality and ensures that local cultures and environments are unimpaired. As the environmentally sustainable tourism industry expands world-wide, well planned, ecologically sensitive facilities are in high demand that can be met with ecolodges: small scale facilities that provide tourists with the opportunity of being in close contact with nature and local culture. In response to this theme, research papers in this issue of Open House International attempt to answer the primary question: How much change in or alternations of natural and cultural environments will be acceptable? They explore sustainable planning and design for tourism by debating, analyzing, and visioning a wide spectrum of issues, with a focus on the developments taking place in biologically sensitive areas, whether desert, forest, tropical coasts, or rural environments. Interestingly, they cover the planet Earth from Australia through the Arab World and Turkey to Argentina and Chile. An important shared aspect in these papers is that emphasis is placed upon integrating people, nature, and local economy into responsive development processes while offering lessons on how such integration may take place. Ecotourism focuses on the enhancement and maintenance of natural ecosystem through tourism. In the 21 st century, travel and tourism have become world's fastest growing industries and are the major source of foreign exchange earnings for many developing countries. Ecotourism has become a growing niche market within this larger travel industry. For the last two decades, it has not only substituted mass tourism, but also has converged the biodiversity conservation and the socioeconomic development of local community. Now-a-days, government and non-government agencies promote community based ecotourism into interior regions to develop the livelihood of the local people. In practice, ecotourism has often failed to deliver the expected benefits to the local community due to a number of factors such as the shortages of the financial and social capital within the community, lack of mechanisms for a fair distribution of the economic benefits of ecotourism, and insecurity in connection with acquisition of lands. A research was conducted on Gopegarh Heritage and Nature Ecotourism Centre (GHNEC), Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal to find out the success and failure stories of ecotourism policy. It reveals that due to the lack of proper infrastructure, the benefits of ecotourism do not reach to the people it aimed for. Introduction In the 21 st century, tourism is one of the fastest growing markets and a major source of foreign exchange earnings for many developing countries. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) reports that 4.4% international tourism grew annually between the years 2013 to 2014. Easy and quick economic earnings from tourism without much investment has captured the attention of most countries and led to its huge popularity and acceptability. However, such a global growth of tourism causes a significant threat to the cultural and biological diversity. During the late 20 th century, many academics and scholars pointed towards the destructive effect of tourism on biodiversity. Thus, it has become of utmost importance that the tourism industry must be concerned about the environment and its sustainability. With that concern, an alternative form of tourism also has begun to take shape. Broadly defined, this 'alternative tourism' includes 'forms of tourism that are consistent with natural, social, and community values, and which allow both hosts and guests to enjoy positive and worthwhile interaction and shared experiences' (Eadington & Smith 1992). This new product of tourism has taken the attention of scholars concerned with recent agendas to link conservation and development) proposed for one of the most influential definitions on environment-friendly tourism or ecotourism-Travelling to relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated natural areas with the specific objectives of studying, admiring, and enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as any existing cultural manifestations (both past and present) found in these areas.

International Journal of Scientific Research

Tourism is an industry which employees the leisure time of the people in a useful way. It is a major engine of economic growth in most parts of the world. The immense potential of tourism is particularly relevant for developing nations like India. In respect of India the abundance of extremely serene environments and also quite a large number of historical and religious locations is an additional attraction, unlike most other parts of the world. This favorable situation is more applicable in respect of Kerala state in Indian subcontinent, often referred to as 'Gods own Country' in view of its scenic locations and conducive geographic, climatic and other conditions. Along with the appreciable growth in tourism over the last two decades or more in India and the high growth prospects of the tourism industry, there are growing apprehensions regarding the sustainability of the industry in view of the adverse environmental impacts of tourism. Both the favourable and adverse aspects as above are probably more applicable to 'Gods own Country' than any other state in India. As it is widely recognized that of the different types of tourism, the nature-friendly tourism model viz. 'Ecotourism' alone can be sustainable for development in the long run, this paper analyzes the prospects and challenges of ecotourism with reference to 'Thenmala' ecotourism project in Kollam district of Kerala, and suggests strategies for sustainable development of tourism.

Vaibhav Verma

Ecotourism may be regarded as a management tool that aims to reconcile both conservation and development goals. Tourism based on the Himichal Pradesh Region’s pristine landscape as well as historical sites offers great potential for not only generating income but also introducing the region to potential investors. The region, however, must establish a tourism destination identity in order to compete for visitor's ‘dollars’. This research is a preliminary study which identifies the potential for ecotourism development in Shimla. A semi-structured questionnaire was the primary data collection method used to capture the opinions, interests and feelings among the travelers and to gain an understanding of visitor profiles. Their responses also gave an insight into various constraints in terms of security, infrastructure, information or any other capacity building needs required for future Eco-tourism development.

Ecotourism is a new concept in the tourism industry of India, which essentially developed since past 20 years. However, India's cultural and natural potential for ecotourism is well established. Over many neighboring countries, India has great advantages for ecotourism with many scenic attractions and diversified ecology. Among other destinations, Kodagu district of Karnataka state has emerged as a new ecotourism destination with the unique natural landscape, multiform fauna and flora species along with diversified culture. Since ecotourism was not quickly developed in Kodagu district, it brought many benefits to local community and natural environment. However, it also caused numerous negative impacts for natural resources, ecology and local environment. This study is conducted to examine the positive and negative environmental impacts of ecotourism in Kodagu district. The study involved the participations of the experts who have visited and settled in the district. By using the questionnaire method as data collection, the study analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data. The canvassed questionnaire method is employed to obtain empirical data from the expert's interview like local community leaders, chief of Non Government Organizations (NGO), owners of travel agenesis and chief or employer of local authorities. Furthermore, the document analysis method is used to acquire the primary data from prior literature and public materials. The study focuses on analyzing collected data in order to generalize the environmental impacts of ecotourism in Kodagu district. The result of study provides a summary of key findings and improving recommendations relating to ecotourism and environmental impacts management in the district.

Ecotourism has become an emerging form of alternative tourism as it provides authentic experiences to nature lovers. This paper discusses on the concept of ecotourism and the characteristics of ecotourism. The primary objective of promoting ecotourism is to conserve the environment and improve the socioeconomic well being of local people. The present research article found out that ecotourism directly provides benefits to the people living in the concerned areas in the form of income, employment, decent facilities and dignified social life. The impacts of ecotourism on society, local economy and environment are complex. The paper made an enquiry into the current scenario of ecotourism in Kerala and its effects on local economy, society and environment.
