Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre represent one of the most beautiful, unique and incredible areas of the whole Mediterranean. This stretch of coast of Liguria, about 10 km long between Genoa and La Spezia , is so called because here there are five wonderful seaside villages immersed in unspoiled nature.

The five villages, in order from West to East, are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They are well known all over the world and it is not possible to think of one without thinking of all the others. But each of these villages has its own history, its peculiarities and its secrets. Together they represent one of the most popular Italian tourist resorts.

In fact, in 1997 they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

These are picturesque villages perched on the rock and overlooking the sea. Wonderful agglomerations of colorful tower-houses developed vertically, crossed by small alleys and alleys almost to form a labyrinth where authentic views and breathtaking views are hidden.

cinque-terre

The frame all around is uncontaminated nature where man has intervened over the centuries with intelligence and respect. You will admire the traditional Ligurian terraces where the locals collect the best fruits of their land: citrus fruits, olives and grapes with which they produce an exceptional wine.

You can go to the discovery of Cinque Terre National Park through its fascinating paths . First of all the Blue Path.

Then of course the sea: a difficult and indented coast where some beaches are set. Everywhere a transparent, clean, crystalline water.

The Cinque Terre are an ideal destination to spend an unforgettable weekend, where to bring a special person and take beautiful photographs.

The Villages of the Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre villages are Monterosso , Vernazza , Corniglia , Manarola is Riomaggiore .

These five villages are quite close but over the centuries they have been separated from each other by a difficult and difficult to navigate territory. They therefore have their own unique peculiarities, their differences, their traditions.

Do not believe those who say that it is enough to see one of the villages to get an idea of the others too. The Cinque Terre should all be visited, and honestly it is very difficult to say which one to start with.

monterosso-cinque-terre

Monterosso is the village of the Cinque Terre to the west, the first one coming from Genoa.

Monterosso al Mare represents the oldest part, while Fegina , constitutes its recent tourist and seaside development.

It is generally considered the most accessible among the five: it is the easiest to reach by car, the one with the most accommodations to stay overnight, restaurants and bars to relax in and the only one with wide sandy beaches for the whole family.

In addition to being accessible, Monterosso is a fascinating village and the wonderful nature that surrounds it has also inspired a poet like Eugenio Montale . During the long summers that the poet spent here, he wrote many lines of his poems dedicated to this enchanted place.

vernazza-drone

Vernazza is the village of the Cinque Terre best known and most photographed . The only one among the five to be counted between “Most beautiful villages in Italy” . His image is often used as a symbol of this entire territory. Without a doubt it is a magical place that must be visited at least once in a lifetime.

Life here develops around the square near the port. All around a labyrinth of alleys and alleys typical of the towns of Liguria that hide glimpses to photograph as well as the charm of a millenary history.

The typical and colorful tower-houses of this part of Liguria frame the famous port of Vernazza, the church and the fortified castle.

corniglia

Corniglia is the central village of the Cinque Terre and the only one that does not have direct access to the sea. In fact, it rises on a rock about 100 meters above sea level, which is why it is known as “Balcony of the Cinque Terre” .

Among the Cinque Borghi, Corniglia is undoubtedly the least visited, but it is the one with the better panorama and the one where to enjoy a peaceful holiday away from hordes of tourists.

manarola

Manarola is the smallest and probably the most picturesque of the Cinque Terre villages and, thanks to the easy connection with Riomaggiore, it is also one of the most visited.

Manarola has an ancient tradition in the production of oil and wine. Today, in fact, this town is known not only for its beauty, but also for the wine that is produced in the surrounding area, such as sciacchetrà.

At Christmas it’s a perfect destination: a huge one has been set up since 1961 bright nativity scene on the back of the hill . A show not to be missed.

  • Riomaggiore

riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is the easternmost village of the Cinque Terre.

This village is an extraordinary agglomeration of pastel-colored tower-houses overlooking the sea. Typical houses of the villages of Liguria crossed by a labyrinth of alleys, stairways, alleys and hidden corners.

So beautiful and fascinating that even the famous painter of the Macchiaioli stream, Telemaco Signorini , has imprinted Riomaggiore on his canvases.

La via dell'amore

via dell'amore

The Via dell’Amore, or Path of Love, is a picturesque trail in the Cinque Terre that winds along the coastal cliffs, connecting the charming villages of Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The route, on a paved and railing-equipped road, is about 1km long and easy to walk.

This short stretch is only the initial part of the “Blue Trail” that connects all the villages of the Cinque Terre.

The trail winds gently along the rocky coastline, offering spectacular views of the sparkling Ligurian or Ligurian Sea below and the wild, unspoiled landscape stretching to the horizon.

Although sections of the Way of Love have been damaged by landslides in recent years, efforts to restore and reopen the trail are steadily progressing, and an adapted trail that includes parts of the Way of Love allows visitors to continue to experience the magic of this beloved path.

Full reopening is scheduled for July 2024, and, in the meantime, it is still possible to explore the Cinque Terre area on Foot along the Cinque Terre hiking trail network.

The Cinque Terre Trails

If you’re looking for a blend of scenic beauty, rich culture, and exciting physical challenge, you won’t be able to resist the allure of the Cinque Terre hiking trails.

How to get to the Cinque Terre

treni-cinque-terre

The Cinque Terre is one of the few Italian destinations where it is recommended to move by public transport . Getting around by car, especially during the summer, can become really uncomfortable and complicated.

However, both solutions are possible and here is all the information you will need to discover this wonderful area.

Cinque Terre by Train

The train is undoubtedly the most practical, fastest and cheapest way to move between the villages of the Cinque Terre. All 5 towns have convenient railway stations on the Genoa-La Spezia line, where train runs are quite frequent.

Throughout the year a regional train passes every half hour and, in addition, in the summer, from March to November, the trains of the line also come into service 5 Terre Express on the La Spezia-Levanto section.

To get an idea of distances and travel times, know that the journey between Monterosso, the westernmost village, and Riomaggiore, the easternmost village, is just 14 minutes.

All stations are, moreover, very close to the center of the villages. Exploring the Cinque Terre by train is a piece of cake!

treni-cinque-terre

Traveling by train is the most efficient and scenic way to explore the Cinque Terre. To facilitate your travel, you will find the Train schedule and prices for 2023 in this guide.

Cinque Terre by car

Those who love to travel by car can get to the Cinque Terre easily. The road in many places is spectacular, but you may encounter some discomfort.

In general, you need to reach the Cinque Terre coastal road by exiting at Santo Stefano Magra from the convenient A12 motorway that connects Genoa and La Spezia .

Manarola and Riomaggiore, the villages further east, are the easiest to reach because the road is convenient and offers a beautiful view. Proceeding to Corniglia and Vernazza the road becomes more tortuous and rather narrow.

But the real problem with car travel is parking. The Cinque Terre villages are inaccessible by car and have a limited number of parking spaces. In the high season it is really difficult to find a place and, even if you do, the fare is quite expensive.

Cinque Terre by boat

Moving between the Cinque Terre by boat is undoubtedly the most suggestive way and that gives an unmissable show . Seeing the villages hidden in the inlets, surrounded by luxuriant nature, appear in the distance is truly exciting.

The boat service is in service only during the summer, from April to November.

The boats leave from the port of La Spezia, connect Portovenere , the Cinque Terre villages and reach Levanto and Portofino .

Tickets can be purchased conveniently at the ticket offices near the docking points.

Where to sleep in the Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre over the years have become one of the most visited tourist resorts in Italy and this has given a strong boost to the development of accommodation to stay, both within the villages and in the surroundings.

You will not find large hotels with many rooms. Fortunately, there is no room for large structures in this area. You will find small indeed guest houses, B&B and apartments obtained from the ancient houses of the historic centers.

Despite the numerous accommodations that have sprung up over the years, the number of beds is not always sufficient to cope with the many visitors who want to stay here. Especially during the summer season.

It is much better to plan your trip to Cinque Terre well in advance . You will be assured of finding a place and securing the best value-for-money accommodations.

The rates, in fact, are generally quite high.

But in which village of the Cinque Terre to sleep?

In reality, there is no better village than another to stay in. Take a look at the insights into the locations and choose the one you like best.

Then choose the accommodation that suits you by looking at the photos and the price. Location is not important; all the villages are within a few minutes’ walk, and the accommodations are all very close to each other.

Where to go to the sea in the Cinque Terre

spiagge-cinque-terre

The villages of the Cinque Terre certainly do not represent the destinations par excellence for a holiday dedicated to life on the beach and tanning.

The coast in this area of Liguria is quite indented, rocky and difficult. Within this difficult area, however, there are several small beaches where you can swim in a particular and suggestive setting.

Those looking for the best compromise between the discovery of the villages and a few days on the beach can find a Fegina , the modern part of Monterosso, a beautiful strip of sand that has even been mentioned by the magazine “Forbes” as one of the 25 sexiest beaches in the world.

Also in Monterosso, you will find a beautiful beach even in front of the ancient village.

Corniglia, even if it is the only village that does not have direct access to the sea, is a strategic point to reach some of the best beaches of the Cinque Terre:

You should especially visit the Guvano beach , one of most beautiful beaches in all of Liguria . It is a mixture of sand and white pebbles, the water is clean and clear and surrounded by lush nature.

Cinque Terre

Set amid some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the planet, these five ingeniously constructed fishing villages can bolster the most jaded of spirits. A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, Cinque Terre isn't the undiscovered Eden it once was but, frankly, who cares? Sinuous paths traverse seemingly impregnable cliff sides, while a 19th-century railway line cut through a series of coastal tunnels ferries the footsore from village to village. Thankfully cars were banned over a decade ago.

How to discover Cinque Terre, away from the crowds

Cinque Terre Italy

Visited Rome and Venice and looking for your next Italian destination?

Between Florence and Genoa lies a string of five fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each connected by its own scenic trail. The Cinque Terre, translated as ‘five lands,’ dates back to the early medieval period and is considered by many as the most romantic stretch of the Italian Riviera.

These pretty-as-a-postcard towns are dotted along old cobbled streets overlooking crystal clear waters and are no more than a two-hour walk from each other. What’s great about Cinque Terre is that it takes you away from the commercialism of some of Italy ’s busier cities, each with its own heritage and dialect and surrounded by a ruggedly stunning stretch of coastline. And, importantly, even if you’re only in Italy for a week or so, the area is still super easy to visit! (Check out this guide   to find out how.)

Cinque Terre Italy

But, don’t worry, there are still plenty of hidden locations which take you away from the crowds. Below, we share our top recommendations for experiencing this beautiful area in your own private paradise.

Sentiero Rosso

One of the main reasons people love Cinque Terre so much is for its limited road access. Admittedly this makes it a little less convenient to get around, but it does mean that the area is totally traffic-free. If you’d rather not travel by train on a hot day, hiking is a popular alternative, and the Sentiero Rosso, also known as the ‘red trail,’ is a great choice.

Cinque Terre Italy hiking

If you want to complete the entire trail, you’ll be looking at around nine to 12 hours of solid walking (but with plenty of shortcuts to make it as long or short as you like). The Sentiero Rosso also has the added advantage of being far flatter and more tree-covered than the blue trail, so you don’t need to worry about sweating up a storm. Bars and restaurants dotted along the route also provide a host of welcome refreshments to help you cool down.

VISIT CINQUE TERRE ON THIS MAGICAL 8-DAY SMALL GROUP TOUR

When tourists come to Cinque Terre, it’s unsurprising that they expect to see Italians populating its streets. But being the tourist mecca that it is, this isn’t always the case.

Lerici differs from Cinque Terre’s five main towns in that it doesn’t appear to be inundated with tourists. Why? Because it remains less well-known and is not connected by the train line, making it more difficult to access.

Lerici Cinque Terre Italy

A lack of tourists means it has been lucky enough to maintain its status as an active fishing village, populated by, you guessed it, fisherman! Lerici prides itself on being home to a bunch of authentic Italian restaurants, a community of local boat owners, and its own traditional medieval castle offering a beautiful view over the harbor and an opportunity to watch the sun go down.

RELATED: 6 WAYS TO TRAVEL LIKE A LOCAL IN ITALY

Although not technically classed as one of Cinque Terre’s five towns, here you will still find a pretty array of candy-colored houses to admire. Lerici is also home to one of the area’s best outdoor markets, selling everything from fine Italian meats and cheeses to fresh fish straight from the harbor. (And if you love Italian food, you’ll love this guide to unique Italian dishes to try, by region!)

If you are hoping to visit this quaint little town, there is not a direct train that goes to Lerici, but you can easily take the L or S bus from La Spezia.

Vernazza, Liguria Cinque Terre Italy

Vernazz: much busier than laid-back Lerici

Buranco Agriturismo

Hidden in one of Cinque Terre’s five villages, Monterosso, lies one of the nicest little vineyards you will find in this part of Italy. Buranco Agriturismo, which is just a short walk from the Monterosso Old Town, allows visitors to escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hub, considered by many for its size and location, as the capital of the Cinque Terre.

The vineyard has a delightful tasting area with an inviting outdoor patio where you can sip on a variety of delicious wines, many of which are local to Cinque Terre, including Sciacchetrà, Magiöa DOC, and  Cinque Terre DOC. Appetizers consisting of local delicacies are also served alongside for your tasting pleasure.

As well as being lucky enough to experience all of this from the vineyard’s private location, guests also receive the full Italian experience, complete with Italian music and a backdrop of beautiful lemon and olive gardens. The vineyard also produces grappa, olive oil, Limoncino, and honey, in addition to wine which are all available to purchase.

Porto Venere

The starting point of the Sentiero Rosso (red trail), Porto Venere is a pretty harbor town situated near the southern border of Liguria and, like Cinque Terre, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. As with Lerici, this little town has no railway access, instead linked by bus to La Spezia, making it a peaceful alternative to Cinque Terre’s five main villages.

Porto Venere Cinque Terre Italy

Porto Venere by night

The area is, however, fairly popular with daytrippers. Being a fairly tiny town, most of the tourist attractions can be seen in a day.

A popular site is the Chiesa di S. Pietro, an old church built in 1277. The building sits on the remains of a sixth-century chapel, of which traces can still be seen. The island of Palmaria, located just off the coast of Portovenere, is a marine reserve and is also popular with tourists, particularly those who are nature-lovers or swimmers.

Since Portovenere guards the mouth of the Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of Poets), many locations also provide excellent water views, including the Genoese fortress, part of the Castello Doria, which is home to a gorgeous terrace and popular for lunchtime picnics.

And speaking of picnics, food enthusiasts should be sure to hunt down one of Liguria’s specialties, focaccia, which you can find at various restaurants, waterfront cafes and markets dotted throughout the town. I would personally recommend the focaccia at Il Timone. Delightful.

How to Experience Cinque Terre Like a Local

By Kasia Dietz

Drone photo of Manarola fishing village in the famous Cinque Terre ItalyIt is the beauty of the Five Fishing Villages...

The moment I first set foot along the craggy coast of Monterosso al Mare, the westernmost village of the Cinque Terre, I knew I had discovered a unique paradise. It was early October 2007 and far off in the distance, the clifftop villages belonging to this unparalleled Ligurian landscape beckoned with their vivid colors, illuminated by the late summer light. After a few days spent devouring fried anchovies , focaccia, pesto, and breathtaking views, I also quickly understood why Cinque Terre, a UNESCO site since 1997, attracted tourists en masse.

It was only after meeting and marrying a native of this land, and therefore becoming a perpetual guest, that I learned the soulful secrets that day trippers aren’t privy to. I soon understood why these thousand-year-old villages set upon precipitous cliffs paint such a pretty picture. The characteristic manmade terraces called  poggi  were built to cultivate vineyards and olives, two of the region’s specialties. By a stroke of luck, local administration forbade construction in the 1960s, contributing to the preservation of these one-of-a-kind lands.

The beach on the craggy coast of Monterosso al Mare.

The beach on the craggy coast of Monterosso al Mare.

Unlike the posh port town of Portofino made popular by well-heeled jet setters in the 1950s, or fishing village-turned- Italian Riviera resort town Santa Margherita, Cinque Terre remained a secret to the masses until the mid 1990s. Prior to that, it was fellow Italians and thrill-seeking German and Swiss hikers that first mingled with the local fishermen and farmers. When American travel writer Rick Steves became enchanted with these remote lands, once only accessible by sea or by train, Cinque Terre landed on everyone’s bucket list.

With the maze of village streets off limits to cars aside from an occasional taxi, Cinque Terre is best reached via train and explored on foot or by boat. Hop aboard a ferry and hop off at any of the five villages at your leisure. These sea shuttles even venture as far as Portovenere, just outside the Cinque Terre. Sunset boat tours are another stellar way to discover Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Hiking between these villages carved into the cliffs is an adventurous affair, boasting some of the most dazzling views of the Italian Riviera. I recommend sticking to the marked paths and heeding any notices of path closures. The iconic and least difficult trail Via dell'Amore or “Path of Love” connecting Manarola and Riomaggiore recently reopened, but only to guided tours due to crowd control. It’s no secret that Cinque Terre is battling over-tourism, with upwards of three million tourists stomping the fragile grounds annually.

To enjoy these soulful lands more authentically, avoid the selfie-stick-toting day trippers and visit in the off-season. The villages wake up from their winter slumber just before the Easter holidays and remain open for business until late October. A favorable Mediterranean climate makes early spring an ideal time to visit, with less congested hiking paths leading to swoon-worthy photo ops, shorter waits for top dining haunts, and even a chance to score a spot in the sun. While most of the private Monterosso beach clubs don’t open until May and close in September, the public stretches of pebbled beach invite sun worshippers all year round. Just bring a beach towel and snorkeling gear. Come July and August, there’s no better spot to hide from the hoards of visitors than beneath a parasol. Be sure to book ahead or on the morning of. The late summer is equally enchanting after schools reopen and family tourism tapers.

La Cantina di Miky

La Cantina di Miky

Vernazza and Manarola are often considered the prima donnas of Cinque Terre, but Monterosso al Mare wins for personality, with the most to offer visitors from where to bed down to local wining and family-run dining. Sleeping in a B&B or family-run hotel is undoubtedly the best way to live like a local. High above the clamor of Monterosso’s village life, Casa di Andrea oozes with charm and garden views. Centrally located 3-star Hotel la Colonnina boasts renovated rooms and a roof deck while 4-star Porto Roca high on the bluff offers the most sophisticated lodging, with an infinity pool and refined restaurant included. For a real dose of rural life dotted by olive trees and local produce, Agriturismo Missanega reachable by car, is the place to call home. The only 5-star address, Grand Hotel Portovenere isn’t exactly part of the Cinque Terre, but it’s close enough.

On the food front, family-run gastronomic Ristorante Miky has been impressing its guests since 1980, while offshoot La Cantina di Miky serves up innovative local fare in a more casual seaside setting. In Monterosso’s old town, Il Casello concocts savory Ligurian specialties the likes of stuffed anchovies and trofie al pesto . There’s no more scenic spot for dinner or an aperitivo than Torre Aurora named for the 16 th -century tower it inhabits. A few steps away, Ristorante L'Ancora della Tortuga vies for the views with its sweeping outdoor terrace and cliffside dining. Follow the classical music to Enoteca da Eliseo for a sampling of regional wines or head to Enoteca Internazionale and pair vino with gourmet bruschetta at the village’s oldest wine shop. If you’re feeling adventurous, just west of Monterosso, Casino in the year-round town of Levanto makes for a perfect dinner or drink stop, and can be reached by train or on foot. For some of the best coastline views, brave the two-hour hike.

Each of the five villages merits a wander through the historic center and up along the tangle of paths that lead to clandestine eateries. In Vernazza, it’s Ittiturismo Pirasca overlooking the variegated landscape, and long-standing Ristorante Belforte nestled into the bluff that offers both appetizing views and dishes. In Corniglia, the smallest of the hilltop villages and also the least visited, Ittiturismo SP4488 makes the trek up the nearly 400 steps well worth it. A fast favorite for anyone who discovers this cliffside haunt, Trattoria dal Billy is reason enough to plot a trip to Manarola. When it comes to fine dining Ligurian style, the casually chic Rio Bistrot in Riomaggiore certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Regardless of when you decide to venture to Cinque Terre, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the authenticity and charm of these five animated villages. Just give yourself more than three days to enjoy morning cappuccinos, cannoli (the Ligurian variety), long ambles, and maybe even a game of bocce with the locals.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Cinque Terre in Italy

cinqueterre.it blog roadaffair hiking-view-cinque-terre-italy-

Sitting along the Italian Riviera, the Cinque Terre is a stunning outdoor destination with plenty of magnificent coastal scenery. For those looking to stretch their legs after days admiring churches and museums in Florence or Milan, visiting Cinque Terre can be a refreshing experience. It’s ideal for those looking to hike in Italy, people who can’t put their camera down and anyone who enjoys fresh seafood.

One of Italy’s most impossibly beautiful corners, here’s our guide to the Cinque Terre, full of travel tips for the Cinque Terre and how to make the most of a visit.

A Brief Background of Cinque Terre

The name Cinque Terre means “Five Lands”, referring to five beautiful villages that sit along the coast of Liguria, often referred to as the Italian Riviera. Nestled within the hilly coastal terrain, these villages were quite remote for much of their lives. Over the centuries, locals built terraces into the hillside to help them farm against their steep hill backdrop.

Although the villages overlook the Ligurian Sea, traditionally fishing was not the main trade for the villages of Cinque Terre. Instead, the main trade in Cinque Terre was growing olives and winemaking. These practices were only possible due to the manmade terraces, as they created the right conditions for the grapes and olives to grow.

Today, the Cinque Terre relies a lot on the money brought in by tourism. The area around the villages and surrounding country with its many hiking trails has been made a national park and offers some of the best hiking in the world . And, for its significant cultural and environmental importance, the Cinque Terre was named an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

How to Get to Cinque Terre

Situated on Italy’s western coast in Liguria, the Cinque Terre is roughly halfway between the cities of Genoa and Pisa. As far as the closest airports go, flying to either Pisa or Genoa are your best bets. Both airports cater to many domestic and international destinations, although Pisa has a much bigger airport.

This is because the Cinque Terre and the neighboring towns are simply too small to justify their own airport. Once in Italy, the best way to travel to Cinque Terre is by train. To reach the Cinque Terre by train, you first have to reach the town of Levanto along the coast to the north or the city of La Spezia to the east. These two places bookend the five villages of the Cinque Terre and are the last stops at either end of the Cinque Terre’s local train. With La Spezia being the only city in the area, it tends to act as a local hub of sorts.

Train travel is a popular way to get around Italy, and since you need seat reservations on the Le Frecce and Intercity trains, it’s best to book in advance. Leave it until too late, especially in the summer, and all the seats may be taken. The other way to go is with the slower regional trains which don’t have seat reservations.

How to Get Around the Cinque Terre

When planning a trip to Cinque Terre, you’ll need to decide how you’re going to get around. That’s because it will impact how long you need to see the region and where you choose to stay. The three main ways to get around the Cinque Terre are either by train, boat or hiking.

1. By Train

Running from La Spezia to Levanto and stopping at each of the five villages is a regular regional train that takes 30 minute end-to-end. The more interesting and enjoyable way to explore the Cinque Terre though is to take the scenic coastal trails that link up the five villages.

Working out the best train ticket will depend on how much you plan to take the train in the Cinque Terre. If you plan to go everywhere by train, then consider buying the 1 or 2-day Cinque Terre Card Treno at any station along the line for unlimited train travel. Otherwise, simply look at individual trip tickets, as they may be cheaper.

If you fancy seeing the Cinque Terre by boat, you’re in luck, as ferry services link up the villages with neighbouring Levanto and Portovenere. This is definitely a more expensive option than the train, but a cheaper option is to take one boat trip between villages. Ferry timetables, routes and costs can be found here .

As for seeing the Cinque Terre by car, it comes with some complications. Although it may be a fun and scenic drive for some, the roads throughout the national park are windy and quite technical. It also can be particularly bad for people who get car sick. Plus, the roads are often only wide enough for a single car, so you’ll need to drive with caution.

Once you’ve arrived in a village, only local cars may enter. Instead, you’ll need to park on the edge of the village. Each car park has its own hourly or daily rates, generally ranging from 15€ to 25€ per day. Alternatively, parking in La Spezia or Levanto is typically cheaper and you can take the train in from there.

Best Time to Visit the Cinque Terre

Working out the best time to visit Cinque Terre will depend on whether you want to hike, swim or just go sightseeing. If you’d like to spend time at the beach and go swimming, then summer is when the water is warmest.

The trouble is that the Cinque Terre is busiest in the summer months of July and August. What’s more, the Italian sun can be quite strong then, and hiking in that heat can be rough. Then there’s the matter that many things close down in August when Italians go on holidays.

For comfortable weather and good hiking conditions, it’s better to consider planning to visit Cinque Terre in the shoulder season months of April, May and September.

Where to Stay in Cinque Terre

If you’re planning your first trip to Cinque Terre, you may rightly be wondering what the best town to stay in Cinque Terre is. After all, with five villages to choose from and other towns nearby, working it all out can be a nightmare. Essentially though, you have one main decision to make: whether to stay in one of the Cinque Terre villages or in a nearby spot like Levanto , Portovenere and La Spezia .

Naturally, the first thought is going to be to stay in one of the five villages. When it comes to ambience and having everything at your doorstep, the villages are the best places to stay in Cinque Terre. But they’re also likely to be the first accommodations snapped up and potentially quite expensive come high season.

Towns like Levanto and Portovenere are in many ways very similar in look and feel to the villages of Cinque Terre. But since they’re not actually part of the Cinque Terre, you should find them less booked out and potentially a little cheaper.

Then there’s La Spezia, a fairly unassuming city, but a great place to go for affordable accommodation and easy access.

The Five Cinque Terre Towns: Where to Stay and Why

Wed 23 Mar 2022

The Five Cinque Terre Towns: Where to Stay and Why

Updated April 8th, 2024. The breathtaking scenery of the Italian Riviera along Liguria’s rugged coastline simply has to be seen to be believed. The jewels in this spectacular coastal crown are the five fishing villages known as the Cinque Terre, jaw-droppingly and gravity-defyingly situated on a 10-kilometer  stretch of sheer cliffs that tumble precipitously into the glittering waters of the Mediterranean. But where to stay in Cinque Terre? The five towns that make up the Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore , Manarola , Corniglia ,  Vernazza and Monterosso  - began life as medieval fortified settlements, each protected by a castle overlooking the sea guarding against Saracen raiders. These days, the pirate threat is long gone, and the Cinque Terre’s picturesque pastel-coloured villages have taken their well-deserved place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each of the five towns has its own vibe, so read on to get to grips and better understand where you should stay when visiting Cinque Terre.

Where to Stay in Riomaggiore

cinque terre riviera travel

The largest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore’s brightly-colored dwellings with their unmistakable green-shuttered windows are an indelible symbol of the Ligurian riviera. The easternmost village of the five, Riomaggiore, is frequently chosen as a home base by visitors to the region thanks to its accessible location and wealth of hotels. Make the climb up to the medieval castle that looms over the town, erected in the 13th century as a lookout and defense against pirate raids. The views from the ramparts over the twinkling sea far below are out of this world. Riomaggiore’s tiny, picture-perfect marina meanwhile encapsulates the Cinque Terre at its breathtaking and authentic best. The evocatively named Via dell’Amore is a breathtaking cliff-top trail that leads from Riomaggiore to nearby Manarola - check before you travel to see if the route has reopened, as this is one of the world’s most picturesque treks.

The Best Hotels in Riomaggiore

  • Sailors Rest : The garden! I shouldn't have to say anything else. Those views, that tranquility. Unforgettable! Rates/Photos/Reviews
  • La Giare : Modern, clean and crisp. Throw in sea views and a fantastic location, and you are well on your way to a winning formula. It is a great base from which to explore the region. Rates/Photos/Reviews

Where to Stay in Monterosso

Sunrise Apartments / Entire Apartment / Sleeps 4

Monterosso is immersed in a spectacular verdant landscape of vineyards, olive trees and lemon groves that scent the air for miles around. Thanks to its relatively larger size Monterosso offers an array of accommodation options, from seafront hotels to `casual guesthouses and farmstays in the surrounding countryside, so it makes a good base for exploring the region. The historic old town is a tangle of atmospheric narrow lanes that hide plenty of excellent restaurants, while in the more modern Fegina quarter (reached via an underground tunnel), a giant statue of Neptune overlooks the only stretch of sandy beach in the Cinque Terre.

Our Favorite Hotels in Monterosso

  • Sunrise Apartments : This beautiful and modern apartment is well equipped with all the modern amenities, but with that balcony, who cares what the interior looks like? With two bedrooms, it's a perfect spot for families. Rates/Photos/Reviews
  • Hotel al Terra di Mare : Strictly speaking, this 4-star Hotel is located about a 20-minute drive to Monterosso, but a frequent shuttle service into town makes it a great base. If you get too tired from hiking, be sure to make use of the magnificent pool and spa facilities. Rates/Photos/Reviews

Where to Stay in Vernazza

cinque terre riviera travel

Marconi Square Apartment/3 Bedrooms/Incredible Terrace

It’s not difficult to get your bearings in diminutive Vernazza, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy: a single main street charts a steep course downwards from the train station at the top of the town all the way to the water’s edge at Vernazza’s harbor. Cobbled Via Roma is lined with enticing cafes and bars, perfect for soaking up the Mediterranean sun and a spot of people-watching before you continue the descent to Piazza Marconi right on the coast. Here, the tiny port is ringed with picturesque pastel-colored houses that you won’t be able to resist photographing, with the looming presence of the medieval Belforte castle a reminder of the pirate threat that was once an ever-present feature of life here.

Our Favorite Hotels in Vernazza

  • Marconi Square Apartment : This 3-bedroom apartment with AC and a stunning terrace is perfect for families. The facilities are basic but clean, and the views from the terrace are truly jaw-dropping! Rates/Photos/Reviews
  • La Torretta de Merli : This one-bedroom apartment sleeps 4, as long as you are all close enough not to worry about privacy. But the main bedroom, looking out to the verdant slopes and azure sea, makes this a perfect spot for couples. Rates/Photos/Reviews

Where to Stay in Corniglia

cinque terre riviera travel

Madüneta 5 Terre/Guesthouse/Recent Renovation

Traditionally considered to be the most tranquil of the five villages, Corniglia is the middle town of the Cinque Terre and the only one that isn’t located directly on the seafront. Instead, the tiny borgo is spectacularly sited on a promontory more than 100 meters above the water. Reaching the village from the train station is something of an undertaking itself: a 382-step brick pathway called the Lardarina that snakes across the mountainside. But what splendid rewards await! Surrounded by fertile vineyards and terraced gardens, Corniglia was a prosperous agricultural center in antiquity, and its historic center is a maze of brightly-painted houses and narrow cobbled streets that seem immune to the passage of town. At the far side of town, a magnificent panoramic terrace (the Belvedere di Santa Maria) offers up heart-stopping views across the Mediterranean, and all 5 of the Cinque Terre are visible from here at once.

Our Favorite Hotels in Corniglia

  • Madüneta Guesthouse:  This sumptuously designed guesthouse pays homage to the wine of the region, with each room decorated to match the numerous local grape varieties. Luxuriously decorated, perfectly located, and all at a great price. Rates/Photos/Reviews
  • Luxury Penthouse : This newcomer to the region offers a breathtaking sea view from the terrace of the entire Gulf. The one-bedroom, one-bathroom Penthouse can accommodate up to four guests but is perfect for couples. Rates/Photos/Reviews

Where to Stay in Manarola

cinque terre riviera travel

La Lampara/Amazing Views/Sleeps 5

The sight of picturesque Manarola tumbling down a rocky cliff towards its little harbor far below is probably the most iconic view of the Cinque Terre. The route from the top of the town down to the waterfront will take you along steep carrugi , the characteristically narrow laneways typical of Ligurian towns and cities. An eclectic array of fishing boats are usually pulled up on the ramp leading into the water, a reminder that the sea’s bounty has been the lifeblood of the Cinque Terre for centuries. Beyond its romantic beauty, Manarola is renowned for the local Sciacchetrà wine, a sweet white with notes of candied citrus, dried fruit, and aromatic herbs on the nose. The town is surrounded by terraces thick with vines, and witnessing the annual harvest is a special experience.

Our Favorite Hotels in Manarola

  • La Lampara Sea Views: Located in a typical tower house, La Lampara dates back to the Xi Century, but the facilities are definitely not old-fashioned. More importantly, the view from the terrace is timeless! Rates/Photos/Reviews

24 Hours in Cinque Terre, Italy!

L ast summer, a year ago from today, I spent about 24 hours in the magical region of Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera! There are 5 (cinque) villages (terre) that make up this area – Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. These fishing villages are known for their stunning colorful houses that are stacked along the cliffside! My 24 hour Cinque Terre Itinerary consists of a sunset boat tour, local dinner, morning hike from Riomaggiore, and a pesto class with a gorgeous view of Manarola!

How to get there:

We landed in Genoa, Italy, and walked to the closest train station from the airport. It’s about a two hour train ride to Riomaggiore from the Genoa airport. I like to use the Trainline app to figure out train times and purchase tickets.

24 Hour Itinerary for Riomaggiore and Manarola:

While this may seem like a short trip, it is a perfect weekend trip to add on to your european vacation. We booked an airbnb in Riomaggiore, it seems like the most popular town of the 5. We got there in the afternoon, and did a sunset boat tour with Cinque Terre del Mare Boat Tours . The tour is 2 hours and you get to see all 5 villages from the water. The sunset was gorgeous and they had plenty of wine and focaccia on board to enjoy with the stunning views. There was even some time to jump in to the Mediterranean Sea for a quick swim! After words we got pizzas and wine at a local restaurant!

The next morning we hiked from Riomaggiore to Manarola. While the trains go from one village to the next, there are also walking paths that connect all 5 villages. The views from the trail were stunning.

In Manarola, we took the viral Pesto experience at Nessun Dorma . Be sure to arrive early to be seated with a view of the colorful coastline! This was the best pesto I’ve ever had in my life! The class ended with a large charcuterie board with fresh focaccia.

After the Pesto experience, we explored Manarola for a bit before taking the train back to Riomaggiore and then back to Genoa.

This itinerary is a suggested guideline to see the most of Cinque Terre in a short amount of time based off my experience.  For specific questions, please comment below and I will try to help. Happy travels!

Manarola in Italy—one of the five towns that make up Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is one of the most iconic, picture-postcard images of Italy, with its pastel-colored houses perched on the north-west coastline of Italy on the hills above the Mediterranean sea.

Knowing which part of Cinque Terre is the best place to stay depends on your preferences—here's a guide on when to go, what to take, where to stay and how to get about in Cinque Terre.

Why Is Cinque Terre So Special?

The five medieval villages of Cinque Terre have been UNESCO listed since 1997, inspired a Disney movie (Luca) and entice three million tourists to visit every year.

The wine made on the clifftops was legendary in the Renaissance period when it was sent to the tables of royalty and Popes—that's especially extraordinary considering the hillside in which it was, and still is, produced makes for backbreaking work.

It's even more incredible considering how remote it must have felt for centuries. The railway connecting Genoa and La Spezia was built in the 1870s, linking the five villages for the first time by train—before that, it was only accessible by sea. By 1960, one single-track road had arrived but it remains incredibly difficult to move about by car.

Above all, it is the views that are sublime. Everyone has a favorite village, but there's certainly something for every kind of nature lover, whether that's people watching on the beach or hiking vertiginous cliff faces.

300 Billion Perfect Storm Bitcoin Price Crash Under 60 000 Suddenly Accelerates As Ethereum XRP And Crypto Brace For Shock Fed Flip

The top 10 richest people in the world (may 2024), toyota s suv lineup is new and refreshed which one is right for you, what are the five villages in cinque terre and which is the most beautiful town in cinque terre.

Just as its name suggests, Cinque Terre is made up of five villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

Monterosso al Mare (red mountain) is the largest village in Cinque Terre with the most stores, hotels and guesthouses. It is divided into two parts, separated by a tunnel—the medieval part is to the east and to the west is Fegina, where you'll find the newest part of the village and the only sandy beach in Cinque Terre where you can rent beach chairs and parasols (the private beach clubs open in May and close for the year in September). Monterosso is the flattest of any of the Cinque Terre villages.

While it is often seen as the most overdeveloped village in Cinque Terre, Monterosso offers a great opportunity to taste authentic artisanal produce (think limoncello, olive oil, pesto) from local family-run businesses and has a large choice of seafood restaurants.

Vernazza is considered one of the most picturesque village (meaning sometimes, the busiest) with colorful Ligurian houses and fishing boats in the only natural harbor of all the Cinque Terre villages—it's here that you'll find all the pretty architectural features of the ancient Genoans, like winding staircases and atmospheric arches. The hike starts here to Monterosso in the north and Corniglia to the south—it's a stunning climb up to the Belforte Tower of Doria castle, built in the mid-1500s to protect the village from pirates.

Corniglia , the Cinque Terre village in the middle, is the only one not built directly on the seaside but 100 metres above sea level (you'll need to climb the 380-odd steps or take the shuttle bus from the station). It is the smallest and least accessible village, meaning that the larger tourist groups and buses tend to avoid it.

Manarola is one of the oldest villages and known for fishing and wine (think footpaths through the cliffside vineyards with yummy wines and delicious views). It might be one of the most instantly recognisable villages, known for its boat ramp into the sea and for watching the locals cliff jumping into the sea. Sit in one of the many Trattorias, eating fresh seafood—say, the muscoli ripieni— mussels stuffed with mortadella, parmesan and egg—overlooking the lush vineyards.

Riomaggiore has a pebble beach, a pretty harbor, some nightlife and a great sunset surrounding the patchwork of colorful houses stacked one upon another. It's the most eastern/southern village connected by narrow cobblestoned lanes and steps upon steps that lead up to the 13th century Castello di Riomaggiore, which has a great view.

How Long Does It Take To Walk The Five Villages Of Cinque Terre? Can I Take The Train? Is The Via dell'Amore Open?

The entire area is a national park with over 120 km (75 miles) of footpaths, connecting all five villages. Most trails are free of charge except, for instance, the trail than connects Monterosso and Vernazza and Corniglia, for which hikers need a Cinque Terre card. The Red Trail (Sentiero no.1) is free and runs along the ridge along all five Cinque Terre villages. The easiest part of the Blue Trail that connects Vernazza to Corniglia takes 1.5 hours, taking in the tiny hamlet of Prevo, although it is steep at the bottom.

The most famous walking trail is probably Via dell'Amore , or The Path of Love . It's flat, accessible and only takes 1km (half a mile) between Riomaggiore and Manarola but it has been closed since 2012 due to landslide damage— it's due to reopen fully in July 2024 for guided tours only. (Many trails were destroyed in the heavy flooding and landslides of 2011).

The easiest way to travel around the five villages of Cinque Terre is to take the express train that runs every 20 minutes (the schedule and prices can be found here ). There is also a hop-on, hop-off ferry service for about €30 per day but tickets cannot be bought in advance and must be bought from the ferry booths themselves.

While it is possible to visit Cinque Terre in one day, the villages are most atmospheric in the evenings when most of the day tourists have left, so you'll get the most out of a trip if you stay longer than two or three days.

The trails are often closed due to weather issues, so check the national park website for updates. To be most loved, stick to the paths and leave everything as you found it, taking litter with you.

How Can I travel To Cinque Terre?

Pisa Airport is close and from there, it's easy to take a train to Pisa Centrale Train Station and then to one of the Cinque Terre villages (usually changing trains at La Spezia).

Driving is complicated, the roads narrow and entrance to the villages banned (you would need to park in designated spaces outside). Only residents can drive inside.

Take the ferry from Levanto, La Spezia or Portovenere to Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore (it is only Corniglia, high on the cliffs that doesn’t have ferry access).

Can I Cycle The Villages Of Cinque Terre?

In a word, yes, you can cycle the villages of Cinque Terre but the difficulty of cycling the paths shouldn't be underestimated and anyone unused to long periods on a bike on hilly terrain could hire an electric bike near the Madonna of Montenero Sanctuary in Riomaggiore or in Manarola.

The Sentiero del Crinale, path number one, is a good bet for cyclists, as it's an old mule track, dating from Roman times. It's 40 kilometres long, rising from 800 metres to around 1.300 metres above sea level, starting in Levanto and finishing in Porto Venere in the south.

Is Cinque Terre Expensive?

Cinque Terre is very expensive by Italian standards as so many people come to visit one of the prettiest parts of Italy. Moreover, at weekends and on holidays, prices will easily double. The best value might be an affittacamere, a room without breakfast and while restaurant prices might be higher than you expected for a small village, there are lots of small bakeries that make delicious focaccia bread.

Levanto and La Spezia are at either ends of the trainline (and included on the Cinque Terre travel card) so it could be a good idea to stay in either of these places to find something cheaper, depending on availability. Porto Venere is another nearby village, an important commercial post in Roman times, often overlooked but worth a visit.

What Should I Bring To Visit Cinque Terre?

These are cliff sides that you will be exploring, prone to shifting over time and under weather—bring solid footwear and layered clothing that you can shed or add to match the weather, with waterproofs. Take lots of water (there are fountains to fill up free-of-charge in the villages) and there is little shade, so hats, sunscreen and sunglasses are a priority.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Cinque Terre?

Summers are increasingly hot across Europe, which is the fastest-warming continent due to climate change and thanks to remote working, there are less easily recognisable cheaper shoulder seasons, as in the past. April/May and September/October are good options for avoiding the crowds. Make sure to verify that you're not traveling on Italian public holidays or the villages will be unbearably crowded.

After the tour, you’re free to enjoy lunch in Pisa if you wish and then we’ll head to Lucca. This historic, walled city boasts some of Italy’s finest examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture amidst its cobbled streets and pretty piazzas. We’ll explore together on a walking tour and discover highlights including the Roman amphitheatre and beautiful cathedral, where the Volto Santo relic – a wooden sculpture of Christ – is said to be kept. Enjoy some free time to make your own discoveries in Lucca before we make our way back to the hotel.

Day 4 Cinque Terre

Today's included full-day excursion by coach and train takes you to the enchanting area known as the Cinque Terre. This translates as Five Lands and refers to the five fishing villages perched precariously on rugged cliffs high above the Mediterranean Sea. One of the world’s most photographed regions, the views here are simply stunning – so be sure to bring your camera!

As we explore with a Local Guide, we’ll see pretty, pastel-coloured houses clinging to steep dramatic cliffs, and fishing boats bobbing around in tiny harbours. We will admire ancient churches and cobbled piazzas and take in the spectacular views out to sea. Then, you’ll have free time in the village of Vernazza to do just as you please. Maybe soak up the sun on the little beach, linger over a glass of wine or dine alfresco by the waterfront, the choice is entirely yours.

Day 5 Marina di Pietrasanta - at Leisure

Enjoy some free time today. You could explore the area surrounding your hotel, spend a lazy day on the beach or relax by the swimming pool.

Alternatively, why not join our optional excursion, which begins in the beautiful village of Portovenere, sat atop a rocky peninsula in the 'Gulf of Poets', an area once very popular with writers such as Byron, Shelley and DH Lawrence. Highlights are a picturesque harbour lined with brightly coloured houses, the stunning church of San Pietro and an impressive stone-built castle. Next, you'll head to the beautiful seaside town of Lerici, home to an imposing castle, a small historic centre and a crescent-shaped piazza.

Day 6 Portofino & Santa Margherita

After breakfast, join us on today's included tour. We'll start by exploring the hidden hamlet of San Fruttuoso. Nested in a small bay, surrounded by a lush forest, there are no roads to this off-the-beaten-track destination. Instead, we’ll arrive by boat and then step inside the charming 10th-century abbey, located right beside the crystal-clear sea.

Next, we’ll venture to Portofino, which we’ll also reach by local boat service along a pretty coastal stretch. What used to be a tiny fishing port is today the Italian Riviera's most exclusive resort, offering designer boutiques and a fine selection of cafés and bars. You’ll have free time here to make your own discoveries and could perhaps take a stroll among the snaking streets to the Church of St Giorgio. From here, the views across the bay are quite spectacular. Another option is to explore the area surrounding the Piazzetta, Portofino’s main square overlooking the harbour.

You'll also visit the picturesque seaside resort of Santa Margherita, which is home to a lovely palm-fringed harbour that's a magnet for small yachts.

Day 7 Marina di Pietrasanta - at Leisure

Spend today at leisure exploring or enjoying the facilities at your hotel. You could take a dip in the swimming pool or perhaps book a relaxing treatment at the spa.

Alternatively, if you want to discover even more, why not join an optional excursion to Genoa. This large port city, with its twisting maze of narrow streets, is famous as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and its maritime history spans centuries. Your guided tour will take you past a diverse mix of contemporary, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, grand palaces and a host of museums and galleries. Now you have your bearings, the rest of the day is yours to do as you please in Genoa.

Day 8 Pisa - UK

Your holiday comes to an end today and after breakfast, we'll drive you to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

Learn about centuries-old wine-making techniques and enjoy a lunch of traditional dishes at the family-run Cantine Lunae Winery.

Also I asked this on the Florence forum awhile back but will put it out here to see if anyone has additional feedback. I will be traveling from Florence to Riomaggiore where we will be staying for a few days. If I am interpreting the Trenitalia tickets correctly we have the option of traveling on a regional train from Florence to La Spezia without needing to change trains or the high speed train with a change over in Pisa. The trip on the high speed train appears to be only about 15 minutes shorter than the regional. Other than the obvious advantage of not needing to change trains, are there other advantages or disadvantages of the high speed train versus regional train? We are a party of six traveling with smaller sized luggage or backpacks. We do not plan to tour Pisa if we opt for the high speed train. Is there a morning train that will be less packed with day trippers or should I expect they will all be crowded?

Just get the Regionale, and buy the tickets at the time. Remember to validate them before boarding the train.

The Riviera di Levante and the Cinque Terre

Liguria can be found in north-west Italy. It is a long, narrow coastal region running from the tuscan border all the way to France. Its setting is stunning, it lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountains (Maritime Alps and the Apennines). The whole region is like a huge green terrace with breathtaking sea view.

The Ligurian Riviera - also called Italian Riviera - is divided into 2 main parts by its capital city, Genova: the Riviera di Ponente - the coast of the setting sun - to the west, and the Riviera di Levante - the coast of the rising sun - to the east. The Riviera di Ponente is elegant, full of nice holiday resorts, sandy beaches and bigger towns. The Riviera di Levante is my kind of place. It is wilder, more rugged and rustic, full of promontories, hidden bays and colourful seaside villages: the Cinque Terre, Tellaro, Portovenere, Portofino, Camogli… just a few names to mention. This website is about the Riviera di Levante and above all the Cinque Terre, the most beautiful gem of this coastline.

Buy your groceries at the local market, hang your clothes on your private balcony, have breakfast in the bar down the street, imagine what it feels like to be a Cinque Terre resident.

There is a solution for every budget, from cheap rooms to luxury apartments and private villas. Many places have a terrace with breathtaking views of the Ligurian Sea, the green hills and the colourful houses. Please note that the accommodations listed on my page are only a sample of all the accommodations available in the Cinque Terre villages.

Boat rental

You haven't seen the Cinque Terre until you see it from the sea as well. The villages look stunning from the water. For the best experience, rent a private boat for your family or friends and spend an unforgettable day on the sea. Enjoy the amazing views and don't forget your bathing suit. I personally love swimming on tiny beaches that can only be reached by sea or diving into the crystal water straight from the boat. After a refreshing dip in the sea, just relax on board with a cold drink in your hand. And don't forget: this is the best way to beat the crowds! Renting a private boat from La Spezia is also a great solution for those arriving by cruise ship in La Spezia.

You can rent a boat with or without skipper. There are different kinds of boats available: sailboat, sail yacht, motorboat, gozzo boat, ligurian motorboat, motor yacht, luxury motor yacht, rubber boat, catamaran, fishing boat... You can rent a boat not only in the Cinque Terre area, but also from Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure and Rapallo.

To see the list of boats available in the Cinque Terre area, please visit my boat rental in Cinque Terre page, while the boats available in the Portofino area are listed on my boat rental in Portofino page.

Excursion boat

Book this big boat for up to 70 people to see Portovenere and the 5 villages from the sea.

I have been reading several articles about new travel trends, and it's all about active travel and authentic experiences. Instead of sitting on the beach all day, take some local tours in the Cinque Terre, La Spezia or some other areas of Liguria, and I am sure it will be the highlight of your trip. It's the best way to meet local people and it's nice to meet other travellers as well.

During a tour you can learn so much about the history of the area, local life and the people who live here. If you'd like to spend a day out on the sea, rent a boat, do a sailing trip or a kayak tour, or discover underwater life during the diving tour. If you'd like to spend time in the surrounding hills, take a guided hike or an ebike tour. For the most adventurous, there is paragliding, rock climbing and wild water river trekking.

Don't forget about the gastronomy of the Cinque Terre. Choose a cooking class or a pesto course, learn to make pizza and focaccia, join a wine tour or an olive oil tasting. Below you can see some of the most popular tours last year. To see the list of all tours available, please visit my Tours page .

Choose the morning tour or the sunset cruise, and enjoy some drinks or even great food on board.

Over the past decade I've been receiving thousands of emails from all over the world. I feel grateful and honoured that so many people trust me and ask me to organise their holiday in the Cinque Terre and some other parts of Italy. I've been booking hundreds of apartments, rooms, boats and different tours for these people. Then once in a while I get an email from a traveller with a special request: he wants to propose his girlfriend on a sailboat, they want to get married with seaview, they'd like to have their luggage transferred while hiking or a company is planning an incentive tour or team building in the Cinque Terre. Well, I have done all of these now, and that's why I have created this section. You can write me with the craziest ideas, and I'll do my best to help you.

Have a special wedding with seaview in a picture perfect village of the Italian Riviera.

Anniversary, birthday, marriage proposal

Let me help you organise a surprise birthday or a marriage proposal in this stunning location.

Travel in a comfortable way, rent a private transfer or get a luggage transfer while you are hiking.

The Cinque Terre is the ideal destination for an incentive tour or team building, with so many activities to choose from.

Tuscany

Book accommodation

The Cinque Terre is only a few kilometers away from the Tuscan border, so many travellers visit Tuscany before or after the Cinque Terre. As I have travelled around Tuscany many times and know it very well, I can help you plan your itinerary and book a room, apartment or entire farmhouse (agriturismo) for you.

Tuscany is one of Italy's most beautiful regions, with a great variety of landscapes and uncountable treasures. Rolling hills with cypresses, vineyards, silver olive groves, poppy fields, sunflowers, medieval villages, stone farmhouses, sandy beaches, small islands, rocky mountain peaks, skihills, world famous Renaissance pieces of art, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Giotto, simple dishes of the countryside, delicious red wine, golden olive oil… Tuscany is all of this, and so much more.

Riviera di Ponente

For about ten years, I've been travelling around the Riviera di Levante and the Cinque Terre. I have discovered basically every village and town along the coast, all the way from Tuscany to Genova. I was always wondering, what's on the other side of Genova, in the western part of Liguria. So I have started to visit this area as well, the Riviera di Ponente, which starts around Genova and goes all the way to the French border.

As I am really passionate about the Riviera di Levante, I was curious to see the other side. Am I going to like it? Or is it going to disappoint me? Well, I have to admit that it is much nicer than I expected. It is true that the coast is more built up so it is not so wildly beautiful, there are many bigger towns, some of them without much character, but there are many hidden gems around.

Read more about the Riviera di Ponente

Procida

If you love the Cinque Terre, you will also love the Island of Procida. Procida is still a well-kept secret, most people outside of Italy have no idea where it is. Unlike its sister islands in the Bay of Naples, glamorous Capri and green Ischia, Procida is still under the radar of most travellers.

With its colourful houses painted with pastel hues of yellow, pink, white, blue and green, tiny fishing boats, lush vegetation and the sea all around, this tiny island looks like a painting. Procida has a very unique atmosphere, a truly south italian vibe: feels like downtown Naples was dropped on a piece of paradise in the Tyrrhenian sea. So full of life!

Read more about Procida on my italy-slowtravel.com website and send me an e-mail if you would like to book an apartment, tour or boat in Procida.

This evening let’s get together with our fellow travelers for dinner at our hotel.

Daytrip to Genoa

cinque terre riviera travel

Today let’s discover the famous city of Genoa as we travel up the Ligurian coast. Genoa was previously only known for the city's industrial port and boat fair, which is held once a year. Today Genoa is much more than that after a period of redevelopment. Let’s discover the city's harbour promenade with Europe's largest aquarium, its ancient centre with historic palaces in various architectural styles such as Palazzo Ducale, Teatro Carlo Felice and Christopher Columbus’ home. Don’t miss too exploring Genoa’s small characteristic alleys and see why this city is one of Italy’s undiscovered gems.

cinque terre riviera travel

Today you have a full day at leisure, enjoying the comfort of your hotel or exploring the charming town of Sestri Levante with its beautiful rocky seascape landscape. Sestri Levante is located on a rocky peninsula that forms two bays; one is called La Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence) and the other Baia delle Favole (Bay of Adventure). You can discover more within the city with the Rizzi gallery, the Gualino castle, its beautiful churches and many shops during your free time.

Cinque Terre by train

Excursion in train to cinque terre.

cinque terre riviera travel

Let’s explore more of the beautiful and famous Cinque Terre National Park by train, discovering one of the most untouched natural areas around the Mediterranean, Liguria, and the Tyrrhenian coast. We will travel through the small fishing villages that make up the picturesque scenery of one of Italy’s highlights, with a stop in two of them:  Vernazza and Manarola. Each village is enjoyable to explore and has its own character. Vernazza has a small beach and is famous for its ancient clock towers and labyrinthine streets. In Manarola we can explore its shoreline caves and taste locally caught anchovies, a speciality here. Traveling by train between these villages is an ideal way to discover more of what Cinque Terre has to offer.

cinque terre riviera travel

Today is yours. You can enjoy more by soaking up the sun beside the swimming pool with a fresh drink. Or you can take a leisurely stroll to the nearby Baia del Silenzio, a captivating crescent-shaped beach renowned for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere.

Cinque Terre by boat

Sailing trip along the cinque terre coast to portovenere.

cinque terre riviera travel

Today let’s see more of this Italian slice of heaven. As we embark on our boat trip, we have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful towns from the coast, stopping in Monterosso before we arrive in Portovenere. A small, characteristic port town, located on the tip of a peninsula, Portovenere’s narrow Ligurian houses, with their traditional, pastel colours adorn the cityscape together with the church of San Pietro at the end of the strait. Returning home, we pass the Palmaria, another chance to admire Cinque Terre’s picturesque scenery, Islands before returning to Sestri Levante.

Note: in case of bad weather or low season (April and October), that excursion may need to be done by train and short ferry ride (train from Sestri Levante to La Spezia and boat trip from there to Portovenere).

At leisure or Optional Excursion to Rapallo

Today is another day free to relax and take in some further sightseeing. Our expert local guide will be happy to suggest activities and advise on must-see highlights.

Optional Riviera Excursion to Rapallo

Enjoy a trip along the coast to the beautiful Portofino peninsula, with a stop in Rapallo. Admire the dramatic cliffs and small beaches meeting the Mediterranean, where fishing boats and large pleasure yachts are side by side. On a cliff top, the city's old castle rises above the viewer, who can shudder at the thought of the pirates and corsairs of the past who often invaded the city. You can enjoy it all along the town's elegant lake promenade, where there is also plenty of opportunity to drop into one of the cosy cafes for a drink or a freshly brewed cup of espresso. Please note: This excursion is subject to minimum numbers.

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.
