I’m A Beauty Editor, And This Is My Trick To Maintaining A Golden Glow While Travelling

No mess or mitts required.

Travelling during summer – especially after the last few years we’ve all had – is an irrefutable blessing. Being able to explore the world again after spending so long stuck in our home states is an incredible privilege, but I’ve also come to the stark realisation that I’m no longer match-fit when it comes to travel.

While I’ve been back and forth to different states, international travel – especially over summer in the Northern hemisphere – presented a new challenge that I wasn’t entirely prepared for. How could I pack light to avoid unwanted over-baggage charges, while still maintaining my beauty routine ?

I got the skincare situation sorted (travel sizes of all my favourites were available, thankfully!) but when it came to tanning, I was pretty stumped. I didn’t want to take my whole fake tan kit with me – mostly for fear of my tanning mousse exploding in my luggage and staining all my clothes, but also because I wholeheartedly believe holiday travel should be simple – so I was thrilled to find a compact, zero-effort solution.

Say hello to the new Glow Recipe x Isle of Paradise Glow In Paradise Kit, a limited edition collaboration between two iconic beauty brands.

The special pairing brings together Glow Recipe’s ultra lightweight Watermelon Glow PinkJuice Moisturizer with Isle of Paradise’s Self-Tanning Drops . All you have to do is add a few drops of Isle of Paradise’s tanning drops to the Glow Recipe moisturiser, mix it together and apply it to your skin, and you’ve got a quick and easy way to tan while travelling, without having to needing all your fake tan accoutrements in tow.

@beautyeditor How to fake tan while travelling – the lazy girl’s guide! I’m always over baggage so these are a lifesaver 🤌🏼 #beautyeditor #faketantips #faketanroutine #faketan #isleofparadise ♬ Falling Back – Drake

The moisturiser leaves a cooling effect on the skin meaning it’s perfect for soaring temps, while the drops negate the need for a dedicated tanning mousse or lotion. It’s also easy to top-up, as you can add a 2-3 drops to the moisturiser for a consistent daily glow, or add a few more every few days, depending on your desired level of glow.

I blend and apply with my hands to avoid travelling with a mitt, but always make sure that you wash them immediately after to avoid stains.

This £20 ‘satin sleeping bag’ that protects your bed sheets from fake tan is going viral on TikTok

By Anya Meyerowitz

Image may contain Face Human Person and Hair

With great fake tan comes great responsibilities: the responsibility to keep washing our stained, biscuit-smelling bed sheets day-in and day-out for the rest of our lives.

Plus, the slightest crinkle in our bedsheet or the reapplication of tan from our sheet back onto somewhere else on our body, and you wake up with all sorts of patches and streaks.

It's all worth it though for glowing, sun-kissed skin, right? In theory, yes, but that doesn't mean that we wouldn't jump at a better way of doing things.

Oh, what's that you say, there's a better way of doing things?

As with everything good in our life, we saw it first on TikTok , which is exactly the case when it comes to this £20 item that can protect your bed sheets.

The product in question is the Self Tan Bed Sheet Protector from Next, which is specifically designed to protect your linen from fake tan transfer.

Reduced bloating, increased immunity, post-sport recovery and improved skin and gut health.

By Georgia Trodd

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Basically camping for self-tanners (and also those who don't ever intend on going camping outside of their own bedroom, ever again), the sheet is essentially a sleeping bag, designed to sit between your mattress and your duvet, forming a handy little pocket that you can slide into.

It also comes with a fold-over section that covers the edge of your duvet. This means even if you sleep with your arm out, the sheet will get stained – rather than your bedding.

Self Tan Bed Sheet Protector, £20, Next

This must-have product was first brought to our attention by TikTok user @cxmakeupstudio, whose video on the bedding has hit over 500,000 views.

“Omg guys, this is a game changer,” that odd robotic TikTok voice over says. "It protects your sheets from fake tan .

“It's like a little satin sleeping bag and all you have to do is hook it over your pillow, you can put two pillows side by side if you need to”

TikTok content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

She goes on to say: “No more smelly sheets. It stops staining and there’s enough space to move inside. They do it in different colours, too”

Unsurprisingly, the comments are flooded with fake-tan fans tagging their equally-as-obsessed friends in disbelief at this simple solution to their problem.

“How have we not got this,” writes one, while another comments: “I need this.”

We also noticed several boyfriends in the comments section, tagging their girlfriends in and suggesting, with varying levels of kindness, that she buy one of these.

It's totally foolproof.

By Lottie Winter

The Next website explains: “Also perfect for your travels, whether you're tanning or just for hygiene reasons! Simply hook the top of the product onto your pillows, slip the rest inside of your bed and enjoy a comfortable night's sleep. Includes a handy drawstring bag for storage.”

The sheet protector is usually available in four colour ways, but is currently sold out in black, leaving you with the choice of pink, grey or navy.

As any avid fake tanner knows, besides from the telltale orange hands, questionable elbows, streaky legs or missed pale patches, stained bedsheets are part and parcel of a fake-it-till-you-make-it glow. But is there a way to prevent this orange silhouette that’s left behind when you wake? Well, yes.

When market leader Bondi Sands launched its fake tan protector sheet (£29.99, Bondisands.co.uk) , we were instantly sold on the idea of a transfer-free dividing layer between you and your sheets.

Effectively designed to be a silky pouch that you can slip into to prevent your tan rubbing off, the sheet not only let our tan develop more nicely but also saved our crisp clean bedsheets from orange stains.

But in recent months, a new affordable rival has arrived on the scene and quickly took TikTok by storm. Garnering rave reviews on the platform, Next’s £20 tan sheet protector soon sold out – but now, it’s finally back in stock.

Coming in four colourways – black, grey, navy and pink – the high street favourite claim to have designed a pouch that allows you to sleep comfortably in your tan, minus the mess. You simply hook the top of the product onto your pillows, slip yourself inside and place your duvet over the top. Costing £10 less than its market competitor, as part of our TikTok trials series, we naturally had to put it to the test.

How we tested

Slotting it into our weekly tanning routine, we considered how comfortable it was to sleep in and above all, how well it protected our sheets (and our tan developing, of course). Here’s our honest review.

Next self tan sheet protector

next sheet .jpg

Buy now £20, Next.co.uk

Next’s sheet protector is essentially a silky, slimmed down sleeping bag made from polyester. After unfolding the sheet and laying it down on our mattress , we were pleased to discover it was a lot wider than other more claustrophobic protector sheets we’ve tried.

The design features a handy slot for your pillow that prevents transfer from your face and neck, while there’s also additional fabric to fold over your duvet if you sleep with your arms out. After applying our tan, we slipped into the bag (no duvet was necessary in the midst of a heatwave) and secured ourselves in with one popper on each side.

Being a relatively fussy sleeper, we found the sheet protector surprisingly comfortable and cocooning. The roomy design meant there was plenty of room for any tossing and turning during the night while the polyester, silk-effect fabrication felt cool on our skin (a blessing during said heatwave ).

But the true test is the results in the morning. Peeling away the sheet, we found no traces of tan and best of all, after showering to wash away any residue we found that our tan had developed much more deeply than it would sans the protector.

The sheet is only really necessary after a first application of tan to avoid initial residue transferring onto your sheets, but if you’re very protective of your sheets, there’s no reason why you can’t use the sleeping bag throughout the week as your tan slowly fades.

Next’s sheet also comes with a drawstring bag for storage between uses – plus, it’s machine washable making it easy to keep clean after every use.

As someone who tans every week and has invested in nice white sheets, Next’s sheet protector is a more than welcome addition to our tanning arsenal. Comfortable and cosy, we felt no difference in our ability to sleep – while there was also the added benefits of its cooling silk-effect design.

Beyond its ability to keep our sheets transfer-free, the bag also helped our tan develop into a deeper and more bronzed colour. Costing just £20, we’re a very happy convert to Next’s tan sheet protector.

How to Fake Tan Properly (Like You’ve Been on Vacation)

Fake it until you make it.

fake tan travel bag

It’s time to take a trip to St. Tropez, Bali and Copacabana courtesy of a bottle of self-tan. Yes, friends, we’re going from quarantining to quaratanning .

If you want to look tall, dark, and tansom e for your next Zoom call and feel like you’ve come back from the equator even though you just got back from the kitchen, you need to know how to fake tan properly. You can thank our Social Media and PR managers for these cheeky puns!

arty picture of a woman's bikini clasp close up

Once upon a time – unless you really knew what you were doing (and who does) – self-tanning lotions led to orange streaky disasters. These days, they’ve come a long way, allow you to build a tan gradually and – packed with nutrients – are a fool-proof way to make your skin glow naturally at home.

So, check out our guide on how to fake tan properly along with some of the best products out there. All of them appropriately named after the dreamiest vacation spots in the world.

  • St. Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse
  • Australian Glow Everyday Gradual Tanning Lotion With Hemp
  • Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Self-Tanning Mousse
  • Bali Body Self-Tanning Mousse

Fake tan tips and tricks

Along with life-enriching experiences, that post-holiday glow on our faces has to be one of the best side effects of taking a trip to some far-flung corner of the world. Even if you’ve been diligently applying mud masks and sheet masks and popping vitamin D to keep your skin looking fly, a little bottled-tan to help make your skin glow naturally at home might give you a little boost.

Before you go to town on that bottle of St. Tropez, read these fake tan tips and tricks.

  • Go for a subtle glow: You want it to look natural as opposed to a deep dark tan, one to two applications will do the trick.
  • Focus on the face, neck, upper torso and arms: If you’re going to do one application for a subtle healthy glow, stick to the face, neck, chest and arms. This is much easier to maintain than doing the whole body.
  • Prep your skin: Remember to exfoliate before applying self-tan. Use an exfoliating mitt to prep your skin, and this will help it to go on more evenly and help your self-tan to stick around longer. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate post-self-tan as well. It might seem counter-intuitive but gently exfoliating a couple of times a week will help to maintain an even tan.
  • Moisturising: Keeping your skin hydrated with a moisturiser will also help your self-tan last longer and keep your skin looking glowy.

Learn how to fake tan properly at home with these top-selling products

These are some of the best self-tanning products out there that will help you to get a lovely natural glow at home. Thanks to these top-notch formulations, you’ll end up looking like you just came back from vacation and not like a Cheeto. If you’re a beginner, opt for a self-tanning mousse as their lightweight formulas make them easier to apply, and this reduces the chance of streaking.

1. St. Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse

This self-tanning game-changer guarantees a glow in one minute and couldn’t be easier to use. No more sitting around for hours and waiting for the tan to develop. Just apply the lightweight foam and watch as it magically transforms into a gel on your skin and then wash it off 60 seconds later and you’re good to go.

2. Australian Glow Everyday Gradual Tanning Lotion With Hemp

Australia is going to be one of the first countries to open up post-pandemic, so there’s a chance we might be getting our vacation-glow on there for real. Until we can, for beautifully moisturised skin along with a mid-summer hint of colour, the Australian Glow Everyday Gradual Tanning Lotion With Hemp is an eco-friendly option that you will fall in love with.

Made from natural and organic ingredients, this time-efficient and hassle-free gradual tanning lotion will give you just the right hint of bronze. Australian Glow’s packaging is also made with recycled ocean waste plastic. What’s not to love about a self-tanning product that’s good for the environment and you?

3. Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Self-Tanning Mousse

This self-tanner might just whisk you off to blissful island life in 4-6 hours. We imagine ourselves playing “Wicked Games” while applying it.

Vegan and cruelty-free, Isle of Paradise’s colour correcting actives work to give you the best at-home tan. Fair-to-medium skin tones can use the light shade for a warm and peachy look, while the medium option is perfect darker olive skin tones, and takes care of any redness with an understated green tint (science is pretty amazing). Their dark shade has a “HyperViolet Complex” that neutralises any orange or sallow undertones.

The clear water to foam formula will hydrate your skin while adding a glow leaving no streaks, no smells or orange tones.

4. Bali Body Self-Tanning Mousse

If you really want to boost your mood while in lockdown look to Bali Body’s self-tanning range . We’re highlighting their easy to apply mousse for its hydrating-foamy formula which will give you a rich golden tan that looks healthy and natural. Our pro tip? Sip on some beachy cocktails while you wait for the tan to develop, and pull out all your vacation attire, because that’s all you’re going to want to wear with your new glow.

5. Sol de Janeiro’s Glowmotions Glow Oil in Copacabana Bronze

For a quick and easy moisturising glow that requires no prep, choose Sol de Janeiro’s Glowmotions Glow Oil . We’ve picked Copacabana bronze because it’s named after one of Rio de Janeiro’s liveliest neighbourhoods. If you don’t want to go down the self-tanning route, opt for this wash-off body shimmer which is loaded with cupuaçu butter, açai, and coconut oils.

10 of the best fake tan products to make you glow for your summer holiday

By Catherine Robinson

10 of the best fake tan products to make you glow for your summer holiday

I can feel summer coming. My fingers are itching to book a flight somewhere hot and the unopened sun lotions from last year are calling to me from the top shelf. Most of all, I’m desperate for a tan because external change also means an internal shift. Freckles and a golden glow trigger memories of carefree sunny days and instantly put me in a good mood. But when the British weather turns, and it’s freezing when it’s supposed to be spring , my only option to hold onto my happy state is to fake it.

I start slow – a few drops added to moisturiser to calm my fake-tan anxieties (will it give me spots, smell of burnt tyres, turn me a dirty shade of orange?) and gain confidence (when I remember that formulas have changed since the 1980s), rejoicing in the instant boost it gives to my appearance and mind.

My tips: Always exfoliate before application. Dry patches are a magnet for pigment to cling to, so moisturise elbows, ankles and knees with an unscented, oil-free moisturiser. When it comes to applying the tanning product, have a light hand and move quickly. If you can invest in an applicator mitt to softly blend (all chemists sell them), all the better, and have a biodegradable wipe nearby to clean palms of hands and feet and in between fingers and toes. For the face, I like to buff the tan with a large, clean make-up brush – it ensures there are no streaks or harsh lines.

Self Tan Travel Hacks

Overseas holidays are back in full swing, but understandably some of us are a little rusty regarding travel preparedness. Lucky for you we’re here to refresh our Babes on how to make sure you're glowing all vay-cay long!

Guide For Glowing Skin on Your Holiday.

Should i take self tan on my holiday.

Whatever the climate, a bronzed body will shine through whether you're hitting the beach or the ski slopes. Keep reading our tips below for which Self Tan you should take.

Can I Pack Self Tan in My Carry-on Luggage?

If you’re flying by aeroplane remember to check the liquid requirements for carry-on luggage, lest your Bondi Sands be confiscated! It will be safe in your checked bags though.

What Have I Forgotten to Pack?

While a glow is always in, sun damage is not. Remember that your Bondi Sands Self Tan won’t protect you from the sun's rays (no matter how bronzed your skin looks). SPF is always your BFF, especially if you escape the cold to sunnier climates. However, remember that UV can be harmful in cooler temperatures, even if your destination is Antarctica, make sure you’re packing sunscreen .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bondi Sands (@bondisands)

What Accessories Should I Take?

If you're travelling for more than a few days, you may need to apply a fresh tan, and that means, prepping the skin and removing any old tan, so don’t forget to take you’re Exfoliation & Application Mitts , these are super lightweight so can easily be packed in your luggage. We also have a travel sized Tan Eraser Foam .

Will My Self Tan Leak in My Luggage?

This is unlikely, but some checked baggage can go on quite the adventure, so for peace of mind, before packing your Self Tan, double-check the lid is on tight (especially if you’ve opened the tan already), and even wrap it in a zip-lock or a shopping bag and then place it in your toiletries bag. If you are worried about leakage, you could try taking one of our Gradual or Self Tan Lotions , with a thicker formula and less chance for spills.

Which Tan Is Best for My Holiday?

Though you might have the ride-or-die favourite tan that you feel the most comfortable with no matter the occasion, keep reading below for our handy tips for glowing skin for every type of trip.

Best Tan for A Long Weekend?

For a short trip, you might try tanning before you leave, then take a gradual tan to extend or deepen your glow. Check out our new range of gradual tanning lotions for body with added benefits and our new Gradual Face Tan .

Best Tan for Short Notice?

If it's a last-minute trip and you are short on time, you can try a layer of 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam , which will give you a glow in just one hour (you can pack your suitcase while you marinate!).

Best Tan for a Beach Holiday?

For a golden beachy glow, check out our Liquid Gold Range , paired perfectly with a day at the beach.

Best Tan for an Active Holiday?

For lots of hiking, swimming or skiing, you might want to go with a gradual tanning lotion you can top up any areas that fade away with high levels of activity. Our gradual tan will build up that glow over time and be well maintained.

Best Tan for A Big Event?

If you’ve got a big event on your holiday (like an anniversary dinner or wedding) you should take our GLO Matte One Day Tan with you. Perfect on its own or over an existing tan, this wash-off formula will provide an instant tan with a bronzed glow and can easily be washed off. Perfect for those worried about their tanning routine while on the move.

Best Tan for Those With Limited Space In Their Bag?

If you’re looking to save on space in your bag, our Starter Bundle contains our travel-sized Self Tan, including 100ML of our original Dark Foam, Gradual Tanning Lotion & Tan Eraser Foam, complete with a mitt . Small but mighty, it's got everything you need to get a gorgeous glow on your travels.

We’re sure to have inspired a gorgeous holiday glow with our Self Tan travel hacks, happy tanning and bon voyage Lovers!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

fake tan travel bag

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

fake tan travel bag

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

fake tan travel bag

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

fake tan travel bag

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

fake tan travel bag

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

fake tan travel bag

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

fake tan travel bag

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
