The original ELO released a dozen albums through 2001’s Zoom — plus the 1980 soundtrack to Xanadu featuring Olivia Newton-John — as well as two credited to Jeff Lynne’s ELO, 2015’s Alone in the Universe and 2019s’s From Out of Nowhere . The latter album’s 2019 outing was the last time Lynne, 76, was on the road.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO is set to embark on the band’s final tour dubbed “The Over and Out Tour”. The 27-date trek, produced by Live Nation, will kick off in Palm Desert, CA on August 24 and travel across North America to cities such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Seattle before concluding in Los Angeles, CA on October 25.

Jeff Lynne's ELO announce final tour: How to get tickets to Over and Out

Jeff Lynne’s ELO dazzled audiences with a show of sonic perfection when the band reappeared in the U.S. in 2018-2019.

Now, the melodic wizard and his ace musical comrades will hit the road a final time for The Over and Out Tour. A 27-date outing will commence Aug. 24 in Palm Desert, California and wrap Oct. 25 in Los Angeles. In between, Lynne and ELO will visit cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Houston and Washington, D.C.

An ELO presale begins at 10 a.m. local time March 20, with the general sale starting at 10 a.m. local time March 22. VIP experiences will also go on sale at 10 a.m. local time March 20. Tickets will be available via livenation.com and details about the VIP packages at jefflynneselo.com.

During the band’s last U.S. run , Lynne offered a 20-song setlist that included Electric Light Orchestra gems “Evil Woman,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Telephone Line” and “Do Ya,” all reproduced with stunning clarity. Even the underappreciated and much-maligned “Xanadu” from the 1980 Olivia Newton-John movie received its due.

In addition to his prowess as a producer, Lynne was also a co-founder and member of The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The collective also received a nod in the live production with a comforting rendition of “Handle with Care.”

Lynne was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023 and ELO ushered into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Jeff Lynne ’s Electric Light Orchestra have announced 27 North American dates for what will be their final tour. The Over and Out Tour will kick off in Palm Desert, California, on August 24, and run through to October 25 when ELO will drop the curtain at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California. ELO have sold over 50 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017.

"The Over and Out Tour" kicks off in August

Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra will embark on a final tour of North America this summer and fall ( get tickets here ).

Dubbed “The Over and Out Tour,” the 27-date outing kicks off in Palm Desert, CA on August 19th. Shows are scheduled in Seattle, Vancouver, San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix, before the tour concludes in Los Angeles on October 25th. Update: Due to demand, ELO has added additional shows in NYC (9/17), Philadelphia (9/21), Chicago (9/28), and Los Angeles (10/26).

Electric Light Orchestra was formed by Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan in 1970, with Richard Tandy joining a year later. The group’s initial run came to an end in 1983, with a pair of short-term reunions following in 1984 and 2000. However, in 2014, Lynne resurrected ELO with Tandy in tow, and has since released two studio albums and embarked on several lengthy tours.

ELO has sold over 50 million albums to date and earned seven top 10 hits in North America, including “”Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” “”Don’t Bring Me Down,” and “Xanadu.” In 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra will play a string of dates in the US as part of The Over And Out Tour.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra have announced farewell tour dates for 2024.

After first forming in 1970, the Mr. Blue Sky rockers will embark on The Over And Out Tour , kicking off shows in August this year.

Their US shows, will commence in Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, California on 24th August and culminate in a show at the Los Angeles Kia Forum on 25th October 2024.

UK dates have not yet been announced.

Pre-sales start on Wednesday 20th March from 10am PDT, while a Live Nation presale will launch on 21st March 8am PDT.

UK farewell dates are yet to be announced, but since the band haven't embarked on a UK tour since 2018 and their 2020 dates had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, it's fair to say we should watch this space.

Jeff Lynne Adds Dates to ‘The Over and Out’ 2024 Tour

Jeff Lynne has announced second shows in four cities for “The Over and Out” 2024 North American tour. The April 2 news brings the run to 31 dates (so far) and is his first tour in five years. The original March 19 tour announcement, billed as the final tour, followed a pair of teaser posts in the past few days on his various social media accounts. (Those were preceded by a Facebook post on Christmas Eve that noted, “I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.”) See the updated itinerary below. Lynne, who turned 76 last Dec. 30, made his first stage performance in four years when he played a 10-song set at Joe Walsh’s VetsAid benefit concert on November 12, 2023.

Lynne’s most recent studio album was From Out of Nowhere , released in November 2019 and the first from Jeff Lynne’s ELO since 2015. Order it in the U.S. here and in the U.K. here . It followed 2015’s Alone in the Universe , which initiated a burst of activity from the maestro. Lynne resumed touring with a new edition of the Electric Light Orchestra, now dubbed Jeff Lynne’s ELO. The band did a 2019 summer tour in the U.S. and had booked a 2020 U.K. tour which was canceled due to the pandemic.

Electric Light Orchestra is a symphonic rock band from Birmingham, UK who had huge success in the 1970s & 80s and have sold over 50 million record worldwide.

In the late 60's, the guitarist and vocalist of The Move Roy Wood had the idea to form a new band that would use violins, cellos, string basses, horns and woodwinds to give their music a classical sound. This may seem like a given nowadays with every contemporary rock band using a variety of instruments to create their sound, yet at the beginning of the 1970s, The Electric Light Orchestra were considered revolutionaries of the genre. They have more combined US & UK top 40 chart hits than any other band in the world.

They enjoyed moderate successes with their first few releases in the early 70's, yet it was their fourth album 'Eldorado' which managed to crack the top 20 of the US Billboard chart and incorporated a live string section and orchestra, it also included their first US top ten hit 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. They continued to have mammoth successes stateside when releasing their album 'Face The Music', the band played 68 shows in 76 days yet they were still snubbed in their native UK until their next release, the platinum selling 'A New World Record' and featured the hit singles 'Do Ya' and 'Livin' Thing'.

The band's touring and recording momentum seemed to show no sign of slowing as their next release 'Out Of The Blue' went double platinum and featured another string of singles that charted on both sides of the Atlantic including their now cult classic 'Mr. Blue Sky'. They later collaborated with vocalist Olivia Newton-John on the soundtrack for musical film 'Xanadu' where the title track became a huge hit all over the world. The band eventually disbanded in 1988 after a string of disappointing single releases after they replaced actual strings with synthesisers, they reformed in 2000 but the following album 'Zoom' also failed commercially. Their 2014 reformation was a larger success when performing a benefit gig for Children In Need with Jeff Lynne hinting at a 2015 UK tour.

A must go see tour!! Jeff Lynne looked and sounded amazing!! The artists and musicians he has with him are killing these shows on this tour. They are phenomenal artists keeping a timing that was solid and on point turning left right diagonally and every with way else no turn signal needed on this time travel through space and time. Taking the audience throughan amazing plethora of twenty songs in what only seemed like all of them were played in just five minutes went by when the show was over. " where does the time go"g/d.crushed song after song pounding through each song belting physical and visual stimulations for everyone to absorb and digest to your delight. For Dawes,I can't say I just heard them through the tunnels at the Allstate arena. What sounds I heard wasn't bad and I'm sure they are a great band im sure this tour will open some doors of opportunity for them in the future. As for the arena my first time there and coming from the St Louis area with similar sized venues. Allstate arena was a nice venue to attend a show. Associates helpful and friendly. Security inside and out did a great job of hearding us all in and out safely definitely want to thank them as well. The sound there was killer. I believe it may have been the third song with the cellos had a bit of reverb on the super low parts but the sound crew corrected that quickly for a mind blowing sound. To go as a side dish to the sounds pelting off the stage. The production company working with Jeff Lynne brought a laser backdrop out of this world. It was a third eye cleansing production of lasers lights and backdrop that's left a contrail partner of ELOs voyage through space and time. Finally i want to mention the audience attending. Another good sign of an amazing artist is the way they can get as many different individuals from thoughts lives and ideologies together bringing their audienced to respect love and watch out for one another is a true art. Gives light that we can get along in a time where look down and disengage is the new in. So if youre not sure if youre wanting to go you. Take your closest loved one or go with your crew this tour can't be missed. You Want Be Lucky To See Him Do This Again Light Years Later. Get on this voyage now experience what Jeff Lynne has done for himself and fans from all over the world and beyond whole career. Long live Rock!!

Musically, it was a great gig and one I had waited decades to see. Jeff and the band were tight and on form and played everything you could possibly have asked for (2/3rds were top 20 hits). There was little interaction with the audience though.

HOWEVER, and it is a big however, the O2 stinks as a venue. I have long hated, but had no choice but to go if I wanted to see Jeff Lynne.

Other than for Roll Over Beethoven, the sound was mixed really quietly, so that you spent most of the time listening to the people around you talking. The lighting was atrocious - most of the stage was very dimly lit and yet the seats were almost floodlit, so you could see thousands of faces everywhere but none on the stage. The unjustifiable add-ons to the ticket prices were a total rip-off and the price of a drink exorbitant (£10.20 for 2 beers in one bar, which went up to £10.50 for the same drinks in the second round).

The music though, was excellent and I am sure the light show was good, but the main auditorium lights and the giant speakers suspended from the ceiling obscured most of it. The video screens were also ludicrously small for a 20,000 seater venue.

Add to that the 30 minutes it takes to get from your seat to a tube train and I remembered why I hate the O2 so much.

Electric Light Orchestra was an innovator of rock music with their unique style. The band had the visionary ability to combine rock and pop with classical music. This made them pioneers for any fusion bands that were to come after.

10538 overture showcases the instrumental talent of the band and their genius with this very distinct type of avant-garde sound. Attending a concert by Electric Light Orchestra is a privilege and unique sensation of consciousness. Watching as the band manipulates the instruments to their will and creates such a fascinating sound is a real treat to the concert goer.

Electric Light Orchestra does not rely on contrivance to deliver the goods, they are just that good. Listening to one of their songs is a trip into another dimension of what is possible with imagination and passion. Their fervor for this unique style of sound is apparent immediately when you hear the music.

You can sit back in the audience and simply take in the pure and wonderful sounds and be mentally stimulated in a way unlike any other. For any fan of instrumental music, Electric Light Orchestra is a must have for a collection. A live performance is a rarity now, but should be taken in if the opportunity presents itself.

The show was great. Lynne has not lost a step. The crowd was into it. It was awesome seeing George Harrison’s son sing his dads lyrics on Handle with care. Also Lynne Has surrounded himself with some very talented musicians.

Well I've been a fan of the Electric Light Orchestra for over 40 years I was 15 years old and 11 months when they last toured in 1981 therefore I could not go. When I heard of the North American tour I bought tickets as soon as I could for the nearest city which is Detroit because I live in Indianapolis. My expectations for the show were through the roof and they we're much much better than I could have possibly imagined. They started out the show with a classic from the concerto for a rainy day called standing in the rain. The video effects combined with those fantastic strings was a marvelous opening to it was going to be a fantastic night to quote Jeff Lynne several times. There were no low points at all tonight. I am very biased in writing this review but trust me even if you're not a fan of Elo but you love good music you have a few more chances to see this band in North America and I could not recommend them any higher. God bless Jeff Lynne for all this wonderful music and I hope you come through this way again. This was a bucket list concert for me and as they went off stage arm in arm I really felt emotional but I hope it's not the last time I see him and this wonderful band

Innovators of their time, the Electric Light Orchestra found their unique brand of pop/rock merged with classical instrumentals turn them to international stars. It is worth noting that the Brummy band always found a much greater appreciation for their sound in the States than in their own homeland. Yet now with their iconic status and energetic live show attracts audiences from around the globe.

Recently reunited, the band performed a packed out set at Hyde Park to thousands of revellers who had waited patiently to hear classics such as '10538 Overture' and 'All Over The World'. Despite the band not having performed live since 2001 they sound polished and slick and the time away has clearly not affected their enthusiasm. Jeff Lyne is a fantastic frontman and conducts his audience is mass singalong to the likes of 'Telephone Line'.

One track that was left off the setlist was their film score collaboration with Olivia Newton John 'Xanadu' yet fingers crossed it will appear on the upcoming world tour. Luckily their most famous track 'Mr. Blue Sky' brought the main set to a euphoric end as the crowds danced and sang under the balmy British summer sun.

Jeff Lynne gave a tremendously entertaining show after a 35-year hiatus. Complete with a laser show and complex stage effects, his new band did a great job of presenting the classic ELO experience for a new generation. The harmonies and instrumentation were spot-on to the original recordings. My father came with me tonight and enjoyed every minute of it. He only knew 2 or 3 hits by the band, but nevertheless it was enjoyable for the man. One of the highlights of the evening for me was the performance of "Handle With Care" by the 1980s supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. Lynne brought down the house as one of new backup singers impeccably imitated the late rock icon Roy Orbison. People all around me rose from their seats and cheered when images of Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Orbison flashed across the screen and elicited a nostalgic memory trip among their thousands of fans gathered in the historic Forum this warm summer night. As Lynne ended the marathon setlist with the required Mr. Blue Sky, I believe that he did his music right. Now here comes Mr. Night.

My favorite band since I was a teenager in the 70s. Too much great music to count! Saw their tour last year in Philadelphia -- it was amazing! Jeff doesn't miss a beat, and the entire group is on point with lyrics and music. The light show is always incredible. If you haven't seen them, put it on your list and do so! In addition to my own personal nostalgia and love for the group being projected, the entire audience adds their enormous energy and enthusiasm as some are traveling down youthful memories while others are experiencing ELO magic for the first or more recent time(s). It's fabulous no matter if you're an ELO veteran or a newbie or somewhere in between. My husband and I will be enjoying Jeff Lynne's ELO in Pittsburgh tonight! I am beyond excited and look forward to another phenomenal performance this evening. I would love to one day meet Jeff Lynne and thank him personally for what his music has added to my life -- and continues to do so! In the meantime, I will give him and his crew my praise in reviews such as this.

This show was pretty close to perfect. Super tight band, stunning visuals, and a front man who seems to have hardly aged, an effect which obviously benefits from Lynne's low key style, make this show as exciting as I could possibly imagine. I'm sure there may be a few fans butt hurt over the absence of Bev Bevan etc., but I can't even imagine anyone playing with a better sound than the current lineup. Granted, I might have preferred a few deep cuts in exchange for the few later era hits (although "When I Was a Boy" was lovely and very apropos) and the greatest hits approach made "Can't Get It Out of My Head" a puzzling omission. Still, I was jumping up and down for most of the 20 songs, and opening act Dhani Harrison's participation in a Traveling Wilbury moment was special indeed. This was easily one of the best concerts I have seen in the 21st century.

ELO has been my favorite group since I was 10 (the "Out Of The Blue" album), so getting to finally see Jeff Lynne singing all those great songs was a lifelong dream finally come true. Jeff and his new band sounded fantastic. The light show would put any EDM DJ's show to shame (green lasers creating 'rain' falling on the audience, the stage becoming a giant turntable). The songlist wasn't as extensive as the concert at Wembley (no "Xanadu", "Ma Ma Belle" or "Twilight") but "All Over The World" was mind-blowing to hear and The Travelling Wilburys' "Handle With Care" had opening singer Dhani Harrison (George's son) nailing his dad's verses. Basically, the best concert I've ever seen in my life for so many reasons.

The Over and Out Tour is their last

Jeff Lynne’s ELO have announced a final tour called The Over and Out Tour.

The extensive North American trek takes in 27 dates, opening at Palm Springs Acrisure Arena on Saturday 24th August and wrapping up at Los Angeles Kia Forum on Friday 25th October.

A statement reads: "The Over and Out Tour, the final tour, is coming to the U.S. and it’s going to be out of this world! Join Jeff Lynne’s ELO for a historic night live in concert.”

Tickets go on sale at 10am local time on Friday 22nd March.

The Over and Out Tour is Jeff Lynne’s ELO’s first North American trek in exactly five years.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO last toured the UK back in autumn 2018 when they played 15 sold-out arenas. Their planned seven-date From Out of Nowhere UK Tour in October 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

It’s currently unclear whether there will be any UK and European dates on The Over and Out Tour. We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

76-year-old Jeff Lynne has sold more than 50 million records worldwide with ELO and scored 20 Top 40 hits in the UK and US.

Alongside his fabled career with ELO, Lynne was a co-founder and member of The Travelling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, as well as a producer and collaborator with some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Bryan Adams.

Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant completed a 15-date UK tour in March 2024, with his band Saving Grace. Featuring Suzi Dian. The tour opened at Bristol Beacon on Wednesday 13th March, visiting Ipswich, London, Tunbridge Wells, Peterborough, Nottingham, Hastings, Liverpool, Sheffield and Blackburn throughout the month. Dates then continue, as Robert Plant presents Saving Grace then play Harrogate in late April, Stockton and Warwick in early May, and Southend and Woking in July. Buy tickets here

Melodic rockers FM announced a 15-date 2024 UK tour to celebrate their 40th anniversary. They will play 15 shows, which started in March 2024. The stretch began in Nantwich Civic Hall on Saturday 30th March, with them visiting Brighton, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Gateshead, Leeds, Bury St Edmunds, Birmingham, Cardiff, Newbury, Exeter, Southampton, London and Glasgow before concluding at Aberdeen Lemon Tree on Saturday 1st June. British rockers Kira Mac have a fresh headline UK tour lined up for April and May 2024. The string of dates began at Leeds Brudenell on Thursday 24th April 2024, and will continue through to Saturday 11th May with a show at Stoke Underground. Playing 12 shows in total, Kira Mac will travel through Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Nottingham, Southampton, Wolverhampton, Norwich, Bristol, Newbury and London. The Rolling Stones

Another tour happening in 2024 is legendary rock band The Rolling Stones . In October 2023, guitarist Keith Richards confirmed that the band were planning to hit the road in 2024 in support of 'Hackney Diamonds' - their first album of original material in 18 years. Then, in November 2023, the band further teased 2024 tour dates as they shared a link calling fans to sign up to their mailing list, for upcoming news and announcements. After fans noticed their iconic red tongue and lips logo then appearing outside locations in North America, it was confirmed that The Rolling Stones are set to play 15 stadium shows , and one festival, on a colossal tour across the United States and Canada from April-July 2024.

The Cadillac Three

Nashville country fuzz heroes The Cadillac Three will embark on their headline UK & Ireland 'The Years Go Fast Tour' in May 2024. The tour will open at Dublin Academy on Saturday 4th May, with the band visiting Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and Cardiff before concluding with The Cadillac Three's headline slot at Highways Festival at London Royal Albert Hall on Friday 17th May. As part of a 22-date European tour, The Boss and his incredible band will be heading to the UK & Ireland in May and July 2024 ! Wayward Sons frontman and Planet Rock presenter Toby Jepson will be embarking on an 18-date solo acoustic UK tour in May and June 2024. Entitled 'My Life In Words – Live Acoustic! From Little Angels to Wayward Sons', the sizable tour begins in Crumlin on 10th May 2024, continuing up until 25th June. Buy tickets here

Rammstein will be heading on an 18-date European stadium tour throughout Summer 2024. Dates begin in Prague Airport Letnany on Saturday 11th May, and after touring through 12 European countries over three months, the shows will conclude with two concerts at Gelsenkirchen Veltins Arena - in Rammstein's native Germany - on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July 2024. At the moment, there are no UK dates on Rammstein's touring itinerary.

The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes announced in January that they have lined up a four-date headline English tour for May 2024. The short trek will see Chris and Rich Robinson and co. perform at Manchester O2 Apollo on Tuesday 14th May, then playing London Eventim Apollo and Newcastle O2 City Hall before culminating at Wolverhampton Civic Halls on Saturday 18th May. May 2024 will see that start of The Classic Tales of YES UK Tour . Progressive rock legends YES will be embarking on a nine-dates trek this May and June, including new concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall and the Bristol Beacon, together with seven dates rescheduled from the YES' postponed 2023 Relayer UK tour.

Eric Clapton

Guitar virtuoso Eric Clapton has announced a headline UK & Ireland tour for May 2024. Slowhand will play arenas in Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham and Dublin before culminating with four nights at London's world-famous Royal Albert Hall. Buy tickets here.

'Hotel California' legend Eagles will be carrying out a UK residency in May and June 2024 - joined by Steely Dan at all dates. The residency will take place in Manchester, as part of their multi-year swansong tour The Long Goodbye . The Eagles will play the UK's largest indoor arena - Manchester's new 23,500 capacity Co-op Live venue - on Friday 31st May, Saturday 1st June and Tuesday 4th June 2024. The self-professed Greatest Band That Ever Played on Planet Earth, Tenacious D, will embark on a six-date UK arena tour in May 2024. Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets will celebrate the early music of Pink Floyd on a headline UK tour in June 2024 . Richard Tandy, the keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist whose tenure with the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) spanned more than 50 years, has died, according to a statement from Jeff Lynne , the group’s frontman and co-founder. No cause of death was given, although sources said he had been ill for several years; he was 76.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy,” Lynne wrote on social media. “He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together. Sending all my love to Sheila & the Tandy family.”

ELO’s peaked commercially in the late ’70s with the “Out of the Blue” and “Discovery” albums, and moved into more electronic areas (like much of the rest of pop music), in the early ‘80s, with Tandy taking on an even greater role as the primary keyboardist. The group fell from commercial favor as the ‘80s progressed and released the final album of its initial run, “Balance of Power,” in 1986. Lynne subsequently relocated to California and worked closely as a producer-musician with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and the Traveling Wilburys.

When Lynne reformed ELO in 2001 for the “Zoom” album, Tandy played on it and joined for the ensuing tour; when the group was reformed as Jeff Lynne’s ELO in 2015 , he did not play on the album but was behind his keyboards center stage on the following tour, with a vocal microphone that he used only to say the vocoder’ed words “Mr. Blue Sky.” He was introduced to the audience affectionately by Lynne as “a guy who’s been playing with me for 44 years.”

Last month, Jeff Lynne’s ELO announced dates for what was described as the group’s “final” tour, “Over and Out,” although the lineup of musicians was not announced.

The Birmingham band’s front man Jeff Lynne announced the news on Facebook , writing: ‘He was a remarkable musician & friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.’

Tandy was born in Birmingham in 1948 and leaves behind his wife Sheila Tandy, with whom he shared a home in Wales.

Bev Bevan and Roy Wood founded Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1970 and Tandy soon joined the group, having previously been classmates with Bevan.

The pair recruited eventual bandleader Jeff Lynne the same year and began to shape their now iconic sound.

Tandy first performed with the group as the bassist then later as the keyboardist, but was a multi-instrumentalist and singer who was often credited with being a central force behind the band’s success.

His array of keyboards – which included a Minimoog, Clavinet, Mellotron, and classic piano – were part of what made records like A New World Record, Out of the Blue, Discovery, and Time so distinctive.

Tandy was also responsible for the trademark synthesizer sound that was integral to the band’s music until they split up in 1986. ELO was known for blending rock’n’roll with orchestral components, creating disco-infused pop music that became essential to the era.

The group released albums and singles throughout the 70s and 80s, many of which charted in the UK.

They reached mainstream success in 1977 with their album Out of the Blue, often considered to be their magnum opus, which featured hits like Turn to Stone and Its Over.

Their albums Discovery (1979) and the science-fiction-themed concept album Time (1981) both reached the top of the British charts and cemented the group’s place amongst music royalty.

Between 1973 and 1986 the band sold over 50 million records worldwide and earned 27 Top 40 songs on the UK Singles Chart and fifteen Top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Lynne eventually reformed the band in the 2000s and Tandy was the only member to rejoin him in the new iteration of the group, making he and Lynne the longest contributing members of ELO.

While Lynne is credited with much of the band’s songwriting and musical arrangements, Tandy has often been remembered as his right hand man in the studio who was as responsible for ELO’s final musical products as Lynne.

Tandy also formed the Tandy Morgan Band in 1985 with Dave Morgan and Martin Smith, musicians who had performed live with ELO in the past. The released one album, Earthrise, the same year.

In 2017, Tandy was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame alongside other members of the band.

ELO announced their final tour last month, but it remains to be seen whether the band will perform as planned given Tandy’s sudden passing.

Richard Tandy, ‘remarkable’ musician who helped shape ELO’s futuristic sound, dies aged 76

Electric Light Orchestra keyboardist Richard Tandy, who blended Beatles-style pop with grand orchestral arrangements, has died aged 76, his bandmate Jeff Lynne announced.

The ELO frontman paid tribute to the “remarkable” musician in a post to Instagram, referring to Tandy as his long-time collaborator and “dear friend”.

“It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my long-time collaborator and dear friend Richard Tandy,” Lynne wrote. “He was a remarkable musician and friend and I’ll cherish the lifetime of memories we had together.

“Sending all my love to Sheila and the Tandy family.”

Tandy was responsible for helping to shape the signature futuristic sound of the British rock band, best known for hits such as “Mr Blue Sky” and “Last Train To London”, with bombastic piano compositions that brought vim and vigour to their songs.

His riffs drove many of ELO’s most popular songs. The New York Times cited critic Donald A Guarisco, who wrote for the All Music Guide that it was Tandy’s “funky clavinet riff that duels with the group’s vocals during the chorus” of “Evil Woman”, turning it into a “multi-textured feast of pop hooks”.

Born in Birmingham, he joined ELO following the release of the band’s debut album, The Electric Light Orchestra, in 1971, having met drummer Bev Bevan at school.

“The Greyhound was memorable; the first tune, ‘10538’, was good, but then all the changes between tunes became confusing and I guess it all got shambolic,” he recalled of his start with the band in a 1999 fanzine interview. “After that, as far as I was concerned, things just went from one good thing to another.”

He initially played bass, then took over as keyboardist after the departure of co-founder Roy Wood, who left to form Wizzard. He would go on to help shape their prog rock, futuristic sound with his performances on the Wurlitzer electronic piano, Minimoog synthesiser, the Clavinet, Mellotron and piano.

Tandy remained a core member of ELO through its ever-evolving lineups, alongside Lynne and Bevan, until the band split in 1986, and was the only member to return with Lynne for 2001’s Zoom, which also featured guest musicians George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

He played on every ELO album except 1971’s No Answer; the band have to date sold more than 50 million records worldwide and achieved 27 Top 40 singles. He and Lynne were reunited in 2012 to record a live set of ELO’s biggest hits at Lynne’s Bungalow Palace home recording studio, which aired on TV.

Tandy joined ELO again when Lynne reformed the band as Jeff Lynne’s ELO in 2014, performing an outdoor concert in London’s Hyde Park.

Asked why Tandy was the only original member he brought back, Lynne answered in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone: “Richard is my lifetime man in the group. He’d be in the studio with me when other people just wouldn’t be.

“It’s just my choice,” he continued. “He’s a great musician, a great piano player and I really enjoy his company.”

Tandy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2017, alongside Lynne, Bevan and Wood, and was described then as Lynne’s “multi-instrumentalist, co-orchestrator and valued musical partner”.

“Tandy was crucial in ELO’s creation of a realm where rock and classical music could exist together,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shared in a post following the news of the musician’s death.

Tandy’s passing comes just a month after Lynne announced ELO’s final tour, dubbed The Over and Out Tour, which was scheduled to begin in North America in August this year. European and UK dates had yet to be announced.

His last show took place at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall in 2016, where he performed “Mr Blue Sky” for the final time.

He is survived by his second wife, Sheila.
