A Peaceful Paddle on the Russian River!

This morning trip takes you down a quaint section of a five-mile stretch of the Russian River that starts north of Healdsburg. This is a three to six-hour paddle with a 3:30 p.m. checkout time. Paddle a canoe or kayak on this self-guided trip, rated as Class I flow with enough current to keep you navigating and negotiating through over-hanging trees and a few sandbars. Our trip spans a beautiful section for swimming, picnicking, fishing and enjoying an abundance of wildlife.

How it Works

Park at Healdsburg Veteran’s Memorial Beach. Check-in at River’s Edge headquarters where our friendly staff will assist you with the check-in process and help to get you outfitted. Shortly after, we shuttle you five miles upriver, (15-minute drive), where our accomplished beach staff prepare you with a safety talk, help you pack your boat, and provide paddling instruction as needed. We provide PFD’s for adults, children, and dogs. Then you’re on your own to make your way down the river at your leisure back to headquarters, where you checked in.

We do not have food for sale, but you are welcome to bring your own picnic lunch or order food from Memorial Beach Market & Deli located across the bridge.

What to Expect on the River

The Russian River is a low flow sandbar river during the summer period. The average depth is knee to waist deep with shallow sandbars and swimming holes deeper than 10 feet. The upper river, where we operate, is recognized for clarity and consistent flow as well as wildlife such as herons, egrets, turtles, osprey, various waterfowl, deer, and an occasional eagle or otter.

The Russian River is lake fed and very comfortable for swimming. There are deep pools, shallow riffles, and occasional sandbars that may cause you to briefly get out of your boat to pass through.

Top 7 Destinations For Kayaking In The Russian River

  • Post category: Destinations
  • Post published: February 13, 2022

Russian River kayaking is a great way to spend a day outside enjoying the natural beauty of the United States. The river runs for about 84 miles from its origins in Mendocino County to its destination in the Pacific Ocean . Along the way, it winds between oak and redwood forests, around cliffs, and under bridges. There are plenty of places to kayak and enjoy lunch or picnic lunch while taking in the scenery.

It’s easy to see why, with the proximity to the Russian River and all of its natural beauty. The river itself winds through redwood forests and is fed by natural hot springs and clear mountain streams. Though it can be done by novice kayakers, some people choose to hire a competent guide before going down the river.

Overall, the Russian River is a beautiful place to kayak, but it can also be dangerous if not properly prepared. For example, it is important to know the river’s tidal schedule and think about whether you want to bring your phone along with you and risk losing it. Regardless of what precautions you take, some accidents might happen. And there will always be risks- so it’s best to prepare for them ahead of time!

A Brief To Kayak In The Russian River

If you’re thinking about kayaking in the Russian River, here are some tips to help you plan your trip . The lower Russian River can get chilly during the summer, but you’ll be on the water for a few hours. Bring some snacks and water along, and be prepared to spend several hours in the water. It’s also a good idea to bring a cell phone, just in case. It can be difficult to communicate on the river. So having a cell on you will be a lifesaver.

While 90 percent of the Russian River’s watershed is private, you’ll find that many spots are well-maintained and offer a wide variety of watercraft. Fortunately, you can also rent boats and enjoy the area’s scenic beauty. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, there are plenty of opportunities for all skill levels. Alternatively, you can rent a kayak at a local riverfront lodge.

The lower Russian River, from Healdsburg to the river outlet, is a popular stretch of the river. This part of the river is relatively shallow, and the water is warm enough that you can stand up and walk across parts of it. While the water is very shallow in this section, you may want to use a kayak or another shallow watercraft to avoid getting too wet. It’s best to wear a wetsuit and wear sunscreen when kayaking on this section of the river.

The Best Time To Go Kayaking In The Russian River

It is best to go kayaking in the Russian River during the summer when temperatures are higher. The water temperature is still warm, and the river will be very pleasant. You can also see dozens of birds in this area, including ospreys, red-tailed hawks, kingfishers, and all types of herons. While the river can be unpredictable, there is no greater thrill than being surrounded by a large population of birds. Moreover, it’s also important to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and other safety equipment to avoid any accidents.

Before launching your kayak in the Russian River, it’s important to pl an your trip . Consider the time you’ll be on the water, the type of weather you’ll be facing, and how much time you have available for your journey. Also, you’ll want to know how long the trip will take. If you’re launching from the beach, you should add at least an hour to your kayaking time.

If you plan to do some river kayaking, it’s a good idea to have some equipment and snacks with you. You can purchase paddles, dry bags, and life vests from professional river guides. Despite the relatively mild water in the lower Russian River, there is still a risk of being swept away. Personal flotation devices are the most important safety precautions when you’re on a kayaking trip.

Russian River Kayaking Regulations

In addition to following boating regulations, visitors should be mindful of the area’s other regulations. Several businesses near the river have set hours or restrictions on seating. Large gatherings are still prohibited in Sonoma County. In addition, visitors should dress appropriately and practice social distancing.

The lower Russian River from Duncans Mills to Jenner by the Sea is home to many species of wildlife. The Lower Russian is a popular habitat for Pacific Pond Turtles, Chinook Salmon, and Harbor Seals. The rocky shoreline provides bird watchers with a spectacular view of Osprey’s nests, as well as Great Blue Herons fishing in the shallows. This is one of the few rivers in the world where the two species can coexist without causing havoc.s

While the lower Russian is home to wildlife, it’s still important to take safety precautions . The area has many dangerous species that can threaten your safety, so make sure you know the latest regulations. For example, the area has several class I rapids. So you should wear a life vest and a personal flotation device especially when you’re kayaking alone . If you’re traveling with children, make sure they have a personal flotation device with them.

Russian River Kayak Launch

If you want to explore the upper and lower sections of the Russian River, there are a number of public access points.

In the lower Russian River, there are many public access points. There are several public campgrounds in the area, but the river can become quite chilly at certain times of the year. The rivers have an otter population, which makes the river a wonderful place for wildlife watching. During the winter , the river is often chilly. But the otters keep the warm temperatures in the bay area .

There are several public access points in the Russian River. The lower Russian is best for families. You can find many launching points in this river and enjoy kayaking in a scenic area. There are many public access points on the lower part of the river. It’s important to note that 95 percent of the watershed is private land, so there are only a few public access points along the lower stretch. But if you plan to camp on the upper Russian, you can access it through a campground or a parking lot.

Russian River Kayak Rental

You will find numerous rentals along the banks of the river, from single and two-person kayaks to stand-up paddleboards. Choosing a Russian River kayak rental company that can deliver your vessel to your destination is a great idea, as it will allow you to enjoy the river to its fullest.

Most rental companies will deliver your boat to your destination. However, you can also rent one at Riverwood Cottage, which is only ten minutes away from the Russian River. There are also stand-up paddleboard tours along with the Russian. These trips begin at Steelhead Beach and end at Schoolhouse Campground. Russian River Adventures

Looking for the perfect family activity in Healdsburg? Paddle down the Russian River and enjoy all the peaceful tranquility that the river provides. Opt for the half-day paddle if you have little ones or the full-day for older kids (full-day is 9 miles and takes you about 5-6 hours). You walk from the office in Healdsburg to the launch location and Russian River Adventures drops your car off at the final destination so you can jet when you are done. The summer of 2021 provided water levels that were totally fine for paddling with just a few short distances where you needed to push your canoe over shallow spots. Russian River Adventures does a great job of marking areas to avoid on the river.

Insider tips: Pack more food and drinks than you think you'll need and reapply sunscreen at regular intervals so nobody gets fried.

Campground Oasis for Families This campground offered a peaceful escape unlike any other. It was exceptionally clean, family-friendly, and perfect for those seeking a true camping experience. The owner clearly puts a lot of care into maintaining a safe haven for guests. While I understand some reviews mentioned restrictions on certain breeds or loud music, it's important to respect the owner's desire to create a safe environment for everyone. This campground prioritizes the safety of all guests, especially children. I really appreciated this since our god mother was attacked in Danville by a Pit on leash and her shoulder and fingers were dislocated. I'm sure many pits are very sweet but statics and experience have lead me to feel otherwise. BUT... there are plenty of other campgrounds that are comfortable with your sweet companion. The location is perfect, surrounded by tall trees for plenty of shade. My kids had a great time, and everyone around us was friendly. Overall, this campground is ideal for families seeking a relaxing and secure getaway. If you're looking for a party atmosphere, this might not be the best fit.

kayak tours russian river

A really solid experience here -- super clean, gorgeous surroundings, friendly staff, and very friendly fellow campers. Located just off River Road around Guernville and by the Russian River, this roughly 35-campsite canyon is absolutely spectacular in its setting. However, if you're situated closer to the road -- really a two-lane freeway -- you *will* hear the traffic, oftentimes replete with the rumble/strip noise as vehicles pass one another (it's a relatively long straightaway in this section) or just meander towards the center to make some noise that does make its way up the canyon. We also had one devil-demon-baby-monster a few sites away that at random times would pitch a fit -- think of the loudest crying shrieks you could imagine, amp that up by 200 decibels and, well, that's what we went through. One time at about 7pm and then a few more occurrences through the night. We do believe, however, that they were asked to leave by the manager in the morning, but that's unconfirmed. There are plenty of rules to abide by, and there is some vetting going on when you do check in, and we're grateful for that -- people-wise, devil baby notwithstanding, it was super quiet and respectful. We had a fellow camper help a couple different people -- ourselves included -- with jumps of dead batteries. Other reviews talk about how dangerous crossing River Road can be, and take that with a grain of salt. Yes, you do need to be patient but there's always a significant break in the traffic at fairly regular intervals. Just be smart about it, and it's really a non-issue. We got the impression that many campers are regulars here, and we can see why. Other reviewers also mention Chris and his potential to be less than friendly--we didn't experience that at all, just him being super friendly, welcoming and helpful. We just wish he didn't stick us in a lower campsite for our first visit hahaha. Overall -- great place, location, people, scenery and weather. We will absolutely be back!!

Super clean, well-structured and just stunningly peaceful camping site. Chris and Corina were so helpful and friendly throughout our stay. They had great café and food recommendations in the nearby towns as well as suggestions for day-time activities such as tubing, golfing and hiking. We followed their advice and a had a fantastic time. The camping sites were super clean and always with a picnic table and fire ring. We felt "far away enough" from our neighbors, but at the same time appreciated not being completely remote. The bathhouse was clean, had all the necessary supplies and perfectly central. We heard birds, saw a turkey strolling around and felt well-protected from the sun thanks to the beautiful trees. We look forward to coming back and enjoy this beautiful campground with our family and friends. Thanks again Chris and Corina!

Great campground! The bay laurel trees form a canopy overhead shading the campground and making it incredibly beautiful. The entire place is very well kept. There was always someone cleaning the bathrooms and the dishwashing area was also impeccably clean. Both the bathrooms and dishwashing stations were well stocked with nice soaps. The river is just across the road. The campground is close to town and restaurants. Chris and his wife were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place for a great getaway.

This campground bans dogs based on breed, including pit bulls and Staffordshire terriers. My dog is a mix of many things, including those two breeds, and unfortunately, you cannot call yourself a "Dog-friendly campground" while stereotyping against breeds. Pitbulls and staffy's are some of the most loving, gentle, and patient dogs out there, and consistently rank in the top 5 for the most gentle breed by the American Temperament Test Society. Please stop perpetuating backward stereotypes when chihuahuas and poodles, breeds that are statistically more aggressive, are allowed in. My dog is a trained service dog for a veteran and this policy is a real shame.

Great quiet campground. Well kept up and clean. Family friendly and our kids love going and exploring the stumps.

Photo of slow c.

We were told 'we could hear the road from our site' - that was a giant understatement! Our site had so much road noise I would not have elected to have a one hour picnic there let alone sleep in a tent or try to hang out around a fire, relax and commune with nature. All the rules about no radios and etc. are kind of pointless when there is a blaring freeway with high speeding cars right next to your camp. I ended up sleeping in the car to get a break from the noise. My kids were super stressed from the noise too. I would NEVER stay here again. But if you must, I'd only consider sites in the very back of the property - where you can 'hear the road' but its not overwhelming to the point of discomfort. It is clean and there is lots of infrastructure and lots of rules. Other guests e seemed nice and oddly there were many folks who were repeat customers. I honestly can't support a business that would find it acceptable to rent people campsites that are that uncomfortably loud (ours wasn't even the closest to the road) - its somewhere between dishonest and unethical.

Photo of Jordan F.

Came to check out the place. Beautiful campground. The host was very odd and dismissive. When we inquired about reserving multiple campsites for our family, the host stated that " we cant have more than 8 people that know each other here due to the potential for noise". ?? So if you are coming with a family or children or more than 8 people that have met before or anything that may potentially "disturb their echo chamber" I suggest you look elsewhere. Also pricey.. $48 for 2 people and $7 per additional person. Such a shame it is such a beautiful campground.

Photo of Tatian G.

What a great find! I hesitated to write this because sometimes you find a place and you just want to keep it to yourself. Chris and his wife are great hosts... positive energy, helpful, available, friendly. The campsites are lovely. Definitely some are better than others when it comes to size, proximity to the road noise, and flatness. I wouldn't say there's a "bad" site there but we really lucked out with #13. They rent innertubes for $5 a day... great deal. Crossing the road with younger kids is harrowing but we made it twice a day each day we were there. The walk to the river is about 1/4 mile and relatively easy. The river spot is great! You can wade in and swim in deep spots if you like. Or walk ten minutes over rocks upstream and float down for about 45 minutes. It was so relaxing and refreshing. We were able to get a campsite on a Monday easily without reservations. Weekends would be much tougher.

Disc Golf Course

Our seasonal disc golf course is closed for the season.

Disc Golf Course Map

Enjoy the seasonal 18-hole disc golf course when open from October 15 through March 15 during regular park hours. The first tee box is located just south of the main parking lot. Please follow all course guidelines to ensure the enjoyment and sustainability of the course. Loaner discs are available at the park office.

Why does the course close seasonally?   Closing the course allows time for the trees and plants to repair and grow without sustaining impacts from discs and foot traffic. This practice helps maintain a healthy and sustainable course and ecosystem. Thank you for assisting us in keeping this course sustainable.

Day 1 - Arrive at 7 pm and sleep in GAH parking lot.

Day 2 - 7:45 am RV oriention, stock RV with groceries, buy bear spray and obtain fishing permits, drive to Palmer area. Option to do Musk Ox Farm or Independence Mine State Historical Park (depending on time/energy levels). Drive to Manatuska Glacier State Recreation Site for overnight.

Day 3 - 9:30 am - 1 pm. Private Manatuska Glacier Hike with MICA Gudies. Leave after and drive to Denali . Overnight at Riley Creek Campground.

Day 4 - Check out Denali Visitors Center, option for easy hike by visitors center or visit to huskies. 1 pm ATV tour with Denali ATV Adventures. Drive to Teklanika and overnight.

Day 5 - Hike within Denali off of hiker bus (hoping rangers can give us some guidance the day before). Overnight at Teklanika.

Day 6 - Hike within Denali off of hiker bus. Overnight at Teklanika.

Day 7 - Drive out of Denali, stopping at Savage River Loop hike on way out of park. I currenly have an RV site booked in Palmer this night, but we are totally open to changing this.

Day 8 - nothing booked - where should go and what should we do??

Day 9 - Exit Glacier Hike (not sure if we will do the easier one or attempt the Harding Icefields). Overnight in Seward at Reserection South.

Day 10 - Boat Ride and Kayak at Aialik Glacier w/ Kayak Adventures Worldwide. Overnight in Sewared at Reserection South.

Day 11 - Make way to Homer - no other plans for the day, could spend more time in Seward or make stops. Overnight at Homer Split Campground.

Day 12 - Overnight at Homer Split Campground. No plans for this day- was consdering hiring a water taxi to Kachemak Bay State Park or a visit to Seldovia?

Day 13 - Bear Flightseeing and Salmon Fishing with Talon Air at 12 pm. Drop off fish with fish processor (availability confirmed) and overnight in Soldonta (would love a campground recommendation).

Day 14 - Pick up fish from processors. Make Way to Cooper Landing. Russian River Falls Hike. Russian River Campground is currently fully booked for this night - I will keep checking back for avaialbity but plan to book at Cooper Creek South unless somebody recommends soemthing else.

Day 15 - No plans, but open to any stop suggestions. Have RV back to GAH by 5 pm. Fly out at 11:59 pm (we have access to the RV for as long as we need it, but cannot drive after 5 pm).

I am very open to any tweeks in the itineary and/or suggestions on what to do on nights 7&8. I am also not tied to the idea of Homer...so we could potentially push our Seward nights into the Homer nights and have 4 nights free in the middle of the trip. I think it would be difficult to move our bear flightseeing and Denali reservations at this point. I am also questionining if our kayak trip will have enough anaimal viewing and I am wondering if we should add a day in Whitter or Seward for dedicated boat ride for animal and glacier viewing.

Thank you!!

Nicely laid out itinerary. :)

Day 2 – some ideas to have on hand if you haven’t already eliminated them: 1 hr. trolley tour of ANC for a nice overview, Eagle River Nature Center for a nature hike, Eklutna Village to see the Spirit Houses, hike, bike or kayak at Eklutna Lake ( https://www.lifetimeadventures.net/ ), Lions Head hike near Matanuska.

Day 5 & 6 – Do you have Tek Passes, which give you 1 reserved trip plus the next day you can go free on a seat-available basis?

Day 8 – drive to Whittier (2+ hrs) with scenic stops, for 10:30 a.m. Tunnel opening (open for 15 min on the half-hour going in, 15 min. on the hour coming back out). 26 Glaciers cruise . Possible hikes: Portage Pass hike (to just the ridge for views, or Check schedule for possible bore tide: https://girdwood.com/bore-tide-schedule/ . Overnight Williwaw CG.

Day 9 – drive to Seward (2 hrs) with stop at Wildlife Conservation Center. If you do the Exit hike maybe plan to start out with the free Ranger-guided one: https://www.nps.gov/kefj/planyourvisit/ranger-programs.htm . The Rangers are usually great with kids. If the pace is too slow (the Ranger will go at the slowest person’s pace), just thank him/her for his commentary and go on ahead—and certainly you can do part of Harding if you want. If any of your family starts getting tired, turn back (warn the kids not to get TOO tired before letting you know, lol, they still have to go back down, and going back down is when most injuries occur!) Other things to do: SeaLife Center, Ididaride Sled dog ride, stroll the docks/beach looking for possible wildlife, Tonsina hike, etc.

Day 10 – I assume you have a private tour booked since your kids are too young for the regular one? Evening: maybe Tonsina hike.

Day 11 – part of the morning in Seward if you still have things to do. Drive to Homer (4 hrs). Kenai Lake and Tern Lake for views. If the weather is clear, do the Russian River Falls hike today (always take advantage of good weather). Other ideas for stops: https://www.alaska.org/guide/anchorage-to-homer

Day 12 – either water taxi to Grewingk Glacier hike or Rainbow Tours to Seldovia. Also check to see if there are negative tides for tidepooling.

Day 13 – Soldotna Campgrounds: https://campgrounds.rvlife.com/regions/alaska/soldotna

Day 14 – I would suggest driving back to Williwaw CG, with stop for RR Falls hike if not done on day 11. Possible hikes/stops: Wildlife Conservation Center (check website for programs), Begich-Boggs Visitor Center, Trail of blue Ice, Byron Glacier hike (might see snow caves but if you do, too dangerous to go inside though you’ll likely see ignorant folks doing just that—a couple of years back a woman died when a cave collapsed on her head). Also if you’re at Byron just after the sun sets, look for iceworms (yes, they’re real!). Overnight Williwaw?

Day 15 – Goldpanning at Crow Creek Mine if the kids would enjoy that. Maybe Crow Pass hike to Raven Glacier (about 5 hrs, though you don’t have to go that far if you’re getting tired). Reviews: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g60880-d4598379-Reviews-Crow_Pass_National_Historic_Trail-Anchorage_Alaska.html . More info: https://hikingalaska.net/2020/01/21/raven-glacier/ Drive back to ANC (1 hr) with scenic stops (though you have to cross traffic to get to most of the pull-outs, which are on the west side of the highway...you can always drive ahead to a good place to turn around, and double back).

Don't know how to fit it in your route but do try to stay in a state campground at least once. Very primitive for sure, but quie an experience.. You're likely well off the grid.( the campground attendant has radio so you are safe)., We stayed in two spots for a night each. Campfire. No running water. Pit toilet ( the "can").

Enjoy the trip. Fascinating spots.

Thank you! So helpful-I really appreciate the detailed reply.
