The Week That Was: A European Legacy

It's common to say that a large event has a "buzz" to it, and while I'm sure that's true I'll say that the aura inside a tournament hall is unlike any sporting event I've been to. It's never a raucous environment, and the buzz isn't from a crowd waiting to explode in roaring excitement.

What is present at the best Magic tournaments is a buzz made up of whispers, of comments made in passing or draft bombs spotted across the table. Even as players find success, they're trained to hold it in, keeping their focus tight lest they let up and slip up in any way.

Whatever you want to call it, it's something every high-level Magic competitor can recognize. And this tournament had it all: a monstrous field of more than 1,000 players, a format with a ton of hype and innovation behind it, the biggest names new and old from across the region, and invites to important future tournaments on the line. As Ben Jones shuffled up for the Top 8, it had all the familiar trappings of the other memorable large-field events where he had made Top 8: Grand Prix Madrid in 2018 and the Regional Championship in Sofia late last year. With Pro Tour experience under his belt and now a second notable Top 8 in six months, Jones was riding high in the Magic world.

Except this wasn't a Pro Tour, or a Regional Championship. It was the Top 8 of LMS Prague , the latest stop on the Legacy European Tour series. And to these players, it mattered every bit as much.

"It was awesome having so many people in one room that share a love for the game," Jones said. "It reminded me a lot of an old Grand Prix."

Congratulations to the Top 8 players of the GOQ (Modern) 1. @RespectTheCat90 2. @BenJonesMTG 3. @IGerschenson 4. Jonas Nieke 5. @FabianWinner4 6. Marco Cammilluzzi 7. @bg2966611 8. You might not know it, but "it felt like a Grand Prix" is strong praise. We spend a lot of time in our columns here focusing on the Regional Championships (and their winners) throughout the year, leading to the Pro Tours and eventually the World Championship (and you'll want to read Frank's article this week if any of that sounds interesting to you ), but they're not the only game in town these days. The Grand Prix circuit famously offered players across the world regular, large, open-to-all tournaments, at a cadence more frequent than the Regional Championships of today. It's also where many of the Top 8 regulars at Regional Championships today cut their teeth competitively. For those on what is still affectionately called "the grind" that meant popping up week to week in a new city and battling in a new tournament hall after battling through a new airport and taxi ride.

In the end, the city didn't matter—it was about the Magic and gathering with friends. It's something we missed dearly over the last few years, so when Jones says that LMS Prague "felt like a Grand Prix" consider that a ringing endorsement of the tournament.

That sentiment was echoed by everyone I've talked with about the tournament, which brought together players from across all of Europe for a weekend that had a little bit of everything, for everyone in the community.

had a really awesome weekend at #LMSprague even though the mainevent didn‘t go too well. and we got to meet Mengu and hand him over our very Pauper to the People Playmat. As tabletop Magic has rebuilt itself over the past few years, we've seen the success of tournament circuits like the NRG Series in North America help fill the void that many players found lacking during the era of solely online play, and the celebration in Prague was a perfect example of the Magic community coming back together.

"It really has been great getting to play the game and see the world again—I've been to five different countries in the past six months!" Jones explained. "I played a lot of Magic Online over the pandemic, and that definitely helped contribute to my success now that paper is back."

The Wales native is quickly building onto a resume that already featured a win at Grand Prix Madrid, and his semifinals appearance in Prague is the latest for the Pro Tour regular. As the paper play circuit has spun back up so has his testing network, and he worked with Andrea Piemonti, Arne Huschenbeth, David Inglis, Louis Deltour, and Max Vervoort on the Indomitable Creativity combo Modern deck he took to the Top 4.

"I came to Prague just aiming to get an invite to the next event in Athens" he admitted. "I achieved that goal and a lot more!"

He did that in a stacked field. Not only did the Top 8 feature a former Pro Tour Top 8 member and World Magic Cup captain and champion Marco Cammilluzzi—who defeated Jones in the penultimate round—but also a two-time Grand Prix winner in Immanuel Gerschenson. That shouldn't come as a huge surprise; everywhere you looked throughout the hall you were likely to bump into a well-known player or FNM end boss—it was possibly the largest gathering of Europe's best Magic players in years.

Dont call it a comeback, but boomer me is 12:2:1 and locked for t8 at #LMSPrague 😍 — Immanuel Gerschenson (@IGerschenson) April 2, 2023

Just ask Markus Leicht how much this tournament meant. He was just dipping his toes into the competitive circuit back in 2017, and back then he followed the Grand Prix circuit assiduously and learned very quickly that this was a goal he wanted to chase. The pandemic may have delayed that dream, but after defeating Cammilluzzi in the finals he finally found himself accomplishing a goal six years in the making.

"I've been doing a lot of Magic Online grinding over the past two years, so much so that I started streaming about eight months ago. After Covid hit, I became even more competitive online," Leicht explained. "Modern is my main format, and making the Top 8 of 100-plus payer Modern Challenges really made me confident and helped me believe I could make the Top 8 of a big event one day. I worked with Phillip Bogensperger on my deck and testing, and I felt good going into the tournament."

It paid off perfectly—Leicht refined his mulligan strategy with the Five-Color Elementals build with Keruga, the Macrosage he had been working on since the banning of Yorion. He said he felt "unstoppable" throughout the tournament as the matchups went his way and so did his draws. In all, it was a blur that Leicht has trouble remembering the details—but will never forget.

Congratulations @RespectTheCat90 for being our GOQ Winner at #LMSPrague with his deck "Five-Color Elementals"! 🏆 See you in Athens, Markus! 🏛️ pic.twitter.com/JRrOT4JM04 — Legacy European Tour 🔜 LMS Valencia (@LegacyEUTour) April 2, 2023

"Winning the tournament feels unreal, and it took me a few days to really realize it," Leicht said after traveling back home to Vienna, Austria. "When I started in my first-ever Cardmarket series tournament back in 2017, it was always my dream to Top 8 a Grand Prix, and now I win this 1,000-person tournament. Unreal."

It feels so unreal when you finally achieve your goal. When i started playing Magic compedetivly in 2016 my #1 goal was to win a GP one day. I know this wasnt really a GP, but for me i achieved my Goal ☺️ Thanks everyone for the support ❤️ Next goal is winning a Pro Tour i guess pic.twitter.com/CHpVyWZsWh — RespectTheCat (@RespectTheCat90) April 3, 2023

Looking Ahead

The Legacy European Tour continues on with stops in Valencia and Athens coming up on May 26-28 and June 9-19, respectively, and is sure to feature the best high-level Magic Europe has to offer.

On the Pro Tour side, the Machine marches on to Minneapolis . We're in a small lull as the new set drops (I made it out to a prerelease to get in some testing with battles!), but rest assured we're in the calm before the storm. The best players from not just Europe but the entire world converge at MagicCon: Minneapolis on May 5-7 for Pro Tour March of the Machine, and that means that right now teams across the globe are hunkering down and digging into their draft packs. Soon, we'll have testing houses fill with players working out how to break battles and hopefully Standard along with it. It all leads to a packed hall Friday morning, when the buzz will sound identical to the room in Prague.

Phyrexia: All Will Be One gave us the return of the Pro Tour and a legendary win for a legendary player . What will March of the Machine hold? We'll find out in two short weeks.

Asian Swing: Who won, how it unfolded and what it means

The 2024 Race to Dubai continued to provide intriguing storylines as new champions emerged on the DP World Tour during the Asian Swing .

Blank 4 Grids Collage

While next week's U.S. PGA Championship is included as part of the Global Swing, points accrued in the four Major Championships do not count in the Swing rankings so the overall champion was confirmed at the conclusion of the Volvo China Open alongside several other rewards.

Here, we recap how the four counting events unfolded, what the Swing Champion earned as the key issues at stake were answered in China and offer a reminder of the timeline for the rest of the season.

Who won the Asian Swing?

With a third top-five finish in as many events at the weather-affected Volvo China Open, after earlier back-to-back runner-up finishes, Sebastian Söderberg topped the Asian Swing Rankings.

The Swede was a consistent force during the four counting events on the third of five Global Swings that form part of a new-look DP World Tour schedule.

As the champion, Söderberg earned a $200,000 bonus as a swing winner, is now exempt for each of the 'Back 9' events and secured one of three spots on offer into the field for the 2024 US PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

While disappointed to miss out on adding a second DP World Tour title to his name during the recent stretch of events, he is looking forward to making his third appearance in a Major - and first at the US PGA Championship - next week.

"Right now, it hurts a little bit not coming out on top here [in China], but I've been playing really good golf for the last four events," said the 33-year-old, who now sits fourth in the season-long Race to Dubai Rankings.

"I know the game is there, I just need to hit a few better shots towards the end sometimes. But you play to win."

Söderberg follows Rory McIlroy (International Swing) and Min Woo Lee (Opening Swing) as the third Swing champion in the first phase of the Race to Dubai schedule.

What else was decided in China?

The big winner in China was Adrian Otaegui . A bogey-free five-under-par 65 in the final round helped the Spaniard to his fifth DP World Tour title.

With it, he climbed 35 places on the Asian Swing rankings to third and claimed a prized spot in the field for the US PGA Championship.

"Playing some Majors this year was a big goal for me," reflected the Spaniard after he pipped Porsche Singapore Classic winner Jesper Svensson to third place in the standings.

Joining Söderberg and Otaegui at the second men's Major of the season will be Keita Nakajima , who did not play in China, after the Japanese won his maiden DP World Tour title earlier in the Swing in India.

How did the Asian Swing unfold?

With just four counting events, DP World Tour newcomers and established figures were as ever under pressure to impress and mark their mark during the Asian Swing.

After a fine start to the campaign as a rookie, European Challenge Tour graduate Svensson won his first DP World Tour title with a play-off victory over Aphibarnrat at Laguna National Golf Resort Club in March.

In his 14th event on the DP World Tour, the Swede matched the course record with a closing 63 before extra holes were required as Aphibarnrat eagled the last in a dramatic climax to regulation play.

A week later, another first-time winner emerged as former amateur World Number One Nakajima went wire to wire to win the Hero Indian Open by a commanding four-shot margin.

After Scottie Scheffler underlined his status as the pre-tournament favourite with victory at the Masters Tournament, there was more Japanese success at the ISPS HANDA – CHAMPIONSHIP.

On home soil, Yuto Katsuragawa became the sixth Japanese winner in DP World Tour history and the third of the season, after Rikuya Hoshino won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters during the International Swing.

And then, most recently, Otaegui made it two victories apiece for Europe and Asia during the Swing as he became the first Spaniard to win on the DP World Tour so far this season.

What is still to come on the DP World Tour schedule?

While focus quickly switches to the upcoming US PGA Championship at Valhalla, ten years on from Rory McIlroy’s victory at the Kentucky-based venue, it won’t be long before matters return to Europe.

The European Swing, the penultimate of the five Global Swings, features six counting events either side of the U.S. Open midway through.

As with the four other Global Swings, the European Swing Champion will earn $200,000, qualify for each of the ‘Back 9’ events, while the leading member not already exempt will qualify into the next Rolex Series event, this being the Genesis Scottish Open.

To view the European Swing schedule in full, click here .

The Closing Swing then runs from July 2024 (Genesis Scottish Open) to August 2024 (Danish Golf Championship).

The second phase of the season, the 'Back 9', will then encompass nine of the DP World Tour’s most historic tournaments and national Opens and will run from August 2024 to October 2024.

The top 110 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings at the conclusion of this phase in October will earn their DP World Tour cards for 2025 while the top 70 qualify for Phase Three, the DP World Tour Play-Off.

This phase, running in November 2024, will comprise the two final Rolex Series events of the season: the Abu Dhabi Championship and the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

legacy european tour

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

4. Stockholm, Sweden — total average cost: $935, safety score: 53.86

3. Hamburg, Germany — total average cost: $903, safety score: 57.51

2. Gelsenkirchen, Germany — total average cost: $749, safety score: 51.33

1. Warsaw, Poland — total average cost: $712, safety score: 72.98

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

Lana Del Rey Reveals Her Favorite Song on Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department at 2024 Met Gala

The two musicians previously collaborated on "Snow on the Beach" from Swift's previous album, 'Midnights'

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

Lana Del Rey is enjoying her friend Taylor Swift 's latest album.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the Met Gala red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on May 6, the "Video Games" singer revealed her favorite song from Swift's The Tortured Poets Department.

"The one, 'Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?'" Del Rey, 38, told the outlet, "whatever that title was."

"It's beautiful," she added of the album, released April 19.

The tenth track on TTPD , "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is one of five written solely by Swift, 34, on the 31-song Anthology edition of the album. The song finds the Grammy winner addressing and poking fun at the public's perception of her as a famous figure.

At the 2024 Met Gala, Del Rey sported a custom look by Alexander McQueen’s Seán McGirr, honoring the " Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion " theme by referencing an archival Alexander McQueen look from its fall 2006 collection, per  Vogue .

Del Rey and the "Fortnight" singer previously collaborated on the track "Snow on the Beach" from Swift's previous album, Midnights , released in 2022. The pair attended the 2024 Grammy Awards together in February, and Swift highlighted her while accepting the golden gramophone for album of the year .

"I think so many female artists would not be where they are and would not have the inspiration they have if it weren't for the work that [Lana has] done. I think she's a legacy artist, a legend in her prime right now. I'm so lucky to know you and to be your friend," said Swift at the time.

In a recent interview with  Zane Lowe  on  Apple Music 1 , musician and producer Jack Antonoff spoke about the "magic" of working with both Swift and Del Rey.

Francis Specker/CBS via Getty Images

"Every time we do something new, I joke, 'I guess we still got it,' because there's no reason for it to keep coming the way it does," said the Bleachers frontman, 40, in March. "There's a lot of magic there. I feel that way with Taylor, I feel that way with Lana, I feel that with my band."

"There's people I've had these long relationships with, where I'm just like, the opposite of expecting it. It's almost like, the more we do, the less I expect it," added Antonoff. "Because I often think to myself, well, how much longer could we really keep having this spark? And I'm just grateful that it's there, and I don't know where it comes from or where it goes, but the one thing that I've noticed is that anyone who claims to know where it comes from and where it goes burns out pretty quick."

His grandfather's World War I service and his father's World War II experiences laid the foundation for Shep's destiny, but it was a pivotal visit to Pearl Harbor at a tender age that ignited his passion for service. Through riveting anecdotes, Shep takes us on a journey through his illustrious career, from serving in Vietnam to his impactful European tour with the legendary Babe Heffron from the original Band of Brothers. Along the way, he learned invaluable leadership lessons, none more profound than Babe's timeless wisdom: "Take care of your troops, and they'll take care of you." Tune in as Shep reflects on the essence of leadership, the power of mentorship, and the enduring legacy of service. This is an episode you won't want to miss!
