The Lakes of Madeira
This is a walk unlike any other. Many of our guests tell us it is the walk they have enjoyed the most. Deep in the valley of the western plateau, you will be marvelled at the rock pools, which have been carved over millions of years by the water as it runs towards the sea, forming magnificent waterfalls and cascades.
If you choose the summer to do this tour, be sure to bring your bathing suit and take a refreshing dip in the invigorating and crystal clear mountain waters. You will experience diversity in walking through various types of terrain from the flat terrain of the levadas to the challenging mountains, along unmarked paths as we make our way up to the oldest mountain in the western side of the island.

WELCOME TO MADEIRA ISLAND AND OUR BEAUTIFUL LEVADA WALKS
"Levada" is a Portuguese word derived from the word "levar" - which means to carry and is roughly translated as "carriageway", but more correctly defined as mini-canal. The mini-canals are irrigation systems developed to distribute water from the rainfall heavy and wet regions on the north of Madeira island to the drier sun parched regions of the south. The water is usually stored in reservoirs or tanks, or captured directly from natural fountains to be redirected and channeled across a wide network of winding canals. These narrow water carriageways deliver precious water along far distances to banana plantations, vineyards, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens, as well as to hydro-electric power stations dotted around the island. The levadas criss cross the mountains and cover a total distance of 2500 km, and date back to as far as the early 16th century.
The Levada "Walks" are walking trails along the maintenance paths beside the Levadas. Although the Levadas were constructed primarily for agricultural/industrial use they are just as important for tourists and local people alike who want to enjoy outdoor adventure activities inaccessible by cars.

If required a babyseat / boosterseat there’s a non-commissionable extra charge of 3€, per seat. Must be requested upon the reservation.
If the child in under 12 years old and does not have 135 centimeters in height, please let us know (in the comment section) as by Portuguese law it requires a babyseat / booster seat.
Please do note that children under the age of 4 years old are entirely at the parents responsibility and accountability.

Lido Promenade
The Lido coastal promenade in Funchal, is well known for the many tourist facilities it offers and the extensive leisure area much appreciated by locals as well as tourists. Lined with palm trees and bordered by splendid botanical gardens, this promenade links the Lido area with the pebbled Praia Formosa beach at the western end of Funchal, offering breathtaking views over the sea and towards Cabo Girão to all those who stroll, walk or run along there… or who just relax on one of the many benches!
Do you want to go for a swim in the sea or just sunbathe? All along this promenade there are several opportunities to enjoy these activities. There are two public swimming pool complexes – Lido , with a really large seawater pool, and Ponta Gorda – as well as the private swimming pool complex of Clube Naval, all of which offer extensive leisure facilities with seawater and separate children’s pools, sea access, sports activities, restaurants, snack bars, etc… But if you prefer, you can also go to Gorgulho Beach. As you can see, the Lido area has all you need for spending a relaxing day at the sea front!
You can now enjoy the new live webcams at Lido , Ponta Gorda , and Barreirinha in Funchal.
Along the Lido promenade you will also find some nice restaurants of different categories (some of them are a little bit hidden inside the public swimming pool areas) and with varied offers, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your dinner while admiring magnificent sunsets and breathtaking views over the ocean and the surrounding areas!
